The platform also empowers users to print white and CMYK inks in a single pass, turning around the widest array of eye-catching applications in its class even faster. In-line sensors automatically aid improved frontto-back registration and colour calibration, helping to create a consistent, professional look. Introducing further flexibility to handle substrates such as synthetics, window clings and rich linens, a specially designed 17-inch Smart Operation Panel allows users to intuitively browse and manage the Paper Library directly from the device. The larger panel also brings new job- and workflowmanagement options directly to the device, while also offering seamless remote job management and monitoring.

This “invisible” toner is perfect for adding security features to a variety of applications, from event tickets to sensitive documents to gamified signage. With graphic design software readily available, counterfeiting can be a huge problem, but not every business can afford to go to the great expense of security holograms. PPPMM: An association supporting the country’s Malay Printing Industry The association and members are entrusted with production of school books, which are duly printed with collective teamwork.

Packaging is the future and members of the association plan to organise group tours to printing exhibitions across the world to learn the tricks of the trade and the technologies available. They also plan to visit the coming Print China exhibition.

Key Notes : > Association members collectively print school books for the country. > Exists a healthy competition among members to win orders. > Members invite printing students as interns to attract young talents.

Oct - Dec 2018

The Malaysian Malay Printing Press Association (Persatuan Pengusaha Percetakan Melayu Malaysia PPPMM) association has been in existence for more than 45 years now and growing stronger. Industrial Print magazine got the opportunity to interact with the new President Mr.Muhammed Farhan Basheer, Vice President Dato Haji Mohammed Zakaria Bin Haji Naina Mohammed and committee members including Mr.Ahmad Fathi Zainuddin, Mr.Ahmad Nazli Zulkifli and Mr.Roslan Sabdin of the PPPMM. They spoke about the association and its activities in Malaysia.

has over 100 members which include a combination of big and small printers and they fill in the tender for getting the job from the Malaysian Government each year. It is a unique cooperation amongst the members who evenly get their share of jobs allocated in such a way that every member gets the jobs as per their capacity. “School books is a national education effort which is very important for our country and we need to put in all out resources to get it executed in the most professional manner possible,” says Mr.Ahmad who owns Mashi Publication Sdn Bhd and is an active member of the association.

The constitution of Malaysia has secured two industries to be under the Malays (Bhumiputras) i.e., Tourism and Printing and the PPPMM has only helped it increase and grow for the members and their employees, which is a sizeable population of the country.

However, the jobs aren’t offered absolutely on a platter but there exists a healthy competition among members to win orders. “Members have to be competitive to win orders. But it is kind of healthy competition as of now which is a matter of relief for all,” adds Mr.Roslan Sabdin of Percetakan Surya Sdn Bhd.

“The entire education system constituents in Malaysia look towards us printers from the association to complete the task assigned to us to print the school books timely as well as accurately,” says Mr.Muhammed Farhan Basheer, President PPPMM. “Over the last many years and we are proud to have always accomplished the assigned task in time, every time,” adds Mr.Haji Mohammed Zakaria the Deputy President. It is the members of this association who collectively print school books for the country. The association

Talking about the training sponsored by Malaysian Government to the members of the association of which Roslan too was a beneficiary, he says, “It was such training which helped me as a printer to graduate from a single colour machine to a four colour and then to web printing press.” Institutes like Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Institut Latihan Perindustrian Kuala Lumpur, are imparting training on printing by the government. Unfortunately, the next generation is not much

industrial printing/general printing

enthusiastic about joining the printing field. Even young members of family-owned printing businesses, which constitute major part of the PPPMM too lack interest in printing. “Today a young person needs everything instant and printing is not an instant earning industry. The next generation is more interested towards quick and highpaying jobs like BPO jobs etc. which give them easier remuneration without having to get dry ink on their fingers – as printing is usually perceived,” reasons Roslan. Likewise, after studying printing, many students are opting for jobs outside of the industry which is a disheartening development for the association. “Our members do invite students who pass out from these institutes as interns in order to attract young talents and present the real opportunities of growth in this challenging and promising field,” adds Mr.Ahmad Fathi. Interestingly, many printers in the association not only have offset presses including web offsets but also digital presses in-house. And for those who do not have in-house digital facilities take help from the one who

have. “Cooperation amongst members of the association is a unique feature and is a reason for the association to thrive,” adds Dato Zakaria. According to the President, it is important for the members to expose themselves to the latest technology available in the market, study the pros and cons and then decide to invest to reap the best advantages. “Packaging is a field in which our members have not looked much into as yet. But, it is a growing field and we will see many trying to make their path into the realm of packaging printing in due course,” observes Mr.Ahmad Nazi of Percetakan Zainonkassim. Packaging is the future and members of the

association plan to organise group tours to printing exhibitions across the world to learn the tricks of the trade and the technologies available. “Members of our group will be visiting the coming Print China exhibition scheduled in April 2019 in Dongguan, China,” informs the President Mr.Basheer. Joining the PPPMM requires one to have a printing press and production capabilities of any scale. “We welcome all Malays who wish to be a part of the association. We always strive to strengthen the association and its reach through bonds among printers and new members joining for a better future of the industry and our members,” concludes the President.

