T

hat’s a phrase bound to set off a reaction at your house. After months of homework, projects and tests, finally your student (and you!) can enjoy a reprieve from the rigid schedule of the school year. On the last day, you can almost hear a collective sigh emanating from every parent and child.

So how do you celebrate the start of this most anticipated time of year? We suggest taking a look at our Ten Indy “Must Do” Summer Activities list and our Fairs, Fests and Feasts guide for some ideas to kick off the season right. There’s so much our area offers kids and families, your only dilemma may be wondering how you can squeeze it all in. (And for some tips on how to work in a little exercise into your kids’ lazy days of summer, check out our article Sneaking in Fitness.)

As much as summer provides the rest and relaxation we all need from the school year, having our kids take a complete hiatus from academics can make their transition back to class in the fall a rocky one.

This STEM program (which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) will introduce young children to the wonders and excitement of science, engaging them with the valuable resources of the university’s research facilities, staff, laboratories and learning centers on the IUPUI campus. Family-centered care puts less stress on kids. And parents.

Undergoing a medical procedure can be a scary experience for a young patient. It’s often even more stressful for the child’s parents. That’s why Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent has created a pediatric gastroenterology center that’s specifically focused on the needs of the entire family.

“As a parent, when your child is not comfortable and happy, you’re not happy,” says Dr. Susan Maisel, medical director of pediatric gastroenterology at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent.

“That was the catalyst behind our program. Our goal is to provide the most medically advanced diagnosis and treatment, all in a manner that is the least intrusive and disruptive to our young patients.”

The hospital’s family-centered endoscopy program – unique among area pediatric hospitals – allows parents to stay with their child who is undergoing a procedure. “When we do our endoscopic exams,” explains Dr. Maisel, “the families are invited into the room so they are a participant. We explain everything that we're looking at during the screening and talk about treatment.

As a result, they have a full understanding of what procedures we are going to do and why we're going to do it.”

In Dr. Maisel’s experience, calmer children tend to lead to calmer parents, and vice versa. “The children are much more reassured when the parents are by their side,” she says. “And it’s calming to the parents when they see that their children are very comfortable. We don't usually put an IV in or draw blood until after they are asleep under anesthesia, so it's a painless experience for the children and that makes it painless for the parents.”

Dr. Maisel’s team of physicians and nurse-practitioners sees children needing treatment for a number of varied conditions, from aerodigestive issues involving swallowing and congestion, to chronic auto-immune problems such as Crohn’s disease, to conditions related to diseases of the liver, pancreas and gall bladder.

“Patients may need to see a number of different specialists,” says Dr. Maisel. “That helps explain our focus on cross-specialty integrated care at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent.

We all work together in a coordinated way so that the patient – and the parents – can see all the specialists and therapists they need, all in one day. Then we come together as a team to discuss their multiple problems and provide complete care so the patient is covered on every front regarding their illness.”

June is the perfect month to head downtown and take advantage of some special summer events planned with families in mind. Choose your favorites and mark your calendars!

Kid's Ultimate Fitness Challenge The Kid's Ultimate Fitness Challenge is the nation's largest mobile fitness event travelling from coast-to-coast dedicated to helping keep kids healthy and active. Kids of all ages get the opportunity to flex their muscles by participating in a time-based obstacle course that includes sprinting, jump roping, wall crawls, hurdles, jumping jacks, sit-ups, tunnel crawls, a 20 foot confidence climb and a 60 meter dash to the finish! The event features loads of other activities for the whole family to enjoy, including gaming for all ages, food, rides and on-site programming designed to inspire kids and families to live a more active and healthy lifestyle. Come to American Legion Mall June 6 at 10 am for this free event.

Chess Club for Kids Mental exercise is important too! Get your child involved in a chess game at Indy Reads Books every Tuesday at 5:30 pm. Pro chess instructor Colin Hargreaves uses a unique and exciting method of teaching that makes learning easy and fun. Children should feel free to play organically but can receive lessons from the instructors during each meeting. Come for a friendly tournament and stay to learn fun variations on this classic game.

