Totality Awesome April

t’s here! April is finally here. I don’t know what it is about this month, but it is always a highly anticipated month for me. Maybe because April signals spring, new growth and warmer weather. I really like warmer weather.

This year, April also means an amazing event: the total solar eclipse, which takes place on April 8, 2024. Much of North America will experience the eclipse in varying degrees, but the area where I live happens to be directly in the path of totality. According to the NASA website, this means we might be able to experience some very cool and unusual things, like:

• a 360 degree sunset

• bright stars or planets in the darkened sky

• cooler air temperature

• an eerie silence, as many of the birds and animals will go silent

Whoa! I’m most excited to experience the total eclipse with my children, and see their reaction to the world around them change, even if just for seven minutes or so. Crossing fingers for clear skies that day!

Right now, I still haven’t figured out where my family will experience the eclipse. There are so many events happening to celebrate this monumental day. Of course, you could just step outside and see the eclipse in your own backyard — while wearing proper solar eclipse viewing glasses, of course. Or you can party with others at one of the eclipse events we listed in “Celebrate the Total Solar Eclipse in Southwest Ohio” on page 27. Either way, this solar eclipse will be an event to remember!

Have a totality great month!

Gem City Catfé

v ats and coffee are a perfect combination at Gem City Catfé in Dayton. The coffee’s by Boston Stoker with options from espresso to latte. Teas and bottled drinks, along with food like bagels and danish, are also available. Upstairs, there’s an art gallery full of local art and extra space to lounge.

The Cats

The stars of the show here are the cats — up to 18 of them, to be precise. They are located in the cat lounge, separate from the Catfé, in case you’re allergic or just don’t want to mingle coffee and cat hair. But you can watch them play through the glass while you sip and dine.

Want to meet the cats? Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are best. There’s a fee of $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers (membership is $25/ year per household) to visit the cats and enjoy coffee while doing so. Why the fee? A cat’s got to eat, too! (Kids need to be age five or older and teens must have adult supervision.)

Merch at the Catfé says “Save More Cats” and that’s the “why” for this locale. These cats are all from Gem City Kitties, a nonprofit helping to find homes for cats in need. So, consider a furever friend if you make a feline connection at the Café.

ADVOCATING FOR YOUR AUTIStic Child

How to ensure your child receives the care and resources they deserve.

We are our children’s biggest cheerleaders. We root for them. We protect them. We teach them. And we advocate for them. All children need people who have their back when it comes to school and life in general, but this can be doubly important for kids with autism.

If your child has autism, you might sometimes feel overwhelmed trying to gain access to the best care and resources possible. The good news is that people want to help your child succeed. And good news: Those resources do exist — it’s just a matter of getting plugged in.

Arm Yourself with Knowledge

“One of the best ways a parent can effectively advocate for their child’s needs is to understand what resources are available and how they can be effectively used,” says LaShell Dauterman, Ed.D, a board member with the Dayton Autism Society. “You need to be reasonable with your request and ensure you are able to commit to being a partner to the provider of services.”

Dauterman also suggests doing the following:

• Know the strengths and weaknesses of your child. Be willing to share those with the schools, providers and anyone else who is working with your child.

• Be honest about the ways in which your child can work. Trust those who are working with them. In other words, be a team player by supporting their efforts to build the skills your child will need to be functional in life.

• Communicate clearly what you expect, and be calm and direct.

• Be an active listener. Restate information for clarity, and put things in writing.

• Focusing on solutions. Remaining positive will lead to better outcomes and higher success for both you and your child.

• Seek out a parent mentor or advocate to sit in meetings with you. As a parent, it is only human for you to become emotional when decisions are being made about your child and their educational future. Having someone who can be there as your support allows for a neutral set of eyes and ears to ensure that what is discussed is understandable and meets the needs of your child. This is especially important to families where English is not their first language.

• If your child is able, allow them to provide their thoughts and ideas. Giving them a voice builds their confidence and their willingness to also participate.

16 OH PARENT .COM / APRIL 2024
APRIL 2024 / OH PARENT .COM 17

In addition to advocating for your child’s health, you’ll also want to learn how to gain access to vital resources within the local community.

“One of the best ways to access resources is to use the various social media platforms to connect with organizations around your area,” Dauterman says. “Attend events geared toward your area of need so that you can network and learn about what is available. Talk with other parents at school, church, work and other areas where you may congregate.”

Advocate for Education

Dauterman says that the best way to ensure inclusive education is to know and understand the IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) process of your school district, and what supports are available to help your child learn and grow.

“Take the time to read the IEP, ask questions, visit the classroom, and build a relationship with your school so that you all work as a team,” Dauterman says. “Be realistic with your goals for your child, and speak up if you disagree or are unsure of something. Don’t sit in silence and feel defeated by the process. Bring ideas to the table if you know it will benefit your child.”

Know You’re Not Alone

It is important for families of children with autism to know that they are not alone.

“In the midst of everything, it is easy to feel isolated and as if your voice is not being heard, but know that there are others out there ready to be your cheerleader and guide,” Dauterman says. “Reach out to your local Autism Society and attend their events so that you can begin to build your ‘village’ of supporters who can offer you advice and words of wisdom along the way. Stay informed on the latest research, do not be afraid to seek out services, and never stop advocating for your child.”

