aby bumps, baby advice, baby names – this month in Dayton Parent it’s all baby talk. If you’re pregnant or a new parent, you probably can’t get enough on the subject, and neither can we!

What’s more fun than one baby on the way? How about two…or three…or even four?

Babies that arrive in bundles can attract a lot of attention! And although it might be natural to think of multiples as a “package deal,” our article “Twindividuals” talks about how to make sure your twins, triplets or quadruplets develop a unique identity all their own.

Some babies decide to come a little earlier than expected, or have concerning health issues at birth, and their first days may be spent in the newborn intensive care unit rather than the crib waiting for them at home. For parents going through this challenge, the worry they feel can be overwhelming. What to Do When Your Baby is in the NICU gives some suggestions for coping with this difficult period – with the best tips coming from our readers who have been there.

Are you a mom who got pregnant easily (maybe even accidentally) your first time around but are having problems becoming pregnant again? While this situation can be puzzling and frustrating, it’s much more common than you might realize. In our article Secondary Infertility two moms share their stories of how this experience affected them.

Veterans PTSD Awareness 5K Post-traumatic stress disorder effects up to 20% of all combat veterans. Help those men and women serving in our armed forces by supporting the Ghost Rider Foundation, a northeast Ohio group that spreads awareness about PTSD and helps veterans get the treatment they need. What to Do When Your Baby is in the NICU Strategies for managing this difficult time

As a parent, bringing your newborn home from the hospital for the first time is one of life’s great joys. But for some parents, this journey can take a little longer than expected.

For those families who face a detour through the newborn intensive care unit (NICU), the experience can be emotionally overwhelming. Read on to learn how to best take care of your baby, and yourself, during this challenging period.

Helping to care for your little one Even when a newborn is in the NICU, parents can take an active role in the everyday care of their baby. “With the support of nurses, neonatal therapists, and respiratory therapists, parents can change diapers, provide hands-on comfort during stressful times, feed their babies (via tube, breast and/or bottle depending on the baby’s age), read to them and hold them,” Ludwig says.

“Once a bit ‘older’ and more stable, they may provide swaddled baths and neonatal massage. Parents can also take temperature readings and

perform diaper changes. Pumping milk (if breastfeeding) and keeping up communication with the health care team are important activities as well.”

Caring for more than one Some families may have twins or higher-order multiples in the NICU at the same time. Because multiples can often be born prematurely, parents may be aware early on that having their infants spend time in the NICU is a possibility. Multiples may find comfort being physically close to one another (if allowed by the health care team).

Talk with your doctors and nurses to find out if this is something they feel would benefit your babies.

Tips for time in the NICU Talk with your NICU team to learn how you can best interact with your baby without posing any outside risk. These tips are often suggested: ♦♦ Don’t be afraid to hold or touch your baby. ♦♦ Tape up pictures of loved ones inside the incubator. ♦♦ Take photos to have mementos of your newborn’s earliest beginnings.

leave for when your baby comes home. ♦♦ Be aware of signs of postpartum depression and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it. ♦♦ If you have other children, make special time to spend with them, too. ♦♦ Take care of yourself. Stay healthy and positive in order to be ready to take your baby home.

Reach out to other parents who have babies in the NICU too – they may be able to understand your concerns more than anyone else. Also, check out websites like Sidelines National Support Network (www.sidelines.org) which provides support for families experiencing premature births. As well, the March of Dimes web site (http://share.marchofdimes.org/) allows you to learn from other parents who have gone through similar circumstances.

Having a baby, but not having them come home with you, is not how parents envision their first days as moms and dads. Remembering that your child is receiving the best possible care by their NICU team can help. And, when you can finally bring your infant home for the first time, their homecoming will be that more special.

We asked Dayton Parent Facebook readers who have had a baby in The NICU to share their suggestions to others coping with this situation: Ask lots of questions of the staff. The nurses are valuable resources.

