The rise of flexo printing Flexo printing has a global growth rate of four to five per cent, and it is even higher in some regions. Improved print quality, based on mature pre-press and press technology, plays a key role. “We have a cutting-edge and extensive portfolio especially for our customers active in the growing packaging market. Together with our partners in the industry and our product range, I am certain that I will be able to win over many customers with this technology,” says Carina Shia. Moreover, it is a key advantage that flexo
printing inks contain a lot less solvents than gravure especially seeing as environmental protection is slowly gathering speed in many regions. This is an important factor not just for the environment, but also for the press operators. Koenig & Bauer is the world’s second-largest printing press manufacturer with a broad product range in the industry. For 200 years, the company has been supporting printers with innovative technology, tailor-made processes and a wide array of services. The
portfolio ranges from banknotes, via board, film, metal and glass packaging, through to book, display, coding, magazine, advertising and newspaper printing. Sheetfed and webfed offset and flexo printing, waterless offset, intaglio, simultaneous perfecting and screen printing or digital inkjet – Koenig & Bauer is at home in virtually all printing processes and is the market leader in many of them. In the financial year 2017, the approximately 5,500 highly qualified employees worldwide generated annual sales of more than EUR 1.2 billion.

That Is The Way To Go Digital! Enigo (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is a perfect model of successful Digital espousal in Malaysia’s printing industry.
Digital invasion has worried almost every printer especially Offset printers. They have been sceptical about stiff competition from this tremendous and highly capable modern technology. They have been worried about their present businesses, continued demand for their products, their infrastructure, customers and much more. Mr. B S Gan – Director, Enigo (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd – took a small initiative by installing his first Konica Minolta Digital machine in 2011. They had been into the printing business since 1977, when they started as an Offset Printing unit with a two colour Heidelberg machine. Visiting cards, brochures and catalogues were their main specialised products.
“Offset along with Digital is the core of our business. There is nothing better for a printer than to embrace both (Offset and Digital), as that indeed is the future of Printing.” B.S Gan, Director, Enigo.
Key Notes : > Installed first digital machine – a Konica Minolta press in 2011. > Intelligent decision to add Digital capability to their Offset business. > Today is a force to reckon with in the Online Print business with the agency model.
12
Apr - Jun 2018
About 38 years later today, Enigo is considered to be a force to reckon with in the Online Print business with the agency model. Enigo has agents recruited all over Malaysia and now in Singapore as well, where they collect (or make) the designs and upload it to the company’s website along with the requisite payment. “The interesting part of the Online business is its working on advance payment. Before we start processing the job, the payment’s already credited,” quips Gan. “Professionally speaking,” he adds, “it makes our as well as our agents’ payments secured and pricing and credits remain in the hands of the printer rather than the client.”
Adding Digital to the Offset business It indeed was an intelligent decision when he added Digital capability to his Offset business. “There is nothing better for a printer than to embrace both (Offset and Digital), as that indeed is the future of Printing,” declares Gan. “Offset along with Digital is the core of our business,” says Gan who has meticulously got his management software designed as per their specific needs. “The entire software on which my business rests is designed by us,” he says. The platform so developed by Gan and his team allows the agent to upload the high resolution files for printing. The payment gateway provided can be used to transfer the money. “The software we have designed and are using is absolutely user friendly platform. With minor considerations like distance and transportation, the solution can be used by businesses anywhere in the world,” claims Gan. Gan has advanced his business through designers, agents and especially through word of mouth. They have been regular at local and other exhibitions. This too has helped them in their expansion. “Over the years the word of mouth has become the best source of advertisement for us. Other promotional activities
industrial printing/general printing
include advertisement in various media. We consider coverage in trade magazines as one of the best advertisements for our business,” adds Gan. Enigo’s customers include direct agents, designers, advertising firms and those who wish to have this as a career and have knowledge of designing and printing. “We, in fact, never have direct customer at all and all our business is only through our esteemed agents,” reveals Gan. Being a one-stop-shop for their customers’ needs make it easier for them too to retain customers. They have majority of customers as repeat customers who too are satisfied with the quality and service by Enigo and one-stop convenience is another plus for them. “A hassle free environment is what we provide to our customers and commitment on delivery times is what makes us unique,” avows Gan. Choosing a particular printing process is not a big issue at Enigo. Once an agent sends
them the design, based on the quantities ordered for, they decide which process – Offset or Digital – to use. “Shorter runs, obviously go into the Digital Printing kitty, while the long runs take the pride of place with the Offset,” explains Gan.
proof which makes it easier to match the colours right. They have tie-up with reputed courier services to deliver the finished products impeccable and fast. Usually, the ‘next day delivery’ schedules are maintained within the country.
