WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
If my kids made all of the decisions, our house would be THAT house during the holidays: the one with all the lights and all the decorations. But my children don’t pay the electric bill, so our outdoor decorations are a little more subdued.
The Christmas tree, though? That is my kids’ territory. I’ve learned to surrender my visions of a perfectly coordinated, expertly decorated Christmas tree once I had kids. Instead, I let my children go at it. You want to put all of the red decorations in a clump at the bottom of the tree? Sure. You want to completely ignore the back of the tree and put all of the ornaments on the front? Yes, of course.
Sometimes, my children will also find things in their room to add to the tree. It’s not uncommon to see a sock, a stick, or a fidget spinner hanging off the branches.
Many of our ornaments look a little rough. My children have the best intentions, but they can be hard on their belongings. And things like delicate ornaments? Forget it. Don’t look too closely at our tree, or you’ll find lots of glued-together pieces, a Santa with one eye, a Nutcracker prince missing his legs. But the thing is: My kids love their tree. They don’t see all of these imperfections — they just see a tree full of memories.
I’m sure one day, I’ll have that pictureperfect tree of my dreams. But for now, I have a one-of-a-kind tree decorated with love and enthusiasm. And honestly, that’s more important!
Happy holidays!

Local art studio aims to promote joyful and creative artwork.
WORDS BY SAMANTHA KUPIAINEN
B rightly Art Studio, an studio located in Brownsburg, provides classes, clubs, camps, parties and events to the community and beyond. The idea for the studio originated in 2017 when owner Laura Gambrel was struggling with the direction of her career. Feeling there was something new in her future and after a discussion with her therapist, she deduced that opening a local art studio was the next step in her career.
Gambrel’s art studio fruitions started in a rented room at her local library and shelter at her local park. She started hosting art workshops for kids with process art stations and messy art play, which became so popular, she was able to formally found the Brightly Art Studio that exists today in its two level unit on Main Street in Brownsburg.
The studio's instructors include a diverse group of women with various backgrounds. Many have experience in elementary education, art education, fine arts, children’s ministry, secondary education, family ministry, marketing, and more. All Brightly Art Studio instructors are trained in process art teaching principles, art education best practices and art therapy ideas.
Currently, the studio offers Art Club, Preschool Playgroup, Junior Art Club, Homeschool Art Club, Teen Art Club and more.
For Valentine’s Day, Brightly Art Studio is hosting a Funny and Fluffy Valentine Stuffie on Feb. 10. This 45-minute class allows participants the opportunity to glue, stuff and decorate a one-of-a-kind heartshaped monster stuffie.
On Feb. 10, Brightly is hosting a Galentine’s Day two-hour adult workshop, which will show participants how to paint, bead and glue a boho-style Cupid’s arrow wall hanging.

Over the past century, the museum has become a treasure trove of 130,000 objects — each with its own unique story to tell. This year, dive into the museum’s newest exhibit, Memories, Wonders, and Dreams: Stories from 100 Years, where 100 fascinating artifacts will be on display. From the museum’s first mascot to iconic pieces like the historic Carousel and Reuben Wells steam engine, your family can explore objects connected to arts, history, pop culture and natural science. It’s the perfect way to introduce your children to the
wonders of the past while igniting their curiosity for the future.
Children are naturally curious about the world, and educators often believe children can be more perceptive and observant than adults. “That is why we shouldn’t shy away from exposing children to beautifully rich and culturally diverse objects,” says Elyse Handel, early childhood education manager at The Children’s Museum. “Taking time to look and observe objects with young children can spark their curiosity, help them understand the past and present world, and can create opportunities for wonderful storytelling.”
“Looking at objects and discussing details or origins is a great way to introduce and expand a child’s vocabulary,” she continues. “As you observe objects and artifacts with young children, talk about the details. This includes the material, texture and attributes. Discuss what makes this object unique and special.”
A fun family project could be to create your own mascot that tells your family's story. Or, start a collection of something that is special and important to you. This could be coins, race cars, pins, magnets etc. Whatever it is, make sure you collect something to represent different stories and memories the whole family can share for years to come.
