WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
ummer is not our family dog’s favorite season. He’s a 100-pound Rough Collie (think Lassie), with loads of beautiful, thick, long fur. Rough Collies were bred to herd sheep in Scotland, where the weather is typically cool and moderate. That thick fur has served his ancestors well.
But a Rough Collie in the humid Midwest? In July? Our doggie is not a fan. During these hot summer months, you’ll find him napping in the coolest parts of the house: the downstairs restroom or the laundry room. Sometimes, my children will try to coax him outside to play. He will give it his best effort, but after about 10 minutes, he’s done with “outside” and pawing at the door, asking to come back inside. In the summer, our doggie’s default preferred hangout is any spot where there’s abundant, cold air coming through the vents.
I get it. July is usually one of the hottest months in the Midwest, and it’s usually right about now when I start to choose being
indoors with air conditioning over baking in the hot sun outdoors. If you’re also feeling the same, then check out “Summer Fun Without the Sun” on page 32 . It might be hot this month, but that doesn’t mean you need to stay at home — or hang out in your restroom or laundry room like my dog. There are lots of great places around Indy to play and explore, and best of all they are climate-controlled.
Sure, being outdoors is great during the summer. But isn’t it nice that we have (air-conditioned!) options for entertainment? My dog would agree.
Stay cool!

E xercise and physical activity can have a huge impact on mental health. It has even been linked to improved concentration, attention span and academic performance.
Besides helping to reduce stress, exercise is also known to reduce anxiety and symptoms of depression. By engaging in physical activity, children can learn healthy coping mechanisms and develop resilience to life's challenges. In fact, doctors say children who are more physically active also have better academic performance, memory and improved attention.
“Studies show that exercise leads to changes in neurons that control arousal and attention, increased levels of proteins that maintain brain health, the growth of new neurons in brain networks involved in learning and memory, and increased brain blood distribution,” says Dr. Shannon Dillon, primary care physician at Riley Children’s Health. “There is evidence connecting cardiovascular risk factors with brain health as we age. Physical activity has shown to lower rates of dementia and other forms of cognitive decline in older adults. Making physical activity a regular part of family life benefits everyone’s cognitive health in the long run!”
Dillon went on to say that by engaging in physical activity, children can learn healthy coping mechanisms and develop resilience to life's challenges.
“Children who develop the habit of regular physical activity at a young age have lower rates of depression and anxiety than their less active peers,” Dillon says.
“Exercise releases endorphins in the brain that elevate a person’s mood along with their energy levels. These endorphins continue to release after the exercise session has ended, which can result in improved sleep, improved mood, focus and overall mental health.”
Physical activity can also give kids a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment as their skills improve and they meet milestones they might not have known they could reach.

And whether children play team sports or pursue less competition-based activities like running or hiking, engaging in shared physical activity with other young people can give them a sense of community and belonging while alleviating social anxiety.
Here are some fun activities for littles to consider at Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience at The Children’s Museum:
• Basketball: Hoops as short as 4 feet tall with small basketballs
• Football: Little Legends Training Zone. Kids ages 5 and younger can run through an agility course, passing wall and tiny field goal kicking area
• Soccer: Half of the soccer field is designated for kids 5 and younger, to allow for a safe place for young children to play.
• Baseball: Hit a ball off a tee at the Wiese Baseball Field and run around the bases.
• Golf: There’s a gated toddler course within the Pete and Alice Dye Golf Experience
By having your child participate in exercise and fitness programs, you are helping them with their physical, mental and social well-being. Plus, you are setting the foundation for a healthy and active lifestyle for the rest of their lives!

Staying active during and after pregnancy is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and promoting overall well-being. But how can you fit fitness into your routine when your body is going through so many changes? Let’s explore some fun and practical ways for pregnant and new mamas to stay fit and enjoy all the physical and mental health benefits.
Prenatal yoga is a fantastic way to stay active while expecting. It helps with flexibility, eases back pain and promotes relaxation. Plus, it's a great way to prepare your body for childbirth!
Many yoga studios offer special classes just for pregnant women, focusing on gentle stretches and breathing exercises that are safe for you and your baby. Check out local studios like Invoke (invokestudio.com) and Source Yoga (sourceyoga.net).
