Indonesia expat ISSUE 241

Living in Indonesia as an expat offers a whole host of ways to interact with different cultures, with so many local cultures to explore as well as those of fellow expats from around the globe. Food is probably the most obvious way that you can get to know the country; with an adventurous palate you can travel all over the archipelago without leaving your local district. The nightlife in Jakarta is thriving, and more and more international acts are passing through from a breadth of genres. There’s plenty to explore and even more people ready to share your love of music. If you’re more interested in sedate and relaxing experiences, the countryside, beaches, and mountains are perfect for weekend exploration. Indonesia is growing and developing fast, and the expat community is stable and ready to cater to your needs. This issue has a lifestyle theme, with articles relating to expat life in our chosen country. Our column Meet the Expat explores the story of Matteo Guerinoni, the businesses he runs in the country, and why his future is firmly in Indonesia. Stephanie Brokes’ story “A Jungle Stay in Gunung Leuser National Park, Aceh – North Sumatra” delves into the jungles and wildlife in a lesser explored part of the country. If you enjoy the green but not the animals, “Golfing in Jakarta: A Guide for Golfers Visiting or New to Jakarta” should tell you all you need to know about the local fairways. To get the travel inspiration flowing, Joanne Rushton’s article “The Soul of Padang is on the Streets” will introduce you to a different side of the city. If you’re in need of a guide to local supermarket problems, “Lost in the Supermarket” might help you through your experience. Looking for a new challenge in life? “The Eight Best Jobs for an Expat in Bali” is surely your go-to read. After all your reading you can turn to our Announcements page which will give you the lowdown on all of the events around the country that might interest you, along with some great deals and hotel recommendations.

MEET THE EXPAT

Matteo Guerinoni Indonesia Expat sat down with Matteo Guerinoni, an Italian former motorbike racer and the founder of Il Gelato di Matteo, a gelato laboratory in Indonesia, who has spent half of his life living here – 27 years to be precise. Who is your role model? You could say I learned everything by myself. I’ve made many mistakes and learned from them. If you’re talking about a mentor that taught me what I know, there isn’t really one. I did used to have a business partner at Café Pisa. I gained a lot of knowledge from him in the field of business. His name was Pramono Sungkono; he has passed away. He was a partner at the Pisa Café. If one person could be thought of as a mentor it would be Pak Pramono. What is it about Indonesia that makes you feel at home? I think there are similarities between Indonesia and Italy. In Italy, family is number one and that’s the same in Indonesia, so I am very happy. Even though my family is in Italy, when I joined the Pisa Café, I felt I had a family in Indonesia. Mr. Sungkono was like my father. Even when I got married, Mr. Sungkono was my best man. His family is very kind to me, I really appreciate them. My success here is partly down to the Sungkono family.

What’s the story of your business in Indonesia? I came to Indonesia in 1992. Within the first year, by April 1993, I opened my first ice cream shop in Menteng called the Pisa Café. That business ran for 15 years until 2007. By that time, I had three restaurants and a further seven franchises, but I decided to sell everything at the end of that year. I sold all of my shares and decided to become a freelance consultant. While working as a consultant, I also focused on my Gelato di Matteo business. The business was good, so I focused on seriously developing it; I decided to move to BSD City in South Tangerang and set up my gelato office there. What is the difference between gelato and ice cream? Gelato has a smoother texture and is home-made, while ice cream is made using an industrial process with industrial machinery. When did you get into the gelato business? I got started in the gelato business when I was 18 years old. I started as a normal worker in a small gelato shop in Bergamo, Italy. There, I started to understand the process of making good gelato by watching how they created it, and I learned how to balance different flavours from a gelato master. Besides gelato, what other businesses do you have? Now I supply my gelato to hotels, cafés, and restaurants in Jakarta and Bali, I also have a company that imports special, off-road motorbike parts, Enduro Extreme Shop. There’s a showroom and a workshop based in BSD. 6

I think there are similarities between Indonesia and Italy. In Italy, family is number one and that’s the same in Indonesia, so I am very happy.

Tell us about your passion for racing. I have been involved in the racing world since I was eight years old. But at the age of 18, I decided to quit racing. This was mainly because my mother had died and my father was the sole breadwinner in the house. I recently got back into it at the age of 33. I’ve achieved various accomplishments; I won the Indonesian national championship of Supersports twice and Superbike once. Even before my return to motorbike racing, I actually still did some karting to satisfy my need for speed.

