LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Decking the Halls

If my kids made all of the decisions, our house would be THAT house during the holidays: the one with all the lights and all the decorations. But my children don’t pay the electric bill, so our outdoor decorations are a little more subdued.

The Christmas tree, though? That is my kids’ territory. I’ve learned to surrender my visions of a perfectly coordinated, expertly decorated Christmas tree once I had kids. Instead, I let my children go at it. You want to put all of the red decorations in a clump at the bottom of the tree? Sure. You want to completely ignore the back of the tree and put all of the ornaments on the front? Yes, of course.

Sometimes, my children will also find things in their room to add to the tree. It’s not uncommon to see a sock, a stick, or a fidget spinner hanging off the branches.

Many of our ornaments look a little rough. My children have the best intentions, but they can be hard on their belongings. And things like delicate ornaments? Forget it. Don’t look too closely at our tree, or you’ll find lots of glued-together pieces, a Santa with one eye, a Nutcracker prince missing his legs. But the thing is: My kids love their tree. They don’t see all of these imperfections — they just see a tree full of memories.

I’m sure one day, I’ll have that pictureperfect tree of my dreams. But for now, I have a one-of-a-kind tree decorated with love and enthusiasm. And honestly, that’s more important!

Happy holidays!

California Woods Nature Preserve

alifornia Woods is one Cincinnati Parks’ East Side parks — and a true Cincinnati treasure.

The nature preserve is nestled in the city of California, OH. (Did you know there was a California, OH?!) California is one of the City of Cincinnati’s 52 neighborhoods; it’s a small river town located at the confluence of the Little Miami and Ohio Rivers, nestled between Lunken Airport and Coney Island. The eponymous Nature Preserve is smack in the center of its city limits.

The nature preserve kind of sneaks up on you: One minute, you’re admiring planes and boats, and the next, you’re turning onto a one-lane dirt road and into a whole other world.

California Woods is 133 acres of sprawling, sun-drenched woods, reminiscent of Hocking Hills. It’s hilly and full of wildlife. There are six hiking trails, ranging from .16-mile Twin Oaks Trail to the mile-long Junction

Trail, so there’s something for families of all ages. Adventurous families will love the Trillium Trail, a half-mile-long loop that runs deep into the forest and features a 360-degree view of California Woods.

California Woods Nature Center is tucked away in the forests of California Woods, but be aware that it’s only open when there’s public programming happening. You can find a list of the programs taking place on the park’s website. The nature center houses offices, animals and lots of nature education supplies for programs for all ages.

Experience Holiday Lights

At Louisville Mega Cavern, enjoy Lights Under Louisville, a beloved holiday tradition with over 7 million points of light illuminating the cavern’s vast spaces. And no holiday season is complete without a visit to the Pyramid Hill Lights in Hamilton, a unique art and nature filled route lit up by installations by local artists and over one million lights.

Mail a Letter to Santa

Santa and his elves have been busy placing mailboxes all over southwest Ohio. Make the Big Guy’s job easier by writing him a letter and letting him know what you’re wishing for this year! In Dayton, you’ll find a Santa mailbox inside the leasing office at The Properties of Wright Field until December 13 or during A Carillon Christmas through December 30. Near Cincy, Santa mailboxes are located at various Kenton County Libraries and the Kenton County Courthouse. Of course, letters are welcomed all year long at the Santa Claus Museum & Village in Santa Claus, Indiana!

Cut Your Own Christmas Tree

There’s something magical about picking the perfect Christmas tree with your family. Whether you decide on a pre-cut Fraser Fir, humble Charlie Brown special or cut your own 8-foot pine, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect centerpiece for Santa to pile presents under. Around southwest Ohio, you’ll find Bartels Farm in Hamilton, Doc Miller's Christmas Trees in Alliance, Spring Valley Tree Farm in Spring Valley, and Tom Mitts Christmas Trees in Newport, Kentucky, among others. Many of these tree farms also have family activities to enjoy during the weekends, too.

