ndonesia is becoming one of the countries deemed to use the internet mainly on mobile devices. Consequently, many people rely on online platforms to fulfil their daily needs using smartphones. Mobile applications are considered more effective and easier especially when it comes to the issue of food and beverages. With the growth of foodordering applications, people can have many options to sort the food and restaurants they prefer by browsing through restaurant menus, photos, users’ reviews, and ratings. With the touch of their fingertips, people can decide on their next meal to eat. However, with the long list of online restaurant reservation applications, it is important to choose the best apps to provide you with enough information, so here are the Top 5 Foodie Apps in Indonesia you should not miss.
1. ZOMATO Have you used Zomato? Established in New Delhi in 2008, this application is currently used in 10,000 cities across 36 countries, consisting of 1.2 million popular restaurants with 80 million foodies every month. Zomato highlights the importance of communication by providing ten different languages inside the app. This app also has ten million reviews with 18 million bookmarks. Zomato’s team believes that their work not only connects people to food but also supports restaurants to enable a sustainable ecosystem. 2. QRAVED Another foodie app you must try is Qraved. This app is claimed as the first mobile restaurant-booking app, available in Indonesia. The unique thing about this app is that Qraved consists of pictures as well as videos to enhance the details, which pictures might not capture. Qraved mainly has four main sections: Deals, Food Photos, Search, and User. In the Deals section, you can search for Qraved’s discount offers, while the Food Photos section allows you to explore more than 10,000 user-generated food pictures. The Search feature lets you sort restaurants based on various criteria, such as distance and price. Then the User feature lets you input your review about your online activities like bookings and dining experiences. Qraved was projected as one of the top Indonesian startups to reach unicorn status by 2020, according to Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Informatics. One of Qraved’s missions is to make life tasty, and help everybody have a great time with their friends, family, and loved ones. after eating too much deep-fried or spicy food. Before I could say or think of anything, Sylvia already said “yes.” Soon after, I heard somebody on one of National Geographic’s programs saying “Mother Nature.”

I worked on new f lavours and started to produce quark. Sylvia started to sell it online and we got some very positive feedback, especially from those who suffer from gut problems. Then we realised this could be our chance to do something useful and earn a living at the same time. We went through a slow and difficult processes of registering all our products with authorities, yet still managed to stay in one piece after the ISO 22,000 and Halal certification processes. Now, you can find Mother Nature products mostly in Surabaya, Jakarta, and Bali.

This kefir-maker shared with Indonesia Expat about life throughout communism, his journey in Asia and the warm-heartedness he feels when he sees customers getting optimum health benefits from his products.
How was your childhood in Estonia? I was born in 1977 and at that time, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union. As anybody who has had the same experience can tell you, it wasn’t the nicest place to grow up. I remember that shops were so empty of food, that once the new stock arrived from time to time, everybody was standing in line for hours before they could take home a piece of sausage or fresh bread.
Some of the ingredients, for instance, kefir, are somewhat still unknown among Indonesians. What do you think should be done to get more people interested in healthier ingredients? We are currently explaining the benefits of our products to the Indonesian people. When I first came to Indonesia, there were only 2 or 3 different kinds of imported and expensive yogurt in the supermarkets. Now the situation has changed a lot – the shelves are full of local dairy products and people consume them much more than they used to. The trend to consume healthy food and beverages continuously grows, and we will do our best for this to continue. With kefir, we always say we do not sell the flavour, we sell the benefits. We can’t force people to stop drinking flavoured fizzy sugar water, but we can offer them healthier and tasty alternatives. Not much marketing has been done, though we believe that personal experience is the best way to win over clients. Once people try our kefir and see the benefits of it first hand, they have grins on their faces then they come back and tell other people about it.
That being said, I was lucky. I had a best friend who was also my neighbour. Every time we got home from school, we dropped our schoolbags and played. My mom invested most of her salary in books, which I read quite a lot even when she didn’t allow me. I had a torch under my blanket and read all those wonderful books written by A. Dumas, J. F. Cooper, J. Verne and so on. How did you find yourself in Indonesia, specifically in Surabaya? And would you eventually move to Jakarta? In 2002, I applied to PRC’s scholarship to study in Beijing, China. I´ve always been interested in Oriental studies and I got the scholarship, only for it to be cancelled by Beijing when they found out the professor who gave me his recommendation letter was an outspoken anti-communist, and a personal friend of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. After hearing of this, my professor told me that my only chance was to go to Taipei. So I applied for a Taiwanese scholarship the next year, and I got it. I had already moved out of National Taiwan Normal University and obtained my Master’s degree at National University of Politics by 2006. There was a small girl with a very funny haircut in this Dragon Boat team – her name was Syliva, from Indonesia. We got married in 2011 but we decided to move to Indonesia when Sylvia got pregnant, as the pollution and my painful childhood experiences with communism got too much for us. Surabaya was chosen because it’s her second home, after Ruteng in Flores. To be honest, it’s a nice place to live. Jakarta is no doubt an international city with great food options and open-minded people, but it has a traffic problem. Estonia is 50 percent forest and its traditional lifestyle is still very strong. How did you adjust to living in Indonesia? There’s an old Estonian saying: “If you can see your neighbour’s house, you live too close to each other.” I grew up in a small town with only 3,000 people, so adjusting to life in Indonesia hasn’t been easy or successful, to be honest. I still find it too noisy and too crowded from time to time, especially in big cities. Every time I visit Estonia, I go to
a very special place and listen to the silence while enjoying the breathtaking, calming view. Indonesia has places like this. I love the mountains and the sea, so I try to escape from the cities and find refuge in nature, as often as possible. I haven’t been to many places but I hope to do some trekking in the wild forests of Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Borneo, then dive in Papua. What do you dislike about Indonesia and can you think of a solution to overcome that? There are not many things one doesn’t like about Indonesia but if you ask me like this, then it has to be the general traffic and infrastructure. In Surabaya’s case, we need a working public transport system. There’s also the option to build second and even third level roads where the traffic is the worst. If a genie could grant you three wishes, what would they be? I would ask the genie to conjure up another ten or 20 genies, each one with three wishes for me. One can’t have too many genies at their home – you never know when you are going to need a little bit of magic.