Don’t be afraid to ask family if you need help getting anything done but also don’t be afraid to ask people not to visit if that’s what you need. Be sure to take care of yourself during this time, that’s actually difficult to do. And don’t let little setbacks bother you too much, we all have good days and bad. – Carolyn S. I agree with taking care of yourself! It’s SO important. I also kept a journal during our time in the NICU. A friend gave it to me as a gift otherwise I may never have thought to do it. I wrote down all of our baby’s stats every day and what the doctors were saying, along with my thoughts and feelings. I wrote letters to our son too while sitting next to him. It was very therapeutic. – Kelly F. Take a deep breath and try to enjoy every experience in the nicu and better times are ahead! Coming from a mom of a 29 weeker who was told he wouldn’t walk or crawl and forever have a feeding tube only.... well my little one has done everything they said he couldn’t. – Sara B. Communicate where you are with your partner - physically and emotionally... even if the words aren’t exactly clear, or they are scary to say out loud. If you can feel heard and understood, it goes a long way to helping you keep yourself centered. When hearing where your partner is, do your best to not make them [feel] wrong or judge them for where they are. You don’t have to be perfect, you don’t have to have all the answers. Listen to your head, and listen to your heart. – Jeremy R. My son was in for 6 weeks. I agree with everyone. My husband and I decorated his isolette, read to him so he would know our voices, took tons of pictures and asked the nurses to let us know when we were allowed to change diapers. I cried a lot but the nurses were there for us. We still run in to many 10.5 years later and we can all look back and know how far my son has come. – Rebecca U.

arents with new babies are always sure to attract attention when they go out in public, and when that stroller holds two, three or four babies, that attention is… well, multiplied!

“Are they twins?” “How do you find time for yourself when you have triplets?” “Your quads are adorable!” Friends and strangers alike usually can’t help but refer to your babies as a package deal (“the twins” or “the triplets”). So how do you make sure your children grow up feeling unique and valued as individuals while still embracing their lifelong special bond?

unique characteristics and differences too. Those differences will emerge naturally and it’s important to acknowledge them.”

Dayton mom Leslie Williams agrees. Williams has 16 year old twin girls and says, “We let them know early on that they were not competing against each other. We told them to find their own purpose and go for it. People don’t even realize the girls are identical twins because one has really short hair and the other has dreadlocks!”

Rhonda Mercs, another Dayton mom of teenage twin girls, says that while she and her family talk about their girls’ special bond, she agrees that parents should help their multiples develop a sense of individuality. “We dressed the girls differently and even got them each their own birthday cake.”

Indeed, as author Joan Friedman, PhD of Emotionally Healthy Twins: A New Philosophy for Parenting Two Unique Children and The Same but Different: How Twins Can Live, Love and Learn to Be Individu als says, “Twins who aren’t encouraged to develop

their own sense of self often feel guilty, frustrated, disappointed or confused when trying to go about their daily lives as adults.” Friedman is also an identical twin and mother of five, including fraternal twin boys. She suggests parents try another tip of buying a single stroller so that each child can be taken out separately to spend one-on-one time with parents and grandparents. Also, if possible, allowing each child to have his/her own room, or at least an area that is just for them, lets multiples have some alone time to develop their own sense of identity.

Appreciate their special bond That’s not to say that multiples shouldn’t celebrate their one-of-a kind relationship. When Dayton Parent Facebook readers were recently asked about their experiences raising multiples, dozens of readers chimed in. Natasha B. writes, “Our 8 year-old identical boys are nearly identical in personality, too. We make sure to spend individual time with them, taking each to his favorite restaurant and place to hang out by themselves. Honestly though, they always want to hang together and do a lot of the same things. Most of the time, whichever one we are out with will wish his brother was there to share the experience.”

Twin Kaylynn D. wrote that she and her sister are extremely different in their personalities, but says, “We’re opposites but I like to think that makes us a good team.”

Having a twin or triplet really is a special kind of sibling relationship. Who else can say they have been with you from the very beginning? Encourage your multiples to appreciate what makes their connection such a unique bond.

Learn from other parents Raising multiples can be daunting, but thankfully there are resources available. In addition to providing support to parents of multiples, The Dayton Mothers of Twins Club hosts many special events and twice-a-year clothing and equipment sales.

Another opportunity to share common experiences and celebrate your multiples is at The Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio. Twins Days is the largest annual gathering of twins and other multiples in the world and takes place the first full weekend of August.

Whether your baby arrives on his own, or with a sibling or two in tow, each child deserves to develop his own interests, talents and unique way of looking at the world.

Exploring Outdoors During Winter Tips for making sure your kids are safe – and have fun – in chilly weather

D

on’t let a little cold keep your kids from exploring the outdoors this winter.

