I have always been interested in the argument that happy people are healthier. I’ve read the research that shows if you are happy, you’ll look after yourself better, you’re more likely to exercise and eat a better diet than people who are unhappy. Productivity seems to be another off shoot of being happy, scientists reckon happy people are more likely to accomplish their goals. What has happiness got to do with anything? Well, people who fast for Ramadhan tend to adopt healthier habits, and become more aware of their health and how they take care of their bodies, and indeed their minds. Does fasting make people happier and healthier? There’ll be plenty of people in Indonesia who will be spending the month finding out. Working with our Health and Beauty theme, inside this issue we bring you the article “Fasting: From Health to Happiness.” We also have some interesting pieces for those of you who want to know more about healthy food, specifically related to eggs and beans, you might choose to eat them together but we’ve got articles about both - “Ethical Egg” and “Fool’s Fodder”. You’ll also find the list of recommended spas in Bali to aid you in your quest to stay healthy and beautiful. If you are looking for more sporting options “Self-Defence Classes & Muay Thai: A Commentary” is a worth a read. We hope you enjoy the areas we touch upon in this issue and you can look forward to more of the same, watch this space. Whatever your needs, Indonesia Expat is here to inform, and remember, we are open to suggestions!

Self-Defence Classes & Muay Thai: A Commentary BY KATE PARADIS

4) What else? Oh right, never walk home alone in the dark. In Indonesia though, that’s actually practical advice, there are way too many large holes and not enough street lighting; breaking an ankle is a real possibility! But I digress.

Courtesy of World Muaythai Council (www.wmcmuaythai.org)

S

elf defence classes are growing in popularity, especially among women, along with Muay Thai and boxing training. These badass sports are a stellar workout. Training usually consists of cardio-intensive, varietal rotating sets as a warm-up; these are similar to HIIT: High Intensity Interval Training, which is a known calorie crusher. Then once the gloves are on, mental focus is challenged with each hit, kick, block and dip! It’s a full mind and body workout that shreds fat, tones muscles – especially in the midsection, back and shoulders – improves confidence, strength, discipline, and releases so many endorphins that, by the end, it has participants crawling back for more. And I do mean crawling, because after the first session walking may not be an option! I’m early on in my training but saw positive results after only a few weeks. Don’t want to get hit? That’s ok, you don’t have to spar, and it is very common to simply train for fitness in a group or with personal trainer. Muay Thai started in Thailand hundreds of years ago as a self-defence technique to be used on the battlefield. It became Thailand’s national sport and is still an effective and well-respected form of self-defence. So, what about self-defence classes for women? It has evolved into a trendy pop-up workout, classes being offered at local gyms, workshops being included as team building for corporate events, etc. But how effective is it in saving our lives? And wait… Saving our lives from what? From who? Who exactly are we supposed to be defending ourselves against? Personally, I am on the fence about casual self-defence classes, and here’s why. I suppose the idea of women specifically

8

Indonesia expat ISSUE 237

being sold on self-defence classes rubs me the wrong way because we have been taught for so long that we need to defend ourselves, when it is in fact, exhausting, and not actually very effective against predators. Being told to be so careful all the time, using ultimately useless preventative “tactics” is, well, irritating. Further, the very fact that we have to defend ourselves against the many men that have apparently not yet fully evolved from animals is sad, for too many reasons to list here. Some examples of what we have been fed from a young age: 1) Walk from work/school to our car with our keys between our fingers. Hmmm, so our punch packs a more devastating blow to the face, I guess? 2) Never leave a drink unattended, and actually place our hand over our drinks all night long at the bar, in the event that some opportunist decides to dose us with Rohypnol and take advantage of our passedout body at the end of the night. 3) Dress modestly: I find this one is particularly frustrating, because it makes no difference, women in full niqab, still get assaulted.

“Ladies and men, let’s do Muay Thai because it’s badass, shreds fat, and makes us tougher physically and mentally. The benefits go far beyond self-defence preparation. It adds variety to our workout and makes us feel great! Plus, if we do train hard it can give us a leg up in the street some day when we need it, fingers crossed.”