In reality, you have a healthy food, beverages, and all-natural products business called Mother Nature, established in Surabaya, in 2015. How did this come about? When I went to Estonia in 2007 for the first time with Sylvia, there were not so many foods or beverages that she liked there, except for kefir. Our son had a Parade of Nations at his school back in 2015; all the parents were encouraged to bring some food or beverage from their countries. We decided to bring some kefir. Some friends from Northern Europe asked me if it was for sale because it tasted just like home. Coping with stomachaches would get difficult for them, especially
You mentioned with Mother Nature, expats and Indonesians can get a healthier alternative to traditional food and beverages through the brand's slogan, “For Healthier Indonesia!” Why is society's health a concern for you? All of Mother Nature’s products have no preservatives, no artificial colors or artificial flavors. Our products are also refined sugarfree since we only use wild forest honey from Sumatra so it’s 100 percent natural. It would be easy and cheaper to come up with something full of preservatives, but that defeats our purpose. Our vision is to only produce products made of all-natural ingredients; nonetheless, it gave us our mission to help people. Kefir helps to relieve the symptoms of allergy and asthma, increases breast milk production and is very good for pregnant mothers. If you weren't handling Mother Nature, what would you like to do in life? I think I would have either been a not very good politician, or above-average diving instructor, or I most likely would be a writer, since I’m very passionate about writing. Lastly, what is one fun fact everybody should know about you? Well, my wife just told me to say that my nose holes are as big as her thumbs – she thinks it’s very funny.

Indonesian Food Lovers Congregate at Djakarta Bali in Paris BY KUNANG HELMI

in Hanaf i, the director of Restaurant Djakarta Bali in Paris, was born on November 19, 1964, in Cuba to the Indonesian Ambassador A.M. Hanafi, from Bengkulu, Sumatra and his Javanese spouse. But fate prevented them from returning home to Indonesia until much later. The former Indonesian diplomat, wife, and family finally moved to Paris after Hanafi Sr. lost his job due to a political upheaval in Indonesia. Here, they decided to create an Indonesian restaurant as a way of presenting excellent Indonesian home cooking to the capital of fine cuisine. They also wanted to introduce Indonesian culture to France, as their professional experience as former diplomats would serve them well. After much searching, and by a surprising stroke of luck – as Nin Hanafi would later describe it – his mother discovered the premises at 9 Rue Vauvilliers in the first district of the French capital, an ideal location on the Right Bank. The construction of the new commercial centre of Les Halles was completed in 1979, ensuring potential clients a novel, exotic type of cuisine in central Paris, easily accessible by public transport.
When Nin took over the family business after studying business administration plus having experience in the cosmetics and automobile industries, he was able to work out a real feasibility study where some changes from the original concept were made.

