Sweet Days of Summer Ah, summer. The days are long, but the season always feels short. Summer lasts for approximately 93 days, which sounds like a long time, doesn’t it? But somewhere around June, I look around and realize that I’m smack-dab in the middle of summer and there are still many hot-weather activities on my to-do list. So much summer fun, so little time.

There are so many ideas for summer fun around Indy that we couldn’t fit them all in this issue. So you’ll definitely want to check out our website for even more ideas. HomeRoom If you’ve walked around the pockets of shops off the Monon Trail at 54th Street in south Broad Ripple, you may have noticed a door with an eyecatching mural of scissors. Beyond that door is where owner Shelly Leer offers HomeRoom, a creative DIY modern maker space. HomeRoom empowers guests to move beyond their fears by teaching them how to design, repair, and create useful and meaningful objects for themselves, friends, family and the community. Don’t expect the run-of-the-mill paper, glue sticks and glitter crafts. Instead, think drills, hammers, handsaws — and even sewing machines. Kids 7 and older get to try these “scary” things, all under the adult supervision of Leer and her team. Leer is an experienced expert and educator, and a contributor to Real Simple, Bob Vila online, Country Living, Apartmenttherapy. com, and the Indianapolis Star. She’s also taught sewing classes at The Indianapolis Art Center, as well as at a local shelter for abused women and kids.

Leer offers private and custom workshops, summer camps, parties and in-studio rentals. Recent classes have included beginning sewing and textile arts, maker birthday parties, and upholstery for adults. Kid classes have been fondly called meditative and calming “junk drawer” parties. Kids creatively use items such as grommet rings, earrings, fabric swatches, necklaces, charms, bells, vintage hardware, scrap metal conduit —even chop-sawed parquet f loor tiles. Parents enjoy the classes, as each experience integrates STEAM curricula. Kids are so busy having fun that they don’t even know they are learning valuable and practical skills. Few shows air long enough for parents and children to have the same experiences and warm memories. This makes SCOOBYDOO™ special and a great intergenerational way to bond with one another. Ingredients: 1 cup room temperature unsalted butter 2/3 cup granulated sugar 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla Sprinkles, of course!

Steps: 1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and line baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Mix the butter and 2/3 cups of sugar using a hand mixer. Slowly add flour and vanilla. 3. Have the kiddos roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place on the baking sheet, and gently flatten the cookie balls. 4. Add sprinkles, like Shaggy would! 5. Have mom and dad put the cookies in the oven, and let them bake for 14-16 minutes. Let cookies cool for at least 10 minutes — this allows the cookies to finish baking. 6. Enjoy, and get ready to help the gang solve the mystery!

Being Prepared for Summertime Injuries Stay safe this season with these common-sense precautions.

· Use insect repellant to limit mosquito bites and repel ticks, and wear long sleeves and pants if the weather permits.

Summer is typically a joyous time full of things to celebrate. The season brings with it lots of time outdoors, cookouts, and participating in sports or other physical activities. But the downside of summer is the increased risk of injury. Learning about summer injury prevention will help keep you and your family safe this season. “Families can enjoy all that summer has to offer while staying safe by taking easy, practical steps to limit accidents and environmental exposures,” says Sean Thompson, medical director of pediatric medicine at Riley Children’s Health at IU Health North. “Our team in the emergency department is happy to take care of any child who needs us, but ultimately, we hope for every child to have an injury-free, fun summer!”

Preventing the Top Childhood Summertime Injuries Thompson says that one of the top ways that children injure themselves during the summer is due to that Fourth of July favorite: fireworks. “Some of the most serious injuries we see are burns or eye injuries related to fireworks,” Thompson says.

· Check hair and skin for ticks after being in the woods, high grasses or bushes. · Apply sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours or after being in the water. If possible, dress children in UPF clothing. · Have your child wear a hat when outdoors in the sun. He suggests enjoying public firework displays, rather than using fireworks at home. “If you do your own fireworks, only adults should be using fireworks and they should not be accessible by children,” Thompson says.

Playground visits happen more often during the summer, too. Thompson suggests that good supervision and ensuring playground equipment is safe and used correctly will prevent most serious playground injuries.

Swimming and water-related accidents also rank as one of the top ways that kids can find themselves in the emergency department during the summer.

And no matter the season: Be sure your child is wearing protective gear when riding bicycles, scooters, skateboards or anything with wheels. “The highest priority is a helmet,” Thompson says. “Protect their brains. Helmets work!”

“Water provides so much enjoyment but requires constant vigilance,” Thompson says. “Avoid distraction and maintain close supervision when your child is in or around water. Provide ‘touch supervision’: any child under 5 should be within an arm’s reach of an adult. Young children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water.”

More Summertime Safety Tips Summertime means more time in the sun, more encounters with insects and more exposure to the elements. What are some ways that parents can protect their children from non-accident-related summertime woes? Thompson offers these tips:

· Never leave a child in a car by themselves for ANY amount of time. · Offer water every 20 minutes while outside. · Provide frequent breaks in the shade.
