Marching into March Looking back on these last, dwindling days of winter, I’m glad to say that my family and I have checked off almost all of the boxes on our winter bucket list. Sledding? Check! Ice skating? Check! Making snow ice cream? Check! And that’s not even the whole list. Whew, we did a lot of wintery things this winter. We made the best of the cold, gray days. Which is why I’m not at all sad to say “see ya next year” to winter and welcome spring with open arms. I’m ready to march right into March. Or stomp into March… kind of like a dinosaur. Because one of the things my family and I have been looking forward to this spring is the re-opening of The Children Museum of Indianapolis’ Dinosphere exhibit. It’s going to be huge, it’s going to be fun, and it’s going to be a must-see for all families. Learn about all of the greatness that awaits you in the Dinosphere article on page 12.

INDYSCHILD.COM I March 2022

We’ll also be greeting the warmer days of spring with a good dose of travel. Winter days have had my family and I feeling stuck in a rut, but now that it’s getting warmer — and with spring break on the horizon — we are starting to map out what we want to do and where we want to go for a quick spring trip. If you’re getting the itch to get out of town, too, then check out “Take a Spring Break Road Trip” on page 18. We give you a few ideas for some springbreak destinations that are road-trip worthy, with activities and fun for everyone. Have a marvelous March!

HIDDEN GEMS

Buff City Soap Buff City Soap is a colorful, deliciously scented shop that is sure to add a bit of joy to your day. All of the products in the shop are 100% plant based. As we toured the store, we could smell the different scents, including bath bombs in the kids’ section that smell just like Fruit Loops! My son said it made him hungry. (He seems to always be hungry lately — maybe that’s just how 12-yearold boys are?)

Buff City also offers birthday party packages. For $200, the birthday kid and several friends get to mix, mold and paint between 6-7 bath bombs each. And their bath bombs serve as the party favor, too.

12955 Old Meridian St., Suite #150, Carmel buffcitysoap.com

After a walk around the shop, we went to the bath bomb bar to create a naked bath bomb. My son was able to choose a scent and colors for his paint tray. He chose a vanilla scent with neon colors. While I shopped, my son painted his bath bomb. Two more kids entered the shop to do the same thing. When they were finished painting their bath bombs, they were packaged up to go. I can honestly say that my son has never been as eager to take a bath as he was that night, nor has he ever smelled as good! The bath bomb bar is a free experience along with any purchase in the store.

WORDS BY KIMBERLY HARMS, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

A Gigantic Jurassic Experience

Wonders await you in the new Dinosphere at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Once upon a time, there was a Jurassic site that looked like a dusty patch of land. That is, until The Children's Museum of Indianapolis visited and began uncovering layers and layers of secrets.   When asked what kind of secrets, paleontologist Laura Rooney whispered, “You usually pick one. Do you want footprints? Do you want plants? Or do you want the fossils of the dinosaur bones? Here, we have them all together, and that's a wonderful experience to get to see them all in one place.” The NEW Dinosphere is designed to make you feel surrounded by a magical world of prehistoric plants and animals. It literally feels like walking into the pages of a fairytale. You will see giant dinosaurs that stretch 70 feet, a huge sea turtle, and a creature with a super long neck that looks like what you would imagine the Loch Ness Monster to be. These creatures were buried for hundreds of millions of years, and your eyes will be among the first to see them. It is almost too much to fathom!

Giants of the Jurassic An immersive environment and soundscape transports visitors into a Jurassic river and savanna environment. Stomp through the forest and encounter a massive, four-legged, long-necked, plant-eating sauropod! Get ready to tilt your head way back so you can see up to the very top of its head. Better yet, take the elevator up a couple of f loors and stare directly into its face.

Each one of the dinosaur’s bones provide a clue to what life was like 150 million years ago. What in the world did a dinosaur use that super long tail for? Could it be to counterbalance the rest of its body? Scientists continue to study the ways sauropods used their tails. Your kids might have their own ideas. And, if you’re wondering how some dinosaurs grew so big so quickly: One reason is that their digestive system adapted to

how scientists and paleo artists work together to help bring the prehistoric world to life by creating art. Imagine your child’s delight when they draw their own creature and watch it come to life on a big screen with other animated dinosaurs.

