WE LOVE SEEING YOUR PHOTOS OF LOCAL KIDS LIVING THEIR BEST LIVES AROUND INDY! HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVORITE SUBMISSIONS WE RECEIVED THIS MONTH.
h, June! This is the month of summer break that I love the most — the month where the possibilities seem endless. There’s a whole summer in front of us, with lots of adventures to be had.
This is also the month where the young people who live in my house start informing me, “I’m bored.” All day, every day. Sure, I’ve lined up a few camps for my kids this summer. But we don’t have a camp scheduled every day. So that means these long summer days will need to be filled with activities to fend off the “I’m bored” chorus.
Thankfully, it won’t be difficult at all to find fun all around town this summer. Indianapolis is bursting at the seams with entertainment during the summer, and we’ve collected some of the best ideas for a spectacular season in our Summer Fun Guide, starting on page 28, and our Calendar of Events, starting on page 46. From ice cream hot-spots to perfect places to paddle, we have tons of ideas for planning a delightful summer. Let this issue be your antidote to the “I’m bored” blues!
Have an epic summer!

Summertime means more time on the playground! Indy has an incredible number of awesome outdoor spaces for kids of all ages and abilities to play, so there’s no shortage of fun in our area. Our Ultimate Guide To Indianapolis-Area Playgrounds, sponsored by Franciscan Health, has simplified the process for parents to discover an ideal location to play the day away. We’ve broken down the options by county, and even have special sections for mud-free playgrounds, inclusive playgrounds, playgrounds located outside of Indy that are worth the drive, and indoor playgrounds for a rainy day.
Find them all at indyschild.com/playgrounds-indianapolis
If you’re looking to beat the heat this summer, we have a cool idea. Use our “ICE CREAM MAP” on page 22 to guide you to some of the best ice cream shops around Indy. From cups to cones and shakes to sundaes, you’ll find lots of places to stay cool and satisfy your sweet tooth. How many places can you visit this summer?
Even More Coolness:
We were excited to find our kids’ favorite ice cream flavor — “super man”— now comes on a stick! You can find these new Hudsonville Super Scoop ice cream bars in major grocery retailers throughout the Midwest.
One of the first Father’s Day cards dates back roughly 4,000 years. Elmesu, a Babylonian child, carved a card out of clay to “wish his father good health and long life.”

hysical activity can give your little one a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment as their skills improve and they meet milestones they might not have realized they could accomplish. Regular exercise can even reduce the risk of obesity and related health issues. Doctors say the root of many metabolic diseases like high blood pressure, cholesterol deposits in the arteries, and even type 2 diabetes can begin in childhood.
“Some benefits of physical activity for children include improved cardiovascular fitness [heart and lungs], stronger bones and muscles, better sleep, reduced levels of depression and anxiety, increased self-esteem and improved concentration,” says Dr. Shannon Dillon, primary care physician at Riley Children’s Health. “Research shows that regular physical activity throughout childhood and adulthood can also help reduce the risk of developing certain cancers, including colon, breast, endometrial, kidney, bladder, esophagus and stomach cancer.”
Here are Dr. Dillon’s recommendations for each age range:
Babies benefit from plenty of time on the floor to practice rolling, then sitting, then crawling and pulling to stand. As they begin walking, parents can begin having them explore more places, such as parks, the zoo, or The Children’s Museum (and the outdoor sports park)!
Toddlers will often closely observe and mimic the actions of parents, so finding activities that both parents and kids can be involved in is important. Something as simple as walking the dog together or putting on some music and having a dance party can be beneficial.
Getting elementary-aged children involved in organized sports or other activities, such as dance classes, can be a wonderful way for kids to learn new skills, practice teamwork and burn off energy. Activities don’t have to be structured to be considered exercise: jumping rope, playing tag with friends, or shooting some hoops together in the backyard can be great low stress ways to get in some activity!
The more you can incorporate games and mini challenges for the whole family, the more fun you are likely to have and the more likely it is for your child to embrace exercise over time.

