MARKETING ADVISER

Dear Readers,

Bali Island School Offers Continuity with the IB Continuum T ravelling to different countries for your career can be complex and challenging at the same time.

Mike, what’s next for you and BIS? Many things are coming, however, the most important issues to formulate are our new strategic plans for the next five years.

What sets BIS’s education system apart from the rest? Apart from the IB curriculum, we are the only IB school in Bali and being a continuum school gives us continuity in the learning process. By continuity, what I mean is in IB, we have something known as approaches to teaching and learning that begins in preschool and continues all the way to grade 12. When students join us, they can pass from one IB programme to the next, seamlessly. The teaching and the learning take a similar form which you won’t get in a non-IB continuum school, so what sets BIS aside from the rest is that we are an IB continuum school that can offer continuity and seamless transition.

That’s the biggest thing we have going on this year, that would be an ongoing process where many members of the community will be involved to formulate our strategic plan that should be finalised by approximately April or May. This will take us forward for the next five years.

What made you choose BIS as your next career move? BIS has such amazing potential, really amazing potential. The current student numbers are 280 and we have the capacity for 380 so I'd like to see the school growing. We are working on a process of embarking on new strategic plans that allow me and many community members to work towards for the next five years. The two biggest factors in my decision were that this is an IB school and that we are at a very exciting stage in terms of our strategic goals.

Mike Miller, Head of Bali Island School (BIS), talks about his background, his vision for the school, and his experience behind his success in the education world with Indonesia Expat. Hi, Mike! We’d like to know more about you. My name is Mike Miller, I’m originally from Scotland, UK, and I’ve been here since June. I love cycling, and I’ve now begun to cycle again. I used to cycle a lot in Spain but after I moved to China and Vietnam, I didn’t do much cycling so now I’ve managed to return to the bike. I also love motorbiking and travelling! You’re currently residing in Bali, share with us your thoughts on expat life on the island and the reason behind your move. Bali is an exceptionally warm and kind environment to live in; the people are fantastic. There’s so much to see here! I think there is a wealth of restaurants and nationalities for an expat to choose from, choice is abundant. Many activities can also be done in terms of exercise, nature, and wildlife so for me, Bali is a very interesting and exciting place to be. The reason behind my move was a professional move, I saw BIS as a perfect career opportunity.

Why are engaging, empowered, globally-minded, and confident learners part of the core values? Our mission is aligned with IB’s mission themselves and the reason we choose to talk about producing globally-minded and confident learners is that IB places a large emphasis on international mindedness. What that basically means is that we want our students to grow up respecting and acknowledging other cultures and other ethnicities; we want them to be listeners, we We want our students to grow up respecting and theweperspectives.otherwantcommunicators,wantthemethnicities;otheracknowledgingculturesandotherwewanttobelisteners,wethemtobeeffectiveandwethemtounderstandpeople’sThat'swhatmeanbyempoweringglobally-minded.

What has been the biggest challenge to getting where you are right now? There are only a limited number of international schools which are IB continuum schools, so the biggest challenge in terms of getting where I am right now as the head of the school is my competition as a leader. Everybody wants to be working in an IB world school and even better if it’s an IB continuum school such as BIS. So, having the right experience and knowledge is crucial in landing the right position.

Briefly explain about Bali Island School. Bali Island School is a small, family, community type of school. It’s an IB continuum school and as you’d see if you took a tour of the campus, we have a villagestyle set up in terms of the buildings. The physical resources we have here create a wonderful family atmosphere. Also, with an IB curriculum school, we offer that continuity of learning that other noncontinuum schools can’t offer. want them to be effective communicators, and we want them to understand other people’s perspectives. That's what we mean by empowering the globally-minded.

How can our readers get in touch with you and Bali Island School? Quite easily! They can come along to the school and receive a school tour if they’re interested in what we offer in terms of teaching and learning and they can see firsthand the wonderful teaching and learning at our campus. If people can’t come to the school, they may contact the school and have telephone conversations or online conversations as well, but our doors and our gates are always open for visitors.

In terms of learners, we want our students to be independent and to be lifelong learners. That is why we choose to have these two aspects in our mission and core values. Being globally-minded and confident learners are two aspects which are fundamental to the IB philosophy. You have years of experience in the education sector. What are the values you would like to apply in this school based on your experience? Very good question! I’ve been involved in international education for over 20 years and many of those years as a leader. In my experience, the most important aspects of leadership in the education sector – or other sectors – is to have integrity, honesty, transparency, and consistency. These are four fundamental values for effective development of not only your school but also your staff and there is an idea that many staff will believe in the leader, not the school. It’s very important as a leader to act with integrity, honesty, and transparency to get the staff to be able to respect and trust what you stand for.

What’s the story behind the change of the new BSJ logo? On 9th March 2019, a meeting between the Council of Trustees, Board of Governors, and the Board of Executives regarding the school and its future was held. The curriculum was changing into a more vertically articulated model thus, skills would be built year on year inside and outside the classroom. On 13th March 2020, BSJ’s campus was closed for COVID-19. We had to ensure a new logo would be created by August 2022 to signify a refresh as the campus would be running. The top of the “J” has different colours. Primary school is identified with one colour, secondary school with another, and so forth. This change is a simple way to understand the school. The new logo is sharp and clean, giving BSJ a certain zest, especially to the students. What can we expect from the “new” BSJ? The academic model is improving, intertwining with the refurbishments of facilities. Lots of planning and preparation is taking place. BSJ is anticipating getting in the rhythm, working with holistic education in full force. BSJ’s mission is “To inspire excellence in education and in life”. Tell us more about this and what kind of programmes and initiatives you feel reflect the mission best. The overarching idea is to have something short and simple that people could relate to. Possessing excellence in what you do is an inspiration, massively important to how we learn and teach. Underneath it is vision and values. Our vision, head-heart self-system, is where you get into the whole importance of Mandalawellbeing.is a circle and is how you are interdependent; your head and heart in your system have to work in one, in the right place. If this happens, the system will work better. Our partnership with MIT called the sense of assistance awareness is derived from that. Students and children in 2022 require more understanding to learn better because positive psychology and systems thinking have been advancing in the last 15 years. If the students are well and feel that they’re in a good place, they’ll be able to learn better. That creates what we call a generative social field.

“ Moving forward, blending tradition with modernity in providing worldclass education,” stated David Butcher, the Head of School of the British School Jakarta (BSJ), when Indonesia Expat chatted about BSJ’s refresh amongst the enlivened ambience filled with students immersing in various activities. Hi, David! We’d like to know more about you. My name is David Butcher, a Brit who arrived in Indonesia in August 2018. This is my fifth year of being the Head of School of BSJ. I love sports; I reached the highest levels of cricket where I played for England’s universities and semi-professionally. A fun fact is that I’m on Wikipedia – I’ve checked and it’s correct.

Learning goes beyond the classroom; real-world experiences and unique opportunities are given to every student in their formative years to support them to thrive and succeed in the future.