PPPIM (Malaysia): The association that strengthens the Advertising Industry In conversation with Mr. Lau Sei Kwong, President, PPPIM. PPPIM (Malaysia) represents the Advertising Industry in the region and strives for the betterment of the advertising industry along with safeguarding the interest of its members. It is a national federation and is represented by different state associations. Established in the year 1992, some 26 years ago, the association comprises industry people as members and who include signage makers, advertising printers, suppliers (advertising) etc. The association membership is ever expanding with many related segments adding to it regularly. Various state associations come together at PPPIM for a common goal and mission. Being a national association, it represents the unified strength for taking up issues of interest of different regions and member associations of different states. It plays a pivotal role as a crucial link between industry constituents and the government. For example, with the newly implemented

Sales & Service Tax (SST), the association is currently having numerous dialogue with the government (treasury) on the new tax system. It actively negotiated many issues of concern for the industry with the government like, sales tax rates on the advertising industry and also the service tax. The association submitted memorandum to the treasury on the matter and has urged the treasury to address the conflict between various states and custom departments at the earliest. The association supports the annual IPMEX exhibition in Malaysia. Besides, the members benefit by getting better exposure and business opportunities through various activities and events by the association. Also, advertising companies and other customers deem the association members as more reliable to get their products and solutions requirements answered. The advertising industry is quite different

from other industries and this is also what makes it more important, says Mr.Lau Sei Kwong, the newly appointed President of PPPIM. “Advertising industry plays a vital role in city planning and consequently contributes to building the image of the city,” says Mr. Lau Sei Kwong. “Advertising industry is constantly changing / improving as newer technologies are being introduced to the industry regularly. What makes the industry unique is the fact that it needs to work closely with the local government,” he sums up.

President Peter Chan shares SFTCPPA activities and achievements - Building better fellowship, discussing issues affecting the Printing Industry and meeting everyday challenges. brochures and manual for their products info, sales and marketing brochures and collaterals to boost their branding and reports and news publications to feature their events. Printing is involved in many levels of the products cycle, from factory of its birth to the shelf it will be sold. This vital role of printing make us important to many other industry sectors. Furthermore, Printing is so advanced now that we are much preferable compared to other genuine material maker because of low cost of production.”

The Selangor and Federal Territory Chinese Printing Presses’ Association (SFTCPPA) was founded in 1947 by a few leading printers with aims and objectives to build better fellowship, meet and discuss issues affecting the industry and being a representation in the industry to share information and to advise relevant solutions to the needs of the industry member. SFTCPPA members are mostly printing business owners, from sheet offsets, web offsets to digital printing and flexo printing. Due to the diversity of its members coming from so many different modes of printing and leaders in their own field of expert, they are enabled to collectively share and compare their challenges. “Each Executive Committee of SFTCPPA were elected for their strength and wisdom, from different printing sectors and this line up of the EXCO enable SFTCPPA to provide better representation for Malaysia Printing Industry,” says Mr. Peter Chan – President, SFTCPPA. SFTCPPA organised many events and seminars throughout Malaysia to share and promote current trends and challenges to our fellow Malaysian Printers. It connects solution providers to the printers, tax and incentive seminars from Government Departments and linking schools and institute to provide training for skill workers for the Printing Industry. One of the main events organised by SFTCPPA is Malaysia Print Awards. Since the inception in 2010, Malaysia Print Awards has consistently raised its benchmark for quality

and innovation, to recognise and award print excellence in Malaysia. SFTCPPA is also committed to the representation in ASEAN to build better ties and to share information and issues among 10 ASEAN peers association leaders. “Recently in November 2018, SFTCPPA represented Malaysia in ASEAN PRINTING FORUM, which was held in Singapore to discuss current issues of our printing industry and widening our opportunities to 600 million populations in ASEAN,” informs Peter Chan. SFTCPPA is also the founding Member in ASIA PRINT, stretching the association’s influence and ties to further Asian countries like China, Korea, India, Pakistan, United Arab of Emirates, and others.

The Malaysian Printing Industry vis-a-vis the global Printing Industry Global printing trend has changed tremendously in these past 2 decades. “Ever since the introduction of Computer to Plate (CTP) in mid 1990s, to the Print-On-Demand over internet at the late year 2008, Printing Companies have been busy adapting to the trend and upgrading their machineries setup to meet these changes,” says Peter Chan. Drawing attention towards the vital role of Printing in our lives, he says, “Printing Industry has always been a supporting role in manufacturing, marketing and distributions, publications, pharmaceutical, food and beverages and many more. We produce boxes and labels for their packaging, printed

“Being a trade association, we sets our common mission and goals to assist the industry. We do not allow any of the EXCO members abuse the privilege for any personal agendas. Such understanding among the EXCO allow us to work happily together even if we are healthy competitors in our business,” cheers Peter Chan. He however expresses his concern over the steep rise in the number of associations. “Formation of trade associations is free as long as it is allowed by the Registrar of Societies Malaysia. But, many trade associations have been dormant and seriously need active succession for revival. We are NGO, and we act like one. If any trade association is formed to serve personal interests of certain group, then it is not an NGO. They should better be in politics,” he explains. He believes association to association interactions and collaborations can go a long way to safeguard the interests of the industry. “Mutual respect and understanding among other trade associations will build strong ties and enable us to work together in many events. SFTCPPA has long been affiliated with so many well established associations, locally and internationally, offering us many opportunities and priority access,” he says. When asked what is his advice for success in printing business, Peter Chan concludes with these words, “I agreed with Tycoon Mr. Lee Ka-shing, who said, ‘Don’t treat your business like your wife’. You maybe the founder of the business, but if you apply the same methods today, you may run it to the ground. Open up and listen to ideas; it may not have your explosive history but it will surely lead you to a bright path.”

Malaysia Printers Association President – Mr.Koay Hean Beow talks about the association and its various welfare activities for printers. Malaysia has got an effective competition legislation of general application, which is similar to competition legislation in Singapore and the United Kingdom. The Competition Act 2010 (Competition Act) and the Competition Commission Act 2010 (Competition Commission Act) were passed by the Malaysian Parliament in May 2010, and received Royal Assent on 2 June 2010. The Competition Act prohibits agreements between enterprises that have either the object or effect of significantly preventing, restricting or distorting competition in Malaysia. “It is a free market and it is for the printers themselves to decide what best the rates could be,” elaborates Mr.Koay. He was replying to a query that why the association couldn’t devise fixed printing rates for the industry. With seven branches in Malaysia (Penang, Johor, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Sabah, Sarawak and Perak) and over 800 members, Malaysia Printers Association forms a bridge between Government and the printers in the country. Mr.Koay Hean Beow is the President of the Malaysia Printers Association for the last over 10 years. A printer himself for the last over 20 years, Koay intends to take the association to new levels of performance and achievements. “It is very important for printers to be a part of the association since it carries with it the responsibility of welfare of the printers within the framework of law and governance in order for the printers to be always providing their view and response to any difficulty in conducting their business in the country,” states Mr.Koay. Besides, acting as a connecting point for printers and government, the association was duly consulted by the government to discuss the recent change in taxation system from GST to SST. “This way the government hears the printers out through our association in addition to other such organisations on issues which concern the printers business,” says Mr. Koay. Additionally, a number of inconclusive meetings have been made with MATRADE and the Finance Minister and they are in the process of reaching at a final stage.