Actor Interpreters

extract nutrients efficiently from their diet of plants. Sauropods had teeth that were adapted to strip leaves off plants, and their ultra-long necks helped them reach a wider variety of plants. Back down below, follow the sauropod tracks to discover what they might have been up to. But brace yourself! As you round the corner, you’ll be looking into the wide-open jaws of a Super Croc!

Creatures of the Cretaceous Mysterious creatures from Earth’s past return to the cinedome to ignite your imagination and delight your sense of adventure. Learn stories about the Gorgosaurus, Hypacrosaurus, Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops, as told by their fossils. But keep your eyes open and prepare to duck, because you might see a few ancient creatures f lying overhead.

Paleo Prep Labs The learning doesn’t stop there. Discover the real science behind dinosaurs from real scientists in the Robert B. Annis and Polly Horton Hix Paleo Prep Labs. There, you can watch as the team saws open the protective casts used to safely transport fossils from the Jurassic Mile in Wyoming all the way to Indianapolis. Watch scientists use small tools to clean the bones, while others will put hundreds of tiny pieces of a giant fossil puzzle together right in front of you. Share their enthusiasm as they explain where the fossils were found, what the scrape marks on the fossils might mean, and what types of teeth were discovered nearby.

How did the animals adapt? One way to find out might be to have a staring contest with a sea creature that has eye sockets the size of dinner plates. Explain that the Baptanadon’s huge eyes might have helped it see better in low light. Why would an Elasmosaurus have such a long neck? Perhaps it hid its body behind coral and used its long neck to snap up prey. Each piece of these fossils paints a bigger picture of these animal’s stories.

Dinosphere Art Lab Speaking of pictures: Ongoing scientific exploration helps change the way we view dinosaurs. In the Dinosphere Art Lab, families learn

Dramatic, live and interactive programming will help families dig deeper into the dinosaur’s prehistoric world. A host will explain how to use fossil clues to discover how dinosaurs lived. Encounter the story of Mary Anning, one of the first female paleontologists. Take a deep dive with a “dive instructor” and explore the spectacular giants of the ancient seas. They help us understand how the Earth’s past can help us predict future changes that might impact life on Earth. The lights, the sounds and the movement remind us all that these magnificent creatures were once living things just like us.

Monsters of the Mesozoic Dive deep into ancient waters and explore a treasure trove of aquatic animals, including the largest turtle to ever swim the seas: a six-foot-long Archelon. Sometimes, it’s difficult for kids to imagine what something was like two to three years ago, let alone millions of years. That is where an adult can help explain that animals have evolved over time and adapted to Earth’s ever-changing environments.

Making Time for Mom

Here’s how and why it’s important to fit fitness and self-care into our busy schedules. Being a mom is an allday, every-day job. From caring for kids to keeping up with housework — plus work responsibilities, maintaining relationships, remembering everyone’s appointments … the list goes on — it seems impossible to squeeze in any time for yourself. But selfcare needs to find a spot on your to-do list, too! Finding a way to prioritize fitness, for your physical and mental health, will help you be the best mom that you can be. “I have worked with many new moms, and it can be hard to recognize the importance of self-care,” says Shannon Strzynski, a personal trainer and group fitness instructor at the Monon Community Center in Carmel. “It can also seem like there is not enough time in the day. But finding 30 to 60 minutes for yourself can really help foster a positive mind set, and increase the mental and physical ability to take care of others throughout the rest of the day.” Strzynski suggests building a self-care habit as soon as possible, starting with as little as a minute a day of dedicated self-care time. “Make self-care as normal as brushing your teeth,” she says. “Then, let that grow over time to attending a fitness class or spending time in a gym.”

Finding childcare can be a barrier to carving out time for yourself, especially for moms with young children. Strzynski suggests finding a place — like the MCC — that offers great child care.

