Welcome to the Indianapolis Art Center! The Indianapolis Art Center’s Exhibitions and Events Department is dedicated to providing our students, faculty, patrons, and the Indianapolis community with a broad range of perspectives on both contemporary and traditional art techniques and sensibilities. We strive to present engaging, dynamic exhibitions that shed light on the work being done by today’s local, regional, national artists, and our own students and faculty. Our gallery also presents shows that highlight and supplement the work being done in our studios by our own students and faculty. Keeping in tradition with the Art Center’s founding as a Works Projects Administration initiative during the Great Depression, one of my biggest passions as both an artist and a curator is supporting emerging and mid-career artists with exhibition and sales opportunities, and financial support in the form of material or shipping reimbursement and honorariums, when available. One of the most exciting things about working at the Art Center is the diverse spectrum of artistic audiences we serve in Indianapolis. Whether it be through one of our six rotating exhibition series in the galleries, the Annual Broad Ripple Art Fair each May, or just a stroll through the beautiful grounds of our 9.5 acre ArtsPark, The Indianapolis Art Center offers a wide range of art experiences and opportunities for creatives and arts patrons of every skill level and type. - K yle Herrington, Director of Exhibitions and Events

STUDENT GALLERY Student Gallery exhibitions give Art Center students an opportunity to exhibit work in a non-competitive environment and learn how to present their artwork in a gallery setting. (For many, it is their first art exhibition.) The goal of this gallery is to share with others and to learn how to display artwork in a professional manner, with assistance from the Exhibitions Staff. Student Gallery shows are bi-monthly and organized by medium. Applications are available at the Front Desk or online at IndplsArtCenter.org/CallForEntries Student Gallery Exhibition Calendar: February 15–April 7, 2019 • Painting April 12–June 3, 2019 • Jewelry, Watercolor, Wood June 7–July 30, 2019 • Glass, Sculpture, Fiber Arts August 2–September 22, 2019 • Photography, Printmaking, Digital Arts September 27–November 17, 2019 • Ceramics November 22, 2019–February 2, 2020 • Drawing, Mixed Media Questions about the Student Gallery? WINTER EXHIBITION SERIES February 8–April 10, 2019 Opening Reception • February 8, 2019 • 6-9 pm Kaylee Dalton: Lush

Dalton’s process involves many hours making numerous water-media paintings and encaustic monotypes. Encaustic paint (hot wax) is directly applied onto an anodized aluminum plate heated on an electric griddle. A print is then pulled from it. Each monotype provides a sense of movement. Simultaneously, layers of watered down acrylic, gouache, ink, and watercolors are poured on papers and plastic sheeting generating depth, but also unplanned natural markings. Pieces of these monotype and papers are collaged with ink drawings and patterned textiles creating whimsical and lush abstractions. She strives for strong textural contrasts reflective of the various surfaces found in nature and the differences in people. Sarah M. Hurt Gallery

Mark Rospenda: Breathing Room

Since 2011, Mark Rospenda has been working on a project inspired by the Gubbio Studiolo (ca. 1478-1482), an intricate, wood-inlaid room on permanent exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. One of the Gubbio Studiolo’s original functions was as an aid to associative thinking. Through inlaid paper drawings, cast paper objects and paper pulp, Rospenda has been imagining what might exist within his own, personal studiolo. The works on view in this exhibition are fragments of that space — moments within a stream of thinking and forgetting. Allen W. Clowes Gallery

SUMMER EXHIBITION SERIES June 21–August 7, 2019 Opening Reception • June 21, 2019 • 6-9 pm Chris Bakay

Chris Bakay’s translucent sculptures work as a “metaphor for the impermanence of memory,” he says. “When I started the series I would research vintage T-shirts and match their color such as the blue Bones Ripper or the faded black Air Jordan. As the series progressed, I was less adherent to them being transparent or translucent. To me, the gold and silver pay homage to an object of the past, in the same way the clear or translucent does.”

Sophie Treppendahl

Sophie Treppendahl’s clothing paintings explore the conventional notions of portraiture while also navigating color, markmaking, pattern, and composition.

Clotheshorse

This group exhibition will feature the work of artists across the country investigating how clothing, accessories, and fashion play a role in identity, commercialism, and social media in today’s world. Multiple mediums, perspectives, and techniques will collide in this survey of all things sartorial.

FALL EXHIBITION SERIES August 16–September 25, 2019

Opening Night is in Conjunction with ArtSparkle Gala • August 16, 2019 Chroma

Chroma will showcase local and national painters working intuitively in bold statements of color. Guided by abstraction and formalism, Chroma touches upon the relationship between artists and painting while showcasing the love affair with materials, technique, and pigment that many brush-wielders hold dear to this day. Churchman-Fehsenfeld Gallery and Frank M. Basile Exhibition Hall

Jen Broemel

“I work mainly with cloth for its tactility, responsiveness, and abundance. I was originally drawn in by the process, the way in which the materials layer. The way they feel as they are worked. The way the thread and cloth come together, transforming and guiding the piece, adding texture, contrast, and comfort with every stitch. I love the history and tradition of women’s sewing and am in love with the community that surrounds and supports those who sew together. I am especially interested in taking cast off or everyday fabrics and working them into something unexpected, repurposing something ordinary and turning it into something special, something to cherish, and behold. I work intuitively letting my sense of the fabrics color, texture, and shape guide their placement and the stitches placed upon them.” Sarah M. Hurt Gallery