“It’s important to get kids outdoors from an early age – even as infants – so they are used to experiencing the sensations and are comfortable in nature,” says Joshua York, Five Rivers MetroParks outdoor connections education supervisor. “Let kids touch the snow and embrace the sensory experiences nature has to offer.”

Studies show children are smarter, more cooperative, happier and healthier when they play outdoors, according to the nonprofit organization Children & Nature Network.

“Playing with snow is wonderful, and winter is a great time for kids to use their imaginations outdoors,” says Doug Horvath, Five Rivers MetroParks outdoor connections education supervisor. “Familiar parks and even the backyard are new and exotic when snow-covered or when frozen water forms beautiful ice formations.”

The key to making sure kids are safe and comfortable when playing outdoors is in the clothing. Like adults, kids should dress in layers – and take off hats and gloves, if only for a minute, if they start to sweat while playing.

“I have seen children happily flop onto the snow and lay on it comfortably when they are well dressed,” Horvath says. “Sledding, exploring and just hanging out all become fun when you are well padded against the chill. Packing a thermos of hot coca and an extra blanket and going on an adventure can become a favorite family memory.”

Other suggestions for enjoying the outdoors include: ♦♦ Help kids create large snowballs and stack them to make snow people or animals. ♦♦ Break some ice from buckets or frozen puddles to use as ice palace walls. ♦♦ Blow bubbles outside and see if they freeze.

♦♦ Monitor the temperature outside to discover the coldest and warmest parts of the day. ♦♦ Look for animal tracks in the snow or mud and see if you can identify them. ♦♦ Have a backyard campfire, combined with Dutch oven cooking.

“This was something my body was just supposed to know how to do,” says Amy M., a mother of three who faced secondary infertility following a more typical first pregnancy.

“I was confused,” she says. “Was there something wrong with me? Was it my husband? How could it work the first time and not now? Would we ever have another child?” The experience left her feeling frustrated, sad and angry, says Amy. This situation is not uncommon. According to Dr. Jeremy Groll, Medical Director at SpringCreek Fertility, around three million women in the United States face secondary infertility. He points to a strong correlation to age: “At maternal age of 25 years, approximately five percent of women experience secondary infertility,” he explains, citing a 2012 study. By age 40, that number climbs to over 20 percent of women.

Groll says potential causes for secondary infertility include age-related ovarian decline, female hormonal imbalances, uterine abnormalities or polyps, and low/declining sperm counts.

Allyson S., mother of two, dealt with a metabolic issue. Her endocrinologist described her pituitary system as “all out of whack,” and said it could be difficult to conceive or maintain a healthy pregnancy. In fact, Allyson would experience two miscarriages before experiencing a successful pregnancy.

Fortunately, a myriad of fertility treatment options are available. Groll says beyond treatment of underlying metabolic hormone problems or surgery

for anatomic problems, oral medications like Clomid and Femara are often prescribed. More complex treatments include intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). “These are so effective now,” he says, “especially IVF, where pregnancy rates may be over 60 percent in some instances, that these may be appropriate to consider as first line treatments for many couples, particularly when timeliness is a higher priority.”

Amy and her husband tried several options. “I went through seven inseminations. The first three were with Clomid. Then I had laparoscopy to clean out scar tissue. I had my final four IUI’s with injectables,” she explains. For Allyson, getting her metabolic issue under control was a major factor. For both women, these subsequent pregnancies felt a little different from their firsts.

“You can’t help but feel different after experiencing fertility issues,” Amy says. Once her twin pregnancy was confirmed, she remembers, “I was paranoid it could all be taken away. Every appointment I was panicked we would not hear the heartbeats. I was sure every worst case scenario was going to happen to me.”

But, she adds, “I was more present.”

She says she took time to sit and feel her babies move. “When I could quiet the doomsday voices in my head, I allowed myself to enjoy this pregnancy because I knew it could be my last. I didn’t complain as much. I slept in a chair for the final six weeks, but I woke up each day happy.”

Allyson describes feeling more anxious compared to her first, “easy” pregnancy. “After two miscarriages, there was lots of worry,” she says.

Both moms would assure other women facing secondary infertility that this experience is a common one. “A lot of people don’t realize that secondary infertility is a thing,” says Allyson, “but it is, and there are a multitude of reasons it might occur.”

Groll also recommends the resources at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (www.asrm. org) and The National Infertility Association (www.resolve.org), where patients can get a list of questions to ask their fertility specialist.

