billing@indyschild.com attended an event recently where I was seated with three other women. All of us were strangers, but it turned out that we all had one thing in common: We were all moms. As we chatted and got to know each other, the conversation veered toward our children. I told everyone I had two sons.

One of the women looked at me directly and said: “You seem like a boy mom.” She was a boy mom herself, and she said it with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. Her words stuck with me, and have made me think. What is a boy mom? My friend Google pointed me to a great essay in The Week by Annabel Monaghan that discusses just these things. In her essay, titled “What It's Like to Be a Mother of Only Boys,” Monaghan writes: “Mothers of boys are strangely laid back about property damage. In fact, property damage is to boy moms what frequent costume changes are to girl moms. A golf club through the drywall, a child through the drywall, and a basketball game ending triumphantly with glass showering down from the ceiling lights. That's just what being a boy mom is.”

It’s true. You should see the hole in the drywall of my youngest son’s room. But property damage is just a small slice of being a boy mom. For me, being a boy mom is a relief. My boys don’t care about the latest fashion trends, at least not now, and so clothes shopping is a breeze. Being a boy mom is also an ego boost. My boys love food, so whatever I make for dinner or dessert is “the best thing you’ve ever made, mom.” Being a boy mom is also a joy. My boys give the best sideways hugs, ever.

Towers of Tomorrow

with LEGO Bricks

Marvel at 20 of the world’s most iconic and astonishing skyscrapers created with architectural detail at Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO® Bricks, the newest temporary exhibit at the Indiana State Museum. This interactive exhibition combines the science of architecture with the creativity of design in a lively, imaginative space. From the towering Burj Khalifa to the majestic Petronas Towers, the exhibition spotlights an array of architectural wonders designed by Australia’s Ryan “The Brickman” McNaught, one of only 21 LEGO Certified Professionals. Visitors young and old can then create their own “towers of tomorrow” from more than 200,000 loose LEGO bricks in hands-on construction areas.

That’s the percentage of American parents who plan to decorate Easter eggs with their children.

Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO Bricks is at the Indiana State Museum through May 12, and is included with admission. For tickets and more information, visit indianamuseum.org.

St. Patrick’s Day Downtown Kick off your St. Patrick's Day weekend with a beloved Indy tradition! Head downtown to the Ohio Street Canal Basin on Thursday, March 14, to witness the Greening of the Canal, a delightful event where the canal in Indy turns a vibrant shade of green. This sets the stage for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Tent Party on Friday, March 15, which includes Irish-themed floats and helium balloons, marching bands, music, Irish dancers, Catholic schools, Irish organizations, local companies and nonprofits with St. Patrick’s Day themes. On Saturday, March 16, get set to run or walk four miles through near Northside neighborhoods during the Shamrock Run and Walk. he donuts at Rebellion Donuts in Noblesville are fun, Instagram-worthy treats that look as good as they taste. It’s hard to choose just one, because they’re all so unique and deliciously decorated.

On any given day, you’ll find flavors like maple bacon, cherry cobbler, orange creamsicle, strawberry jelly-filled, glazed sprinkles and pb&j. Each donut is tasty in its own way, but my family’s favorite was the pb&j donut, which tastes exactly like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, which isn't surprising, considering the name! It tasted exactly like a sandwich that was made out of a donut. Rebellion is owned and operated by two friends, David Pumphrey and John Manley, who wanted to bring their love of coffee and donuts to the Noblesville

community. They work with Indianapolis-based coffee and kombucha distributors to bring local beverages to the shop, too. The shop itself is welcoming — and they have been known to offer events throughout the year, like Coffee with a Cop. The donut menu changes frequently at Rebellion Donuts, which is a good thing because they are always innovating. So you're not guaranteed to find the same flavors that you found the day before, but they do have the standard sprinkle donuts, old fashioneds, glazed donuts and the like every day. alling all Turtles! Leap to the rescue and learn collaboration and problemsolving with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Secrets of the Sewer, a new exhibit at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The heroes in a half shell first hit the scene in 1984 as a self-published comic book. Soon after, the turtle team was turned into a cartoon for television, and then into an action movie, followed by toys and other merch. The things that made the reptilian heroes popular nearly four decades ago continue to stand the test of time: humor, ninja skills and teamwork.

