Best Summer EVER It’s time for a confession. I literally can’t remember the last time my husband and I went on a date. You know, the kind of outing that includes zero kids, and is just you and your spouse. The kind that you book a babysitter for, and wear real clothes for, and visit a restaurant that you might need reservations for. The pandemic has put a lot of things on hold, and date night is one of them. I’m sure you can relate. As busy parents, date night — or any type of anything that doesn’t revolve around kids and parenting — has taken a back seat to the million other things we’ve been dealing with this crazy year. But think of date night as a form of self care. As parents, we need to fill our buckets before we can fill the buckets of others.

HIDDEN GEMS

WORDS BY HALEY PADDOCK

Kid Clubhouse

Summer weather has us ready to make plans for outdoor fun! Sometimes, however, Mother Nature has other ideas. If you find yourself looking for something to do on a rainy day, or simply need a break from the sun, we’ve got the perfect place to explore.

Nestled within the city of Springboro, Kid Clubhouse is sure to delight your entire family. Conveniently located, this indoor gem is just a hop, skip and a jump away from both Cincinnati and Dayton.

The sprawling play place was designed by the parents of three young children. They wanted to create a fun, safe and clean environment that would appeal to both parents and kids, and that’s exactly what they’ve done!

Kid Clubhouse boasts a 2,000 square foot multi-level play area, bounce house, healthy snack bar and special toddler area. The open layout is perfect for parents of multiple children, allowing you to easily keep an eye on both younger and older kids.

Favorite features include the mega screen TV with the big game for dad, and the choice to bring our own snacks or pick from the snack bar. We also love the ability to leave for nap time, and then come back later because admission bracelets are good all day. Speaking of bracelets, everyone gets a wristband with matching numbers that will be checked before leaving — talk about safety and peace of mind!

WORDS BY ALEXANDRA FROST

IDEAS IN SOUTHWEST OHIO FIVE FUN IDEAS FOR YOUR NEXT KID-FREE EVENING OUT ON THE TOWN. After a long, tough year of pandemicinduced staycations and at-home takeout dates with your partner, some couples are venturing out again with precautions. But we might be just a bit dusty on where to go, and what a great date even involves after such a long break. We all know the importance of getting away and spending time with our partners, but sometimes it’s hard to figure out what to do to have an exciting and fresh adventure, especially if you’ve lived in the same area for years. But with a tiny bit of planning and forethought, you can have an unforgettable date night right in town. Once you’ve finally booked your babysitter, check out these must-try dates around Cincinnati and Dayton to rekindle the flame.

10

ohParent.com I June 2021

#1 City-gazing and New Chicken If you are still a little hesitant to hang out in a crowded restaurant or bar, take your food outside and enjoy one of the best views of the city. Take a break from takeout and go for the real thing: try China Gourmet in Oakley (you want to get the New Chicken) and head up the hill to Eden Park’s beautiful city overlook. Don’t be surprised if you find other couples there with the same idea, because it’s a truly captivating view of Cincinnati.

#2 A Kidless Zoo Trip and Throwback Pizza Sure, you’ve seen the giraffes a hundred times — but always with your little ones in tow. That train can have a way more romantic feel when you aren’t worried about your kids falling out of it. Locals sometimes forget that our own city features the second top rated zoo in the country (according to USA Today’s 10best) as we chase our kids around the playground and petting zoo. Spend a little quiet time with your partner at Cincinnati Zoo bird watching, feeding the giraffes without kids crying about slobber, and grabbing a piece of LaRosa’s pizza that Cincy natives know somehow tastes

the best by the slice only from the Zoo and Kings Island. Keep in mind that because of the pandemic, the zoo has bookahead time slot reservations. Multiple times per month, the zoo offers adult sunset safaris, complete with cocktails and dinner options, followed by close encounters with animals and educational small group lessons.

