Good Vibes When it comes to inclusivity, there is a definite vibe shift going on. It seems like everywhere I go, I’m noticing more restaurants, museums and places of business that are making a real effort to make sure that everyone feels welcome. I’ll give you just one example. My family and I visited a local museum recently, and as my children played and moved around the exhibits, I noticed sensory-friendly resources placed strategically around for visitors who might need them. There were noise-canceling headphones for those who needed less sound distraction. There were fidgets and tactile objects available for kids who needed something to hold in their hand. There were signs pointing out designated quiet areas for those who needed a break from the crowds. It made my heart happy to know that the museum was looking out for all of their visitors — even the ones who might experience the world differently than others.

Inclusivity is important, and in this month’s magazine, you’ll notice a new section called Inclusive Indy. One of the articles in the section that I’m most excited about is our “Sensory-friendly and Inclusive Experience” article on page 34. In it, you’ll find a range of local places that are leading the charge for change, and offering adapted experiences for people with autism and other special needs. Let it be one resource for finding places to visit this spring that everyone will enjoy. Wishing you positive vibes this April!

HIDDEN GEMS
WORDS BY STEFFY MCCOURT
PetPeople For Christmas this past year, our boys received the ultimate gift: a puppy. This adorable little guy, a Corgi named Rudolph, has added so much to our home. He has added so much fun. So much laughter. So much happiness. So much love. And, of course, as all puppies do, so so so much mess.
towels, a powerful dryer and both adult and child-sized aprons.
This month’s Hidden Gem is going to the dogs. Our favorite place to take Rudolph, besides the free dog park at Clay Terrace in Carmel, is a little pet shop called PetPeople, that is tucked in a shopping center at Cool Creek Commons on 146th Street. PetPeople is a chain that doesn’t feel like a chain. There are locations all around Indy, including Nora, Fishers and Greenwood.
Various locations around Indy petpeople.com
A well-spent Saturday to my boys includes a muddy romp at the dog park followed by a PetPeople doggy bath. Each boy takes a turn as a shampooer, rinser and dryer. It’s a real-life operation. They run the show with just a little bit of guidance. It costs a lot less than a professional groomer, and it is way more fun!
Our favorite part of this store, and what makes it a hidden gem to us, is actually the Do-It-Yourself Doggy Bath within the store. For only $12, you are able to get your very own doggy bath station, which includes a luxurious selection of shampoos, freshly washed

LITTLE FOODIES

Red Line Frozen Treats Red Line Frozen Treats seems like it was made especially with kids in mind. This southside Indy frozen yogurt shop not only has more than a dozen different flavors of self-serve frozen yogurt, but it also has the coolest decor: there’s a subway car inside the dining room!
The Red Line Subway Train Car Located in Greenwood, Red Line gets its name from the Chicago Transit Authority’s busiest rail line in Chicago: the Red Line, which is part of the Chicago “L” system. From the minute you walk into this frozen yogurt shop, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into one of the rail cars along the Red Line. You’ll see a subway train car that lines one whole wall, complete with lights, signs and simulated windows and doors. Photos of the Chicago skyline decorate the walls. A miniature subway train chugs along on a train track that winds its way above your head. All of this combines to transport you to a subway station in the Windy City.
The Frozen Yogurt With 20 rotating, self-serve frozen yogurt flavors a day, you might have a hard time deciding on exactly what you want. But Red Line offers samples for you to taste to help you make up your mind. Then choose from 50-plus different toppings, including cereals, candy, fruit, syrups and more. From freshcut fruit to your favorite candy to classic sauces that add the perfect finishing touch, you can handcraft a frozen dessert that is distinctively your own. And if you’re in the mood for something savory, Chicago’s Pizza, Red Line Frozen Treats’ sister restaurant, is located right next door. Just step through the subway-station hallway that connects the two, and you’re right there. 5920 E. Stop 11 Rd., Indianapolis facebook.com/ RedLineFrozenTreatsIndy