The point is, we are filled with all of this rubbish from a young age, but predators still see us as their victims. All of these “best practices” actually contribute to society’s obsession with victim-blaming. In terms of physical self-defence to actually protect against aggressors, well, ask anyone who has completed military training, police, fire-fighting, any type of first-responder. It takes substantial training before your reactions become automatic. Nonetheless, understanding how to properly punch somebody, or hit them where it hurts, may indeed come in handy someday. Just don’t expect Chuck Norris or Jackie Chan reflexes after your work-sponsored self defence weekend workshop, or your Wednesday drop-in fitness class. For fitness and some basic education on technique, though, yes, very useful, silakan! Societal commentary aside, Muay Thai and other combat sports are simply awesome from a fitness standpoint. Ladies and men, let’s do Muay Thai because it’s badass, shreds fat, and makes us tougher physically and mentally. The benefits go far beyond self-defence preparation. It adds variety to our workout and makes us feel great! Plus, if we do train hard it can give us a leg up in the street some day when we need it, fingers crossed. Bottom line: be fit, stay safe, and be kind to each other.

RAMADHAN

Fasting: From Health to Happiness BY DONNY SYOFYAN

R

amadhan, the holy fasting month for Muslims, is back to greet Muslims around the globe. For Indonesian Muslims, this Ramadhan paves the way to take a moment to breath a sign of relief after the country’s laborious presidential and legislative elections. Not only is it a good time for reflection, this time of Ramadhan is instrumental in restoring our biological strength in the wake of an 11-month routine of life. Having read assorted sources, despite its religious necessity, we can also understand the health benefits of fasting - physical, mental and social. First, fasting can reduce the risk of disease. According to Mehmet Cengiz Öz, known professionally as Dr. Oz, fasting is a healthy lifestyle. It detoxifies the body and constitutes a much more natural cycle rather than sticking to a certain diet. The detoxification process can occur because of the use of fat as the main source of energy during fasting. The poisons stored in fat will be released from the body when used as fuel. In addition, a study conducted in Utah in 2008 showed that those who fast regularly have a lower risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease because the use of fat as the body's main energy source can reduce cholesterol. Decreasing cholesterol can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 58 percent. Second, fasting serves to aid weight loss. When fasting, the body does not receive any intake of food for more than 12 hours.

10

Indonesia expat ISSUE 237

“A study conducted in Utah in 2008 showed that those who fast regularly have a lower risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease because the use of fat as the body's main energy source can reduce cholesterol.”

The actual fasting phase starts when our digestive system is finished digesting all the nutrients contained in the digestive system. This process occurs about eight hours after the last meal has been eaten. After the food has been digested, the body will begin to use the energy reserves contained in our organs. Under normal circumstances, the glucose reserves stored in the liver and muscles, in the form of glycogen, are our main energy sources. When fasting, glucose reserves will be used first as an energy source. After the glucose reserves in the liver and muscle are used up, then fat will be the source of energy for the body. With the use of fat as an energy source, the fat content in the body can decrease. A reduced fat percentage can help reduce your weight. Third, fasting helps eliminate addiction. Fasting provides a motivation for our body to take a break from any poor eating habits you may have developed. This can help us reduce addiction to certain types of food such as sugar or coffee. For example, if you are accustomed to drinking coffee during the day, when you are fasting you are compelled not to drink coffee at all, so that

when the fasting period is over you will be less likely to rely on it. Likewise, with those who like to eat sweet snacks during the day, fasting can put these habits to an end. Therefore, the benefits of fasting for physical health usually come from the lack of consumption of caffeine and sugar contained in tempting, sugary foods. Fourth, fasting may make us happier. You can fast because of religious obligations. Yet the social traditions that are associated with fasting can benefit you, creating a habit for you to gather and take sahur (pre-dawn meals) or break your fast together with family and relatives. As quoted in NBC News, according to psychologist Susan Jones, anybody involved in activities and traditions during the fasting period can help families and relatives come closer to each other. This can help those who suffer from mental health conditions such as depression. In addition, after fasting for several days, the benefits of fasting on mental health will also be more pronounced because the body

