The Zoo may have fallen off your radar after the Festival of Lights, but we’d like to put it right back up there! This winter be sure not to miss the penguins. These little tuxedo-clad creatures are the stars of the show during the Cincinnati Zoo’s Penguin Days. On winter weekends through February 26, head to the Zoo for the Penguin Parade. Twice a day (as long as temps fall below 50 degrees), watch as the Zoo’s colony of King Penguins walks between the Wings of Wonder birdhouse and the Children’s Zoo. It’s truly a sight to behold. Plus, every day until March 10, enjoy half-price Zoo admission in honor of these cold-weather creatures.

COMMENTARY & PARENTING WORDS BY // PETE GILBERT
A Dad Influence Shush happens I take my three kids to the library as an afterschool activity every week. As soon as we enter, chaos ensues. Three kids off and running in three different directions, and me trying to keep tabs on the youngest, all while “shushing” my older kids from across the library as they shout to me when they find something they’re looking for. My oldest daughter (age 10) usually knows what she wants to check out even before arriving at the library. She brings the call number with her, ropes an employee or two into helping her and off she goes. Minutes later she comes looking for me after she’s checked out her book, along with a dozen or so issues of Discovery Girls and Girls’ Life magazines. (These magazines tackle hard-hitting topics like: “Are You True to You?”

and “What Does Your Bedroom Say About You?”) My five-year-old picks out whatever books she can grab off the shelves. She should be perusing the Beginning Reader section but many times can be found wandering around looking at World War II biographies, books explaining black holes and self-help books – basically everything except books she might actually enjoy. In fact, on our last visit she checked out a book called, My Two Gay Dads. Her mom and I were a bit confused by that one. My seven-year-old son is the biggest reader in the family. Lately, his favorite books have come from the I Survived series. During a conversation with his sisters about how most
books have happy endings, he looked up from his I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic book and without missing a beat replied, “Mine don’t.” Three different kids. Three different libraryvisiting strategies. Thirty-one books and magazines checked out. A success. Now if we could just keep track of everything when it’s time to return it all, that would really be saying something. Is It Time to Change Schools? What to consider before making the leap WORDS BY // MAGGIE LOISELLE
It’s something nearly every child has screamed at least once between kindergarten and high school graduation, and like many challenges, important lessons are often learned from working through a difficult situation.
But what happens when things don’t get better? When children are consistently unhappy at school, report being bored academically or experience bullying – these types of scenarios are when many parents consider changing schools. “Every child has bad days and times that are difficult academically, emotionally or socially,” says Mary Boat, Director for the School of Education at the University of Cincinnati. “It really does need to be a sustained concern instead of a simply situational issue to warrant the large step of changing schools.”
Before you leave Although you may already be Googling other school options, before you get serious about switching, make sure you’ve
exhausted every available avenue at your child’s current school, experts say. Carol Lloyd, mother of two and Vice President and Editorial Director for GreatSchools, a national nonprofit that provides searchable information and ratings for all types of schools, encourages parents to have uncomfortable conversations with school administrators before considering a move. “I, too, tend to start thinking about moving schools before it’s really reasonable. I’ll do it because I think the school can’t change, or I’ll assume that all of the resources I know about are all the resources that exist,” she says. “But before you start thinking about changing schools, you can’t be afraid to go to the very top. Talk to the teacher, yes, but talk to the principal to see if there’s anything that can be changed higher up.” January 2017 // CINCINNATIPARENT.COM 17
It’s also important that you determine exactly what is causing issues for your child and ask directly if anything can be changed in that regard, such as your child’s schedule, teachers or the way in which they’re being taught.
Finding a new school Once you’ve made the decision to move your child to a new school, it’s time to get serious about researching local options, examining the needs of your child and your family and making in-person visits.
This well-rounded approach can also help you avoid what educators call “school whiplash.” For example, if your child was bullied and your only focus is putting them in a school where they won’t be bullied, you may be overlooking other important criteria, such as academic rigor or the afterschool activity that your child loves. “It can take a long time to get to know your child as a learner,” Boat says. “Take time to listen to what your child values and what’s interesting for him or her, and that information can help you find the best possible fit.”
Be realistic Assess your current situation While it may be tempting to start from scratch when searching for a new school, it’s important to look for things that actually work for your child in his or her current school so you can look for those qualities in a new school. “Ask yourself, ‘What’s working now and what’s not working?’” says Kaleigh Lemaster, Executive Director of School Choice Ohio, a statewide nonprofit that aims to inform parents on education options. “We always tell families to do their due diligence and know everything you want and need from a school beforehand.”
Make sure you have a good understanding of what your needs are. “A lot of families come to us with a list of non-negotiables – things that their child needs in a new school, how far is too far to get to school and how much time they want to spend getting back and forth,” Lemaster says. Also, make sure to look at the big picture. Lloyd relays this experience when she moved her daughter from her old school to what they both believed would be the ideal academic environment. “It really was the perfect school for her, but she had to take public transportation for more than an hour a day, and it just ended up destroying her quality of life,” Lloyd recalls. “For me, I learned that, yes, high academic quality is
important, but there are also some basics, like having your child well-rested and building community.”
Research and visit Once you’ve assessed the needs of your child and your family, it’s time to research local school options in earnest. There are several websites that allow parents to compare school information, ratings, reviews and demographic information, including www.greatschools.org and www. scohio.org. Most schools will also put you in touch with other families who attend. Of course, visiting schools in person is a must as well. “When at all possible, visit the schools in person during the day and see them in motion. Visit a classroom and really get a feel for the environment and if it would be right for your child,” Lemaster says. While every parent is searching for the perfect school for their child, Boat suggests parents also make sure to give the child space to find his or her own way. “Not every situation will be or should be exactly what your child wants. It’s equally important that they understand that different situations call for different ways for addressing things,” she says. “Having a problem that they must solve themselves – such as the time and effort it takes to make new friends – can help them learn, too.”
Deciding to change schools is a big decision, not just for your child but for your whole family. Before making a switch, take the time to understand your child’s needs and how they may be better addressed in a different environment. Research and visit schools that meet your criteria and include your child in the process. If you decide to commit to another school, going “all in” with a positive attitude, from both you and your child, can set everyone up for a better school year.