The benefits of regular exercise go well beyond physical health, according to Elyse Handel, early childhood education manager at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “When children engage in sports and physical activity at an early age, it supports their physical and motor skill development and strengthens their own identities and sense of self,” she says. “Children who play sports also develop a better understanding and appreciation for community and collaboration. They see themselves as a part of a team and understand how teamwork and sportsmanship are important skills used to reach or accomplish a goal.”
Here are some fun activities in Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience that happen daily this summer (weather permitting) and are recommended for ages 6 and older:
Hammerin’ Hank Homerun Challenge: Discover the inspirational story behind Hank Aaron’s home run record. Step up to bat in this fun homerun themed challenge to see if you have what it takes to be the next Hammerin’ Hank!
Mighty Muscle Movers: Put your agility, balance, coordination and speed to the test as you learn new exercises and test yourself in our mini games.
Tamika Catchings Legendary Challenge: Challenge your family in a fun basketball challenge while discovering the inspirational story of Indiana Fever legend, Tamika Catchings. Practice basketball fundamentals and participate in a fun game shooting baskets and perfecting your jump shot!
Barbara Wynne Tennis Challenge: Be inspired by the story of local tennis teacher (and founder of Indy’s Child!) Barbara Wynne, while working on your forehand and participating in some fun drills and games.
Check with coaches on site to learn how to adapt these programs to be inclusive of younger guests who want to participate in programs. Littles just may need more adult support but are still encouraged to play with their families.

Father’s Day is this month, so it’s the perfect time to celebrate our dads! But you don’t have to spend lots of money on physical gifts. (Does dad really need another pair of socks?) Instead, plan a day doing what dad loves best, and splurge on quality time with him. Here are some fun ideas to make this Father's Day one for the books!
For golfing dads, spending a day on the green is pure bliss. But there are other ways to enjoy golf that the whole family can enjoy. Golf entertainment complexes like Topgolf in Fishers and Back 9 Golf and Entertainment are perfect for all ages — no experience necessary. Plus, both of these driving ranges offer great food and drink, so you can make a whole afternoon out of it. Or hit balls down a simulated golf course at X-Golf, with locations in Carmel, Noblesville and Plainfield.
It’s dad’s day off, so let him sit back and relax in a luxury movie theater. Living Room Theatres at the Bottleworks District has cozy, living-room-style theaters, with food and drink available at the in-house restaurant. Flix Brewhouse in Carmel is a great place to catch the latest flick and a meal, plus they serve you food and drinks right to your seat. Or watch a movie at the state’s largest screen at the IMAX Theatre in the Indiana State Museum
The theater’s stadium seating and surround sound is a completely immersive experience.
like the Stutz Bearcat and Black Hawk, alongside Indianapolis automotive history. If fast cars are more dad’s speed, he might like a tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track, which will give him a behind-the-scenes look at the world’s most famous racecourse. No car-centric day would be complete without visiting Ford’s Garage in Noblesville, a 1920s service station-themed eatery featuring vintage Ford vehicles, gas pumps and fixtures.
A little-known hidden gem for car lovers is The Stutz Car Museum, free and open to the public on select days: Thursdays and Fridays from 4-8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.6 p.m. This boutique car museum showcases rare classic cars,
Dads just wanna have fun — and sometimes throw things at a wall. Luckily, axe-throwing is hot right now, and you can find it at several places around town, including Bad Axe Throwing in downtown Indy, Ragnarok Axe Throwing and Anarchy Axe Throwing in Castleton, and Flying Squirrel Axe Throwing in Speedway. Or visit The Fowling Warehouse, where dad can go bowling with footballs. (Pro tip: Family Day is every Sunday from 12-6 p.m.!) Or do some traditional bowling at Pinheads in Fishers and Punch Bowl Social downtown. Does dad like video games more than IRL games? Then Boss Battle Games at the Castleton Square Mall might be just the thing, where you can play all the retro arcade games you want for one flat fee.
Take dad to new heights with a zip line experience at Koteewi Aerial Adventure, located at Strawtown Koteewi in Noblesville. Afterward, explore the park and visit the American Indian village and structures at The Taylor Center of Natural History. Eagle Creek Park is another great area for walking and exploring, as well as zip lining at Go Ape Zipline & Adventure Park For a more leisurely outdoor experience, rent some bikes and cruise along the Monon Trail, White River Trail, or the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. For an all-in-one park experience, visit Fort Harrison State Park, which offers a range of recreational activities, including hiking, fishing, biking and golfing.
Father's Day is the perfect occasion to make your dad feel special and appreciated. Whether you choose one of these activities or combine them to create a full day of celebration, spending quality time with dad is the best gift of all!