will produce higher levels of endorphins than usual. This can help improve concentration or focus and make you feel better and happier mentally. Fifth, fasting during Ramadhan makes us more humane and connected, resulting in healthy, social relations. Like it or not, we are becoming a more disconnected society. Everything that we want is available online. Answers to any pressing questions can be found by opening our smartphone. If we want to make real connections and cause real effects in the world, we must be connected. Typical worshipful practices during Ramadhan could help Muslims who observe fasting get socially connected. Organising ifthar (the evening meal for breaking the fast) with orphans in orphanages or poor people, for instance, is a small but powerful step to create an opportunity for human, and humane connection. Fasting for Ramadhan connects and affects people. It is endowed with the power to make us care, which can be the seed of change and impetus for action. Fasting Muslims are obligated to meet and pay attention to the less fortunate in society. With that comes a heightened sense of awareness. On top of that, they will gain a much richer experience, treating those who have little or nothing as a part of their family. Happy fasting and have a blessed Ramadhan!

FOOD FACTS

Ethical Eggs? Some facts consumers should know about their poultry products BY KATE PARADIS

W

e have many options for eggs in the supermarket, but we should exercise caution in trusting the labels, as there are few regulations surrounding food labelling in Indonesia. As in many other countries, words like "organic," "natural," and "healthy" are marketing tactics that do not necessarily ring true. Further to impacting (or not impacting) our health as desired, there is also an animal welfare issue, as many farms in Indonesia are still utilising conventional battery-cage farm methods, which are widely regarded as cruel, and have been banned in many countries across the globe. Other farming methods, such as cage-free, or free-range provide the animal a more comfortable environment, room to spread their wings, feed, peck, and lay eggs as they would in a natural habitat. Reducing stress on the animal reduces the risk of premature deaths and infection and thus reduces the need for antibiotics. In battery-cage systems, antibiotics are often used regularly, as a preventive measure, which can cause medicine-resistant superbugs in both the animals and the humans consuming the products. Additionally, the conditions in battery-cage systems are grotesque. Multiple hens are packed into the cages, with no room to move. Cages are stacked on top of each other and are typically not cleaned. It is unsanitary and the risk of salmonella poisoning from the eggs that are produced is higher. The Farm Animal Care Alliance (FACA) is a coalition supported by Sinergia Animal, which is an NGO operating across Latin America and Southeast Asia and is devoted to improving animal welfare in farming practices for food production, and Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN). This group has recently combined forces in Jakarta to improve the welfare of egg-laying hens and has researched the issues extensively. In their investigations of farming practices in Indonesia, they have concluded that almost all farms in Indonesia use battery-cage methods.

Consumers have the power to make positive change by influencing the market where regulations for farming, food production, and food labelling may fail. We can choose eggs that are farmed with better animal welfare and food safety standards. So far, only one farm has been recognised as using higher animal welfare standards and good sanitary practices. Healthy Eggs farm in Sukabumi, just south of Jakarta, is devoted to farming healthy eggs and has adopted a cage-free system. When FACA visited the facility, they were impressed with the cleanliness, reduced use of antibiotics, no harsh chemical treatments, and generally pleasant environment for the laying hens. If you wish to purchase these eggs, you can find them in the brown boxes in the following stores in Jakarta and various places in Bandung. Healthy Eggs stockists: • Ranch Market • Duta Buah • Farmer’s Market • Rezeki • Kem Chicks • Koki Fruit • Gelael • Market City • Lokka • Grand Lucky • Total Buah • Maxim

“In battery-cage systems, antibiotics are often used regularly, as a preventive measure, which can cause medicine-resistant superbugs in both the animals and the humans consuming the products.”

IT’S A START

FACA’s work will continue across Indonesia in investigating farms, offering best-practices and technical expertise to farmers who wish to switch to cage-free, lobbying corporations that purchase large quantities of eggs, and embarking on hunts to find more farms that may already be producing ethical eggs. Some large corporations offering egg products have their own policies mandating the use of egg suppliers that use cage-free systems in European and North American countries, yet their Indonesian business units have not followed suit. It is the hope of FACA that these companies will make a pledge to move towards the use of suppliers that farm more ethically. If you wish to get involved, or would like more information, check their website at www.farmanimalcarealliance.com. In the meantime, heed the warning for misleading advertising on egg products, and opt for brands you know are producing healthier, more ethical eggs.

