Marching Right into March Looking back on these last, dwindling days of winter, I’m glad to say that my family and I have checked off almost all of the boxes on our winter bucket list. Sledding? Check! Ice skating? Check! Making snow ice cream? Check!

what we want to do and where we want to go for a quick spring trip. If you’re getting the itch to get out of town, too, then check out “Take a Spring Break Road Trip” on page 32. We give you a few ideas for some springbreak destinations that are road-trip worthy, with activities and fun for everyone. Whether you’re thinking of a quick day trip or a weekend getaway, we have you covered.

And that’s not even the whole list. Whew, we did a lot of wintery things this winter. We made the best of the cold, gray days. Which is why I’m not at all sad to say “see ya next year” to winter and welcome spring with open arms. I’m ready to march right into March.

Where are you traveling to this spring? Let us know at editor@ohparent.com! We’re always looking for new places to explore around southwest Ohio and beyond. Have a marvelous March!

One of the ways we’ll be greeting the warmer days of spring is with a good dose of travel. Winter days have had my family and I feeling stuck in a rut, but now that it’s getting warmer — and with spring break on the horizon — we are starting to map out

LITTLE FOODIES

WORDS BY REBECCA MATTESON

Oakley Kitchen Food Hall Located in Oakley, the Oakley Kitchen Food Hall features eight restaurants with their own eclectic twist on modern cuisine. These eight forces came together in support of a new concept of a firstof-it’s-kind standalone Cincinnati food hall. Each kitchen is fully equipped for local businesses to showcase their famous plates under one roof. While little ones tuck into a delicious slice of Padrino’s pizza or an overflowing portion of fresh-cut La Petite Frite French fries, parents can ignite their taste buds with something new. Choices range from Hawaiian and Syrian cuisine, traditional American fare burgers, BBQ , Italian, Indian and New Orleans-style Creole. At Onolicious Hawaii, the most tender Shoyu chicken and sticky rice will have your palate exploding. Grab a keiki (kids) plate to share or try the “Kanak Attack,” three

protein portions of Momi’s beef sticks, Shoyu chicken and Pearl City pulled pork. At Parts & Labor, Chef Anjos and Chef Miller serve up flavorful, smoky, new-school barbecue with bold spices. Need a quick grab and go? Family meals at Parts & Labor include build-your-own brisket sandwiches, Huli chicken box, BBQ and rice bar, and Korean ribs. “The Market Over There” is a finger’s point away when searching for quick, ready-made treats and sides. The market features local products like iced cookies, cheesecake, ravioli, vegan and gluten-free desserts, granola and Cincy favorites. The Oakley Kitchen Food Hall is more than a quick place to grab a bite with your family. It’s a diversive spotlight for some of our city’s best and brightest chefs.

PARENTING

BROUGHT TO YOU BY DAYTON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

Being Kind Might Help Your Child Become Happier Kind children may have a lasting positive impact on others.

Ways That Children Can Practice Kindness

Do you aspire to have nice children? It may be even more important to raise kind children. Children who are nice know that they should say “thank you” at the right moments, and they try to treat others well. Kind children possess something more: They’re considerate, generous and concerned enough to try to improve the lives of others, without expecting anything in return. When your child is kind, they may be viewed more positively by their friends, relatives, teachers, coaches and classmates. Their words or actions may have a lasting positive impact on the people whom they’re trying to help. Additionally, your child’s acts of kindness may have enduring positive benefits on their own mental and physical health. Kind children may experience: · Increased happiness levels · A greater sense of purpose in life · A more developed sense of empathy · Feeling more connected to others · Lowered stress levels

There are a number of ways that children can be kind in their everyday lives. If you’re looking for ideas to get your child started, suggest they try any or all of the following: · Draw a nice picture for a friend or relative who has had a rough day. · Compliment people when they display qualities that you admire.