Indy Sports Teams Cheer on your hometown heroes! Bring the family to one of Indy’s great stadiums to see your favorite teams play this June. The Indianapolis Indians play fifteen games at Victory Field in June, kicking off the first of the month. Help your child become an equal opportunity sports fan by rooting on the Indiana Fever as they begin their season in Bankers Life Fieldhouse on June 6. There will be four other chances to see Tamika Catchings and the rest of the team in the month of June. Last but not least, don’t forget about the boys in blue! The Indy Eleven play their final home game of the season June 13 at IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Expect a sell-out crowd for the Eleven so buy your tickets soon.

Original Farmers Market and Statehouse Market An Indianapolis tradition continues every Wednesday from 9:30 am – 1:30 pm through October at the Indianapolis City Market. Vendors from all over the state sell everything from fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses to baked goods

and unique spices and herbs. Rest assured that everything on display is in-season, fresh and selected at peak harvest time. If you miss a Wednesday Farmer’s Market you can still get your fix of healthy, fresh food at the Statehouse Market. Each Thursday through October from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm at the Indiana Statehouse and Government Center Campus, local vendors sell vegetables, fruits, flowers, milk, eggs, pork, beef, lamb and more at this outdoor market.

Along with farmer’s stands, Indy’s favorite food trucks will be at the Statehouse to serve delicious and nutritious lunches to hungry market goers.

Summer Science Keeping a spark for learning year round Becky Wolfe of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

For many families, the end of the school year heralds the beginning of flexible schedules and time to let your children be children. However, learning does not need to stop. It’s a great time to dig into family science. One of best ways to start family investigations is to think about science-related questions that your children ask. Do your kids ever ask about insects in the backyard, space exploration or what makes a car move? Use these questions as your inspiration and springboard for investigations!

When choosing books for a summer reading program, include a few non-fiction books to read as a family.

Rainy days are an opportunity to start family summer science. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has a regular feature on Pinterest and its Facebook page titled “Saturday Science.” These short, easy to follow science investigations use common items from your home. Take time to ask your children to predict what will happen in the experience or ask them to describe their observations.

Reinforce science learning by encouraging children to share their observations from the experience with a family member.

Consider a long-term project for your children to engage them in science throughout the summer.

This can be as simple as planting flower or vegetable seeds and observing changes over time. Older children may enjoy a long-term engineering project such as designing a Rube Goldberg machine or building a kite.

One of my favorite parts of summer revolves around warm evenings, which are perfect for exploring nighttime science. For young children, head outside on a clear evening and look for stars and the moon. Ask your children to describe what they see and how the sky is different from daytime. Older children may enjoy a visit to the museum’s SpaceQuest planetarium to learn about the night sky and how they can search for constellations at home.

Family trips are often a highlight of summer for children. Traveling is also an opportunity to explore science not available at home.

Research nature parks or science museums that provide new opportunities for your children.

Some of my favorite memories include traveling to a dinosaur dig site with The Children’s Museum (check out our website to learn how

you can participate), visiting new geologic sites such as sand dunes, visiting a wild herd of bison and traveling underground into a mine.

Enjoy your summer and the opportunities to explore science as a family!

Free Kids Koncerts

Jam along to some free musical entertainment this summer at Carmel Clay Park. Their Kids Koncerts offer a morning full of music, dancing and sing-alongs beginning on June 2 with the Jump and Hop Band. After moving those happy feet, cool off with some shaved Kona Ice. Original Farmer’s Market at City Market

Enjoy the sights and sounds of the City Market’s Original Farmer’s Market between Alabama and Delaware Streets.

Delicious produce and local fruit, fresh meats, eggs and cheese make this a one-stop shop for some of summer’s greatest goods. This urban market runs every Wednesday from 9 am to 1:30 pm through October.

Don’t forget a tote!

This popular event takes place on Thursday, June 11 from 9 am to 5 pm on Monument Circle. Don’t leave without sampling “The Works” – a shortcake with strawberries, ice cream and whipped topping.

Festival-goers are asked to bring canned goods or a monetary donation for the Food Bank of Central Indiana. (This is a cash only event.)

Splash into summer at Forest Park Aquatic Center in Noblesville. From the Olympic-sized swimming pool to the sand-play area, Forest Park offers multiple water slides, a smaller activity pool for youngsters and ample shade for mom and dad.

Summer Learning Loss Preventing a backslide in academic skills Emily Ungar

T

The need to read

he last day of school is an event every kid (and many parents) can hardly wait for – finally a break from the tests, homework and projects that dominate our daily schedules.