A Geist hidden gem — and the ultimate family destination. There are 22 acres of vines in their front yard and plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the view. The winery also hosts many weekly events such as concerts, line dancing lessons, and karaoke nights. 9061 N 700 W, McCordsville
Sometimes, parents just need a great restaurant with great food and drinks, where their children can play close by. That's Field Brewing in a nutshell. This Westfield brewery has an amazing garden and outdoor patio seating, with an area where visitors can play bocce ball, giant Jenga, and just hang out on the artificial turf. 303 E Main Street, Westfield
Car lovers will get a kick out of Ford's Garage, a decked out restaurant with Ford car parts and memorabilia. There are even real cars inside the restaurant! After your meal, walk outside of the restaurant and make a right, and you'll see an outdoor play area for kids, which is part of the Hamilton Town Center outdoor shopping mall. 13193 Levinson Lane, Noblesville

Not only does this Broad Ripple restaurant serve up some of the best barbecue in Indianapolis, but there is a large outdoor seating area that is open, casual, and family-friendly. You can even play a game of cornhole while you're waiting for your food! And don't forget to get dessert after your meal, as Half Liter serves two kid favorite: Dippin' Dots and Rice Krispie Treats! 5301 Winthrop Ave., Indianapolis
The only Lou Malnati's in Indy with a dine-in eatery, this Chicago-based deep-dish pizza restaurant also has a large outdoor patio overlooking the Broad Ripple Canal. Lou's features an extensive kids menu and a fun circus theme throughout the restaurant — including fun wacky mirrors that make you feel like you're in a fun house! 6320 Ferguson St., Indianapolis
This Westfield winery and brewery is a great place to enjoy local wine, beer, live music and light fare, like charcuterie, appetizers and salads, plus pizza and brunch on weekends. Grownups can enjoy their adult beverages outdoors on the patio overlooking the vineyard, while kids can enjoy the playground close by. 303 E. 161st St., Westfield
Traders Point Creamery is a working dairy farm that offers local ingredients at their farmto-table restaurant. From April through October, visitors can take a self-guided tour of the farm property and visit with some of the Traders Point Creamery cows, chickens and other animals that call the Zionsville farm their home. And for dessert, kids will especially love that there's a Dairy Bar on site, where you can order freshly made ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes and floats, which you can enjoy inside the restaurant or outdoors on the big patio. 9101 Moore Road, Zionsville
This hot chicken restaurant from Oakland, California, is known for its mouth-watering hot chicken and family-friendly atmosphere, with locations in Fountain Square and Carmel. On warm days, the patio at the Carmel location is the place to be, as there’s lots of seating set amidst a huge graffiti mural. Inside, The restaurant offers free vintage video games in the back, including classics like a PlayStation and an old-school arcade game. Pro tip: Visit on Tuesdays, when kids eat free with each adult meal. 4335 W 106th St., Carmel