#3 Mariemont Theater and Greater’s

If you haven’t visited the charming historic Mariemont town square, you will appreciate the architecture as well as the date night offerings. Mariemont Theater will have you feeling like you are living out a scene from the movie The Notebook, especially after many of us haven’t seen a movie since pre-pandemic times. The charming theater gives us back everything that the big box theaters took away: a more intimate experience, with just a few movies offered at a time, and a real walk-up ticket window that adds to the throwback feel. Afterwards, try the f lavor of the month at Graeter’s and stroll around the square, taking in the sights. Parking can be a challenge, so wear some comfortable walking shoes.

#4 The Pine Club and the Air Force Museum You haven’t really had a steak in the tri-state area until you’ve visited Dayton’s classic restaurant, The Pine Club, recognized by The New York Times and visited by hundreds of celebrities passing through town. Even if you are anti-tomato, you will be asking for more of their famous stewed tomatoes. Pair this amazing dinner with a trip to the National Museum of the US Air Force, one of Dayton’s massive but still somehow hidden treasures. Walk through each hanger to relive events with your favorite history buff. Don’t miss the current temporary exhibit all about the wonders of space that runs through September.

#5 Oregon District and Riverscape With architecture dating back to the 1800s, just walking around the Oregon District in Dayton is pretty entertaining — but come hungry. Whether you are ready to bar hop from one craft brewery to the next, or sit down for a full meal, the options are endless. Some favorites include Modern Ol’ Time Tavern Dining at The Trolley Stop, where you will want to try the Macho NOT-chos, or head to Thai 9 for the most authentic Thai food in the city. (Heads up: It’s a business casual dress code, so no tank tops.) Before or after dinner, explore Riverscape, the Great Miami River-front park winding through Dayton that offers summer concerts, beautiful landscaping, and biking.

PARENTING

WORDS BY AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION

Take Camp Skills to School Millions of parents chose camp for their child or teen because of the immense benefits of the experience. Not only does camp foster making new friends and learning 21st century life skills like independence, problem-solving and teamwork, but it’s also fun! As the summer fades and children return to school, here are a few helpful hints to remind parents to pack a few extra items from camp in the school backpack:

• Confidence: All through the camp experience, children and youth have tried new activities and been successful; they feel empowered. • Curiosity: Camp has given children and youth the chance to explore, study, and observe in an experiential learning environment. • Character: Camp has challenged children and youth to develop character — through fostering respect for each other, a sense of community, and the ability to solve problems.

How can parents help transfer these skills into the classroom? American Camp Association suggests the following tips: • Remember to Remind: When campers come home, they often keep the spirit of camp alive for a week or two, and then things trail off. Use positive reinforcement to remind campers that you appreciate the positive attitude and willingness to help that they developed at camp. • Become Camp-Like: Families can set the example by demonstrating a willingness to change something at home in order to sustain some of the changes campers have made. Bob Ditter, a clinical social worker and psychotherapist, suggests,

12

ohParent.com I June 2021

“Parents have to make a decision. Are they willing to change something in their practice at home in order to sustain some of the changes their kids have made, such as having a job wheel that you put up on the wall outlining chores?” • Everyone Gets a Say: At camp, children help determine how their day is spent. Their advice is actively sought, and they feel like equal players. Emulating this environment at home allows them to continue to stand up for themselves and feel like a contributing member of the household.

• Avoid the Negative Compliment: Don’t inadvertently sabotage efforts by pointing out differences in behavior. Instead of saying, “you never did this before,” praise the behaviors in a genuine way. For example, “I noticed how patient you were with your little brother.”

Southwest Ohio Parent spoke with Goey Mueller, director of Flag Football Fanatics, to learn just how his organization stands out in the world of kids sports.