Once the baby arrives, finding time to exercise can be tough. Stroller fitness groups, like FIT4MOM (carmel.fit4mom.com), can help you get back in shape while you meet a supportive community of other new moms. These groups meet in parks or community centers, letting you work out while keeping your baby close by. You can expect a mix of walking or jogging with strollers, bodyweight exercises and strength training.
Baby bootcamp classes are designed for new mothers who want to regain their pre-pregnancy fitness levels. These classes incorporate cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises that can be done with or without the baby. Many bootcamps offer different levels of intensity, so you can start where you’re comfortable. You can even use your baby as part of the workout, whether in a carrier, stroller or as a little extra weight during exercises.
Finding a gym that understands the needs of parents can be a game-changer. Many gyms, like the Monon Community Center (carmelclayparks.com/monon-community-center) and the YMCA (indymca.org ), offer childcare services, so you can work out without worrying about your little one. Some even have special classes
for new mothers, focusing on postnatal fitness and recovery. With flexible hours and a family-friendly atmosphere, these gyms make it easier to stick to a regular workout routine.
If you prefer working out at home, there are plenty of options. Online fitness programs, apps, and YouTube channels offer tons of workouts that you can do right in your living room. From prenatal Pilates to postpartum strength training, you’ll find exercises tailored to each stage of motherhood. Home workouts are super convenient and flexible, perfect for fitting in a quick session during nap times or whenever you have a spare moment.
Swimming is a low-impact exercise that’s easy on the joints and perfect for both pregnant and postpartum women. It gives you a full-body workout, improving cardiovascular health, strength, and endurance. Swimming can also be a relaxing way to unwind and relieve the physical discomforts associated with pregnancy.
Joining a pool that you can access yearround will help give you a boost during the colder months in Indianapolis.
Strength training is important for maintaining muscle tone and overall physical health. During pregnancy, it helps prepare the body for the demands of childbirth. After pregnancy, it helps with recovery and rebuilding muscle strength. Using light weights or resistance bands, you can perform exercises that target different muscle groups. Just be sure to check with your healthcare provider to ensure the exercises are safe for your specific stage of pregnancy or postpartum recovery.
Staying motivated to exercise can be challenging, especially with the demands of motherhood. Here are some tips to keep you on track:
Set Realistic Goals: Start with small, achievable goals and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts.
Schedule Workouts: Treat exercise like an important appointment. Set aside specific times for your workouts and stick to them.
Find a Buddy: Meeting up with another mom can provide accountability and make exercising more enjoyable.
Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels and avoid pushing yourself too hard. Rest when needed.
Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Progress is progress!
Incorporating fitness into your life during and after pregnancy can make a big difference in your well-being and energy levels. Whether it’s through prenatal yoga, stroller fitness groups, or home workouts, there are plenty of ways to stay active and healthy. Embrace this journey with positivity and dedication, knowing that every step you take is a stride towards a healthier, happier you!
Family-friendly football fun returns this summer.
My kids love cheering on the Indianapolis Colts — we watch them on TV and have even been to a home game. But one of our favorite ways to experience the Colts in person comes around every summer during Colts Training Camp. It's really neat to see the Colts football team so close from the stands, preparing for another great season!
This year, Colts fans are invited to experience the action and family-friendly festivities of Colts Training Camp at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield. The first practice kicks off on July 25, and practices will be open to the public with dates through August 15. Parents love their children, but sometimes it’s nice to have a kid-free date night. If you’re seeking an adults-only evening, look no further than the nine options below. Some are family venues with specific events for adults, and some are always restricted to those over 21.