The 44-acre campus aims to enrich student’s academic life. What are the school’s specialities that students can benefit from? There are plenty! One of them is BSJ’s partnership with Manchester City to give something unique to students coming back to campus. The idea is for boys and girls to learn football. Every child in the school has the opportunity to do football the Manchester City way in their lessons. All our football programmes and extracurricular activities are through Manchester City. Moreover, creating our own football school accessible to the wider public as part of our social responsibility to Indonesia. We’ve partnered with one of the biggest football clubs in the world – Indonesia is nuts about football! Every child is different at each stage of their development and therefore has different needs. Explain BSJ’s efforts to recognise and meet these needs. Humans aren’t programmes nor computers. Technology is a massive part of life but everybody matures and learns at their own speed and level. How will that learning journey be for every child? To allow them to have inclusion in their way and ability to help themselves and in that journey. BSJ makes sure learning is appropriate with individual attention. There are support programmes with specialists for individual educational needs and so forth.

Share with us your thoughts on expat life in Jakarta and the reason behind your move. I left the UK in 1994 so I’ve been outside home longer than I lived there. Expat life in Jakarta, through my lens, is unique. Every country I’ve lived in had special traits that you take away. You’ve got to make sure that you get the rhythm and the understanding of the country and not feel entitled to being an expat. Certainly, coming here, the warmth and kindness of the Indonesian people will forever resonate with me. In my world of international education, I’m well aware of BSJ’s values, which coincide with mine. I was in Den Haag for six years beforehand, looking for a new opportunity. Asia never became a base yet seemed highly compatible. It was a very competitive process that I was fortunate to succeed in. What does being an educator mean to you? I became one in 1992; 15 years of being a Head of School. I was 38 when I had my initial Head of School role. Being an educator isn’t a calling. I started my training in the late ‘80s which felt quite natural. Being a sportsman and getting close to securing professional contracts, my parents asked about my backup plan in case sports didn’t succeed. “I’ll become a teacher,” I told them.

Teaching makes a difference. It’s probably a profession deserving more recognition for what we do in terms of the world and particularly ancestry. The collectivism of the community within education is unfortunately bypassed. Being an educator is how you make an impression and how you try to make people learn; exuding warmth, kindness, and appreciation. Your career in international education includes Greece, Brazil, Jordan, Portugal, The Netherlands, and now Indonesia. Describe your journey in three words. Exciting, evolutionary, and rewarding. Briefly tell us about British School Jakarta. BSJ was structured as a Yayasan in Indonesia with the brief of providing a world-class education for students. What we say is what we do. BSJ has a very honest reputation because the educational provision provided is the reality of the Theschool.learning, teaching, facilities, and opportunities offered are assured to have every alumni grasp a very special outlook on life. BSJ accepts and is very proud of the traditional British education but then transforms it for the location of Indonesia to better understand our identity. Learning goes beyond the classroom; real-world experiences and unique opportunities are given to every student in their formative years to support them to thrive and succeed in the future.

If you were a student at BSJ, what would you be most excited about? Walking to school in the morning, seeing an early morning football practice. Maybe students are playing volleyball or rock climbing, too. Tennis balls hit on the court, swimmers with their music in the pool. After school, students go to the theatre or dance studios. BSJ had just become a BSJ Rock School Vocational Qualification –as an affiliation with a British company. The opportunities and choices are at the students’ disposal. David, what’s next for you and BSJ? I’d like to lose four kilos after a very good summer in Europe. As for BSJ, everything we’ve had before which was brilliant shall evolve to be greater while those that weren’t going smoothly will be kept in the past. This is truly an elevation year which links in with the branding, mission, vision, and values to not just be statements but actions.

Literature Instils Values in Students

Teaching and reading literature are instrumental in making history more vivid, owing to the writers’ creativity and imagination. The two tools serve to energise the storyline which in turn results in more dramatic messages to the readers. Take Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk written by Ahmad Tohari, as an example. While Soeharto’s New Order regime applied strict measures to political detainees alleged to be members of the now banned Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk managed to raise students’ awareness about the suffering of ordinary civilians in the aftermath of Indonesia’s political turmoil in the 1960s.

S tarting the 2022/23 school year, Sinarmas World Academy (SWA) is ready to bring a different vibe into teaching and learning activities for its students— through the BEST Pathways programme which was introduced directly by the school during the orientation session for new students and parents, Friday, August 5, 2022, taking place at the Trini Dewi Theatre, Sinarmas World Academy. This programme has a focus on four academic pathways, namely Business, Engineering, Science & Technology, and Arts.

“Starting from introducing literacy and numbers, exploring outdoor activities, to utilizing advanced technology and using it to create something new, at this stage SWA encourages every child to be involved in all activities while looking for things that become their interests and talents,” said Deddy.

No need to worry, because SWA also provides counselors who specifically provide support for each student to choose subjects, extracurriculars, to certifications outside of school that match their talents and interests. Equal support will be provided for students whopreviously studied at SWA, as well as students who have recently transferred from another school to SWA.

“Combining the academic database of students and graduates, as well as the world’s developments every year, the school will also continue to learn and grow to be able to provide the most relevant support for today, and even anticipate the needs of students in the future,” concluded Deddy.

Deddy gave an example, that at an early age, the approach taken will be integrated with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, a play-based learning curriculum. At this stage, each child will have the same opportunity to try various activities that are presented in the classroom.

BY DONNY SYOFYAN

Sinarmas World Academy BEST Pathways

Continuing in the elementary school stage, this programme will be implemented by studying and analyzing the progress of each student to then become a database used by the academic team

In accordance with SWA’s vision to shape the future as a dynamic and global learning community, BEST Pathways is also a programme that continues to grow and evolve from time to time.

A truth for Hamka, for example, is not necessarily compatible with what is considered truth for Y.B. Mangunwijaya. While the former believes that truth is buttressed by religious tenets, the latter ascribes it to the dictates of conscience. Plural religion and religiousness deal with justice, which are manifestations of the fifth sila of Pancasila Equally important is that literature is efficacious in prompting students to love history. Appreciating Pancasila means recognising the significance of history. Various events or incidents to change Pancasila as the state’s foundational ideology in the past should be now responded to by driving students to love the country’s history. This is particularly true as Pancasila is the product of history as well.

It stands to reason that a literary work is capable of rendering students more dynamic due to its cathartic effect on the readers. Those whose mind is reeling and whose heart is touched after reading novels, short stories, or poems are ready to change and accept a new truth rather than those who have been indoctrinated politically to defend Pancasila Thus, it is no exaggeration to say that literature can contribute to setting the record straight or straightening out history, particularly to review the very meaning of Sanctity Day of Pancasila nowadays and any other celebration moments.

The implementation of the BEST Pathways programme will reach the final phase when children enter the middle and high school age range. At this stage, each student will be introduced in detail to the four academic pathways mentioned earlier: Business, Engineering, Science & Technology, and Arts. Of course, each academic path will require a different combination of subjects and

The writer is a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities, Andalas University Despite their distinct emphasis on the aspects, writers strive to balance their moral messages to cause no judgmental effect on the readers and control their aesthetic features so that their pieces will not be void of strong messages.

The political approach taken by the government to the PKI members in its attempt to preserve Pancasila will only create historical revenge and hostility as it does away with humanitarian values. In contrast, through its fictional characters, Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk inspires students to have a more balanced view of those who were suspected of being PKI members. Principle messages of Pancasila fall free as justice are taken away even from those who aspire to deconstruct the state ideology like the PKI.

“Through BEST Pathways, SWA is committed to providing support at a personal level so that every child gets a learning experience that is in accordance with their chosen field,” said Deddy Djaja Ria, General Manager of Sinarmas World Academy, in the orientation session. Very carefully designed that takes into account many aspects of children’s learning and development, later this programme will be integrated gradually so that it has a different approach between age levels.