Enigo has a wide range of ready-made templates which are extremely user friendly and are used by their agents and customers alike for designing purposes. “Our annual turnover is about 10 million ringgits as of now and we expect a good boost with more and more people going Online and placing orders increasingly as per convenience,” identifies Gan.
Gan thinks competition in printing is very tough. Survival of traditional business is chiefly dependent upon pricing, support from suppliers and an all-inclusive product portfolio going to the extent of even hard cover binding services in-house. He, however, has found his niche in his Online Printing business. He is extremely pleased by the payment options, systems based approach and risk free model. The USP of Enigo is meeting commitments. “We leave no chance of missing our commitment and that is the key to our being a class apart from the average,” he emphasises. Gan has invested over 30 million in the business over the years. Today he finds that the business has returned him, above all, the satisfaction of being a successful printer.
The company today has everything inhouse including layouting, planning, film making, plate making, printing, die cutting, embellishment additions like UV and Foiling etc. for the convenience of the customers. With a staff strength of about 70 personnel in the press, Enigo is adequately equipped to ward off any possibility of delays in job execution. Normally, they follow the CMYK

Smurfit Kappa and EFI partnership - to transform corrugated production with ultra-high-speed Nozomi Platform
Corrugated packaging company, Smurfit Kappa Group is partnering with Electronics For Imaging, Inc. (EFI) to establish a robust digital corrugated packaging production offering with the installation of an EFI Nozomi C18000 single-pass LED inkjet corrugated packaging press.
The Nozomi press offers the critical capabilities Smurfit Kappa can use to give its customers short-run, medium-run and complex versioned jobs that are too costly to produce using analog post-print flexo or litho lam processes.
Key Notes : > Installation of an EFI Nozomi C18000 single-pass LED inkjet corrugated packaging press. > Smurfit Kappa to establish leaner processes to deliver ready-to-sell high quality print packaging. > This Nozomi C18000 would be the fourth digital printer operating at Smurfit Kappa Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

As a result of this partnership, Smurfit Kappa will establish leaner and more-effective processes to deliver ready-to-sell high quality print packaging that will provide its customers maximum brand benefit in the retail store. “This digital printing partnership with EFI reflects Smurfit Kappa’s serious commitment to providing the best packaging solutions available,” said Ignacio Sevillano, CEO Smurfit Kappa Spain, Portugal and Morocco. “Our ability to achieve highquality print production in larger volumes with the Nozomi press will mean our customers can establish better supply chain strategies and be more creative by producing multiple designs – all of which can help our customers sell more products and reduce their time to market, while employing a leaner, more sustainable packaging program.” The new press is being installed at one of Smurfit Kappa’s plants in Iberia – a facility that currently manufactures a wide range of boxes and trays, including ready-to-sell packaging requiring higherquality, full-colour imaging. The Nozomi press, with its high-end grayscale imaging capabilities and fast running speeds up to 246 linear feet (75 linear meters) per minute, offers the critical capabilities Smurfit Kappa can use to give its customers short-
run, medium-run and complex versioned jobs that are too costly to produce using analog post-print flexo or litho lam processes. This Nozomi C18000 would be the fourth digital printer operating at Smurfit Kappa Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
A digital press to meet the corrugated industry’s biggest challenges The Smurfit Kappa plant installing the Nozomi press currently does six-colour analog printing on single-channel B, C, E and double-channel B/C and C/E board. The new 71-inch (1.8 meter) wide Nozomi press prints in six colours plus white and can run same grades of single-and double-channel board the company already uses at full press-rated speeds. Output from the press is unique in having certification for OCC recyclability and repulpability from the Western Michigan University Recycling, Paper and Coating Pilot Plant – a leading certification organization for corrugated recycling. Furthermore, the Nozomi press’s speedy production comes with an ultra-fast content workflow – an EFI Fiery NZ-1000 high-performance digital front end (DFE) that provides efficient, accurate job processing to get jobs on press quickly. And with this combination of advanced digital press and DFE technology, Smurfit Kappa customers can implement more-dynamic marketing strategies in their corrugated packaging using variable-data, multiSKU and targeted versioning production – a great opportunity for international clients to consolidate their digital printing needs.