School Anxiety What could be causing your child’s stress at school?
WORDS BY // Andrea Limke
“I don’t want to go to school.” Every parent has heard this statement at some point – but why? While we often talk about the stress adults feel as they struggle to balance family, work, social obligations and other commitments, we may not always realize the degree to which kids feel stress in their lives. What kinds of stressors do they encounter during their typical day at school – and how can we help them?
What causes stress in school age children? New environments Adults know how anxious they can feel walking into a new job on the first day. Kids have this experience every year as they enter a new classroom with new teachers, classmates and possibly even a new building.
Peer pressure Even as early as elementary school, students are aware of what’s happening in each other’s lives – often due to social media – and the pressure to keep up and fit in can cause stress for many children. 20
CINCINNATIPARENT.COM // January
2017
Academic and test anxiety The pressure to perform well academically can weigh heavily on kids. According to Jennifer Miller, a teacher for Cincinnati Public Schools, “The biggest source of anxiety I see is caused by academics, and specifically state testing. Over the years, I've seen kids get physically sick with stomachaches, headaches, etc. I've seen students who suddenly develop sleep problems, and some who have reverted back to bedwetting.”
Bullying A student who feels intimidated or scared by classmates, whether in person or online, goes to school every day in a hostile environment. Not knowing what may happen next, and feeling unable to change it, can be a major source of anxiety.
Meeting parental expectations Kids can feel anxious about disappointing their parents if they aren’t meeting standards they feel have been set for them. Setting expectations can cross over from motivating a child to achieve to causing worry and fear that they won’t meet certain goals.
Home life If anything is causing stress at home, those feelings will follow the child to school. A major life change such as divorce, death, illness, a move to a new home or birth of a new baby can all be changes that a young child is not well-equipped to handle.
How can parents help? Ask questions When you first notice a problem, start a conversation to find out what’s bothering your child. Brittany Noble, a Cincinnati Public Schools teacher, says, “A lot of times asking ‘why?’ doesn't get you the answers because the child may not know ‘why,’ but asking ‘what happened’ lets them tell you what has gone on and as the adult, we can sometimes figure out the triggers after going through the explanation.”
Listen Once you’ve asked a question, really listen to the answer. Give your child your full attention. The stress he or she is feeling may be difficult to discuss, so be patient and make sure to create a safe environment to talk about their concerns.
Look for positives It’s important to let children know that stress is something everyone feels from time to time and can actually be a positive thing if it motivates you to prepare for a test or practice a presentation, for example. Miller suggests that parents “help children keep a positive frame of mind by assuring that they will be fine if they do their best.”
Follow through and follow up Tell your child how you are going to help him. If you’ve said you will call the teacher, be sure to call. If you decide to reach out to your pediatrician, schedule the appointment. And then follow up with your child. Let him know what you are actively doing to help and that you are taking his stress seriously. As Noble says, “The follow up is almost as important as the initial conversation. Whatever parents do, do not tell the child to ‘get over it.’”

Learn some coping skills “Anxiety becomes a problem when it hinders us from doing our best or makes us physically ill,” says Robin Schaefer, a school counselor in Boone County Schools. “Practice coping skills and challenge your child to try out a variety to see which ones work best.” Find out what works for your child when it comes to relieving stress. Does he or she need to get outside and do something physical? Would keeping a journal help? Can you teach some deep breathing exercises to use in the next stressful situation? Above all, help your child keep the “big picture” in mind and realize that difficult situations will pass.
Every child, like every adult, handles stress in their own unique way. By being on the lookout for ways in which your child may be manifesting stress and having strategies in place to help them, we can teach our kids how to handle stress appropriately now – and in their future.