How Parents Can Raise Kind Children Kindness is better demonstrated than taught. One of the most effective ways your child can learn about kindness is by following your example. Kids take mental notes when observing their parents, including your attitude about helping others and the way you relate to friends, relatives and strangers. When you consistently display kindness in your interactions with people, it can inspire your child to practice kindness, as well. If you demonstrate how easy it is to incorporate kindness into your life, it might become secondnature to your child.

· Decreased risk of depression · A boost to the immune system · Lowered blood-pressure levels

When your child is young and you’re performing acts of kindness, it helps if you explain aloud what you’re doing and why. Suggest that you perform kind acts together, such as writing a thank-you note to a friend, picking up litter or noticing when a child on the playground seems lonely and could use a playmate. As your child gets older, they might come up with their own ideas to perform acts of kindness, which they may do on their own or with you. Remind your child they might not get thanked for what they do, but kindness feels good, so they should want to continue.

· Get to know the new kid at school, so that they feel more connected to someone. · Hold doors open for people. · Volunteer at a food pantry, animal shelter or local service organization. · Pick up trash on your favorite hiking trail or in your neighborhood. · Send a heartfelt thank-you note to someone who did something kind. · Put a quarter in a stranger’s parking meter.

Share how you and your family showed kindness this month by using #OnOurSleeves on social media.

PreschooL Practical tips for helping your child prepare for — and get excited about — starting school.

WORDS BY RACHAEL DUPREE

t happened just like that. You blinked, and all of a sudden, your baby — the precious newborn that only moments ago you were holding swaddled in your arms — is on their way to preschool. This milestone is a huge step for any family, and one that often comes with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. As you get ready for that first day of school, acknowledge and validate any big feelings that arise in both your child and yourself — they come with the territory, after all — but remember, preparing for this adventure can also be tons of fun. Here are some tips for getting your little one pumped for their big day.

S C O P E O U T T H E C L A S S RO OM Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to preparing for your first time ever in a school setting. Many preschools offer the chance for your preschooler-to-be to get comfortable with their new teachers and classroom prior to their first day, whether that’s through an at-home visit from the teacher, a classroom orientation day, or even a short transition period, where your child incrementally works toward being in the classroom for a full day.

Use these opportunities to gather as much information as you can to help your child adjust to the school setting, recommends Jenn Horwitz, education coordinator at The Arlitt Child Development Center. Learn the daily schedule, the bathroom procedure and how mealtimes work. “You can then compare this information with your child’s previous care experiences, pointing out similarities and differences,” she says. If your preschool doesn’t already offer these types of opportunities, don’t hesitate to ask for an informal sneak peek.

P L A Y P R ESC H O O L Children use play to process their emotions and better understand the world around them. What better way to help your child prepare for their first day of school than to “play preschool” with them at home? In fact, you may have already found yourself roped into this game. When playing preschool, act out things like circle time, snack time and craft time together. By allowing your child to lead the play as much as possible, you can get a sense of how they are feeling about the big day and address any issues that arise.

P L A N A G O O D BY E RO U T I N E P R A C T I C E “ B I G K I D” S K I L L S When looking forward to preschool, start giving your child more opportunities to practice their independence at home. “When they ask for help putting on their shoes or gloves, encourage them to try first before helping,” Horwitz says. Also, build in wait time when your child asks you for something, she recommends, so they can work on that skill, as well. While your child’s teacher will likely help them learn these skills, already knowing what to do will give your child a confidence boost that can help ease the transition—plus, it will be a big help for the teacher.

P R E P SC H O O L S U P P L I ES Taking your child shopping to pick out a new lunchbox, backpack or snazzy outfit for their first day of school is always a fun way to kick off the school year. Then the night before, let them help in packing their lunch and laying out their outfit for the morning. “While we may be tempted to nail those first day of school photos with perfect outfits, it is more important that your child feels comfortable and in control of some aspects of their day, including what they wear,” Horwitz says.