Date night turns into camp night on July 12 at the Indiana State Museum. Explore the museum’s exhibits after hours and sample s’mores-inspired snacks and drinks. The July 12 event features stargazing, campfire storytelling and an obstacle course to relive fun camp memories. 650 W. Washington St., Indianapolis | indianamuseum.org
Instead of a date night, consider a date day on July 13 with a summer camp that isn’t for kids. Learn archery, ziplining and crafts at Conner Prairie for a full day of fun activities tailor-made for grown-ups. Lunch and dinner are provided, with beer and wine available for an additional fee. After a day of camp, consider staying for Symphony on the Prairie. 13400 Allisonville Rd., Fishers | connerprairie.org
Listen to a live performance or DJ at Greenwood’s Freedom Springs Water Park for their monthly adults-only nights on July 19 and August 9 at 7 p.m. Race down the water slide or cruise along the lazy river, or perhaps reserve a cabana and enjoy time with friends. Reservations required. 850 W. Stop 18 Rd., Greenwood | greenwood.in.gov
The Waterpark at the Monon Community Center kicks the kids out of the pool for its designated Monon Mixer evenings. Each night has a different theme, such as Swiftie Night on August 2. Visitors can bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages, with a bar and limited concessions available on site. Make the evening even more special by renting a cabana for the evening. Registration is required, and tickets include access to all water park amenities such as the lazy river, surf simulator and plunge slides. 1195 Central Park Dr W, Carmel | carmelclayparks.com
Most people don’t think of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis as an adult-only location. But a few times a year, the popular destination limits its visitors to those who can partake in a cash bar. On October 19, the children-free museum allows grown-ups to walk through all of the exhibits at leisure for a special Halloween celebration. Visitors can enjoy food, beverages, and the annual haunted house, as well as a chance to sit on a mock jury and determine the fate of misplaced spirits. 3000 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis | childrensmuseum.org
Unleash your inner middle schooler and battle for the top score on more than 50 arcade games and pinball machines at 16-Bit Bar+Arcade. Those who prefer social time to screen time can sample the craft cocktails, beer and wine. Slush Puppies and mocktails are also on the menu. Play any of the games for free with a purchase from the bar. Light snacks are available or bring your own food. 110 E. New York St., Indianapolis | 16-bitbar.com
A cross between bowling and football, Fowling seems simple at first: throw a football at opponents’ pins until they’ve all fallen. But with balls from other lanes also occasionally attacking, the game can become a hysterical descent
into chaos. There are no rules regulating how to throw, so even novices can easily participate. While Fowling Warehouse is open to families all day on Sundays, no children are allowed after 8 p.m. the other nights of the week. 1125 E. Brookside Ave., Indianapolis | fowlingwarehouse.com
Whether it’s learning to salsa at the Thursday night Latin Dance Party or listening to the Monday evening Jazz Jam session, The Jazz Kitchen has fun date night options for any interest. Enjoy live music other nights of the week while sampling a full menu of Cajun-inspired dishes. 5377 N. College Ave., Indianapolis | thejazzkitchen.com
Though Tappers is known for a range of arcade games and pinball machines, they also offer Nintendo 64 and Genesis. Arcade games are free to play with any purchase from the bar. Guests can sample the rotating selection of draft beer or craft cocktails. While Tappers doesn’t serve food, patrons may bring their own or have it delivered. 501 Virginia St., In-
dianapolis | tappersarcadebar.com

Discover practical ways to prepare your child for the change.
Changing schools is tough on kids. The loss of best friends and familiar teachers they’ve come to rely upon can be something many children dread. But there are a number of reasons why your child will, at some point in their life, need to switch up schools.
For example, your family could be moving to a different city with its own school system. Or your current school might not be quite the right fit. Or, your child requires special accommodations.
Whatever the reason, your child’s move to a new school can pose a unique set of challenges. But there are many ways to navigate the transition to a new school and make this change an easier one for you and your kid. Meg Tibayan, co-founder and home educator at Bright Sprouts, a resource for curated learning activities, offers tips and advice for not only starting a new school in Indianapolis, but how to find the best one for your child.
Before enrolling your child into a new school, it is always a great idea to assess your child’s particular needs.
“Every child’s needs are unique,” Tibayan says. But also, the “one size fits all” approach to selecting a new school does not work for every child. “By understanding each child’s strengths and challenges, we can tailor strategies to enable them to thrive at their new school.” Therefore, it makes sense to do some research into your different school options.
Indianapolis families can use the School Finder tools on Enroll Indy (enrollindy.org) to find the right school for them. Enroll Indy also runs the lottery for Indianapolis Public Schools.
There are many different public-school options in the city. Your search might include neighborhood public schools or charter schools, or even private schools. Families can also search the system for other academic programs and compare schools by reviewing each school’s profile.
This initial conversation sets the stage for how your child will perceive the transition.