Currently, Strzynski teaches an express 30-minute workout class at the Monon Community Center, which she says is perfect for moms on the go. But she also adds that the MCC has one of the largest fitness schedules she has seen in one location. “There is something for everyone,” she says. “Zumba, barre, tabata, bootcamp, pilates, water aerobics, spin, and strength and cardio classes. All of our instructors are so knowledgeable and friendly.” So we know that self-care and fitness is important. But what do we do if we just don’t feel motivated to take that next step? “Some days will be harder than others,” Strzynski says. “Knowing your ‘why’ makes it easier to get out of the door. For example, your ‘why’ could be ‘to get healthy long-term, so I can see my kids graduate college.’

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

14

INDYSCHILD.COM I March 2022

“A great childcare center gives moms the ability to work out while their children make new friends,” Strzynski says. “The MCC provides that with KidZone! KidZone is a reservation-based indoor playground and area for kiddos up to 12 years old. Members can utilize the space for up to two hours while they work out. And in the summer, the MCC offers camps for kids. So, moms can have some ‘me time’ to work out, while their children attend great programs and camps. Then afterward, everyone can spend family time having a blast at The Waterpark or navigating the trails around the center!”

Or it could be ‘to get my body back,’ ‘to run a 5K,’ ‘to look good in my clothes’ or ‘to feel good in my body.’ On days when motivation is low, I go through my list of ‘whys.’ It’s something that usually gets me moving.”

Strzynski emphasizes that when you spend time on yourself, the investment will start to impact everything. “Not only will you be building a healthy body, but you will be cultivating a healthy mind,” she says. “And children see this. You will be creating a foundation for your children to do the same.”

Make Fitness a Family Affair As busy parents, we know how tough it is to squeeze in a workout. Between nap times, school pickups, drop-offs and all our other parental duties, maintaining a healthy lifestyle — especially as a family — seems to be constantly under attack. Not only do we let our own health and fitness goals slip to the back burner, but we often don’t set the healthy example for our kids that we want to and know how to. Finding solutions that combine the needs of adults and children creates a unique win-win where families play together, get fit together, and have an excellent opportunity to set a great example and interact through play and fitness. That’s why SwingSesh was created: to provide parents a convenient way to achieve their fitness goals, stay familyoriented and be a great role model for their kids. SwingSesh inspires the entire family to stay active by seamlessly combining top-tier strength and conditioning equipment with a high-quality playground. SwingSesh was born from a love of fitness, family and fun. As an active-duty U.S. Marine pilot, SwingSesh founder Brad Leeman — a Noblesville native — has to stay fit to meet military

standards, but found that with a busy work schedule, spending time in the gym was taking away from family time. He wanted to show his kids the importance of fitness in everyday life, and what better way to do that than to combine a home gym with a playset? Unlike anything else on the market, SwingSesh — which is made right here in Indiana — is constructed of a heavy-duty welded steel frame designed to allow the whole family to play and workout together. In addition to all the features kids love, like swings, slides, monkey bars and climbing ladders, SwingSesh is built for the grown-ups too, with pull-up bars, dip bars, box jumps and customer options like a squat rack, 15-ft climbing rope, and many other fitness attachments.

What could be more convenient than your own backyard? There’s no commute, no babysitter, no getting ready, no need to get up early or stay up late — just put on your shoes and go workout!

When the kids want to go out and play, you play too! As parents, it’s up to us to create opportunities where we can align our needs with our kids’ needs so the whole family can benefit. Summer is right around the corner. Now is the time to step up your backyard game with something the whole family will love. Take a Spring Break Road Trip Family-friendly destinations that are just a short drive away!

Spring break is almost here, and your family is probably eager to get out of town and explore someplace new. Luckily, Indianapolis is surrounded by many family-friendly destinations that have something for everyone. Here are just a few ideas for a quick trip this spring.

