‘Curtainraiser’ Dear friends from the Printing Industry: Greetings! Industrial Printing, both digital and analogue, is a fiercely developing industry. As the industry evolved and printing began to be carried out on substrates comprising products of the Industrial Revolution (including metal, glass, ceramic, wood and plastic) the term ‘industrial’ was prefixed to printing. We introduce you to the Industrial Print magazine, a name inspired by the development that substrate and size are no longer restrictions for this division of the print industry. In textile printing a digital machine prints in rolls with each roll bearing a personalized design. This is a similar case to tiles which can be personalized as a result of being digitally printed, which explains the ‘tiling’ function as we understand it. Recently a Dutch friend shared pictures of his washroom which was literally flushed with 3D printed tiles, giving the amazing feeling of dipping into a swimming pool with fishes for company. Or should I call it an aquarium? Digitally printing on metal, glass, ceramic, wood and plastic is now a breeze. This is also true for newspaper, magazine and journal printing where digital has made great strides. The challenge for printers now is to stretch their imagination and creativity to horizons previously thought impossible. Speaking of which, it would be gross injustice not to mention the levels to which creativity can be extended when it comes to the 3D printing arena. In the light of these exciting developments in Industrial Printing, we are convinced of the immense and prudent need of the Industrial Print magazine, digital or otherwise, for the Malaysian print community. So what extras do we have lined up for you? In addition to dedicated sections catering to the above-mentioned areas of printing, there would be success stories, interviews, views, analyses and in the long run analytical data too. You have my assurance that Industrial Print will reach the far corners of Malaysia. This is owing to our large database built over 20 years through our signature events - IPMEX and PRINT TECHNOLOGY. Yes, data is updated every year with recurring visitors showing up! I am confident too that magazine readership will not be confined to Malaysia but expand to the Asia-Pacific region as well. Industrial Print will kick-off as a Quarterly with both print and electronic editions, once every three months. The frequency will be increased based on the responses and feedback from our esteemed readers. Most importantly, we seek the whole-hearted cooperation of our readers, patrons and advertisers and look forward to enhanced interaction in the near future.

DIGITAL INKJET It is the future. The most rapid growth for 2017-2022 will be in packaging – over 20%

“The most rapid growth for 2017-2022 will be in packaging – over 20% – as inkjet innovation and new business priorities for brands sees manufacturers invest in new press installations” Digital Expert

Key Notes : >

Digital is up from 2.1% of the volume in 2012, and the transition is accelerating to 3.9% of volume by 2022.

> Inkjet is extremely versatile, with multipass traversing heads and single-pass arrays of fixed heads positioned over or beside the print surface. > The development money in inkjet dwarfs all other technology developments

6

August 2017

According to Smithers Pira, in 2017, digital printing accounts for 16.2% of the global print market value and 2.9% of the volume. This is up from 2.1% of the volume in 2012, and the transition is accelerating to 3.9% of volume by 2022. The report also says that Digital (toner and inkjet) process will see the fastest growth across 2017-2022. The previously dominant offset litho will decline in terms of value and Flexography in packaging will have a moderate expansion. Digital print has developed significantly from its introduction in the 1970s for transactional print, with color cut sheet arriving in the mid-1990s. Since then, electrophotography and inkjet have enjoyed the lion’s share of the research and development budgets spent on printing technology, pushing the quality, reliability and productivity of systems forward while at the same time reducing the end-user cost of producing print. This has pushed the adoption of the technology into print service providers and packaging converters, initially because of the variable print capability and the economic benefits of low runs. As more end users invest in the technology, they are identifying new market niches and benefits for print buyers, pushing further adoption. The biggest changes are in inkjet, where the achievable quality has greatly improved, along with the reliability and consistency of the printing. The development money in inkjet dwarfs all other