COMMENTARY & PARENTING WORDS BY // DEB KRUPOWICZ
Ask the Teacher Election worries, promoting respect for adults, goal setting for 2017 First, focus on your own child and his interactions with you. Do not allow him to interrupt you when you are speaking to someone else. This may take some time if he is used to getting your attention right away. Have a signal, such as a gently raised palm, to indicate “wait.” When you and your child are talking together, emphasize the need for him to listen as well as to speak. Be specific when you coach him so he knows the types of behaviors you are looking for.
Q:
Our third grade son has come home from school very worried as his classmates share their parents’ concerns following the election. How can I reassure him?
A:
If your son is anxious because of statements he is hearing at school about the future, a basic explanation of the checks and balances that our three branches of government provide should be helpful in calming your son. There are some child-friendly explanations of this on YouTube. Learning about how voters’ participation can alter government action not only in the voting booth, but also in between elections can help him understand the power of our voices as citizens. Reassure your son that despite what may be happening in the world of government, not much is likely to change for him personally. He will continue to have his family and friends, his home, his church and his
24
CINCINNATIPARENT.COM // January
school, and his daily life will go on much as it always has. Encourage him to keep bringing his concerns to you so you can address any worries he might have in the future as well.
Q:
When I volunteer in my first grade son’s classroom and watch him during his basketball practices, I’m disappointed to see how disrespectful he and his peers are of the adults supervising them. No one listens! What can I do as a parent to change this?
A:
The only thing that you are able to change with certainty is your own parenting style. We all know that we left behind the philosophy that children should be seen and not heard long ago. Our children have amazing things to say, and we want to hear their thoughts, but teaching them to be respectful and good listeners must go hand in hand as well. 2017
Next, make it clear to your son that you expect him to be a respectful listener of all adults, particularly those who supervise him. Should you observe the behaviors that caused your concern with a coach or teacher, point out to him exactly what he did that needs improvement. Talk about when it is appropriate for him to be quiet. Explain that when he makes the choice to fully listen before responding to adults, showing them respect, they will respect him in return. Don’t hesitate to let the teacher or coach know what you are attempting to improve in your son’s behavior. Then consider talking with other parents. Perhaps by sharing your disappointment in your own son and your efforts to change his behavior, you can inspire others to look at their children more objectively. Together you may be able to make positive changes in learning and coaching environments that are based on mutual respect and have the positive outcomes that everyone desires.
Q:
I would like my fifth grade daughter to have some New Year’s resolutions to begin learning how to set goals. Where do you suggest that I start with her?

Long-term goal setting is indeed an important skill to learn. Goal setting for elementary students is more effective when the goals are smaller and attainable, rather than general statements like “I will work harder in school.” Rather than focusing on lengthy and lofty goals, help your daughter key in on one behavior she would like to change. Have the two of you identify specific actions or attitudes that will lead to success. Talk over how she will track her progress and how she will recognize achievement. Emphasize the need to celebrate progress through the process rather than just the end result. Focus on shorter-range goals over two to three weeks rather than an entire year. This is the perfect time to talk about resiliency – the ability to start again if she is not successful every day or if her desired outcome is not reached exactly how she envisioned it. Reflecting on a mistake or a lapse, adapting and moving forward is the most important part to achieving a goal.

For children who are struggling academically, routine homework assignments can seem daunting and simple test preparation can cause anxiety, frustration and tears. Tutoring can be a game changer for kids who are falling behind, but parents may feel overwhelmed by the myriad of options available when trying to find the best match for their child. We’ve taken the guesswork out of the search and simplified the process by compiling practical tips and a guide to tutoring resources in the Cincinnati area. Whether you’re considering long-term or short-term tutoring, we have you covered.
WORKING WITH A TUTOR 1. Consider qualifications First, determine the parameters of your search. Would you prefer a professional teacher or are you also willing to consider a high school student, such as a National Honor Society member, or even a retired teacher in your neighborhood perhaps? Many schools provide a list of available tutors upon request, which may include teachers and students who are willing to work with younger children. What is the tutor’s background? Does he or she have relevant tutoring experience at the appropriate grade level and subject? Can references be provided? Credentials for tutors can vary significantly. Some professional tutoring centers require tutors hold a teaching license while others do not. Also, consider the tutor’s teaching style and methods for motivating students. A standardized approach is not generally as effective with a child who requires remediation. Is the tutor capable of utilizing a variety of teaching styles if a student requires a different approach? Don’t hesitate to ask hard questions upfront to better understand the tutor’s qualifications and methods.
2. Define measurable goals Consider your specific purpose for hiring a tutor. Most often it’s about catching up to grade level, but it could also be helpful for improving in a particular subject or mastering a foreign language. Agree on achievable goals that you can track. Some tutors chart progress through diagnostic testing while others maintain detailed records to track progress. Set clear expectations by discussing goals with both the child and tutor to ensure everyone is on the same page.
3. Give it time Commit to the process. It might take time for the tutor and child to build rapport – a necessary step in the process. Don’t underestimate the importance of interpersonal connection. Personality conflict is cited as the most common reason for a lack of improvement from tutoring. Dread and anxiety before each tutoring session is a red flag and may indicate an underlying personality conflict. Observe your child during tutoring sessions. Ultimately, he or she should be engaged, not bored or stressed. Once the child gains momentum, you should notice enthusiasm and self-confidence grow as subject mastery develops. Commit to a minimum of weekly sessions for a set length of time before stepping back to evaluate whether the tutor is a good fit.