WORDS BY KIMBERLY HARMS, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS
Accessibility and Fun for All at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis One of the most important things visitors to any museum or attraction can do is to prepare for a visit ahead of time by looking at the website to discover what resources the museum offers to assist in planning. “Things are always changing at The Children’s Museum, thanks in part to what we learn from our visitors,” says Betsy Lynn, accessibility coordinator at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “We appreciate feedback on what we can do to make the museum even more accessible and inclusive, and how we can help visitors prepare for what they will experience.”
The Concierge Desk on Level 1 of the museum is a great first stop. There, visitors can find sensory maps, fidget items and noisereducing headphones. The Concierge can also provide information about museum programs and events that may be well-suited for visitors.
The Children’s Museum offers sensory maps with symbols to help guide families through a visit. The symbols designate things such as bright areas like Beyond Spaceship Earth, which is a visually busy space.
area, including sport wheelchairs with seat belts to lock the rider in place that also feature wheels that are slightly angled at the base to provide more stability. There are also balls with bells inside for those with low vision and paddles on a frame that visitors using wheelchairs can manipulate to simulate kicking a soccer ball.
It features several bright colors and the pattern on the f loor is made to simulate a wall of the space station.
The sensory map also prepares families for low-lit areas, such as Dinosphere, and f lashing lights, such as in National Geographic Treasures of the Earth tomb area during the sound and light show.
There are quiet areas (infoZone library) and loud spaces (All Aboard with a loud bell on the train and strobe light during the show).

Tactile opportunities can be enjoyed with plastic replicas of the Chihuly glass pieces to create a tower in Fireworks of Glass or wooden blocks in Playscape.
Strong smell areas include the Food Court and some performances in Lilly Theater, which include a fog machine where fog may drift into the first few rows of the audience.
The museum continually tests different practices and devices to determine what families might find useful. “We want to know if there are parts of an experience that are going to be difficult for people with low vision, language barriers, different physical abilities or sensory needs,” says Jason Greene, manager of Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience. “If someone has challenges with loud noises, lights, f lashing — anything that’s overwhelming, we want to know. We’re always looking for ways that we can adjust things to help visitors feel more comfortable.”
For children who enjoy movement and are kinesthetic learners, Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience is a great place to move body parts in different ways. There is an increasing amount of adaptive equipment outdoors in the sports

WORDS BY INDY PARKS STAFF
Summer Jobs at Indy Parks All of us at Indy Parks are preparing now to make this summer the best one yet. With weeks of swimming, day camps, free concerts and movies, and countless programs on the calendar, we are looking now for people to fill hundreds of summer positions inside our family centers and aquatics facilities.
Camp Counselors ($12/hr)
Lifeguards ($13/hr), Pool Managers ($14.50/hr), and Cashiers ($11/hr)
Indy Parks served more than 300,000 free meals across Indianapolis last year. Most in the summer months, when schools were out for the summer. This wouldn’t be possible without our food program staff. These people help count meals, track deliveries to our food program sites, and ensure our free meal programs continue without a hitch.
Splashing around in the pool is a favorite summer memory, and lifeguards keep people safe at the pool by being an extra set of eyes on everyone in the water. We train them and help them get certified in First Aid, CPR, and Basic Life Support. They need to be strong swimmers, and potential applicants can practice their skills for free during open swim hours at Thatcher Park and Indy Island. We also rely on our pool managers to keep pools safe and clean for everyone who stops by to swim this summer. That includes supervising lifeguards and making sure all health and safety rules are followed across the facility. Cashiers are a big part of our aquatics staff, helping to collect fees and track admission into pools and register people for aquatic programs.
This summer, we are putting on camps at 13 parks across Indianapolis, focusing on arts, swimming, nature, sports, and more. Our camp counselors help facilitate fun memories for kids of all ages, coordinating days of activities while making sure campers stay safe and healthy. The ideal camp counselor is a great communicator who has a passion for working with children.
Food Program Coordinators ($12/hr)
We have several more seasonal positions available, including facility attendants and stage technicians. You can apply for summer openings and year-round positions at parks.indy. gov. We’ll see you at the parks this summer!

