Australian Made Campaign is calling on all Aussies

With various restrictions still in place around the country, the Australian Made Campaign is calling on all Aussies to remember the people behind their purchases and show their continued support for Aussie manufacturers and growers by looking for the green and gold kangaroo logo.

Australian Made Chief Executive Ben Lazzaro said it continued to be a challenging time for local makers and growers, with many states recently experiencing various levels of lockdown.

“With continued COVID-related disruptions, many local businesses are hurting. By calling on Australians to buy Australian, consumers can be sure that their products will not only be made to some of the highest quality and safety standards in the world, they will also help to deliver certainty for local growers and manufacturers, creating local jobs and economic activity whilst strengthening our local manufacturing capabilities. Our support is key to ensure these businesses not only survive but thrive into the future,” said Mr Lazzaro.

Approximately 13 million people have been in some form of lockdown in recent weeks, with different stay-at-home orders in place in South Australia, Victoria and parts of New South Wales.

“Australians are aware of the value that buying Australian brings to the economy. Choosing locally manufactured goods and locally grown products helps to support our local communities and support Aussie jobs. As a result, people are starting to think more in terms of value than simply product price.”

According to Roy Morgan Research, almost all Australians (99%) are aware of the Australian Made logo and 92% trust the trademark certification as an identifier of genuinely Australian Made products. 97% of Australians associate the logo with the support of local jobs and employment opportunities, 95% with safe and highquality products, 89% with the use of ethical labour and 78% with sustainability.

Mr Lazzaro said, “The best way to support our local makers and growers around the country, is to identify Aussie products by looking for the green and gold kangaroo logo – the brand the nation trusts.”

AUSTRALIAN MADE City of Joondalup reinforces its support for local manufacturers

The City of Joondalup has reinforced its commitment to local manufacturers, officially joining the Australian Made Campaign as a Campaign Supporter – the first local government in Western Australia to do so.

Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ben Lazzaro, said through the partnership, the City of Joondalup has pledged to support the activities of Australian manufacturers and growers in its municipality.

“Australian Made is thrilled to partner with The City of Joondalup,” said Mr Lazzaro. “The City has chosen to leverage the power of the Australian Made logo to actively demonstrate its support for local industry.”

Located 25 kilometres north of the Perth CBD, the City of Joondalup is one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. It is home to 53,000 jobs in diverse industries including strategic growth sectors of digital media, cybersecurity, engineering, and medical technologies.

“The pandemic has brought the many benefits of buying Australian Made into sharp focus, and this renewed focus has consumers and businesses exercising their preference for Aussie products more than ever. This pro-Australian sentiment also presents an opportunity for Aussie manufacturers to expand their markets both at home and abroad. As Australia’s only registered country of origin certification trademark, the logo is the true mark of Aussie authenticity and is central to the domestic and export strategies of many Joondalup businesses,” said Mr Lazzaro.

At the recent Future Proofing Joondalup Business Forum, Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob recognised the power of the Australian Made logo and noted the partnership would help showcase Joondalup’s manufacturing capabilities, both in Australia and around the world.

“I am proud to announce that our city is the first local government in WA to become a Campaign Supporter of the Australian Made Campaign,” said Mayor Jacob. “Due to the impact of COVID-19, there has been a significant upswing in demand for Australian made products. We know that while some of Joondalup’s businesses are leveraging this opportunity for domestic sales and exports, it’s an opportunity for more local businesses to get on board the iconic gold and green kangaroo triangle, Australia’s most recognised and trusted country of origin brand.”

Recent Roy Morgan research revealed trust in the iconic Australian Made kangaroo logo is at an all-time high, with 92% of Australians confident products displaying the logo are made in Australia. Almost all Australians (99%) recognise the green and gold Australian Made logo, with 97% associating it with the support of local jobs and employment opportunities, 95% with safe and highquality products, 89% with the use of ethical labour and 78% with sustainability.

GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY, EVEN BETTER FOR YOUR BUSINESS.

Purchasing locally made equipment provides numerous benefits for your business and this logo guarantees you the very best advice, equipment, service and support. Whilst lower cost materials handling and vibratory equipment from overseas may initially seem an attractive proposition, it is ultimately false economy. The ability to work closely with us during every phase of the project coupled with quick turnaround, quality and reliability are just some of the benefits. Plus the opportunity to easily add to or modify years later as production needs change, far outweighs any price difference. In terms of return on investment, there is simply no comparison.

Australian Made helps Aussies under lockdown

At a time when millions of people across the country are doing it tough under varying degrees of lockdown, the Australian Made Campaign is shouting out to Aussies to remember that they can make a real difference to the lives of other Australians by thinking about the people behind their purchases and looking for the green-and-gold kangaroo, which will help to support Aussie manufacturers and growers.