Go Ice Skating

Bundle up and spend some time outdoors doing the ultimate wintertime pastime: ice skating! There are multiple places to strap on your skates, including downtown Middleton’s Holiday Whopla, with special days where you can skate with Santa. Deck the Y’alls at Thomas Moore Stadium in Florence, Kentucky, offers an ice skating rink as well as lots of other holiday fun through December. And don’t miss the UC Health Ice Rink in Downtown Cincy, or in Dayton, the Dayton Holiday Festival, with MetroParks ice rink, holiday train display and lots more through December.

Enjoy a Holiday Train

Watch model trains chug through villages, around mountains, and through tunnels during Heritage Village Museum’s train days on December 18-20. Check out Holiday Junction featuring the Duke Energy Holiday Trains at Cincinnati Museum Center

now through January 6, or Virginia Kettering’s Holiday Train Display at Stratacache Tower on the corner of 2nd and Main Streets in Dayton through the holidays. Experience the last year of the largest indoor train display one last time at EnterTRAINment Junction’s Christmas at the Junction, which closes for good January 5. Want to take a ride on a real train? Then hop aboard the North Pole Express during an hour-long train ride starting at LM&M Railroad in Lebanon.

Stroll Through a Christmas Market

Celebrate the magic and wonder of the holiday season at a Christmas market! The Cincinnati Christkindlmarkt features food, beverage, merchandise, holiday lights, and musical entertainment with a European — yet truly Cincy — holiday twist, and it runs through January 5 at Moerlein Ale House. In Dayton, Dayton Liederkranz Turner Christkindlmarkt on December 14-15, where you can wrap up your holiday shopping with a special gift from this old-world-style Christmas market.

These are just some of the great ways to celebrate the holidays in southwest Ohio. Go out and make the most of this merry season!

Last-Minute Holiday Trips

Consider one of these drivable destinations that would make a perfect quick trip out of town.

Sometimes, the best holiday memories come from getting out of the house with the whole family. Although the cost of traveling during the holiday season can be a bit jarring, a holiday trip is possible without breaking the bank! The following places make great last-minute holiday trips because they are easy to get to by vehicle and deliver on family fun.

Brown County, Indiana

There is something for everyone in this adorable town that’s a home to naturalists and artists. Bonus: It feels like the backdrop of a Hallmark movie in December! Hike the winter-friendly trails at Brown County State Park, then head to the park’s nature center to learn about local wildlife. A must-stop for families is Brown County Bikes, because the park is as thrilling as any amusement park from the seat of a sturdy mountain bike. Grab a hot chocolate from Olde Bartley House, then take a stroll through the charming streets of Nashville while peeking into the deckedout shops. Don’t miss a sleigh ride through town (weather permitting) or some DIY ornaments at Our Little World Studio. There are many great places to grab a meal, including Big Woods Pizza, which serves drool-worthy, wood-fired pizzas. It’s the perfect place for a warm, family meal. Stay at the Abe Martin Lodge and Cabins at Brown County State Park, where guests will find rustic charm, plus an on-site water park for all-season splashes.

Louisville, Kentucky

Every family’s visit to Louisville should definitely include a stop at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. Here, baseball fans can see how bats are made and even take home a mini bat. If you’ve ever played baseball or softball, you will get a kick out of this museum. It is the perfect combination of sport, art, and science! During the holidays, head to Holiday Zip Lines at Louisville Mega Cavern for an underground holiday light and music show unlike any other you’ve ever seen. This rollicking amusement park is underneath the city in a giant limestone cave. Then, bundle up and head to Christmas Tree Lane at Louisville Waterfront Park Surrounded by evergreens, this glimmering public park is perfect for a holiday stroll along the river. Finish your walk with a stop at Please and Thank You. We dare you to find a better chocolate chip cookie out there! Stay at the Galt House Hotel, which is known for its holiday decor and activities, like breakfast with Santa.

