It only takes a cursory glance around the malls in Indonesia’s major cities to realise that, rightly or wrongly, Christmas is already upon us. Those who enjoy and celebrate Christmas will be pleased that the festive season has started, while those who are less enthusiastic will be putting off their acknowledgment and involvement until the last possible minute. Whichever category you fall in to, there is no denying that the world’s largest Muslim nation has decided that the festivities must begin and Christmas trees and festive decorations adorn almost all of the retail and food and beverage outlets in the country’s major cities. While some parts of the world argue about the appropriateness of terms like “Merry Christmas”, Indonesia embraces the festive season and celebrates without prejudice, underlining the country’s motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, literally meaning “out of many, one”, but generally translated as “Unity in Diversity”. In the same way non-Muslims accept and respect Ramadhan in Indonesia, non-Christians accept and respect Christmas. This is one of the many things that make Indonesia such a wonderful place to live for people of all races and religions. Many countries could learn from Indonesia’s example of tolerance and acceptance. Within these pages you will find an eclectic mix of stories and information, including a look at some of Indonesia’s most controversial convictions and the latest advice on visas for investors wishing to stay in Indonesia. Happy reading!

Investors No Longer Require a Work Permit in Indonesia
As of November 1, 2018, the Ministry of Manpower and Immigration has started the implementation of the new work and stay permit application system for foreign workers based on Regulation of Minister of Manpower number 10 of 2018 (MOM Regulation) and Ministry of Law and Regulation number 16 of 2018. In line with the new application system, the foreign investment board, BKPM, has issued regulation 6 of 2018 (BKPM Regulation). In this article we will discuss the option of investors to obtain a limited stay permit (ITAS) without the need to apply for a work permit (RPTKA and notification – previously known as IMTA). An investor is a foreign person who owns shares in a local foreign limited liability company (PT PMA). There are two types of investors in Indonesia: 1) Investors who do not work as a Director or Commissioner (shareholder only), and 2) Investors who hold shares in a PT PMA and also work as Director or Commissioner in the same PT PMA. Pros and cons of Investor Stay Permit The main pros and cons of obtaining an investor ITAS are: 1. Pro: The investor is not required to obtain a RPTKA and notification, which will lead to shorter processing times. Moreover, the investor is not required to pay the mandatory contribution to the Indonesian Manpower Development Fund (DPKK) of US$1,200 per annum. 2. Con: The investor is not allowed to perform any work in Indonesia. In case an investor needs to work in Indonesia, he/she is required to obtain a work permit through the standard application procedure. 3. Con: Although not clearly regulated, based on our current understanding it is not possible to include dependents under an investor ITAS. Under a normal ITAS family members (spouses and children) can join the foreign worker in Indonesia using a dependent ITAS. Family members of an investor who wish to join the investor to Indonesia are therefore required to apply for a single-entry visa, with a maximum validity period of 60 days, and which can be extended up to four times, each extension for maximum one month.
Contradiction in MOM Regulation and BKPM Regulation Based on article 10 (1) of the MOM Regulation, any Investor who holds shares in a PT PMA and who at the same time also serves as Director or Commissioner is not required to obtain a work permit (RPTKA and notification) to work and stay in Indonesia. Article 48 (1) of the BKPM Regulation however only issues a recommendation for a limited stay visa for investors who do not work in Indonesia. At the time of writing, BKPM has not yet regulated a recommendation for investors who hold shares in a PT PMA and also work as director or commissioner. Moreover, based on article 22 (3a) of the Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation number 51 of 2016, a limited stay visa which is issued for investors does not allow the investor to perform any work activities. Until the authorities (BKPM and Ministry of Law and Human Rights) issue a new regulation in line with the MOM Regulation, we recommend that investors apply for a work permit (RPTKA and notification), to avoid any problems with manpower officers in case of audits. Types of stay permits Currently, there are two types of stay visas available for investors who hold shares in a PT PMA and who do not serve as director or commissioner at the same time: 1. Index Visa C313: This type of visa is required for investors who wish to opt for a 12-month stay permit. Amongst others, the visa requires a passport with a validity period of at least 18 months and a recommendation from BKPM. 2. Index Visa C314: This type of visa applies to investors who wish to obtain a 24-month stay permit. The document requirements are almost the same as those of the Index Visa C313, however the minimum passport validity period is set to 30 months.
Application Procedure Recommendation BKPM The application for the investor’s ITAS must be submitted offline to BKPM, by completing the required form. After successful submission of the application, BKPM will check the application and within three business days after the successful submission, BKPM will issue a recommendation. A rejection of BKPM will be issued within two business days as of the date of successful submission of the application. Limited Stay Visa When applying for the limited stay permit, the investor is not allowed to enter or stay in Indonesia using a single entry business visa or a multiple entry business visa, because this may lead to a rejection of the limited stay permit application. Once the limited stay visa is issued, the foreign worker can collect the limited stay visa in the Indonesian embassy abroad. Investor ITAS Under the new application system, all foreign workers and foreign investors are now required to obtain their ITAS at the immigration checkpoint at the airport, after they have landed in Indonesia. This new procedure does not apply for investors. They will still need to complete a biometric session and collect the investor ITAS at the local immigration office. Local Registrations After the investor arrives in Indonesia and has obtained his/her investor ITAS, there are two final local licences which need to be arranged, i.e. the police permit (STM) and the residence permit (SKTTS). For the application of these licences there is no attendance from the investor required and can thus be performed by the agent. Moreover, during the application for these licences, there are no travel restrictions for the investor. The investor is thus allowed to travel inside Indonesia, or to travel abroad during the application.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Have a Stress-Free Move with Allied Pickfords Indonesia Expat sat down with Mr. Jack Hanafi, Country Manager for Allied Pickfords Indonesia, to talk about the company and their expertise in worldwide relocation services.