How did you get started with Flag Football Fanatics? I was a first grade teacher and always enjoyed sports and kids. I played flag football when in college. I started offering flag football tournaments for college-age students back in 2004. I decided to start offering the same product to kids in fall of 2008.

ohParent.com I June 2021

Our goal is to provide an experience unmatched. We've provided opportunities for kids to play venues such as Paul Brown Stadium, The Horseshoe at Ohio State and countless other local high school venues. We also produce highlight videos weekly on YouTube so kids can feel like they are stars. Our program continues to grow but I believe it's because of our Volunteer Coaches and Staff. I prefer people who truly care about the kids.

How many kids typically sign up for a football season?

What else should our readers know about Flag Football Fanatics?

In our entire organization, we have roughly 4,800 to 4,900 in fall of 2021. Between Dayton and Cincinnati, I would say we have about 2,500 kids playing.

Tell us about the charities you donate to, and how you choose which organizations to support. We have a big event at the end of our spring season called "Champions for Charity." This event is typically played at the end of our spring season in The Horseshoe at Ohio State. This event has produced over $50,000 to charities. We have donated to Make-A-Wish, IknowIcan.org, Buddy Ball, Nellie's CatWalk 4 Kids, Children's Hospital, The Freedom Story and Rockin' Out Cancer. We try to donate to local charities.

Do you have a program in place for kiddos who might not be able to afford the fees to participate in sports? We offer around 50 to 100 scholarships each season. A parent needs to complete our scholarship application and we approve them for reduced costs based on their information.

We offer spring, summer and fall leagues. At the end of the spring and fall seasons, we have big tournaments played at Paul Brown Stadium or The Horseshoe. We are always looking for good coaches and quality people to join our team. Any child ages 4 to 14 is eligible to join.

For more information on upcoming leagues or current programs, visit playfanatics.com.

SOUTHWEST OHIO HAS LOTS OF GREAT PLACES TO PLAY! WORDS BY KAREN RING

Summer and playgrounds go hand in hand. Thankfully, Southwest Ohio is home to some amazing places to play – from state-of-the-art playgrounds to children’s gardens to natural playscapes, here are a few of our favorite places to spend a summer day!

PlayScape. Also, two words: Mud Zone. Your kids will LOVE this East Side gem! (Note: admission to the PlayScape is free for members and included with daily admission for nonmembers.)

Summit Park 4335 Glendale-Milford Road, Blue Ash

1. Smale Riverfront West Mehring Way, Cincinnati

Smale Riverfront Park has several gardens, parks and trails that are great for adults and families. For kids, there are four main attractions: the Main Street Fountain, Heekin/PNC Adventure Playground, P&G go Vibrantscape and, of course, Carol Ann’s Carousel. Bonus: The Main Street Fountain and P&G go Vibrantscape are at the top of our list for summer fun water play.

26

ohParent.com I June 2021

5.

2. Summit Park in Blue Ash is arguably the most innovative playground in the city. This large park is constantly adding more and more exciting features, most recently opening an epic playscape with both land and water features. The creative playground and paved walking trails provide fun for everyone – and be sure to bring your bikes for the various trails!

3.

West Fork Playland

4764 West Fork Rd., Cincinnati

West Fork is unlike any other playground in the city. It more than meets the accessibility guidelines put in place by playground experts and it is truly

a place space for everyone. It has so many unique features, including a large infant/toddler play area with two imaginative play houses, a colorful maze that also has texture to its walls for those children with sensory issues, a 14-foot mega tower with plenty of chances to climb and slide, and perhaps the best feature – a zip line!

4.

Cincinnati Nature Center PlayScape

4949 Tealtown Road, Milford

Imagine a labyrinth of trails, giant logs, kid-sized creeks, rocks, trees and mud. Everything is connected and contained… and your kids can touch, feel and manipulate to their hearts’ content. That’s the Marge & Charles Schott Cincinnati Nature Center

Ault Park Playground

3600 Observatory Ave, Cincinnati

One of Cincinnati’s best-kept secrets, this East side gem features separate playgrounds for little (ages 2-5) and big (ages 5-12) kids, ensuring fun for the whole family! Picnic tables and walking trails make Ault Park Playground the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon.