You’re also known as a commentator on several national TV shows, are you still involved in that? I have been a commentator on Trans TV’s Moto GP program for eight years. It’s been an amazing experience and I’m still active as a Moto GP commentator, but now for Fox Sports Asia Channel. I also took part in Indonesia’s Masterchef Season 4 in 2015 as judge; they did offer me to be a judge in Season 5 as well, but I politely declined.

How has the food industry changed over time in Indonesia? In the past, the food and beverage business was easy because there wasn’t much competition. The quality of competition wasn’t high. Now, the competition is good. When I first arrived in Indonesia, the competition was not as tight as it is now. Food businesses were starting to grow when I arrived, you could say that I grew at the same time as Jakarta did.

What is your main motivation for running your businesses? When I graduated from high school, my mother passed away, but by that time my parents were already divorced so I had to look after myself and my younger sister. I chose to have two jobs; by day I worked as a land surveyor and I kept on freelancing in restaurants in the evenings. I started working in the kitchen, then as a waiter, before moving behind the bar. This motivated me to keep up my passion for the food and beverage industry. My experience has helped me to build up 22 restaurants in Indonesia.

What message do you have for anyone looking to start a restaurant business? First of all, they must have a clear concept combined with great food. They must have an in-depth understanding about the business because the food industry is not just a hobby. So many people just want to try it for fun because they think it is easy, but they often underestimate the fact that making a mistake due to lack of knowledge about the business could lead to an unsuccessful and even dangerous outcome.

SPORTS GOLFING IN JAKARTA

A Guide for Golfers Visiting or New to Jakarta BY KATE PARADIS

D

aily walking would be nice, yeah? Indonesia, the world’s 4th most populous country, came in dead last for the number of walking steps taken by citizens, in a study of 46 countries by Stanford University. Jakarta especially, is one of the most difficult cities in the world to maintain an active lifestyle due to lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and recreational green space. One way to get out there, get exercise, and walk in the great outdoors, is to play a round of golf. Our concrete jungle has great courses! Golf season is year-round, the courses are beautiful, and it’s one of the only ways to have a peaceful, quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta’s chaos. Here’s a quick guide: ETIQUETTE • Relax. Many visitors have reported that golfing in Indonesia is a bit more laid back than in western countries. Standard rules of golf apply, but the courses are not generally pretentious and have welcoming, friendly vibes. • All courses provide caddies as part of the green fee. They are not pro-golfers but they are trained and generally know the greens well. They can be as involved in your game as you like. You can have your ball teed up and lined up for each hole if that’s what you prefer. Some will offer tips on club choice and direction off the tee-box. One of the best luxuries is that they spot your ball for you and help you look for it in the rough if your swing goes awry. Tipping is expected. For 18-holes, it is common to tip the caddy Rp200,000 – 300,000 after your last hole. If you find a caddy you like, get their name, and request them next time you book, as they can greatly improve your game! • Phone ahead for Tee-Time reservations. • Prices can be significantly higher on weekends and national holidays: check the websites or phone for updated rates.

WHERE TO GO Great Layouts with Great Views: • Rainbow Hills Golf Club: Three course options (27 holes), located in Sentul. Stunning, picturesque mountain views, a challenging layout, superb clubhouse facilities and a practice range. Award winning in South East Asia, designed by J. Michael Poellot Golf Design Group. • Jagorawi Golf & Country Club: Two Courses, old and new (45 holes), just off the Jagorawi Toll in Depok. Riverside and jungle scenery, mountain views on some holes. Want to test your stamina? Each August this course has a walking-only charity tournament of all 45 holes. • Royale Jakarta Golf Club: Challenging, international championship-style layout (27 holes), practice range, spa, superb facilities. Online tee-time booking available. Southeast Jakarta (near Halim Airport) • Pondok Indah Golf Course: (18 holes) Located in South Jakarta’s Pondok Indah, premium location within Jakarta, driving range (lit at night), excellent facilities, a favourite for corporate clients. GOLF ON A BUDGET An afternoon well-spent for the casual golfer on a budget, is at Pangkalan Jati. It is in South Jakarta (technically Depok), just south of Cilandak and offers very affordable rates. There is a graveyard in the

middle of one of the holes on the 9th hole, and motorbikes can be spotted crossing fairways: so very Jakarta! The course is not in PGA-tour type of condition, but it’s a perfect place to do a quick nine or casual 18, get the body moving, and grab a Katsu Curry and refreshing Es Kelapa. VIRTUAL GOLF Virtual golf saves time (traffic, rain delays) and gives some unique tools to work on your game. If in South Jakarta, try SG Golf on Jl. Prapanca VI Dalam (new location also opening in Bintaro June 2019). Men’s and women’s clubs are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. The technology gives you enough information to seriously improve your game, with instant feedback on distance, direction and even video replay of your swing, which you can replay and slow down to critique. There is no time limit and the owners are great; you can stay on after closing to finish up your 18 holes if needed. Rates are low compared to a real course: only Rp150,000 for 18 holes 10am–4pm, or Rp250,000 from 4pm to midnight. Enjoy the food at the small café there, or order in your own food for more variety. They have many virtual courses to choose from; you will not be bored by the selection.