Talking on why it’s important for the printers to join the association, he says that the platform allows a printer get ample exposure, interact with fellow printers and thus find

Malaysia and abroad. “We need to change the mindset of the printers so that they value the activities of the association and take it to their advantage because dissemination of information to the members is one of its first and foremost objectives,” emphasizes Mr.Koay. The association and its constituent branches normally have a meeting of its members each month. The association also holds the Central Committee Meeting (CCM) 4 times a year. “Annual dinner of each of its branches is another effort which is largely attended. For example, we have over 80 tables at our Penang branch event which is always in high demand,” says Mr.Koay. There are an estimated 3000 plus printers in Malaysia with many of these yet to join an association. Packaging printing industry in Malaysia is follows the growth path of packaging industry in the rest of the world. With consumers preferring an easy buying experience by picking up packaged goods from shop shelves, everything now needs

Koay Hean Beow: Leading the UNI Group of Companies as the 33rd Salesman Mr.Koay Hean Beow is the Group Chairman of UNI Group of Companies with interests in Paper, Stationery, Packaging, Printing, Publication etc. Started way back in 1980, today their factories based in Penang spread over 9 acres and employs over 350 workers. Starting as a trading firm of colouring books, stamp albums and diary etc., he started printing with a SORD single machine in 1995 producing hard cover books, diaries and planner along with products like drawing books and ring note book to supply to wholesalers in the country. By 1997, Mr.Koay started supplying his products directly to

the retail stores and passed the margin to his customers. With direct entry into the supermarkets and hypermarkets in Malaysia, he is now also involved in importing of pens, pencils, eraser and similar stationery items from China. Around six years ago he bought over a paper trading company which is in good shape now and just three years back he bought another packaging company. With a keen eye for business opportunities and calling himself a proud sales man, even today he claims himself to be the 33rd sales person in his company which has an annual turnover of about 140 million Ringgits.

commonly beneficial solutions to everyday problems. Through the platform, the printers can not only discuss contemporary industry issues inside and outside of press, share innovations, creative ideas and technology and advancement in the field. They can further fulfil their interests by attending various industry events like open houses, conferences and trade shows both in

to be packaged to be sold. “The so called print-killer online models like Amazon and Alibaba have had a very positive effect on the packaging industry especially the corrugated and duplex box manufacturers,” Mr.Koay adds. “One actually needs to have an open mind, a passion to learn, a wish to explore and then innovate to achieve success,” he concludes.

Joy Chan Advertising: The Signage powerhouse of Melaka The story of a leading signage solutions provider of Melaka, Malaysia. Melaka is a picturesque little town about 120 kms from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur with stark reminiscences of the Portugese, Dutch and British influence on architecture as well as style. Melaka is also the town which tells the inspiring story of Mr. Joy Chan who started his Joy Chan Advertising from here in the mid 70’s.

Joy Advertising, christened as just “Joy” now, works with major brands directly in Malaysia. For Heineken Malaysia Bhd., they are doing their custom made internal pub signages. Besides their many customers, they also do a lot of work for Tiger & Guinness all over Malaysia.

The signage business took off with the Coca-Cola company asking Mr. Joy Chan to develop their signages. It was a humble beginning from a small shop lot. From the days of drawing boards, marker pens and dry-transfer lettering, Mr. Joy Chan worked his way up to one of the leading players in the Malaysian signage industry now. Today, they deal in Digital design, Neon and LED and many such modern solutions with the active involvement and vision of his son Mr. Edison Chan. Edison – a bundle of energy with an effervescent personality and down to earth demeanour to say the least – joined his father in 1995. “The sign industry those days was all manual and involved highly skilled personnel for the job unlike these days where we designers are helped by computers and various other gadgets,” remembers

Edison. The first milestone for Joy Advertising could be traced to their acquisition of a Graphtec plotter for Vinyl cutting in 1992. “I think ours was one of the very first machines to come into the signage market of the region. The acquisition in fact revolutionized the process with amazing improvements in speed and accuracy,” says Edison. Next revolution, according to Edison, in this industry was the introduction of routers for cutting the acrylic and other various substrates. “I would place the vinyl cutter and router as the two big leaps that the sign industry has seen over the last few decades and we made it a point to invest in both and that was the key investment that enabled us drive our growth and success,” says Edison. “The next important development in the sign industry (banners to be specific) is the introduction of Inkjet wide format printing which in-fact has changed the face of the industry. The technology made bigger, faster and vibrant colours possible which were earlier unimaginable. I remember the time when we used to take orders for only 3 to 5 hand drawn and painted banners for a day; which today has changed to almost 200 in a day irrespective of the size and/or the number of colours,” he continues.

