Complementary Medicines Group – Owning its niche

Supported by St.George Bank, Complementary Medicines Group (CMG) has adapted to the changing landscape of Australian manufacturing, carving out a profitable niche by continually spotting opportunities to innovate, and investing in them.

C

raig Fallshaw has been involved in pharmaceuticals manufacture since childhood, but his path to his current position, as co-founder and CEO of CMG, has not been straightforward. As a teenager he started working at his grandfather’s business, an early supplier to Blackmores. On leaving school, however, he chose a different road, working as a chef and travelling the world before returning to the company some years later. Fallshaw’s 15 years with the family firm saw its highs and lows. The company took a hit when it lost the Blackmores account, but Fallshaw worked hard to bring it back to growth; in 2003, another business’s assets were acquired and rolled into a new venture, Sphere Healthcare. And then in 2009 new partners came onboard, and decided Fallshaw was no longer required. “I got the sack,” he recalls. Such a setback might have been debilitating, but for Fallshaw it would provide the spur to go his own way, set-

ting him on track to where he is now. “I stumbled into a mate of mine who’d just sold his family business and had all this money,” he says. “I said ‘I’ve got a really good idea, but I haven’t got any coin’. And he said ‘Well let’s go halves.” That mate was Geoff Ireland, and together they established CMG in 2010. Starting out with just Fallshaw on a laptop in a friend’s warehouse

in Brookvale, the company today employs 87 staff across two sites in Warriewood, NSW. CMG specialises in contract manufacturing and product development for the complementary medicine, pharmaceuticals and food industries. According to Fallshaw, its success has stemmed from repeatedly finding ways to fill a niche. “Manufacturing in Australia has changed so much in the last 10 years,” he says. “And what fell out of those changes is that start-ups and SMEs are no longer a fit for Australian large-scale manufacturing so, SMEs are my bread and butter. We’ve been lucky that one of them is now a multi-hundred-million-dollar company. They grew with us; it’s been a really good partnership. But when they were starting up, they had the same problems all my clients have. Most manufacturers wouldn’t give them any service, wouldn’t return phone calls, wouldn’t run small batches, didn’t really care. So we’ve done this model where we do all the hard stuff for them.” What this means is that CMG covers the whole process, from import of raw materials, through product development, to delivery of the finished goods. In addition, CMG helps clients overcome a lot of the technical and regulatory hurdles – a big value-add in a sector with lots of start-ups that have limited industry know-how. Fallshaw attributes his success to two things. The first is his three decades of industry experience, which enables him to find solutions that others just don’t see. The second is a rigorous focus on customer service. “It’s not hard,” he says. “I have five bullet points I give all the staff, and say ‘If you do these things, we’ve won half the battle.’ Simple things like getting back to people before they chase you. If you promised them X at Y time and you haven’t done it, email and tell them. Really simple stuff that really clever people don’t think sometimes.” Another key factor, according to Fallshaw, has the influence of his business partner Geoff Ireland: “He owns half the business. He plays the bad cop when we have a fight with someone. He gives me counsel. And he gives me access to funds. My ability to access capital would be severely limited without him as a partner. So that’s of immense value.” It was Ireland who also established CMG’s relationship with St.George Bank, which Fallshaw says has been crucial to the business’s growth: “I reckon the two best things that St.George have done would be the master asset finance facility (MAFF)

It’s been instrumental.” That relationship continues to this day, with St.George currently assisting CMG’s latest investments in capability: “We’re putting in a smart bed machine, which will go on the MAFF when I get the final invoice in July.” St.George Bank is exceptionally proud of CMG’s success and is excited about the future prospects of the business. take advantage of whatever opportunities are out there, such as government grants or R&D opportunities.” Looking to the future, Fallshaw sees his company maintaining its winning strategy of finding niche opportunities other manufacturers might not pursue: “I’ve got a fouryear plan at the moment, which is to get to a certain turnover and EBIT, and do things that no-one else does. Effervescent tablets, and some other cool stuff. Basically to stick in my niche, to own my niche.” One such opportunity lies in personalised nutrition, the latest big trend in vitamins. “Basically, the consumer goes to the website and they pick whatever vitamins they want,” Fallshaw explains. “That file comes out of there, into my machine. It picks it; it puts that it’s your prescription; it puts the brand name or logo, your name and date of birth, all the numbers and details. It makes up a roll of 30 sachets, puts it in a box. We print a little leaflet and put it in the box, and it goes in the post to you “And the idea is you subscribe. Every brand I’ve mentioned it to has been really excited because it’s really different and no-one does it. When smart choices lead to healthy finances

ith a new Federal Government, the end of the financial year looming, a changing economy and rising interest rates, we look at the implications, how to hedge for the future and the various ways to get finance for your business in the best way possible. The Labor Government has an electoral platform of National Reconstruction and Made in Australia, promising to create a $15 billion fund to provide loans, guarantees and equity for the advancement of sovereign capability and regional development. Both major parties committed to ensuring national security, with less reliance upon overseas manufacturers for critical goods – a lesson learnt from the recent global pandemic, which exposed many shortcomings of the retreat of manufacturing in Australia. Although the incoming government has committed to a Budget in October, the current policies encouraging upgrade and replacement of business assets remain in place until 30 June 2023. This leaves only one month to gain advantage this financial year by replacing, upgrading and improving equipment, vehicles and machinery. By writing off the whole outlay as a tax deduction on 30 June – if it results in a tax loss – get a refund of taxes paid in previous years. Throughout June, the purchase of business assets (new or used, up to $5B) results in an immediate deduction of 100% write off. Known as ‘Temporary full expensing’, this incentive is available on an unlimited number of purchases. Losses in the 2022 year can be offset against tax previously paid – creating a cash refund, or ‘Loss carryback’. Financing the purchase of equipment smooths cash flow. Doing it now also guarantees a fixed rate, timed to perfection prior to expected further interest rate rises. As we have seen, rates began to rise already several months ago in response to money markets’ expectations for the future, something which often occurs long before central banks