Setting an example in single-pass productivity “Smurfit Kappa is already one of the top innovators in packaging; with the Nozomi press, the company can set a strong example on how the corrugated industry can benefit from industrial inkjet printing,” said José Luis Ramón Moreno, vice president and general manager, EFI Industrial Printing.
“Several Smurfit Kappa plants around the globe use EFI’s corrugated production workflow software products, and we are very excited to extend our longstanding partnership with this global packaging leader by providing the distinct advantages our oneof-a-kind, ultra-high-speed single-pass LED production platform.”
dots per inch. The press also includes a fully integrated, programmable top- and bottom-feed system that also handles media separation, lift, transport and alignment at full press speeds. A 100% in-line image quality inspection system on the press actively compensates for inkjet nozzle, alignment and uniformity errors for superior imaging quality.
Smurfit Kappa’s new press eliminates many of the challenges associated with digital corrugated board production, offering fast production speeds up to 10,000 35x35inch (89x89-centimeter) boards per hour two-up. The press offers accurate brand colour reproduction with six-colour imaging plus white, in resolutions up to 360x720
Smurfit Kappa’s new ultra-high-speed inkjet press is part of a complete ecosystem for corrugated production available from EFI, with leading edge inks, Fiery DFE technology and an EFI Corrugated Packaging Suite manufacturing execution system workflow.

service technician’s smartphone or tablet. What is special about this is that specific maintenance lists can be displayed there for each machine and maintenance interval. The integrated log function allows the user to tick off maintenance steps that have already been carried out, to add images and comments to them, and to save them centrally in the system. Heidelberg’s platform solution View2Connect then even presents maintenance tasks in a 3D model. Heidelberg is already using COSIMA in a charging technology pilot project for electric vehicles, among other things. Linking COSIMA with View2Connect allows the user to simultaneously generate an interactive 3D catalogue of replacement parts and service instructions in 2D or 3D for the first time.
Integration is being felt both inside and outside “Within the shortest period of time, we have successfully integrated DOCUFY into Heidelberg and our growth strategy. Thanks to the committed team at DOCUFY, ‘Heidelberg goes Digital’ works in both directions – internally, we have been able to accelerate the expansion of our digital business models using data-based service concepts. For our industrial customers, we are consistently using our service-as-aservice vision to develop our portfolio into a
new service concept,” says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Management Board member and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg.
Service as a service Industry 4.0 is bringing the issue of process optimization to the fore. With their service-asa-service concept, DOCUFY and Heidelberg Digital Platforms are helping providers and machine and system operators to digitalize and automate their service processes – with suitable processes and tools on one open platform.

W&H and CEFLEX to jointly promote circular economy as a common goal The initiative looks at the entire life cycle of flexible packaging from production, consumption and collection to waste management and secondary raw materials. Recently German machine builder Windmöller & Hölscher has joined CEFLEX, the European initiative that aims to improve the contribution of flexible packaging to the circular economy. The aim is to find better system design solutions by 2025 through cooperation between the many players along the entire value chain. CEFLEX is a collaboration project carried out
by European companies that represent the entire flexible packaging value chain. The initiative looks at the entire life cycle of flexible packaging from production, consumption and collection to waste management and secondary raw materials. An important goal is to develop guidelines for flexible packaging that are recognised throughout Europe by 2020. Other working groups deal with new technologies, infrastructure and business models as well as end markets for recycled material. Transforming flexible packaging into a closed material system will represent a major challenge for the flexible packaging industry in the future, explains W&H CEO Dr. Jürgen Vutz. “CEFLEX is an important step towards
combining expertise in this area and working together to find circular economy solutions for flexible packaging. As the world market leader for machines for manufacturing flexible packaging, we can make an important contribution to the technological advancement, in particular,” states Vutz when explaining the involvement of W&H in the collaborative initiative. In addition to Windmöller & Hölscher, more than 70 other companies and organizations are involved in the CEFLEX project – these range from raw material suppliers to packaging processers and brand owners. These stakeholders all hold important positions in the flexible packaging value chain.