industrial printing/general printing

“Today things are not as much for the speed, which in fact is taken for granted. Today, customer wants quality, looks for lasting colours, is impressed by brightness of colours, talks about pixels; these are the things that customer today demands,” reasons Edison. “As technology grows, so does the demands of the customer. Customers now talk about CMYK, LM (Light Magenta) and LC (Light Cyan) or for that matter, they talk about white colour, spot UV machine and UV printing,” he elaborates. His customers today like the touch and feel effect in print, for example, special value additions like the raised UV. As the technology improves, so does the demand. The next revolution, he thinks would be the 3D printing which he says is already in the fast lane of development. “I see clearly 3D entering into our industry very soon. May be they already have for signage printing without all the needs of the router, vinyl cutter and so on and so forth,” foresees Edison. Joy Advertising, christened as just “Joy” now, works with major brands directly in Malaysia. For Heineken Malaysia Bhd., they are doing their custom made internal pub signages. They also do a lot of work for Tiger & Guinness all over Malaysia. “Fraser & Neave Limited (F&N) have been an excellent customer for over 40 years for Joy. We have associated with them for their product ‘100 plus’ for their coffee shop signages which are all done on our large format UV printer,” reveals Edison.

is of course hard. Customer come with high expectations – to get products which speak for themselves, are unique and eye catching, are of excellent quality and that can be produced at a moment’s notice. He still believes it to be a satisfying scene at the end of the day, “to actually see our signages across the country as one drives by,” he adds. Joy gets designs (and sometimes samples too) from clients to produce as per their guidelines. At other occasions they develop prototypes for customers which are then approved by their brand managers and finally

produced by Joy. Mamee is a local Malaysian company based out of Melaka for which Joy does the entire functionalities as their advertising agency including development of their promotional products and accessories. Edison thinks the industry is very competitive. It is a tough uphill road for new entrants in the signage field. “Though innovative ideas will always be capable of creating new niche, yet signage business requires a load of creativity and innovation and also deep pockets to thrive today. The new entrants should come in with this awareness,” advises Edison as he concludes.

Joy prides itself as a one stop shop for their customers – starting from receiving (or developing) the designs, to printing, producing and to the installation site which could be anywhere across Malaysia. “We attribute our success to our being a one stop shop for all our clients’ needs,” declares Edison. He however doesn’t believe in outsourcing because any defect at any of the stages will ultimately be counted as your own failure. “A client lost this way or that way is eventually a business failure,” states Edison. “Everything has to be in-house, whatever be the level of investment as otherwise there will be reasons for you to regret in the long run,” he adds. He agrees that life of a signage printer

Superior Press triumphs with higher productivity machines The journey of a printing press of Selangor, with region’s many first installations to its credit and reaching to the top under the guidance of its mentor Peter Chan. Mr. Peter Chan is the Executive Director of Superior Press Sdn Bhd based in Selangor State near Kuala Lumpur. The press had a modest beginning – started in 1976 by Peter Chan’s father. From a simple stationary print shop, Superior Press has today expanded to be one of the largest printer in the town, and specializes in commercial and industrial printing on paper, card and board, such as marketing collaterals, annual reports, newsletters, leaflets, magazines, festive “ang pow” packets, board and corrugated packaging.

The expected 5 years of RoI turning to 1.5 years for Superior Press’ Heidelberg impressed Peter Chan to an extent that he readily made up his mind to buy another Heidelberg – a bigger format CD 102 which he added just a year after.

Superior Press was one of the first printers to have installed a four-colour printing machine in Kuala Lumpur. One of their major milestones was reaping the demand surge for commercial printing for the F&B and Tobacco industry in the early 80s. Capitalising on this opportunity, they kept their growth charts moving and then there was the CtP milestone in the 90s. “In mid 1990s we were one of the initial print shop in the country with an in-house CtP,” says Peter. That was around the time when Peter joined his father after completing his Accounting and Finance degree from Middlesex University, London. “Joining the family business was simple. My father called me one day and asked if I would join the family business after graduated and there I was – into the printing business,” simply puts Peter.

The success of Superior Press is much attributed to Peter’s London education that helped him a great deal in running the press at optimum levels. Likewise, Drupa 2000 was a turning point for him as it encouraged him to plan investing in higher productivity machines. “I tried and explored all major manufacturers including Heidelberg, Manroland, Mitsubishi, Komori and many more. Considering our requirements during that time, I felt Heidelberg to be the one which perfectly fit into our profile of activity. Prepress seemed to be the way to start with and we decided for a Heidelberg Trendsetter CtP,” says Peter. The million-Ringgit investment was a big decision then, considering the fact that there were only one or two presses at that time having a CtP in-house. Soon they realised the need to upgrade their presses as well. Peter had a hard time convincing his father to invest in a new press since it meant almost 3-4 times

the cost of getting a reconditioned press. The first press they acquired was a Heidelberg SM 74 which, according to Peter, changed the whole algorithm of running a press for them. “The productivity of the machine was so good that we even converted a few bigger format jobs to the new SM 74,” he claims. That year they clocked about 45 million impressions on the new machine which was also a revelation for the whole team at Superior. But they didn’t expect the more surprising, which was to follow – they reduced their estimated RoI period. The expected 4-5 years were astonishingly cut down to 1.5 years in which they fully recovered their investment. Peter was so impressed that he readily made up his mind to buy

another Heidelberg – this time a bigger format Heidelberg CD 102 which he added just a year after.

Deciding on the Heidelberg 8-colour SM 102-8P perfector machine Next major opportunity for Superior Press struck with the telecom boom and resulting competition among telecom service providers vying for customers with newer schemes every other day. All these promotions needed printing and Superior was there with the capacity as well as the capability to meet those demands. “One day a telecom company offered SMS at 7 cents and the very next day its competitor offered it at 6 cents and we keep printing the price slash leaflets again and again,” recounts Peter. The demand was so high that Superior wasn’t able to meet them. “We had to think harder and wider to find a solution and then came in the Heidelberg 8-colour SM 102-8P perfector machine – the perfect solution for all the troubles being faced by us,” declares Peter. “Though the SM 102-8P did cost us a bomb – over eight million Ringgits which was about two and a half times the cost of a 4-colour machine, yet our backward calculations convinced us that this was the machine for us to actually go ahead and we eventually did,” he adds as he praises Mr. Bent, earstwhile MD of Heidelberg Malaysia Sdn Bhd, for his advice to go for this Heidelberg mammoth.