When was Allied Pickfords established? Can you tell us about its history? Well for us it all began in 1966 actually with a pack of horses and a man named Tom Pickfords. That’s basically the very short history of it. And since then our organisation has become the world's most recognised market leader in international household goods removals. One aspect has remained unchanged and that is our commitment to provide top quality service to each and every one of our clients. When it comes to moving the treasured belongings of families on the move, we think that you will agree that no measure we take is too small or too insignificant. With over 1,200 offices in over 60 countries we ensure that you can move with total confidence Allied to Allied from Indonesia to anywhere in the world. Our head company SIRVA Worldwide Relocation Moving has gone on to become the world’s recognised market leader in international relocation and moving for the past five years as well.
All of these packing materials were especially designed by our experts to help ensure that every client’s belongings will arrive at the destination in one piece. We want to give customers peace of mind. What is your most popular service? I would say that our most well-known service is our door to door international move. We provide personalised meeting from the start with our moving consultants, of course packing experience with our highly-skilled teams, and constant updates and communication with our dedicated destination agents and the local team. Everyone in this company works towards one goal, which is to provide peace of mind to the customers. We want to be able to provide a stress-free experience. I believe that's why we won the award for Number One Customer Choice because we are able to meet or even exceed expectations. In which Indonesian cities do you operate? We have our main office in Jakarta and a branch in Surabaya. For other cities in the country we normally work with local tenders that we know well, except if it’s a VIP client. When it’s a VIP client who has a lot of valuable and fragile items we send our whole crew from Jakarta to anywhere within Indonesia.
What awards have you gained? As a local entity we've received the award for Number One Customer Choice in Asia-Pacific. That's an award that recognises the excellence in service where all of our clients across Asia-Pacific pick one company within the region that continuously excels and exceeds expectations. We’ve continuously received this award from 2013 to 2017. Globally as a whole general company, SIRVA has been named as the 2018 Asia-Pacific Relocation Management Company of the Year. And it was an award given by the EMMAs which is the Expatriate Management Mobility Awards.
What is the importance of hiring a moving company instead of moving on your own? Let me start .by saying when you’re moving, imagine having to book your own truck and do the physical packing of your own stuff. And lifting that stuff into trucks, and then driving that truck to your new house. But wait, don’t forget about the traffic in Jakarta. Let’s also not forget about the quality of the roads here and the narrow alleyways.
Which worthwhile causes does Allied Pickfords support? We have a lot of different charities and events that we make donations to but I think I want to highlight one particular assistance that we do. We help this particular organisation called Wisma Cheshire. Every year they hold a bazaar and all the revenue from that bazaar is actually distributed to aid the poor, disabled, homeless, orphans, and more. I think that’s the biggest cause that we contribute to. We assist them with trucking and we also give gift boxes to everyone as a souvenir. It's basically a complimentary service from us so that's a way to give back to the community and people in need as well. What types of moving services do you offer? We specialise particularly in the packing and international shipping of household goods. Now we cover door to door international moves, we cover local moves and we cover inter-island moves within Indonesia. Inter-island means that if you want to move from here to Sulawesi, for example, we can help you do that. That's the type of services we provide. Can you elaborate on the professional packing services? Basically when it comes to packing services we continuously improve and evolve our methods of packing within the company. We actually strive to provide a first class experience for our customers. Our carpenters who have been with us for over ten to 15 years have very expert knowledge with regards to customising special crates using six millimetre, eight millimetre and 12 millimetre plywood to cover some of our client’s most fragile items. This includes small ornaments, statues, artwork, or any memorabilia 8
Indonesia expat ISSUE 227
As for clothes, we also provide standard wardrobes made from spare wooden plywood to hang premium clothes such as dresses, shirts, and suits to keep them organised during the move. We protect it with a layer of laundry plastic to keep the clothes clean.
Then, once you arrive at your new destination or your new residence you still have to carefully unpack your things and place the furniture exactly where you want it. Not to mention how upset you will get when you unpack and you see some damage to your precious belongings. So my question to you is why put yourself through this unnecessary stress if you can hire a professional moving company. We can do all these things for you and all you have to do is sit back, relax and go about your day. It is our job to make your life stress free and to make your life easier.
that may be difficult to transport. What we do normally is we pack it all first and then we make a special crate for it. First, the plywood ensures that no matter what happens to the crate during shipping, the chances of any items being damaged is very minimal. That’s the first material we use and the second one we have is what we call a blacu cloth. This is a very soft cloth created to wrap around furniture as a dressing to protect from humidity or any outside particles. The third material we use is a foam sheet, one side is rough and the other has waxy material. This is used to protect oil paintings from sticking to packing material and helps the paint quality stay the same. More packing materials we use include what we call “corner protection”. This is a strong cardboard piece that helps protect fragile items like frames, glass tables and mirrors from chipping or smashing into pieces during the move.
Why should people choose Allied Pickfords? The fact that we’re the only moving company that solely focuses on packing and international shipping with household goods should tell you more than enough. We are ISO 9000:2015 certified for quality management system applicable to provision of moving services. That means our team worked tirelessly together on a daily basis to achieve optimal customer satisfaction. We have professional consultants, experienced packers and staff who are on the clock ready to provide personalised moving solutions and the best service to our customers. We are the leading expert in our industry. We provide the best quality service to our customers. As I have highlighted, the effort we made to design and use the different materials I think is what sets us apart from our competitors. But the most important thing is, moving from Indonesia to another country can be a stressful experience. If you read our logo, it says sit back, relax and let us carry the load. We are here to make your life easier. So that's why you should choose us.