From a dazzling New Year's party to wintertime thrills and a oncein-a-lifetime centennial celebrations, start planning now for a year packed with family-friendly fun
and unforgettable memories!
Consider one of these drivable destinations that would make a perfect quick trip out of town.
WORDS BY STEFFY MCCOURT
Sometimes, the best holiday memories come from getting out of the house with the whole family. Although the cost of traveling during the holiday season can be a bit jarring, a holiday trip is possible without breaking the bank! The following places make great last-minute holiday trips because they are easy to get to by vehicle and deliver on family fun.
There is something for everyone in this adorable town that’s a home to naturalists and artists. Bonus: It feels like the backdrop of a Hallmark movie in December! Hike the winter-friendly trails at Brown County State Park, then head to the park’s nature center to learn about local wildlife. A must-stop for families is Brown County Bikes, because the park is as thrilling as any amusement park from the seat of a sturdy mountain bike. Grab a hot chocolate from Olde Bartley House, then take a stroll through the charming streets of Nashville while peeking into the deckedout shops. Don’t miss a sleigh ride through town (weather permitting) or some DIY ornaments at Our Little World Studio. There are many great places to grab a meal, including Big Woods Pizza, which serves drool-worthy, wood-fired pizzas. It’s the perfect place for a warm, family meal. Stay at the Abe Martin Lodge and Cabins at Brown County State Park, where guests will find rustic charm, plus an on-site water park for all-season splashes.
Every family’s visit to Louisville should definitely include a stop at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. Here, baseball fans can see how bats are made and even take home a mini bat. If you’ve ever played baseball or softball, you will get a kick out of this museum. It is the perfect combination of sport, art, and science! During the holidays, head to Holiday Zip Lines at Louisville Mega Cavern for an underground holiday light and music show unlike any other you’ve ever seen. This rollicking amusement park is underneath the city in a giant limestone cave. Then, bundle up and head to Christmas Tree Lane at Louisville Waterfront Park. Surrounded by evergreens, this glimmering public park is perfect for a holiday stroll along the river. Finish your walk with a stop at Please and Thank You. We dare you to find a better chocolate chip cookie out there! Stay at the Galt House Hotel, which is known for its holiday decor and activities, like breakfast with Santa.
Detroit, aka Motor City, is the birthplace of the automotive industry. A stop at The Henry Ford Museum and Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village is a must. Beyond the car exhibits, there are holiday displays that rival anything found at Disney, from real-life old-timey holiday villages to a festive steam train ride. The museum is right in Dearborn which is famous for its Middle Eastern food. Locals love Sahara where guests rave about the authentic Lebanese dishes and the warmth of the staff. Sports fans should absolutely catch a Detroit Red Wings game. Little Caesars Arena in The District Detroit, a buzzy and always-fun-spot to hang in the city, puts on one heck of a hockey show. Within walking distance is JoJo’s Shake Bar, an entertaining burger and shake shack that kids and adults will love. Stay just outside of Detroit in a completely made-over Catholic seminary at St. John’s Resort This gorgeous resort is a popular wedding destination because of the many beautiful gardens and the grand elegant nature of the resort. Families will love the pool area and on-site restaurants.
Nashville isn’t called Music City for nothing. One step outside on Broadway Street and you can hear the city singing. The cozy twang of the locals will dish hospitality like you’ve never experienced anywhere else. (All with a side of biscuits and a dollop of bourbon flavored honey!) For actual biscuits that will have you after-Thanksgiving-dinner satiated, head to Biscuit Love. The holidays are the perfect time to cheer on the Nashville Predators hockey team at Bridgestone Arena. Make sure to grab one of the colossal yellow cowboy hats! Stay at The Grand Hyatt for amenities like the spa, valet parking, endless coffee and tea, warm chocolate chip cookies, indoor pool, luxurious beds, and perfect bathrooms, along with the ease of being able to walk almost anywhere in downtown Nashville.