Ben Lazzaro, Chief Executive of Australian Made, said the different lockdown levels across the states continues to pose significant challenges to local growers and makers.

“With continued COVID-related disruptions, many local businesses are hurting. By calling on Australians to buy Australian, consumers can be sure that their products will not only be made to some of the highest quality and safety standards in the world, they will also help to deliver certainty for local growers and manufacturers, creating local jobs and economic activity while strengthening

our local manufacturing capabilities. Our support is key to ensure these businesses not only survive but thrive into the future,” said Mr Lazzaro.

About 13 million Australian have been subjected to some form of lockdown in the last month or so, forcing people across Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales to stay in their homes.

“Australians are aware of the value that buying Australian brings to the economy. Choosing locally manufactured goods and locally grown products helps to support our local communities and support Aussie jobs. As a result, people are starting to think more in terms of value than simply product price.”

Almost all Australians – 99% of us – recognise the Australian Made logo, according to Roy Morgan Research. The pollster also found out that 92% of Australians trust the trademark certification as an identifier of authentic Australianmade products, 97% of us equate the logo with the support of local jobs, 95% of us associate it with high-quality products that are safe, 89% of us see it as an indicator of ethical work practices, and 78% of us associate it with sustainability.

“The best way to support our local makers and growers around the country,” said Mr Lazzaro, “is to identify Aussie products by looking for the green-andgold kangaroo logo – the brand the nation trusts.”

Meat processors use 3D printing to manufacture parts

The Australian Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC) is working with Markforged and Konica Minolta to establish a world-first, industryowned additive manufacturing (3D printing) service model. This will help red meat processors across Australia print equipment parts, revolutionising equipment maintenance and ensuring continuous supply of meat products.

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, has been around for about a decade. However, new uses for the technology are constantly being discovered. This led AMPC to investigate its potential in meat processing facilities.

In a high-volume environment like a processing plant, parts such as bolts and rollers can wear or break. As in any industry, time is money, and if a part fails the result is lost productivity and expensive down-time until the part is sourced and replaced. With 3D printing, the industry can benefit from part replacement, creation, and refinement.

Chris Taylor, CEO, Australian Meat Processor Corporation, said: “Meat processors rely on a multitude of equipment, with multiple components. Even a small component failure can be a costly exercise. The ability to simply print a replacement part could drastically reduce downtime and minimise the need to wait for parts, reducing the chance of supply being at risk.”

Matthew Hunter, Innovation Product Marketing Manager, Konica Minolta, said: “The need for sovereign capability for the Australian supply chain, coupled with Australian government support for local food and beverage manufacturing, has resulted in organisations looking to adopt innovative practices. Konica Minolta Australia is proud to partner with AMPC in getting this world-first capability off the ground.”

Richard Elving, Director of Sales Asia-Pacific, Markforged, said: “We are very excited about bringing Markforged’s Digital Forge to AMPC and AMPC’s members to support maintenance, repair and operation needs. Supply chain issues can be costly and time-sensitive, and with these tools in place, AMPC will provide a competitive advantage to its members that enables processing facilities to react quickly to solve problems right on the manufacturing floor.”

The collaboration between the Australian Meat Processor Corporation, Konica Minolta and MarkForged involves a three-year, multifaceted program so that these benefits can be realised at meat processing plants across Australia. The program will see two mobile, non-metal industrial 3D printers (Markforged X7 carbon fiber 3D printers) shipped to Australian processing plants.

Processing staff will be trained to use them so they can assess whether buying a permanent unit would be a good investment. The units will remain on site for four to eight weeks before rotating to another plant. These units can create pre-metal prototypes for assessment as well as producing non-metal parts. Konica Minolta will provide on-site support to help meat processors understand and leverage the technology.

As part of the program, a metal printing 3D industrial unit (metal X system) will be set-up at Konica Minolta's Sydney location dedicated for red meat processing part manufacturing. Plastic prototypes made at each processing location can be sent to this hub to be made out of stainless steel and other metals in as few as 24 hours. A red meat 3D parts database library will ensure all parts are quality controlled.

Matthew Hunter said: “When it comes to meat processing, there are a number of challenges for equipment maintenance. This includes the use of old equipment with limited spare part availability and the need to produce custom parts. 3D printing helps address these challenges. Through the database, AMPC’s member organisations will have access to intellectual property to expediate and streamline their repairs processes.”