increase official rates. To date, the rises have been modest, and it is anyone’s guess how much they will continue to increase. You can, however, add certainty by financing your purchases now. Experience has shown that financiers often compete for business in the period leading to the end of the financial year. Equipment finance agreements almost always carry a fixed rate, giving certainty of cost and cashflow. Although variable rates can be obtained, they are rare and usually for longer terms then 5 years. As an example, we usually use the best rate for cars and trucks. At the time of writing, the best rate on offer stood at about 5.75%. Many businesses need a broad variety of insurances, often expensive and ill timed, resulting in mayhem when premiums fall due. Insurance premium funding can be an inexpensive way of smoothing cashflow across the year. Different classes of insurance and policies can be added together and sourced from a variety of insurers or brokers as per customer’s choice, with the total amount spread over 6-10 months. The interest rate is low, with usually only a small setup fee and in most cases no requirement for director guarantees. Through this method, you can add Workers Compensation, Business Interruption, premises, contents and motor vehicle policies together, finance them with one monthly payment and employ your capital for better use elsewhere. Applying for finance has recently become somewhat simpler. Previously, it was necessary to have up to date financial reports and tax returns to make a finance application. Things, however, have changed a great deal. The clash of technology and decreased reliance on human input has revolutionised equipment finance in many ways, including the decision-making process. There is a vast array of information available for credit reporting, making lenders adopt a ‘one size fits all’ approach within parameters: • Length of GST registration (usually ranging between 2 and 5 years) • Home ownership or a 20% deposit • A defined range of goods (motor vehicles, yellow goods, construction site equipment, etc.) Although this has made a large difference to the way in which finance applications are made, it comes with pros and cons. On the positive side, we have the speed and efficiency of settlement for those who tick all the boxes. On the negative, we have those who fall outside the criteria. The reason for a knock back could be that business ownership has changed, the goods being purchased

do not fit the matrix, or even that there may have been a small telephone bill overlooked several years ago, which has made its way into a credit report. Happily, there is a wide and ever-increasing number of lenders who are constantly looking for niches – older equipment, specialised industries, even new business start-ups. Reserve Bank goes hard in fight against inflation

T

he Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has joined other major central banks, including the US Federal Reserve and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, in going harder in the fight against inflation. On Tuesday, 7 June 2022, the RBA delivered a rate hike of 50 basis points, taking the cash rate to 0.85%. It follows a 25-basis point rate hike in May, which kicked off the RBA’s tightening cycle after headline inflation cracked 5.1% per annum in the March quarter. This most recent rate hike is the biggest in 22 years. The consecutive monthly rate rises more than fully unwind the 65 basis points of emergency rate cuts the RBA implemented at the start of the pandemic. These back-to-back hikes, totalling 75 basis points, are the biggest in a two-month period since December 1994. This hike means the cash rate is back above its pre-COVID level of 0.75%, as observed in February of 2020, just before the pandemic swept the country. On a backdrop of persistent high inflation, a strong labour market and solid economic growth, the Reserve Bank is clearly eager to quickly wind back emergency policy settings. With the RBA flagging last month that more rate rises were likely, this recent rate hike is no surprise. Our Group view was 40 basis points, although in recent weeks we had been signalling to customers the risk was of a 50 basis point move. The consensus view of economists was for 40 basis points and interest-rate markets only had a 54% probability attached to a 50-basis-point hike. We see the rate hike of 50 basis points as the appropriate decision, given the potent backdrop of elevated inflation, strong economic growth and an extremely low rate of unemployment. The danger is that inflation remains sticky. Inflation would have been harder to tame if the RBA failed to take strong action. The RBA is nervous about elevated inflation pushing up inflation expectations, noting in the minutes from the May meeting that ‘it would

be more difficult to return inflation to the target if the inflation psychology were to shift in an enduring way’. Since the RBA last met in May, jobs data has revealed the unemployment rate has fallen further to its lowest level in almost 48 years, currently sitting at 3.9%. Inflation expectations have ramped up again to a record pace of just under 5%. Economic activity data has also revealed an economic expansion continuing solidly in the March quarter, despite the Omicron wave and weather disruptions. Official wages data has remained slow to accelerate, with the topic barely receiving mention in RBA’s statement announcing the rate hike. Moreover, a consideration of other information sources, such as the trends in business surveys and feedback from liaison surveys, suggests it is only a matter of time before the premier measure of wages growth (the wage price index) picks up considerably. The need to act harder via the larger-than-expected move and the details in the statement suggest the RBA is becoming more worried about the strength of inflation. RBA’s statement explains that nearterm inflation is likely to be higher than expected a month ago because of higher electricity, gas and petrol prices. In the May Statement on Monetary Policy, the RBA forecast a peak in annual headline inflation at 5.9% later this year, with underlying inflation forecast to peak at 4.6% later this year. The latest statement suggests the RBA now expects inflation to peak even higher. Indeed, in a recent interview, the Governor said he expects inflation to peak near 7% at the end of the year. To reflect this, we have also upgraded our inflation trajectory for this year and next, expecting the peak in the annual inflation rate to occur late this year near 7.0%, before it gradually declines over next year. The RBA too, expects inflation will decline to the 2%-3% target range in 2023, as the global supply problems are resolved, and commodity prices stabilise. It is not expected that inflation will return to the band until late 2023.

So, what’s next? The RBA’s more aggressive stance and the revised outlook for inflation opens the door for another 50-basis point hike at the RBA’s next meeting in July. Indeed, at 0.85%, the cash rate is still providing stimulus to the economy and further hikes will be needed to bring inflation back under control. We expect more tightening to follow the move in July. And we believe that interest-rate markets will remain convinced the RBA will need to be more aggressive. The 30-day cash rate futures (as at 14 June) have a cash rate of around 3.75% priced for the end of this year, up from around 2.70% before the latest cash rate announcement. That is, markets expect the RBA to deliver a further 290 basis points of tightening before the conclusion of 2022. These expectations are also reflected in swap and bond rates, especially shorter-dated bond and swap rates. It will take a run, perhaps somewhat prolonged run, of weaker

households, given the level of household indebtedness in Australia. As the RBA highlighted, however, many households have built up large buffers, including paying off their mortgage faster than needed. The household savings ratio is also above the longrun average. Nonetheless, there will be households that will start feeling the stress. Our preliminary forecast is for the cash rate to peak between 2 and 2.50% in the first half of 2023 – a rate that would see the household debt servicing ratio peak above previous peaks but there is greater variability around the peak in the cash rate at this early stage of the hiking cycle. Much will depend on the transmission mechanism of monetary policy to the economy, including via the impact on dwelling prices and share markets. Interestingly, the annual rates of inflation in New Zealand and Australia are closely correlated historically. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) recently hiked

economic data to convince the market that their expectations are too aggressive for 2022. That run of data may not materialise until later this year. How high can the cash rate go? That is a difficult but important question. And one we need to consider and forecast amid heightened uncertainty. As the RBA gets closer to a cash rate that is no longer stimulatory, it will become trickier for the RBA to navigate cash rate policy. At a cash rate of 0.85%, the cash rate is still arguably very stimulatory. St.George anticipates that once the cash rate crosses over 1.50% (in August 2022), the RBA decisions will become more finely balanced. Each successive rate hike will become more restrictive for

back-to-back in 50 basis point moves – something that has not happened since the introduction of the Official Cash Rate in 1999. When the RBNZ began hiking rates in October last year, their inflation rate was lower than the inflation rate in Australia when the RBA started hiking in May 2022. The economies are not identical, but one wonders whether the risks are that inflation proves peskier than the RBA would like. More tightening will slow growth, but because some of the key drivers of inflation are exogenous to Australia (that is, war in Ukraine and China’s zero-COVID strategy), inflation may still take some time to come back into the RBA’s band. industryupdate.com.au