technology developments in printing and packaging. Single-pass sheetfed and webfed presses are now available and are firmly aimed at most printing applications. Inkjet is becoming mainstream in low-, medium- and high-volume production, as well as proofing and prototyping. It is extremely versatile, with multi-pass traversing heads and single-pass arrays of fixed heads positioned over or beside the print surface – which may not be flat. Wide-format printers have grabbed much of the display market, where highperformance flatbed machines are replacing much screen and litho output. The most rapid growth for 2017-2022 will be in packaging – over 20% – as inkjet innovation and new business priorities for brands sees manufacturers invest in new press installations, particularly for volume printing corrugated. HP has been leading from the front in this race of supremacy with a wide range of products for every conceivable printer’s need. Be it sheetfed or web. Others like Ricoh, Konica Minolta, Xerox, Canon, Kodak and the likes are not way behind too. Even offset machine manufacturers are pouring huge amounts into the digital space, thus showing the significance of the title of this short article. Good for the print consumers and hopefully good for the printers too - yes, only for those who are willing to change!

TEXTILE PRINTING The way forward is digital With digital, the possibilities are endless and every yard you print can be completely customized and personalized. Digital fabric printing is a relatively new technology but now with tons of applications. And the technology driven design process allows immense possibilities. Most commercially available fabric is rotary screen printed and each print run is typically several thousand yards. The high minimums are due to the cost and time required to prepare a unique set of screens, with each color in a design requiring a separate screen. It is here that the advantage of digital printing comes into play, which enables the printer to do very small runs of each design (often even less than a yard). The saviour is inkjet printing technology which was first patented in 1968. In the 1990s, inkjet printers became widely available for paper printing applications. The technology has continued to develop and there are now specialized wide-format printers which can handle a variety of substrates – everything from paper to canvas to vinyl, and of course, fabric.

“Digitally printed fabric will wash and wear the same as any other fabric, although with some types of ink you may see some initial fading in the first wash” - A textile print user

Key Notes : > The possibilities are endless and every yard you print can be completely customized. > The advent of digital printing of textiles has been growing quickly. > Digital inks combined with the available technology, enables a much wider color gamut .

8

August 2017

The inks used in digital printing are formulated specifically for each type of fiber (cotton, silk,

polyester, nylon, etc). During the printing process, the fabric is fed through the printer using rollers and ink is applied to the surface in the form of thousands of tiny droplets. The fabric is then finished using heat and/or steam to cure the ink (some inks also require washing and drying). Digitally printed fabric will wash and wear the same as any other fabric, although with some types of ink you may see some initial fading in the first wash. With digital, the possibilities are endless and every yard you print can be completely customized and personalized. Print fabric with names and dates, for use as quilt blocks, t-shirts, doggy raincoats, pillowcases, etc. Every item in your line can come in a different color. You can also do more practical kinds of customization, like creating sequentially numbered labels. Small runs of fabric can easily be printed for sampling purposes. No more hunting high and low for the perfect print, only to find that it’s no longer available when you need more. No such thing as fabric inventory – with an on-site printer, it’s possible to print fabric on the same day that it will be cut. You can even have a pattern printed directly on the fabric.

Over the years the prices of the printed products too have reduced and are today affordable so to speak considering the personalization extent that you can reach! Industrially speaking, the textile market is a major industry, and the advent of digital printing of textiles has been growing quickly. Available data shows that even after a decade of advances in digital printing technologies for textile, only 2% of the world’s printed textiles are produced digitally and the majority of digital printing on textiles is done today mainly on polyester fabrics using dye sublimation. Estimates put the textile printing to be a $7.5 billion market and is projected to grow more than 34% worldwide, providing outstanding opportunities in the digital realm. Companies like Fujifilm, Sun Chemical, Dupont, SPGprints, Marabu, JKGroup and Sensient are investing heavily on inks for the digital textile printing industry. On the equipment side, EFI and Epson are developing new partnerships with equipment manufacturers through acquisitions, with EFI purchasing Reggiani and forming EFI Reggiani and Epson acquiring Robustelli. This is leading to further developments, such as EFI’s VUTEk FabriVU series. For those in the printing and packaging industry, it would be interesting to know