NIGHT GOLF Senayan National Golf Club is fully lit at night, and it’s the only place in Jakarta to golf after sundown. Don’t expect to find your ball every time you hit into the rough, but it is lit well enough to have a fun time after work. Heads up though! This course’s layout is quite tight, so watch for flying balls and heed the “Fore!” warnings. SURF THE FAIRWAYS WITH GOLF BOARDS The only course in Jakarta with Golf Boards is near Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, at Cengkareng Golf Club. If you want some added adventure in your round, try them out! They are a fun alternative to golf carts. You ride them standing in a surf board stance, carving your way down the fairways. It’s a great time if you don’t take your golf game too seriously! Regular carts and walking are also options at this course. GETTING THERE • If you don’t have a private driver and car, BlueBird, Grab or a Go-Car via the Go-Jek app will get you to the course. If you are going to the courses that are just outside Jakarta and want to ensure you have a ride back with minimal waiting time, hire the car to standby for you. TIPS FOR THE WEATHER • It’s hot. Sunscreen up, cover up, bring an umbrella. Bringing ice water and a cold towel helps beat the heat and humidity for the 4–5 hours it takes to play the round. • Insect Repellent: Dengue is a real risk in Jakarta and there is standing water on the courses. • Check the forecast, especially during rainy season (October–April)

Golf is a great way to take in stunning views and get exercise, get out there!

TIPS

The Eight Best Jobs for an Expat in Bali BY POLLY CHRISTENSEN

B

ali is considered a dream holiday destination, and some visitors quickly move on from being a tourist to an expat, turning the island into a home and workplace. In many cases, expatriates choose to live in Bali because the cost of living is cheaper than other destinations in South East Asia, but Bali can be a tough place for expats to find employment - even for those who hold an excellent track record of skills and experience, because finding skilled locals costs far less. However, if you’re passionate about working in Bali or interested in the opportunities, here are the eight best expat jobs for 2019.

DIVE INSTRUCTOR

Diving is a great way to relocate to the tropics, but don’t expect to get rich as the pay is modest and seasonal. Known as one of the top 15 diving destinations in the world, it’s no surprise that Bali is home to a lot of diving operators and instructors, many of whom are legally certified foreigners. There are many choices of fivestar, certified dive shops available around the island, and finding a position as a dive instructor can be a great opportunity. It’s a great choice if you have a certification from PADI or SSI instructor courses, and you’re passionate about exploring underwater sites with beginner divers. Local wonders include Tulamben, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Penida.

WORK IN HOSPITALITY FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER

Foreigners from a native English-speaking country have an advantage when finding work in Bali as many schools are in regular need of English teachers or tutors. Overseas foreign language teachers are welcome at kindergartens, high schools, and universities, and the pay can be diverse depending on your own educational credentials. Teaching offers valuable cultural insights through close interaction with locals, and Balinese students are social and inquisitive about foreign cultures, making for a pleasant transfer of knowledge. Pay rates vary, with international schools paying the most, national schools coming in second and other English institutes paying the least.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER

A large number of infrastructure and construction projects are continuously being developed on Bali and the outer islands. Many senior construction and project management positions are held by expats who have the experience, credentials, and qualifications for the job on offer and basic language skills to manage a team. All of these skills increase a person’s chance of finding work at a foreign-operated company and will improve your salary. 10

Indonesia expat ISSUE 241

If you’re looking to blend into Bali culture, hospitality is the perfect industry to become a part of the community in which you work and learn all about local traditions, or dishes, while working in an energetic, and fast-paced environment. High numbers of established fourto five-star hotels offer positions for qualified chefs and general managers with competitive salaries and are often filled by foreigners. Other luxurious private villas on the island have expats managing their operations too, as they better understand the needs of visiting tourists.