Sophistication is the key word dominating the present gastronomic approach; a balanced palate of flavours can be discovered among the different menu tasting possibilities, served with delicious ginger tea, any chosen Indonesian coffee or other beverages. Violetta Suganda supervises the culinary aspect of the enterprise. She introduces varied new recipes and ideas, besides taking care of public relations for the Indonesian market. Violetta was the general manager of several firms in the hotel restaurant industry in Indonesia and is still involved in managing catering companies there. Nin laughed, “Luckily for us, she agreed to meet the challenge of presenting fine Indonesian cuisine to France and joined the team in 2005.” Violetta largely participates in presenting culinary events to international schools, embassies and important business societies in France.
Although the building was almost empty at the time, the restaurant Djakarta Bali was finally opened after the necessary refurbishments, including kitchen and other facilities, were completed in 1984. This restaurant features Batik and Wayang Kulit figures, with Balinese ceremonial umbrellas and flags to decorate the facade, making the location visible. A large gilded Buddha statue from Central Java dominates the main dining area in the front of the premises. Furthermore, a second but less formal dining area is found two steps higher and leads to a winter garden.
Besides running the business side of Djakarta Bali, Nin explained, “I also founded the Indonesian Diaspora Network, whose members are Indonesians living in France, those who love Indonesia, former French expats who used to work or live in Indonesia and so forth. We organise cultural events to present Indonesia to the French public; conferences, film projections, introduction of Indonesian products, and we work together with the Indonesian Embassy here in France.”
Bali, included in the restaurant’s name, refers to the fabled island of the Indonesian archipelago, whereas Djakarta (written in the old way) refers to the capital where many different people of the Indonesian Republic gather to live and work, introducing multiple cultural exchanges. Presentations of mainly Balinese traditional dances are also showcased due to their dynamic nature on Friday evenings. Traditional dishes and genuine family recipes were introduced by Ibu Hanafi to ensure authentic tastes and presentations. Many spices like ginger, lemon balm and galangal are available in Paris, whereas other ingredients such as kemiri nuts, Curcuma leaves, or kencur roots have to be ordered from Indonesia or Holland.
However, Nin wished to keep certain aspects of the restaurant intact, such as an interior ref lecting an elegant Indonesian home, together with the best of Indonesian hospitality. The quality of the service is enhanced by warm Indonesian smiles from the personnel. The décor is dominated by Javanese teak furniture and walls covered by volcanic stone – similar to those of many temples in Java. Unusual serving dishes, plates and cutlery also enhance the visual presentation.

Recently, for example, they presented Maestro Indonesian chef William Wongso in an event celebrating the excellence of Indonesian Heritage in fine cuisine. The internationally renowned chef, who has published countless cookbooks, personally prepared his famous Rendang Wagyu for invited guests on the opening night. The slow-cooked tender Kobe beef in Indonesian style was and is continuing to be a huge success. Those interested in tasting this, together with savoury side-dishes, should book a table in the evenings to taste the delicious f lavour of the Sumatran recipe à la Wongso. It has become a permanent fixture of the romantic, fine dining evening experience.
About three years ago, the Indonesian Tourism Ministry began to take an active interest in the restaurant to help promote Indonesia abroad and attract European visitors. Gastronomy has become at least the fourth priority of the government as part of the Wonderful Indonesia program. Djakarta Bali now plays a pivotal role in the presentation of Indonesia abroad together with other restaurants of the global Indonesian Diaspora. Fine dining is only part of the fixed program, besides the daily, weekly and midday menu which comes at about EUR20–25 (Rp312,278–390,347) without drinks. The restaurant also accepts restaurant tickets provided by French employers at lunch-time during the week. Violetta and Nin feature brunch on Sundays where the choice is between Nasi Goreng Special and Mie Goreng Special alongside fresh juices and coffee or tea, topped off by Indonesian sweet desserts. Prices vary according to what is consumed during the leisurely brunch served between noon until the last order at 2pm. In the evenings, the complete Rijstafel Bali is the most expensive Rijstafel menu that’s perfect for those who want to splurge, including all the side dishes and starters with no drinks for EUR55 (Rp858,764), but could include the Djakarta Bali special cocktail for EUR8 (Rp124,911) or other drinks. À la carte options are also available. The two partners have begun a catering service, and besides the take-away meals already available they are discussing whether they should introduce an afternoon tea service à la Indonesia between midday and evening on weekends. Djakarta Bali will be included in the prestigious Pudlowski Guide 2020. Djakarta Bali VIP guest list already contains such luminaries as Catherine Deneuve, Grace Jones, Christine Lagarde, Surabaya’s Mayor Ibu Risma, singer Anggun, Jean-Charles Castelbajac, famous Indonesian actress Christine Hakim, actor Lambert Wilson, OBIN Indonesian batik designer, painter Kartika Affandi and many others.

CEO AND PRESIDENT DIRECTOR OF PT. SEWU SEGAR PRIMATAMA (Re.juve)
Richard Anthony juice requires an extractor or a blender; a machine that’ll slice fruits and vegetables a thousand times a minute, but this produces heat which destroys most of the vitamins, antioxidants, and nutrients. Also, very high rates of oxidation happens as the extractor or blender rotates a thousand times, which is bad for the quality of fresh produce. By using a blender or extractor, none of us will get the necessary goodness, taste and nutrition from the fruits and vegetables. This isn’t aligning well with our mission to provide the freshest and purest ingredients for the public. After some more research, it turns out that a cold-pressed juice is categorised as healthy, as long as it’s pure and natural (made from only fresh fruits and vegetables without additional water, sugar and preservatives). Cold pressing is a technology where it crunches slowly and doesn’t produce heat, which means there will be no oxidation. As a result, all nutrients, vitamins and even the freshness of the ingredients remain, while also having a longer shelf-life. How do you process a cold-pressed juice? Re.juve’s juice production is done in a sealed room to minimise air contamination. The room is also chilled at an average 10 degrees Celcius. By doing this, bacteria won’t grow and the freshness of the products remains. Starting from selecting ingredients, we always look at the quality. No matter what the circumstance is, checking the quality is important. Afterwards, we wash the ingredients with drinkable water that’s filtered and sterilised by UV, and then it goes into the bubble wash stage that uses chlorinated drinkable water to wash skin deep for about two to three minutes to kill the bacteria. The next stage is rinsing. After rinsing three times using drinkable and Reverse Osmosis (RO) water, we peel and weigh and then move onto the cold-pressed process. In this process, we use a hydraulic and triturating cold-pressed juicers that pushes the air out – not like a blender or extractor. Now it’s time to pour in the juice and finally seal the bottles.