that Bobst, a leading supplier of equipment and services to packaging and label manufacturers, and Radex, a start-up company owned by multiple stakeholders with a long track record in the field of DOD inkjet digital printing, have opened a joint venture, Mouvent, a new company in Switzerland, focussed on digital print using pioneering digital technology. The company is promising a new standard in

inkjet label production cost and quality, in ink pricing, head durability, quality, and machine performance. Its first machine that has been launched is an innovative, highly productive digital printer for textiles, which prints with up to eight colours, and there is a full product pipeline to follow. The innovative cluster design is the base building block for all systems, current and in development. Colorjet India Ltd, the largest manufacturer of digital inkjet printers in India, has very recently launched a model named Aurajet - a dye sublimation textile printer which is getting rave reviews from industry pundits. The run length size alone is not the only consideration today for a textile printer. The decision to choose digital depends on the color required - the latest digital inks combined with the available technology, enables a much wider color gamut than is possible with conventional printing, enabling deep and rich colors. Furthermore, digital printing allows unlimited number of colors. Just turn back and have a look at the colours in the fabric print on the cover of this prelude issue. Just for the readers information, the cover of this prelude issue is actually digitally printed on HP Indigo machine using 6 color printing resulting in these extraordinarily vibrant colors.

LARGE FORMAT 3D PRINTING Massivit: The a company dealing with super large format 3D printers

One of the fastest growing printing technology with amazing future ahead is that of 3D printing and it’s ever increasing application in manufacturing, medical, industry and sociocultural sectors is rather interesting. The earliest application of technology was in the tool-room end of the manufacturing spectrum, rapid prototyping being one of them, and its mission was to reduce the lead time and cost of developing prototypes of new parts and devices, which was earlier only done with subtractive tool-room methods such as CNC milling, turning, and precision grinding.

“Massivit based out of Israel and focuses on increasing the “WOW” factor for Brands, Retail and Promotion. Many were wowed by the products displayed and being printed live at the last Drupa 2016. ” Bernard Sun, Massivit

Key Notes : > One:1, a supercar that utilizes many components that were 3D printed. > oyal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet flew with printed parts. > Users firmly believe the new amazing large format 3D print technology will change the print and display landscape as we know it.

August 2017

In the 2010s, 3D printing entered production to a much greater extent. 3D printing of food is being developed by squeezing out food, layer by layer, into three-dimensional objects. A large variety of foods are appropriate candidates, such as chocolate and candy, and flat foods such as crackers, pasta, and pizza. 3D printing has entered the world of clothing, with fashion designers experimenting with 3D-printed bikinis, shoes, and dresses. Fabrics now are being

A 3D Printed leopard by Massivit

printed commercially the digital way. In commercial production Nike is using 3D printing to prototype and manufacture the 2012 Vapor Laser Talon football shoe for players of American football. The technology has come to the point where companies are printing consumer grade eyewear with on-demand custom fit and styling (although they cannot print the lenses). In cars, trucks, and aircraft, it is beginning to

transform both unibody and fuselage design and production and powertrain design and production. For example: In early 2014, Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg announced the One:1, a supercar that utilizes many components that were 3D printed. Urbee is the name of the first car in the world car mounted using the technology 3D printing (its bodywork and car windows were “printed”). In 2015, a Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet flew with printed parts. The United States Air Force has begun to work with 3D printers, and the Israeli Air Force has also purchased a 3D printer to print spare parts. In 2017, GE Aviation revealed that it had used design for 3D printing to create a helicopter engine with 16 parts instead of 900, with great potential impact on reducing the complexity of supply chains. Surgical uses of 3D printing-centric therapies have a history beginning in the mid1990s with anatomical modeling for bony reconstructive surgery planning. Patientmatched implants were a natural extension of this work, leading to truly personalized implants that fit one unique individual. Virtual planning of surgery and guidance using 3D