YOGA INSTRUCTOR

Providing you have good credentials, Bali is perhaps one of the world’s best places to practice yoga and wellbeing, with almost every resort and yoga centre on the island regularly featuring visiting “guest yoga instructors.” The town of Ubud has a thriving yoga scene and is the capital for all things spiritual in Bali. Yoga studios offer many different kinds of yoga, welcoming practitioners of all levels and disciplines. Teachers enjoy the opportunity to exchange knowledge with like-minded yogis from all over the world. The annual Bali Spirit Yoga Festival is a great place to start.

ARTIST

If you are a model, photographer, DJ, or dancer then opportunities are plentiful in Bali, as events and festivals are held regularly and usually require your skills. Jazz singers and musicians are in constant demand, with hip bars and nightclubs featuring live entertainment regularly. It is important to realise that production companies will usually employ you on a short-term contract, and some people accept this precarious way of life as a concession in order to fulfil their dreams; others find the lack of reliable money arrangements unsettling. An Artist’s Visa is now required for DJs, artists, and photographers who are going to work in the Republic of Indonesia.

START YOUR OWN BUSINESS

From starting your IT consultancy firm, becoming a restaurateur, to creating an import-export company, there are many opportunities to launch your own business in Bali. You’ll improve your professional skills while forging personal connections to help you get ahead. Be warned though: starting a business in Indonesia, as a foreigner, is not without its bureaucratic hurdles, and few people make it successfully. Now Indonesian business is international, it is recommended to get that extra layer of experience by learning first-hand how to communicate between cultures with some Indonesian language basics.

STARTUP ENTREPRENEUR

The best reasons to create a startup business in Bali include cheap living, affordable rent, and relatively low labour costs. You can also mix your personal and professional life successfully and make friends at home “green with envy.” A popular method to do this is by blogging or travel writing, and starting a YouTube channel with affiliate marketing or influencers. The growing number of collaborative co-working spaces with fast, reliable internet connection on the island encourages the establishment of companies and dynamic environments to fully support the development of startups.

CAN A FOREIGNER BUY PROPERTY IN INDONESIA?

Note that you can order due diligence from Emerhub’s property lawyers. 4. Sales purchase agreement Sales purchase agreement (SPA) obligates a seller to sell, a buyer to buy and sets the terms. Sign it in front of a public notary authorised for the area (PPAT). Make sure the SPA protects your interests, and you understand all the terms. Emerhub can draft the SPA for you and advise on which local notary to use. Once you’ve signed the SPA you also need to transfer the down payment. 5. Final payment Final transfer and the signing of the Deed Of Sell and Buy should be made simultaneously in front of the public notary.

Buying property is one of the most common ways for Indonesians to protect and increase the value of their assets. Not everyone knows how to do it safely or not lose money. In this article, we’ll give you a step by step guide on how to make better property investments in Indonesia.

Buying or leasing property as a foreign national in Indonesia Register a company (PT PMA) to buy property The safest way to purchase property is to register a foreign-owned company (PT PMA). Your PT PMA can buy property (except land) with the Right to Use title. When you sell the property to a local investor, then they can change the title to Right to Own. Get a residence permit (KITAS) to lease property You need to apply for a residence permit (KITAS). To lease, you’ll need to sign a Lease Agreement in front of a public notary.

Indonesia expat ISSUE 241

If you don’t have a KITAS and a person to sponsor it, then using the employer of record service is the easiest way to get it. Avoid buying property under a local person’s name Some foreign nationals still believe that the only way they can proceed with a property deal in Indonesia is when it’s under a local person’s name. While the local person can have the best intentions, it’s still an investment based on blind trust. Hence, no matter how well you know the local person, this is one of the surest ways to lose money in Indonesia. If the local person owns the property, they are under no legal pressure to give you control over it. Property transactions are big enough to justify the expense of setting up a company.

Six steps to buying property in Indonesia correctly Emerhub’s latest blog post describes the following six steps in detail. In short, here is what you need to be wary of when considering to enter into a property deal in Indonesia:

1. Use professional registered real estate agents Property ownership structures can be complicated, especially if it was inherited. In most cases dealing with amateurs, such as helpful friends, will complicate the process. 2. Check the property licences There are two crucially important documents from the viewpoint of buying property in Indonesia: • The Certificate of the Property • The Building Licence/ IMB If you are having difficulties receiving these two documents from the seller, you should not proceed with the transaction. 3. Conduct due diligence Conducting due diligence comes right after you have everything settled with the property licences. Don’t break under the pressure of the seller, even if they claim to have a line of buyers besides you. It’s better to lose a good deal than to rush into a bad one. In our blog, we’ve highlighted the key questions you should ask when it comes to land due diligence.