I n commemorating the Sanctity Day of Pancasila, students may wonder whether the state’s foundational ideology remains relevant to day-to-day life in this country. This public curiosity makes sense, since it is no longer considered by many as a rallying ideology, either in theory or practice. Pancasila seems to have lagged students’ minds and hearts as the government takes a half-hearted approach to mainstream the state ideology. Many view it as being incapable of getting over this country’s diverse problems. Failed ventures on Pancasila mainstreaming measures are inseparably linked to the government’s preference for a political over cultural approach. Judging from that perspective, I regard that literature and literary pieces could play a pivotal role in inculcating Pancasila values into the public mind and heart. Reading literature encourages students to be more prudent. Every time readers read literary pieces, they can find moral and aesthetic aspects. Despite their distinct emphasis on the aspects, writers strive to balance their moral messages to cause no judgmental effect on the readers and control their aesthetic features so that their pieces will not be void of strong messages. Efforts to convey moral messages of Pancasila , for instance, are applicable through the exposure of intrinsic elements of novels or short stories to readers. Understanding the plot — cause and effectbased series of events — persuades readers to be patient. Good readers attempt to catch the idea and narrative structure of a story through their understanding of the plot. They will never deduce while they are yet to arrive at the climax. Their perseverance in following the plot sequentially makes them not jump to conclusions and have a better inference instead. Enjoying literary works is pretty much the same as going through life. One often suspects that a concubine is cursed following her ongoing extramarital sexual relationship with lots of men. Through Y.B. Mangunwijaya’s novel, Burung-Burung Manyar published in 1981, one can learn that being a concubine is not so much about cohabiting with men to whom she is not married. Rather, it is to do with imperial complexity and a matter of survival. It encourages students to be more reflective than judgmental.

to provide additional support according to what each student needs personally. The additional support mentioned will be implemented in the final period each day, or what SWA calls the “9 th Period”, which can be chosen by each student differently according to their needs or skills.

“For the 9 th Period, the school will provide recommendations to parents regarding the best subjects that suit their children.

BEST Pathways itself is a programme specifically designed by SWA to support each student to gain knowledge and develop abilities according to their interests and talents—with the ultimate goal of preparing school graduates who are not only successful academically, but also have a lot of experience for their next journey, namely college and career path.

Confuseddirections.tochoose?

In the future, SWA plans to introduce this programme more widely to prospective parents who need modern, inclusive, and dynamic educational support for their children. “Through the BEST Pathways adapted in the teaching and learning system, SWA helps students personally to provide more mature preparation in maximizing the right target area of learning, so that every student who graduates from SWA can become a person who not only shows good academic performance good, but also to be the one who excels in his field,” concluded Deddy.

Deddy also added that at this stage, the lesson selection process also involved parents. This is intended so that communication between schools, parents, and children is well established so that all can agree and have one common goal for the child's Notfuture.only in the early stages, during learning at this level, counselors at SWA will also actively help each student personally to prepare an academic profile for each child to enter college— including to provide guidance and direction on how to get a scholarship according to their chosen university. This process makes the path and way of learning that each student takes will feel unique and different from one another.

Personalised Education with Precision

Umar Kayam’s Para Priyayi (The Javanese Elite), students will become enlightened to how to put pluralism on a pedestal in an Indonesian context. In his work, Kayam writes about the aristocratic values that were not identical to feudalism. Aristocracy is described as a patron of humanity. A person can become a legitimate aristocrat if he or she has social awareness and not because of a feudalist system. This novel revolutionised students’ mindsets on the Respectingaristocracy.pluralism brings students to the point where they esteem truth and relativism. For writers, literary pieces indicate voices of multiple truths inasmuch as they deem truth as a personal thing.

The conflict taking place in Mangunwijaya's novel forbids many from pointing the finger at female intricacy on the one side and pushes a sense of compromise among students on the other. This nation is always in dire need of compromise and accommodation, which basically enforces the fourth sila (principle) of Pancasila on Examiningdemocracy.

For example, if there is a child who is not good at English, in this last period, the school will recommend him to take English. On the other hand, if there are children who are very proficient in mathematics, the school will recommend them to take upper level mathematics for the Olympics so that they can hone their skills even more," explained Deddy.

As an educator in 2022, one needs to be teaching in a way that reflects real life. The curriculum must be taught through projects and investigations that solve real-life problems.

Personally, my youngest daughter just graduated and is about to start her first year at University in Utrecht. My wife and I, being new empty nesters, are currently adjusting to this new adventure. We recently created a bucket list of things to do, including visiting Raja Ampat and Komodo island! You’ve stayed in Medan, Bogor, and now Jakarta. Which city has won your heart? It’s hard to pick a favourite. Medan has some of the best culinary options in Indonesia and is close to some of the most beautiful spots in the world. Bogor was my home for 16 years and was where both of my daughters grew up, cultivating lots of fond memories for us of the Kota Hujan or rainy city.

At this stage, perhaps I’m no longer an expat since I’ve now spent more of my lifetime in Indonesia than in my home country, Ireland. A fun fact is that I travelled solo from Bogor to Sumbawa by motorcycle a few years ago.

Three years in Jakarta have been incredible too. I’m greatly enjoying the extra greenery, the boulevards, the great F&B spots, and have developed a fondness for cycling around on weekends after moving from Kelapa Gading to Menteng. Commuting to NJIS is surprisingly quick, which benefits our new students coming from central.

Please complete this sentence: The reasons why you should choose NJIS are… I believe every family needs to consider their own hopes and expectations when selecting a school. To slightly rephrase, I would say: “You should enrol your children at NJIS •if….”,You believe students learn best when they’re emotionally supported and socially engaged by teachers who care about their •wellbeing.Youbelieve your kids learn best when they understand the purpose of their learning, not merely taking a test at the end of a unit but applying their knowledge and skills to real-life situations.

• You think your kids learn best when they have autonomy with their teachers coaching them on how to think for themselves and arrive at solutions through their reasoning.

The improving ease of running a school has come from the education department’s clearer communication of expectations in recent years and engagement between the education department and international schools have also improved drastically.

We are providing opportunities for our students to work with Ivy League universities and students to give them the exposure they need. Experiential learning – whether online or in person – is how students learn best, and we are creating learning experiences that really shift away from the textbook and the worksheet and into the real world through projects outside the school, expert visits and interviews, and really engaging with the surrounding community. What can parents and students expect from NJIS as the only IB Continuum School in North Jakarta? I coached school football teams for many years. I like to use the analogy of “match practice” when discussing how we use the IB at NJIS. When coaching a football team, you spend one-third of the time on drills –passing, tackling, heading, shooting, etc. You spend two-thirds of the time playing an actual game of football. This is where the real learning happens and what you learned in the drills can be applied to the actual situation. The coach stands on the sidelines, watches, comments, stops the game to give feedback, supports, and challenges the players but – most importantly – lets them play the game!

Is there anything new at NJIS?

We have been working hard on how we support students both academically and social-emotionally in the wake of the pandemic and we now have weekly check-ins with every student to develop an individual learning plan to support them in readjusting to face-to-face school again.

Do you have a message regarding your biggest lesson learned from being a Head of School for over a decade? The best school is all about having the best teaching team – three pillars make a great •teacher:Subject Expertise – you need to know the subject well to teach it • Teaching Expertise – great teachers know how to transfer skills and knowledge •creativelySocial-Emotional Intelligence – kids learn best from teachers they like and who make them feel safe and cared for.