SCAMS IN THE CITY
Kenneth Yeung is a Jakarta-based editor
Arrested Playwright Duped by Fool’s Gold A troubled dramatist has fallen victim to a scam involving idiotic claims about the secret gold of an Indonesian king. BY KENNETH YEUNG
Ruben said that as one of seven ancestors of the king, he received a share of the wealth, which he had intended to use for development programs in Papua. He said the World Bank had transferred Rp23.9 trillion to his Indonesian bank accounts in 2016, but the Finance Ministry and Bank Indonesia were blocking the money. To get the money released, he would need to pay a fee of Rp50 million. Sound familiar? It’s a classic Nigerian advance-fee scam. The sort of stupid crap that goes directly to email spam folders every day. Ratna fell for it hook, line and sinker, fooled by hundreds of pages of phony documents, including emails with atrocious spelling and grammar. She transferred Rp50 million to Ruben and then began accusing Jokowi and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati of “financial crimes” for blocking Ruben’s money. The World Bank and the Finance Ministry both denied the story. Their official denials did not explain the whole thing was just a scam. One group, the Friendship Forum of the Palaces of the Archipelago, which deals with matters of Indonesian royalty, pointed out it was a hoax as there was no known hidden treasure of ancient Indonesian kings.
W
hen I first encountered playwright and actress Ratna Sarumpaet in early 1998, she was a hero. She had written a play about Marsinah, a labour rights activist who in 1993 was raped, tortured, beaten and left to die after the military intervened in a strike at her workplace in East Java. Marsinah was one of the leaders of the strike, in which workers had demanded minimum wage. Her killers were never brought to justice, but Ratna made sure Marsinah was not forgotten.
performing the song, which was an unlicensed rip-off of Queen’s We Will Rock You.
In March 1998, Ratna was imprisoned for leading a discussion that questioned the wisdom of re-electing President Suharto at the height of the Asian financial crisis. In those days, people who dared to criticise the increasingly corrupt, repressive and nepotistic regime were at risk of being abducted, tortured and murdered. Ratna, feisty and fearless, was an inspiration to pro-democracy activists.
Ratna became a strident critic of Jakarta’s no-nonsense governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, after he took office in 2014. Some observers claimed this was because Ahok had cut the provision of “social funds” to mass organisations – an act that gained him powerful enemies. Ratna falsely accused Ahok of paying off the Corruption Eradication Commission, the police and the military.
After the fall of Suharto in May 1998, Ratna continued her activism through the theatre. She had a stint in Europe, and was feted for her dedication to human rights and women’s rights. In 2009, she attempted to run for the presidency but the Constitutional Court ruled independent candidates were ineligible.
In 2016, Ratna was briefly detained for allegedly plotting a coup against Jokowi. She had ditched her partisan stance and was a staunch Prabowo supporter. She subsequently joined his campaign team for the 2019 presidential election. In September 2018, Ratna posted a photo online of her bruised and swollen face, claiming she had been assaulted by three men at Bandung airport in West Java. Prabowo and other opposition figures quickly condemned the “cowardly attack”. But it was all a lie. Ratna later confessed she had not been attacked but had undergone liposuction. She was arrested in October for spreading fake news and is awaiting trial. Police found she paid
It came as a shock in 2014 when Ratna launched a racist attack on Time magazine’s Indonesia correspondent, Yeni Kwok. Yeni had written an article criticising musician Ahmad Dhani’s song supporting presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto. Dhani had worn a Nazi uniform when 10

Human rights activists questioned why Ratna was supporting Prabowo, Suharto’s former son-in-law, who had been dismissed from the military in August 1998 because troops under his command had abducted pro-democracy activists. In response to the criticism, Ratna insisted she was neutral and supported neither Prabowo nor his rival, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
It’s a cl assic N igerian advanc e-fee sc a m . Ratna fell for it hook , line and sin ker, foo hundre led by ds of p ages of docum phony ents, in c l u d em a i l s ing with at rocious spellin g and g r a m ma r.
for her vanity procedure with funds from a bank account that had received donations for victims of a ferry sinking disaster in North Sumatra.
INDONESIAN KING’S FORTUNE CON
Now, this is where the story really starts. Four days before undergoing cosmetic surgery, Ratna had on September 17, 2018, held a bizarre press conference at the national parliament in Jakarta. She claimed the government was blocking the release of Rp23.9 trillion (US$1.64 billion) in assistance for Papua province. Backing up her claim was a Papuan man, Ruben P.S. Marey. He had contacted the Ratna Sarumpaet Crisis Centre with a ludicrous tale about being the ancestor of an ancient Indonesian king, who left a massive fortune of 57,000 tons of gold, which ended up in a Swiss bank account controlled by the US Federal Reserve and the World Bank. The story goes that this mythical wealth was to be used for global humanitarian purposes in the 1960s, but US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 and founding Indonesian President Sukarno was ousted in 1965, so the gold remained under the control of Jewish bankers.
If Ratna had done some fact-checking, she might have learned that Ruben has a history of making outrageous claims about money. In November 2012, he claimed gunmen had stolen US$970,000 and Rp279 million from him in Jakarta. He also claimed to be an official of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs – something the ministry denied. Despite being exposed as a liar, Ruben found plenty of people to believe his fantasies. On September 26, 2018, he organised a protest of about 500 people at the National Monument Park, opposite the State Palace, demanding the government stop blocking his money. He said sums of US$812 million, £605 million and EUR 231 million had been sent to his accounts with Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), Bank Central Asia (BCA) and Bank Mandiri. He claimed the president and finance minister were in cahoots with a national banking mafia to prevent the people of Papua from enjoying his money. Following Ratna’s arrest in October, police began investigating her story about Ruben’s blocked funds and realised they were dealing with a scam. On November 7, they arrested Ruben and three of his accomplices. The gang of four had posed as officials of Interpol, the State Intelligence Agency, the State Palace, Bank Indonesia, and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre. One more member of the gang was still at large in late November. Police said that in addition to Ratna, the gang had also scammed an individual who gave them Rp940 million in the hope of receiving a share of the World Bank money. It’s sad when activists become blinded or deluded by greed. One can only hope that common sense prevails in the run-up to next year’s elections, and that people aren’t fooled by lies and scams.