18

INDYSCHILD.COM I March 2022

Fairfield County, Ohio Located just southeast of Columbus, Fairfield County has activities that will suit every interest. Let your child’s imagination run wild at the AHA! Children’s Museum, and explore more than 60 hands-on exhibits. Children from 6 months to 8 years of age can become explorers, scientists, engineers and artists — and grownups will have fun, too! Get messy and make a masterpiece at Young at Art, an art studio that provides lessons throughout the year. Their Splatter Studio would make a great indoor spring break activity, especially on

a chilly day. Satisfy your family’s sugar cravings on the Sweet Tooth Trail, which will have you exploring ice cream, donut and candy shops all around Fairfield County. With close to 20 stops on this trail, you’ll need to pace yourself to avoid a tummy ache and sugar crash!

Fort Wayne, Indiana Families will find lots to explore in Fort Wayne, a city that sits among three rivers. A visit to Promenade Park is a must — this one-of-a-kind park features trails along the water,

a tree-top canopy trail, a kids' canal with an amazing playground, and opportunities to hop aboard a riverboat cruise or rent a kayak. In April, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo opens for the season, and Science Central — where children of all ages can participate in hands-on science exhibits — is open year round. A great way for first-timers to explore Fort Wayne is to download the apps for the Fort Wayne Public Art Trail and the Fort Wayne Outdoor Pass. Both are free ways to explore the natural beauty of Fort Wayne, and both offer users the opportunity to earn rewards as they check in to more locations.

Dublin, Ohio Want to feel lucky this spring break? Then harness the luck o’ the Irish with a visit to Dublin, a city just 20 minutes north of Columbus that celebrates all-things Irish all year long. Journey along the Irish Fairy Door Trail to find hidden fairy doors all around the city. Stops include places like Our Cupcakery, where you can make your own cupcakes, and Dublin Toy Emporium, where you can shop for the perfect toy to take home. Dublin is home to multiple waterfalls, which are free to explore and will allow you to see many of Dublin’s natural wonders. Make sure to stop at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, one of the largest zoos in the U.S. And no trip to an Irish-themed town would be complete without a proper Irish meal, which you’ll find at Dublin Village Tavern,

a family-friendly pub in Dublin’s historic district that has been around since 1889.

Terre Haute, Indiana Located east of the Illinois/ Indiana border, Terre Haute is a small town with lots to explore. Families will especially enjoy the Terre Haute Children’s Museum, which is three stories of nonstop fun. The museum was recently remodeled and now includes a huge ropes challenge course, which is open on the weekends. Experience great American art at Swope Art Museum, located in the heart of downtown. Visit on Tuesday afternoons to participate in one of their free Art Start programs for kids ages 3-5, which combine art and storytelling. When you visit Terre Haute, make sure to bring your bike and helmet! Griffith Bike

Park — designed for riders of all ages, skills and abilities — has been heralded as one of the best mountain bike trails in the state, and it’s located right here in Terre Haute.

Whether you are looking for a quick day trip or an extended weekend getaway, these drivable destinations have you covered this spring break! ABOVE CHILDREN AT STINGRAY BAY

PARENTING

WORDS BY THE AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION

First Time at Overnight Camp

Prepare your child for an independent, fun-filled overnight camp experience. One of the many joys of parenthood is helping children navigate new waters. And, while often these situations are met with hesitation, slight anxiety — or in the case of some first-time campers, homesickness — it is these moments that develop the skills needed in adulthood. New situations, such as going away to camp, serve as teachers in life’s classroom — developing leadership, self-esteem, teamwork, independence, and problem-solving. It’s important, even critical, for parents to help children overcome any feelings of hesitation in order to help them grow. Take camp, for example. From a child’s perspective, camp is fun, fun, fun! Parents know that camp provides immeasurable growth opportunities, and is a vital part of childhood. As the day approaches, even the most excited campers sometimes get nervous about being away from home.

“Homesickness is completely normal,” says Michael Thompson, consultant, author and psychologist. “If a child loves his or her parents and has a good home, why wouldn’t he or she feel some longing for mom, for dad, for the dog, or for home cooking?”