as it was becoming ever harder for them to handle the increased logistics due to increased capacity. Same year they bought the present Selangor premises – a 180,000 square feet working place. Peter didn’t find it practical to move their existing 8-colour machine as that could mean loss of production and customers. And another 8-colour was added to install at the new premises. “It seemed a crazy decision but eventually the decision paid well to the satisfaction of both our customers as well as my mentor, my father,” he smiles. They kept adding many more machines and equipment to the state-of-the-art facility which today boasts an array of Heidelbergs,

One of the key elements of Superior Press’ success is planning. Peter devotedly plans his daily activities as he spends his morning hours planning the various tenders and quotations whereas the afternoons are spent with the sales, relationship and marketing team. Apart from his printing business, he has invested in a few other ventures as well including real estate. “Trends change very quickly and it is important to innovate and expand. It is equally important to work on one’s own ideas with passion and sincerity,” concludes Peter whose passion to follow his ideas devotedly has indeed helped him take Superior Press to the top.

PROSPER S-Series Imprinting Heads – perhaps the best kept secret for hybrid printing in packaging. There are over 1,500 Kodak imprinting heads in the market today. Most of these are installed for newspaper, direct mail and addressing applications. While this is impressive, packaging converters and brands are just catching on to the value this can bring to their digital strategies to better connect with consumers and optimize their production costs by integrating these heads with their gravure, flexo and offset presses. What has changed? First, Kodak has introduced packaging inks and fluids that are safe for indirect food contact applications for folding carton, corrugated and flexible substrates. As Kodak has presented this at industry trade events, the immediate response has been, ‘I did not know you could print that fast and achieve that level of image quality.’ Perhaps this could be the best kept secret for packaging converters. The trends driving the need for cost effective variable and short run printing are compelling. While packaging is increasing in volume printed, there are dramatic shifts

to shorter runs and SKU proliferation, so a print run of 100,000 could really be 10 runs of 10,000 each. Brands are also significantly increasing their promotional programs and eCommerce initiatives to better connect with the consumer. However, these shorter runs and need to add variable content can’t be produced cost effectively with conventional equipment and at times are difficult to produce with a digital press format. That is where hybrid printing offers the best of both worlds, enabling variable content and design freedom for brands, while allowing their

reduction in run lengths, along with a significant increase in promotional programs. That means brands are doing more market testing with greater variety per carton. PROSPER S-Series heads are helping converters add QR codes and promotional content, in-line with their conventional press.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) expects that online retail will grow 8-12%, three times higher than the growth rate of the wider industry. This is driving more creative primary and secondary packaging design along with simple coding for track and trace in corrugated and folding carton to enable inventory control and consumer opt-in to promotions and loyalty programs. This flexibility can only be achieved with Digital.

W&H develops milestone digital printing machine Development project based on inkjet technology reaches first milestone with digital printing machine for flexible packaging. While digital printing is already firmly established in the label and commercial printing sector, flexible packaging continues to be a challenge: An economical and stable digital printing process has yet to be developed. W&H, machine builder and specialist for flexible packaging, has reached a first milestone in its development project with a machine concept for a new digital printing machine. Now the technology leader starts onboarding partners, including leading inkjet printhead manufacturer Xaar. The digital printing machine from W&H is based on piezo inkjet technology. “We see a need in the flexible packaging market to use digital printing in addition to the established processes. This is driven by the need for faster time-to-market and very short order lengths,” explains Dr. Jürgen Vutz, CEO of W&H. “However, the application of flexible packaging has very special requirements, for example regarding the adhesion of the ink to the film. As specialists in this market, we bring expert knowledge to offer answers to these challenges – first, by continuously advancing the established processes such as flexo and gravure printing; second, by opening up the possibilities of digital printing for flexible packaging.” W&H has been conducting research in the field of digital printing for several years. Since 2016, the digital printing team drives forward the implementation with a development project involving investments in the millions.

“We first collected practical requirements, evaluated technologies and tested new approaches. This has resulted in a machine concept that stands out from all existing approaches and provides our customers with added value. We are now implementing this with suitable partners. The new digital machine concept from W&H is characterized by higher quality and higher speeds,” explains Sven Michael, head of the digital team at W&H. “High availability and usability in daily use are our top priorities. Our goal is to go to market with a functioning and mature digital printing machine that delivers on the promises of digital printing for flexible packaging as well,” summarizes Vutz.

Heidelberg takes on digital postpress with MBO takeover Plans for more digital postpress offerings to reach new target groups. Heidelberg is taking over the international MBO Group in a bid to further expand its offerings in the growing market of postpress operations for digitally printed products. The move will also see the company gain access to new customers in the pharmaceutical industry and add mailing system offerings to its offset portfolio. Heidelberg aims to use this extended offering to tap into new customer groups for its entire product portfolio. “The planned takeover of the MBO Group enables us to attain further sustainable and profitable growth by leveraging new technologies and customer segments,” said Rainer Hundsdörfer, CEO of Heidelberg. “By acquiring MBO’s digital portfolio, we are closing a gap for our customers and helping them achieve a smooth industrial process in the digital future. We also expect to see synergies in our own value added chain, which will bring about tangible benefits for customers, too.” The acquired operations account for a sales volume of around euro 50 million and will see Heidelberg expand its postpress offerings. The acquisition involves, among other things, taking over the sites in Oppenweiler and Bielefeld, Germany, and the production site in Perifita, Portugal, which employ a total of approximately 450 staff. Besides the German sites, the efficiently structured site in Portugal opens up particularly interesting opportunities for the entire Heidelberg Group. “Even when postpress operations are running efficiently, there is still huge potential for boosting productivity throughout the entire print shop,” claims Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for

Over 450 visitors experienced how productivity can be significantly increased with digitized and automated processes at the open house at Heidelberg Japan in Tokyo at the end of July. Under the motto “Smart Print Shop” with “Push to Stop”, the guests from Japan and Asia saw how an integrated workflow incorporates all processes and optimizes the overall equipment efficiency (OEE). Push to Stop is setting new rules for the game: whereas in the past the operator had to manually initiate a large number of steps in the production process, now he only needs to intervene in the automated process chain as necessary. Thanks to intelligent networking and automation, the machines can organize and handle the production process on their own. This goes as far as autonomous printing, and has the potential to double the OEE. Heidelberg has sold over 400 machines suitable for Push to Stop since it was introduced at drupa 2016.