Note that both parties need to pay an additional tax: • Seller pays 5% of the transaction value • Buyer pays 10% of the transaction value Seller may also propose an “unofficial” price to reduce the tax. Before accepting that, keep in mind the following: each property has a Tax Object Price (NJOP) that defines the amount of property taxes you need to pay. Your transaction price cannot be lower than that. The local government should also find that amount realistic, otherwise it may lead to an audit. As an extra, we’ve also provided an example of lowering sales tax on property - find the calculation from the original article published on Emerhub’s blog. 6. Change of ownership Once you complete the previous steps, the public notary will transfer the ownership to you!

Get in touch with Emerhub either in Bali (bali@emerhub.com) or Jakarta (indonesia@emerhub. com) to discuss buying property in Indonesia further.

URBAN ART

The Soul of Padang is on the Streets BY JOANNE RUSHTON (IMAGES BY: INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT @PADANGGRAFFITIUNITED)

initial activity, the players of the Padang art scene resurfaced again.” The first event was focused on local talent but over the last five years the festival has gone from strength to strength. The following year, PYC was attended by artists from all over Indonesia, and over the last six festivals there have been over five hundred participants from all over the world, including Australia, Germany, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico. So important has PYC become to the local community, the most recent event in March 2019 was in collaboration with the local general election committee. Zikri explains that he worked with the local KPU, aiming to highlight the success of the recent general election. Ideas of fake news, sensationalism, nationalism, and civic pride were explored on the walls surrounding a community sports facility in the biggest celebration of art in the city.

T

he streets on the edge of Padang’s Chinatown are crumbling. The various states of disrepair range from shutters swinging in the wind from a dilapidated window frame, to columns of old red bricks jutting out of the ground, reaching for nowhere, and caressed by creepers and vines. Formerly ornate façades still show the pride once taken over the area, but the rot seems to be in it for the long haul. And then you turn a corner, and you are greeted like an intrepid adventurer with some stunning graffiti. Padang comes across as a quaint city by the sea with a nice fishing village attached, not the place where artists congregate to decorate the walls. When viewed in this setting, it shows one of the greatest things about graffiti and street art – its accessibility. First, and of course; it’s free to see, and it’s not stuck in a big museum which can feel stuffy and daunting. Street art at its most raw is also unpretentious. It’s easy to understand, the ideas are broad and the metaphors are simple. As an example, there is a mural, on the corner of Jalan Batang Arau and an unnamed road, of a bulldozer as a monster razing a playground. Even if you don’t understand the Bahasa Indonesia text included, you can clearly understand the point the artist is making in railing against the destruction of community facilities. Street art is done for pure desire, rather than any financial gain from the artist (although it does add to a portfolio and reputation for those wanting to get paid for their talents). There is freedom of expression in this form of art, rather than

14

Indonesia expat ISSUE 241

A city with graffiti is a city with soul. It shows that there are people willing to express themselves for the sake of it, ready to push boundaries, and challenge, and sometimes subvert, a society’s mainstream ideas. “Before 2006, it was very difficult for graffiti to be accepted by the community, because it was considered vandalism,” says Zikri, echoing sentiments of many street artists around the world. “But we have consistently proved that graffiti can be accepted in public spaces, society, and even by government!” he continues.

And then you turn a corner, and you are greeted like an intrepid adventurer with some stunning graffiti.

being constrained by a museum curator or the need to fit into a certain style or school of art. Along Jalan Ps. Borong III you’ll find a stunning piece of work; two elephants meeting around a corner, lovingly intertwining their trunks that burst with colour. There is passion and love in this piece of art that makes you stop and think for a moment. That it sits on a back street of town adds to the beauty because this is probably where that message is most needed. All of this creativity and expression has been the brainchild of one local man, Zikri Zeek. He is the founder and community force behind the festival Paint Your City, which he founded in 2014. Zikri says, “The reason for creating Paint Your City is to restore the glory of street art in the city of Padang.” He is a local artist who was looking for a platform for his work and this was a way to bring graffiti to the fore in the city. In 2014, 12 artists gathered by the railway tracks in Padang and created a mural, each artist having their own distinct section, with each work tied into the next. Zikri says this was a great success and a turning point for graffiti and street art, “from this