For women concerned about secondary infertility, Groll suggests initial testing with an OB/GYN. From there, consider moving on to more in-depth screening at an appropriate facility. At his practice, they focus solely on fertility issues. He suggests women “let their providers know they are actively attempting to achieve a pregnancy. If people have a concern about secondary infertility, they should seek treat-

You will be shocked how many others have experienced this. If a baby is something your heart desires, get a little pushy, and don’t let anyone tell you just to wait and see. The only timeline you need to follow is the one you are personally comfortable with.”

True confessions of a stay-at-home dad

hy are parents so confused and disoriented looking all the time?

Maybe it’s because while parenting is based so much on repetition and routine, it is also constantly changing. Just think of some of the ways parents change as their kids age.

First, there’s Pre-parenting. Pre-parenting is a delusional stage, where the expectant couple thinks they are going to do things differently than all parents that ever existed before them. Pre-parents think having a child won’t change their weekend and social behavior, and that a child can just be dragged along to all the usual activities (dining out, impromptu weekend getaways, etc.) Pre-parents say things like, “We’ve had a dog as a pet for a few years…how much different could it really be?”

The next phase of parenting, The Newborn Phase, hits new parents like a brick wall. The Newborn Phase (also known as the Dark Days) is a scary place to be. Sleep deprivation firmly sets in. Simple things like going to the grocery store or taking a bike ride, now take planning, effort and coordination with others. Spending time with friends is unlikely because of “the

schedule.” When you do see your friends all you do is talk about the baby.

One of the worst phases occurs after the Newborn Phase, The Perfect Parent Phase. As the baby gets a little older, parents revert back to their preparent cockiness. Perfect Parents only purchase handmade wooden toys AND put them all away each night. They make their own baby food and later pack lunches on car trips to avoid fast food.

Perfect Parents only last so long before they crack under the pressure they put on themselves. They eventually give up the losing battle of neat play areas and organized toy closets. These parents will also be the first to pull over for a Happy Meal if it buys them 15 minutes of peace and quiet on a road trip.

Parenting. We’re all on this crazy ride together, so we might as well enjoy it.

hen my son first laid eyes on our new car, a crossover vehicle intended to accommodate our toddler and soon-to-arrive infant, he cried, “It’s a blue police car van!” As the weeks went by, I adopted the new nickname myself. I didn’t think much of it. We have a lot of little names for things around our house. Calling the car “the blue police car van” seemed relatively normal – or so I thought until one April morning.

William was taking a bath while I gazed out the bathroom window. And then, through the hedge of my backyard, I saw it. The vehicle was the precise shade of blue as our new car. It was a van. And on top was a flashing red light. “William!” I cried in genuine astonishment, “It’s a blue police car van!” He looked at me blankly. I couldn’t believe it. Not only was the blue police car van a real vehicle, but it was merely an arms-length away. The van,

I found out later, belongs to one of our neighbors. It was as if William had told me about an imaginary monster and then there it was strolling across our back lawn.

I try to teach William things all the time: what his nose is called, what a red light means, the importance of saying please. That our car bears a startling resemblance to a blue police car van is one of the first things he has taught me, but I’m sure it won’t be the last. For if the blue police car van exists on our very street, what else is right under my nose that I am missing? What I really learned that day was more fundamental than planes, trains and automobiles. My son is not an extension of me, just as I am not an extension of him. By seeing the world through his eyes, my own vision can become richer and more complete – and, best of all, more fun.

My second grade daughter does not have a best friend at school. She seems to like school well enough, but she doesn’t show particular interest in any one person or ask to have anyone over. Should I be concerned?

A

Provided that your daughter has friends at school, don’t worry about her not having a “best” friend. Perhaps she takes greater pleasure in having a larger group of friends for recess play and lunch company.

Some of the less desirable characteristics of girls’ friendships can start at a very young age. By getting to know many different girls, she will have options that keep her from feeling isolated when a “best friend” does not want to spend time with her. And by seeing how many different people treat others, she will develop a better sense of the kind of friend she wants to be.

Your daughter may not feel drawn to an intense school friendship if she is close with a sibling or cousins. Strong bonds with family members that have developed throughout her lifetime may give her such a sense of love and security that she doesn’t see the point or feel the need to develop deep friendships at school.