WORDS BY NICOLE SIPEummer is a great time to relax, have fun, and try to make as many memories as possible during these short months. For parents of kids with special needs, finding inclusive and engaging activities for their little ones is easy in Indy, because there are lots of summer activities around town for kids of all abilities. Here are some that we’ve found!
Indy is home to a number of accessible parks and playgrounds, where kids with special needs can explore, play and enjoy the great outdoors. Shawn Grove Park in the Old Northside is great for children ages 5 and under who love to run because it is completely fenced in.
Westermeier Commons Playground in Carmel offers fun for all ages and abilities — including two specific areas for children ages 2-5 and 5-12. Independence Park in Greenwood has an allaccessible playground with rubberized surface, a wheelchair-accessible trail and basketball court, and a sensory area designed with autistic children in mind. And Brooks School Park in Fishers features a sensory play area with drums, chimes, bells, xylophones, activity boards and a rubberized surface. For even more accessible playgrounds, visit indyschild.com/inclusive-accessible-playgrounds-indianapolis
Swimming and playing in the water is an iconic summer activity. Many swimming pools and water parks in Indianapolis provide accessibility features for children with special needs, ensuring that every child can cool off and have fun in the water. Indy Island Aquatic Center at Raymond Park is equipped with a ramp entry for wheelchairs and a zero-depth entry area. The Waterpark at the Monon Community Center in Carmel has water wheelchairs that guests can use to enter the pool and enjoy the water features. The ADA-accessible Murphy Aquatic Park in Avon also provides water wheelchairs, as well as play features that were adapted to ADA code.
For free water fun, you can’t beat a splash pad. Indy has lotsof splash pad options for kids of all abilities. The splash pads at Tarkington Park and Holliday Park are great for toddlers or kids who like to control their sensory experience, because the water features bubble up gently from the ground instead of splash overhead. Williams Park in Brownsburg has a large splash pad with lots of room to roam. And the splash pad at Dan Wakefield Park in Broad Ripple is great when you’re looking for a low-key splash pad
— this little neighborhoodpark is a hidden gem and doesn’t get too much traffic.
Going to the movies is a classic summer activity, and many local theaters in Indy offer sensory-friendly screenings for folks with special needs. Check out AMC's Sensory Friendly Films, where the volume is turned down, the lights are slightly dimmed, and there are no previews or advertisements to overwhelm young movie-goers. Regal Theatre’s My Way Matinee invites everyone to experience a movie with the lights turned up and the volume turned down. In Noblesville, Emagine’s Sensory-friendly Movie Program allows audience interaction, such as moving, speaking and singing, and electronic device usage is allowed. This is just a small sampling of all of the fun out there in Indy. Go out and have a great summer!
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis features five floors of educational fun for all ages! Outside, the 7.5-acre Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience encourages movement with interactive exhibits that let visitors play a variety of sports. Visit the museum's website to learn more.

n the mood for chewy mochi doughnuts, Korean-style hot dogs and boba beverages? You’ll find all three at Mochinut, a chain restaurant that specializes in Korean-style snacks.
These Korean rice hot dogs are a popular street food trend, and can be customized to your liking! First, pick your topping, which can include dried ramen, hot Cheetos, potato or sweet potato. Next, choose your filling: a beef hot dog, mozzarella, or half hot dog and half mozzarella. You can also choose to make it a “Hot Mess” by adding cilantro, corn, Fritos, onion and the house specialty YumYum sauce.
The mochi donuts are a combination of a traditional Japanese mochi and a fluffy donut. The result is a unique, pillowy-soft texture on the outside, while the inside offers a chewy, stretchy texture unlike a regular yeast or cake donut. Mochi donuts are made with rice flour, and have a distinct shape of eight small balls connected as a circle. The flavors at Mochinut change
frequently, but you can find donut flavors like New York cheesecake, strawberry churro, pb&j, honey lavender and lots more.
You’ll also find Mochinut Creamballs, which are like donut holes, but filled with delicious cream!
Mochinut offers boba beverages, including brown sugar, coffee latte, matcha, milk tea, ube, and fruit-forward drinks like cherry berry, orange grapefruit and peach mango. You can get all drinks with or without boba.

Back in 1998, long-time Doctor Who fan Keith Bradbury had a problem — it was very difficult to find Doctor Who merchandise in the United States. Doctor Who is a British science fiction television series, making it difficult to find merchandise and memorabilia in the States.
So, Bradbury took matters into his own hands and founded Who North America, a shop filled with reasonably priced Doctor Who products. The shop, located in Camby, Indiana, is one of the largest sources of Doctor Who products in North America, including collectibles, accessories, posters, calendars, miniatures, action figures, toys, games and more.
Doctor Who launched its first episode back on November 23, 1963, and started to gain a following of United States fans in the 70s. The show originally ran from 1963 to 1989, and was then re-launched in 2005.
In addition to Doctor Who, Who North America sells merchandise for The Avengers, Dark Shadows, Dorian Gray,
The
Aside from their shop, which ships across the country, Who North America has The Museum of Merchandise, which features products from the shows beginning all the way up to present day.
As for The Museum of Merchandise, it has 50 years worth of Doctor Who products that have rarely been seen by United States-based fans. The museum is free to those who visit the shop.
Museum visitors can expect to see a full-size “Lady Cassandra” overhead and the biggest Dalek cookie jar in America. Additionally, Who North America has a game and arcade room, featuring a Doctor Who pinball machine and Voyager arcade game, both of which are free to play.