Domes Printing: Protecting Your Brands Domes Printing Sdn Bhd provides premium solutions protecting brand image from being copied in packaging. Domes Printing Sdn Bhd is a printing company which enjoys more than 20 years’ experience in the printing industry. Starting from business relationship to now a business partner, Domes Printing specializes in printing silver foil, high security packaging boxes and other printing goods such as flyers, calendar, paper bag and corporate folder. Initially, the business owned by Mr Paul and Mr Nick was started with a Komori and 15 employees at a factory located in Jalan SR3/6, Taman Serdang Raya Seri Kembangan. The directors who were from colour separation and printing fields decided to team up to provide premium services providing protection from brand image copying in packaging. “Being in the industry for 20 years we strongly believe that packaging is on the growing point,” states Nick. “We invested on a used Komori Printing Machine, lamination machine and other supporting machines to start the business,” he adds. With a pleasant working culture, Domes works with a long list of old employees. Employees have been associated with the company for many years and the business has grown due to this healthy environment.
Their main clients are Advertising and agencies. They cater to high-end and ondemand promotional products for customers that require high quality products and customized designs for their packaging especially with brand protection as a key element.
Products benefit from Branding “Branding plays the biggest role on products; with quality packaging it will enhance and feature the product,” says Paul. “Spend a little more for security and quality packaging to ensure that no damage is done to the brand and image. It will also reduce the chances of design being copied by others,” he adds. With fast changing printing demands due to technologies like digital etc., Domes is rightly focused on packaging, which Nick believes will keep on growing in times to come. “We are prepared to invest in technology in near future to ensure our business keep on track,” avers Nick. He perceives that technology adoption is the need of the changing times. “Technology plays an important role in our business; it clearly keeps us ahead of competition, helps us in streamlining our processes and improves production efficiency and profitability. Unlike the old days, we keep pace with changing technologies,” he says.
Domes Printing follows a standard operation process which helps the company meet deadlines and deliver swift solutions to its clients. “This is usually done by keeping track throughout the process – from the first to the last stage,” says Paul.
Price vs. Quality Malaysian market is more about the price war. Domes Printing provides quality and premium services such as high quality silver foil and customised design to change customer point of view in packaging service. Nick believes that the advice given to client is the most important part of the company to ensure no brand damage. “Quality brand deserve quality packaging!” he states. He has already drafted a growth plan for next two years. Apart from business expansion, he is looking forward to increase man power too. With specialisation in silver foil and high security packaging boxes among a long list of solutions, Domes caters to its clients’ demands as per requirement. Most processes are carried out in-house and for those combinations that they can’t, they outsource. What is of utmost importance at Domes is that the quality is never compromised. This is the reason they don’t believe in price wars. “Price keeps moving with quality of products,” says Nick. “Price war is a market killer, biggest challenge is our own. We determine our own value. We should educate the clients on what product we are giving rather than being controlled by competitive compulsions like cheap price wars,” he concludes.

APP marks 5th Anniversary of its FCP Asia Pulp & Paper celebrates 5 years of its landmark sustainability commitment – the Forest Conservation Policy. Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) recently marked the 5th anniversary of its landmark sustainability commitment, the Forest Conservation Policy (FCP). Under the policy, which was developed with the assistance of NGOs and other partners, APP committed itself to achieving deforestation-free supply chain, and to advance towards becoming a more sustainable business. At an event for stakeholders, APP reviewed the progress it has made since 2013, identified challenges, and restated commitments to areas of continuing effort. The FCP comprises four commitments; to protect natural forests, to better manage peatlands, to partner with local communities, and to implement a sustainable supply chain. Since the FCP was established in February 2013, APP has made substantial progress on many of these commitments, such as: • Ending natural forest conversion by its pulpwood suppliers, and transitioning to sourcing 100% plantation fibre for its production. • Ensuring its supply chain continues to be free from deforestation, robust systems have been implemented and compliances are third-party verified. • 0.01% of area impacted by Forest Fires in 2017 out of the total gross area • 0.1% natural forest loss rate in APP’s
•
suppliers protected areas by third-party deforestation (Mar 2017 – Jan 2018) 46% of social conflicts has been resolved
