Make Way for Ducklings Make Way for Ducklings is the story of how Mrs. Mallard and Jack, Kack, Lack, Nack, Ouack, Pack and Quack navigate through the busy streets of Boston to safely arrive at their new home. This summer, the book’s author and illustrator Robert McCloskey is celebrated at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Make Way for Ducklings: The Art of Robert McCloskey features over 100 original artworks and materials from the beloved author/illustrator (and Hamilton, Ohio native), plus fun memorabilia for fans of his other childhood classics, such as Blueberries for Sal and Time of Wonder. This endearing exhibit is organized by The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and opens July 20th. Hit the (donut) trail! The most delicious journey your family will travel this summer is just north of Cincinnati. Who says $1 can’t buy anything? On July 18th, get into the world-renowned Cincinnati Zoo for just a buck as part of the Macy’s Kids, Cultures, Critters and Crafts Festival. Come for a day full of fun at the Zoo: live music, parades, entertainment, special animal encounters and tons of kid-friendly activities (in other words… kids, cultures, critters and crafts!) Let’s Go Underground Keep cool in a cave this summer If you’re looking for a new family adventure this summer, why not head underground? The Midwest is home to a number of intricate cave networks where kids and adults can get up close and personal with the wonders of the underground world – from rock formations to waterfalls, blind cave fish to Ice Age bones. The best part? These caves stay a cool 54 degrees year-round on average, making them the perfect place to cool off when the temperatures soar. Below are just a few of our favorites.
OHIO CAVERNS Location: 2210 East State Route 245, West Liberty, OH Blue, orange, white, red and black – these are the colors you’ll find in Ohio Caverns, known for its variety of hues in various formations and features. The caverns are the largest in the state, with over two miles of passageways running in depth from 30 feet to 103 feet. Be sure to see the "Crystal King” while you’re there – a huge, perfectly formed white stalactite estimated to be over 200,000 years old. Visit www.ohiocaverns.com for more details. OLENTANGY INDIAN CAVERNS Location: 1779 Home Rd Delaware, OH Want to get an even “cavier” experience in a cave? Explore it by flashlight! Olentangy Indian Caverns offers Flashlight Tours where the main lights are turned off and guests use only the glow of their flashlight to see the cave. Check out the 50,000

SENECA CAVERNS Location: 15248 E. Township Road 178, Bellevue, OH Seneca Caverns was discovered by two boys in 1872 who were chasing their dog when he suddenly disappeared into a sink hole. Today visitors can see a series of rooms and passageways on their tour as well as "Ole Mist’ry River,” a crystal clear flowing stream 110 feet below the surface which is part of the vast underlying water system in the region. Pan for gemstones, crystals, arrowheads and fossils in their sluice while you’re there, too. Check out www.senecacavernsohio.com to get the full scoop.
SQUIRE BOONE CAVERNS Location: 100 Squire Boone Rd, Mauckport, IN As the story goes, Squire Boone and his brother Daniel discovered these caverns in 1790. Today, families can walk in Boone’s footsteps, passing stalactites and stalagmites, rushing streams and underground waterfalls. And this year, for the first time since opening to the public in 1973, Squire Boone had unveiled a new tour through this wondrous cave. Guided 1-hour tours leave every 30 to 40 minutes. MARENGO CAVE Location: 400 East State Road 64, Marengo, IN This U.S. National Landmark is definitely one to add to the bucket list. Marengo Cave offers easy walking tours that will amaze adults and children alike. The Dripstone Trail tour is 1 mile and lasts 60 minutes. The Crystal Palace tour is 1/3 mile and lasts 40 minutes. Both are guided and are offered yearround. Kids will get a kick out of The Crawl – a winding maze that allows little ones to get a feel for what cave exploration is like without all the water and mud. Visit www. marengocave.com for more info.
INDIANA CAVERNS Location: 1267 Green Acres Drive SW, Corydon, IN Explore Indiana’s longest cave. Families will enjoy the Panoramic Views Tour. During this 1 ½ hour tour, you’ll descend 110 feet underground, enjoy a 25-minute boat ride on the underground river and learn about the
rich history of Indiana Caverns, all while taking in breathtaking underground views. Above ground, kids can take part in Gem Stone Mining and explore “The Cavern of The Sabertooth,” a crawling adventure where kids set out in search of the Sabertooth Lair. MAMMOTH CAVE Location: 1 Mammoth Cave Parkway, Mammoth Cave, KY Mammoth Cave is one of the largest in the world and is certainly worth the hike to Kentucky. This massive cave sprawls over 400 miles, with 16 different tours for all ages. If you are looking to make this more than a day trip, there are opportunities to enjoy surface hikes, canoeing on the Green River, picnicking, horseback riding, bicycling, camping and more. A common, and highly treatable, condition of childhood July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month, which shines a light on one of the most common birth defects today: facial clefts. This condition occurs in one of every 600 births in the United States. Clefts of the lip and palate (CLP) occur when these sections do not completely fuse during pregnancy. They can be complex conditions, affecting a child’s appearance, selfesteem and ability to breathe and eat properly. Though the cause of clefts is not completely clear, one major factor is smoking during pregnancy. About one in five babies born with CLP has a mother who smoked, according to the March of Dimes. A cleft lip can be repaired when the child reaches three to four months of age and 10 pounds. Cleft palates require the child to be slightly older, nine to 12 months of age. If not properly treated, issues related to hearing, speech and learning could occur. Treatment for CLP is not a “one and done” fix; the patient will need surgical and dental adjustments throughout childhood. Fortunately, with proper treatment, most children born with CLP thrive with little or no physical indication of the original defect. month, had CLP surgery at Cincinnati Shriners Hospital. Lola had two surgeries to repair her cleft lip and palate. She has a slight scar that is often unnoticed on her lip. Her treatment certainly has not stopped her from enjoying the beach and being a princess – two of her favorite activities. Local Spotlight: A Brush of Hope Using the power of art to help young girls
HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY BEST SUPPORT YOUR ORGANIZATION?
Creative expression has the ability to benefit us in many ways, not only as a source of enjoyment, but also in a therapeutic capacity. Aimee Lowrance understands this well; she is the founder of A Brush of Hope, a nonprofit organization in Lebanon dedicated to improving the lives of young girls through art. Cincinnati Parent spoke to Lowrance about the inspiration behind her organization and the kind of impact that artistic expression can have on young people.
YOU FOUNDED A BRUSH OF HOPE IN 2013. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START AN ART-BASED NON-PROFIT FOR GIRLS? That summer my 10-year-old daughter’s best friend broke her back in a gymnastic accident. She came and spent a few days at my house after she’d gotten her back brace on and we sat at the table and made art together. As she was doing art she would talk about how her summer was ruined because she couldn’t do anything, but then she’d go into these thoughts like oh my gosh, what if my back never heals? As we sat making art, she was working through these things in her mind, flip-flopping between 10-year-old thoughts about summer and more serious thoughts about if she would recover.