Unfortunately, viewing summer vacation as a complete respite from academia can result in significant catch up work when the next school year begins. Having so much time outside the classroom can chip away at the skills kids have worked so hard to build all year long. What can parents do to help their student hit the ground running in the fall?

“Reading is important for all ages, but is especially critical for early learners leading up to fourth grade,” says Willse from the NSLA. Koenig suggests that children read every day.

“According to Scholastic Parents Online, research shows that reading just six books during the summer can keep a struggling reader from regressing.”

LearningRx offers a 4 to 8 week Summer Slide Booster program to keep cognitive skills sharp and ready for the new school year. The Indianapolis Public Library also kicks off its summer reading program on June 1st. “We find that the summer reading program goes a long way toward encouraging children to maintain their reading habits and ensuring academic success,” says Jon Barnes, Communications Specialist at the Library.

Closing the gap “Every parent wants to see their child do well in school, and summer plays an important role in boosting achievement year-round,” says Katie Willse, Chief Program Officer at the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA). “Students can lose up to two months of essential math and reading skills during the summer months, but there is plenty families and caregivers can do to support learning during the summer.”

Youth with low-resource backgrounds are at even greater risk for losing skills. Roderick Wheeler, Director of Community Impact for the Central Indiana Community Foundation and a lead staff member for the Summer Youth Program Fund, says “Two-thirds of the achievement gap can be attributed to the skills lost during the summer, especially between kindergarten and 8th grade. Koenig also recommends a simple brain game called Mental Tic Tac Toe to help retain math skills: “Similar to traditional Tic Tac Toe, this game uses a ‘mental grid’ numbered 1 to 9. Players remember where their opponent has already been and call out an unoccupied space number. If a player calls out an occupied space, they lose. If a player gets three in a row, they win.” This game helps promote attention, logic and reasoning, and working memory.

Everyday skill boosters Parents and caregivers can help students keep their math and reading abilities sharp by providing everyday opportunities to use them. A trip to the grocery store can involve counting, sorting and calculations with money. Keeping a journal or scrapbook about summer vacation promotes writing. Reading a book and comparing it to its film version encourages critical thinking. By finding creative ways for your children to practice these skills in their daily life, and taking advantage of educational programs offered in your community, you can avoid a lapse in learning and give your kids the tools to begin their next school year with confidence.

GONE BAD Tips for handling a visit that unexpectedly goes south

ho hasn’t experienced a playdate

they thought would never end?

Maybe your son’s pal from school has arrived for the afternoon and views your home as a new jungle gym to be conquered. Or your daughter’s little friend has no problem backtalking and challenging any comment you make (a trait your daughter seems to be admiring.)

Sometimes the little offender has an impressive range of profanity worked into their dialogue. The worst visits however, seem to end in actual casualties, like bruises and stitches.

Many parents have experienced the playdate gone terribly awry before. Whether you are the one in charge or the one whose child came home from the fray, it can be easy to overreact, point fingers and increase the intensity of the situation.

But there are better ways to handle these types of incidents. Beverly Mussetter, a therapist and the senior clinical supervisor at LifeSolutions, has some tips on how to be ready the next time you have to handle one of these sticky situations.

S tay c a l m It can be difficult to keep your emotions in check when a child you’re hosting misbehaves while at your house, but maintaining a calm demeanor is your best course of action. “Especially if it’s a new playdate friend and the child doesn’t know [you] very well, don’t shame the child, yell at them or put them in a timeout,” advises Mussetter. Try not to get too emotionally charged about a situation before hearing all the details.

R e a l ly l i s t e n Instead, the first thing parents should do is get the whole story. Mussetter suggests sitting down with the child and asking if they’re angry about something, tired, sleepy, etc. Sometimes an underlying problem can be identified, and when that is solved, the reason for the misbehavior is solved too.

R e d i r e c t bac k to b e t t e r b e h av i o r After listening to everyone involved and figuring out what really happened, take the opportunity to enforce your rules and values with your own kids and explain to your guest about how things are done differently in your house. If the problem was inappropriate language or mean behavior from your young visitor, tell them that your family doesn’t say those words or treat people that way. Explain that if they are going to come to your house again, they will have to respect your rules.

By getting to know mom and dad a bit, you can better understand how they choose to parent.