APP has also engaged local communities, working collaboratively to improve livelihoods and to transfer knowledge to the villagers on modern, more sustainable, farming techniques. As a result of these programmes, the incidence of third-party deforestation, as well as forest and land fires have been significantly reduced in 2017. “APP today is a very different company since it embarked upon its Forest Conservation Policy journey five years ago. The progress we have made would not have been possible without the support of our technical partners, customers, the Government of Indonesia, and also the NGOs who have both criticised us and encouraged us in equal measure,” said Goh Lin Piao, Managing Director, APP, “While we are proud of what we have achieved together in this time, we also recognise that there is still more work to be done in areas such as land disputes, illegal encroachment, and perhaps most importantly, the issue of rural poverty.” In the five years since implementing the FCP, APP has invested about USD300 million
in forest monitoring systems, landscape restoration, fire prevention and peatland research and community engagement, among others. The company also invested in identifying areas of High Conservation Value and High Carbon Stock, and detailed maps of peatlands, in and around its supplier concessions. This information has been vital in helping APP identify critical landscapes that need to be preserved and protected. Commenting on the FCP progress, APP’s Director of Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement, Elim Sritaba, said: “Working alongside our partners like The Forest Trust and Deltares, APP has been able to increase its conservation area to over 20% of its supplier’s concession areas, protecting a total of more than 600,000 ha of valuable natural forest. We were also able to identify and retire 7,000 ha of plantation on peatland in order to start better protecting vulnerable forest and peat.” “The Forest Conservation Policy is an ambitious undertaking, but we are making progress. And as we accomplish some of our objectives under the FCP, we are already looking forward and expect to announce a new set of sustainability goals in our Vision 2030 roadmap,” she added. Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), part of Sinar Mas, is a trade name for a group of pulp and paper manufacturing companies in Indonesia and China. APP delivers quality products that meet the global demand for tissue, packaging and paper, with an annual combined pulp, paper, packaging product and converting capacity of over 19 million tons per annum. On any given day, APP’s products find their way into the hands of consumers in various branded forms from all over the world.

PPGI: A guiding force for Indonesian Offset Print Industry Mr. Ahmad Mughira Nurhani, President of PPGI, shares the organisation’s role in development of print business in Indonesia. Persatuan Perusahaan Grafika Indonesia or Indonesia Print Media Association (PPGI) represents the Offset printers’ fraternity in Indonessia. The members are chiefly those engaged in all kind of publications printed on paper – be it books, magazines or other kind of Offset printed products. The association works along with the country’s government, especially with the ministry of Industry. It represents printers’ problems and acts as a link between government and industry by educating members about government regulations and address current industry concerns. “PPGI aims to develop harmony between all the printers; promotes healthy competition in the industry; and ensures government regulations serve the best interests of the members and industry,” says Mr. Ahmad Mughira Nurhani, President, PPGI. The members of PPGI are printer companies with license and machinery for Offset Printing. The members join the association by applying at one of the Regional Offices of PPGI and paying membership fee. “The members benefit by always getting the first information regarding government policies concerning Printing industry. They also get assistance and guidance in important matters regarding current regulations,” informs Nurhani. As global Print Industry is getting competitive with the Digital Printing challenge, the market for Offset printing especially in books and magazines is declining. “Every country has different challenge and all have one common problem, which is the declining market for Offset printing for books and magazines. The different challenges range from paper supplies up to distributions chain,” says Nurhani. With the increasing demand for packaging, many printers are converting their business into packaging printing. Most industries need packaging for their products. Nurhani believes printers today see new opportunities in packaging. However, PPGI doesn’t have packaging printers under its fold.
24
Apr - Jun 2018
PPGI is the only organisation for Offset printing recognised by the Government of Indonesia. On one hand the association enjoys an advantageous position to provide industry inputs to the government, while on the other, the association with government helps PPGI to represent the country’s industry globally. “In Global environment, as the member of Asia Print and as well as ASEAN Printer Association, we are able to communicate and participate in several printing events and exhibitions overseas,” adds Nurhani. Many key industry events are supported by the association in the country and outside. In Indonesia it supports ptkrista media in 3 kinds of show events: World Digital Printing Expo, Surabaya Printing Expo and All Print in Jakarta. In overseas, it supports Drupa, IGAS, and all exhibitions held by ASIAN Print Member. “Our Organisation is open to all business opportunities, since in Indonesia there are no Printing and Bindery Equipment Manufacturers. We are aware for all new technology in printing and present interests of the Indonesian market,” says Nurhani.