Using intuitive accounting software like Xero, and cloud folders like Fileshare will increase efficiencies and free up time for you to spend on improving your product or service, speaking with customers and strategising. Invest in software training Due to time constraints, small business owners aren’t always across the full capacity of their accounting package. While the constant evolution of accounting software has simplified the bookkeeping task for small business owners, being unable to use the software and or take advantage of all its functions can create inefficiencies. Set some time aside each year for training and assess whether your accounting package is right for you. Write off expenses to maximise tax deductions To reduce your tax liability and maximise deductions at tax time, it’s important to review your debtors, inventories anew d fixed assets, and accordingly write-off any: • Debts that are not recoverable • Stocks that have become obsolete • Assets no longer able to generate revenue. Many expenses can be written off, if they have a legitimate purpose within the business. Commercial rent, equipment and business travel are all able to be written off. There are temporary full expensing rules which may (subject to your business qualifying) allow full write off of depreciating assets. To be eligible, your business must have an aggregated turnover of less than $5 billion or meet an alternative income test visit ato.gov.au An eligibly entity can claim its tax return deduction for the business portion cost of: • Eligible new assets first held, used or installed ready for use between 7.30pm AEDT on 6 October and 30 June 2023. • Eligible second-hand assets where both the asset was first held, used or

installed read for use between 7.30pm AEDT on 6 October and 30 June 2023 and the eligible entity’s aggregated turnover is less than $50 million. Don’ts Don’t overlook key tax due dates Due to heavy workloads and competing priorities, small business owners sometimes struggle to prioritise their tax obligations. However, it’s highly important to prioritise these obligations or you could be hit with ATO penalties and interest. Non-compliance can also flag you with the ATO for a more detailed review or audit. Contact a William Buck advisor or your chartered accountant to understand your tax obligations and prioritise key due dates. Advisers should be able to assist with entering an instalment arrangement with the ATO (if required). Don’t exercise inadequate maintenance of financial records As already noted, it’s important to keep up with your record–keeping year-round. But it’s also important to do so correctly. Proper record–keeping provides an accurate and reliable financial position of a business, enabling the business owner to determine how it’s performing and identifying opportunities to improve. Consider the following: • Lock all accounts relating to the financial year so that date remains accurate, ensuring easy transition into the new financial year, and • Create a separate copy of the accounts and back it up (print key reports like P&L, Balance Sheet and general ledger listing for the financial year and store them securely).

Don’t ignore the importance of investing in expert assistance We’re all looking at ways to minimise our expenses post pandemic. But cutting costs on advisory services is highly inadvisable. Simply do not make an important business decision without consulting a professional because this could result in missed opportunities, non-compliance, a high tax bill or increased commercial risk. Do not overdraw! Finally, and this is a big one, if you have a company and you take money out of the business, make sure the net position of funds introduced less any funds you withdrew is not overdrawn. If you have taken money out of the company, work with your advisors prior to year end to determine whether the amount represents the following: • Salary and wages (report this on your Business Activity Statement) • Dividend (Dividend resolutions and statements to be prepared) • Formal loan agreement in place to meet the Division 7A requirements including the required term and ATO interest rates. If you do not get the treatment correct, you may end up with a deemed dividend that will usually be a poor outcome for the company and yourself. Hidden costs of battery replacements a thing of the past

A

ustralian businesses can potentially save thousands of dollars annually and help them move closer to achieving their carbon emission targets with a simple battery switch, according to a leading battery manufacturer. Procell, the professional batteries arm of leading global manufacturer Duracell, has developed a cost calculator, using Australian specific data, to help businesses identify hidden costs associated with battery replacement and its environmental impact. It is estimated that sectors, such as hospitality, could save up to 44 percent in battery related costs by using the right battery, with the improved efficacies reducing battery replacements,

labor costs and appliance downtime. Duracell Asia B2B senior director Jane Lo, demonstrated the new cost savings calculator at Australia’s premier facilities management conference, Total Facilities 2022 held in Melbourne 10-12 May. “In today’s highly automated, always-on business environment, there’s a heavy reliance on battery operated devices for companies to operate seamlessly. As a result, business expenditure on battery replacements has increased,” Lo explained. “Batteries play an important role in the overall safety, performance, and reliability of many devices whether in a hospitality, security or medical setting. If it’s buying batteries for remote controls, smoke alarms, or sanitiser dispensers, we want to help businesses explore ways to increase efficiencies by replacing batteries less and save more.” Different battery needs High frequency, high drain devices (typically those operating a motor or mechanism such as electric door locks or blood pressure monitors) have different battery needs compared to intermittent low drain devices (such as remote controls or blood glucose meters).

“Taking into account device functionality when selecting batteries can achieve longer-lasting consistent performance, which in turn means fewer replacements and less expenditure,” Lo added. She noted that saving time and labour replacing batteries is particularly critical in the current labour market, with chronic staffing pressure being felt in both healthcare and hospitality, two sectors that also have a high reliance on battery automation.” Procell is a professional range of device specific alkaline batteries designed to minimise battery replacements and reduce the environmental impact of battery waste. he day is coming – some say has already arrived – when artificial intelligence invents things that humans could not. It is not surprising these days to see new inventions that either incorporate or have benefited from artificial intelligence (AI) in some way. What about inventions dreamt up by AI? Should we award a patent to a machine? This is the quandary facing lawmakers around the world, with a test case currently being developed that, as its supporters say, is the first true example of an AI system named as the sole inventor. In commentary published in the journal Nature, two leading academics from UNSW Sydney examine the implications of patents being awarded to an AI entity. Intellectual Property (IP) law specialist Associate Professor Alexandra George and AI expert, Laureate Fellow and Scientia Professor Toby Walsh argue that patent law as it stands is inadequate to deal with such cases and requires legislators to amend laws around IP and patents – laws that have been operating under the same assumptions for hundreds of years. The case in question revolves around a machine called DABUS (Device for the Autonomous Bootstrapping of Unified Sentience) created by Dr Stephen Thaler, who is president and chief executive of US-based AI firm Imagination Engines. Dr Thaler has named DABUS as the inventor of two products: a food container with a fractal surface that helps with insulation and stacking, and a flashing light for attracting attention in emergencies. For a short time in Australia, DABUS looked like it might be recognised as the inventor. In late July 2021, a trial judge accepted Dr Thaler’s appeal against IP Australia’s rejection of the patent application five months earlier. But after the Commissioner of Patents appealed the decision to the Full Court of the Federal Court of Australia, the five-judge panel upheld the appeal, agreeing with the Commissioner that an AI system couldn’t be named the inventor. Associate Professor George says the attempt to have DABUS awarded a patent for the two inventions instantly creates challenges for existing laws that have only ever considered humans or entities comprised of humans as inventors and patent-holders. “Even if we do accept that an AI system is the true inventor, the first big problem is ownership. How do you work out who the owner is? An owner needs to be a legal person, and an AI is not recognised as a legal person,” she says. Ownership is crucial to IP law. Without it there would be little incentive for others to invest in the new inventions to make them a reality. “Another problem with ownership when it comes to AI-conceived inventions, is even if you could transfer ownership