Advocating for your child might sometimes feel like a daunting task. Fortunately, it is a road you do not have to walk alone. There are other parents who are on similar journeys who you can connect with, medical professionals who want to see your child succeed, and organizations designed to help parents manage the challenges they can face when advocating for their child with disabilities.

We want our children to succeed, and it’s encouraging to know there are so many others that want the same, and are there to offer help, support and guidance. Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions and to stand up for the things you know are right. You know your child and you know what they need best. Trust your gut and move forward in confidence knowing that you are the best advocate for your child and their rights, education, inclusion and health will always be worth standing up for.

Jungle Jim’s International Market

f you live near one of its two locations, you may take Jungle Jim’s for granted. But, if you haven’t been, it’s a must-experience for the whole family. Yes, you can do your normal shopping at Jungle Jim’s American grocery, but the fun begins with the international and specialty items offered.

ISocial Studies Up Close

Are your kids doing a report on England? Grab some British teas or biscuits. Studying Cinco de Mayo? There’s an aisle for Mexican food. Looking for more exotic fare? It’s there, too. International fare does have designated aisles, but it is also intertwined through the other departments, including cheese, beer and wine, and fresh produce that includes varieties you’ve never heard of before.

Locales & Offerings

Each of Jungle Jim’s locations is different, but both offer over 200,000 square feet with over 180,000 items. Fairfield was the original location and started with a roadside fruit stand.

Eastgate was built in 2012 and is a more modern interpretation, with wacky displays like a hot sauce drone and candy castle.

Events are plentiful at Jungle Jim’s, from cooking classes for kids and adults to fests, such as the International Beer Festival (June 14-15), Weekend of Fire (in August) and the International Wine Festival (in November).

In short, Jungle Jim’s is a Little Foodie destination that shouldn’t be missed!

Ready, Set, Summer!

Prepping Your Autistic Kid for Summer Camp

or many kids, summer is the best time for outdoor activities and spending time with peers.

For children on the autism spectrum, summer might also come with extra challenges, including preparing for and attending summer camp. That’s because at camp, children with autism won’t be experiencing the typical everyday routines they are used to. Nor will they be in a familiar environment. Plus, they may be meeting new people and trying to make new friends.

All of these and more can contribute to your and your children’s anxiety about summer camp. So, we talked with Erika Trump, a pediatric occupational therapist focusing on sensory integration. Read on for her best tips for helping you and your child prepare for a fun and successful summer camp experience.

Pick the Right Summer Camp

First off, set your child up for success by picking the best camp for their needs.

“Be strategic in choosing a camp,” Trump says. “A child that has never been away from you may have difficulty at a sleep away camp in another state.”

Other factors include asking yourself if your child prefers extra movement. If so, they may struggle in a camp that requires a lot of seated work, Trump says. Also, a child who has challenges in new situations might want to attend a camp that their friends or siblings are already attending. Depending on all these factors, the camp

you pick for your child will look different to fit those needs.

Help Your Child Imagine Camp

Children with autism can have difficulty in new situations, where they don’t know what to expect. “The parent is always the expert on their child, and this is the prime time to use that expertise to think through all the aspects of camp to determine where challenges might arise, and provide support or accommodations to help create the most positive experience,” Trump says.

Find ways to help your child mentally prepare for camp, such as showing them pictures and videos featuring summer camp, reading stories about summer camp, or even visiting the exact camp they will be attending ahead of time. “If possible, meeting a staff member or counselor ahead of time can also be helpful to allow a child with autism to find a person that’s familiar once they get to camp,” Trump says.

Talk with the Camp’s Leaders

It may seem obvious, but you know your child best. “You know what makes them great and what things create challenges,” Trump says. “So consider all the physical, sensory and social components of camp, and identify where barriers might exist and create supports to overcome these barriers.”

It can be helpful for you to have a conversation with the camp staff about supports that work well

for your child and identifying situations that could be stressful or triggering. “For example, if a staffer knows that your child has difficulty with loud noises and everyone at the camp eats all together in a loud environment, they may be able to provide an alternative place to eat or provide headphones to reduce overwhelm from the noise,” Trump says.

This could also be a good time to consult others who know your child well and who can offer valuable insights to support your child. “Don’t forget about others who are a part of your child’s life, like therapists or teachers,” Trump says. Ask them to weigh in on how their environments, like the school room, playground or therapy rooms, have impacted your child. If the summer camp has these spaces or something similar, think about how to prepare your child for these new spaces through the therapist or teacher guidance.

Don’t Forget to be Excited!

Though your child may have their fears about summer camp, it is important to frame this experience as a positive one for your child. “Camp is often a core memory for kids, and it shouldn’t be any different for autistic children,” Trump says. “Have faith that you have prepared your child for this moment.”

Everything you have helped your child through up until now will have laid a strong foundation that will prepare them for this new experience, too.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AT EVERY STAGE

Women’s health needs change as they age, and it’s important to adapt.