Who doesn’t love a battle between good and evil, especially when the Turtles have such unique skills and personalities? "Kids love to identify with the Turtles as they discover their own strengths and learn about the talents of their friends and family," says Dom Oletti, an exhibit developer for the museum. "In this exhibit, children and families will realize that they can accomplish more as a team than they could by themselves. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will show families that this is a lesson they can carry with them for the rest of their lives."

Families can join the team and train alongside the Turtles and Master Splinter in their underground lair. In the dojo, Splinter and Raphael show visitors the value of hard work, practice and the importance of understanding their enemies in order to defeat them. Grownups can use the skills of each Turtle to teach their little ones that good leaders coordinate others’ skills and strengths to overcome challenges. Families can take a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle personality quiz to discover which Turtle they most relate to. Are they a leader like Leonardo, an inventor like Donatello, rough and tough like Raphael or fun-loving like Michelangelo? Along the way, visitors discover how hard work and discipline can prepare them to meet all kinds of challenges. Explain how self-awareness and focus are important skills. As the kids

explore, teach them how to take in their surroundings and prepare for surprises. Educators believe this kind of fun play can help children process things they might encounter in the real world. pring break seemed to come out of nowhere, didn’t it? One minute it was winter, and the next minute, you’re scrambling to find a last-minute destination to enjoy some time with your family. If you're like us and need some ideas for a family-friendly getaway, you're in luck! Here are four fun destinations, all with something different to offer.

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Mackinac Island, Michigan

This family-friendly city in the Great Smoky Mountains offers a wide range of activities and attractions for all ages. Country Cascades Waterpark Resort is a great place for families to stay, with themed suites and plenty of on-site entertainment options like bowling, rock climbing and gemstone mining. Active kids will love TopJump Trampoline and Extreme Arena for its trampolines and ninja courses, Crave Golf Club for creatively designed mini golf courses, and The Island, which features the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel and carnival-like rides.

Mackinac Island is a great destination to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. When you're ready to venture outside, explore Citygarden, a vibrant sculpture park with plenty of green spaces for picnicking and playing. The Saint Louis Zoo is a must-visit, with over 19,000 animals to marvel at, including penguins, lions and elephants. Make sure to also put the iconic Gateway Arch at the top of your must-visit list! This breathtaking monument is not only a symbol of the city but also offers an incredible experience for families. At the top, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the city and the Mississippi River below.

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin Spring break is a great time to visit the "Waterpark Capital of the World." This southern Wisconsin city offers more than 20 indoor and outdoor waterparks, as well as a variety of other attractions. If you’re visiting in the spring before the temps heat up, you’ll want to opt for indoor water parks. Head to Kalahari Resort Waterpark, one of the largest indoor waterparks in the United States, for exciting water attractions like a wave pool and thrilling water slides. Great Wolf Lodge offers a toddler-friendly indoor waterpark, plus lots of indoor water slides for bigger kids and a lazy river for everyone. t’s that time of year again, when the birds start singing, the chilly Indianapolis winter days give way to milder temperatures, and our homes are in desperate need of sprucing up. Whether it’s your indoor or outdoor space, if the thought of spring cleaning feels daunting, you’re not alone.

Gather What You Need Before You Begin

In a recent OnePoll survey, 68% of people said that cleaning their home each spring is an overwhelming task. So, we asked a local expert to weigh in with their insider tips and tricks on how to tackle that spring cleaning to-do list. Here’s what we found.

It can be helpful to make a list of what you want to accomplish so you can have the satisfaction of checking it off as you go along. Then, before diving into your cleaning spree, gather all your essential supplies. “There’s nothing more frustrating or a killer to your productivity than not having what you need and having to stop in the middle of your work to go buy it,” Lovett says.

Head into your cleaning project with a well-defined strategy. Arm yourself with a trash bag and a donation bag, then dive into your closets and drawers with determination. Like most other tasks in life, our success starts with our mindset. Remember, the goal is to create a more enjoyable and peaceful living space for yourself and your loved ones. It's not a contest, and you don’t have to compare your progress to anyone else's success. Start small and adjust your expectations as needed. ”Focus on progress, not perfection,” says

Focus on One Space at a Time Resist the temptation to tackle your spring cleaning all at once. Instead, concentrate on one room or area at a time. Breaking your project into manageable tasks will keep you from feeling overwhelmed and help you stay committed to your goals.

Stay Organized Year-Round Don't let all your hard work go to waste by saving cleaning duties for the spring. Lovett suggests establishing a quarterly plan for decluttering your home. By staying organized throughout the year, you'll cut down on stress and keep your space looking its best. Here are three simple practices that Lovett says can help you stay clutter-free:

• Put things away immediately after use. • Reset your space at the beginning of each week. • Evaluate your belongings periodically and donate or discard items you no longer need.