CEO and President Director of PT. Sewu Segar Primatama (Re.juve), Richard Anthony sat down with Indonesia Expat to discuss the importance of health and the glorious benefits of coldpressed juices. What was the inspiration and aim to start Re.juve? I used to live in Singapore and also travelled a lot. My weight fluctuated and ballooned, compared to now. I started adopting a sustainable healthier lifestyle as soon as I realised the importance of my health and managed to reduce my weight from 84 kg to 71 kg. Then, I moved back to Indonesia and frankly it was very difficult for me to find delicious and healthy food and drinks at the time.
Six years after my return home in 2007, I was given the challenge to start a company based on agriculture or fresh produce under PT. Sewu Segar Primatama. Studies were conducted, but we couldn’t immediately decide on the product. Starting with a bigger mission is vital. For Re.juve, its mission is to build something that can help customers live a sustainable healthy lifestyle to the fullest, or what we like to call a happier life. Therefore this product we were creating has to be good and beneficial for everyone, revolving around three main factors: delicious, healthy and honest. Why did you choose cold-pressed juices as the product of Re.juve? Juices can be consumed at any time of the day, and anywhere you are, so it can become part of our lifestyles. People drink juices because they want to get all of the vitamins, antioxidants and nutrients from the fresh fruits and vegetables. Conventionally making
Since late 2018, Re.juve had started using a High Pressure technology (HPP) to increase product safety level further which automatically translated into a longer shelflife. With HPP, we place a sealed bottle into this machine’s chamber filled with chilled water, measured in about five degrees Celsius. The machine starts pumping the water until the pressure shows a maximum of 6,000 bars. Mind you, this is very high water pressure. We cannot use pasteurised technology for fresh juices or other raw product because the heat will destroy the taste and most of the nutritions. HPP technology gives consumers safety similiar to pasteurized food and drinks, while maintaining the freshness, taste and rich flavours from fresh fruits and vegetables as well as their nutrition benefits. As a matter of fact, Re.juve is the first ASEAN country to use HPP in an integrated coldpressed juice production facility. Though

HPP’s operational and investment costs are more expensive than pasteurisation, Re.juve believes in giving the best of the best, delicious selections for everyone to indulge without any hygienic and health-related concerns. What are the differences between Re.juve’s cold-pressed juices and any other juices out there? All of Re.juve’s juices are 100 percent coldpressed, fresh, pure and natural. We will never add water, sugar, artificial sweetener and preservatives or anything. All of the ingredients are chosen carefully based on the freshness. There’s also an organic line of products! Have you noticed that there isn’t any strawberry juice? Well, it’s not like we never tried to create one; it’s just that we haven’t found the right mixture to make it tasty without adding any sugar or other ingredients, which will violate our commitment to only produce cold-pressed juices that are 100 percent fresh, pure and natural. So, for now, we have strawberries inside Re.juve’s infused water. Constantly finding innovative ways to grow that enable our customers to make wiser decisions is always discussed among the Re.juve team. Seen on Re.juve's Instagram account, posting educational updates to the masses is often done. Is this a part of Re.juve's role in promoting a healthier lifestyle? Education is key. Re.juve is flexible enough to market its products by suitable ways that directly get attention from specific age groups for instance. If millennials lean on Instagram, Re.juve is there. Since the beginning, Re.juve never really preferred using top of the line advertisements because ads have less information displayed to the public. Instead, we would rather have talk shows and seminars where the team hands out the products for everyone to try out and see proof of the facts we discussed. These interactions also support Re.juve’s honest character to never hide anything from the public. Anyway, mouth to mouth is a powerful advertisement. Slowly but surely, the brand became stronger accompanied by trust and even connection with the customers.

I consider myself an easy-going person, yet some people think otherwise. My new personal assistant thinks I’m a funny person, although I tend to be reserved with my emotions. Nonetheless, I always look at the process, not just the results. I also like to travel as well as enjoying nice and delicious food and drinks.