Indeed, the reputation of street art has been rehabilitated in the last 20 odd years. The likes of Banksy turned what was once regarded as a nuisance into a valid art form that had real value. In years gone by, owners of the walls and shop fronts that would get tagged or painted would spend time and effort to clean it off, whereas now some places even pay an artist to graffiti them. The support in the community for PYC has extended to the proprietors of the buildings being decorated, “the building owners are all co-operative and always support our work,” Zikri assures. It seems intuitive to support such works by those who own the walls, it brings people to the area which, in the case of Chinatown in Padang, could well bring about revitalisation of the run-down area. Usually, where art explores, people follow. YouTube and Instagram are the homes for the collection of graffiti and street art created through Paint Your City. The videos that document the festivals, the artists, and their creations show the evolution from the twelve artists and one wall back in 2014, to a massive mural on a bridge in 2016, and the recent election inspired event at the sports fields. The Instagram account @padanggraffitiunited hosts a range of pieces from the festival and other murals by local artists. In Zikri’s own words, “Padang, even though it is a small city… has a big artistic movement that is extraordinary.” For art lovers, a trip to Padang seems almost necessary and a follow of their Instagram page will ensure you get to know about the next Paint Your City festival that Zikri has in the making.

A Jungle Stay in Gunung Leuser National Park, Aceh – North Sumatra BY STEPHANIE BROOKES (IMAGES BY DAVID METCALF)

W

After lunch, I was up for some rafting and so clambered into the back of an old, weathered truck, along with a folded raft, a bunch of oars, and two guides. We headed off to explore more wildlife – this time at the river.

ithin one day of arriving in Ketambe Village in Gunung Leuser National Park, I had spotted three gibbons, five Thomas’ leaf monkeys, and three Sumatran orangutans. You have to get up early to catch the wildlife; by 5.30am my forest lodge was a hive of activity. People were packing water and snacks, strapping on their camera equipment, lacing up their leg gaiters, and hurriedly heading out the door for their morning trek.

Travelling down the river gave me a great insight into village life that I was able to observe intermittently along the river’s edge. As our raft passed villages, people waved and cheered. The children would scramble and fall over each other to try and keep pace with the raft. They would then provide some entertainment by jumping off rocks, impersonating animal calls, and generally clowning about. Great river entertainment!

Gunung Leuser National Park in Aceh and North Sumatra provinces, offers a wonderful wilderness experience. The park is actually on the border of both Aceh and North Sumatra provinces. Most people head to Bukit Lawang on the Sumatran side for trekking, as it’s well-established; however, it attracts hundreds of tourists. Ketambe in Aceh is a more authentic wilderness escape. For some reason, Ketambe has remained under the tourist radar and let’s hope it stays that way.

The trip combined a series of swift-paced rapids with lots of slow, relaxed stretches on a gentler river current. When the cool, clear river slowed down to a meander, we tucked the oars inside the raft, soaked in the serenity and silence of the wide-open river and simply floated.

Several trails start right from your forest lodge, and within five minutes you are in dense forest. I followed my guide’s advice. We walked in silence, obeying the rules of trekking, “follow the leader” and “when the guide stops, you stop.” Next instruction – “stand dead still, wait and listen.” The guide followed a trail of fruit droppings, dispersed here and there on the forest floor. This meant a bit of bushwhacking, but I was up for that. Soon enough, the guide signalled for me to stop. He pointed up, and there it was – a huge orangutan sitting in the canopy of the rainforest, towering 30 metres above me. He pointed out not just one, but three orangutans. It was a moment that simply took my breath away. I don’t know why; maybe it’s the gentleness of these big, hairy primates, or the haunting thought that our DNA is so similar to theirs. They have the capability of showing deep emotion on their faces and in their actions. For me, that’s a tangible sign of our similarity. Certainly, when you see your first orangutan in the wild, it’s a very powerful experience. It takes a trained eye to spot orangutans. Unless they are on the move, they are masters of camouflage. They sit very high in the treetops where they will make a new nest every night. Within minutes of spotting the three orangutans, a family of gibbons came into view. Their high-pitched, lyrical calls were beautiful. Their call is actually a song

which gathers pace and lasts for about 20 minutes. Next, my guide pointed to the east and there, gliding through a narrow gap in the trees, was a magnificent, lone hornbill cruising gracefully on a steamy jungle airstream. The hornbill continued on its path as its wings brushed foliage on either side. I headed back to the lodge for lunch and eagerly swapped stories with other travellers. Two Germans had seen seven orangutans on their morning trek and were going back for more.