Problematic situations are easier to address when families have some familiarity with each other.

If your child had a bad experience at someone else’s home, is it small enough for you to just let go?

Consider carefully the possible aftermath of deciding to make an issue of whatever happened.

If you do decide to have a conversation about the event, try chatting in person versus communicating by phone or text. If a parent becomes extremely defensive or angry, ending the conversation and moving on may be your best choice. As Mussetter says, kids model what they learn at home, which may explain the reason for the difficulty in the first place.

If you would like to have future playdates with this child, or a valuable friendship with the other parent may be jeopardized, you’ll have to bring the issue up tactfully – as hard as that might be.

No matter what happens, Mussetter encourages parents to always remain calm and try to get to the bottom of a situation by listening to all children involved. Playdates gone bad can provide an opportunity to learn about another type of family, their values and their situation. All of this information provides teachable moments to pass on to your own kids – who will hopefully be invited to many playdates of their own.

Research to Real World: How Singing Captivates Children

the vocal melodies were “old” whether they were actually old or new. It’s as if vocal melodies were all familiar, even though the children had never heard the new melodies.

Overall, this study suggests that we may have a biological response to vocal music that triggers an arousal response and automatic attention.

Perhaps listening to vocal melodies triggers a premotor neural response that does not occur while listening to an instrument. In other words, when you hear someone else’s voice, you imagine yourself singing, whereas when you hear an instrument, you do not imagine yourself playing that instrument.

When I sing my favorite songs to my 8-year-old son, he lovingly tells me, “stop it, Mom.” But there was a time when he would stop everything he was doing and listen to my voice – cuddle and coo as an infant, ask for more as a toddler, or sing along as a preschooler. Now he’s developing an independent sense of music and will immediately pause when his favorite song comes on the radio.

There is something inherently pleasurable about listening to people sing music. When babies listen to their own caregivers sing music they are also practicing early attention and memory skills that will bootstrap language learning. Cultures across the world have created lullabies for babies, and even caregivers’ speech sounds like music. In a study looking at babies’ sustained attention to voices, Drs. Nakata and Trehub at the University of Toronto in Canada recorded mothers speaking and singing to their 6-month-old infants, and later showed these recordings to the infants. The babies were reasonably interested in the maternal speech, but when they heard their moms singing, they stopped fidgeting and stared, mesmerized, at the videos.

Singing captures and maintains attention, even in infancy. It’s no wonder, then, that music is such a great vehicle for carrying information to be remembered. Most of us learned the alphabet set to music.

I can only remember the order of the planets by singing “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizza [Pies].” A recent study out of the University of Washington showed that even 11-month-old babies remember syllable sequences better when they are sung rather than spoken.

But have you noticed that so many baby toys are instrumental rather than vocal? All of my son’s baby swings and play centers and even “rattles” had colorful buttons he could push that would produce digitized versions of Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik “or Beethoven’s “Fifth Symphony.” Does instrumental music capture attention the same way vocal music does?

And do we remember instrumental and vocal music in similar ways?

Researchers are only beginning to study these questions. A group at the University of Toronto looked at memory for vocal (e.g., music sung using “la la la”) versus instrumental music in children ages 5-11 years of age. The children listened to tunes they had never heard in a listening game with a cartoon owl. After a short break, the children were presented with new and “old” tunes (those they had heard during the listening game) and asked if the cartoon owl had played the song before. They found that the 7- to 11-year-old groups of children accurately labeled new and old tunes for the vocal melodies better than the instrumental melodies. The younger 5- to 6-year-olds, however, thought

FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM Adapting swim lessons to meet the needs of those on the spectrum Maggie Loiselle

Pool season has arrived, bringing with it swimsuits, sunscreen and, for parents of children with autism, added anxiety over keeping their kids safe around the water.

Accidental drowning is among the leading causes of death for individuals on the spectrum, in large part due to their tendency to wander from safe environments. According to the National Autism Association, between 2009 and 2011, drowning accounted for 91 percent of the total U.S. deaths reported in children with autism ages 14 and younger subsequent to elopement.

That’s why teaching children on the spectrum to be comfortable and confident around water is a key element in adapted swim lessons offered throughout the Indianapolis area. “The ultimate goal is to have them learn, if they fall in, how to get to the side or back float,” says Katie Gipson, who owns Stony Creek Swim Center’s Aqua Abilities, a specialized program for those with special needs. “Just like with any lessons, we’re teaching these kids to be water wise.”