Experience Kids 360° Early Learning Academy
Play and movement are the cornerstones for learning at this new preschool in Westfield. Play is one of the main ways in which children learn and develop, especially during the early-childhood years. Kids 360° Early Learning Academy, a new preschool opening in fall 2022 in Westfield, recognizes the importance of play and movement, and has created a movement-based, academic preschool with a curriculum that develops healthy bodies and brains. “There was a need for a different kind of preschool that meets the foundational needs for a child to learn,” says Matt Martin, director of Kids 360° Early Learning Academy. “Movement and learning through play are foundational. Our curriculum is play-based with differentiated small-group instruction time for each student that incorporates sensory motor integration.” Kids 360° Early Learning Academy will be housed inside a 35,000 square-foot facility at Grand Park in Westfield. Students will have access to gymnastics equipment, a designated ninja course and much more.

f lipping, tumbling, tossing and catching bean bags, and so much more,” Martin says. Martin emphasizes that physical development and academic development go hand in hand. “Your vestibular system — tiny muscles in the middle ear — are so important for visual and auditory processing, motor control, emotional regulation and so much more,” he says. “Our intentional movement will target those muscles so our kids can unlock and reach their full potential.” Play is the cornerstone for learning, and Kids 360° Early Learning Academy takes that idea seriously. “For children, play is their work,” says Angie Berezny, lead teacher and program coordinator for Kids 360° Early Learning Academy.
“Our kids will be jumping on trampolines, balancing on balance beams and wobble boards, hanging and swinging from bars, rolling,

“When children are interested in a topic or subject and given the tools and materials they need to explore, they are more likely to develop skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, fine and gross motor skills, and the ability to build confidence in themselves.” Berezny says that over the years, some preschools have shifted their focus to academics. “Research shows us that this approach is actually hurting our children’s literacy development in the long run, rather than being beneficial,” he says. “We want to get back to the basics, so to speak, and offer children the environment and opportunities they need and deserve at this age to thrive as a whole.” Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget has been quoted as saying, “When you teach a child something, you take away forever their chance of

room. Keep in mind that there are other costs associated with an RV rental, including gas, campground fees, food and more.
Go Glamping Out in Nature
Mosey Over to a Dude Ranch Dreaming of life on the ranch, even if only for a short while? Then your family might enjoy a dude ranch vacation. There are more than 100 dude ranches around the country that you can visit, from Arkansas to California and Montana to Arizona, where you can learn about the western cowboy lifestyle and enjoy wide-open spaces. A dude ranch vacation will have your family riding the trails, working cattle, fly fishing in pristine rivers, and dressing the part. Spend time riding, eating and enjoying the ranch with your wranglers and truly learn what it means to be a cowboy. Dude ranches can be the ultimate family vacation for all ages, because in most cases, they are all-inclusive vacations. Activities, accommodations, meals and more are offered all in one fun package, taking a lot of the

guesswork out of planning a vacation. Some ranches do have “a la carte” options that you can add on to your vacation, such as guided fishing, spa services or river rafting, depending on the location you choose.
Hit the Road in a Rental RV Road trips are back and bigger than ever this year. After two years of postponing family vacations, many people are opting to hit the road and explore the country from behind the wheel. Because of this, renting a recreational vehicle (or RV) for vacation has become a very popular way to travel. For families looking to social distance, an RV is a great option for traveling. They allow families to enjoy most of the comforts of home — including a private bathroom, a place to sleep, and a place to hang
out — all without leaving the safety and security of your vehicle. So, what are the best options for renting an RV for a family trip? Cruise America (cruiseamerica. com), Outdoorsy (outdoorsy. com) and RVShare (rvshare.com) are three popular websites that will allow you to easily book an RV motor home, camper or pull-trailer for a family trip. Depending on the type of vehicle you rent, how long you plan to rent the RV, and where you’re going, renting an RV can be comparable in price to a hotel
There is camping, and then there is glamping. If your family likes the idea of being surrounded by nature but also likes the luxurious things in life, then a glamping vacation (glamor + camping) is made for you. From fully furnished yurts and decked-out teepees to covered wagons and retro Airstreams, there are many unusual places for to rest, relax and enjoy the outdoors in style around the Midwest and the country at large. You can find locations to get your glamp on at GlampingHub (glampinghub.com), or just by doing a web search with the word “glamping” and your preferred destination. You’re sure to find a cool glamping location that will allow you to escape in style.