Will there be other products besides juices, smoothies, and snacks anytime soon? Re.juve is not a juice company, it’s a lifestyle. You can find a selection of food and beverages at our stores. We have some salads coming in from third parties at our stores. Looking back at our principles, we are always open to provide meals in the future but it depends on the product, the market and customer needs. Sometimes there’s a dish that’s healthy but it isn’t considered delicious, and that detracts from Re.juve’s mission. In short, we will only provide customers with F&B that are delicious, healthy and honest. I get the impression that you are passionate about health. Are you? I have a passion for a healthier sustainable lifestyle. Sometimes I like to ask my team, do you love yourself? If you do, then why do you constantly feed yourself with non-healthy food/drinks? You only have one body. The more unhealthy food/drinks you consume, the less chance you will get to enjoy life for a longer, fuller time. I sincerely don’t believe in diets though. I’ll eat everything, especially when I go travelling, as long as it is the best available version of a particular dish. We can do this as long as we have been kind to our body by consuming delicious and healthy foods and drinks in our daily life. What about your favourite Re.juve drink and snack? To be honest, I like a lot of Re.juve’s drinks. It depends on the occasion because Re.juve can fit regardless of our lifestyles. I like the Asian Green, u.Glow, Super Green, Passion fruit and Tropic Golden juices. After a workout, I like to have the Chocolate High Smoothies since they’re packed with 30g protein and 10g fibre from banana, oatmeal, natural peanut butter, whey chocolate protein and fresh milk or almond milk. The biggest challenge is not being able to chew anything; as it was all in liquid form. When we launched the detoxifying three-day juice fast, I tried it and lost 1 kg. To be clear, we never promote any detox programs as a way to lose weight. Detox is self-cleansing and good to give your body and its organs a time to take it easy digesting the healthy and non-healthy foods and drinks we consume daily. These organs already detox on their own but physical environmental factors hinder the cleansing
process. Again, Re.juve wants to help people in an honest way. We never say our juices detox your body, but our juices can aid and boost up the conditions of your organs so they can detox properly. Moving onto you, please describe your background till you eventually became CEO & President Director of PT Sewu Segar Primatama. I was born and raised in Jakarta. I did all of my education in Indonesia, including my Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering, although that wasn’t my first choice. I also did my MBA from the University of Melbourne. I spent most of my career in IT until late 2013; nine years in Indofood, 14 months in Guinness Indonesia, and another 9.5 years in Singapore. In 2007, I came back to Indonesia where I joined the Sewu Group as Group CIO until 2013, when I made a very far jump in 2014 to start and handle Re.juve. When I made that career switch, it was a huge challenge. I didn’t have any food and beverage (F&B) retail experience, though I did have senior management experiences for many years. I came into a silver lining of having a bigger opportunity to expand personally and professionally. During my IT days, I was happy to be able to contribute in many ways and got recognised as one of the best CIOs in ASEAN by IDG. Both industries made me happy, but here I get to do and contribute much more because I’m surrounded by a wonderful team that I get to see grow and shine. With several specialties in business management, analytical skills, etc under your belt, how have these skills influenced your work in Re.juve? In IT, I often used to analyse in detail since I’m a very logical person. I also negotiated
What are your hobbies? I like to play badminton and work out in the gym. I’m quite a competitive person. Usually, I play doubles in badminton against competitive people because that’s more enjoyable and allows me to improve my skills. Frankly, I workout at the gym or running just to enhance my stamina to play better badminton (laughs). I also like to watch movies at home or at the theatres. I’d go for action, comedy and any type of movie that has hidden life values to motivate me. I kind of stray away from drama because it’s rather boring. Lastly, what is your personal and corporate ten years plan? Ten years is a long time. Hopefully, I can still lead and continue to grow Re.juve because I told the team, Re.juve is growing well but we aren’t close to achieving our vision and mission yet. Until 2018 we’ve only catered to Jabotabek. There are expansion plans for other cities and regions of Indonesia. That’s why we started using HPP to make Re.juve products shelf life last longer. Re.juve is now also available in Surabaya, Bali, then soon other cities in Java. Probably overseas distribution will be done sometime in the future; once we find the right partner for that. To be able to see Re.juve products literally in every Indonesian household will be amazing. That’s my vision for Re.juve, and help these young talents to achieve their dreams at the same time. By the time I retire, I will prepare someone suitable and capable to continue Re.juve or else, it would be a waste.