INDONESIA VISA OVERSTAY FINE RISES SHARPLY Make sure to get your visa documentation in order as soon as possible because Indonesia has significantly raised the daily penalty for overstaying your visa for the country. BY KERLI PÄRNAPUU

New regulations for overstaying visas in Indonesia Previously, foreigners could be held in detention or refused permission to leave Indonesia until a fine of Rp 300,000, around US$21, per day was paid. However, starting from 3rd May 2019, visitors who overstay their visa in Indonesia will face a daily fine of Rp 1,000,000, or roughly US$70, as per the Government Regulation No. 28 Year 2019. You’d be best advised not use visa overstaying as a way to extend your stay in Indonesia. Besides a fine and the fact that you will be stuck in immigration potentially for hours, it can also affect your ability to get visas in the future. If you want to stay longer or visit the country frequently, apply for a business visa1 instead.

Overstaying a visa in Indonesia for more than 60 days Staying in Indonesia longer than your visa or entry permit allows is considered an overstay in Indonesia. There is an opportunity to pay a fine; however, the purpose of the regulation is not to provide an endless extension of your stay. The difference between the legal consequences to someone who is overstaying less than 60 days and the one overstaying more than 60 days is simple. If you overstay less than 60 days you will receive a daily fine. However, if you have overstayed more than sixty days, you may face deportation, and even blacklisting.

Overstaying less than 60 days Daily fine of Rp 1,000,000 / US$70

Once you have overstayed more than 60 days, you will be questioned thoroughly by immigration officials. You will also no longer be welcome to re-enter the country for a certain time. Keep in mind that getting off the Indonesian blacklist 2 isn’t an easy process. If you are already at this stage, it is always helpful to be humble and show regret about what has happened.

Whatever the case, remember that Emerhub can help you with your visa problems in Indonesia 2. Contact us at indonesia@ emerhub.com (Jakarta) or bali@emerhub.com (Bali) for a personal consultation.

Avoid getting deported from Indonesia Deportation and blacklisting in Indonesia will happen if you fail to pay the fine that is due if you have overstayed by less than 60 days. The same applies when you are in the country with a stay permit that is no longer valid, and the overstay exceeds 60 days. However, blacklisting and getting sent out of the country is something you can prevent. Note that the Immigration officials in Indonesia do a good job at keeping their eye on any immigration related violations. It is common that after receiving a tip from someone, the officials will check up on the documents of expats and foreign owned businesses.

Apply for a suitable visa for Indonesia

Overstaying more than 60 days Deportation and blacklisting

Regulations apply to citizens of different countries. For short stays you often do not need a visa at all. Although, there are often travellers who overstay their visit as well.

If you are able to enter without a visa, yet wish to stay longer than 30 days, plan ahead. You cannot extend your stay, neither upgrade it to another type of stay permit. Applying for a new visa allows you to stay longer. Make sure to choose a permit that is most suitable for the purpose of your visit. Read more on short-stay visa on arrival in Indonesia 3.

Indonesia visas for longer than 30 days A business visa is convenient and commonly used – applying for this option before entering the country would be the best way to stay in Indonesia for longer than 30 days. Single-entry or multiple-entry business visas have similar purposes but different durations. The latter also allows you to enter the country multiple times within the period. A single-entry business visa grants you a 60-day stay and is extendable up to 4 times. You have the opportunity to conduct business and study the market. A multiple-entry business visa has the same purpose but is valid for one full year from the date of issuance, but cannot be extended past this. You can also get a business visa together with an Indonesian bank account. This is a great benefit that saves you the trouble of constantly using an overseas bank account for expensive transactions in Indonesia. Emerhub has created a package following a long cooperation with several Indonesian banks – we will deliver your business visa in Indonesia together with a local bank account 1.

Beware of Instagram Groomers Young children love Instagram. So do predatory pedophiles. BY KENNETH YEUNG

One has posted a series of testimonials, supposedly from satisfied customers, such as a woman declaring his magic made her husband leave his second wife and return home. Another is from a young woman, who says the magic prompted her boyfriend to dump his wife and choose her instead. Then there’s one from a woman thanking the dukun for helping her to pass the civil service entrance exam. Gullible superstition aside, Instagram is used on a more sinister level in Indonesia by people peddling child porn and prostitution services. If Instagram wanted to stop this stuff, it could simply delete all account names that use local pornographic terms. But instead, it allows such obscenity flourish.