One-on-one instruction Of course, not all children with autism react to water the same way. Some may show no fear at the pool, while for others, just the feel of water can cause sensory overload.

Jillian Guthrie, aquatics director at the Baxter YMCA on Indianapolis’ south side, says individualized instruction is key for children with special needs. It’s the cornerstone of the WAVES program, or Water Access for Very Exceptional Swimmers, the special needs-focused lessons piloted there. Guthrie says they have some children who run to the pool and others who start just by simply splashing water on their feet. “That’s why being one-on-one with an instructor is so important. The needs are just so different.”

Adapting teaching techniques Engaging children with autism in the pool can also take some creativity on the instructor’s part. Teachers may give additional physical and verbal cues, use a picture board to help nonverbal swimmers better communicate or keep kids’ attention with wacky wigs and costumes.

The swim lessons may look more like playtime than serious work, but the goal is still the same – for children to be comfortable and safe around the water. “It’s important to think about how we teach,” says Carolyn Sprehe, who gives swim lessons with I Can We Can Pediatric Therapy at JCC Indianapolis. “You have to think about all the areas of child development – physical, cognitive and social skills. It’s just adapting to whatever the child needs.”

Sticking with it Swim instructors stress that while progress may be slow, success in the water comes when families stick with lessons.

Gipson tells the story of a boy with autism who was terrified of the water and clung to her, lesson after lesson. Gradually, he began holding on less tightly and then graduated to grasping floating rings instead. Now he’s swimming independently. “It might take us two years, but when it happens, it is awesome,” Gipson exclaims. “In his mom’s mind, she thought it would never happen. But, look, it’s happening! He’s swimming next to me! Those are the moments that never get old.”

Learning how to swim also gives children with autism a new way to connect with siblings and peers, Sprehe says. She recommends parents start their children early in the process and stay consistent with lessons. “Especially for a child on the autism spectrum, the younger they start, it will help them feel more comfortable more quickly. The wonderful thing about swimming is it can be a lifetime exercise for them, keeping them active as they age.”

DENTISTRY Making appointments go as smoothly as possible Maggie Loiselle

The dentist’s chair isn’t a favorite destination for anyone, but add in sensory sensitivities, oral aversions or communication issues, and a simple cleaning becomes a daunting task for parents of children with special needs.

“If you’re with someone who looks at the condition before the child, you’re in a lose-lose situation. You want someone who treats each child as an individual,” Satterfield-Siegel says.

Sara Ferris was shocked when her daughter Susannah, age three and newly diagnosed as mildly on the autism spectrum, was turned away by two dentists who were uneasy about treating a mostly nonverbal child with sensory issues. “At the second dentist, we got all the way in the office and almost in the chair when they came in to tell us they couldn’t treat her,” she recalls.

Prepare your child for the experience

Ferris eventually found a dentist who had experience working with kids with special needs, Dr. Mark Kahn on Indianapolis’ southwest side, and the difference was immediate. “When Susannah sometimes won’t sit back in the chair, she sits on my lap, and the hygienist cleans her teeth that way,” she says. “We’ve been there four years, and it’s wonderful that they think outside the box.”

Getting creative is the key to helping children with special needs feel comfortable at the dentist, local experts say. Here are their best tips:

Be picky about practitioners Spend the time to find a dentist who understands the unique challenges of children with special needs and whose staff will work with families to create a positive experience for the child, says Dr. Jennifer Satterfield-Siegel of Special Smiles Dentistry in Carmel. She recommends parents visit prospective dental offices alone ahead of time to see how the practitioner interacts with parents and children.

Once an appointment has been made, Dr. Jamie Steele of Steele Pediatric Dentistry on Indianapolis’ east side suggests parents set up a time beforehand for their child to take a tour.

“This gives them a chance to familiarize themselves with the office in a non-threatening way,” she says. “Take a few pictures of the office to use when talking to your child about their upcoming appointment.”

Use positive language Parents should especially watch how they talk about the dentist, says Mary Anne Litwicki, a hygienist for nearly 40 years, including the last 16 at Riley Hospital for Children Pediatric Dentistry at Indiana University Health. Avoid words like shot, poke, scrape, yank and drill.