What does being an educator mean to you? Schools need to be preparing students for the world of 2040. In the 1900s, it made sense for schools to look like factories because in most cases, schools were preparing people to work in manufacturing. But educators cannot keep preparing students for the past. As an educator in 2022, one needs to be teaching in a way that reflects real life. The curriculum must be taught through projects and investigations that solve real-life problems. Educational research shows students perform best when teachers give them autonomy. Students learn best when their teachers believe in their abilities and when teachers are competent and clear in their directions and assignments. Thus, NJIS takes care and deliberation bringing new teachers and invests time and effort into developing a skilful team.

I really do miss being in the classroom and I try – and sometimes succeed – to spend most of my day in classrooms. An effective Head of School spends at least 40 percent of the day in the classroom or the corridors, supporting students and teachers.

Gerald, what’s next for you and NJIS? Our school is growing thanks to wordof-mouth from our wonderful parent community. We’re currently in the planning stages for new classrooms for the following school year for our growing community. I hope to be here for the long haul and witness our continued growth as Jakarta’s leading international school.

“ Schools need to teach for the world of 2040 – not the 1900s – and students learn best from teachers who are clear, connected, and caring,” conveyed Gerald Donovan, Head of School at North Jakarta Intercultural School (NJIS) when chatting with Indonesia Expat Hi, Gerald! We’d like to know more about you. Dengan senang hati! My name is Gerald Donovan, a lifelong learner who’s mostly found either reading a challenging novel or trying to master a new language in my spare time. I’m an Irish citizen living in Indonesia for the past 22 years, originally as an English, Economics, and Business Management teacher and, for the last 12 years, as a Head of School.

Briefly tell us about NJIS. NJIS was established in 1990 to guarantee the availability of international education in North Jakarta. NJIS has worked with families and faculty to create an exciting new vision and mission in the last three years. We’ve completed a transition to becoming a full International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum School (for Primary, Middle, and High School) and we are also authorised by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) from the US.

Schools today unfortunately spend most of the time in classes on drilling; practising multiplication, using the present tense, etc. Students aren’t having enough real match practices. That isn’t how the brain learns best. Neuroscience shows us that we learn best in context. Some time on drills may be necessary to sharpen specific skills, but real learning occurs when students understand the purpose of their learning and use their skills and knowledge to solve real-world problems.

Share your thoughts on expat life in Jakarta. A single-year contract brought me here but soon after, I met my wife. I’ve seen so many changes that it’s almost like having lived in multiple countries. Watching Indonesia’s development in infrastructure, governance, and mindset has been genuinely exciting.

A ncient cultures and religions have time and again stated the importance of how our minds, bodies, and spirits are connected. Any imbalances in the flow between these lead us to not feel the best versions of ourselves and to the manifestation of physical limitations. A common and profound quote by B.K.S Iyengar states, “Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind, and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open.” This quote defines how keeping the balance between mind, body, and soul can allow us to become the best versions of ourselves. In present times, more and more people are seeking inner peace and mindfulness by creating lifestyle changes for healthy and positive well-being. As someone who believes in the unity of mind-body-soul, I think the connection of the three elements to oneself is crucial to bring balance to the self to create harmony. The mind-body-soul is a way of understanding ourselves as “a complete individual”. Our mind is where both consciousness and unconsciousness are responsible for our beliefs, thoughts, and actions. Our body is the physical aspect of ourselves that carries you through life and allows you to experience the world through your senses. Our soul or spirit is that intangible part of you that you might refer to as your essence. If you belong to a particular faith, it may be easier for you to connect with the concept of your soul. If you are secular, you might find it outside of religions in actions such as spending time with yourself in nature, doing yoga, or Themeditating.easiest way to identify with the connection is when our body is in pain; automatically our mind is restless, leading to the soul not being at peace within. This leads to a complete imbalance in our ecosystem. When the body is calm, the mind and soul are equally at rest, resulting in contentment. Taking care of your mind, body, and soul can help you be more productive in all areas of your life.

The human body is a complex system consisting of millions and millions of organisms living in one ecosystem with many different cells working together, each of which should not be separated because one impacts the other. Hence, living a healthy life is extremely important to maintain balance in our lives. During the pandemic, more people started reexamining their lives and realising how being stuck at home was unhealthy, leading to more restlessness and stress.

A Refreshing Journey Towards Yourself!

How do we start the journey to reduce our anxiety? The first step is having a healthy body. Quote B.K.S Iyengar again, “We must create a marriage between the awareness of the body and that of the mind. When two parties do not cooperate, there is unhappiness on both sides. Health must begin with the body. Your body is the child of the soul. You must nourish and train your child. The body is your temple. Keep it pure and clean for your soul to reside in.”

The benefits of a healthy lifestyle can be seen in our daily performance – we will feel calmer and stronger in our bones and be more proactive and productive during the day. We will notice our lives change through our more balanced approach to life, feeling younger, bringing a gentle smile to our faces as we wake up each day.

Feeding our bodies with healthy ingredients is the beginning of our journey. All ingredients and food made by nature are believed to be healthy. We are all so used to having processed foods that we have forgotten the rich proteins, vitamins, and carbohydrates produced by all the fruits and vegetables produced from the earth. We need to start by “clean eating” and maintaining a simple yet delicious, nutritious diet in our daily lives. The fresher the food we consume, the more light our body will feel, leading to more energy for a fulfilling day. What we eat directly affects our bodies. Several pieces of research and studies emphasise the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet to protect your Thehealth.second step in the journey is to remain fit and active regularly. Exercising is an integral part of feeling good before we start our day. Yoga enthusiasts may want to start their day with a mindfulness meditation practice before exercising, leading to a more enriching experience. When we exercise, we generate mobility in our body and all the cells in our body happily jump with joy, pumping oxygen and positive vibes. It can also be said during this time it’s You vs You time, where you challenge your body to work out, tuning into the strengths and weaknesses of your body. Meditation is also a powerful method to soothe and rejuvenate the mind and refresh the soul. To fulfil the need for a balanced mind, body, and soul that has predominantly become common, several resorts and yoga retreat centres have created wellness packages specially designed to provide tailor-made sessions combining exercises and meditation in a mindfulness programme. Confucius said, “The more man meditates upon good thoughts, the better will be his world and the world at large.” If you have watched “Kung Fu Panda”, you must have paid close attention to the deep messages of wisdom and mindfulness meditation by Master Oogway. The Master taught Kung Fu Panda to believe in himself and practice connecting with one’s inner self to obtain inner peace and live in the present. This brings a great perspective to reflect upon that the power lies within us the moment our mind, body, and soul are in sync. Following the words of Master Oogway, we can cultivate this mindset through mindfulness practice. This practice is about calmly bringing non-judgmental awareness to each present moment. Just like when the panda learns how to allow the raindrop to fall on him without breaking his concentration and inner peace, he can use the same practice to deflect the barbs and arrows – and cannon balls – that are shot at him.

With a still mind, connecting to your soul, inner peace, and clarity prevail. From here, we grow internally; igniting our intuition and inner wisdom to emerge. We also become more self-aware, perceptive to everything around us, in tune with nature, grateful for everything, empathic to people, able to solve problems quickly and make decisions easily.