from the AI inventor to a person: is it the original software writer of the AI? Is it a person who has bought the AI and trained it for their own purposes? Or is it the people whose copyrighted material has been fed into the AI to give it all that information?” asks Associate Professor George. Professor Walsh says what makes AI systems so different to humans is their capacity to learn and store so much more information than an expert ever could. One of the requirements of inventions and patents is that the product or idea is novel and useful, not obvious. “There are certain assumptions built into the law that an invention should not be obvious to a knowledgeable person in the field,” Professor Walsh explains. “Well, what might be obvious to an AI won’t be obvious to a human because AI might have ingested all the human knowledge on this topic, way more than a human could, so the nature of what is obvious changes.” Professor Walsh says this isn’t the first time that AI has been instrumental in coming up with new inventions. In the area of drug development, a new antibiotic was created in 2019 – Halicin – that used deep learning to find a chemical compound that was effective against drug-resistant strains of bacteria. “Halicin was originally meant to treat diabetes, but its effectiveness as an antibiotic was only discovered by AI that was directed to examine a vast catalogue of drugs that could be repurposed as antibiotics. There is a mixture of human and machine coming into this discovery.” Professor Walsh says in the case of DABUS, it’s not entirely clear whether the system is truly responsible for the inventions. Change the laws Either way, both authors argue that governing bodies around the world will need to modernise the legal structures that determine whether or not AI systems can be awarded IP protection. They recommend the introduction of a new ‘sui generis’ form of IP law – which they’ve dubbed ‘AI-IP’ – that would be specifically tailored to the circumstances of AI-generated inventiveness. This, they argue, would be more effective than trying to retrofit and shoehorn AI-inventiveness into existing patent laws. Looking forward, after examining the legal questions around AI and patent law, the authors are currently working on answering the technical question of how AI is going to be inventing in the future. Dr Thaler has sought ‘special leave to appeal’ the case concerning DABUS to the High Court of Australia. It remains to be seen whether the High Court will agree to hear it. Variable speed technology has been available in air compressors for over 20 years, yet air operators have clearly not done their sums in calculating capital cost against energy saving benefits and other practical benefits that afford a relatively short payback period. Whilst there is a higher capital cost in Variable Speed Drives (VSD) capable machines, it can be quickly recovered through sustainable energy savings alone. VSD control the compressor to only use as much input energy required to match the demand by the end application at any given time. This means that the compressor motor is working at the minimal load to match the required air demand, saving otherwise wasted energy and placing much less stress on the motor and other components. Other benefits include steady state pressure to the plant with reduced artificial air usage and less wear and tear on the compressor itself and other system components. Nearly all operators would benefit from variable speed drive to control their air compressor’s usage. In the parallel market of air conditioning, inverter (thermostat controlled) technology has been the norm for many years. You would be hard pressed to find or buy fixed speed/fixed temperature air conditioners. Why? Because today’s air conditioners vary output according to applied heat load. This provides both constantly comfortable conditions for people in living and office spaces and significant savings in operating costs. It can’t go without saying that AMW 2022 has taken place during a period of resurgence for Australian manufacturing. The pandemic has reinforced the belief among the general public that a strong manufacturing sector is essential to our country’s future prosperity. The industry has been quick to regroup and rebound from the initial shock of the pandemic. Despite subsequent outbreaks and lockdowns, it has maintained a steady upwards trajectory ever since. AMW covered every aspect of manufacturing technology, from the largest assembly line cutting tools, down to the smallest medical, nanotech and aerospace additive manufacturing applications. State-of-the-art support

systems, software and accessories were also featured. There were six dedicated zones in the show, which included Additive Manufacturing; Australian Manufacturers Pavillion; Machine Tools & Equipment; Manufacturing Solutions; Robotics & Automation; and Weld Solutions. Electronex AMTIL was held after Electronex 2022, a dedicated electronics show, which took place on April 5 and 6 at Rosehill Gardens Function Centre. The show was a success with over 1,000 trade visitors, delegates and exhibitors attending the two day show. Previously only held in Sydney since 1988, the Electronex exhibition will be held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, 10-11 May 2023, and will be co-locating with Austech and Australian Manufacturing Week. Workplace Health & Safety Show The Workplace Health and Safety Show (WHSS), was also a resounding success, with more than 2,000 health and safety decision makers from different industries around Australia converging on Melbourne’s Convention and Exhibition Centre on May 25 and 26, 2022. The show was a live and interactive experience spanning two days and showcased the latest initiatives in the safety industry. Leaders in the sector shared their ideas on how to improve health and safety in workplace

environments. Information was delivered in a personal and interactive manner, via an education series with seminars that are thought-provoking and informative. Participants heard about everything from mental health to changing safety regulations and new processes that will help shape the future of workplace health and safety. Attendees also had the opportunity to try new products and services from over 100 different companies. International Exhibition and Conference Group (IECG) CEO Marie Kinsella said that Victoria is a hub for Australian industry and there is no sign of slowing down. How Gorman-Rupp pump solved blockage issue

The Gorman-Rupp pumps have been extremely popular in difficult wastewater pumping applications.