Most of the printers in Indonesia are small and medium size companies – those employing anything from 10 to 80 workers. There are just about 60 companies that employ more than 100 workers. In the present global environment, an industry organization’s first job is to secure the interest of its members in development and growth of the local industry, says Nurhani. He believes that alliance among various associations especially internationally can go a long way in pushing the interest of the members globally. “It can be especially beneficial in order to create understanding about new markets abroad and helping members sell their products and solutions in a wider market,” he concludes.

Tilia highlighted recent developments and strategic integrations that extend the range and usability of its highspeed imposition solutions. “As a young company with an impressive portfolio of successful installations and strong technology partnerships, we feel the time is right for us to make our mark in this community,” says Sagen de Jonge, CEO of Tilia Labs. “Dscoop is all about being ahead of the trends and helping shape the industry we serve, and we have a lot to offer the industry in that respect. We were looking forward to meeting and sharing ideas and opportunities with fellow innovators and trendsetters in Austria.” tilia Phoenix, Tilia Labs’ flagship solution, draws on new developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in automating planning and imposition for all types of devices and print applications using advanced nesting, die cutting, guillotine optimization, and planning algorithms. The system factors in parameters, such as job specifications (quantity, dimensions, colours, substrates), presses/print devices, postpress requirements, and delivery considerations, to deliver optimal layout options.
to a different press and the necessary adjustments are automatically made to the imposition plan,” commented Diego Diaz, Solutions Architect for Workflow and Print Systems with the Bernard Group, earlier this year. “Phoenix is genuinely cross-platform. It does what it does really, really well for large format and small format, on HP Indigo, Fuji J-Press, Vutek, and on all our presses and finishing equipment.” In addition to Phoenix, Tilia Labs also highlighted tilia Griffin at Dscoop, its solution specifically for wide format production. Drawing on the powerful Imposition AI nesting engine, this offers true shape nesting with any rotation, dynamically calculating the most cost-effective way to produce jobs and
minimize substrate waste and associated costs. Tilia Griffin was recently developed by Tilia Labs into a fully self-contained app specifically for the Enfocus Switch platform. The Griffin Pro App was built with two modes, basic and advanced, providing users with a quick and easy way to get started while offering the ability to scale up as more capabilities are required. This innovation was recently recognized by the European Digital Press Association (EDPA) and awarded with an EDP 2018 award for workflow technology on May 16th. The Griffin Pro App is available exclusively via the Enfocus Appstore and can be trialed for free before committing to a purchase.
Currently integrated into MIS and workflow systems from Enfocus, Cerm and Aleyant, providing “Plug and Play” functionality, tilia Phoenix enables users to search across millions of combinations in minutes and dynamically, to find the most cost-effective, imposed layouts. Changes made to artwork files outside of Phoenix are automatically detected and updated. In the same way, unanticipated changes in production capacity are also easily accommodated, according to The Bernard Group of Minnesota, USA: “If we have to take a press offline for any reason, we just spring the job ticket over

Interaction at Label Expo SEA 2018 with Yoav Industrial Print Magazine talks with Yoav Lotan - Labels Business Manager, Asia Pacific & Japan, HP Indigo, who shares with our readers the latest HP Indigo technology and the vast application and business avenues it opens for its users. We met Mr. Yoav Lotan - Labels Business Manager, Asia Pacific & Japan, HP Indigo, at the recent Label Expo South East Asia 2018 held at BITEC, Bangkok. The great Asian event featured about 200 exhibitors with direct representation or by their agents and representatives in the region. We had a chat with Mr. Yoav. Yoav has a keen eye and you can well observe it when he speaks about the printing industry, its future and technologies shaping this industry.
HP Indigo personalisation project with Coca Cola
HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press for labels and packaging opens new avenues for flexible packaging converters, by enabling them to efficiently and profitably cope with changing market demands for shorter runs, more varied SKUs, and customized campaigns.
Key Notes : > HP Indigo 20000 – featuring digital colour printing process that matches gravure quality. > Safe for primary food packaging, the press recently got installed at Hutamaki-PPL, Mumbai, India. > Yoav Lotan thinks it a game changer technology and installation for the entire region.