Japanese customers want to increase productivity Japanese and Asian print shops are already highly industrialized, but want further productivity increases to remain competitive and be profitable. They saw the answer at the open house in the shape of a Speedmaster XL 106 eight-colour machine with

perfecting, which independently produced twelve magazine signatures with a run length of 150 sheets within 30 minutes. This record was possible thanks to the high level of automation of the machine, standardized jobs, and the integration into the Prinect print shop workflow. The Speedmaster XL 106 was equipped with Prinect Press Center XL 2, Wallscreen XL, and Intellistart 2 as well as the Prinect Inpress Control 2 inline spectral measurement and control system. The innovative DryStar LED UV drying technology resulted in instantly dry sheets in the delivery, which were sent directly for further processing in the postpress machines also integrated into the workflow – the Stahlfolder KH 82 folding machine and Polar cutting systems. Saphira coordinated consumables from the Lifecycle Solutions division also optimized the overall process. The new Versafire EV and Versafire EP digital printing systems were presented at the open house and printed 28 different jobs on a wide range of substrates and with different applications. The Versafire EV is aimed at customers who want to realize creative applications and enhanced business models. The Versafire EP is designed for flexible production and maximum performance.

When asked about their impressions, the visitors expressed their positive thoughts: Heidelberg is the technology leader that is consistently driving the digital transformation and in this way setting standards in the print media industry.

Digital presentation was well received by visitors The company also proved this at IGAS, which took place in Tokyo around the same time, from 26 to 31 July 2018. The audience there was amazed by the Primefire 106 presentation using virtual reality (VR). As the first commercially available industrial inkjet digital printing system in 70 x 100 cm format, the Heidelberg Primefire 106 allows print shops to produce an increasing number of variants with declining run lengths in a profitable way, bring products to the market faster, and reduce logistics costs through print-on-demand functions. Sample runs can also be produced quickly and easily for market research purposes or

decision making. The “Primefire 106 Super Journey” VR shows were all booked out down to the last place and over 1,700 visitors experienced the machine and all its details up close and in 3D.

Asia thinks digital Heidelberg Smart Print Shop concept successfully established.

The print media industry in Asia is facing the same challenges as in other markets: print runs are getting shorter, the number of jobs is increasing, embellishment is becoming more and more complex, and all this with the shortest delivery times and lowest costs. Digitalization is progressing and these advantages are to be implemented internally in processes and externally in communication with print shop customers.

Almost 400 customers from Greater China and the Asia-Pacific region attended Heidelberg Commercial Day at the Heidelberg Print Media Center in Shanghai.

At the end of October, more than 400 customers experienced what this could look like by attending the Commercial Day at the Print Media Center Shanghai, China. Under the motto “Turn Passion into Profit”, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) presented sustainable solutions to make commercial print shops more successful and to guide them on their way to the Smart Print Shop. The fully automated process chain with the Push to Stop philosophy, which is only interrupted manually if necessary, was demonstrated in networked live presentations. This optimized, intelligent production process stands for higher production reliability and thus for more productivity and cost-effectiveness. The Smart Print Shop is based on the Prinect workflow, which completely networks and automates

processes from prepress, digital and offset presses through to postpress. This reduces contact points in the production process and sustainably increases process efficiency.

Push to stop for high throughput The visitors were very impressed with the integrated and touch-point reduced operation of the Speedmaster CS 92-5 LE UV in combination with immediate processing with a Polar Cutting System 300 thanks to the dry sheets in the delivery. Teamwork was presented between the newly launched Versafire EV and the Speedmaster SX 74-4. plant Qingpu nearby Shanghai and was first shown to the Asian market with the new features AutoPlate Pro. Thanks to integration and presetting five jobs were printed in less than 15 minutes and immediately finished with a Stahlfolder machine. Thus Push to Stop results in a production, which is easy, secure, efficient and profitable. At the end of the demonstrations, the OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) was calculated and it was demonstrated how an increase in OEE can make production more efficient and job runs shorter and shorter. A Speedmaster CD 102-7+L UV presented a 7-color multicolour job, demonstrating the wide range of spot colours achievable which covers the needs of more and more embellishment. A key component of Heidelberg’s Lifecycle Solution portfolio for customers is the Saphira consumables, which aim to maximize the OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) utilization of their presses through maximum quality, productivity and production reliability.

New Versafire generation celebrates premiere in China The new Versafire generation EV/EP made its debut in the Chinese market on Commercial Day. The Versafire EV digital printing system provides customers with a high degree of flexibility and creative possibilities, enabling them to further expand their digital business model through diversification and optimization. With the new “Invisible Red” special toner, there are now a total of five spot colours for the Versafire EV. Just like white, varnish, neon yellow and neon pink, “Invisible Red” provides additional embellishment options. For the first time it is now also possible to print first white and then the process colours CMYK. When printing on coloured paper and foils, extraordinary effects can be achieved – all in one pass, where previously several processes were necessary, which significantly improves efficiency.

is integrated into the Heidelberg plant in Qingpu, serves as a central showroom for China, other Asian Pacific markets and neighboring regions such as northeast Russia. Here, state-of-the-art technology and service solutions are presented, information events are held, and intensive tests and analyses of equipment, consumables and workflow solutions are carried out. Customer operators are also trained here. The Print Media Center Shanghai has fully integrated workflows for commercial and packaging printers. The Qingpu plant is Heidelberg’s production site in Asia and is located nearby Shanghai. It assembles Speedmaster presses in 50 x 70 and 70 x 100 format, from four to seven-

colour models, mainly for the Chinese market and the Asian Pacific markets. More than 380 employees work for production in Qingpu and around 140 for sales and service for Heidelberg East China. “This is not my first time to visit the Print Media Center in Qingpu and Qingpu workshops. But I like the whole arrangement here, especially the new look of the PMC, the real production environment as a Smart Print Shop, as well as the unique live demonstrations. I’m really glad to join this kind of event which can broaden our horizons and help us generate our business,” this resume was given by one customer after his visit of the Heidelberg Commercial Day.