About a week later, I was on a morning run and I thought that I would really like to start a program where girls could use art to cope with some of the situations they are going through. I wanted to work with young girls who were struggling in many different areas and use art as a character builder and a coping mechanism and to help girls support and connect with their peers.
HOW DO THE GIRLS IN YOUR PROGRAM GET INVOLVED WITH A BRUSH OF HOPE? A lot of girls come to us recommended by guidance counselors or teachers and we reach them during the day in their schools. We go into schools around Montgomery, Butler and Warren Counties. We also get girls referred to us by pediatric counselors and they can come and do groups in our studio. There’s also word-of-mouth. Parents may have a daughter who is struggling to connect and make friends and they can register on our website and find a group that works for their daughter.
We always need women volunteers who would love to work with girls. We work with preschoolers all the way through high school and serve about 400 children over the school year. Our teachers are volunteers who commit to staying with a group of girls through the whole school year. The teachers provide a nurturing and safe environment for the girls and the girls realize they are important enough for someone to show up for every week. We also need women who are willing to work behind the scenes – whether it is social media or donation collection. Also, every organization can use monetary donations. If we don’t have them, we can’t stay in business.
WHY IS THE WORK YOU DO AT A BRUSH OF HOPE SO IMPORTANT? Most of us at A Brush of Hope have said at one time or another, “Wow, if we had had something like this to go to during those hard, formative years it would have made such a difference.” A lot of our girls thrive knowing that they have this group to go to where they can let their hair down and be themselves for a little while. We’ve seen introverted girls get involved in extracurricular activities, grades go up and family relationships get better. That’s why we keep doing it, because we see these results.

FROM THE KITCHEN TABLE TO A LAPTOP LOGGED IN FROM JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE, A GROWING NUMBER OF OHIO STUDENTS ARE REDEFINING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE IN THE CLASSROOM. Virtual schools and modern homeschooling cater to families looking for something different from the typical brick-andmortar classroom, often due to concerns over school safety, curriculum limitations and fitting in more family time. Here’s what you need to know about these alternative approaches to education.
ONLINE SCHOOL What is it? Online schools offer the option to complete classes wherever there’s an internet connection. Students interact with teachers and classmates via webcam, email and phone, and a parent serves as an at-home teacher during the younger grades.

