What is design? A designer’s role is to better the things that surround us...in terms of function, appearance, cost and material: but better them also in terms of aspiration and desire, in the dream of how life might be’ TC Design is a process to improve overall function, utility, durability, quality, and attractiveness of a product Urban design is a multi-disciplinary, collaborative process seeking to improve the quality of the built environment; Based on principles of efficiency, comfort, safety, social inclusion, sustainability and response to local character. Good urban design is not a matter of taste or appearance: it occurs when places meet the needs and aspirations of the public as well as those of the building occupiers/owners. Š DCFW 2014

What is design? • Not just about style & appearance • Problem solving • An iterative process of analysis, questioning, ideas and testing • Looks at the wider picture • Has a story to tell
- Objective appraisal
Design is everywhere. There is no such thing as no design. Everything is designed – either well or badly.

What is public value? Public value is: Benefit that accrues to those who live, work, or visit the vicinity and those who use or occupy the building or development The improvement made to local environmental quality and the amenities of the public realm, by a development Sometimes a consequent increase in the number and mix of people gathering in the locality, and thus improved vitality, viability and safety All of the above which enhance the locality and make it a more attractive, sociable and prosperous place © DCFW 2014

Public perceptions of the value of good design:
People are more productive in well-designed buildings 77% Agree: 7% Disagree Well designed schools improve children’s education 70% Agree: 17% Disagree Design of hospitals makes no difference to recovery times 29% Agree: 52% Disagree How streets look and feel makes no real difference to crime 22% Agree: 66% Disagree Better quality buildings and public spaces improve the quality of people’s lives. 85% Agree © DCFW 2014

The cost of bad design? Bad design: Reduces quality of local environment for everyone Reduces vitality and perceived safety of the locality May facilitate anti-social behaviour Costs more to maintain and is harder to sell/let/rent Shortens the life of the project/reduces the economic return Wastes opportunity to reinforce a ‘sense of place’ Makes quality development, new facilities and new businesses harder to attract ...frustrates or prohibits public value, capturing ‘social capital’ © DCFW 2014

Any place.
No place.
Good urban design increases rate of sales/lettings: >20% increase in rental and capital value. (Places Matter, The Economic Value of Urban Design) Cultural richness & heritage: vital for tourism; rich in the lessons they provide: Innovators of the past, not shy of the future. The historic built environment reminds us not only of what we once were, but of what we can be.

Collaborative urban design = public value Positive planning provides the basis for good design and public value. It allocates the land required for housing and business needs, should define the principles for new development, including: Compact, walkable, mixed use and socially inclusive neighbourhoods Sustainable travel opportunities for all Blue/green infrastructure protect/enhance landscape, biodiversity, hydrology Resource/energy efficiency and cleanliness to reduce environmental impact But...developers must also recognise the private & public value of design and retain skilled designers. Public must be encouraged to participate © DCFW 2014