Enlist Help When Needed If time constraints or other factors are holding you back, don't hesitate to ask for help. Recruit family members to pitch in or consider hiring a professional cleaning service if it's within your budget.

Practical Outdoor Cleaning Tips Ever since the pandemic, people have spent more time outdoors than ever before. This has translated to using our personal outdoor spaces on a more regular basis. Because of this shift, you may have more outdoor cleaning to do each year. Here are some tasks we suggest you add to your outdoor to-do list.

Clean Outdoor Furniture Begin by removing any debris from your patio furniture. Follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning cushions and other fabric components. Use a gentle mixture of warm water and mild dish soap to wipe down furniture surfaces.

Use a Pressure Washer Rent or buy a pressure washer to clean your home's siding, decks and pavement. This powerful tool will help you remove dirt, mold, and grime that can accumulate over the winter season. Make sure to wear clothing that can get dirty and wet.

Clean Your Gutters Gutters can get filled with leaves and other debris over the winter. Make sure to clean them out to prevent any water damage to your home.

Care for Your Lawn and Garden Mow your lawn, rake up leaves, and aerate your soil to promote healthy grass growth. Trim your trees and shrubs to encourage new growth and maintain a polished appearance.

Clean Your Outdoor Lighting Wipe down your outdoor light fixtures with a damp cloth, clearing away dirt and bugs. Replace any broken or outdated bulbs.

Once you’ve checked off your spring cleaning to-do list, take time to enjoy your space and celebrate the work you’ve done. “Life is way too stressful and complicated,” Lovett says. “It’s not always something we can control, but you can control your home and your space. It’s your place to find rest and solitude.”

oard and Brush is a creative studio that specializes in making DIY wood signs for all of life's occasions. It currently has 235 locations across the country, with four locations locally — Carmel, Noblesville, Greenwood and Brownsburg.

The studio got its start in its founders basement, which catered more so to “Girls Night Out” themes, complete with wine, crafts and camaraderie. Over the years, it’s slowly grown into the nationwide brand that it is today across the country. The main workshop the creative studio hosts is its Pick Your Project Workshop. The Board and Brush team aims to turn its patrons into “DIY Masters” through its classes, educating participants on the raw materials needed to make the wood signs, such as the wood, knots, color variants and even the imperfections. Instructors take the class through the steps needed to distress, sand the grain, and staining needed to make personalized wood signs. With the instructor's assistant, the end product is a personalized wood sign that looks as if it's been with you for years, almost like a vintage heirloom.

The studio offers a variety of classes that cater to a range of ages, including kids, teens and adults. Wood sign making classes are held almost every Friday through Sunday, with the occasional specialty workshop happening during the week. The most common workshop, Pick Your Project Workshop, is $73 and teaches participants how to create their own unique wood sign. The studio provides all the material and instructions to make the sign, and preregistration is required. The creative studio has also hosted a Porch Planter Workshop, Glass Etching and Wood Workshop, and a Doormat Workshop. DREAM Alive Helping urban youth in at-risk communities in grades 7 through 12 to become leaders. W O R D S B Y ALLISON GRABER

“In middle school, I was definitely having a lot of depression and anxiety,” says Salma Montero, a DA graduate. “I didn’t think about my education, my future. I was kind of just lost.” That’s when Montero’s 7th grade English teacher recommended she join DREAM Alive. Montero was partnered with a mentor, and after completing the program, is now studying entrepreneurship at the University of Indianapolis. “I want to own my own company,” she says. This story is not a unique one, with a 100 percent graduation rate for students who have completed DA’s 6-year program. “It’s about reaching those who are usually left out or unaccounted for and inspiring them to have a dream,” says Jodeci Byrd, DA alumnus and DA Young Professionals Board member.

Their underlying purpose is simple: Provide scholars with career-focused handson learning opportunities and character development through mentorship. “We’re offering boots-on-the-ground change in the community,” says Eric Müller, executive director of DREAM Alive. “We want to impact children’s lives and their future family.”