The Versafire EP is a high-performance digital printing system that scores with constant stability and high productivity. Thanks to the new inline calibration, consistent colour stability is achieved from the first sheet to the last. New formats offer extended application possibilities.

Xeikon’s new entry-level Digital Label Production solution at Labelexpo Xeikon 3030 + entryDCoat = digital print and converting solution with lower cost of entry and operating cost for professional printers. Xeikon’s new entry-level label printing and converting solution is offered at a price point that brings the lucrative label market squarely within reach for label converters of all sizes. The Label Discovery solution consists of a Xeikon 3030, an entry-level web-fed digital label press and the new entryDcoat, a digital converting line that can be used inline or offline with the Xeikon 3030. The new solution featured at the company’s booth at Labelexpo Americas, September 25-27, Rosemont, Illinois. “Although digital label printing has become a fast-growing mainstream business, some companies are still reluctant to invest in the technology – either due to the cost or lack of a truly professional-quality entry-level solution,” said David Wilkins, Xeikon’s Vice President of Sales for the North American market. “The lower cost of the Xeikon Label Discovery solution enables these companies to embrace digital technology and capture a business potential that previously required a steep investment – the crucial business of producing short-run labels. “The Label Discovery solution is a turnkey label production system that provides everything needed to offer an expanded range of services to their customers and to experience the benefits digital production can bring to their businesses. In addition to enabling an affordable entry into this lucrative market, the Label Discovery solution is a platform that can be field upgraded in terms of productivity as the business grows, ensuring long-term viability of the investment.” The Xeikon 3030 digital label press is a dry toner solution ideal for producing labels for a broad range of applications using standard flexo materials. This avoids the need to use specially-treated substrates, and eliminates the associated warehousing costs. Its fivecolour printing features CMYK and white or even a special spot or gamut-extending colour. Changing toner colours on the system is relatively easy, a clear benefit of dry toner compared to other printing technologies. In addition, dry toner is recognized as the best

technology for food labels in terms of food safety due to its non-toxic nature. Xeikon dry toner has also received FDA certification for both indirect and direct food contact with dry food, which is unique in the digital landscape. The entryDCoat is a compact converting unit which consists of a varnish, die-cut and rewind station. To limit startup and tooling costs, the die-cut unit uses semi-rotary diecutting technology. This ensures the lowest cost converting without loss of productivity while still delivering the well-known quality of conventional die-cutting. With semi-rotary die-cutting, costs can be reduced by as much as 50% with no need to acquire special tools and no setup time as required with conventional die-cutting. “We are featuring the Label Discovery solution at a busy and exciting Labelexpo

Americas,” said Filip Weymans, Xeikon’s Vice President of Marketing. “We are also demonstrating the Xeikon PX3000 UV inkjet label press, as well as the toner-based Xeikon 3500 and Xeikon CX3 presses, offering attendees the ability to evaluate multiple technologies to determine what best meets their label needs.” “We are pleased to be participating in the American debut of Labelexpo’s Automation Arena, illustrating the industry 4.0 enabled, automated self-adhesive digital label production. Xeikon label experts are available throughout the show to speak with visitors about their business needs and provide guidance on the best possible ways to profit and grow,” said Filip during the show. Xeikon exhibited in Hall A #728 which was also home at the show for parent company Flint Group.

Konica Minolta Solutions Day features seven product launches Konica Minolta forges ahead with introduction of IT-focused products for SMEs. Konica Minolta is headed for a revitalisation of its business focus with the introduction of IT-focused products targeting a wide crosssection of industries and business solutions created expressly for SMEs. At the Konica Minolta Solutions Day event held on 4 October at Eastin Hotel, Konica Minolta introduced a total of seven products and solutions to establish its footprint in the company’s new IT-focused business portfolio. “The seismic shift in technology was a key consideration in our new IT-focused direction,” says C.K. Lim, Director and General Manager, Konica Minolta Business Solutions (M) Sdn Bhd. “This corporate transformation is also aligned to the ‘Shinka 2019’ plan that prioritises the creation of real value through innovation.” ‘Shinka’’, which means ‘evolution’ in Japanese, is designed to transform Konica Minolta to be a digital technology company. The primary objectives of Konica Minolta Solutions Day was to showcase the company’s latest range of products, solutions and services to business owners, C-level suites, and mid-to-senior management of a broad cross-section of industries.

distribution, and commercial industrial printing. For the coming year, the company plans to target three key sectors – SMEs, manufacturing and government – through collaborative partnerships, trade exhibitions and digital marketing. According to global research firm IDC, at least 50 percent of global gross domestic product will be digitised by 2021.

The products showcased at the event were production printers, office solutions, Robotics, Mobotix, ERP solutions, managed IT solutions, and a preview of two new future vertical products – Woundaide and Oil and Gas Monitoring solution.

“Our IT-enabled products such as ERP and MIT solutions are geared to helping SMEs towards digital transformation,” notes Lim. “Our solutions are defined to help SMEs manage their IT infrastructure, including IT oursourcing services and technical support.”

“One of our goals next year is to help SMEs migrate to the digital sphere while advancing to Industry 4.0,” adds Lim. “Apart from business solutions products, we also have Robotics for digital manufacturing to help increase productivity and work process efficiency.”

For the near future, Konica Minolta is confident in achieving five percent growth in its core printing automation, and a positive growth ratio for the new IT-focused business.