A healthy mind, body, and soul can also be defined as spiritual health, something that can be achieved by almost anyone and everyone from all walks of life. There is no age limit to start. The benefit of healthy living is more like a deposit, similar to when our parents gave us piggy banks when we were young to put coins for saving and gain rewards on our birthdays. Staying in shape, eating natural foods, and meditating every day is like a deposit that we will reap the benefits from later on. The mind-body-soul connection is a shortcut to the happiest, healthiest, most vibrant version of you and changes the way you feel, impacting the way you show up every day. Let’s start now on a revitalising and rejuvenating journey towards becoming a brand new healthy YOU!

Thus, pinpointing the best school is a common priority any parent has. With endless options to choose from in Indonesia, being a parent may get you carried away into a baffling and arduous selection process. Is your child starting Pre-K soon? Perhaps your child is already in Elementary, Middle or High School?

In other words, academics aren’t the only primary focus at Sampoerna Academy. STEAM enables children to tap deeper into being exposed to the world whilst grasping a degree that is recognised worldwide to eventually obtain their dream jobs and the national and international high-skill demands. On another hand, through the 5C competencies, children foster into young individuals cultivating alongside IGNITE (Integrity values, Growth mindset, Nobility, Innovation, Teamwork, and Excellence) in promoting a spirit of innovation and cooperation with the integration of communication, multilingualism, and teamwork in projects.

Interactive and educative activities such as STEAM Expo, Sampoerna Academy Literacy Festival, and Sampoerna Academy Got Talent have been held to hone students' character in creative, innovative, and collaborative thinking, as well as invite them to be persistent individuals and consistent in achieving their goals and maximum potential to allow IGNITE values come into fruition.

S chools play an essential role in building and developing students’ character and development. After all, teachers make up as parents away from home. To allow children, regardless of their ages, to spend hours and hours of their days elsewhere but home cultivates well comprehensible concerns parents might have; are they in a safe environment? Will they get the proper guidance in case we can’t provide it? How are they developing as a person? And the list goes on…

Lucky for parents, especially as a newcomer to a foreign land, Sampoerna Academy warmly welcomes children of different backgrounds who are guaranteed to flourish academically and personally.

Many aspects fall into the curriculum at Sampoerna Academy, which in hopes, befits a combination of tailored curriculum to prepare students as a generation that’s ready to compete and move forward with much confidence in the future. Every child deserves a chance to reach success as soon as they step into the real world. A wonderful and reassuring foundation makes huge differences to a child’s Makedevelopment.wayfor your child’s success via a STEAMFocused Education at Sampoerna Academy. “Children’s character is formed and developed through two factors, namely internal and external. For external factors, the two main sources are family and social environment. In this case, schools are included in the social environment that has a big role in educating, teaching, and being a means to shape and develop positive characters in children,” explained Psychologist Tara De Thouars during the Sampoerna Schools System Edu Talk: High-Quality Education for Indonesia's Future Excellent Generation. Students at Sampoerna Academy are also familiarised with Project-Based Learning approaches, as well as trilingual programs touching base in Indonesian, English, and Mandarin languages. The integration of communication and collaboration in team projects and multi-language proficiency is therefore to create an environment that encourages a culture of innovation and collaboration. Asian values that are upheld in learning help students to instil the values of social harmony, order, and respect too.

Sampoerna Academy has a vision of “graduates will assume leadership roles in a global society by being creative, passionate, lifelong learners who are able to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world and who care deeply for their fellow men and the environment.” To achieve that, access and further exploration of the holistic learning experience through the STEAM pedagogy are offered. The international education at Sampoerna Academy follows a curriculum emphasising the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) methodology to develop students' 5C (Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Character) competence and 21st-century skills that are work- and world-ready.

“ My favourite phrase in our school’s mission statement is 'redemptive restoration'", explained Tiina Bynum, Kindergarten Teacher and Junior School Bible Lead Teacher at Sekolah Pelita Harapan Kemang Village (SPH KV) to Indonesia Expat. Bynum continued, “To be redeemed means to be ‘brought back’ by someone from whom we have turned away. To be restored means to be brought into a relationship with someone with whom the relationship has been broken. We want to engage in the redemptive restoration of all things through our educational efforts at SPH. I believe we are all called back to a relationship with our creator and saviour. At SPH, all we want is for our students to know that there is hope and comfort in being redeemed and restored by their creator and saviour, God. Hi, Tiina! We’d like to know more about you. Hi, my name is Tiina Bynum and I was born in Finland. I’ve lived overseas for many years of my youth and adult life. I moved to America in 2007 and married my husband, Joe, in 2010. We have three boys who all attend SPH KV with me. Watching my kids grow up, I am reprocessing what it means to be a third culture as my boys’ lives are distinctly American, Finnish, and now Indonesian. We started our fourth year in Jakarta this summer, and are very grateful to be here. Share with us your thoughts on expat life in Jakarta and the reason behind your move. Indonesians are incredibly hospitable to foreigners. It has been an honour to get to know this beautiful country and its rich culture and heritage. The people of Jakarta are very welcoming to expats, making Indonesia feel like home to us. We are fortunate that many things that are characteristic of Western living are available in Jakarta; it makes our other home feel like it is closer.

What does being an educator mean to you? In a sense, it is a part of who I am. I’ve been called into education in my early twenties and it has shaped all my professional decisions since then. I have been blessed with many different educational experiences that have made me who I am as a teacher. As a Christian educator, specifically, I am called to teach the next generation about the world that God made through the lens of the Bible. Aside from being a kindergarten teacher at SPH KV, you’re also the Junior School Bible Lead Teacher. Tell us more about this role. This role has brought me a lot of joy. As a large group of Christian schools, we at SPH teach our students a Christian worldview and the truth of God’s Word written in the Bible. Last year, we launched a new Junior School Bible Curriculum across all of our English-speaking campuses, and it has been rewarding for me to watch this process unfold. We care deeply about our students’ holistic development, especially their spiritual well-being, which this new curriculum helps to nurture.

In your opinion, what’s the importance of instilling Bible studies from a young age? I believe we learn the Truth from the Bible. As educators, we are called to tell the next generation about divine works of creation and salvation and this coming generation learns of their calling through our faithbased education. Though we live in a broken world, we can be messengers of hope telling this young generation of a lasting peace. That there is someone bigger than us, who loves and knows us, and we want our students to learn and live encouraged by that good news. Briefly describe the holistic learning at SPH KV. Talking about holistic education is one of our favourite things at SPH. Part of our school’s mission is to “engage in the redemptive restoration of all things in Christ through holistic education”. Each child is a whole person, composed of parts that matter and ought to be nurtured. We call our school a second home for our students. In a loving home, the whole child is cared for; their soul, intellectual abilities, and socialemotional and physical wellbeing. We are intentional at SPH about building genuine relationships with our students where they know that their whole person matters to us, not just their intellectual abilities. We are called to support each of our student’s growth in all of these areas, and we hope to do that in the context of a safe relationship coupled with intentional activities in and outside the classroom.

What’s next for you and SPH KV?

My family moved to Jakarta because we felt a sense that God was calling us to serve families in Indonesia. My husband is a pastor at Covenant City Church here in Jakarta, and it has been a gift for my husband and I to serve the church community at CCC and the school community at SPH KV.

To become better! We want to come out of this pandemic phase of education with new strength, new strategies, and a renewed sense of purpose. Yes, the academic content of our subjects matter, and we want to continue to thrive as educators. But this post-pandemic educational setting provides a new opportunity to further build and shape our students’ character. We have renewed our commitment to our school’s vision; to continue equipping our students with true knowledge, shaping their character, and all this through our faith-based approach.