urnout is a term that’s typically associated with adults, but kids can experience it, too. According to the website Brain Balance, signs of burnout in kids can include feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and out of control with areas of their life. Kids can also display more irritability and distractibility at home and at school, or they might find it harder to focus to start or finish tasks, which can result in feeling unprepared and falling behind. Stressed-out kids might also focus more on the negatives and worry a lot more than usual.
So how can you help your teen battle burnout? It all starts with self care. Fortunately, there are many practical steps your teenager (and you and your family) can take to fit in little bits of self-care in just five or 10 minutes a day.
• Take five minutes before bed each night to listen to a sleep meditation. Free apps like Calm and Headspace are a great place to start.
• Listen to an interesting podcast.
• Schedule time to read a good book 10 minutes before bed, or make it a goal to read just five pages per night.
• Listen to a favorite song.
WORDS BY LINDSAY CONNER
• Call a friend or family member.
• Practice mindfulness while brushing your teeth.
• Take deep breaths in and out throughout the day.
• Take a walk outside.
• Buy or pick fresh flowers and display them in the house.
• Eat healthy food, or indulge in something special!
• Place positive quotes or affirmations on a Post-It note and place it on the mirror.
• Keep a small journal and write three things you are grateful for each morning or night.
Teens can become overwhelmed when their schedules are overly packed. School, sports, clubs, work, socializing — it all adds up, and there are only so many hours in a day. A helpful tip to keep it all in check is to suggest they make a list of all the things they have to do in the next week or month. Is there anything on the list that they can choose to say “no” to? By learning to say “no” to activities and people that drain you, you create more time for yourself and those you love which is a lot more fulfilling.
Creating a healthy habit can start by doing just one thing just for yourself a week, and then increasing it as you go along.
Parents who struggle with selfcare on a consistent basis may need to try these tactics, too. No one can push through parenting for years at a time without becoming completely burnt out and exhausted, or even resentful and upset, if they do not focus on their own health and self-care. You can best take care of others when you take time to take care of yourself.
For parents of teens, self care can look like reaching out to a support network, especially to people who also have teens. This can be a friend, family member, partner, counselor/therapist, or small group within a church or spiritual community. Many people want to be there for others, to listen and offer a different perspective on life’s experiences.
A roundup of fun and festive things to do around town this season!
WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
The holidays are here, and there are lots of familyfriendly activities to enjoy around Indy. If you're searching for ways to sprinkle some Christmas magic into your month, you’ll find it here! Add these festive ideas to your family's holiday bucket list to fill your holiday season with wonderful memories.
Illuminate the holidays by visiting some of the light displays around town. Through December 31, see over 1 million synchronized lights at Christmas Nights of Lights at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, all from the comfort of your vehicle. Christmas at the Zoo is the place to be after sunset, when the warm glow of twinkling lights fills the night sky and transforms the Zoo into a winter wonderland. Two free options include The Lighted Trail in Greenwood (which starts at Amphitheatre Park) and Magnificent Monon (from Carter Green to Main Street along the Monon Greenway in Carmel), both beautiful outdoor walkways of seasonal lights and decorations.
Santa and his elves have been busy placing mailboxes all over central Indiana. Make the Big Guy’s job easier by writing him a letter and letting him know what you’re wishing for this year! In Indy, you’ll find a Santa mailbox in downtown’s Monument Circle. In Hamilton County, you’ll find them in Fishers City Hall (1 Municipal Drive), Carmel Arts & Design District (110 W. Main St.), Noblesville’s Federal Hill Commons and the
Santa House, located at the corner of Main and Cedar Street in Zionsville. Of course, letters are welcomed all year long at the Claus Museum & Village in Santa Claus, Indiana!
There’s something magical about picking the perfect Christmas tree with your family and cutting it down yourself. Indy has a few U-cut options, all located just a short drive away. On the south side, you’ll find Jay’s Tree Farm in Mooresville; on the west, Evan Whispering Pines in Danville. Up north, visit Dull’s Tree Farm in Thornton; and on the east side, Piney Acres Farm is located in Fortville.