A History of Impact Since 2010, DA has served over 5,300 youth at Arlington, H.L. Harshman, Paramount Englewood, and Urban Act Academy middle schools. Ninetyfive percent of these students are minority in ethnicity and

face achievement and wealth earning barriers. Mentors meet consistently with each student and then follow the scholars to their high school. The hope is that mentorship can help remove obstacles and provide unique opportunities for connection and growth. The DA program allows students to learn through regular meetings, where they participate in community service, mentor outings, and follow a character development curriculum. They also learn about possible career paths through visits to a selection of over 70 community partners.

Looking Ahead to the Future DREAM Alive is growing. The non-profit recently started a lunch mentor program for Arsenal Technical High School students who were previously mentored in middle school.

Volunteers meet one-on-one with students twice a month over their lunch break to coach them about their future. DA is also currently in talks with the Indianapolis Public School (IPS) system about expanding their program to serve students in all area middle schools in the next few years. “Whether it's 50 kids in one school or a couple thousand across the district, it's a dream to be able to share this program with all students in the area,” Müller says. To join in DA’s mission, people can volunteer as a mentor or give regular financial donations. Businesses can also become corporate partners to provide a place for students to visit to learn about career opportunities in different fields. “If I hadn’t been a part of DREAM Alive, I’d probably be like most of the girls in my class … either pregnant or addicted to drugs. These camps are usually located in natural environments, and kids participate in a wide range of activities such as hiking, swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, team sports and more.

What they are: Sports camps usually focus on one sport, like baseball, soccer, tennis or gymnastics. These types of camps are great for kids who have a passion for sports, want to build on their existing skills, or want to explore a new sport in a less competitive setting. Great for kids who… love a particular sport and want to explore it even more. Sports camps are also great for active kids who might want to try out a sport they’ve never experienced, such as lacrosse or rugby.

STEM CAMPS What they are: These educational camps focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). STEM camps provide an immersive and hands-on learning experience, allowing kids to explore and engage with various disciplines in a fun and interactive way.

Great for kids who… are curious, always asking questions and tinkering. Depending on the focus of the camp, kids may have the opportunity to work on robotics, learn about coding and programming, conduct scientific experiments, and engage in engineering challenges.

ART CAMPS What they are: These types of camps can include performance art (theater), music, drawing and painting, photography or any other type of subject that gets a kid’s creativity flowing. Great for kids who… prefer to be indoors and immerse themselves in their creativity. Art camps are designed to inspire and nurture the artistic talents of kids, and they are a great opportunity for young artists to explore different art forms, learn new techniques, and gain hands-on experience over the summer. Visit Your Local Library Libraries are meant to be quiet places, which means a trip to the local library can be a great way to spend the day, especially for a child who gets easily overstimulated and doesn’t like a lot of noise or commotion. If your child loves to read, or be read to, you can find some special books and select a cozy spot to settle in for some reading. Many libraries also offer

Say Hello to Farm Animals Enjoy some fresh air and family fun at Tyner Pond Farm, located at 7408 East 200 South in Greenfield. Another awesome farm to check out is Traders Point Creamery, located at 9101 Moore Road in Zionsville. FIND THE PERFECT FIT Create a schedule that keeps your child engaged and your family connected.

reschool open houses are in full swing, so the time to start looking for a school for your little one is now. Indianapolis has a wide range of quality preschool options — so many, that it can be a little difficult to know where to start! Here are some important things to consider as you research schools and make the rounds visiting the classrooms.

What to Look for in a Preschool When it comes to finding a quality preschool, there are a few key things you'll want to keep in mind.

Qualified and Caring Teachers: Look for teachers who are trained in early childhood education, and who genuinely care about the well-being and development of your child. Ask the teachers about their qualifications and experience, and observe how they interact with the children to get a sense of their teaching style.

Look for Red Flags As you tour the classroom, if you notice that the students are not engaged, the learning space is cluttered or sterile, or there is a high turn-over rate with staff, that should set off some warning bells. Ideally, you want to see uncluttered walls, organized materials, and a calm, quiet setting that allows children to focus and be engaged. Also look out for a dirty facility, teachers on devices, teachers not interacting with the children or children left unattended. On the flip side, if a school has teachers who have been there for years, that is a great sign. Other signs of a good preschool include a classroom space where children have access to a variety of activities for different learning styles, such as building blocks, an art center, dramatic play, fine-motor activities, interactive games and a library. Ideally, you want to see a space where children have the opportunity to work independently, in small groups and large groups, as well as one-on-one time with the teacher.