Value-Based Education

This is my fifteenth year of teaching. I have had the privilege of teaching in four different countries on three different continents. I have taught in various cultural settings and it keeps surprising me that though many cultures are outwardly different when experiencing life with children, the joys and the challenges are ultimately very similar. In all settings, parents have deep love and devotion toward their children; their desire for them is to succeed and be cared for in the best possible way. There is also brokenness, hurt, and a real need for healing and restoration in every setting.

How long have you been a teacher? Are there any challenges?

Where do you see Fab Labs going in the next five years?

I also believe that the discussion about sustainability needs to evolve to a new level. What do we want to sustain? For whom? I prefer to talk about regeneration and distribution – something I deeply share with one of our speakers for the Bali Fab Fest, Kate Raworth, who talks about Doughnut Economics. We need to look at the economy to be at the service of the environment and society. Now it’s the other way around and it’s leading us to complete disaster, which we see every day. What advice would you give to someone looking to invest in Indonesia? I think that investing in Indonesia might be perceived as setting up a hotel and/ or a restaurant, or any other touristic activity. I encourage people to come to Indonesia to invest in its people and to produce a value of different kinds. I don’t think we need more investors of the type that are thirsty to maximise profits and to make Indonesians serve foreigners coming to resorts. I think this is a great country for impact investment, developing climate technologies, providing remote communities with the right infrastructure to thrive, to invest in the creativity and innovation of Indonesians, which is endless! So yes, I’m calling for people to come and invest in innovation and education in and for Indonesia, with a planetary mindset. Are you developing any new products? Depends on what you want to call a product. I design learning programmes, and I’m proud of the Master in Design for Distributed Innovation, which we are doing between IAAC in Barcelona and Fab City Foundation. It’s a programme that uses the planet as a university campus and Fab Labs as the classrooms where people learn about how to innovate with technology to produce local change. I’m really excited about it because it’s going to be the backbone to developing the local talents for Fab Cities, and will help us to identify and support the crazy ones that believe that things need to be different, and who are ready to put the effort in to make things happen.

Education is key to enabling a transformation of mindsets. Schools, universities, and institutions need to provide a healthy learning environment to adopt these new skills and knowledge in new ways.

There are Fab Labs all over the world. Why do one here in Bali? All Fab Labs share the same philosophy, and values as well as similar processes and tools. And thanks to the open knowledge in the network, you never start something from scratch and your project never actually ends. It can become part of a different model of shared development. Bali is an incredible encounter point of culture, which unfortunately has gone too far in a model of extractive tourism and low-value creation. It’s sad to see that the current tourism model only leaves a small amount of money behind as the main gains tend to go to international conglomerates investing locally. It’s happening in Barcelona too.

For me, the problem itself is the solutionism culture because we believe that there will be a point when we’ll eradicate things completely. The truth is, we’ll always be dealing with problems and challenges, so we need a different mentality, we need to foster creative thinking and innovation in the youngest generations, to be ready to deal with problems and challenges that become more complex as we move forward. For the October event, we’re prototyping this approach to dealing with local problems and challenges, through the Fab Island Challenge, I recommend checking it here: https://challenge.fab.city/ Education, Economy and Sustainability seem to be three core aspects of Fab Labs. Explain why digital/ tech innovations are so important to support these aspects. Education is key to enabling a transformation of mindsets. Schools, universities, and institutions need to provide a healthy learning environment to adopt these new skills and knowledge in new ways. The discussion about the economy and sustainability is two sides of the same coin. Economic growth and profits have become even more influential than religion, or the common good. We’ve seen how companies have depleted natural resources to increase production, or how the conditions of workers are worse because budget cuts need to prioritise balance sheets. This is not sustainable because both the environment and the social structures that make us humans are being destroyed, and they have a limit.

Bali Fab Fest: Think Global, Fabricate Local

As an island, Bali is a perfect place to develop local production capacity, so we can talk about a local Fab Lab supporting the development of a local economy based on local production. To do that, we have to develop the skills, knowledge, and capacity for local creators and entrepreneurs to have new means to create the products and services of the future they want. So, it’s about creating opportunities.

An interview with Tomas Diez by Seven Stones Indonesia

I have a mixed background. I’m mostly Venezuelan, but also Spanish. I’m an Urban Designer, but also a technologist. And like many people, I consider myself someone with a hybrid profile, both culturally and professionally. I grew up in Venezuela, moved to Barcelona when I was 24 years old, and I’ve been living in Bali since 2020. I felt it was time to come back to tropical life and connect with a new culture.

This is a very tough question, which would have had a very different answer if you’d asked six months ago, and I'm sure that the world will be a completely different place in another six. For now, I hope that planet earth enters into a carbon-negative phase in five years, as well as a reduction in the global temperature. I also hope we’re not talking about nuclear war, that authoritarian regimes are less powerful, and democracies evolve into something new, more exciting, and inclusive for all. I would love Fab Labs to be part of that process and help communities actively design their own realities, to make them more resilient, but also creative and empowered with technology. Maybe I'm asking too much, but I would love the next five years to be more positive than the last ones. How can people get in touch with you? I'm quite reachable in socials as Tomas Diez, you will find me eventually! And you’ll be able to watch the full video of this interview on the Seven Stones Indonesia YouTube channel. Bali Fab Fest is a 10-day event scheduled to be held from 12th-22nd October at Jimbaran Hub in Bali as the main venue. Go to https:// bali.fabevent.org/ for details, the event programme, and tickets.

I’m just one of the visible faces, and for some reason have accidentally become a kind of spokesperson for the movement. The truth is that many people make Fab Labs and Fab Cities possible. Fab Labs first started out from the Center for Bits and Atoms at MIT and has been democratising access to digital fabrication in over 100 countries. Fab Cities started about a decade ago, and we launched it in Barcelona with the support of the local Fab Lab, IAAC and the city council. Now there are over 2,300 Fab Labs around the world, and 41 Fab Cities are part of the I’venetwork.been

What are Fab Lab’s biggest challenges? We have a lot of challenges, from the economic sustainability of many labs in the world to the governance model of the network to measuring and demonstrating their impact. While not unique, one challenge that stands out is related to finding sustainable open-source models for hardware development and commercialisation. I hope we don’t replicate the Silicon Valley model, which is predatory, but we do need a competitive ecosystem as well as support, for new businesses to thrive. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing Bali today? And what are the best solutions to fix them? I’m no expert, but from my conversation with people, I understand that a key challenge is waste, together with traffic, as well as other issues related to the dependency on tourism and its after-pandemic effect. One big challenge is the abandonment of productive activities such as agriculture or crafts by the younger generations, which is understandable because jobs, like in hospitality, provide better economic returns. I think that shows the signs of a broken system. I also believe that most of these issues are not unique to Bali, and I can identify similarities with Barcelona, as I mentioned before.

You’re the man behind Fab City and Fab Labs. What's the inspiration behind that?