Local Spotlight: Purdue Polytechnic High School’s Dream Big Academy
This free program allows students to explore their interests with support from local mentors. University. “Dream Big is our way of taking the project-based, authentic learning approach we know our students love and offer it to students outside PPHS,” Renckly-DeWhitt says.
Imagine turning education from a tedious experience to an immersive passiondriven experience for your teen? Flip the switch from telling them what they should be learning to allowing them to identify their interests and engaging them in real-world experiences to further develop their knowledge and skills.
Purdue Polytechnic High School (PPHS) is doing just that with their new Dream Big Academy, a summer intensive program for incoming 8th grade students. Dream Big aims to help students explore their passions with support of a local mentor, allowing them hands-on experience and a chance to develop professional connections. PPHS knows having supportive adults in their corner increases the likelihood students will ultimately succeed in school and graduate.
If a participant is interested in photography, PPHS will match them with a local photographer to mentor and guide them in running their own studio. Or if the child is interested in technology and gaming, they might be paired with
18
PPHS hopes to eventually expand Dream Big to all three of their campuses (Englewood, North Indianapolis and South Bend) at a larger scale. “We know that giving students the opportunity to experience working with an industry expert can really impact their future in a positive and exciting way,” Renckly-DeWhitt says. “We’d love to be able to reach more students and empower them to follow their passions and see themselves as what they are: the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers and change-makers.”
a local expert to create their own app. The possibilities are only limited by the students’ imagination.
Dream Big was the brainchild of Ronni Moore, principal of PPHS North. “She noticed how engaged and excited students were when they had voice and choice in their own projects and experiences,” says Charli Renckly-DeWhitt, director of communications, marketing & recruitment. “Ronni and her team at PPHS North have been really dedicated to procuring resources and partnerships to make [Dream Big] happen!”
The Dream Big Academy isn’t a completely new idea for PPHS — they have been placing an emphasis on immersive projectbased learning since their founding. As a public charter school, PPHS is focused on increasing the number of students from underrepresented backgrounds who will pursue STEM degrees from Purdue
Applicants to Dream Big Academy are accepted on a first-come first serve basis, so interested families are encouraged to apply right away; applications close in early May. Participation is free of charge. For Academy updates, visit pphs.purdue.edu or follow the PPHS Facebook page at facebook.com/PurduePolyHS.

TEENS & TWEENS
WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON
Teenage Burnout
Here are some ways to identify and combat exhaustion in our kids. We’ve all heard about “burnout,” but have you thought about this term in relation to our tweens and teens? Although we might think that our children are too young to experience true burnout, you might be surprised to know that it seems to be prevalent in teens now more than ever.
Dr. Rebecca Jackson, a board certified cognitive specialist for Brain Balance, has a wealth of knowledge to share with parents about burnout in relation to tweens and teens.
Have you noticed an increase in burnout in tweens and teens? Yes, I am definitely noticing increased rates of burnout — in all ages. Middle school and high school students face social, school and family pressures, in addition to often juggling schedules that are non-stop. Knowing what to watch for, and strategies to impact burnout, can help.
child select which items they want to do — otherwise, it can become one more thing for them to have to do.
Items to consider on the strategy list: Are they getting enough sleep? A tired brain has a harder time focusing and staying positive. Are they consuming consistent protein and healthy fats to help their energy and focus? Are they carving out time for exercise, fun and relaxation? These strategies can help engage positive emotions and can help energize the brain.
What are some signs of burnout? Signs of burnout include feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and out of control with areas of life. You can also experience an increase in irritability, distractibility, and negative emotions. Feeling burned out can make it harder to start and finish tasks, which can result in feeling unprepared and falling behind. A stressed brain will have a greater tendency to focus on the negatives and worry, which will amplify the bad feelings.
How do parents address burnout with their kids? Acknowledge how your child may be feeling, and let them know you are there to help. Share about a time when you were feeling the same way.