Their Trafalgar plant did however, have some issues with their wastewater pump. They were running copies of the Gorman-Rupp self-priming pump on their Green Waste and they were attending the pump daily to fix issues with regard to blockages in the pump. On occasions, these issues would cause the well to overflow and require the need for outside contractors to be called in to help deal with the inflow into the well. Another processor who is also running genuine Gorman-Rupp pumps recommended they contact Hydro Innovations. A solution Hydro Innovations recommended that the existing pump be replaced with a Gorman Rupp T3A71S-B ‘Super

T Series’ trash pump fitted with an ‘Eradicator’ solids management system, with hardened internal parts to deal with the grit and stringy materials that flow to the well. The well has a high loading of grass and so the pump was set up to deal with the grass. Two months later and, as a result of the installation, the plant maintenance supervisor, Josh could not be happier, commenting that “The Gorman Rupp pump is a great pump, far better than what we had before!” He added that he hasn’t had to attend the pump at all compared to the once or twice per day required by the previous pump. As a result, the savings are quickly adding up and Josh’s increased productivity is enabling him to work on other projects within the plant that he could not attend to previously. Gorman-Rupp self-priming trash pumps are available in sizes from 2” through to 10”, with flows to 200 litres per second, and pressures to 90 metres. According to the Gorman-Rupp, they have been extremely popular in the very difficult wastewater pumping applications in animal process plants across Australia. Air Liquide proves a game changer in Additive Manufacturing

W

ith an eye on delivering long-term performance with a strong commitment to climate change and energy transition, Air Liquide recognises that the dedication and inventiveness of its people can unlock the potential of accelerating technologies such as Additive Manufacturing. Additive Manufacturing (AM), also called 3D printing, is gaining momentum as it expands from prototyping and small volume runs to serial production. Metal AM is a suite of different technologies with a wide range of applications, but all sharing the need for inert gas. Gases are an important part of the technology for additive manufacturing and are integral to processes such as powder atomisation that make the raw material feedstock employed in many metal AM processes. Gas is needed for powder making to produce the fine powders that are employed in laser and electron beam powder bed fusion processes to make parts such as medical implants. In the powder atomisation process, material is melted and as the molten liquid metal falls into a chamber, high pressure gas – generally argon or nitrogen – is introduced to break the molten liquid into fine droplets which cool to

form fine powder, similar in size to very fine beach sand. There are, however, certain characteristics the powder must possess to be suitable for the AM process. It is important that metallic powder be spherical and have high flowability to feed properly into the 3D printing machine, regardless of the process. Spherical powder particles with high flowability are also critical for powder bed processes where a re-coater rolls over the powder to generate a uniform thickness. The gas atomising method is one of the preferred metal powder manufacturing methods due to its ability to produce spherical, high-density metallic powder for. Gas is used in the 3D printing process for metals and for plastics such as Nylons. Argon or nitrogen gas is required to provide an inert

atmosphere to keep the parts being produced from picking up oxygen which will degrade the properties, and to maintain an inert atmosphere to keep the metal powders from igniting. After parts have been printed, a thermal treatment such as Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) may be performed to optimise the post-production properties. This is necessary as 3D printed parts will typically have some residual porosity. That is, they are not 100% dense. Aerospace, medical and other critical applications require the removal of internal porosity, which necessitates HIP processing. This involves parts being loaded into a pressure tight container where they are heated, with high pressure gas such as argon or nitrogen used to transfer the heat and pressure to the part. Over time, this will consolidate the parts to 100% density. Pressures up to 200MPa are possible with HIP employing gas. The company performing the 3D printing may do this step in-house or contract to an external service provider. Binder jet technology is also a powder-based technology. Unlike laser and electron beam processes where the material is melted, in this instance a liquid binding agent is deposited onto powder particles to hold the particles together. This process is repeated in a powder bed until the part build is completed, after which the binder is removed, and the parts are heated in a furnace

to sinter the powder particles together to form a strong functional part. Air Liquide has developed a 3D Heat Mix gas specifically suited for sintering material produced by binder jet technology. This technology is receiving attention due to its potential to enable large volume metal AM production such as used in automotive applications. Air Liquide already supports many facilities for gas atomisation in Europe, North America and Japan, and is introducing its technology to Australia. Partnering with additive manufacturing company Amaero International – that specialises in metal additive manufacturing for the defense, aerospace and tooling sectors – Air Liquide is providing the safe and reliable gas supply, and the ability to supply high purity argon to meet the requirements of the powder atomisation facility. The 120 tonne-per annum titanium alloy atomisation powder manufacturing facility will produce aerospace and medical grade titanium powders used in additive manufacturing. Amaero’s stringent requirements rely on Air Liquide’s reputation for safe and reliable gas supply, and the ability to supply high purity argon to meet the requirements of the demanding applications Amaero is pursuing, making Air Liquide and Amaero ideal partners to push the boundaries of AM in Australia.

Moreover, there is a perception that a job in manufacturing is a monotonous assembly-line task or work that is done in a dirty and dangerous environment, preconceptions that bear little resemblance to the modern, innovative and technologically advanced manufacturing operations. initiatives have come from women on the factory floor via our suggestion box. Having said that, our female employees are not only confined to the factory floor. We are proud to say that women are employed in all levels of the business from the factory floor to admin, management and leadership. Importantly, we are very flat structured and actively resist operating a hierarchical model. At Charlie’s, we have an inclusive approach to business that we feel breeds collaboration and penetrates the traditional male dominated nature of manufacturing. IU: In general terms, around 30 percent of women are employed in industry. According to the World Economic Forum, 33 percent is the share of women at junior level staff, 24 percent

Jacky Magid: At Charlie’s, our work conditions vary vastly from those described above. Charlie’s operates out of a modern custom built facility that is SQF certified (a GSFI food safety standard). We pride ourselves on our safe manufacturing processes and we offer training opportunities to staff at all levels of the business. The company promotes collaboration where we actively listen to our staff, encouraging them to share their ideas and thoughts around improvements to systems and processes. Some of our greatest manufacturing

at mid-level staff, 15 percent at senior level staff, 9 percent as CEOs across all industries. What is the percentage of women that you employ at Charlie’s Fine Food and do you have a hiring policy that is advantageous to women? JM: In all honesty, we haven’t needed to establish a hiring policy that promotes the employment of women. We are a workplace that offers flexible working practices where possible, and we tend to attract great women as a result. As mentioned previously, we have women at every level of our business.