Detroit, Michigan

Detroit, aka Motor City, is the birthplace of the automotive industry. A stop at The Henry Ford Museum and Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village is a must. Beyond the car exhibits, there are holiday displays that rival anything found at Disney, from real-life old-timey holiday villages to a festive steam train ride. The museum is right in Dearborn which is famous for its Middle Eastern food. Locals love Sahara where guests rave about the authentic Lebanese dishes and the warmth of the staff. Sports fans should absolutely catch a Detroit Red Wings game. Little Caesars Arena in The District Detroit, a buzzy and always-fun-spot to hang in the city, puts on one heck of a hockey show. Within walking distance is JoJo’s Shake Bar, an entertaining burger and shake shack that kids and adults will love. Stay just outside of Detroit in a completely made-over Catholic seminary at St. John’s Resort This gorgeous resort is a popular wedding destination because of the many beautiful gardens and the grand elegant nature of the resort. Families will love the pool area and on-site restaurants.

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville isn’t called Music City for nothing. One step outside on Broadway Street and you can hear the city singing. The cozy twang of the locals will dish hospitality like you’ve never experienced anywhere else. (All with a side of biscuits and a dollop of bourbon flavored honey!) For actual biscuits that will have you after-Thanksgiving-dinner satiated, head to Biscuit Love. The holidays are the perfect time to cheer on the Nashville Predators hockey team at Bridgestone Arena. Make sure to grab one of the colossal yellow cowboy hats! Stay at The Grand Hyatt for amenities like the spa, valet parking, endless coffee and tea, warm chocolate chip cookies, indoor pool, luxurious beds, and perfect bathrooms, along with the ease of being able to walk almost anywhere in downtown Nashville.

GIVING GIFTS OF EXPERIENCE

Christmas is not just about toys, but about time spent together.

Christmas is my favorite time of year. But over the years, I’ve noticed something: The magic of the season isn’t found in the presents wrapped under the tree, but in the moments spent together. As a child, I don’t remember most of my gifts over the years. So as a parent, it was easy to fall into the trap of filling the house with toys, trendy clothes and techy gadgets.

My husband and I realized very early on that we only have 18 Christmas seasons with our children before they leave the nest. As my kids have grown, we have come to realize that the joy of Christmas has become baking cookies and candy, cuddling up with hot cocoa while watching movies, and driving around to see Christmas lights. Let’s look at some options that don’t have to break the bank to start some new traditions.

IDEAS FOR BABIES AND TODDLERS

For the littlest ones, it’s easy to think that toys equal happiness. And true — there’s nothing like seeing the delight on a toddler’s face when they get a new toy. But how long does that excitement really last? Babies and toddlers have short attention spans, and often, the toy that seemed like the perfect gift ends up forgotten in a pile just a few days after Christmas.

What I found was between our home, grandparents, aunts and uncles, the toys piled up quickly and the gift opening was a chore. Toddlers don’t need more stuff to feel joy — they need us. They crave connection, laughter and play.

One of the best gifts my husband ever gave to my kids wasn’t a toy, but a simple day spent outside playing in the snow. They built snowmen and made snow angels while I baked cookies and made

warm stovetop hot chocolate. That day brought more smiles, giggles and lasting memories than any toy ever could.

For a few years, we took the kids on experiences for Christmas at our local zoo or a local children’s museum. A few times we enjoyed a local indoor waterpark when the kids were little. One year we let the kids pick lunch and they eagerly wanted McDonald’s. They still talk about that day, so we knew we were onto something.

More ideas for toddlers:

• Museums with holiday themed exhibits

• Lights at the zoo

• Visit Santa at a local mall or museum

• The Polar Express-themed train experiences

IDEAS FOR ELEMENTARYAGED KIDS

As kids grow into elementary school age, the wish lists get longer. Video games, action figures, dolls — it seems like the options are endless. But here’s the thing: the more stuff we pile on, the less meaningful each individual gift becomes. I've learned that elementary-aged kids still have the same basic need for connection, even though their interests may have expanded.