16

ohParent.com I March 2022

One of the hardest things about the first day of school — and maybe something that’s already causing your child anxiety — is the drop-off. Prepare yourself to provide a clear and loving goodbye to your child before leaving. “Trying to sneak away without your child noticing will undermine your child’s sense of trust in their new care situation and will make the process of accepting this new transition take longer,” Horwitz says. However, to make the transition more special, she says you and your child can work together to create a goodbye routine — a combination of physical gestures like hugs, kisses, high fives and dance moves — to give your child a sense of ownership over the separation and to bring some levity to the moment.

P I C K U P A BOOK If you’re still looking for ways to prepare your child for what to expect at preschool, picture books are a great way to introduce new concepts to children. Pick up a couple books from the library about starting preschool, particularly choosing books with characters your child can relate to. A few that Horwitz recommends include Dad’s First Day by Mike Wohnoutka, Love by Corrinne Averiss, Mae’s First Day of School by Kate Berube, and Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. Starting preschool comes with a lot of fun firsts for your child. As they get acclimated to their classroom and begin to make friends, their excitement for this new phase of life will shine. Enjoy the moment. Before you know it, they’ll be donning a cap and gown and on their way toward an even bigger adventure.

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY PAM FREEMAN

Local Spotlight: The Dragonfly Foundation

This Cincy-based nonprofit is helping families find a place to land after a pediatric cancer diagnosis. “Dragonfly gave our family things to look forward to. If I look back at the last year, yes, my child had cancer and we were going through all these terrible things, but we also have all these awesome memories of seeing our children experience new things for the first time. Those would not have been true without Dragonfly.”

Since 2010, the Dragonfly Foundation has been serving patients and their families affected by pediatric cancer. The Foundation’s motto is “We do what we can, when we can, as often as we can!” From creating happy distractions and memories to providing a home away from home, the Dragonfly Foundation helps to create a sense of normalcy in trying times. Southwest Ohio Parent talked to Greg Vehr, senior vice president of development at the Dragonfly Foundation, about this nonprofit that’s helping families find a place to land after a pediatric cancer diagnosis.

How did the Dragonfly Foundation get started? After enduring the grueling diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma stage 3 with their son, Matt, the Neitzke family felt committed to assisting other families going through childhood cancer experiences. Together, Christine Neitzke, her husband, Jim, and a friend started working with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on how best to do that. Since then, Dragonfly has grown considerably and continues to provide comfort and joy to the families of pediatric cancer patients.

18

ohParent.com I March 2021

What do you have planned for the future? Our mission is singularly focused on supporting families facing a pediatric cancer diagnosis. We strive to enhance those programs and services and make them available to more families.

How do families connect with you? When families are admitted to the hospital with a cancer diagnosis, they are given a big blue care bag from the Dragonfly Foundation. The bag contains personal care items and an application to become a Dragonfly. Additionally, social workers inform families about opportunities available to them outside the hospital. The family then decides whether to contact Dragonfly.

What impact does the Dragonfly Foundation have on the families it serves? The impact TDF has on families fighting cancer is best said by the families themselves: “Your generosity has given [my son] days when he can relax and forget about the enemy and the battlefield.”

How did Hall of Fame Reds Broadcaster Marty Brennaman get involved?

“[Dragonfly] helps you get through the day knowing you’ve created memories, other than being in the hospital and having cancer and having to be treated like you’re sick, all the time. It’s very important, and The Dragonfly Foundation has given us that.”

Former Reds radio broadcaster and celebrity Marty Brennaman lost a bet to Reds players and coaches about whether the team could win 10 straight games. His friend made him aware of Dragonfly and its mission, and Marty agreed to honor the Dragonfly Foundation and children fighting cancer when he had his head shaved after a Reds game at Great American Ball Park in 2012.

How can people help the Dragonfly Foundation? Donations are welcome and will have an immediate impact on families. For more information, go to dragonfly.org.