Festival Opens Eyes to Art and Literature Experiences outside the classroom are an integral part of an all-round education, says Shawn Hutchinson, principal of international school ACG School Jakarta. He says the school, which offers an educational pathway from Kindergarten to Year 13, aims to provide students with all five key elements to a challenging, holistic education. They are academics; student well-being; sport activities and the arts; leadership and service; and experiential education outside of the classroom. The latter was put into practice when students in Years nine to 12 attended this year’s five-day Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in October. It is the third year running that ACG School Jakarta has attended the event, an annual pilgrimage for lovers of literature and conversation, which brings together some of the world’s most powerful artists, authors, thinkers and performers. Students were exposed to a raft of events, presentations and workshops, from Pecha Kucha – a presentation format in which artists present 20 images in 20 seconds that draws its name from the Japanese term for “chit chat”, to short films and exposés of creative writing. Highlights included a writing workshop by children's author Innosanto Nagara who treated students to the first public reading of his upcoming young adult novel; and a short film The Epic whose Dutch director had taken inspiration from Othello and Ramayana.

The most eagerly anticipated event was the Poetry Slam, which saw 24 international and local poets perform on stage in front of a packed and raucous audience.
Students Daniel Dickinson and Isabel ten Have in Year 11 performed their pieces To All the Bros I’ve Loved Before and My Mind was a Serene Ocean that they had worked on as part of the poetry component of their English Literature IGCSE. “From an educational perspective, this is a fantastic opportunity for our students who are interested in English and Literacy to gain more experience and understanding,” explained Mr Hutchinson. “But experiences like this outside the classroom, particularly those involving travel, also teach students about self-responsibility, initiative and the many opportunities that life can present. Not to mention the interactions they had with countless inspiring artists and writers.” He said the arts and activities like drama can also play a key role in students’ academic performance. "Traditional assumptions about the interrelationship between the arts and learning are now being supported by research showing there is indeed a link with student achievement and gains in maths, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking and verbal skills," he says. At the end of the day, however, it’s about more than results. “Our students are engaged, connected young people and for us as their educators, it’s about a lot more than the pursuit of academic excellence – we want to nurture autonomy, global awareness, mindfulness, and compassion for others.”

abuan Bajo, once a small fishing village, is the bustling capital of Komodo District and West Manggarai Regency in Easy Nusa Tenggara. Located on the western coast of Flores Island, it is filled with many natural wonders that anyone would surely enjoy. Take note that it is not recommended to visit in the rainy season because you would miss many outdoor activities.
Swim deeper and you might see the seaweed and water plants swaying gently from side to side in sync with the waves.
The village and traditional markets on the island are often crowded with locals, whereas the hills and beaches are more peaceful and suited for relaxation. Stroll along the beach with its sand glowing under the morning sunlight like thousands of little jewels. Refresh your eyes with the gentle pulsing of the dark blue sea, the clear waves lapping at the shore. The beautiful sunrise and sunset also make great photo opportunities.
You can also socialise with the friendly and welcoming locals there. End your day with a trip to the souvenir shops to purchase a thing or two to serve as mementos of the pleasant trip you had. Keep in mind though that you should know how much items cost in general because some customers have been taken advantage of.
If just looking at the scenery is not enough to please you, you can go hiking on the fresh green hills with the bright sun and the breathtaking view encouraging you to hike higher. Cool off after hiking with a dive into the sea and witness a new world underneath the calm waters. Take a snorkel and marvel at the unusual textures of the different colourful corals. Look at the schools of gorgeous fishes as they swim by.

Labuan Bajo is known to be one of Indonesia’s most beautiful islands. It is advised to be very well prepared in terms of budget and itinerary as certain facilities are not as good as in the city. If you would like to go island hopping, you can always rent a boat. Renting a motorbike to explore the island is faster than using a car. Labuan Bajo has an amazing culture. You can gradually learn it just by tasting the local food, communicating with the locals and sometimes even trying to speak their language. Sure, they might not have all the modern perks like those available in the city. However, this place stands out as unique because of the things that cannot always be found in the city. The original traditional food recipes which have been perfected over many generations, the interesting culture, and the antiquities available in the traditional markets cannot be found anywhere else, making Labuan Bajo a memorable adventure.
HONOUR, GLORY, LEGACY, INSPIRATION
It’s almost incredulous how one year can serve up three monumental occasions of such local, national and global significance. One word might best sum up the 2018 landmarks, for the UK, the Republic of Indonesia and the British Chamber community – PRIDE.
INSIDE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE 100TH COMMEMORATION OF 1918 ARMISTICE
Indonesia honoured its war heroes on Heroes Day (Hari Pahlawan) on November 10. Just 24 hours later, marked the 100th anniversary of Remembrance of the war heroes who lost their lives in the First World War and latterly commemoration of those who died for their countries in the Second World War.

BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE SINCE 1918
2018 celebrated the centenary of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) with a spectacular showcase in the sky of London. The Red Arrows and three of Britain’s new F-35 Lightning stealth fighters were among the 100 aircraft taking part in a flypast over Buckingham Palace, along with Puma and Chinook helicopters, a Lancaster bomber, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Tornados and 22 Typhoons helping to spell out “100”. The months planning for the display are showcasing the new Queen’s colours of RAF representing, “tenacity, skill and gallantry”. The current Chief of the Air Staff, Sir Stephen Hillier, believes the future of the RAF will almost certainly evolve around unmanned aircraft to some degree. In 100 years, the RAF has evolved but its core mission has remained the same – protecting the skies of Britain.