Who attends? Virtual classes often appeal to students who are ahead or behind academically or those who’ve struggled with the social aspects of the traditional classroom. Because of the flexible schedule, online learning can also work for families who’d like to supplement with at-home religious education, as well as older students who are juggling jobs, childcare and/or demanding schedules, such as elite athletes. What’s the schedule like? Students studying online have greater control of their own schedules. Schoolwork can be completed any time of day, anywhere, and students can take longer with certain lessons or quickly progress through others without having to wait for classmates to catch up. At TRECA Digital Academy, a full-time online school for K-12 students statewide, students are required to work online five hours and 10 minutes per school day. The self-discipline it takes to commit to the schedule of online learning helps students well after graduation, advocates say. “The stronger demand for time-management and
digital literacy develops a significant skill that many of our graduates are able to take with them post-graduation,” says Jakie Lea, TRECA’s marketing coordinator. “Oftentimes, it helps sets them apart from students coming from a traditional brick-and-mortar setting.” The transition from a typical school schedule to an online learning environment can be an adjustment for some students, but schools have multiple staff members in place to help keep kids on track. “Anytime a student transitions to a new school, they’re going to have changes in rules, school culture and the way things are done,” says Kristin Stewart, head of school of Ohio Virtual Academy, a statewide K-12 online charter school. “The good thing is, we understand that we’re quite different. We’re building a partnership – parents, students and staff. We all have to work together for students to be successful.”

HOMESCHOOLING What is it? Homeschooling gives parents the opportunity to craft their child’s education at home, often with the assistance of purchased curriculums or co-ops of fellow homeschooling families. The at-home option has seen a resurgence in the last decade – between 1999 and 2012, the number of homeschooled children more than doubled, from 850,000 to 1.8 million, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The latest numbers show that about 3 percent of students ages 5 through 17 were reported as being homeschooled in 2016 – about 1.7 million students – but
that number is thought to be a low estimation, since many states don’t require homeschoolers be registered as such. Who’s homeschooled? Advocates tout homeschooling for its flexible schedule, personalized learning options and focus on family time. Requirements for homeschooling vary by state. In Ohio, families must provide 900 hours of instruction per year on specific subjects, including language, geography, math, science, health and music. The person providing the instruction must have a high school diploma or the equivalent, and they are required to notify the superintendent in the child’s home district of the family’s decision to homeschool, providing an assessment of the student’s work each year. Kentucky requires homeschooling families to provide a minimum of 1,062 hours of instruction in no less than 170 days on reading, writing, spelling, grammar, history, math, science and civics. Families are also required to notify the superintendent in the child’s home district of their intent to homeschool and to record each student’s progress in “all subjects taught at the same intervals as the local public schools.”
What’s the schedule like? Even more so than online schools, homeschool families are able to set their own schedules depending on their child’s age, interests and abilities. Many museums, libraries and parks offer programs specifically for homeschool families, and homeschool co-ops provide added structure and social outings.

At some point, nearly every parent has heard their child say, “I hate school!” And while this sentiment often passes, sometimes it doesn’t and parents are left to wonder if their student would be better off in a different educational environment. Transitioning to another school is a big decision however, affecting not only the child but the entire family. Before making this move, here are few questions to consider.
– By switching schools, is my child missing an important opportunity to learn how to work through a difficult situation? – Have I talked with my child's teacher and principal about my concerns? Have they been receptive to helping us find a solution? – Are there things about our current school that my child does like? Will we be able to find these attributes in our next school?
– If my child is ahead academically, or behind, has my current school stepped in with the resources or support systems in place to help him or her? – If we are contemplating homeschooling or online school, have we evaluated what kind of commitment or lifestyle changes this decision might require?
– How will going to a new school affect the rest of our family in terms of morning or after school routines, drive time, coordinating schedules, etc.? Before changing schools, think carefully about the specific problems you feel your child is experiencing and give your school a chance to address these issues. You may find that once a conversation is initiated, there are resources available you were unaware of and supportive staff who care about resolving the problem.
If you do decide to change schools: – Research a variety of school options and attend open houses or set up meetings with administration at each school you are considering. – Ask if your child can shadow a day at a prospective school or you can sit in on a classroom. Attend a few school functions to get a sense of the culture and community of the places you’re interested in.
– When evaluating new schools, take your child’s opinions into account but don’t leave the final decision of where to attend up to him or her. As their parent, this is ultimately your decision as you carefully weigh the pros and cons of each school you are considering. Once you’ve chosen a new school, talk with your child about the importance of going in with a positive attitude and being patient with the process of settling in. It may take some time for your child, and you, to make the adjustment. Having an ongoing dialogue with your student and setting realistic expectations for the new year can help make this transition a success for everyone involved.

AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY DINOSAUR GALLERY AT COSI Open daily COSI’s newest exhibit makes for a fun day trip for Cincinnati families. Highlights include a 6-footlong mechanical T. rex model that walks in place; an 8-foot tall Titanosaur femur; three-horned Triceratops cast; 100-year-old piece of fossilized amber preserving an ancient feather and full-sized cast of a Tyrannosaurus rex. MISSION AEROSPACE Kids dream of becoming pilots and astronauts, and most adults never quite grow out of that dream! This May, the Cincinnati Museum Center is giving kids the chance to reach for the stars. This interactive exhibit features over a dozen experiments, puzzles and activities are packed into an a-maze-ing journey of twists and turns through an interactive aeronautical labyrinth. Kids will learn about the history of rockets and flight, explore aeronautics technology and test the laws of aerodynamics by creating advanced paper airplanes and rockets.