FACEBOOK PREDATOR

I

nstagram is hugely popular with children and teenagers, making it a favourite app for predatory pedophiles and child pornographers. First, abusers make a phony account posing as a child (usually a girl) or as a youthful fashion photographer. Next, they will contact children, praising their photos and requesting more images, especially more intimate pics. “Great pics. We’d love you to model for us,” is often sufficient bait to lure a child, insecure about their looks, into posing for photos. Requests can start innocently but soon devolve into harassment for lewd photos or worse.

child abusers. Data gained by the NSPCC from British police showed that Instagram’s use by child groomers had more than trebled in a six-month period. Of online grooming offenses recorded by police, 32% were via Instagram, followed by Facebook (23 percent) and Snapchat (14 percent). Girls aged 12 to 15 were most likely to be targeted, although some victims were as young as five. Closer to home, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission has warned that parents need to improve communication with their children, so that kids don’t end up relying Instagram for telling stories and seeking validation and popularity.

In other cases, men in their 20s or older pose as teenage boys on Instagram and groom girls (or boys) by engaging in sexual chats and quickly sharing nude photos before attempting to arrange physical encounters.

PHONY PHOTOGRAPHER

The minimum age limit for the photosharing site and app is 13, but there is no age verification process, so there are many underage users. The safest thing for a child is to delete Instagram and stop wasting their time scrolling through shallow rubbish that teaches them to aspire to online popularity through expensive fashions and unattainable beauty. Alternatively, they can set their account to private, so they’ll be less likely to be contacted by predators.

Aditya Fernanda (20) began trawling Instagram in 2018, looking for accounts of schoolgirls. He would send messages announcing paid modelling jobs. One of his messages read: "Model needed for location shoot, if interested call…. Fee 1 million, shooting at a Majapahit Hotel.”

According to a recent report by the UK National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), Instagram has become the number one platform for

When girls agreed to meet, he would pick them up at their houses, claiming he wanted to drive them to locations for photo shoots. Police said Aditya, using a rented car, took a 17-year-old girl to Kenjeran Beach area, where he threatened her at knifepoint, raped her four times and stole her mobile phone. They said he also took a 15-year-old girl to

the same location, molested her and stole her phone before she escaped.

ONLINE DUKUN

Some dukun (shamans) have taken to Instagram to offer their often insidious services to the unwary. In July 2018, a 24-year-old dukun named Dede Lesmana began contacting women via the app, claiming his supernatural powers could transform them into celebrities and make them irresistible to men. If a woman believed his claptrap, he would ask her to meet at an apartment. He would then instruct her to perform a ritual to attract men. First, she had to undress. Next, she had to consume a drink or food that rendered her unconscious. Then the dukun would rape her. Dede allegedly raped at least four women. His victims were from Jakarta, as well as Bandung and Cikarang in West Java. He had expected they would be too embarrassed and ashamed to report him. One of the women went to police in March 2019 and the dukun was arrested. He now faces up to 12 years in jail if convicted of rape under Article 285 of the Criminal Code. He could also be charged under Article 286, which carries a maximum prison term of nine years for “any person who out of marriage has carnal knowledge of a woman whom he knows is unconscious or helpless.” There are numerous dukun using Instagram to offer an array of services, such as success in romance, politics and business.