20

INDYSCHILD.COM I March 2022

· Pack a personal item or two from home, such as a stuffed animal.

· Avoid bribing behaviors.

Families send the wrong message when they link a successful stay at camp to a material object. Families should focus on the real rewards — like new found confidence and independence.

· Don’t plan an exit strategy. If a "rescue call" comes It is up to parents to help ease the transition to camp, and help their children grow from the experience. The American Camp Association suggests the following advice to help alleviate anxiety and get a jump start on life’s lessons.

· Encourage independence throughout the year. Practice separations, such as sleepovers at a friend's house, can simulate the camp environment.

· Involve children in the process of preparing for camp. The more they own the decision, the more comfortable they will feel being at camp.

· Understand the camp’s philosophy on how issues, such as homesickness, are addressed. Talk candidly with the camp director to understand his

/her perspective on the adjustment to camp life.

· Discuss what to expect at camp before leaving for camp. Consider role-playing anticipated situations, such as using a flashlight to find the bathroom.

· Reach an agreement ahead of time on calling each other, but make sure to honor the camp’s policy on phone calls.

· Send a note or care package ahead of time to arrive the first day of camp. Acknowledge missing your child, in a positive way. For example, saying "I am going to miss you, but I know that you will have a good time at camp," lets the camper know that families are thinking about them, but confident in their ability to adapt to camp.

from the child, offer calm reassurance and put the time frame into perspective.

While most incidents of homesickness pass quickly, parents know their child best. If parents have concerns (for example, the child is not eating or sleeping, or appears overly anxious), they should immediately talk to their camp director. Camp staff are trained to identify and ease homesickness, and are a valuable resource for parents, as well as campers.

PreschooL Practical tips for helping your child prepare for — and get excited about — starting school.

WORDS BY RACHAEL DUPREE

t happened just like that. You blinked, and all of a sudden, your baby — the precious newborn that only moments ago you were holding swaddled in your arms — is on their way to preschool. This milestone is a huge step for any family, and one that often comes with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. As you get ready for that first day of school, acknowledge and validate any big feelings that arise in both your child and yourself — they come with the territory, after all — but remember, preparing for this adventure can also be tons of fun. Here are some tips for getting your little one pumped for their big day.

S C O P E O U T T H E C L A S S RO OM Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to preparing for your first time ever in a school setting. Many preschools offer the chance for your preschooler-to-be to get comfortable with their new teachers and classroom prior to their first day, whether that’s through an at-home visit from the teacher, a classroom orientation day, or even a short transition period, where your child incrementally works toward being in the classroom for a full day.

28

INDYSCHILD.COM I March 2022

Use these opportunities to gather as much information as you can to help your child adjust to the school setting. Learn the daily schedule, the bathroom procedure, and how mealtimes work. “Take pictures of the room and the child playing during the visit,” suggests Kelsey Livingston, owner and director of The Sapling School. “At home, the family can f lip through the photos together and talk about what the child is looking forward to the most.”

If your preschool doesn’t already offer these types of opportunities, don’t hesitate to ask for an informal sneak peek.

P L A Y P R ESC H O O L Children use play to process their emotions and better understand the world around them. What better way to help your child prepare for their first day of school than to “play preschool” with them at home? In fact, you may have already found yourself roped into this game. “Act out things like circle time, snack time or do a craft together,” says Laney Strain, lead multi-age teacher at IUPUI Center for Young Children. “And let your child lead the play as much as possible because it will be a good way to gauge how they are feeling about starting preschool.”

P L A N A G O O D BY E RO U T I N E P R A C T I C E “ B I G K I D” S K I L L S When looking forward to preschool, start giving your child more opportunities to practice their independence at home. Work on skills, like putting on their jacket or pulling up their pants, and build in wait time when your child asks for something, so they can work on that skill, as well. “Teachers are great about helping children and teaching them how to do these things,” Strain says. “But it will give your child a sense of self-confidence to already know how to do things for themselves [and will be a huge help for the teacher].”