JM: We are not short of role models at Charlie’s. Many of our team leaders, both in the factory and the office, identify as female. When I began in the sector 15 years ago, having previously worked as a lawyer in construction litigation, I was taken aback by how male-dominated the food service industry was – particularly in sales. This realisation strengthened my commitment to bringing more women into the industry and promoting a flexible working environment that accommodates for those with young families, caring for elders or studying. Charlie’s offers a range of flexible working conditions along with continued training and opportunity for personal and professional growth. This, combined with a commitment to operate a great business, attracts great staff generally but particularly women. IU: Are there specific professional development opportunities that you encourage your team to undertake to improve their skills in the industry? JM: Absolutely. At Charlie’s, we offer a range of professional development and training courses across all levels of the business. These include deeper training in mechanisation, lean manufacturing, food safety, OH&SC, innovation, digital, leadership and business management. Currently, we have at least one staff enrolled in offsite leadership and management training. We are also

committed to promoting staff from within, supporting this with additional training if required. IU: Could you describe your experience within the Australian workplace detailing the highlights and challenges? JM: Like with all family-owned and run businesses – SMEs – there have been some great highs & some low lows. Ken and I came from corporate backgrounds. We were able to bring corporate thinking and business practices to Charlie’s, while leaving some of the more outdated and biased tendencies at the door. We are proud to have grown an inclusive and flexible working environment for people who identify as both male and female. From the get-go, Charlie’s has cared for its staff. This became especially prevalent through COVID and now with uncertainties created by supply chain issues and the dramatic increase in ingredient and input costs. When other businesses were struggling to implement policies around vaccination, Charlie’s empowered their staff with education brining in a local doctor to talk through the available vaccinations and answer any questions. The result was incredible, with staff feeling enabled to make decisions on their and the company’s interests. Another highlight for me came through COVID, where the business pivoted from prominently B2B food service business to B2C business selling to major retailers and growing a consumer brand. Not only has this changed the way Charlie’s does business but it has provided the staff – at all levels – with continued and new ways of working.

The sweet smell of Clover Fields’ success

lover Fields started in 1983 as a boutique business in the Blue Mountains and grew into a thriving factory and design centre which is now based an hour west of Sydney. It was the first company in Australia to replace animal tallow-based soaps with a pure vegetable base, striving to remain at the forefront of innovation in environmentally conscious products and manufacturing. Industry Update caught up with Elizabeth Valek, the founder and owner of this family-owned and female-led business. Industry Update: How does your business differ from the traditional manufacturing workplace? Elizabeth Valek: Although I was only 23 years old when I started the business, I identified the value of women with family having roles in the workplace. At that time, it was not, and still is not, the norm to operate a factory with our hours. We operate and maintain an office and factory floor all within the same hours, working from 9:00am to 5:30pm, and on Fridays from 9:00am to 3:30pm. We built our business on flexible working hours to suit women with children, who can start at 9:00am or 9:30am after school drop off. We also built-in flexibility to be able to leave early if required. I also set out to train many women in roles ranging from clerical through to machinery operation. In our early days,

IU: Can you give us an insight into gender role perception? EV: We are a small manufacturer, so I can only speak from our experience. Women are great critical thinkers, and more importantly, are generally better at time management and lateral thinking than their male counterparts. In any manufacturing and production, the key driver to smooth and effective shop floor management is the notion of ‘brains before the brawn’, so to speak. This is where women excel. As a result, more of these roles have opened to women, and should continue to open, if an employer values cost-effective management of their processes. IU: How do you plan to strengthen your numbers?

many women would say to me that they had not worked for over 10 years. It always amazed me to hear this, so I tried to build the women’s confidence even at the interview stage by reminding them not to sell themselves short, as running a household with children involved a complex skill set. for a few weeks, but I like to feel that when they have a good experience here getting back into the workforce and feel valued, that they leave with the extra confidence needed to move forward with employment. Currently, 13% of our workforce are male. This figure can drop when we employ extra casual who are mostly female.

EV: We are hoping to expand our export sales through new sales methodology by implementing direct sales. This would involve more clerical staff to process the online purchases and also more warehouse staff to implement pick-packing. I already have the infrastructure and would just need to build on this. These roles can all be performed by women, right down to forklift driving. IU: What development opportunities and staff training does Clover Fields offer? EV: We currently have two staff members undergo digital marketing training, with view to moving a lot of

those processes in-house. So far, this is proving to be very successful. These women in turn will be responsible for recruitment and training of more staff as we expand into the export online market. Last year, we trained two other female staff to operate a forklift and will train further to meet needs. We are also implementing extra training for machine operation. This has a distinct secondary advantage of making jobs more fluid. By increasing skill sets, we can cope when staff are absent better. This has been our saviour during absences caused by COVID and also the current labour shortage. Last year, we have upskilled clerical staff on a new accounting system that has enabled us to cost-effectively move more accounting in-house. We are operating more efficiently, having more control over our operations. We are also planning for updated first aid training to be done on-site during this coming year, which is always a good skill for anyone to keep current. All our employees are valued, and we as an organisation can only move forward with everyone behind us as a team.

Packserv Continues to Push Boundaries

ackserv’s efforts to advance the boundaries of packaging machinery development are about to take another significant step forward, yet another partnership with an academic research body is on the cards. To run alongside the previously reported work that Packserv’s research & development team is doing with University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) the team have turned their attention to the development of materials that Packserv machinery is made from with the University of Sydney.

Nathan Wardell “For us the value of partnering with research specialists has been demonstrated beyond any measure. Our work with UTS focuses on developing machinery with IIoT and 4.0 and 5.0 technologies integrated into large, modular production lines. When we turned our attention to looking at different materials and manufacturing technology it was only natural that we should turn to others that can fill our knowledge gaps when it comes to specifics such as metallurgy and advanced manufacturing techniques.

Wardell admits to being pleasantly surprised when they found out that some of the foremost experts in the country in this field could be found less than 2 kilometres from their Marrickville factory at the University of Sydney. Bruce McLean, Chief Engineer at the Sydney Manufacturing Hub explains, “The Sydney Manufacturing Hub [SMH] is one of eight Core Research Facilities at the University of Sydney. Since opening in 2021 we have been working with internal and external researchers and industry to advance the understanding and adoption of Advanced Manufacturing and in particular, Additive Manufacturing.” Wardell explained that the attraction for Packserv was that by partnering with the SMH at the university we get to access state of the art digital manufacturing software, equipment and expertise without the usual eye-watering costs normally associated with this type of development work. Packserv’s research and development team have been looking at different materials for some of

This has involved replacing some parts that are traditionally made from stainless steel with titanium or even ceramic parts that are far more resilient when used in challenging environments. The steel part requires hours of machining, welding, honing, and polishing and therefore comes with a hefty price tag. The printed part can almost be left to create itself overnight. The result being a part that needs only minimal machining and honing as well as increasing resistance to wear or damage from particularly aggressive products. So we asked the customer to get the serial number labels printed with three labels in a row on the one backing tape. “We sent samples to Yaesu who demonstrated a slightly customised machine via video. You simply take the labels one at a time and when you take the last one, a new row of three are presented. “The operators are now very happy and of course the production is much more efficient.” But with success comes imitation. Yaesu machines are often copied and you will see machines that even use Yaesu model numbers on the market. Often these cheap copies do not have parts available and of course, you pay for what you get. “We import these machines

directly from Yaesu, Japan and have access to all spare parts. One small step for smart meters, one giant leap for climate change in Australia