Wow!
What a great sporting year this has been for Indonesia. We British know that it isn’t possible to overstate the importance of putting on a great performance in a sporting event. The UK basked in glory in the months after the 2012 London Olympics. The whole country is in a shop window. It’s important to showcase the best of the nation, organizationally, as a host nation, the culture and with sporting excellence. And Indonesia managed it all with their hosting of the Asian games. There was a record haul of medals, no obvious organizational bloopers and the entire Games, including the Para games went off superbly. The nation has the right to be incredibly proud. Congratulations.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
This year Remembrance Sunday marks the 100 years anniversary of the signing of 1918 Armistice, ending the First World War. The traditional UK wide ceremony will be held in Whitehall, with Remembrance events at local cenotaphs across the country. The World War I (1914-1918), United Kingdom sent 6 million of its population (1 in 4 of male UK population) and lost 886,342 (military deaths) and 109,000 (civilian deaths). For the first time ever since the armistice signing Germany joined the remembrance Sunday at the UK, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier together with the Queen attended a special service at Westminster Abbey.

In Flanders Field In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. BOX OF 1920S POPPIES FOUND IN A SUITCASE IN CARDIFF The red silk poppies were first sold by the Royal British Legion in 1921, with the funds raised used to help veterans. The reason poppies are used to remember those who have given their lives in battle is because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after World War One ended.
It is thought that doctor John McCrae (30 November 1872 - 28 January 1918) began the draft for his famous poem “In Flanders Fields” on the evening of the 2 May, 1915 in the second week of fighting during the Second Battle of Ypres. It is believed that the death of his friend, Alexis Helmer, was the inspiration for McCrae's poem “In Flanders Fields”.

GIVING KIDS A SPORTING CHANCE
BritCham’s ‘Giving Kids A Sporting Chance’ (GKSC) began its second decade of community support this year. The GKSC portfolio is funded largely through the generosity of members who attend the sports gala and Christmas Party fundraising events. External event partners also support with raffle sponsorship. The projects within GKSC are focused on sports that are regularly associated with the UK – football, rugby, hockey and cricket. In the first decade, more than 4,500 children had benefitted from projects, meeting sports legends and most of all making new friends in a safe and healthy environment.

This has been weekly coaching. The school comprising, girls and lads, among 22 schools in a tournament in Madura last month. One of them finished as runner-up in their category – not bad considering they hadn’t held a hockey stick before January this year. The tournament was attended by former Malaysian national player and coach, Vikneswaren.

In August 2017, Outward Bound Indonesia initiated a project called “Ekspedisi Bhinneka Bagi Bangsa” (loosely translated as Diversity for the Nation Expedition). It is a scholarship program for underprivileged high school students from across the country to be developed as Ambassadors of Peace. The program’s mission is to spur self-discovery and instill the values of respect, understanding, tolerance, perseverance, teamwork and compassion for Indonesian youths. “This expedition has taught me the true meaning of friendship. I learned to understand and respect those who are different from me,” says an Alum. Using an Adventure-base learning methodology, in a weeklong nature expedition, participants must work together in the midst of adversity and diversity. As a team, participants hike a mountain where they will hold a flag-raising ceremony on the mountain-top, participants go on canoe expeditions across the lake, build a raft to reach the other side, and also set up their campsites every night where they cook, eat and rest together. Participants vary from ethnicities, religions, genders, even physical abilities. To date, there have been more than 100 students from Aceh to Papua, boys and girls, physically abled and disabled who have received this scholarship. BritCham has been a tremendous supporter by sponsoring underserved students from West Java region to participate in these expeditions. “We believe (the program) will benefit the kids in forming their leadership skills, character development, nationalism and diversity enthusiasm by applying nature-expedition learning methods”, says Brithcam. If you or your friends or Organization would like to reach out to sponsor more Youths to be able to participate in the program, please contact us : bhinnekabagibangsa@gmail. com or find us on Instagram at @outwardbound_id #ekspedisiBhinneka Outward Bound Indonesia is licensed by Outward Bound Global, and is the leading organization worldwide of experiential and outdoor education programs for youth and adults.

OBSERVATION
The Many Meanings of the Hijab BY INTAN TANJUNG
I
This may explain why back then there weren’t as many women wearing hijabs as there are now.
wore a hijab for the first time at my 17th birthday party. At that time, wearing a hijab was sort of a symbol of entering adulthood, so I also had to control my behaviour. Although I wasn’t 100 percent sure about wearing a hijab, I knew I didn’t have to be too strict and I could just wear it whenever I felt like it, so there was no pressure at all.
While the practice of wearing a hijab is often linked to politics and hegemony, the media rarely tell the story on the individual level. What does wearing a hijab mean to one person, and how does that practice relate to their social context?
Back then, wearing a hijab was considered a big step. It was a careful decision to take and no one gave anybody any pressure to do it. The responsibility was big. It was more than just putting a piece of cloth on one’s head or being fearful of God. When wearing a hijab, women had to control their behaviour and restrict themselves from doing things that were considered to be sins. It was a transformation of self, not only in their look, but also in the heart, soul and mind. And for me, the hijab marked a shift of stages in life, from being a teenager to being an adult. Unfortunately the hijab version of me was short lived, as I grew up to be more of a modernist than a conservative. In most western countries, wearing a hijab is commonly perceived as a symbol of submissiveness to religion or even patriarchy. Some countries in Europe even ban public use of full-covered veils called burqa as well as the eyes-uncovered veil niqab for security reasons. Hijabs are still allowed, but not in official spaces like schools and government offices. Unfortunately, most mainstream media I read usually juxtapose the narrative of wearing hijabs with western secular values or even state opinions that Muslims fail to integrate and embrace the western values. Only few media highlight the inequality and discrimination that Muslims are facing as a minority in western countries, and how the hijab is used as a symbol of resistance to secular values. As a response to the assumption, many Muslim women living in western countries prove that their willingness to wear a hijab has nothing to do with submissiveness.

AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT IS CONSIDERED A FASHIONABLE INDONESIAN WOMAN NOWADAYS.
“It was more than just putting a piece of cloth on one’s head or being fearful of God.” Their decision to wear a hijab is fully based on their own consideration and consciousness, and not under anyone’s pressure. I have stumbled upon some YouTube videos to compare the decisions of women wearing hijabs to my European Muslim friends. Most of them express similar reasons, that by wearing a hijab, they want to be identified as a person who practices Islam. Hijab in this case serves as a symbol of group belonging. What about in Indonesia? Historically, the practice of wearing a hijab itself went under restriction during the New Order Regime as an attempt to control Islamic movements that were against the government’s modernist view.
I remember seeing my mum’s photos taken around the end of the 1970s wearing sleeveless clothes. She said that her look was considered trendy and acceptable back then, and no one seemed to be bothered by it, even though her father was known as a respected Ulema in her hometown. She did not wear a hijab until she returned from the hajj in the 1990s. My mum’s decision to wear a hijab was closely linked to her pilgrimage. For Muslims, the hajj is the ultimate ritual to be taken only when the person can withstand it financially, physically and mentally. Most Muslims see the hajj as an invitation from God, the ultimate goal of being a Muslim. The Pilgrimage is a rite of passage. A theory from a classic anthropologist, Arnold van Gennep, explains rite of passage as a liminal stage, which should be taken in order to gain a new status in society. In this liminal stage, a person should practice rituals and gain access to a set of values, which grants him or her a new identity. With this “new status”, this person will be able to take a greater role in society and earn respect from others in their newly acquired identity. The hijab, in this case, is the symbol of this new status. There shouldn't be a universal meaning of hijab, so the context of hijab varies from
one country to another. It is personal, and it depends completely on the social contexts. For example, many of my Indonesian friends decided to wear a hijab after passing certain stages of their lives which they consider important. For example, after graduating from college, after entering a marriage, after getting a dream job or even after finishing certain religious rituals like hajj or mini hajj (umrah). In this case, a hijab can be seen as a symbol of a new identity, to indicate which part of society that person belongs to, and to distinguish them from others who do not belong to that group. Hijabs can also be seen as a form of protection. Most women think that they can avoid attracting inappropriate attention from men by wearing a hijab. Wearing a hijab can make them feel safer and can prevent them from harassment, as they’re perceived to be “good women”. Unfortunately these days, others who do not wear hijabs must often suffer a negative stigma. A research conducted in 2017 by an Indonesian scholar, Linda Sari Zuarnum, a graduate from the Centre of Religious and Cross-Cultural Studies, Gajah Mada University, reveals that contemporary Muslim women who choose not wear a hijab nowadays experience the challenge of being stereotyped as non-pious Muslims who do not practice the religion. Those who decide to take it off mostly experience harsh social judgment from family members and social circles. The hijab has become a hot trend spreading quickly all across the country, thanks to celebrities and Instagram. Muslim women wearing hijabs are now perceived as pious, fashionable and trendy, and this has set the new standard for identity and morality in society. Does it mean that the trend of wearing a hijab will take away a woman’s personal freedom to express herself? And what will happen to them if they decide to go against the decision of the majority?

TOP 10
Top 10 Controversial Convictions in Indonesia BY KENNETH YEUNG
PRITA MULYA SARI
WISNU AGUNG / BERITAGAR.ID
BAIQ NURIL MAKNUN Sexual harassment victim jailed for six months In August 2012, Baiq Nuril Maknun (born 1978) was working as a temporary employee at State Senior High School 7 in Mataram, Lombok Island. Her job was to assist the school’s treasurer, Landriati. The school’s principal at that time was a man named Muslim. According to court records, Muslim often requested Baiq and Landriati accompany him to a private room at Puri Saron Hotel in the Senggigi beach resort area for “overtime”. On one occasion, Baiq arrived at the hotel room with her young child. Muslim ordered her to take her child to the hotel’s pool for a while. When she returned after about 90 minutes, Muslim allegedly showed her his sperm on the bed sheet. That afternoon, he made a vulgar telephone call to Baiq. She recorded the call, as she wanted to disprove rumours she was intimately acquainted with the principal. In August 2015, Baiq met with her colleague, Imam Mudawin, at a local government office. He copied the audio file from Baiq’s phone to his laptop with the intent of reporting the matter to Mataram City Legislative Assembly. The recording was shared among teachers and some students. Muslim lost his job and reported Baiq to police, accusing her of spreading information that “violated decency”. She was arrested on March 24, 2017. She went on trial at Mataram District Court and was acquitted on July 26, 2017. Muslim appealed. The Supreme Court on September 26, 2018, convicted Baiq of violating the Electronic Information and Transactions Law and sentenced her to six months’ jail. The three judges who convicted her are Maruap Dohmatiga Pasaribu, Eddy Army and Sri Murwahyuni.