Work together to create two lists: a to-do list, and a list of helpful tips and techniques to keep the brain and body feeling good and focused.
With the to-do list, write everything down that needs to be accomplished. Go back and code that list by priority. What needs to be done now, and what can wait? Assign due dates and an order to tackle the list. Sometimes, the simple act of writing everything down can start to provide a better sense of control.
Brainstorm a strategy list that includes everything you think of that can impact mood, focus and energy in a positive way. Let your child select tems they think would help. It's important to let your
The next two strategies involve setting aside the work. Taking a quick break mid-task, and time to relax daily, can also inf luence mood and energy. Stepping away from work and returning when you are more fresh can be more productive than toiling away for hours. Set a timer hourly to get up and move! A few minutes to hydrate, eat and fire up your muscles can help prep your brain for more productivity.
Finally, find time for fun. Teenagers are social beings. Create opportunities for a change of scenery. Adding a friend can help elevate mood, as well. Going for a hike, checking out the local roller rink, trampoline park, or skate park are all ways to experience both entertainment and exercise.

4 BIG BENEFITS OF SUMMER CAMP FOR KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

SENSORY-FRIENDLY AND INCLUSIVE EXPERIENCES
SPECIAL NEEDS
WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
4 Big Benefits of Summer Camp for Kids with Special Needs Going to summer camp — whether to a day camp or an overnight camp — can be an enriching and positive experience. Camp is where kids learn many life skills that they will take into adulthood, including learning how to do things on their own, learning how to make friends and get along with others, and learning how to embrace new experiences. Here are just some of the ways that summer camp can be a big benefit for kids with special needs… for both the child and the parent.
and abilities benefit from screen-free time, and camp provides a great outlet (and excuse!) for leaving the screens behind, even if it’s only for a few hours.
Get a Break
Many camps for kids with special needs have specially trained staff to help kids get out of their comfort zones and try new activities. This opens kids up not just to new experiences, but experiencing new people, too.
Grow Friendships Summer camp for kids with special needs provides a safe environment for friendships to blossom, and it allows kids to work on their social skills with other kids who might understand their challenges. Although camp can oftentimes provide a structure similar to a school setting, camp is typically more low-key and engaging, with an emphasis on fun, so there are more opportunities for kids to let down their guard and find new buddies. Kids who have a difficult time making friends during the school year might find themselves making friends easily at camp.

Gain New Skills No matter what kind of camp your child attends, chances are, they will be learning something new. Whether it’s a complex skill like building a fire or rowing a boat, or something more everyday like finally learning how to tie their shoes, camp is an opportunity for a child to step outside of their comfort zone and grow.
In some cases, you can find camps that will teach kids specific skills, like how to swim or how to ride a bike without training wheels. There are also camps for kids with disabilities that teach kids how to play team sports, like soccer or baseball, and provide wheelchair accessibility and helpers. These kinds of camp experiences help to ensure that kids have a positive experience learning a new skill.
Unplug from Technology Technology has increasingly made its way into our everyday lives, including the lives of our children. But camp is one of the few places where kids can fully unplug from their phones, tablets, video games and TVs, and just experience summer the oldfashioned way. Kids of all ages
Parenting is tough. Parenting a child with special needs can sometimes be even more tough. Children are perceptive and can sense when their parents are burned out and need a break. And guess what? Most of the time, the child needs a break just as much as the parent does! Camp provides this break, for both the parent and child. At camp, kids can make new friends, engage with adults who are not their parents, and get a little change of pace. Parents can take a breather and reset for when their child comes back home. It’s a win-win for all involved.
SPECIAL NEEDS
WORDS BY RACHAEL DUPREE
Talking to Kids About Disabilities How to talk to typically developing kids about kids with special needs. Talk Directly Use clear, matter-of-fact language to talk about disabilities, Crawford says. This is not only respectful to the disabled community, it simply makes more sense to children. Practice direct conversation by:
Avoiding Euphemisms Use the word disability instead of words like “handi-capable” or “special needs.” Euphemisms further stigma about disability and are not preferred by many in the disabled community.
Speaking in a Neutral Tone
As parents, we have the opportunity to engage our children in their many curiosities. While there’s no doubt some of our kids’ questions will surprise us, others we can be prepared for. We can expect that, at some point, our children will notice people with disabilities and, naturally, have questions. Here are some tips for getting ahead of the conversation and having meaningful discussion about disabilities. Accept Your Discomfort If you’ve felt that tingle of discomfort when your child has had a question about a person who is different from them, you’re not alone. Oftentimes, this anxiety can be rooted in not wanting to make others feel badly, but by censoring yourself or shaming your child for asking a question, you can inadvertently send the message that talking about disabilities is taboo, or even worse, that disabilities are bad. The important thing to remember is that questions about disabilities are normal because young children are naturally curious, says Sally Reed Crawford, M.A., research associate with the Early Childhood Center at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, who has worked in the disability field for 40 years. By accepting your discomfort and proceeding with a direct and respectful conversation, you can help normalize disabilities, promote an inclusive mindset, and set a tone of empathy and respect.