What do you enjoy most about it? It’s a passion. I enjoy making things happen. I co-founded Fab Lab Barcelona and was the director of it for over a decade. Together with an amazing team, we turned it into a reference innovation centre in Europe and globally. What I love most, is making spaces, programmes, events or projects that create the conditions for things to happen, and that are not closed systems themselves. I’ve been part of starting projects like Smart Citizen and organised the global Fab Lab Conference before in 2014. I’m also designing educational programmes, such as the Master in Design for Emergent Futures (IAAC-ELISAVA) and the Master in Design for Distributed Innovation (IAACFABCITYFOUNDATION), which I'm both co-directing. All these are aimed at people to become better designers and makers, to produce an impact in the world. I have the same feeling about what we are doing in Bali and the rest of Indonesia. The work we’re developing inside the Meaningful Design Group and CAST Foundation, and the Bali Fab Fest will be a sample of that.

Tell us a little about yourself, Tomas. Where are you from and how long have you been living in Indonesia?

part of helping grow both networks and I’ve also been the instigator of the Fab City movement. I saw the potential of Fab Labs to bring technology closer to people, make it more relevant to their problems, and provide tools and knowledge for anyone to be creative, autonomous, and resilient. I also saw the link to urban design, and how changing the way we produce and consume has the potential to transform radically how we live in cities and towns, which suck resources and produce waste.

I believe Fab Labs in Bali can be a place to connect local and global knowledge, tradition and technology, crafts and new tools. I have to be clear that it’s not me founding or creating a Fab Lab in Bali – what’s happening is that we will see the emergence of Fab Labs thanks to the alignment of a series of key local and international players, and this is being accelerated thanks to the event we’re organising in October called Bali Fab Fest.

The school has been in operation since 2017 and this year will expand to a brand-new purpose-built campus in central Kuta.

Can you tell us about the campus?

Tell us about Manta Hall. The design of the hall was supposed to be both functional and tell a story. The organic shape of the hall was inspired by a Giant Manta. The manta ray is one of Indonesia's most beautiful and exotic marine creatures, capturing the heart of divers with its gentle, elegant ocean dance and unique shape. Native to the waters around Lombok, the IUCN listed the reef manta as vulnerable in 2019 and the giant manta as endangered inOne2020.last fact, mantas have huge brains — the biggest of any fish — with especially developed areas for learning, problemsolving, and communicating. The giant rays are playful and curious, and might even recognise themselves in mirrors, a sign of self-awareness.

e recently sat down with Marc Thomson, the school Pembina and Creator of the new campus for Mandalika Intercultural School (MIS), to find out more about Kuta Lombok’s International School.

We worked with a school specialist architect to help us put together a progressive and sustainable campus. Our initial research on the location used was in line with EDGE environmental building practices. We looked at building orientation to allow us to reduce heat gain, predominant wind directions, efficient water use, sustainable building materials, and short safe access for children to travel to the school.

What is the school community like? We have a very diverse community of cultures around the world. The people who live here range from local business owners to developers to crypto traders and everything in between. The local community are the friendliest people in the world. The smiles you see every day make it a pleasure to live here. The laid-back way of life is a little too infectious. We have also had amazing support from the local government with road infrastructure and support generally. The Lombok Governor, Mr Dr H. Zulkieflimansyah, S.E., M.Sc., recently visited us and was so impressed to see such a progressive institution on his island. Please visit our website at www. mandalikaschool.com . For enrolments please contact: +6281353578345.

Why did you have the idea to start a school in Lombok?

The school had been around for a couple of years before I got involved with a friend and investor named Peter Ball to help provide a more permanent campus as the town is growing quickly due to the MotoGP track and the increase in remote workers who want to enjoy our tropical island. My son, who is now nearly three, had also just been born and the school had been moving from location to location which was not conducive to providing the education the communities children deserved given the quality of the teaching staff.

The campus buildings include modern classrooms, playing fields, Manta Hall (our bamboo assembly and indoor sports hall), as well as arts, computer and science labs. We wanted to use indoor and outdoor learning spaces for collaboration and teaching. We also incorporated traditional Sasak architectural design at the security gate from which the children and parents must enter the school. The design of the classrooms was done in coordination with Manuel (school consultant) and Julie (Principle) who have 50 years of teaching experience. Would you consider this a sustainable school? It is a progressive school and sustainability is one of the aspects that we have incorporated. Manta Hall is the new school’s main hall and a big part of its identity. It is a community wellness space and gymnasium for the campus. This beautiful piece of bamboo architecture will use locally sourced bamboo and sustainable building techniques. That being said, we have a modern building that suits the changing weather conditions of Kuta, Lombok. We used the architecture as a teaching tool with ergonomic features for different age ranges, geometry and shape, scale, light and shadow, texture, material, and nature all incorporated into the design. The result is a holistic learning village with a strong educational mandate that seeks to inspire students to be more curious, more engaged and more passionate about learning and the environment.

itself is located in the middle of a rice paddy, looking at a forested hillside and coconut trees. As part of the design, we have included in the campus our own orchard and mini-farm so the kids never lose their connection to nature. The fruit and vegetables that are harvested are to be used in the school canteen.

The school serves all year groups from Early Years to High School. As a progressive school, students experience a unique, tailored learning environment that is very connected to the local community.

The local community are the friendliest people in the world. The smiles you see every day make it a pleasure to live here. The laid-back way of life is a little too infectious.

“We’re going to start the Padang Dawa Series by Altitude Run on 4th September. It is an open nature race with quite challenging natural obstacles, the route passes through public roads, concrete and asphalt, rocky roads, dirt and mud roads, rice fields, rivers, tea plantations, and forest,” she explains.

This new race is suitable for both beginners and advanced trail runners, from those who are just trying it for the first time to those who are experienced, as part of their preparation for other more challenging competitions. There are two categories, covering a 10km and 30km trail length. “Registration is limited to 100 racers only," she adds. As we can see, Bali is popular among trail runners for obvious reasons. First of all, because of the many hash clubs on the island, no international race had ever been set there except for asphalt marathons run on the heavily urbanised Southern highways! A heresy if we consider the beautiful mountainous nature of the island! Thanks to pioneering Indah Wardhani, this anomaly now belongs to the past. Her next mission is now to bring runners of Bali to the top of the timesheet. Beat your time! Register for the next race at Altitude Run (jotform.com).

The second BTR Challenge in 2021 was this time open to any runners in Indonesia and more than 300 people went on to compete around Mount Batur. The third edition this year gathered more than 550 participants from all around the world as health restrictions eased, crowning Malaysian Mohamad Affindi Bin Nudin as the magnificent overall winner. Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiago Uno came to Bali to give the starting signal, and he even ran a few kilometres to show his support. Now starting the Altitude Run Series After five years of devoting her life to the launching of the BTR Challenge, Wardhani explains why she has now shifted her focus to new projects: “I’ve quit the BTR Challenge now that the race is part of the calendar because it’s good for me to work on something less demanding where I don’t have to sacrifice my family life,” she explained to Indonesia Expat Indeed, the Altitude Run Series and Sky Races will be of a humbler size in ambition and mostly aimed at discovering the next generation of Indonesian trail runners in Bali.

Indah Wardhani, not a sporty person on any account, quickly developed capabilities in running fast that made the switch to competition a sensible idea.