A Creative Approach to Uplifting Lives: Bringing the Joy of Reading and Literacy to City Slum Kids Jakarta, a city of more than 20 million people; captivating, enchanting, sometimes perplexing, rose to prosperity during the last commodity boom, evident from the rows of gleaming skyscrapers and towering office buildings dotting the major roads in the city. Look beyond the glistening skyscrapers and right at the foot of these buildings of this spellbinding city, you will see the people of Jakarta going about their daily lives, buying their meals from street food push-carts and makeshift stalls. By taking a stroll further down these paths, you will meander into the small lanes that will lead you to the urban slum dwellings which characterise much of Jakarta.
how to raise funds for these children in a way that leverages their strengths and got the whole school involved. Thus, the Ichthus creative project, “Blessed to be a Blessing,” was born.
This is a city of contrast - despite the many towering offices, one quarter of the residents of Jakarta live in slums, among whom are 1.5 million* children. Gerobak Pintar, the brainchild of a local education entrepreneur, Mrs See Mun Suparno, was set up to help them climb out of the cycle of poverty through education and literacy. With a mission to bring the joy of reading to the little children of the slums, Gerobak Pintar, which literally translates to “Smart-Carts,” found a creative twist to bringing the concept of a mobile library localised to reach into the hearts of these slums. Stocked with books and puppets for storytelling, volunteers regularly read, tell stories, and perform puppet shows for the little children living in the backstreets of Jakarta.
Ichthusians even penned, composed, and recorded a student original song, “Light,” for the album. While the choir children were busy recording, the art teachers rallied the students to come up with art pieces for the CD sleeves so as to tell the story of the movement. Business students and the student council drew up plans for the marketing and distribution of the album to raise funds for the project.
The plight of these slum children has stirred the hearts of another group of children who began a movement which started two years ago. Students studying in Ichthus International School, a Christian based school offering the Cambridge curriculum, took to their hearts the plight of these children and the whole school started a movement to help contribute to the program. Ichthusians decided to contribute via the platform of Gerobak Pintar, and so took to the drawing board to figure out
With a strong culture of creative and performing arts, Ichthusians love to sing. Buildling on their passion, their journey started with the idea to record songs for an album , with proceeds from the album sales being donated to Gerobak Pintar. With both large group and solo performances from campuses in the West and South, the album was ready for production after a year of planning and hard work.
A total of Rp60 million was raised for Gerobak Pintar. The event culminated in a ceremony where Ichthus donated a Gerobak Pintar to the community centre in Kedoya. It was heartwarming to see the smiles of the many children who received gifts and enjoyed the storytelling sessions. This journey doesn’t come to an end; the slum children need continuous support and help from us to raise their literacy levels and lift them out of poverty. Through foundations like Gerobak Pintar, many lives are touched where the joy of learning and reading can be discovered through a simple yet creative idea brought to life by its founder and by the continuous effort and support from volunteers. Is It Wrong To Eat Pussy? Kenneth Yeung examines why consumption of pussycats is unpopular in Indonesia.

ats tend to enjoy a relatively exalted status in Indonesia. Unlike dogs, which are often frowned upon or feared in this Muslim-majority nation, cats are treated with greater respect. So there was understandable public outrage over a recent viral video of a man eating a cat in Jakarta. The cat-eater was identified as Sanca alias Abu Grandong (69), who hails from Rangkasbitung town in Banten province, west of Jakarta. On July 19, he came to Kemayoran Market in Central Jakarta, where he was filmed eating a small grey cat as he strode around a former outdoor food court, while blood splattered onto his white shirt. With blood also smeared over his mouth, he asked that lights be turned off. Grandong’s action was a black magic ritual, aimed at evicting traders from the market. Police confirmed that he was trying to scare traders to stop using electricity at their stalls, as the management of the area no longer permits them to operate there. Local media reports said Grandong was hired as a security guard for the area a few days before the cat-eating incident. Some netizens claimed the cat was alive when he was eating it, although it appeared lifeless after he had chewed through part of its stomach.

WASTE NOT Indonesia is rated as the world’s secondlargest food waster, squandering about 300 kilograms of food per person annually – largely due to a lack of cold storage and transport infrastructure. It’s ironic then, that 31 percent of Indonesian children suffer from stunting due to malnutrition.
Grandong surrendered to Central Jakarta Police on August 1 and was charged with animal cruelty, which carries a maximum penalty of nine months’ imprisonment. He was accompanied by a relative, Deden, who said Grandong is a practitioner of black magic and often behaves strangely. He is also known for eating live centipedes.
Many low-income Indonesians struggle to afford meat, yet cat meat is generally not considered suitable for the cooking pot (the exception is predominantly Christian North Sulawesi province, where cat and dog meats are consumed). The only meat forbidden by the al-Quran is pork (and carrion – animals that die by themselves), but Muslim scholars assert that cat meat is also haram because Muhammad is said to have banned the consumption of all fanged terrestrial beasts of prey.
Police did not detain Grandong but instead took him to Kramat Jati Police Hospital for an intended psychiatric examination. However, officers later said they were unable to carry out the mental health test because the suspect was sick, as he had been fasting for five days.
In September, two impoverished brothers in Lampung province in southern Sumatra unwittingly gained media attention after they cooked and ate a cat that had been hit and killed by a car. Wagimin (35) and Suyatno (30) work as scavengers in Kelapa Tujuh village and are rarely able to afford meat.
Grandong told police he thought he had been eating a rabbit. Police said he had used his fingernail to cut open the cat’s stomach when it was still alive.
Wagimin said he is not accustomed to eating cats, but was hungry on the day he found the dead cat. “I just wanted to eat meat. I saw a dead cat on the side of the road. I took it home
and I cooked it for me to eat with my brother,” he explained. A concerned community group visited the brothers, who live in a simple house without furniture, and donated some food to them. If you run over a cat in Indonesia, it’s considered bad form to leave the carcass on the road. Not because you should be eating it, but because of a superstition that you will suffer bad luck if you fail to pick it up and give it a burial. This belief apparently stems from an ancient Islamic story of a woman who went to hell because she starved a cat. MEATBALL RUMOURS In Berau in East Kalimantan, rumours arose in 2016 that vendors of fried pentol (a chewy ball made from tapioca flour and other ingredients) were adding cat meat to their products. The hoax spread on social media and caused vendors to suffer a downturn in sales. Local police and health officials responded by eating pentol at roadside stalls in an effort to convince the public there was no cat meat in the balls. They also handed out free pentol to students. The District Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Office said that every year, there are rumours of forbidden meat, such as pork and rat, being used in meatballs. Samples of pentol and samples from meat suppliers were sent to a lab for testing and none showed any traces of cat meat. In 2018, TRIBUNnews.com reported that a pentol vendor had been arrested in Banjarbaru city, South Kalimantan province, for using cat meat. The report quoted a retired policeman as confirming the arrest. Police and the government later said the report was false and no one had been arrested for selling cat meat. Also in 2018, a meatball vendor in Morowali in Central Sulawesi complained to police after social media posts accused him of using cat meat and human sperm in his products. HEALTH HAZARDS After the video of Abu Grandong went viral, doctors warned that eating raw cat meat poses numerous health risks. Humans can contract rabies if they eat the uncooked organs of an animal infected with the viral disease. Raw cat meat, especially if unrefrigerated, can also contain harmful bacteria and other pathogens. Handling cat carcasses can lead to the spread of toxoplasmosis – a parasite-borne infection that can be fatal to humans with weak immune systems or cause deformities in infants. If you feel compelled to consume feline flesh (perhaps only as a famine food), you should ensure it is hygienically handled and stored, and well cooked. At least it doesn’t come with the instant plastic waste and poor nutrition of more socially acceptable Indonesian snack foods.