As Instagram soars in popularity among children, Facebook is viewed by many kids as uncool because it is “for parents and other adults.” However, plenty of young people do use Facebook, putting themselves at risk of being contacted and groomed by predators if their account settings are not at maximum privacy. Irma (not her real name), a 14-year-old girl from East Java, was befriended via Facebook by a 20-year-old man, Danu Asmara Aji. Danu invited her to meet him at 7pm on March 21 at Kota Park in Krian, Sidoarjo regency. Irma drove there on her motorcycle, even though the minimum age for a motorcycle licence in Indonesia is 17. After a chat at the park, Danu invited her to a house, where three of his friends, aged 19–23, were waiting. The men plied Irma with alcohol and took turns raping her. Danu then offered to escort the girl home, but on the way they were stopped by three more friends of Danu. They stole Irma’s motorbike and also raped her. She later reported to police, who five days later managed to arrest Danu and three other suspects. Parents concerned about what their kids get up to online could start by setting a good example and not being vain, superficial, sloth-like social media junkies themselves. This will afford much more time for actually playing with their children, rather than each family member being engrossed in their own gadget. Parents could also ensure that children’s accounts are set to private.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Photography: A Visual Poetry JAKARTA They say that photographs are hidden words that are strong enough to convey a message through the images captured through the lens. This first ever Raffles Christian School - Kelapa Gading’s Photography Exhibition was held on March 20–24, 2019 at Mall Kelapa Gading. It aimed to express a powerful thought, and that is to showcase how Rafflessians are not only talented academically, but in other areas too, such as photography. As we build up our skills, specifically in photography, we learn that we can shine in ways that we have never done before through our photos. With the motto “Eyes like a shutter, mind like a lens”, the distinctive style of each photographer made each and every photo taken unique. Our CCA Photography consists of 28 secondary students who are passionate for snapping a variety of interests from everyday life, exciting times, and most specially the things that are close to our hearts. We are eternally grateful to our school, as this is the first year for CCA Photography and we have been given the chance to unleash our inner artists.

Aston Priority Simatupang Hotel & Conference Centre: Ramadhan Kareem

A sahur menu is offered at Rp120,000 ++ per person to begin the fasting day, and you may end it with a breakfasting buffet at Canary Coffee Shop – located at the lobby level – and Canary Terrace dedicated to those who love dining in the open air. The breakfasting buffet, which comes with

an assortment of Tajil sweets and hot tea, is available at Rp200,000 ++ per person. In addition, Momiji Japanese Restaurant is offering a Ramadhan Japanese Set Menu “Ozen,” with choices of starters, soups, and main course, including tajils starting at Rp100,000++ per person. Enjoy the benefit of 10 percent off for early birds, by reserving in advance for our dining buffet experience at the Canary Coffee Shop from April 21 until May 4, 2019 and a further 20 percent from May 28 to June 4, 2019. Halal Bi Halal package is purposely designed for groups or communities at Rp200,000 ++ per person, with a minimum of 30 guests, and it is available from June 5 to 12, 2019. A Ramadhan Special Discount up to 25 percent is offered to guarantee guests an unforgettable rest in an exquisite range of rooms and suites for one night, valid during the Ramadhan season and including complimentary breakfast or sahur for two, and Wi-Fi throughout the stay as well.

This experience absolutely encouraged us to take more photos and it certainly felt extremely rewarding to see our pictures at an exhibition. We were excited to communicate more meaningful messages through our photos. Our passion for photography has become an avenue to help build houses for our fellow Indonesians who are in need of proper shelter and better homes. All 43 photos were sold at Rp1 million each and a huge part of that money will be donated to Habitat for Humanity Indonesia.

OBSERVATIONS

Fool’s Fodder BY DANIEL POPE

protective goggles, and standing well back when your plate of chips is caused to bubble and sizzle and give off toxic fumes. However, proving that all things Indonesian truly are smaller and weaker than in America, it tastes barely vinegary at all. This is the soda pop of condiments. It might come in handy if you’ve run out of lemonade. People who drink fine wine and spirits in Indonesia likely send their butler to pick it up in the BMW. Owing to high taxation and restrictions, imported booze is pricey in this country (that BMW is also subject to luxury goods tax and import tariffs, making it as expensive as a space craft). Cheaper wine can be obtained from duty-free outlets, but they’re restricted to selling to diplomats and other, elevated folk. The city’s duty-free shops weren’t always so meticulous, and would sell to all-comers unless a government inspector was paying a visit. My local duty-free, which had always been loose with the regulations, began selling cases of Becks lager for less than half the original price. The expired sell-by date put nobody off. After all, this was alcohol, not milk. As you can imagine, the shop was besieged by bargainhunting boozers. Legend has it there were removal vans, convoys, air-lifts. Jakarta was exposed as a city desperately bereft of decent and reasonably priced German beer. I took a stack home in a bajaj. I slotted the cases of this cheap Becks into every empty space in my already cramped apartment. For a while my place resembled the Trotters’ flat in Only Fools and Horses with its piles of “hooky” goods. I also cleared my porch to accommodate the empties.