T his Surabaya-born Javanese lady, raised in Bali, has brought the Island of the Gods’ name into the spotlight of international trail running recently. Founder of Bali Trail Running Challenge, a now famous race in the vicinity of Mount Batur that was originally introduced in 2020, Indah Wardhani is moving forward with the creation of the Altitude Run Series and the franchising of the already popular Sky Races, originating from ThereMalang.isnothing vocational in Wardhani’s interest in running. Although good at various disciplines during her school years, she never pursued any sports activities, once a housewife and a mother, and only discovered trail running in 2015. It’s her husband who is at the starting point. Back then, they both decided to share a healthy activity together and he brought her to the various Bali Hash House Harriers clubs on the island where he was already a regular member. Also a talented racer in Indonesian competitions where he was a forerunner, it didn’t take long before he convinced his wife to join in the many trail races Indonesia has to Butoffer.first, it has to be said that Indah Wardhani, not a sporty person on any account, quickly developed capabilities in running fast that made the switch to competition a sensible idea. She attended many races over the following years after an initially timid start on a 12km race in Bandung just to give it a try. This converted into a promising top-five right on her second attempt, and then onto more daring challenges when registering to most of the prestigious races of Indonesia, across various distances, and up to 70km: Tahura Trail Race, Goat Run Guntur, Ijen Trail Running, Mantra Summits Challenge, Sentul Hill Trail Run, Coast to Coast Trail Run, MesaStila 100, Bromo Tengger Semeru Ultra Run, Gepang Ultra Marathon, or even the infamous Rinjani 100, one of the most difficult. A sporting event to bring revenue to the people Never a winner but a regular on the podium, Wardhani, who also carries a spirited entrepreneurial mind, still competes up to today, although she has become the renowned organiser of several race series in Bali. When asked about her motivation to step into the business of sports events, she answers: “When COVID-19 struck in Bali, I went to Kintamani, where I used to train, and talked with the people there. The island had been shut down to outsiders and I realised how bad the situation was for them financially. I told them that something could be done through sports events.”

I spent a lot of time with the organisers of the Mantra Summits Challenge in East Java for instance. They gave me this advice: communication is the key, work this out constantly,” Wardhani explains.

In 2020, with the help and active participation of famous Bali-based German trail runner Thimo Kilberth, she organised a charity event labelled “9 Marathons for Bali”, aimed at raising money for nine regions of the island. This was a unique fundraising event created with the support of the Bali Trail Running group. Thimo Kilberth would run a marathon in each of the nine districts of Bali, all within nine days, covering a total of 380km!

Except for the Goat Run races organised at Mount Agung, Bali had never been on any runner’s race agenda. Hence, her original idea in 2018 was to bring Bali’s name into the annual Asia Trail Master race calendar. Wardhani was indeed at the foot of a huge mountain to climb. Not to mention she had to contend with the pandemic that soon got in the way of her project…. That is why the first edition in 2020 was only on invitation and aimed at the runners locked on the island by the health restrictions. A mere 45 people attended but she and her team learned the ropes. All officials were very supportive As you can imagine, you don’t just decide to set up a race in the mountains. All the more so in the time of a pandemic. She had to deal with countless meetings with all sorts of government officials, the vice-governor, the bupatis, the camats, the banjars… to get approval also from the military, the police, the Forest Department, the sports associations, the tourism board. “From the start, they all accepted the idea and were very supportive,” she recalls now with a bright smile. Did learning to organise a major sporting event go as fast for her as learning trail running? “I learned of course from the many races I attended before as a runner.

Bali, the Cure to Your Problems

Let's meet Pak See.d, one of the best yoga instructors in Ubud, Bali. Mr See.d grew up on the Gulf Coast of Northwest Florida and recently chose to live in Bali to teach and practice Yoga. “I chose Bali because of its energy. Growing up and finding that by having good energy, we can share energy with those around us,” he said. He added that Bali is the perfect place to do yoga and many things related to health and meditation because Bali is a central place that is quite special for yin and yang. "Where magic is real, sometimes a yoga session can bring your soul and mind to meet the Gods face-to-face – at least that's my theory of why this island is known as the Island of the Gods," he continued.

Despite our successes, on-field performances are a very small part of the Jakarta Bintangs story. Community engagement and introducing the game we love to Indonesians have allowed us, in a small way, to give back to a country that has given us so much.

Development is an important component of the Jakarta Bintangs Football Club. While introducing the game that we love to people whilst promoting healthy living, we are also trying to build our playing group amidst an ever-changing and transient city landscape. As far back as 2002, supporters were thrilled to witness the first ever "All-Indonesian" match as a curtain raiser to the season’s opener between Jakarta and Singapore. And in 2003, the Jakarta Australian Football League (JAFL) commenced with junior Indonesian teams playing regular round-robin format tournaments.

For example, the club lost many of its expatriate players when COVID-19 hit, and while we have a strong network of past players throughout the world, what ensured our survival as a functioning football club was our base of Indonesian players. This has come as a result of 20 years of community engagement and local football development. Many of the boys had grown up at Mama Sayang, an orphanage the club has worked with since 2005, and several of them have continued playing Australian Football into adulthood and are now development coaches and leaders in the club.

A blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn used for transfusions and/or made into biopharmaceutical medications by a process called fractionation (separation of whole blood components). Donation may be of whole blood, or specific components directly (apheresis). Blood banks often participate in the collection process as well as the procedures that follow it. The amount of blood drawn and the methods vary. The collection can be done manually or with automated equipment that takes only specific components of the blood. The Jakarta Bintangs hosted the first Asian Championships in 2000 and won, and repeated the feat in 2002 in Bangkok and 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, the latter competing as the Indonesia Volcanoes.

The Jakarta Bintangs was formed in 1995 with the objective to provide a football outlet to the many Australians living in Indonesia’s capital. During that period, teams were being formed throughout Asia by young Australian expats yearning for the game and community environment they grew up in. Our first two games were in 1995 and 1996 against the visiting Singapore Wombats, and we soon started welcoming other sides from across the region. Our first tour was to Bali in 1997 when its team, the Bali Geckos, was formed and we’ve enjoyed a friendly rivalry with them ever since.

In late August, the Indonesia Volcanoes sent a men’s and women’s team to Kuala Lumpur to play the Malaysia Warriors.

Premier Bintaro Hospital, which is almost entering its golden age, is always committed to providing the best and superior service for patients. To realise this commitment, from time to time, the Radiology Unit of Premier Bintaro Hospital is always equipped with the latest technology to establish a more accurate diagnosis and better clinical management of patients.

Bintangs are very excited to once again host the AFL Grand Final Party on 24th September 2022 at the JW Marriott. First hosted by the Bintangs in 1998, the event has been a popular event on Jakarta’s social calendar, and this year’s will be no different. All of the funds raised on the day will go back into the club and football development, with a portion of proceeds going to worthwhile community causes such as the Mama Sayang Orphanage and the Fiona Unity Foundation run by fellow Australian Fiona Forrest.

The huge growth over the last 18 months in the women’s team has had a profoundly positive effect on the club. Initially started and driven by a group of Australians, much of the new player growth has been with Indonesians who’d never heard of Australian Football two years ago, let alone played it. Creating a sense of community whilst also being good members of the community is an important tenet of the Jakarta Bintangs. The club collaborates with other groups to introduce our respective sports and promote health and wellbeing in a welcoming and inclusive setting. And our community extends beyond Indonesia, with a vast network of former players around the world, while our sister club in Melbourne, Krakatoas Football Club, was founded in 2015 by a former Jakarta Bintang wanting to introduce Indonesians in Melbourne to Australian Football. In addition to providing a pathway for these players to one day represent Indonesia at the International Cup, Krakatoa players returning to Jakarta then become Bintangs.