Towering trees provided shade. Now and again we spotted giant black beehives dangling from the high treetops - wild honey on tap if only you could reach it. I was assured by my guide that the locals know how to scale the tall trees to deathdefying heights and gather the honey, which they do at around 3am when the bees are sleepy, and there is less risk of being stung. I asked the guide about tigers, and he explained, “I have worked in the park for seven years and have only seen one tiger. We were on a seven-day trek, and I spotted the tiger at the riverbank. I was very lucky. Also, we have herds of wild elephants here in the park. If you go on a seven-day hike or longer, you might chance a sighting, but it is very rare. Mostly, we only come back with tales of elephant track sightings.” The “big five” are in the park – elephants, tigers, orangutans, rhinoceros, clouded leopards, and the smaller sized sun bear. At around 85-95 percent, your chances of seeing orangutans are by far the best. Along with exotic wildlife, and the world’s largest flower, the Rafflesia, there are over 10,000 plant species. It’s a nature-lovers’ dream and, if you stay in Ketambe on the Aceh side of the park, you can have a very close encounter with nature and walk the forest trails with very few other tourists. By visiting, you also help to support a fantastic, low-impact eco-tourism program and preserve what is indeed one of the many unique and beautiful wild places in Indonesia.

OBSERVATION

Lost in the Supermarket BY SIMON PITCHFORTH

environments; see Jakarta’s love affair with the shopping mall. The franchisation of the world has also deterritorialised it. Walking around the bright interior of my local mini-mart, I could be anywhere on the planet, or at least anywhere in Indonesia. Shops like this are coming to dominate every city in the world, giving lie to the myth that the free-market engenders competition, choice and diversity. Moving up the scale though, Kemchicks, Ranch Market, the very posh Hero Kemang, and various other super posh supermarkets are all available if you’re after the real expatriate, imported deal and some American comfort foods such as Paul Newman’s spaghetti sauce, Trump steaks, or Pee-Wee Herman fudge fingers. Basically, the kind of food that fuels the US rustbelt but available over here at vastly inflated prices. Perhaps, all is jealousy though because, as a citizen of the UK, many of the chocolate bars and, of course, Marmite, from my own fair Albion are lamentably thin on the ground.

However, that’s not to say that there aren’t temptations lurking inside ready to grab your wallet by the throat and throttle the hell out of it. Indeed, the urge to blow half of my monthly salary on blue cheese and red wine can sometimes be overpowering to the extent that I have to go and stand next to the Magnums freezer to cool off and generally relocate my sense of homeostatic balance before continuing with my weekly shop. The other timeout option is to head outside to peruse the noticeboard, which is usually full of glowing recommendations for newly unemployed maids and drivers provided by former expat employers. “Agus mows the lawn like a trooper and his wife can cook a mean meatloaf. I have no hesitation in recommending him for a similar position with another clan of carpetbaggers.”

astidious shoppers may prefer the rarified aisles of fancy expat supermarkets, but spare a thought for the city’s traditional markets. The traders down at my local pasar are always good for a bit of banter, a few pleasantries, a quick pry into my personal affairs, and a cheeky eggplant-related innuendo or two. Pasar Jaya has modernised many of the 153 Jakarta markets that it owns in recent years, which may tempt some of you inside, along with the 2 million other Jakartans who visit them every day. Having originally ponged like septic tanks and resembled bombed out Beirut hospitals, Jakarta’s markets are now rather cleaner, brighter, and more sanitary in general, although the nature of the beast means that they’re still not quite as fragrant as a branch of Ranch Market. However, one more deeply rooted cultural divide does remain. Specifically, the kind of folk who are likely to frequent traditional markets are also likely to rise from their slumbers at some ungodly hour of the morning – the middle of the night as far as I’m concerned – before bounding enthusiastically down to their local wet market to snap up all of the best fresh meat and vegetables. Thus, all of the good stuff tends to be purchased, taken home, and cooked before I’ve even had my morning cup of Java. In other words, a journey to your local market after around 10am is likely to result in a somewhat less than gourmet dinner of chicken’s feet fricassee all washed down with a brown banana smoothie. More recently, however, mini-markets have proliferated the length and breadth of the country, sometimes next to each other. Their hygienic strip lighting and brightly togged out staff are a direct challenge to the concrete catacombs of the traditional markets. Many small market traders have complained about the rise of these mini-market empires, and indeed any idiot with about US$10,000 to spare can open one. You have to feel a bit sorry for the small traders who are being left out in the cold by the wipe clean surfaces and hyper-efficient supply lines of these new citadels of convenience. There’s more to this issue than just the disempowerment of the small trader by franchise capital though. The mini-market changes the whole psycho-social

If that doesn’t appeal then you can opt to have your bulk shop delivered through apps such as Happy Fresh and Sayurbox. Local shopping behemoths Giant and Hypermart also have their own apps. Naturally, you can't give the tomatoes (either real or virtual) a damn good squeeze through an app, however, such door-to-door, weekly shopping deliveries have become a hugely popular timesaver in the West.