The last spot I can recommend in Indonesia for an immersive evening is in Ubud. Requiring a reservation a few weeks ahead, Locavore is advertised as a 7 or 9-course set, but you always get a few fun extras between courses. There is no projection mapping here, but a seat at the kitchen bar will yield an immersive experience as you watch the team create masterpieces using locally sourced, sustainable ingredients. The kitchen team is a well-oiled machine and I find myself thoroughly entertained and enamored by them each time I go. You do get to play a bit as well; for this dish, you must eat using a stick dipped in honey to get the goods out of the bamboo shoot, just like Indonesia’s beloved orangutans do in the wild. Recent advancements in entertainment technology and culinary art have opened opportunities for truly unique dining experiences that far surpass our expectations for dinner and a show. Foodie culture is bigger than ever and chefs worldwide are striving to perfect their art, constantly pushing the envelope, and further, becoming producers of their multisensory productions, controlling various aspects of the atmosphere in ways many cannot yet imagine. Immersive dining experiences range in definition and quality. Let’s start with the best: Ultraviolet in Shanghai sets a gold standard for immersive dining. With only ten seats a night available, it’s reserved many months in advance. Chef Paul Pairet and his team produce a meal with a changing atmosphere for every course. The perfectly-executed 20 courses are bolstered by a setting that completely transports the diner into another land using 360-degree projection screens around the dining room and 3D projection mapping on the table. Music, sound effects, tastes, textures, visuals, scents, and temperatures are all parts of the orchestra that are manipulated to create the symphony. Think of eating Fish & Chips in the rain in London, or cracking fresh lobster while seeing the waves crash against the rocks and feeling the breeze in your hair. In 2018, the restaurant earned three Michelin stars and made it in Time Magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places” list. To gain perspective on industry trends, I spoke with Paul Washburn, Head of
Development at Super 78 Studios in Los Angeles, California where he designs and produces immersive experiences. Washburn pointed out that entertainment powerhouses, Disney and Universal, have successfully implemented immersive dining venues in Star Wars and Harry Potter attractions, allowing guests to eat and drink in places familiar from the films. At their best, these experiences add richness to the world and as guests feel more connected to the storylines, they have a reason to keep coming back. Washburn said, “A story is most important when crafting an immersive experience where every sight, sound, scent, and taste is carefully choreographed. The added challenge of making a story delicious involves coordination across many disciplines and often the desired experience is truly like nothing that has even been done before. This is an exciting time for diners as more experiences are popping up all over the globe in theme parks, fine dining venues, and even cruise ships.” If you aren’t straying far from Jakarta any time soon and want dinner with a fun show, Le Petit Chef may be an option. It has made its first Jakarta experience in October 2019 as a pop-up dining attraction in C’s, Grand Hyatt Jakarta. This dining experience is a whimsical, light-hearted entertainment for all ages. The company that produces
this experience, Skullmapping, utilizes 3D projection mapping technology to create an entertaining scene on the table in front of you. Imagine the world’s smallest chef, measuring at 58mm, projected onto your plate in 3D, travelling through various regions of the world, gathering ingredients to cook up your meal. This experience is more about the show and less about the food, but indeed a cute experience worth checking out.
Pricing is not out of this world. It was more affordable than many high-end and omakase restaurants in Jakarta. The precise location is emailed just hours before the event and there is an attendant at the door to ID and guide you to the best dinner party a foodie could imagine. You and 20 others gather around one table. The kitchen is right there in the cozy living room, so you can see the expert chef and team preparing each course as a delicate piece of art. The chef explains every course casually to you, with genuine humility and not a hint of arrogance – so refreshing. You feel like you are in the home of the chef, experiencing a very special evening. No special effects here, just a unique new place and strangers, all sharing a love for food. The element of secrecy lends nicely to the evening because you know others in the room are as passionate about the art of culinary creation as you are. It’s not about being on display at a fancy restaurant, it’s just about the food. I spent nearly three hours there, made new friends, and months later, I am still drooling over the thought of the crispy deep-fried quail served atop a cream sauce with fresh dill oil.
Also in Jakarta, where the food itself is more of the show, is Indonesia’s first molecular gastronomy restaurant, Namaaz. Here you will enjoy Indonesian cuisine prepared in playful ways. Self-taught chef, Andrian Ishak revamped fine-dining to “fun-dining,” using liquid nitrogen, tableside smoke, and molecular gastronomy techniques such as jellification.
Immersive dining is embodied in different forms. Now chefs are taking on a broader role in the production, getting more creative with the entire experience, altering aspects of the environment to elevate guests to another level. This bule is in a dilemma. I hate motorbikes. But I think I need to get one. The swarms of motorbikes that stream through Jakarta’s streets, forming and reforming like schools of fish, fascinate me. Until recently it did not even occur to me that I should join them. Bikes are clearly unsafe for a large, clumsy bule, who did not grow up absorbing the instinctive formations of Jakartan traffic from birth. But then I realised that I am constantly on the roads, dicing with death, motorbikes, cars, buses, and trucks anyway. To quote completely unreliable statistics, every time I walk a step outside I compete with at least ten million motorcycles, six million cars, 600,000 trucks, and 360,000 buses. The human body, essentially a fragile bag of blood, flesh, and bone, doesn’t stand up well in this competitive environment. Metal travelling at speed wins every time. In a city where only 6 percent of roads have footpaths, the competition between metal and flesh is inevitable and intense. I am competing for space with machines that will kill me if I put a foot wrong – or even if I don’t. Not only am I inherently fragile, but I am also travelling at 4 km per hour. The metal death machines are going a lot quicker – except when they aren’t moving at all. Oddly, the average traffic speed in Jakarta at peak hours has been calculated at five km per hour. Think about that. The average traffic speed at peak hours is the same as someone walking. A little bit quicker than a buffalo. Of course, those inside or on top of the metal death machines will argue they are safer, more comfortable and ultimately quicker than a pedestrian. And they’d be right. That’s why Jakartans use a motorbike or a car for any journey longer than 200 metres! Even with taxis, I am faced with a dilemma. For a start, I’ve found that drivers get upset when I flop into one of their air-conditioned cocoons at the top of a queue of vehicles and ask them to take me 200 metres. No-one is happy about trips that don’t cover at least a couple of kilometres. If I want to travel somewhere between 10m and 2km, I have little choice but to risk my life, walking on the road. If my destination is one km away, it will take me 10 minutes to walk there. And I’ll risk my life. Depending on how long it takes to find a ride and the traffic, the same distance could take me 30 minutes or more by car. I’ll be there in five minutes on my bike. Most importantly, when I get my Scoopy I’ll be competing on equal terms – metal against metal. I may only average my normal walking speed, but at any given moment, I’ll be travelling at the same speed as all the other death machines around me. Wish me luck.