Prita Mulya Sari (born 1977), a bank worker and mother of two, was a patient at Omni International Hospital in Tangerang, west of Jakarta, from August 8 to 12, 2008. She was suffering from mumps, Hospital malpractice victim jailed for six months but a doctor misdiagnosed her illness as dengue fever and gave her the wrong treatment. After recovering at another hospital, Prita sent a letter of complaint to Omni International. She was unsatisfied with the response. On August 15, she wrote a private email to her friends, warning them about the doctor who misdiagnosed her and complaining the hospital’s customer service division had “no manners or ethics”. Her email was reposted on social media. Omni filed civil and criminal defamation charges against Prita in September 2008. She went on trial later that month at Tangerang District Court. On May 11, 2009, she lost the civil case and was ordered to pay damages of Rp312 million to the hospital. She appealed at Banten District Court, which reduced the amount to Rp204 million. She appealed to the Supreme Court, which overturned the verdict. But she was arrested and jailed on May 13, 2009, pending her criminal libel trial. Later placed under house arrest, she was acquitted in December 2009, but the Supreme Court in June 2011 sentenced her to six months in jail. In June 2012, the Supreme Court reversed its earlier verdict, absolving Prita of any wrongdoing. Omni Hospital has since dropped the “International” from its name. The three judges who convicted Prita are Zaharuddin Utama, Salman Luthan and Imam Harjadi Slamet.
SRI MULYATI
she was arrested by police and accused of economic or sexual exploitation of a child. Police refused to arrest the club’s owner or manager for hiring the underage worker.
Semarang District Court on January 24, 2012, sentenced Sri to one year in jail and fined her Rp2 million, which would result in another two months imprisonment if she failed to pay. Semarang High Court upheld the verdict. In January 2014, the Supreme Court overturned the lower courts’ verdicts. She was awarded compensation of Rp5 million from the state for 13 months’ wrongful imprisonment, but the mechanism for receiving the compensation proved to be a bureaucratic nightmare. Three years later, she was yet to receive the money.
On September 18, 2014, a fight broke out between two public minivan drivers over a passenger in East Jakarta. One of the drivers, M. Ronal, went home and returned with a sharp weapon. This prompted other minivan and ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers to kill him. Police were informed one of the killers was a minivan driver named Dodi. Unable to find him, police instead apprehended a 32-year-old ojek driver named Dedi, who had been at his house in Tebet, South Jakarta, with his wife at the
time of the killing. Dedi was arrested by three plainclothes police on September 25, 2014. He was tortured into making a confession. In December 2014, he went on trial at East Jakarta District Court, accused of manslaughter. In April 2015, he was sentenced to two years in jail. Dedi appealed and was exonerated by Jakarta High Court on July 27, 2015. While in detention, he was unable to support his family, resulting in his three-year-old son dying of malnutrition.

Ahmadiyah’s national security chief, Deden Sudjana, was seriously wounded in the attack and his car was torched. He was prosecuted for inciting violence because he had struck the murderous mob’s leader, Idris bin Madanim. In August 2011, Deden was given six months in jail. The judge who convicted him is Sumartono.

OMPUNG LINDA 92-year-old woman jailed for felled durian tree
Saulina Boru Sitorus, better known as Ompung Linda, was born in North Sumatra’s Toba Samosir region in 1926. In December 2016, she decided to renovate and expand a monument to her late husband and ancestors at a cemetery used by Batak people in Toba Samosir district. The owner of the land, Kardi Sitorus, granted permission for the work. When Linda and her relatives mentioned a durian tree was in the way, Kardi said they could cut it down. After it was felled, a local man named Japaya Sitorus (70), who is also a relative
of Linda, declared the ten-year-old tree was his property. He demanded hundreds of millions of rupiah in compensation. On March 1, 2017, he reported Linda, her son and her five nephews to police, accusing them of destroying his property. On September 19, 2017, the son and nephews were arrested and jailed. They and Linda went on trial at Balige District Court on December 20, 2017. Linda had to be carried to the courthouse by her grandson, after taking a boat ride of more than two hours across Lake Toba. On January 23, 2018,
the son and nephews were each sentenced to four months and ten days in jail. On January 29, Linda was sentenced to one month and 14 days in jail, to be served under city arrest status. The judge who convicted her is Marshal Tarigan. The state prosecutor who demanded a 92-year-old woman be jailed over a family dispute is Erthy Simbolon. There have been similar cases of elderly, illiterate women jailed for minor offenses.
KEMAT, DEVID, SUGIK Trio wrongfully tried for murder
JIS CLEANERS AND TEACHERS Seven jailed for alleged child rape In March 2014, the Indonesian mother of a six-year-old boy at Jakarta International School (JIS, later renamed Jakarta Intercultural School) claimed janitors had gangraped her son in a toilet at the exclusive school. Two other mothers later claimed their young sons might have also been sodomised by janitorial staff. Police arrested six cleaners. Four of them later said they were tortured into making false confessions. One who refused to confess, Azwar, died after undergoing seven hours of interrogation. He was buried without an autopsy. The mother behind the accusations tried to sue JIS for US$12.5 million. JIS had no liability for the cleaners, so the mother changed her story, claiming two teachers, Canadian Neil Bantleman and Indonesian Ferdinant Tjiong, had also abused her son. She demanded US$125 million in compensation. No evidence of abuse was ever produced. Instead, it was claimed Bantleman had produced a magic stone out of thin air to gain power over the boy – and abused him in a glass-walled office, witnessed by no one. In December 2014, the surviving cleaners were sentenced to between seven and eight years in jail. In April 2015, Bantleman and Tjiong each received ten years in jail. In August 2015, Jakarta High Court acquitted them due to the lack of evidence. In February 2016, the Supreme Court overturned the acquittals and extended their sentences to 11 years. As of December 2018, the mother is still trying to sue JIS at South Jakarta District Court.
In 2008, a decomposing corpse was found in a sugarcane field near Jombang in East Java. Police could not identify the body, but one man assumed it was his missing brother, Asrori. Police then arrested three men – Devid Eko Priyanto, Imam ‘Kemat’ Chambali and Maman ‘Sugik’ Sugianto – and tortured them into confessing to the murder of Asrori. Despite the absence of any forensic investigation, Jombang District Court on May 8, 2008, sentenced Kemat to 17 years in jail and Devid to 12 years. Sugik was still on trial when police arrested a serial killer, Very Idham Heryansyah, better known as Ryan. He confessed that Asrori was his 11th victim and was buried in his parent’s backyard. The corpse in the sugarcane field turned out to be
that of Fauzin Suyanto. DNA tests proved the trio were not the killers. The Supreme Court in December 2008 acquitted Kemat and Devid, while Sugik’s trial was terminated.
SCHOOLGIRL Rape victim jailed for abortion On May 30, 2018, a seven-month-old foetus was found at an oil palm plantation near Pulau village in Jambi province. Police identified the mother as a 15-year-old girl, who had been raped eight times by her 18-year-old brother since September 2017. He had threatened to beat her if she refused sex. Police arrested the two, as abortion is illegal in Indonesia – except in cases of medical emergency, and in rape cases if the pregnancy is in its first 40 days. The siblings went on trial together on July 9 at Muara Bulian District Court, defended by the same lawyer. On July 19, the girl was sentenced to six months in jail for an illegal abortion, while her brother was given two years for sexual abuse of a minor. The presiding judge was Rais Torodji. The siblings were sent to the same prison. After complaints by human rights groups, the girl’s sentence was overturned by Jambi High Court in August.
MEILIANA Jailed for complaint about a noisy mosque Meiliana (44), an ethnic Chinese woman and Buddhist from Tanjung Balai in North Sumatra, on July 22, 2016, complained to her neighbour, Kasini, that the call-to-prayer from loudspeakers at a nearby mosque was too noisy. On July 29, 2016, a group of men from the mosque visited Meiliana’s house and she confirmed she thought the volume was too loud. Provocative false messages then spread on social media, claiming Meiliana had thrown rocks at
the mosque to stop prayers. That night, a mob attacked Meiliana’s house and then burned and vandalised 14 local Buddhist temples. Police arrested 19 rioters, who later received jail terms of one to four months. A local policeman, Brigadier Kuntoro, reported Meiliana for blasphemy. She was arrested on May 30, 2018. Medan District Court on August 21 sentenced her to 18 months in jail. The presiding judge was Wahyu Prasetyo Wibowo. Medan High Court in October rejected Meiliana’s appeal. Vice President Jusuf Kalla has in the past complained that some Indonesian mosques are too noisy, but police and judges have not tried to jail him for blasphemy.