You can nurture the idea of building strong friendships by inviting a few classmates for playdates rather than focusing on one person in particular. Having a small cluster of children together will give you a good sense of how your daughter interacts in the group as you observe her firsthand. This can give you the opportunity to talk through

situations you overhear, chat about the feelings of others as well as her own feelings in various scenarios, and discuss who she might like to spend more time with.

Every year at this time, my daughter’s grades tend to drop and I’m not sure why. It seems like teachers go through material so much faster the second half of the year – why is this?

February and March are the toughest months of the school year for many students. A teacher works to set the foundation for success early in the year. As the school year moves past the mid-point, expectations are raised with an eye on things wrapping up and on the year ahead – all in the context of what was accomplished in the earlier part of the year. It may be natural to expect

that things would get easier as your daughter gets more accustomed to the teacher and her classroom.

However, it is the teacher’s job to continually raise the bar of expectation so that learning happens in an increasingly challenging environment.

The mid-year slump may also be attributed to the winter doldrums.

My son’s school tends to have indoor recess often during the harsh winter weather. When he comes home, he is bouncing off the walls.

What can I do to help him burn off some of his extra energy?

A

Physical activity is such a necessary component of an elementary child’s day, and during the winter months it can be tough to get that in at school. There are several things you can do at home to provide the movement your son needs.

Playing outside after school is the best and easiest way to get some much needed exercise and fresh air. If the weather is not conducive to being outdoors, consider closing the garage door to allow your son to run around or even ride a bike without having

to worry about being too loud or rambunctious. Or set up an obstacle course with trash cans for him to dribble a ball around.

If being inside works better for your family, time your son to see how many times he can go up and down the stairs in three minutes. Pretend to be his personal trainer and take him through a short exercise circuit. Put on some music and have a dance party. Play “Simon Says” using large motor movement as the directives. Any activity that gets him moving and having fun will work!

A greater perspective or a defined goal may spark the necessary motivation for your daughter to demonstrate greater commitment to her grades.

is the season of orders!

It feels like we all just finished unpacking that final box and hanging that last picture but many military families will soon or have already received word that they will be moving to a new duty station in the coming months. It might be a dream spot, like Italy or Florida. Or it might be a place you’ve never imagined living. But that’s part of the military adventure, right?

Once the orders are written, and you’ve notified the masses on Facebook, it’s time to start house hunting. Whether you are renting, buying or moving on base, relocating into new digs takes some detective work. Here are a few tips to watch for when searching for a home.

1.

Check out militarybyowner. com. This is the premiere source for all sorts of rental and sales options including homes, condos and apartments, all near military bases. Photos and video tours are included in the ads as well as relevant contact information.

2.

If you have the chance, visit the house in person. Download the militarybyowner app.

It comes in handy when tooling around searching various streets for listings.

3.

Don’t be fooled by room descriptions that include words like “quaint” or “funky.” Those can be pseudonyms for “small” and “awkward.”

4.

Take note of high-end touches like a built-in wine cooler, upgraded pendant dining room lights or heated bathroom floors. It shows the homeowner or builder spent time on desirable improvements.

5.

Research the recycling rules in your new zip code. Is there a good place to put compost bins and recycling receptacles?

If it’s a rental, consider asking the landlord to install roll-out bins for waste.

6.

Do your homework. Websites like Militarytownadvisor.com are flush with honest reviews of subdivisions, their proximity to schools and even whether it’s kid friendly. For example, here is one detailed review written by a reader: “This is a very social neighborhood. It is located downtown within walking distance to restaurants, bars, shopping etc. It has a children’s play park and a large gathering green for social events.

During the summer, the neighborhood has potluck dinners and wine parties. Also, during the holiday season, the neighborhood has an open house. Buy lots of candy for Halloween!”

If you are planning to buy a home, take your time. Buying real estate on impulse is a recipe for disaster. Talk with real estate agents and your financial planner to make sure you can afford the home.

What will your mortgage payment cost each month? What happens if you have to move in a year? Will you recoup the costs if you have to sell? Do you want to hang onto the home and rent it out? Real estate can be a tricky investment so make sure it’s the right time for you.

Don’t be shy and ask for help. Reach out to your networks and ask around about places to live near your new base. When my husband and I moved to Northern Virginia, I didn’t know a soul there. We were off-schedule from most of our peers so while they were going to the fleet, we were on our way to fly a desk at the Pentagon. A friend connected me to a

friend via email. I’d never met the woman, but she answered tons of questions about the area. She even arranged for the house we bought to be cleaned before we moved in.