Konica Minolta’s core imaging, material, nanofabrication and optical technologies have now been expanded to include nursing care, medical, manufacturing, retail sales

Says Lim: “In terms of developing proprietary next-generation technology, we are working to attract sizeable partnership investments while concurrently capitalising on research and development, and recruiting and providing professional development training to qualified staff to create pioneering products.”

Companies can be crippled by the very things that made them strong. The key, explains Lim, is disruptive technologies that appeal to the mainstream sectors that can realise long-term profits. “The spirit of entrepreneurship must always be part of our lifecycle,” Lim states. “Our slogan, ‘Giving shape to ideas through technology and innovation’, has enabled us to invest in future success stories by constanly evolving to stay relevant.” An overwhelming number of vendors, partners, heads of departments and business owners attended the one-day Konica Minolta Solutions Day event. Konica Minolta Business Solutions (M) Sdn Bhd was established over 37 years ago in Malaysia with a wide network of 12 branches throughout Malaysia. With its customer-centric solutions and hardware for the digitally connected world, it is enabling transformation of the workplace of the future by optimising business processes with workflow automation while continuing with the organic print business, covering office printing, production printing and industrial printing. Konica Minolta, Inc. has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for seven years in a row.

Marabu at Glasstec 2018 Presents ink solutions suitable for the glass industry, including screen, digital and pad printing.

At this year’s Glasstec in Düsseldorf from 23 to 26 October, Marabu (hall 12, stand B23) unveiled two new screen-printing inks for decorating glass. The company, a specialist in organic inks, also spotlighted its broad range of products for the traditional printing of bottles, drinking glasses, fragrance bottles and flat glass.

A world first: a single-component ink for glass and metal

A particular highlight at their stand was a single component ink for glass applications that is unique in character worldwide.

Key Notes : > Highlights singlecomponent ink system Mara Tech MGO for metal and glass. > New two-component Mara Glass MGLA for printing on second surfaces. > Draws attention to the broad range of applications for UV curable digital direct printing.

44

Oct - Dec 2018

One of Marabu’s highlights in Düsseldorf was its single-component ink system Mara Tech MGO for metal and glass. The baking ink can be used for both screen and pad printing, and can be deployed in a wide variety of scenarios. MGO is ideal for printing on the first and second surfaces of flat and container glass. It is particularly suitable for the food and personal-care product industries. Mara Tech MGO is BPA-free and highly resistant to chemicals, making it an outstanding solution for sensitive products, i.e. with heightened safety needs, especially baby bottles and medical supplies.

for printing on glass touchscreens and touchpads. Moreover, the company has developed the new two-component Mara Glass MGLA for printing on second surfaces, i.e. on the back of the substrate – this is primarily employed for outdoor applications, including door intercoms, ticket vending machines, streetlight management systems (e.g. at airports or in pedestrian zones), and boat control systems. It is also suitable for lamination.

New screen-printing ink for touchscreens, panels and front panels

A broad portfolio of solvent-based and UV-curable inks

Marabu offers UV-curable and solvent-based inks such as Ultra Glass UVGL and Mara Glass MGL

Although UV-curable inks such as Marabu’s Ultra Glass UVGL are increasingly popular, solvent-based

industrial printing/uv printing

inks remain relevant in many situations – particularly for designs with a single colour. In Düsseldorf, Marabu showcased its solventbased screen printing ink Mara Glass MGL, plus its pad-printing solution Tampa Glass TPGL, which can be used as a four-colour system. For both screen and pad printing, MGL and TPGL are compatible with diverse substrates, and deliver brilliant, precise colours. The two-component UV-curable ink Ultra Glass UVGL also cuts energy costs and upfront investment, and enables fast production processes for greater efficiency.

Elegant and eye-catching effects Three-dimensional effects are both tangibly and visually attractive. Until now, manufacturers have employed casting technology to create visual effects on bottles and other glass items. This requires costly moulds, and is generally only commercially viable for very large production volumes. However, Marabu has developed an attractive alternative: its UVGL-RH/-RL ink can be harnessed to create tactile effects that could previously only be achieved via moulding. A thick-film coating is precisely applied to a screen-printed design on flat or container glass – exactly matching the existing contours. It is then cured with UV light. In particular, the combination of the two varnishes enables the printing of highly diverse patterns. The ratio of high-viscosity and low-viscosity components can be freely adjusted in line with the required results and printing parameters. Furthermore, hot foil stamping in conjunction with UVcurable screen printing continues to be in demand. This approach achieves brilliant high-gloss metallic effects comparable to precious metals – but is considerably more costefficient.

printing is used for custom decorations

coatings at Glasstec 2018. These products

on beverage bottles, plus for high-quality fragrance bottles and decorative objects. Flat-bed printers are employed for flat glass. Further applications include advertising materials and interior design (e.g. kitchens and furniture). In addition, the ability to print on the second surface is attractive for industrial customers, for example for the manufacture of touchscreens. In this context, the combination of screen and digital printing is increasingly important – designs can be produced via digital printing, for instance, followed by a blocking layer applied via screen printing.

can be leveraged to prime, finish or protect high-quality digital prints. In the case of Mara Shield UV-CGL inks, they can be harnessed for roller-coating large areas of glass. A broad choice of colours creates opportunities to match customer’s desired shades from Pantone, RAL, HKS and other colour systems – making these inks particularly interesting for kitchen and furniture component suppliers. Additionally, Marabu’s new Special Primer P4 significantly improves adhesion of UV-curable colours on glass (for screen as well as digital printing). This can be applied manually or by means of a spray system. Depending on the ink, it is also possible to deliver greater adhesion on metal and plastic substrates.

A special primer for glass Marabu also presented its Mara Shield liquid

Digital printing on glass At this year’s Glasstec, Marabu drew attention to the broad range of applications for UV curable digital direct printing. Inkjet inks can be employed for custom decorative elements on flat and container glass. Marabu’s Ultra Jet DUV-C is suitable for printing diverse glasses and bottles. Direct