Having originally ponged like septic tanks and resembled bombed out Beirut hospitals, Jakarta’s markets are now rather cleaner, brighter, and more sanitary in general, although the nature of the beast means that they’re still not quite as fragrant as a branch of Ranch Market.

outlook of the community at some unconscious level. Moreover, compared with the fresh produce of a proper market, the nutritional content of the fare on offer is probably sending Indonesia’s type II diabetes rates soaring through the roof. As the bland homogenisation of the global marketplace standardises our desires and aspirations, we increasingly like to shuffle around impersonal, highly predictable

But enough of the cod sociology; how do these various retail palaces stack up against more mundane criteria? 1. Booze availability. The expat supermarket obviously wins here. 2. Attentiveness of Staff. The smiling, jovial, wisecracking, market traders definitely come out on top here. The trainee school leavers down at my mini mart seem to be suffering from a fairly common condition that I’ve named Indonesian-Y-chromosome-serviceindustry-syndrome. Basically, these chaps are about as gormless as it is humanly possible to be without actually being plugged into life support machines. 3. Ambience. We've already discussed this in some detail but, masochist that I am, I don't think you can beat a good nostril singeing trip around the huge hollowed out breeze block of the market, and there’s less chance of bumping into somebody I know. Always a plus. 4. Prices. At least these are fixed down at the supermarket, although I'm not generally taken for a sucker by the market traders; not once I've given their formaldehyde soaked chickens the once over and their juicy ripe mangoes a damned good fondling at any rate.

The Apurva Kempinski Bali Introduces Izakaya by Oku: The Art of the Japanese Atelier

Chocolate is high in antioxidants and can be used as a natural moisturiser, protecting the skin from damage, and soothing irritation. Rich in vitamins A, B1, C, D, and E, plus iron and calcium, chocolate nourishes the skin and replaces lost moisture. It also prevents aging by protecting the skin from harmful UV rays.

BALI The Japanese restaurant strives to present authenticity through a modern reimagining.

The rich and creamy scent of chocolate has the power of transporting us to sweet shops and family kitchens of our carefree childhood. It releases serotonin, the same hormone that is responsible for the feeling of elation when falling in love, thus promoting happy feelings and reducing stress.

Inspired by the award-winning OKU Restaurant at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta, Izakaya by OKU is a modern Japanese restaurant with an atelier concept. The word Izakaya refers to an afterwork hub in Japan, where people gather over a meal. This newly unveiled Japanese restaurant features an open kitchen, allowing guests to observe the preparation of the dishes and the chef ’s craftsmanship at the highest level.

If inhaling the intoxicating aromas of chocolate at the spa leaves you with sugar cravings, chocolate treats paired with sparkling wine served posttreatment will certainly be a welcome and satisfying touch. Chocolate spa treatments start from Rp2 million++ per couple or Rp1.2 million++ per person. Enjoy a special 35 percent saving on your next treatment, only during July. For more information or to make a reservation, please call +62361737773 or email spabali@anantara.com.

The Apurva Kempinski Bali will launch its latest gastronomic venture with the opening of Izakaya by OKU – the new signature Japanese restaurant that adds to the resort’s dining collection on July 1, 2019.

Chef Deni Koswara, who has more than 15 years’ experience in Japanese gastronomy, has curated a creative menu, inspired by traditional Japanese cooking methods and ingredients. Some of Izakaya by OKU’s signature dishes that are not to be missed include Karasumi pasta, OKU Kaarage, OKU aburi salmon roll, truffle gyu don, saikyo cod, and mizu as well as “Okukase” – an enticing five- or seven-course chef ’s degustation menu paired with sakes and signature cocktails. Additionally, an

extensive range of Japanese traditional sake and shochu, as well as creative cocktails, are offered; crafted by the resort’s sake sommelier. Featuring an all-wood structure and earthcoloured tones with subdued lighting, the 60 seat Izakaya by OKU is just the right place to experience the Japanese dining culture in the heart of Nusa Dua. Izakaya by OKU opens from Monday to Sunday, 18:00 – 23:00.