BINUS School Simprug Shows Commitment attending SDG Annual Conference In early October, BINUS School Simprug was the only Indonesian school that attended the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Annual Conference 2019. With the theme of “Sustainable Life for Our Ocean,” this event was held by BAPPENAS and opened by former Vice President Jusuf Kalla. The SDGs are a set of goals formed by the United Nations in 2015, to work towards a variety of global issues, from hunger and poverty to peace and sustainability by the year 2030. Achieving these goals would solve the myriad of pressing global issues that humanity faces today, improving the livelihoods of society and preventing issues from arising in the future. At the SDGs opening gala, there were as many as 30 sixth-graders from BINUS School Simprug. They showcased musical performances by singing “Love Song to the Earth” and “Meraih Bintang” while they also played traditional musical instruments such as angklung, xylophone and bass o’clock, combined with modern musical instruments such as keyboards, violin, pianica, and drums. The event continued with two sixth-graders presenting “Life Below Water” where the theme was taken from the PYP Exhibition that they did when back in fifth grade. A presentation about SDGs as a part of the curriculum and culture in BINUS School Simprug was done by Service in Action Coordinator and MYP Individuals & Societies Subject Head, Ms. Angie Kilbane. “If we are teaching the students about the SDGs, why they are important for our shared future, and how we can all take action toward them, then we as a school need to lead by example and work toward the goals through our policies and practices.”