PARENTING

WORDS BY THE AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION

First Time at Overnight Camp

Prepare your child for an independent, fun-filled overnight camp experience. One of the many joys of parenthood is helping children navigate new waters. And, while often these situations are met with hesitation, slight anxiety — or in the case of some first-time campers, homesickness — it is these moments that develop the skills needed in adulthood. New situations, such as going away to camp, serve as teachers in life’s classroom — developing leadership, self-esteem, teamwork, independence, and problem-solving. It’s important, even critical, for parents to help children overcome any feelings of hesitation in order to help them grow. Take camp, for example. From a child’s perspective, camp is fun, fun, fun! Parents know that camp provides immeasurable growth opportunities, and is a vital part of childhood. As the day approaches, even the most excited campers sometimes get nervous about being away from home.

“Homesickness is completely normal,” says Michael Thompson, consultant, author and psychologist. “If a child loves his or her parents and has a good home, why wouldn’t he or she feel some longing for mom, for dad, for the dog, or for home cooking?”

22

ohParent.com I March 2022

· Pack a personal item or two from home, such as a stuffed animal.

· Avoid bribing behaviors.

Families send the wrong message when they link a successful stay at camp to a material object. Families should focus on the real rewards — like new found confidence and independence.

· Don’t plan an exit strategy. If a "rescue call" comes It is up to parents to help ease the transition to camp, and help their children grow from the experience. The American Camp Association suggests the following advice to help alleviate anxiety and get a jump start on life’s lessons.

· Encourage independence throughout the year. Practice separations, such as sleepovers at a friend's house, can simulate the camp environment.

· Involve children in the process of preparing for camp. The more they own the decision, the more comfortable they will feel being at camp.

· Understand the camp’s philosophy on how issues, such as homesickness, are addressed. Talk candidly with the camp director to understand his

/her perspective on the adjustment to camp life.

· Discuss what to expect at camp before leaving for camp. Consider role-playing anticipated situations, such as using a flashlight to find the bathroom.

· Reach an agreement ahead of time on calling each other, but make sure to honor the camp’s policy on phone calls.

· Send a note or care package ahead of time to arrive the first day of camp. Acknowledge missing your child, in a positive way. For example, saying "I am going to miss you, but I know that you will have a good time at camp," lets the camper know that families are thinking about them, but confident in their ability to adapt to camp.

from the child, offer calm reassurance and put the time frame into perspective.

While most incidents of homesickness pass quickly, parents know their child best. If parents have concerns (for example, the child is not eating or sleeping, or appears overly anxious), they should immediately talk to their camp director. Camp staff are trained to identify and ease homesickness, and are a valuable resource for parents, as well as campers.

TRAVEL

WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE

Take a Spring Break Road Trip Family-friendly destinations that are just a short drive away!

Terre Haute, Indiana

Spring break is almost here, and your family is probably eager to get out of town and explore someplace new. Luckily, southwest Ohio is surrounded by many family-friendly destinations that have something for everyone. Here are just a few ideas for a quick trip this spring.

Fairfield County, Ohio Located just southeast of Columbus, Fairfield County has activities that will suit every interest. Let your child’s imagination run wild at the AHA! Children’s Museum, and explore more than 60 hands-on exhibits. Children from 6 months to 8 years of age can become explorers, scientists, engineers and artists — and grownups will have fun, too! Get messy and make a masterpiece at Young at Art, an art studio that provides lessons throughout the year. Their Splatter Studio would make a great indoor spring break activity, especially on a chilly day. Satisfy your family’s sugar cravings on the Sweet Tooth Trail, which will have you exploring ice cream, donut and candy shops all around Fairfield County. With close to 20 stops on this trail, you’ll need to pace yourself to avoid a tummy ache and sugar crash!

ohParent.com I March 2022

Fort Wayne, Indiana

Dublin, Ohio

Families will find lots to explore in Fort Wayne, a city that sits among three rivers. A visit to Promenade Park is a must — this one-of-akind park features trails along the water, a tree-top canopy trail, a kids' canal with an amazing playground, and opportunities to hop aboard a riverboat cruise or rent a kayak. In April, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo opens for the season, and Science Central — where children of all ages can participate in hands-on science exhibits — is open year round. A great way for first-timers to explore Fort Wayne is to download the apps for the Fort Wayne Public Art Trail and the Fort Wayne Outdoor Pass.