P R E P SC H O O L S U P P L I ES Taking your child shopping to pick out a new lunchbox, backpack or snazzy outfit for their first day of school is always a fun way to kick off the school year. “This allows them some ownership over their school belongings, some control over how their first day will go, and some excitement to use the new items they picked out themselves,” Livingston says. The night before, let them help in packing their lunch and laying out their outfit for the morning, prioritizing their feelings of comfort and control over your desire for the perfect first-day-of school photo.

One of the hardest things about the first day of school — and maybe something that’s already causing your child anxiety — is the drop-off. Prepare yourself to provide a clear and loving goodbye to your child to give them a sense of trust, but don’t linger. However, consider creating a goodbye routine with your child — a combination of physical gestures like hugs, kisses, high fives and dance moves — to give them a sense of ownership over the separation and to bring some levity to the moment.

P I C K U P A BOOK If you’re still looking for ways to prepare your child for what to expect at preschool, picture books are a great way to introduce new concepts to children. “There are lots of stories available about the first day of school or preschool that will help your child,” Strain says. “Check some books out at the local library and sit down and read them together. Ask your child questions about the book and encourage them to ask questions, as well.” If you can find a book with characters that share commonalities with your child, even better, adds Livingston.

Starting preschool comes with a lot of fun firsts for your child. As they get acclimated to their classroom and begin to make friends, their excitement for this new phase of life will shine. Enjoy the moment. Before you know it, they’ll be donning a cap and gown and on their way toward an even bigger adventure.

TEENS & TWEENS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Tips for Avoiding Peer Pressure Help your adolescent make good decisions and stay on the right path.

just saying you do not feel well (stomach ache, headache, etc). Peers may give you a hard time for saying you are not OK with the choices they are making, but usually do not question illness. For older teens with technology access, having a safe word is another tool so the parent knows to come pick up their child, or to call with a rehearsed script that they need to go home.

If the situation is at school, they can hopefully seek a trusted adult to help diffuse the situation. A simple excuse to go to the restroom is another easy quick exit strategy.

“You are who you hang with.” Maybe you heard this saying, or something similar to it, repeated to you regularly when you were younger. Maybe it didn’t really make a lot of sense at the time, but my guess is that it makes perfect sense now. Throughout our lives, the people we choose to hang around with inf luence us, in both positive and negative ways, and this is true for our tweens and teens, too. With technological advances, like social media, this pressure may be even more prevalent in our kids’ lives than it has been with past

generations. As parents, we want to help them navigate the challenges that arise and to learn how to recognize the positive and negative inf luences in their lives.

of social media, I feel peer pressure is even trickling down to younger aged children. Peer pressure can be both positive and negative!

Rebekah Frazer, school counselor and license eligible mental health therapist in Brownsburg, answers some questions on this important topic and offers some insight on how to help our tweens and teens both recognize, and manage, peer pressure when it arises.

What do you recommend kids do when faced with peer pressure?

What are some things teens and tweens should know about peer pressure? Peer pressure is something all teens and tweens face at some point in their lives. With the rise

I encourage young people to consider the peers they are surrounding themselves with. Are these people making mostly positive or negative choices? Our friends' choices make an impact on our daily lives and our outcomes. I advise my students and even my own children if there is something that makes them uncomfortable, there are ways to remove yourself from the situation. One strategy I like is

How should parents talk to their teens about this subject? I encourage parents to talk to their children daily about their friends and ask about both good and bad experiences during their day. I would ask their children if their friends are making positive choices, and if anything during the day made their child uncomfortable. I like to ask these questions on the way home with my daughters in the car versus just turning on the radio and zoning out. I encourage my students, clients and my own children to talk to trusted adults about their feelings so it becomes normal to them.