A

ccording to a British poll, “Beanz Meanz Heinz” is the greatest advertising slogan of all time. This means nothing in Indonesia of course, where “Beanz Meanz ABC.” I don’t touch beans myself – any beans – but one scornful expatriate informs me that the local brand is “of inferior quality, tastes over-flavoured, and is probably loaded with chemicals.” That’s a bleak impression. It seems that if you can’t stomach locally canned baked beans, beanz meanz going without. That’s a shame because eating food that you like is important. When I taught at an oil company in a remote part of Kalimantan, in an area that was as “in the jungle” as it gets – with monkeys walking along my classroom window sills, I was invited to share the Western meals that were specially prepared every day for a group of visiting Norwegian oil workers. The food was good, and I was happy. Once the Norwegians had left though, I had to eat the unappetising canteen food. My morale plummeted. Without meals to look forward to, my days were barren. I dreamed of fish and chips. Even bad ones. The food that I had once ordered at the Manchester United Bar & Café in Bandung which, being themed on a British sporting institution, would be expected to know how to cut up and fry a spud, was mediocre. The chips were so needle-thin you could have darned your socks with them, the batter was like a twisted mass of corn flakes, and the fish was barely detectable – it looked like the remains of a fish that had wriggled free of the net. But the worst travesty? There was no malt vinegar. Admittedly, malt vinegar is a British supermarket mainstay not commonly available in Indonesia (some people quip that it’s easier to obtain grade-A plutonium), a list which includes Marmite, Coleman’s English Mustard, and Paxo stuffing. It’s not hard to find apple cider vinegar, or red wine vinegar. There’s even balsamic vinegar, for those who call their chips pommes frites and serve them nicely arranged on a cheeseboard.

“Once the Norwegians had left though, I had to eat the unappetising canteen food. My morale plummeted. Without meals to look forward to, my days were barren. I dreamed of fish and chips. Even bad ones.”

You used to be able to buy a variety named “Fish & Chip Vinegar,” which featured a British flag prominently on its label, and could easily have taken pride of place on the table tops of any English seaside town café. However, the small print revealed that this vinegar was made in the USA. Proving that all things American truly are bigger and stronger than elsewhere, it tasted much maltier than normal. This was the hard stuff – the Carlsberg Special Brew of condiments. It took some getting used to. Vinegar is cuka in Indonesian. The standard one is sold under the worrying name acetic acid, and comes in a small, clear bottle. The name suggests that you should sprinkle it on your food with caution, perhaps wearing

Our year of boozing dangerously ended when the next consignment was put on sale. This time, the Becks was nine months out of date, a length of time deemed risky by all but the most nonchalant of drinkers - even though it was cheaper than before. By now it might only be drinkable as a hair of the dog for a hungover gorilla, or else more suited to sprinkling on chips than swigging from a glass. So, it was farewell to Becks and hello once more to Bintang. Nothing lasts forever. There is one Western product, however, that seems to have a permanent home on the shelves of supermarkets catering to the middle class, such as Hero. Like noodles, it’s never out of stock. Unlike noodles, religion forbids nearly 90 percent of the population from eating it. We’re talking about Spam - the self-proclaimed king of pork luncheon meats. Just look for the shelves labelled with the warning “Mengandung Babi” (with a picture of a fat, pink pig) and you’ll find rows of the stuff. I mention this because I hear that Spam with baked beans is good (along with Spam, egg, and chips; Spam, Spam, egg, bacon and Spam; and Spam, Spam, Spam, sausage and Spam). Monty Python’s “Spam” comedy sketch doesn’t stipulate whether those baked beans should be Heinz or ABC. Nor whether malt vinegar should be added to the chips. Not that I care. I still pine for the Norwegian food that helped me through the isolation in Kalimantan. Not unlike the dead parrot that once pined for the Norwegian fiords in fact.