“If you tell them how much you hate going to the dentist, they will pick up on that,” Litwicki stresses.

“Instead, talk about how the dentist is going to tickle their teeth, and how they might get to see some pictures of their mouth.”

Practice at home Children with special needs can be unsettled by the bright lights, unfamiliar instruments and reclined position at the dentist. Simulating the environment at home can help, Steele says.

“Have your child lie down on the couch or bed and do a practice dental visit. Use a flashlight and a mirror to look at the teeth. You can even use a powered toothbrush to simulate the vibration and sound associated with the polishing hand piece.”

Regular tooth brushing can be a challenge for children with special needs, but consistent home care will make their time in the dental chair easier.

Create a brushing routine and set clear time expectations. “There’s no rule that says it has to be done in the bathroom. Try the kitchen or while they’re taking a bath,” Satterfield-Siegel says. “Stick with it, and repeat to yourself, ‘I am doing the right thing!’”

Go slow and be patient It’s not uncommon for children with special needs to require multiple dental visits to accomplish everything that needs to be done. Progress may be slow, but Steele encourages parents to celebrate the small milestones. “Typically, each dental visit gets a little easier,” she says. “If I have a very fearful dental patient who will stand next to mom or dad and let me do an exam, I consider that a victory if they leave happy and have built some confidence.”

Dental Hygiene Tips for Kids With Special Needs

If your child dislikes toothpaste, brush with a dry brush first, then add a small smear of paste for one last go over, just to get some fluoride on their teeth.

Use the handle of a bigger toothbrush to prop your child’s mouth open on one side while you brush the opposite side. It’s tricky, but that way you can avoid getting bit.

Limit sugars. Kids don’t need soda, sweet tea or juice. If they’re allowed to sip all day, the decay rate goes up.

Be mindful that Pediasure is high in needed calories, but also in sugar.

Brush after it is consumed or at least follow with water.

Ask the Teacher Summer reading, trip tips and faded friendships Deb Krupowicz

Q:

I hated reading over summer break when I was a kid. How can I keep my daughter from feeling the same way?

A:

Summer is the best time to make reading fun!

Check out what your local library or area book store might be offering in the way of incentive programs, which often create the excitement that young children need to read over break.

Or create your own program. Make a chart to post in a visible spot with prizes that can be earned at easily reachable intervals. Keep the prizes simple: a chore-free day, choosing the menu for dinner, selecting a family game, inviting a friend over, etc.

Think of ways to change up your daughter’s normal reading routine.

Take a book to the park along with some lemonade, visit a nursing home to read to residents or sit in the backyard for a reading picnic.

Select audio books to enjoy together or have your daughter create her own audio books by recording herself reading, then making a gift out of the recording for a grandparent or friend.

Q:

We have a long driving vacation planned, and it seems like a good opportunity for reinforcing some school skills. What can I do other than give my son workbooks and books to read?

Traveling certainly does present many opportunities for learning, and hours confined to a car turn riders into a captive audience. Plan to create a documentary of your trip. Your son can take pictures each day and then write interesting captions for them in the evening or during the next day’s driving. He could also choose a theme for his photos, like a letter of the alphabet, and snap pictures of places or things that begin with that letter.

Take along books about the states you will be traveling through to read as you go, which can make the journey more enjoyable. At each rest stop, pick up brochures about area attractions. Read through them together for reading practice. If your son reads well, he can create a trivia contest based on what he reads in the brochure to challenge the rest of the family.

To build some math practice into your travels, have your son make some basic calculations along the way. When a sign appears on the highway that gives the mileage to

As the school year ended for my third grade daughter, she experienced some heartache when a classmate told her they were no longer friends.

My daughter is already dreading the beginning of next year. What can I do to help her move past this?

A:

It can be hard not to trivialize friendship problems that come up with kids, but it is important to remember that our children do not have a mature understanding of how friendships come and go.

They are still learning which traits they desire in their friends and which create a recipe for problems. Resist the urge to point out the negatives about the friend who has dumped your daughter.

Help her to focus instead on what she learned about herself and about her friend from their

relationship. What were the positives that she believes she brought to the friendship? Is there anything she would do differently?