Bundle up and spend some time outdoors doing the ultimate wintertime pastime: ice skating! There are multiple places to strap on your skates, including downtown Indy at Elevance Health Rink at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, The Ice Rink at Holliday Park , and The Ice at Carter Green in Carmel.
Hop aboard the Reindeer Express at the Nickel Plate Express in Noblesville on select dates through December 23. Watch the scenery pass by as you sing carols, enjoy a cookie and cocoa, and meet Santa during a train ride through Hamilton County. See miniature trains chugging through intricate miniature scenes at Jingle Rails at the Eiteljorg Museum, a true Indy tradition through January 20,
trains and brilliant poinsettias
Crossing at Garfield Park through December 29.
Celebrate the magic of the holiday season at an outdoor Christmas market! In the heart of Mass Ave’s Arts District, the Athenaeum Christkindlmarkt is the place to eat, drink and be merry this holiday season, and features traditional festival elements and special German traditions through December 22. In Hamilton County, enjoy a delightful blend of German holiday food, drinks, gifts, decorations, special performances and ice skating in downtown Carmel at the Carmel Christkindlmarkt through December 24.

When you see the nine-foot gnome standing outside the building, you’ll know you're in the right place. Hans (yes, the gnome has a name) is just one of the hundreds of gnomes you’ll find inside Heidelberg Haus, a German cafe and bakery that has been a part of the Lawrence community for more than 55 years. You’ll also find German trinkets, unique gifts, VHS tapes, German magazines, and most importantly for little foodies: German food and baked goods.
Once inside, walk through the maze of gnomes — seriously, there are SO many gnomes here — to the German bakery. The bakery houses a variety of German and European desserts, such as danishes, buttercream tortes, cakes, rolls and kuchen, a German cake-like dessert. They also have a delicious assortment of German cookies, which you can purchase individually or by the half pound.
Sweets are a big draw at Heidelberg Haus. You’ll find lots of treats as you wander the store: Milka and Ritter Sport chocolates, Haribo gummies and many hard-tofind European goodies are around every corner. But for those who love savory bites, Heidelberg Haus also sells German pretzels, loaves of bread, sausages in the refrigerated section, and many other German specialty items. (This is definitely the place to get your tinned herring.) You can also pull up a chair at the restaurant counter and enjoy lunch from their limited menu, which includes German favorites like brats and knockwurst, or the kid-friendly toasted cheese sandwich, which comes with potato chips.

Little ways you can help families survive and thrive.
WORDS BY REBECCA HASTINGS
don’t know how you do it!”
It was a simple statement. There was no ill-will behind it, just an honest thought from one mom to another. Something I’ve thought a thousand times about other parents. But this was directed at a mom gathering her five kids, most with special needs, into the car after a trip to the store. The mom smiled and replied, “You just do.”
Every parent has been there, walked through something challenging, and kept going. It’s what we do as parents. When you have a child with special needs, there’s more.
Sometimes it feels like the challenges never end. And the stakes feel high. A lot of times parents of kids with special needs have to push through really hard things, often alone because people don’t know how to help.
Here are 10 ways you can help support families with special needs.
1. Keep showing up. More than anything, they need people in their life that are not afraid to show up, even when they don’t know what to do. You don’t have to have the answers, you just need to be present.
2. Invite the kids. Kids who have special needs are often left out of fun activities like playdates and birthday parties. Have a quick conversation with the parent or send a text asking what
you can do to help their child enjoy the activity. You can invite the child for a one-on-one playdate instead of a group playtime, welcome the parent to stay and ask if they need any accommodations. Simply ask how you can meet the family where they are and welcome them.
3. Don’t gossip. This should go without saying, but it’s easy to forget. Don’t talk about the family or the child’s needs with other people. If you have a question, simply ask the parent. This is enough of a struggle with the kids they encounter. They don’t need adults making it harder.