INDYSCHILD.COM I April 2022
Answer your child’s questions with neutral, fact-based responses, taking care not to invoke a sense of pity or sadness. For example, you could say, “Yes, that woman is walking with a guide dog. Guide dogs are trained to help people move around if they cannot see.”
Using Positive Language Avoid language that implies that something is wrong with a disabled person. For example, instead of saying, “She uses a wheelchair because she can’t walk,” Crawford recommends saying, “Some people’s muscles work differently and a wheelchair helps them be able to move.”
Admitting What You Don’t Know If you don’t have an immediate answer to your child’s question, responding with “I don’t know, but it’s something we can learn more about” is completely valid — just make sure to follow up.
Emphasize Similarities Emphasizing similarities between people with and without disabilities helps develop empathy in your child. Make this personal by pointing out similarities your child has with a disabled person they know, such as they both like to draw or both like pizza. “Expand by asking [your] child what they are good at and what they need help doing, emphasizing we all have things we can do and we all need help in other ways,” Crawford suggests.
Discuss Unseen Disabilities
Use Teaching Tools
“It is important to bring up how disabilities are sometimes visible — we can see them — and that sometimes disabilities are not able to be seen — invisible,” Crawford says. You may first discuss visible differences, like walkers, canes and hearing aids, and then move into explaining that people with unseen disabilities, like hearing impairment, autism or dyslexia, may need special equipment and education services, too. You may even point out that they may have behaviors that are surprising or even scary, and that everyone is usually safe. Emphasize that these differences don’t define the whole of who they are and that they’re people who want to play, learn and be accepted just like your child.
Seek out resources to help steer your family’s conversation about disabilities. Picture books are a go-to for young children, and you can find many great book lists that embrace disabilities, including Think Inclusive’s “Representation Matters: 10 Children’s Books With Disabled Characters.” Watching Sesame Street with your child and discussing the characters with disabilities can also be a good conversation starter, Crawford says. Finally, turn to the disabled community for education, seeking out social media accounts where adults with disabilities share their expertise on these topics.
Prioritize Inclusivity It can be tempting to tell your kids to be “extra nice” to a child they know who has a disability, but these acts of charity actually make it difficult for kids with and without disabilities to get to know one another. Instead, to talk with your kids about how they can include and befriend kids with disabilities. “Friendships teach us acceptance of each person’s uniqueness and that we also have shared likes and dislikes and that we are more similar than different,” Crawford says.
Conversations with your children about disabilities will be ongoing. The more they learn, the more nuanced your conversations may become. By educating yourself and approaching these talks with a mindset of inclusion and respect, you’ll be able to help your child better understand disabilities and show empathy toward those they meet.