We decided to start traditions that included pajamas, hot cocoa, and late-night drives to see Christmas lights. When they grew up, they were in the kitchen by my side baking cookies and candy while we listened to music. Decorating the house the day after Thanksgiving, gingerbread houses on the last day of school, and our traditional Christmas movie checklist are memories our kids talk about year after year. The toys? Not so much.

An easy win is always to take them on a tour of downtown. Dinner in the city, walking the streets to see the lights and decorated shops, and enjoying hot chocolate at a local cafe are

highlights and low cost. This is a tradition our kids have asked to repeat again and again.

More ideas for elementary-aged children:

• Holiday-themed food experiences, like breakfast with Santa, high tea or cookie decorating

• Pajama night driving for Christmas lights

• Special holiday movie showings

IDEAS FOR TWEENS AND TEENS

By the time kids hit their tween and teen years, finding the right gift becomes even more challenging. Their interests change so quickly, and they’re more likely to outgrow whatever you buy within months. At this stage, it’s more important than ever to find ways to stay connected. While it’s tempting to buy the latest tech gadgets or trendy clothes, I’ve found that what my older kids really value is the time we spend together.

Teenagers, in particular, can be tricky to shop for, but they still want (and need) quality time, even if they don’t always say it. Last Christmas, instead of giving my tween and teen a bunch of material gifts, we planned intentional time together. We traveled to Chicago and went to Shedd Aquarium, ate Chicago pizza, and saw Hamilton. It showed them that no matter how old they get, they’re never too old for family time. And it turns out they still love jumping on hotel beds!

More ideas for tweens and teens:

• Holiday show at a local theatre

• Walking the downtown streets to see Christmas lights and trees

• Historical society or museum holiday exhibits

• Orchestra or musical concert

So this Christmas, I’m making a promise to myself — and my family — to focus more on experiences and less on things. Because in the end, the toys will fade, but the memories we

create together will last forever.

Element Eatery

aving options is important when dining out with our little ones. When one kid is strictly mac and cheese only and the other gets their fill from chocolate chip cookies, eating out can put us in a bind. That’s why in the thick of parenthood, a dining hall experience is the perfect spot to make sure everyone in the family has a meal they love.

Insert Element Eatery, a sleek, decor-inspired dining hall in Madisonville with 10 different food options from right here in Cincinnati. Options like burgers, pizza, tacos, ramen, pulled pork, wings, coffee, and gumbo fill the menus of Cincinnati’s premier food hall. Designed to have more space for seating and moving around, Element Eatery has pockets of quiet space for families to take up as much room as they need.

Its uniqueness lies in the opportunity to share many different meals and try new things! Sometimes kids can use just the right amount of encouragement to try new foods and a dining hall has plenty of diverse options to pull us out of our culinary comfort zones. Some kid-safe options

include those from a well-known pizzeria, Ramundos, small-batch macaroni and cheese from Kentucky’s Four Mile Pig, and chicken wings with fries from classic American Tela Encore.

Soul food, creole, LatinAmerican, authentic Mexican, and ramen are highlights of the menu if you’re in the mood for something other than American-fare. Transport yourself to New Orleans with a po-boy from Little Easy or keep heading south to Mexico with Taco Oso’s chicken pibil taco, inspired by the traditional Mexican pineapple and achiote spice dish, cochinita pibil. Perfect for the winter season, San Jeanetta’s Table is dishing up some food that touches your soul like the sweet potato mac bowl topped with chicken, a sweet potato glaze and tender chunks of sweet potato.

With many flavors of culture, live music, art exhibitions, and space intended for gathering, Element Eatery is a fun place to explore new menus under one roof.