“Indigo (HP) started working with Coca Cola for personalisation way back in Israel and Australia in 2011 and then proceeded to many countries across the globe including Europe in 2013 followed by the USA wherein it took mammoth proportions and now, you are seeing the same in the Indian Subcontinent too,” says Yoav in his typical style. According to him, the Coca Cola personalisation project in itself is a milestone for the Digital Printing industry with the enormity of the population, multilinguality and the enormous proportions of the country itself. “We had to sit with Coca Cola people
along with the supply chain executives in Delhi for two full days to look tactically into needs of the project and various other permutations and combinations to arrive at a sustainable road map,” he shares. The exercise in other countries has made Coke reap many benefits, like more brand visibility, loyalty and new customer addition etc. and so the experiment is being escalated into other markets as well. The India campaign, according to Yoav, in itself is a game changer in terms of sophistication because the team had to segmentise the data according to language (about 12 to start with) and regions. In addition to this, the complex VDP process and the multiple fonts involved did give its own challenges to the team and HP team in fact had to do quite a bit of programming to pull the challenges of automation through. With an experience of seven and a half years with HP Indigo, Yoav moved to Singapore a year back and presently looks after the Label division business of HP in South East Asia including India. One of his important responsibilities is to support and grow Digital Printing in this area and bring in more awareness about the capabilities of HP Indigo

machines, at the same time ensuring that their customers and associates get value for themselves as well as their customers.
by utilizing this new, powerful, scalable and cloud-connected DFE - HP Production Pro for Indigo Labels & Packaging.
Digital Printing answers MoQ and more
In addition to this, the DFE has the complete know-how of Esko colour automating engine integrated thus making a printer’s life more comfortable. “There indeed is no need to actually invent the wheel again. Since we have the subject experts like Esko joining hands with us and we are doing what we do the best – building even more improved and innovative product like the HP Indigo 6900,” continues Yoav.
In Digital Printing, ‘Time’ is of utmost importance and that is the reason for its success too. “The lead time for a Shrink Sleeve Label in the Gravure process would take a minimum of three weeks at the fastest and in Flexo it may take a week. But, in Digital, it is a matter of hours,” says he. “Digital is a platform which needs to be adopted by every printer considering the fact that it is complementary process to a printer who is already in the business of making packaging for their customers,” he emphasizes. “MoQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is not of any consideration when it comes to Digital – whether it is a printer or it is a customer who is in need of packaging, this is a boon,” he adds. Yoav finds Variable Data, Personalisation, fast turnaround, efficiency of production, lower MoQ, availability of different types of inks including silver metallic inks, amazing security features, different coatings available (including inline sealing, digital foiling etc.) and more to drive the growth of the Digital Industry. The latest machine which does all the above and much more is the HP Indigo 6900 machine which was on display at the show. “The 6000 series of HP Indigo machines is our flagship machine with over 1400 machines installed all across the globe and with the pace at which we are giving solutions, which were thought not possible on the Digital platform, will make it one of the most successful Digital machines ever produced by HP Indigo,” says Yoav.
HP Production Pro for Indigo Labels & Packaging The HP Indigo 6900 has a new Digital Front End (DFE) featuring a new HP RIP which is five times faster than the earlier ones; which in turn helps the machine to run more jobs on it than what is possible on others. Users can optimize and control production, increase press utilization with cutting edge RIP capabilities, and expand fleet connectivity
He believes that the DFE was the need of the hour since the market is certainly going to be more complex with the customer going to get even more demanding, there would be more SKUs for the clients and that increases the number of jobs in the market and they are going to be more and more complex with more security demands and additional embellishments. All this will certainly put the load on the RIP which can be well taken care of by products equipped with matching efficient technologies including the new DFE.
No one can delete a ‘packaging’ digitally The world is changing rather rapidly and our communications too are changing, be it between the customer and a brand or a printer and its customer. People are in fact getting more busy online with a barrage of information in mails, SMS’s, social media etc. and online shopping too is getting higher and higher. However, there is not a way that one can delete a ‘packaging’ digitally. Every product bought by us needs to be packaged. There may be different styles and looks, but packaging has to be there, either bought from a local retail store or bought online. The local supermarket or street side stores very much need the eye catching packaging so that the customer gets initiated towards his buying decisions by our nicely displayed store shelves. Packaging has a long, long life indeed!
case with markets of Indonesia and Malaysia. Singapore is a very innovative market; Bangladesh and Vietnam are immensely competitive in the textile business and HP sees growth potential in the TAG, Heat Transfer and RFID businesses. All of them are growing and every growth, whether in retail or in real estate, results in growth in Packaging and that is where the future lies. “Just get to visit a few Seven Eleven stores in Thailand, which you find in every street corner across the country and you would agree what I intend to say,” contends Yoav. Yoav has a very convincing view that a printer should not be waiting for the time to come to invest in a technology but he should take the technology beforehand and reap the benefits as they arrive. “Don’t wait for the market to come to you, my friend; go and find the market,” he proclaims. “And if you are able to find the market, you will be the first one to discover. And, discovery normally gives you an opportunity to price your solutions comfortably. This is how innovation brings profitability,” he further eloborates. Well, Yoav has many success stories to share with the readers of Industrial Print Magazine and we promise to our esteemed readers that it will all reach in the coming issues of your favourite magazine.
HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press installed in India They recently installed an HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press at Hutamaki-PPL at Mumbai in India. Yoav considers it a corner stone installation for the Digital Printing industry in the country. “The recent installation of the HP 20000 at Huhtamaki-PPL in India shall be a game changer for the industry in the entire region and especially for India and we note a different positive tone when to talk to brands in the South East Asian Region with this amazing step by HP,” says Yoav.
Yoav sees the South East Asian market as one of those markets which will leapfrog to a status which we never imagined. They learn from the mistakes of the west and take steps to get things in order much faster and in a robust way. The challenges that the Chinese market faces are different from what the market in Philippines faces. Similar is the

Vinsak explores Southeast Asian opportunities at Label Expo SEA Showcases the popular Universal Slitter & Rewinder VINSAK USAR to the LabelExpo South East Asia 2018 show visitors; Ranesh Bajaj shares his experience at the show. Vinsak participated at the recent LabelExpo South East Asia where the company showcased its VINSAK USAR. The Universal Slitter & Rewinder drew huge visitor attraction with their main interest being the modularity of the machine. “The machine can be upgraded with the Die-cutting system, Inkjet system, 100% personalization etc. and the customers were all busy in configuring the options that they would need to build their own customized machine,” says Ranesh Bajaj, Director, VINSAK.
South East Asian opportunities “This was a First focused Label Exhibition in South East Asia; it was a good platform for sharing ideas, views, launching new machinery, gathering the exact label printing requirements of printing and packaging companies in south-east Asian countries. We got to know more about printing and packaging requirement gather some leads, generate business and resolve various issues of Printers and convertors for label printing and packaging. Overall we have a positive outlook for this exhibition,” says Ranesh sharing his experience at the show. “The main idea behind exhibiting in Label Expo SE Asia is to explore the market requirements in South East Asian Countries. We have reached & contacted many Printing & Packaging companies in various South East Asian countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Korea etc and this show is the first step. We hope to improve that in the years to come,” reveals Ranesh. Talking of the barriers in the South East Asian market, Ranesh cites language and smaller market size in the market as main obstacles. “We see these markets to have similar technological level to Indian. Though not as matured as European and American markets, these are more advance markets than developing ones. We are currently studying these in further detail and trying to work out a sellable product mix. There is an additional challenge that here we have low percentage of English speaking technical staff,” observes Ranesh.
40
Apr - Jun 2018
The digital threat Ranesh doesn’t think digital content is offering any major challenges to the Labels and Packaging industry. However, he agrees that it is impacting the commercial printing industry such as books, magazines, journals etc. “E-reader devices sales are increasing and so are the number of people going digital for a variety of information. In last two years, commercial printing is bouncing back as people like to read the more printed paper rather than on screen. In the current market, the digital content has replaced almost 1/4th of the printed market share. Commercial printing will not die that easily, when large information is required, people will still opt for printed information and somewhere Digital Detox will also restraint some people to go digital,” he believes.
Environment friendly printing The printing industry is getting serious upon the environmental safety issues. Be it the government, supplier, printer or converter; everyone is playing their part. Some Governments are mulling a ban on solventbased inks and gravure inks. Printers and converters are opting for machinery with easy waste removal and less wastage. “There is no clarity on how much paper and inks are wasted while printing and converting. These things should be quantified and their disposal monitored,” suggests Ranesh.
Some printers associations like Association of Label Printers & Suppliers (ALPS) are working on waste handling projects and promoting it well. The project is about WASTE TO WEALTH means recycling the waste from label printing unit and recycling it to make some new products which can be sold at nominal cost and derive revenue out of it. “We need to have some more initiatives like these from the label stakeholders so that we can actually make printing an environmental friendly industry,” he emphasises.