Awoman’s reproductive health goes hand-inhand with her overall well-being. That’s why it is important to prioritize and understand our reproductive health needs at every stage of life. Whether it's finding the right doctor or adapting to the changes that come with age, it’s good to be proactive and informed about your reproductive health needs.

Finding the Right Doctor

One of the most important steps in maintaining good reproductive health is finding a doctor who understands your unique needs and guides you on the right path. Here are some tips for finding the perfect doctor for you.

Ask for recommendations. Reach out to friends, family or local parenting groups (online or in real life) to get recommendations for reputable healthcare providers. Personal experiences can help you find doctors who prioritize patient care and will work with the issues you might be experiencing.

Do your research. Take advantage of online resources, such as local directories, healthcare review websites, or the websites of hospitals and clinics. Look for doctors who specialize in women's reproductive health and have a solid reputation in the community.

Consider the location. When choosing a doctor, think about things like the doctor's office location, wait times and office hours. Ideally, you want a doctor whose office is conveniently located and flexible with scheduling. A local doctor can make a big difference, especially for busy moms.

Verify insurance coverage. If you’re using insurance, make sure that the doctor you're considering accepts your insurance plan.

Schedule an initial consultation. You’ve found a great doctor — now it’s time to make a visit! Book an initial consultation with your potential doctor to discuss your specific concerns, priorities and health history. This meeting will help you gauge their communication style, approach to patient care, and ensure that you feel comfortable entrusting them with your reproductive health.

Changes in Reproductive Health as You Age

Just as our lives and bodies change with time, so does our reproductive health. Here are some ways that our health needs change as you age.

In Your 20s and 30s:

For many women, the 20s and 30s are prime reproductive years. You’ll want to focus on:

Regular Check-ups: Schedule annual gynecological exams to monitor reproductive health, get necessary screenings, and discuss contraception options.

30 OH PARENT .COM / APRIL 2024

Family Planning: If starting a family is a goal, consult your doctor for preconception counseling, personalized advice and guidance on prenatal care.

In Your 40s and 50s:

As women transition into peri-menopause and menopause, their reproductive health changes a lot. During this time of life, you will want to pay attention to:

Menopause Symptoms: Yes, even women in their 40s start getting pre-menopause symptoms! Some of the symptoms of menopause (or perimenopause) include hot flashes, night sweats, and changes in mood or sleep patterns. Consult your doctor for guidance on managing these symptoms.

Bone Health: Most healthy women won’t need a bone density test until they’re 65, but depending on your individual risk factors, your doctor might recommend this screening earlier. Also discuss calcium and vitamin D intake to prevent osteoporosis, which becomes more common during this stage.

Regular Screenings: Women in their 40s and 50s need yearly mammogram screenings for breast health. Consult your doctor for their guidance on cervical and colon cancer screenings.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): If you are experiencing severe menopausal symptoms, discuss the potential benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy with your doctor.

Taking a proactive approach to your reproductive health is important at every stage of life. By finding the right doctor and understanding how reproductive health changes as you age, you can ensure that you receive the care and support you need for years to come.

Helping

Heartfelt Tidbits

refugees, immigrants and their families call Cincinnati home.

ransitioning to American life can be tough for immigrants. Heartfelt Tidbits offers a helping hand and support for recent immigrants to Southwestern Ohio. We talked to Sheryl Rajbhandari, the founder and executive director of Heartfelt Tidbits, to learn more about this important organization helping people.

What challenges do recent immigrants face in our area?

Immigrants arrive with expectations from what they’ve heard about America. Some will say they expected to start working after a few days and move into a home. After arriving, they realize everything is unfamiliar and it’s difficult to get their footing. It takes time to get work authorization, and they are consumed with worry about how they’ll get by until they can work. Heartfelt

Tidbits assists by connecting individuals to its volunteers and programming, and surrounds them with a community.

What programs do you have to support young immigrants?

Children, while scared, are eager to explore their new home. They engage in Heartfelt Tidbit’s enrichment programs, yoga, art, spending time with volunteers who take them to the library, zoo, parks and attending school. Learning English is their numberone priority, and these programs assist with this while they’re making friends at the same time.

Can you tell us about your makerspace programs?

Women and men who are interested are invited to attend Heartfelt Tidbits’ Makerspace sewing and art programs. This provides a great opportunity to make friends, learn a skill and practice speaking English. Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are available multiple times per week. Volunteer instructors quickly become friends with their students. As the friendship evolves, culture, food and more details are shared during the class.

Tell us about your community gardens. Where are they located and how do they help?

Our Franciscan Gardens is a partnership between Heartfelt Tidbits and the Franciscan Ministries. The gardens

have assisted with building community, improving overall mental health, providing fresh food and has enabled families to teach their children a skill they learned when they were young in their home country. They often say it’s the only part of their home that they can share.

They are able to grow food that is familiar and introduce other gardeners to new vegetables. Since the initial garden began, other gardens were created to help fill the demand for land.

How can people get involved with Heartfelt Tidbits?

If you’d like to learn more about Heartfelt Tidbits, visit heartfelttidbits.com. The volunteer link shares a variety of opportunities to get involved.