A

n international leader in home intelligence and real-time smart electricity monitoring, Sense, is setting up operations in Australia to help this country achieve Net Zero emissions sooner. Michael Jary, the International Managing Director for Sense, announced the establishment of a local operation in Australia within 12 months, where the company sees strong potential for its artificial intelligence (AI) technology to be embedded with the next generation of smart energy meters. Sense will establish local electricity retailing and manufacturing partners for its AI technology that uses machine-learning algorithms to analyse high-resolution electricity data, providing a breakdown of individual domestic electricity consumption to an appliance level in real time. “Whilst first generation smart meters have made huge strides in digitising the energy sector, they have not fulfilled their true potential. With an excessive focus on the unit cost of the meter alone, these first wave devices could have done much more,” says Jary. “But second wave meters can and must do so much more. They will be affixed to walls until 2040 so they need to be future-proofed.” “Sense technology – which can be embedded in the smart meter – provides data vital to flexible grid management including provision of energy disaggregation information in real time that radically advances grid management to increase flexibility and cut infrastructure costs,” says Jary. “This will be critical to the electrical energy transformation happening now in Australia, in which individual

homes and the grid will be called upon to facilitate the move away from fossil fuels, while accommodating growing trends such as full electric vehicle penetration, heat pumps in most homes, widespread distributed generation, and fluctuating renewables.” In an address given at Australian Energy Week, June 7-9, he said embedding of Sense’s AI technology into smart meters, where it processes high-resolution waveform data in real time, would be a relatively small step for each of Australia’s approximately 10 million households, but would have a major impact collectively on reaching Australia’s Net Zero goals sooner. “Modest upgrades to the next generation of smart meters will allow them to embed Sense technology and run sophisticated AI algorithms. By deploying AI to the grid edge, homes can become more efficient and flexible and we can cost-effectively accelerate the energy transition now happening in Australia,” said Jary, adding that homes account for 25 per cent of total electricity consumption in Australia. “Sense’s AI technology, which can be readily incorporated into the latest smart meters produced by Australian manufacturers, helps consumers save energy, enables demand-side flexibility, and identifies anomalies on the grid. For a relatively minor investment to incorporate this technology into next generation meters produced in Australia, the benefits will be outstanding, providing consumer-controlled savings, and competitive advantages for electricity retailers and meter manufacturers, and a new level of grid flexibility that will be vital as Australia progressively transitions away from fossil fuels.

Australia’s existing smart meter technology needs to be upgraded to deliver a low carbon energy transformation to domestic homes. Real-time device detection at the individual appliance level is in the national interest, and it reduces household power bills.

“There is huge scope to improve smart metering in Australia by adoption of technology which is already being deployed in the US,” he said in a preamble to Australian Energy Week, which is a major annual conference and expo for the energy industry, bringing together generators, networks, retailers, end-users, and government to help shape the energy transition. Michael Jary’s mission in Australia includes introducing the technology to electricity regulators, electricity retailers, and other major organisations involved in the energy transformation. Sense has already formed partnerships with other national and global organisations involved in this process, including Schneider Electric, which is an active participant in the global energy transformation. “Australia needs to provide intelligence in the home that engages consumers, optimises for cost and carbon, and reduces the capital and operating costs of the grid. Such

technology needs to be highly scalable, and dramatically more cost-effective than previous offerings. It needs to be able to balance the grid, and reduce and shift the peaks,” he said. “It needs to engage, not enrage, the consumer by making them a partner in identifying energy waste, tracking electricity costs and saving money on their bills.” Sense’s load disaggregation samples power more than 10,000 times per second, then uses high resolution waveform data analysis to track device activity in homes down to individual appliances, even those that aren’t smart.

n February-March 2022 edition, Industry Update had covered the celebration of the 175th anniversary of this family-owned business at its headquarters in Coevorden, Netherlands. The New Code of Practice Revolutionising Workplace Traffic Management

T

he interaction between pedestrians and vehicles in the workplace presents a major WH&S hazard. Until now there has been very little legislation relating to the subject. Safe Work Australia has published a general guide on traffic management, together with specific guides for aspects such as warehousing. However, while these guides do help to identify the hazards, they do not define or mandate the use of any specific type of barrier. This problem is not unique to Australia. In the UK, incidents involving pedestrians and vehicles in the workplace cause 50 deaths and more than 5000 injuries annually. Worldwide, 317 million workplace accidents occur each year, with 2.3 million people losing their lives. That’s 6300 every day. Alarming statistics like this need to be addressed. As a step towards tackling this, the British Standards Institution (BSI) recently published the first official code of practice for safety barriers used in traffic management for workplace environments.

The code of practice, PAS 13:2017, was sponsored by safety barrier specialist A-Safe, which led an expert steering committee made up of some of the world’s biggest blue-chip companies: Nestle, DHL, Jaguar Land Rover, Allianz, and Mars, to name a few. The resulting document is the final word on safety barrier practice and workplace traffic management procedure, globally. It covers everything from defining minimum requirements for barrier tests and pass/fail criteria for barrier survival and fixings integrity, to assessing the kinetic energy of impacts and implementing appropriate force resistance. PAS 13:2017 contains industry-leading guidance in both the use and design of safety barriers in workplace environments. It is essential reading for anyone working in health and safety in workplace environments. James Smith is co-owner and director of A-Safe. traffic management, segregation and workplace health and safety; and shares best practice on the application and use of safety barriers. Staying safe & healthy at the workplace

T

he feedback from visitors and exhibitors at the recent Workplace Health and Safety Show in Melbourne was extremely positive. The energy was palpable with safety professionals finally meeting in person enjoying connecting, collaborating and learning. One of the key areas of interest for businesses attending the Melbourne Safety event was to learn more about psychological safety and to secure resources that can help to manage this in the workplace. With the recent changes to legislation, the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, reflects not only the requirements for physical safety of employees but also their psychological safety. The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 provides a framework to protect the health, safety and welfare of all workers at work. It defines ‘health’ as including both physical and psychological health. A company has a primary duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of workers and to ensure that other people are not put at risk from work carried out arising from the business. When psychosocial hazards and risks at work are not effectively

managed, this may increase the risk of work-related psychological and physical injuries, incidents and errors. At the upcoming Workplace health and Safety Show in Sydney, SafeWork NSW will present keynote sessions on psychological safety and wellbeing. F