printed, personalized instruments have been applied to many areas of surgery including total joint replacement and craniomaxillofacial reconstruction with success. The hearing aid and dental industries are expected to be the biggest area of future development using the custom 3D printing technology. In March 2014, surgeons in Swansea used 3D printed parts to rebuild the face of a motorcyclist who had been seriously injured in a road accident. 3D printing, and open source 3D printers in particular, are the latest technology making inroads into the classroom. In the last several years 3D printing has been intensively used by in the cultural heritage field for preservation, restoration and dissemination purposes. Many Europeans and North American Museums have purchased 3D printers and actively recreate missing pieces of their relics. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum have started using their 3D printers to create museum souvenirs that are available in the museum shops. Dealing with super large format 3D printers is a company called Massivit based out of Israel and focuses on increasing the “WOW”

factor for Brands, Retail and Promotion. Many were wowed by the products displayed and being printed live at last Drupa 2016. According to Bernard Sun, Regional Director (Asia Pacific & Japan) of the company “Noticeable over the years more and more top brands have incorporate 3D into their Design and Retail, as they experience large format 3D printing not only looks impressive but inspires fantastic results” he said. Never has the designer had the opportunity to create customized objects and have their files outputted to the exact detail and size imaginable. The solution opens up endless possibilities for 3D visual solutions, utilizing materials that can be displayed internally and externally ideal for Branding, Signage, Theming, Staging and Pattern Making. Users firmly believe the new amazing large format 3D print technology will change the print and display landscape as we know it. Massivit 3D Printing Technologies recently announced that its business has grown by almost 350% since the launch of its Massivit 3D Printer at drupa 2016. The exponential success has seen the company secure over 30 customers from 15 countries on five continents. Since the launch of the flagship Massivit 1800, the company has also grown its worldwide distributor network, now 25-strong, to provide full customer service support and training. Our endeavour through this magazine will be to bring to you actual user comments and experiences.

GLASS PRINTING Another source of revenue for printers Possibilities of customization creates value addition to Printers

“Glass being one of the most contemporary and desirable building materials used in modern architecture with usage in the form of windows, glass roofs and glass doors, architects and designers are eager to use this medium more generally for decorative purposes - Roger Watson

Key Notes : > The most prominent trend in UV-LED inkjet printing onto glass is, as usual with all things digital, personalization and customization. > Artists also making a statement by adding glass printing to their repertoire. They are printing on dining room tables, coffee tables, shower doors, glass counter tops, glass plates and other items.

12

August 2017

In the last few years, advances in UV digital printing technology have opened up a world of new opportunities for shops willing to experiment with the various types of media options available to them. One of these areas includes the process of printing directly onto glass, a non absorbent surface. In the past, imaging onto glass was mainly achieved through painting, etching and screen printing but now the same results are being attained faster and more economically using UV-cure inkjet flatbed printer technology. It is now possible to have graphics vibrantly rendered with glass printing such as mirrors, windows, signage, glassware and awards.

Print service providers who produce awards, trophy and recognition pieces have been looking into inkjet UV-LED curing technology to create unique and colorful awards. They are no longer limited to laser-etched names and logos with photographic inclusions. Now, the award can be fully made of glass and include smooth color gradient images and logos. The versatility of UV-LED systems has also open the doors to many more products that go beyond glass that the award maker wasn’t previously able to create with etching. Glass Christmas ornaments are being printed with family pictures, company logos and personalized messages.

Glass printing is now standing out as a way to give a premium look to graphics in retail merchandising and the practical benefits include elimination of time and extra materials needed to mount printed film to a glass surface and one gets a superior image compared to a mounted film too. The most prominent trend in UV-LED inkjet printing onto glass is, as usual with all things digital, personalization and customization. UV-LED (Light Emitting Diode) inkjet is also less process-intensive because it does not require any post-print process such as high-heat curing resulting in much shorter turn around time.

Glass being one of the most contemporary and desirable building materials used in modern architecture with usage in the form of windows, glass roofs and glass doors, architects and designers are eager to use this medium more generally for decorative purposes. Artists also making a statement by adding glass printing to their repertoire. They are printing on dining room tables, coffee tables, shower doors, glass counter tops, glass plates and other items to display and sell their art, combining function with artistic expression.