5 PLACES TO BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy wideopen spaces, but when the temps start heating up, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered with some indoor spots that are packed with fun… and air conditioning!

6. Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark 1301 E Siebenthaler Ave, Dayton

This Dayton MetroPark has a Children’s Garden unrivaled by any other, featuring lots of sensory play areas, different animal habitats and even a learning garden where kids can get hands-on experience. We especially love the musical garden (which features large, outdoor musical instruments) and the sandbox (because what kid doesn’t love a sandbox?)

9.

Forest Field Park

2100 E. Centerville Station Rd., Dayton

Forest Field Park is an arboretum as well as a community park. It’s a great place for kids to burn off energy with tons of climbing obstacles. The playground got a fresh overhaul in 2018 and state-of-the-art play equipment sits adjacent to a natural play area.

7.

Patricia Allyn Park 7256 OH-48 Springboro

There is something for everyone at this park: multiple playgrounds (for big and little kids), soccer fields, sand volleyball court, tennis courts, walking trails 1-Mile paved walking loop, disc golf course (9 baskets with 18 different tee boxes), a pond with catch & release fishing allowed and much more!

8.

Activity Center Park

221 N. Main St., Centerville

The park includes an all-access playground area with wide ramps, large swings, belt swings, infant swings and benches that sway, allowing children of all abilities to play side by side. In the summer months, the sprayground, a zero-depth splash pad with fun features that spray and dump water, is the perfect place to cool off.

10. Russ Nature Reserve 2380 Kemp Rd., Dayton

Tucked away near the suburbs of Dayton, this is a true hidden gem! You won’t find metal slides or chain-link swings at this camouflaged nature playscape. There are no brightly colored monkey bars or jungle gyms. This play area is made almost entirely of natural elements — and it is the perfect place to let your kiddos imaginations run free. They’ll find obstacle courses, climbing walls, tunnels and wooden playhouses to explore. Dig in the sand, build your own structure or scale the tangled rope webs.

Wonderland Playground 8255 Beechmont Ave, Cincinnati wonderlandplayground.com

This place is straight out of a kid’s dream. Kids can climb the day away on a three-level, 3600-square-foot play structure complete with a giant four-person wave slide, donut slide, rainbow bridges, skybridge, lookouts and more. Or they can perfect their warrior skills in the three-lane ninja course. Younger children will enjoy the soft play area perfect for beginning explorers. There’s also a nursing room, a café and free wi-fi, so you can enjoy the time at Wonderland as much as your children do. American Sign Museum 1330 Monmouth Ave, Cincinnati americansignmuseum.org

The American Sign Museum is an under-the-radar museum that’s as accessible to kids as it is to adults. Kids will love the spinning signs, flashing lights and pop culture imagery. Definitely schedule your visit around one of the Museum’s daily tours; you’ll learn so much about the history of this awesome art medium.

June 2021 I

Cincinnati Museum Center 1301 Western Ave, Cincinnati cincymuseum.org

This one-of-a-kind, multimuseum complex housed in historic Union Terminal, is packed with fun, including the Museum of Natural History & Science, the Robert D. Lindner Family OMNIMAX® Theater, and the kid-favorite, The Children's Museum, which is set to re-open July 1!

Boohshoft Museum of Discovery 2600 DeWeese Pkwy, Dayton boonshoftmuseum.org

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton is more than a museum of science and natural history, it’s also a zoo, aquarium and planetarium. You’ll find all the answers to your kids’ biggest questions at Boonshoft.

Entertrainment Junction 7379 Squire Court, West Chester entertrainmentjunction.com

Entertrainment Junction is always a hit for railroad enthusiasts young and old: it’s 25,000 square feet of model trains (that’s half a football field!), and includes over 2 miles of track, 90 G-scale locomotives and 1,000 cars. There’s also a kids’ play area, railroad museum, Expo Center and approximately 1,346 train tables.