With the ability to rapid prototype with 3D printing and produce one-off 3D parts, meat processors will also be able to modify equipment and/or equipment components to suit their own specific needs by making changes to tooling, fixtures, brackets, and actuators. Currently many of these modifications, customisations and consolidations simply cannot be done.

Chris Taylor said: “The processing sector is part of an ecosystem that performs best when all parts are optimised. Although established and dedicated for Australian red meat processors, AMPC will make the 3D printing hub available for other Australian food, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors to evaluate their needs and opportunities for 3D printing within their supply chains.”

Good Vibrations

materials handling vibratory equipment, truck and industrial vibrators and flow aid devices for over four decades now.

A prominent provider for the food, pharmaceutical and allied industries, their impressive client list includes Arnott’s, Cadburys, Ingham’s, Pepsico and Nestlé.

For the uninitiated, every single packaged dry ingredient on a supermarket shelf – from chickpeas, to spices, rice, pasta, confectionary, or soap powder - will have passed through a vibratory feeder. Whether you need to align, sort, spread, sprinkle, size, separate, meter, deliver, blend, weigh or screen your product, Enmin can bring decades of knowledge and ample expertise to the job.

“We are driven as a solution-based business,” Anthony says. “A typical example of when we get involved is, Mars will get a customer complaint that they are getting too many broken M&Ms in their packets. That will go from Marketing to Engineering where they’ll say: ‘Can you guys come up with a solution for this?’ Next thing we’re getting a phone call from Mars saying can you build us a vibratory piece of equipment that allows the rightsize pieces to get into the packet and the wrong-size pieces to be ejected. Whether they’re oversized or undersized – we want them out. That’s where we step in and start building a machine for them.”

How the story began…

Anthony’s father, a mechanical engineer, started a business over 40 years ago that specialised in equipment for the mining sector. “One of the areas they got involved in was a little bit of vibration,” Anthony shares. “Dad soon realised there weren’t many people in Australia with any expertise in this.”

After his company had been running for about 10 years, Anthony’s mother was fed-up. With so few mines in Victoria, her husband was constantly travelling all over the country visiting work sites, leaving her at home with two children.

“My sister and I were young at the time, and she said to him: ‘You better figure this out as this isn’t going to work long term.’”

This led to Anthony’s father compiling a list of industries that were based on the eastern seaboard of Australia, those that used vibration and those, ultimately, that appeared to be recession proof.

“He came to the conclusion that the food industry was a good avenue to go into, and so he started to target this industry,” Anthony explains.

And so Enmin came to be. Originally called Engineering and Mining Supplies, it was shortened to Enmin once its founder changed focus embarking on what was to become, and continues to be, a very exciting journey.

Time to move…

Astoundingly, Enmin’s recent relocation has seen them tripling their available space. Now occupying a 2642 square metre area, Anthony couldn’t be happier with the new digs.

“With this premises… when I described two years ago what my ultimate would be, it would be to have a factory split into two, so a factory with manufacturing in it,” he explains. “And then an area for clean assembly and storage of parts. Now to find a factory like that near impossible – but we have found that here.”

On a further positive note, the sales, marketing and administration offices are sectioned off individually, making it all the safer for employees eventually returning to work post Covid.

What lies ahead…

The trailblazing firm has continued to evolve, implementing a new strategy in what many businesses deem a precarious landscape. “You need to be innovative with your design process,’ Anthony says, revealing that the company is now working on creating machinery that doesn’t just handle one, but 50 different products.

“You have to make sure the equipment you’re designing is dynamic enough to handle everything. That is what people are coming to know us for now. We have a back catalogue of designs that we can draw upon, add to and bolt together to create new, unique systems. We’re hoping to double our turnover in the next five years.”

“Our next phase is to do more combinations of these standard pieces to make up a complete system. So, our next revenue growth is going to based upon standard systems using pre-designed modules that already exist in our portfolio.”

The company specialises in two types of vibration, electromagnetic and electromechanical. “If you asked me what the heartbeat of Enmin was, and what makes us really unique, not only in this country, but globally, it is our electromagnetic drives.”

“Rather than get these from an overseas supplier and manipulating them into what we want them to be, Dad made the decision that we would develop our own.”

“The product… there’s a sound that they make. When I hear the sound it actually makes me a little bit emotional! I’ve heard it for so many years, I walk into a factory and I’m like a bee to a honey pot. I start walking around looking for where they are! It’s a unique sound and a unique product and one that we will always manufacture.”

With his passion and commitment to his business so evident, it’s clear that Anthony will never be one to rest on his laurels. Giving us a taste of what customers can expect in the future, he says: “We’ve got some exciting product releases coming out in the next 12 months, based on pre-existing systems, that will showcase all of Enmin’s years of experience.”