Most importantly, keep an open mind. While your next place may not be your dream home, you’ll still create tons of memories – even in a charming historic home that in actuality, was cramped and boxy, had creaky steps, a spooky dungeonlike basement and a bathroom in the kitchen.

Camp is an equal opportunity life changer. It addresses universal childhood needs not specific to a particular racial, ethnic or socioeconomic group. Nobody is left out. It’s all about childhood development.

C

hildhood is a time of profound change and development. It is exciting and cause for trepidation at the same time.

When it comes to our children, we must strive to ensure change is a growing opportunity that will stand them in good stead for the future. The fact that our kids will inherit all the economic, social and environmental challenges we’ve created makes both the tangible and intangible skills they learn in their youth all the more important.

So, how do we prepare our children with the competencies they will need to tackle changes in our world?

We could start with a positive camp experience. A quality camp experience provides children with the opportunity to learn powerful lessons in community, character-building and healthy living in a meaningful, engaged and participatory environment – not to mention a laundry list of invaluable developmental skills.

Camp makes a lasting impact. One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a sense of success and achievement. Through active participation, camp teaches kids to ask questions, ask for help and try new things. They leave understanding that it’s okay to feel a little uncomfortable sometimes, because that’s generally what happens when they’re getting ready to learn something. And they also see that failure is an acceptable and inevitable part of the learning process. It breeds resilience and translates into a cando attitude long after a child has returned to the real world.

Camp teaches critical thinking. We need to remember how important it is to be actively involved in the learning process, and camp affords that. We’ll need really strong problem solvers in the next century.

While children need courses like science, math and biology, without the ability to relate, connect, empathize or inspire innovation, how will they learn to truly make a difference in the face of the challenges to come?

While our children have fewer and fewer opportunities to be outdoors, the camp experience embraces the natural environment and advances outdoor learning. The environment must be experienced to be appreciated. Kids need to catch tadpoles in the creek, wander among the trees, and feel the sun on their faces to understand the importance of those things. Preventing Frostbite and Hypothermia Simple steps to avoid these winter weather dangers

old and wet. The two most dangerous words in winter.

Put them together and you have a recipe for frostbite and hypothermia. To prevent these conditions, parents need to provide their children with the proper gear to stay warm and dry.

“When temperatures dip into single digits, it’s really not safe for children to be outside for almost any length of time,” says Lisa Schwing, RN, trauma program manager at Dayton Children’s Hospital. “Despite the snow that begs for a sled, it’s better to put off outdoor play to a warmer day.”

If your child has to go out, for example to wait for the bus, remember frostbite can begin in a matter of minutes in single digit temperatures.

Frostbite is characterized by numb fingers, ears and noses and eventually can lead to redness and pain.

Sometimes the affected skin feels hard and looks waxy.

Here are five ways to protect your child from these numbing temperatures.

Stay inside.

If there is no reason you must take your children out, keep them inside. Sub-zero wind chills are not suitable for playing outside. Only essential trips should be made in the cold.

areas of the body that have been affected by the cold: ♦♦ Remove wet clothing and give your children warm, dry clothes. ♦♦ Soak the area in warm, never hot water (less than 108 degrees). ♦♦ Avoid rubbing the area, which could damage tissue. ♦♦ Cover the body part loosely with a non-stick, sterile dressing or dry blanket. ♦♦ Have your child drink warm beverages, such as hot cocoa, tea or milk.

Parents should contact their diatrician with any concerns. If child’s skin looks discolored or child has lost sensation, call 911 mediately.

Another danger of the cold is hypothermia, a dangerous decrease in body temperature, which can affect brain and muscle function. “Younger children are more susceptible to hypothermia,” says Tom Krzmarzick, MD, medical director of the Regional Pediatric Trauma and Emergency Center at Dayton Children’s Hospital. “Children can’t compensate for heat loss as well as adults. Infants are especially at risk for hypothermia.”

Children are more at risk for several reasons. Children have thinner skin than adults and their blood vessels are closer to the surface. In addition, people lose most of their body heat from their heads. Children have proportionally larger heads in comparison to adults, so more surface area can leak heat.

Imagination Yoga uses an adventure theme to guide children through a kids yoga class flying like birds, mooing like cows, or shooting through space in a rocket ship. Each adventure stimulates creativity and incorporates developmentally appropriate kids yoga poses, calming techniques, and kindness exercises.