4. Get practical. Special needs often require special care and appointments. This can mean multiple doctors, therapists and specialists within one week or even one day. Bring coffee to school drop-off. Offer to babysit their other kids. Leave a meal on their porch or send delivery. It can go
a long way for a tired mama. And don’t forget the paper plates!
5. Ask kindly. Most families are familiar with people wondering about their child with special needs. Instead of steering clear and avoiding the subject, ask thoughtful and kind questions. It is far better than staring. Special needs are nothing to be ashamed of. We can talk about them in ways that we are all comfortable with.
6. Respect privacy. Everyone has a story. It’s natural to be curious about someone’s situation, but it’s important to give people the privacy they deserve. Just because you can see someone’s special need doesn’t mean they want to share every detail about it. Honor what they are comfortable talking about and what they would like to keep private.
7. Invite the parents. We all need friendship and community, both of which can be hard to come by when you are caring for a child with special needs. Invite the parents out to dinner or a barbecue. They might not be able to come as often as they would like (or ever), but being invited reminds them that they are seen and valued. Keep inviting them, reminding them there is no pressure.
8. Accept quiet. If you text or call and you don’t hear back, try not to be offended. Think of how much you are juggling daily and throw a dozen more things in the mix (some of them life and death.) This is what parents with a child with special needs handle regularly. If they don’t get to text or call back, there may be a reason. Don’t write them off. A simple I’m thinking of you to follow up reminds parents you care.
9. Interact with the child. Sometimes people don’t know what to say when they see a child with special needs, so they say nothing. Make the effort to interact with the child. Ask them what their favorite color is or what they want to be when they grow up. Value the child and show the family they matter.
10. Do more than smile. Families with special needs have a lot of people who smile and say a quick hello but never engage. It may feel new and unfamiliar for you, but making the effort to engage in real friendship with families makes a big difference for them and for you. Try it and see!
ccording to the National Diaper Bank Network, nearly half of families in the United States can’t afford diapers for their children. Roughly 46.7% of families are affected by diaper needs, with diaper costs nearing $1,000 per year per child.
Locally in Warren Township, its board of trustees decided to act on the diaper need in the community and create a diaper assistance program. Annika Cox, Warren Township assistance supervisor, brought the idea to the board, and in January 2024, she led the launch of the Bloomin’ Baby Bottom program to Warren Township residents.
“We just saw the need,” Cox says. “We saw a lot of moms who are on maternity leave without pay and they’re having trouble paying basic necessities. And then, of course, they’re going to be struggling to get diapers, as well. Our overall goal is to serve and support the community.”
The diaper assistance program provides diapers to families in need of diapers, free of charge. Each child in the household is eligible for 3 packs of diapers and one pack of wipes every 30 days. Each pack of diapers contains 25 diapers.
WORDS BY SAMANTHA KUPIAINEN
“That could change,” she says. “It’s a fairly new program, so that’s what we’re seeing as working. And then I know, especially if they’re going to daycare and things like that, I know three packs is not much. That’s why we’re saying yes, you can come back every 30 days.”
To be eligible for the program, applicants must provide identification, proof of residency, proof of birth for the child in need of diapers, and proof of income.
“They do have to be a Warren Township resident,” Cox says. “They have to have an address in Warren Township. We partner with Indiana Diaper Bank and we pre-purchase for the year. They have different tiers that they offer and we pick up so many diapers once a month from them.”
Residents interested in partaking in the Bloomin’ Baby Bottoms program can either call the Warren Township Trustee’s Office or simply walk into its office to start the intake process.
“We will just do an intake and gather some information,” Cox says. “We ask for circumstance and proof of residency. Because it’s a Warren Township program, those things are required to determine eligibility.”
Each month, the Bloomin’ Baby Bottoms program gives out about 10 to 20 packs per month. Cox estimates they distribute 1,000 diapers per month.
To utilize the diaper assistance program, Warren Township residents can call the Warren Township Trustee’s Office at 317-327-8947
“Diapers are indeed a necessity for families, and the financial burden they can create is significant,” Cox says. “It brings me great joy to be part of a program that alleviates some of that strain.”