shown a new way to do something. She is honest, trustworthy, I have often left her alone without locking any doors or drawers! In the 5 years she has worked for us she has only asked to borrow money, which she promptly paid back! Considering she was widowed 2 yrs ago, even more amazing! She lives in the Kemang area, so that would be her preference. We speak Bahasa, but she doesn’t speak English, although she does understand some. Please contact her directly, +6281212171450 or email Janis at ibu.pendeta@hotmail.com Ibu Ani is our energetic live-out nanny who is very experienced with Expat families and is a jackof-all trades in the house. She currently cares for our two children, ages 4 and 7-months old during weekdays and often babysits on weekends. Additionally, she does dishes, laundry, sowing, and tidying up around the house. Best of all, Ibu Ani is incredibly creative with the children and invents fun out of nothing, perhaps turning a cardboard box into a dollhouse for coloring or folding paper into little origami animals for playing games. She seems to never take a break and is always engaged. She also speaks fairly good English and never seems to get ill. Yes, she's pretty amazing! You can contact Ibu Ani directly on WhatsApp at +628 38 9 0136 823 or you can contact me for questions at juliana. bah7@gmail.com

What Vaccines Should Have Your EXTRA Attention in Indonesia? Most people who come to work and live in Indonesia are advised to have a set of vaccinations on top of the childhood immunisations. The majority of the vaccines will protect you for years to come, but some of the vaccines need further actions!
Typhoid fever: This bacterial infection is caused by the Salmonella typhi bacteria (food poisoning). Typhoid fever is highly contagious. The vaccine however is only valid for three years. Make sure your vaccine is still valid!
Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B: Make sure you had the full set of vaccinations! For hepatitis A you are supposed to have 2 or 3 vaccinations within a year’s time or within 18 months. This depends on the manufacturer of the vaccine. In case you are not sure, administering an extra vaccine against hepatitis A will not be harmful. For hepatitis B it is also important that you complete the full series which is usually a series of three. If for some reason this is incomplete or if you are not sure, it is a good idea to test if you are protected. This can be done by a blood test. This enables a wise decision on additional vaccination.
against rabies beforehand. This is especially important because if you are not vaccinated you need immunoglobulins which are almost impossible to purchase in Indonesia. The rabies vaccination costs about Rp250,000 (you need a series of three) versus thousands of dollars for the immunoglobulins. Try to avoid the need for the expensive immunoglobulins at all costs, especially because it can be very hard to source them.
Japanese Encephalitis If you travel in the region, or eastern parts of Indonesia including Bali, it is advised to protect yourself against Japanese encephalitis. The virus is spread by mosquito bites (Culex mosquito) and may affect the brain. Headache and confusion are symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis.
Flu vaccination: Rabies: If you are at risk of being exposed to possible bites or scratches from mammals (also think monkeys) you should protect yourself
For all over six months old in a risk group. If you have chronic, respiratory, heart, kidney or liver disease. If you suffer from diabetes, immunosuppression or neurological disease you should also protect

yourself. If you are pregnant or over 60 years old you also qualify. The FLU vaccine protects against four viruses responsible for almost 85 percent of all seasonal flu. If you catch another flu virus, symptoms will be milder and the days of being ill will be less. It has proven to reduce the number of sick days. This list is not complete. For any tailored advice regarding vaccination it is advised to speak to your doctor. At Good Practice Clinic we are happy to discuss your needs. We have an all English speaking team.