This discussion may allow some of your daughter’s weaknesses to surface and will provide a good forum for talking through how important it is to think about our own role in friendships. She may not find any negatives about how she treated her friend, but she may also see that there were times when she might have acted differently. It’s possible that she may even reach the conclusion that the friendship was not a healthy one for her.

After the discussion, don’t belabor the issue. Help your daughter shift her attention to other girls with whom she would like to spend time.

Without the parameters of school schedules and obligations, summer is a perfect time to build new friendships that can be in full swing by the time school starts back up again.

Footnotes: Thoughts from the margins of a mom’s life Sometimes a little advice can be a good thing. Other times, it’s a real headache. I’ve been thinking about the topic recently as my four-year old has appointed himself the advisor of my two-year-old. His recommendations are sometimes thinly-veiled orders, as in "I think you should follow me, Caroline!" Other times, his sage guidance reflects the perspective of someone who has been there. "Don't give the dog your toast Caroline.

Mommy will get mad." But the most dangerous kind of advice, the kind that gives me a headache, is when he teaches my little girl how to do something I really wish she didn't know how to do. For example, last week he taught her how to climb out of her crib.

“Put your foot here, Caroline!" William says, with great enthusiasm. “That’s good. You’re almost there! Put your other leg up.” I process the monologue through a drowsy cloud, dimly aware that William is in his sister’s room. I am more conscious of the fact that it is so early the windows are still dark. I am blithely unaware of what is to come. “Push over, Caroline! Put your feet there!” Cheering erupts from the bedroom across the hall. Caroline has successfully made it out of the crib. She’s free! Children run into our bedroom with wide smiles and clapping hands. I groan and put my face

back into the pillow, knowing that bedtime was about to get complicated.

As suspected, Caroline didn’t need her advisor’s move-by-move instructions for very long. She quickly became adept at placing her feet high up on the crib’s edge and heaving herself back to land. Last night she reappeared upwards of eight times after her bedtime. I could hear William giggling in his room as I walked his sister, once again, back to her crib. Because herein lies the problem: the girl can get out of the bed, but she can’t get back into the bed. Why didn’t the advisor teach her that, I ask you?

This weekend we’re transitioning Caroline to a big-girl bed, and we will start giving her some advice of our own. “Once you’re in your room for the night, stay there.” I have a feeling our advice will not be greeted with cheers, unlike the advice of her brother. Still, on the whole, I’m glad my little girl has an advisor who, at only four years old, can help her achieve things beyond her wildest dreams.

Why “Dad Taxi” is Not a Successful Business Model A Dad Influence

Have you heard about Uber and Lyft? They're kind of like taxi services except the drivers are average joes like you and me, who use their regular car, instead of taxis, to drive people around. I have a friend who drives for Lyft. He seems to like it, makes extra cash and meets new people all at the same time. While I was listening to him talk about it, I thought it seemed like a cool idea. But, since I'm a stay-at-home dad, in order for me to be a driver for Lyft, I'd have to take my kids along with me while I picked people up and took them to their destinations.

I immediately saw all the potential problems this could create.

First, the rider would have to choose very carefully where they sat. He or she could ride shotgun next to me, which would involve sitting on piles of unopened mail, Target receipts, wrappers from suckers the bank hands out and other assorted items in my "mobile office." If that seat wasn't desirable, he or she could choose whether to ride in the captain's seat next to the Blonde Bomber (my daughter), or sit in the third row on sticky sucker sticks and Cheerios between Middle Man (my son) and First Born (my other daughter.)

If I were a passenger and these were my only choices, I'd ask to sit on the roof rack.

Not only would seating be an issue, there would also be some detours along the way.

In addition to having riders sit in the carpool line for preschool drop-off and pickup, I'm certain at least once daily there would be an emergency potty stop, where we would have to deviate from our route to find the nearest grocery store or gas station bathroom.

Many Uber and Lyft drivers let the passengers choose the music during the drive. This would ABSOLUTELY NOT be the case in my van. All passengers would be subject to watching and listening to DVDs such as Rio 2 and Frozen over and over. The only exception to this rule would be if my kids were napping, then there would be the need for absolute silence the entire drive.

Well, it's pretty obvious being a chauffeur is not in my immediate future, unless instead of offering bottles of water and mints to customers like many Lyft drivers do, I offered my passengers noise-canceling headphones and hazmat suits.

Greenwood Freedom Festival