Couple that with little on the ground support, and it will ultimately cause a lot of problems which often delays the installation of the equipment leading to unproductive hold-ups and additional costs,” Mr Gallaher continued. company’s safety-first focus. “Very often companies may think that imported equipment meets the Australian standards, but that is often not the case. Also, whilst it may be fit for a company’s needs today, it may not be right for the long term as their business evolves,” Mr Gallaher went on to say. “Whilst lower cost equipment from overseas may initially seem an attractive proposition, it is ultimately false economy. The rectification costs and time involved to ensure the unit meets Australian safety standards is significant. And if a company does decide to cut corners on operator safety, they are literally walking a tightrope – things can go horribly wrong. Getting the right safety up front is a small price to pay for security and safety long term,” Mr Gallaher said. “Many other benefits accrue when buying locally made equipment: prompt delivery turnaround, the ability to work

MATERIALS HANDLING It’s important, right from the outset, to be clear about the requirements and goals of the automation system. Every application, from food and beverage and e-grocery, to retail and manufacturing, has unique needs, and every warehouse will require a different set-up to optimise the output of automation technologies. It’s equally important to continually learn and optimise the system once it’s in place. Harnessing the huge amount of industrial data available is crucial in learning where bottlenecks occur, and where the system can be tweaked to improve performance and profitability. How does automation continue to shape Industry 4.0? Industrial data is being captured and analysed in greater quantities than ever before. However, even though there are great ideas around the use of big data and artificial intelligence, these are often too theoretical or complex, without enough penetration into the real world. Our industry (and this is one of our roles as an automation technology and software leader) needs to continue to make this useful data accessible and intelligible. We do this through the use of user-friendly tools and interfaces that allow users to efficiently synthesise data and use the findings

to optimise factory and warehouse performance. Monitoring deep foundation pit structure in real time

W

T

he MAPT is a multiport self-averaging flow meter with a design based on the classical pitot tube concept of fluid flow measurement. It produces an averaged differential pressure (DP) signal proportional to the square of the flow rate. The DP output is normally piped to a Differential Pressure transmitter in order to generate an electrical signal proportional to the flow rate. The outer impact tube has a number of pressure sensing holes facing upstream which are positioned at equal annular points in accordance with a log-linear distribution. This pressure is represented at the head as the high pressure component of the DP output. The low pressure component is generated from a single sensing hole located on the downstream side of the

outer impact tube, measuring static pressure. The MAPT is an improvement on the round sensor design due to the unique profiled flats which are positioned around the downstream hole in order to define the separation point at which the flow lines separate as the fluid passes around the outer impact tube. This feature creates a stable pressure area at the downstream pressure sensing hole thereby maintaining a more constant flow coefficient at high velocities enabling a very wide range of flow measurement (turndown).

Real-time monitoring systems play a significant role during the foundation pit excavation process, providing for the operator real-time data such as the deformation and structural condition of foundation pit, to avoid the occurrence of onsite accidents. The importance of greasing moving bearings

T

he importance of greasing bearings when they are moving is often not understood or is overlooked. There is a possibility that the importance is understood but is not done due to practical constraints such as moving machinery and OH&S regulations. Grease introduced into a stationary bearing will take the path of least resistance. Many housings only have one grease entry point. Grease is typically pumped in by a high-pressure grease gun or lube system at a higher than necessary volume, in a short time. It is hoped that the new grease will make it into the bearing and remove the older grease. Some of the grease may enter the bearing but if there is any sort of constraint to its entry, it quite possibly may instead simply pass out the closest seal. Older grease in the bearing will tend to block the entry of new grease. This older grease is likely to be on the peripheries of the rolling surfaces, not

on the areas of contact where lubrication is needed. This means that the older grease, which may be oil depleted, additive-depleted, contaminated or oxidised, remains. Not only is it limited as a lubricant, but its presence impedes the entry of new grease into the rolling elements. In short, the bearing may not have been lubricated even though grease has been added to the housing. The optimal time to grease a bearing is when it is moving. A moving bearing has less resistance to grease input. Slow and progressive grease input at low pressure into a moving bearing allows the grease to be taken up into the moving bearing elements. Grease added slowly and regularly will provide continuous purging of grease that has reached the end of its useful life. As a result, older grease is prevented from remaining in the bearing long enough to become depleted or contaminated, or worse, to harden, and become a lubrication

maintenance problem. Correctly lubricating a bearing in this manner will also reduce grease requirement as the grease is more efficiently used. The actual amount of grease needed to lubricate the contact surfaces is quite small. To achieve this improved efficiency, however, the grease must be introduced slowly and continuously. Lower grease use results in less contamination clean up, being better for both the environment and costs. The benefit of lubricating bearings slowly and continuously, when they

YIZUMI’s 8500-tonne injection machine heralds exciting technical breakthroughs

IZUMI has unveiled its innovative product – the 8500-tonne ultra-large, high precision injection moulding machine, which is the largest injection moulding machine in China. The machine has been hailed as one of YIZUMI’s major breakthroughs not only due to it being the largest machine ever installed in China in terms of tonnage, but also because if its ability to meet specific customer requirements. The machine’s superb performance relies on its advanced technologies, such as precision control technology, two-shot units co-injection moulding technology and injection compression moulding technology. Deputy Managing Director of YIZUMI Group & General Manager of Injection Moulding Machine Division, Zhang Tao said that the R&D of the 8500-tonne ultra-large, high precision injection moulding machine has become an industry benchmark for the development of other large-scale

The overall height of the machine exceeds 6 meters, higher than a 2-story building, and covers 251 square meters. When it comes to the core components, a single platen weighs over 140 tonnes. “It took about 30 technicians four months to assemble the whole machine,” adds Zhang Min. “In the past, the core technology in super large injection moulding machines was mostly supplied by foreign enterprises. Now, the success of YIZUMI 8500-tonne injection moulding machine, of which the rated clamping force is 8500 tonnes, marks a significant breakthrough, setting a new record in China.” The 8500-tonne ultra-large high

We plan to expand the tonnage range for all machine series, ranging from 4500 to 8500 tonnes,” said Zhang Tao. “It took us two years from the initial discussions with customers to the final prototype. During the machine build, many parts were unavailable through our supply chain. As a result, our project team had to spend a lot of time exploring new supply routes.” Currently, the prototype 8500tonne ultra-large high precision injection moulding machine has been built on target and now awaits the final operation test to produce a customer’s mould. Zhang Tao said:

“This machine can be regarded as a milestone for YIZUMI,” said Zhang Tao. “It is more than just being big. The machine also adopts new technologies including injection compression moulding technology and twoshot units co-injection moulding technology.” The successful development of this machine opens a window to the application of large plastic parts and provides a lot of new possibilities.