Age-appropriate Curriculum: A quality preschool should have a curriculum that is tailored to meet the developmental needs of young children. Look for a blend of structured activities, playbased learning, and lots of opportunities for social interaction. A well-rounded curriculum will include activities that help grow a child’s cognitive, physical and social-emotional development.

Safe and Stimulating Environment: Pay attention to the physical environment of the preschool. Bright, clean, welcoming and child-proofed facilities are what you’re looking for, equipped with child-sized furniture and developmentally appropriate materials. Outdoor play spaces should be secure and offer opportunities for exploration and gross motor skill development.

Good Communication: Look for open lines of communication, regular updates on your child's progress, and opportunities for parent-teacher conferences. A school that values your input and actively involves parents in their child's learning journey creates a sense of community and support.

Why Touring is Important Although doing online research and getting word-of-mouth referrals are great ways to learn about a preschool, nothing compares to taking the time to tour a preschool. Touring a preschool during the school day gives you a glimpse into the life of the school and the students. You can actually see students interacting with their teachers, see the learning environment being used, and learn about the daily routines of the students. It is also a perfect time to ask questions specific to the needs of your family. Finding the right preschool for your child is a personal decision. Take the time to visit multiple preschools, talk to other parents, and trust your instincts. t is no secret that adolescents have a lot on their plates. They are dealing with things that previous generations have not, like navigating social media, feeling like they can’t shut down or turn off, and information overload at their fingertips each and every day. In addition to the advancements in technology that affect tweens and teens, they also are being pushed to get good grades, excel in athletics, participate in extracurriculars, maintain friendships, prepare for college and possibly even hold a job on top of it all.

Regardless of personality types, there are plenty of studies that show the value of exercise, good nutrition and being sure you get the recommended hours of shut-eye each night (which can feel next to impossible in the tween and teen years.)

Just typing all that has made me want to lie down for an afternoon snooze.

Stress and Anxiety is on the Rise for Teens According to a 2021 article from the American Academy of of Child & Adolescent Psychology, suicide is the second leading cause of death for children, adolescents and young adults age 15-to-24-year-olds. And according to the John Hopkins medical website, “Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorder in the United States, and anywhere from 1 in 10 to 1 in 13 people suffer from anxiety, with about 8% of children and teenagers experiencing an anxiety disorder. This has worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are living in more times of stress and anxiety than ever before. The

If you look at the schedule and see a stressful time is on the horizon, try to help your teen eat healthier snacks and meals, get outside and move their body, and get to bed at a reasonable hour. They may push back, but remind them it is for their benefit. teenage years generally have significant stress and this has worsened during the pandemic.” With these statistics in mind, it’s important for teens, tweens and their parents to learn stress management strategies to help curb the feelings of anxiety and overwhelm when they threaten to take over. It’s important for them to have tools in their toolbox to de-escalate stressful situations, and to learn that this too shall pass.

Tailor Your Strategies to the Child I have four children ranging in age from 18 to 11. We are in the thick of raising tweens and teens. What I have learned over the years is that what works for one, may not necessarily work for the other. Each child is their own unique person with their own skill set, personality and needs.

For example, some of my children are more introverted. For them, stress management may be a time-out from whatever it is they are doing. It may be a scheduled break, going on a walk, watching a show, or reading a book. For my children who are more extroverted, stress management may look like going out for a frappuccino or a special treat, having a friend over or taking a break to FaceTime someone they love. I have learned over the years that I need to pay attention to what makes them tick and what helps them when the walls are threatening to close in. I am more introverted by nature, so for me, a quiet break goes a long way. But just because that is what I long for in times of stress, that doesn’t mean that is what my children long for, too. To learn more about what helps your child in times of stress, have conversations with them when they are not in the midst of a stressful situation. Find out what you can do to help them and build those things into their schedule.

Also, try to help your teen understand how to maintain their schedule. If they have an ACT test coming up, it’s probably not best to schedule a late work shift or a sleepover the night before. If it’s the week of finals, that’s probably not the best time to plan a birthday party. And if they have a big game coming up, that’s probably not the best time to stay up all night making TikTok videos. Stress management is a lifelong skill we need through all stages and ages of life. The sooner we start to incorporate them into our lives, the better. You may receive some pushback from your teen as you start to incorporate healthy boundaries, schedules, and of course, managing the use of technology, like putting the phone away at bedtime and setting screen time limits. But hopefully, your child will see the benefit outweighs those things they feel they are missing out on. And as their stress begins to decrease, their mental and physical health will be all the better for it.
