LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Summertime Spirit

h, June! This is the month of summer break that I love the most — the month where the possibilities seem endless. There’s a whole summer in front of us, with lots of adventures to be had.

This is also the month where the young people who live in my house start informing me, “I’m bored.” All day, every day. Sure, I’ve lined up a few camps for my kids this summer. But we don’t have a camp scheduled every day. So that means these long summer days will need to be filled with activities to fend off the “I’m bored” chorus.

Thankfully, it won’t be difficult at all to find fun all around town this summer. Indianapolis is bursting at the seams with entertainment during the summer, and we’ve collected some of the best ideas for a spectacular season in our Summer Fun Guide, starting on page 25, and our Calendar of Events, starting on page 38. From ice cream hot-spots to perfect places to paddle, we have tons of ideas for planning a delightful summer. Let this issue be your antidote to the “I’m bored” blues!

Have an epic summer!

Destination: Ice Cream!

If you’re looking to beat the heat this summer, we have a cool idea. Use our “ICE CREAM MAP” on page 14 to guide you to some of the best ice cream shops around southwest Ohio. From cups to cones and shakes to sundaes, you’ll find lots of places to stay cool and satisfy your sweet tooth. How many places can you visit this summer?

Even More Coolness:

We were excited to find our kids’ favorite ice cream flavor — “super man”— now comes on a stick! You can find these new Hudsonville Super Scoop ice cream bars in major grocery retailers throughout the Midwest.

One of the first Father’s Day cards dates back roughly 4,000 years. Elmesu, a Babylonian child, carved a card out of clay to “wish his father good health and long life.”

You to the Rescue

ehoming is the theme of You to the Rescue. This upscale resale boutique offers a place for your gently used items to find a new home, including clothing, accessories and home goods. The bonus is that You to the Rescue is a nonprofit helping animals to find new homes by contributing up to 70% of its profit to two local rescue organizations — the Animal Adoption Foundation (aafpets.org) in Hamilton, and Save the Animals Foundation (staf.org) in Cincinnati. Each sale counts toward what You to the Rescue can contribute.

Rescue Inspiration

You to the Rescue was started by Amy Miller, a local speech-based therapist. She spent 20 years helping others to communicate but found her passion in her pets. It started with Manny, a Great Dane puppy she purchased from a breeder. Manny soon needed a friend, and Amy turned to a local rescue organization where she found Dirk. The experience of rehabilitating a traumatized Great Dane changed her life and became the impetus for her

work in helping animals. Her mission is to help those without a voice: local cats and dogs.

If shopping’s not your thing, You to the Rescue offers an online donation portal directly to local rescues so you can “paws it forward” to local no-kill shelters.

Great Outdoor Patios

Enjoy the summer weather by dining outside with your family.

It's patio season, which means taking advantage of these long days and warm nights by dining outdoors. Here's a round-up of some family-friendly, must-try restaurants that feature great outdoor dining.

FIFTY WEST

Pack your beach bag, we are heading to Fifty West! Burgers, tenders, shakes and secret fry sauce may keep bellies full, but the sandy picnic table areas make our kiddos the happiest. Beach shovels are encouraged as little ones can kick off their shoes and play in the sand while slurping up a delicious shake. Conveniently on the bike trail of the Little Miami River, finish up your meal with a ride over to Bass Island for skipping rocks. 7605 Wooster Pike, Cincinnati

FIRESIDE PIZZA

When the tall sliding door opens up at Cincinnati’s oldest standing firehouse, you know it’s sweet summertime. With gluten-free options available, Fireside Pizza is home to authentic woodfired pies. A bookshelf of activities and coloring contests make this a perfect dinner spot before a trip to the nearby Eden Park playground. 773 E McMillan St., Cincinnati

JIMMIE’S LADDER 11

For your aspiring firefighter, Jimmie’s Ladder 11 makes dreams come true. Authentic firehouse memorabilia fills the walls of the highly rated burger, pizza and wing joint with a beautifully landscaped covered patio. Buttered noodles and chicken fill up our pickiest young eaters. 936 Brown St., Dayton

LITTLE MIAMI BREWING COMPANY

A family-friendly brewpub overlooking the Little Miami River, Little Miami Brewing Company serves brick oven pizza, salads and appetizers that will please the whole family. The outdoor patio has communal picnic tables and a whole cart of board games to keep the kids entertained, as well as a lineup of live music. 208 Mill St., Milford

LOCAL POST

Settled into a historic post office building, Local Post is a short half mile drive from Lunken Airport’s viewing area, a favorite amongst aviation-loving kids. Whether you’re indulging in Post Fries or an (absolutely amazing) Emerson salad, kids eat free pizza on Mondays with an adult meal! The pet-friendly patio is a perfect spot for the entire family, fur babies included. 3923 Eastern Ave., Cincinnati

PUTZ’S CREAMY WHIP

Under the tall shade trees of Putz’s Creamy Whip, cool down with a Westwood-famous chocolate soda and Queen City Sausage chili cheese footlong. The Kings Island-esque blue ice cream is a family favorite. 2673 Putz Pl., Cincinnati

RITA’S OF KETTERING

Rita’s Italian ice gelati is a hidden gem for Swedish fish-loving kiddos! Layers of Italian ice and creamy custard paired with delicious flavors like dragon fruit, pear, key lime and s’mores. Rita’s is a light yet filling dessert under the red and white striped umbrellas. 3371 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering

SUGAR N’ SPICE DINER

Nostalgia meets summertime with pops of pastel at Cincy’s most colorful diner. Whisk your cares away with an immediate serotonin boost from tasty, wispy thin pancakes and a family-friendly atmosphere. Everyone goes home with their choice of rubber ducky. For a kiddo, outdoor dining doesn’t get any better than that. 1203 Sycamore St., Cincinnati

SENATE

Steps away from Summit Park’s impressive playground, Senate’s gourmet hot dogs and location keep us coming back for more. Blue Ash’s Summit Park is a hotspot for flying kites, dabbling into the water nature scape and spending time with family. Burn off that extra energy and replenish with Senate’s delicious duck fat fries, hot dogs and famous poutine. Senate is located in Summit Park and is our featured photo! 1100 Summit Ave A, Blue Ash

SUNRISE CAFE

We love the true village feel of Yellow Springs with great hiking, boutique shops, fresh coffee and beautiful courtyard patios perfect for outdoor dining. Known for their breakfast, Sunrise Cafe keeps it local and from scratch. The impressive kids menu offers healthy options like veggie burgers, grilled

chicken and organic macaroni and cheese. 259 Xenia Ave., Yellow Springs

Dad's Day Out

Father’s Day experiences for the dads (and dad-figures) in your life.

Father’s Day is this month, so it’s the perfect time to celebrate our dads! But you don’t have to spend lots of money on physical gifts. (Does dad really need another pair of socks?) Instead, plan a day doing what dad loves best, and splurge on quality time with him. Here are some fun ideas to make this Father's Day one for the books!

For the Outdoorsman

From Hueston Woods to East Fork Lake, the entire region is packed full of great fishing spots, woodsy campgrounds, hiking trails, and a brand new Bass Pro Shop off I-75 in West Chester. Whether dad is looking for a new Browning rod and reel or upgrading the family camping tent, a trip to Bass Pro is always a great place to start.

Take your gear to Great Parks or Five Rivers MetroParks and enjoy a day of kayaking on the calm waters of Winton Lake or horseback riding at Carriage Hill Riding Center. Both park systems offer camping at different locations and sometimes include fun perks like free wifi, splash pads, pizza delivery and naturalist events.

For the Sports Fanatic

Whether dad likes to play them or watch them, Southwest Ohio has leagues of all shapes and sizes. For the baseball fan, the Dayton Dragons will be in town on Father’s Day for an afternoon game at Day Air Ballpark. FC Cincinnati and the Reds will be on the road but you can catch a game on the big screen at Newport’s Bridgeview Box Park

Break a sweat with dad at The Pickleball Lodge or Aces Pickleball in Norwood’s Factory 52 Take it easy with a few swings at Top Golf ’s high-tech driving range or play a nine-hole round at Meadow Links Father Child Classic. Sign up dad for Gem City Social Sports in Dayton where the community is building friendships of all skill levels in various athletic leagues across the city (mom can come, too!).

For the Artsy Bookworm

The Contemporary Arts Center and The Contemporary Dayton supports art and wellness in their stunning showcases. Take a stroll through one of Southwest Ohio’s prized museums before a trip to Bookery Cincy or Bonnett’s Book Store to dive further into knowledge. The Joseph-Beth Book Club is a great gift for dad to find the best selection and receive a 20% discount on future purchases.

For the Foodie

There’s no better place than a fresh market to visit on a summer day with a foodie dad. Both 2nd Street Market and Findlay Market feature local growers, bakers, and artisans like the award-winning Blue Oven Bakery. On 2nd Street in Dayton, enjoy a special Sunset at the Market only held twice this summer.

Dine with dad on a special brunch or dinner cruise on BB Riverboats or encourage him to throw back a few at Mother Stewart’s Brewing Company The brewery is hosting an epic Bourbon, BBQ, Brews, & Blues Festival on Father’s Day with bourbon pours and food trucks.

For the Car Guy

Take dad to the races! At Moler Raceway Park in Williamsburg, dad can get a glimpse of life in the fast lane at the Impact RaceGear 40 Super Late Models race. The race track is cash only, so come prepared! If dad has a need for speed himself, Full Throttle Adrenaline Park puts him behind the wheel of high-speed go karting, axe throwing, virtual reality, and an indoor paintball field.

Father's Day is the perfect occasion to make your dad feel special and appreciated. Whether you choose one of these activities or combine them to create a full day of celebration, spending quality time with dad is the best gift of all!

Snapology of West Chester

At Snapology, we understand that children are meant to learn through play. When children are actively engaged in hands-on, interactive learning activities, their creativity flourishes and they show a greater interest in school. Snapology helps your child develop a thirst for knowledge by engaging children ages 3-14 using LEGO® bricks, K’Nex and technology. While the kids are having fun, we sneak in the educational concepts. In most cases, kids don’t realize how much they are learning!

The Columbus Zoo is huge; in each direction you’ll experience different habitats and species, all designed to be interactive and accessible. The polar bears, for example, could be seen both above ground and below; to access the below-ground viewing area, you’ll follow a mining-style path with signage about the bears’ habitat and how to protect this species from environmental and human threats. And of course, once you’re down there, you’re treated to a frontrow view of the bears happily diving and swimming in the water.