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY LAUREL PRICE

Local Spotlight: Hallie Strong

This Noblesville nonprofit is on a mission to outfit the feet of every cancer patient with the fun socks they need (and deserve) for treatment. When Bethany and Kevin Hart became pregnant in 2016, they were ecstatic. After careful consideration, they decided the time was right to expand their family and were expecting their first child. What they didn’t realize was soon their world would be turned inside out as they fought to save Bethany and their baby, a journey that ultimately led them to starting Hallie Strong, a foundation to support cancer patients nationwide. Following a routine prenatal exam, Bethan received a call that the results of her pap smear were abnormal, but was assured it wasn’t concerning. “They told me, ‘You’re pregnant, and pregnancy does crazy things to your body,’” Bethany says. “We weren’t worried.” At 16 weeks pregnant, Bethany was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cervical cancer, a diagnosis that likely would have gone undiscovered had it not been for her pregnancy. Doctors told Bethany that she would not survive her pregnancy without an emergency cesarean section and immediate cancer treatments. At 19 weeks, the Hart’s baby was delivered, but sadly, was too premature to survive. “I live every day knowing that she saved my

“When you’re in the hospital, socks are often your only piece of personal clothing — they are something you can control in a situation where you’ve lost all control,” she says. When the story of her mismatched socks spread to friends and family, she often received them as gifts and said she felt the support and love of those people cheering her on.

Since 2018, Hallie Strong has sent more than 2,000 socks, free of charge, to cancer patients around the country. “Anyone can request socks, for themselves or a loved one,” Bethany says.

life,” Bethany says. “That’s why it became so clear to me that I wanted to do something to honor her legacy.”

Immediately after losing their baby, a daughter named Hallie, Bethany began the fight for her life, which consisted of a radical hysterectomy, five rounds of chemotherapy and 28 rounds of radiation simultaneously. Though consumed by survival, two things kept her motivated: the desire to make Hallie’s brief life mean something and her family’s unending humor. It was her family’s teasing about her mismatched socks during treatments that later became the inspiration for their foundation, Hallie Strong, through which cancer patients can receive socks.

Practically, socks provide warmth in a chilly hospital, Bethany explains. But personally, they provide a greater emotional impact.

Hallie’s 5th birthday (her due date) is March 31, and annually Bethany and Kevin celebrate Hallie’s Day of Hope and ask others to perform random acts of kindness to honor Hallie. “It is the hardest day for us,” Bethany says. “In creating this movement, it makes the day about hope.” Bethany follows the #HalliesDayofHope hashtag and reads every message sent. In 2017, Bethany was declared cancer free, and today she and Kevin live in Noblesville with their two young boys. If you’d like to support Hallie Strong, consider making a donation, requesting socks, hosting a sock drive, or celebrate #HalliesDayofHope on March 31. LITTLE FOODIES

WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE

Nap Snacks Key lime pie Kit Kat. Turkey-flavored Cheetos. Cinnamon bun Snickers. Bubble gum-flavored M&Ms. The wacky candies and treats you will find at Nap Snacks sound like food from a fever dream. Thankfully, all of these kooky-sounding concoctions really exist, and you can find them and more at this new shop on Indy’s northside. Nap Snacks supplies hard-to-find, exotic and imported snacky foods from around the world. You will find lots of familiar brands (Oreo, Skittles, Ritz, Twizzlers) but in flavors that you will typically only find in other countries, including many Japanese imports. There's a whole wall of just chips and popcorn: sushi chips, ketchup chips, pizza popcorn and more. For you cereal heads, there's also several cereal options, like Space Jam cereal (yes, that exists), caramel Corn Pops and Unicorn Froot Loops. In the refrigerated case, you'll find beverages you've probably never seen before, like cherry Sprite, Firework Faygo and yogurt Fanta.

For those who love surprises, Nap Snacks also offers a mystery box in three different sizes. The box contains an arrangement of random exotic snacks. One way to introduce children to other cultures is through food. It’s a way to show how, even through our differences, we also share many similarities. So the next time you’re stocking up on snacks, stop by Nap Snacks and pick up a treat from a country and culture that’s different from yours. You might just find a new foreign favorite. 1323 W 86th St, Indianapolis getnapsnacks.com