“As an educator, I see how young minds are affected by change,” Tibayan adds. “Children can easily feel stressed, anxious or overwhelmed when faced with a new school environment.” Keeping a positive attitude around your child will greatly help.
Next, you will want to visit the new school together. But make sure you do this prior to the new school year, giving your kid time to adjust to the idea of the new school as they enjoy their summer break. During this time, you will want to encourage open communication with your child.
“Create a supportive environment where your child feels safe to express their emotions, whether they are excited, nervous, or upset,” Tibayan says. “Showing empathy and validating their feelings can help them cope with the transition.”
Once school starts at the new school, make sure you implement a sense of consistency. “Start adapting your daily routine to align with the new school’s schedule,” Tibayan says. She points out that this might include anything such as adjusting sleep, meals and homework routines to gradually easing into the new timetable.
At the same time, as your child transitions to their new school and schedule, you will want to stay accessible and involved. “Be available to discuss their experiences and assist with any challenges they face during the first few weeks of school,” Tibayan says.
And just as important, take the time to celebrate milestones. “Acknowledge and celebrate your child’s accomplishments, no matter how small,” Tibayan says. This can include celebrating their first month of attendance or meeting new friends.
The first day of school is almost here! That means it's time to say goodbye to the lazy days of summer and get back into the swing of things. To help you prepare for the excitement of a new school year, here is a handy checklist to help you make sure you've got all your bases covered:
Schedule Checkups.
The end of summer is a great time to schedule those yearly health appointments! Get the kids in for dental checkups, eye exams, and physicals to ensure they're ready to tackle the school year with a clean bill of health.
Refresh Your Wardrobe.
It's time to stock up on fresh school clothes. Check out local stores, including consignment stores, to find new-to-you clothing, shoes and accessories.
Re-establish a Bedtime Routine. Transitioning from summer to school can be challenging. Start inching bedtime earlier in the weeks leading up to the first day of school to help ease the adjustment.
Mark Your Calendar.
Now is a good time to write down important school dates, like meet-the-teacher day, backto-school nights, PTO meetings and more.
Plan for Lunch. If your child will be buying lunch at school, make sure their lunch account has been replenished with funds. If they will take lunch, purchase a lunch bag and lunch containers, or clean the old ones. It might also help to find out from the school if there are any restrictions on certain foods (like peanuts).
Schedule a Haircut. Help your child look their best with a fresh cut or trim.
Now you're well on your way to ensuring a smooth transition back into the school routine. Here's to a fantastic school year!

ocated in the heart of Broad Ripple, Create Art Studio opened its doors last fall and has since provided unique art opportunities. Co-founders
Chrissy Sweigart and Alissa Moody utilized their passion and appreciation for art to cultivate creativity and community. This studio has become a space where individuals of all ages and skill levels can explore their artistic passions. From its welcoming atmosphere to its diverse range of classes and workshops, Create Art Studio has established itself as a vital hub for artistic expression in the local community.
Process based art is choice-driven, artist directed and celebrates the experience of discovery. The result of process art is always unique, and the focus is on the creation rather than the outcome. The artist has freedom in how they execute the projects.
WORDS BY BRODY TISDALE
“To me, processbased art is about discovery and exploration,” Sweigart says. “It takes away the fear of making something look exactly like someone else’s art. You are introduced to different mediums, materials, inspiration and you create something based on your interests.”
The studio’s wide-ranging opportunities allow for everyone to find comfort, creativity and enjoyment through their programming.
Indy natives Sweigart and Moody found themselves inspired by the idea of bringing art opportunities to their community. While on a trip to Bend, Oregon, Moody found inspiration at a local art studio, something that Indianapolis lacked.
“We really wanted to create something that can be for all ages, not intimidating, where people can create process-based art in a setting where local artists have the opportunity to
teach,” Moody says. The two friends collaborated to make these ideas a reality last fall.
One of the defining features of Create Art Studio is its extensive range of classes and workshops catering to various interests and skill levels. The studio is adaptable for all age groups to accommodate all artists. From drawing and acrylics to ceramics and sculpture, the studio offers a diverse array of opportunities for artistic exploration. Classes are taught by experienced instructors who are primarily local artists themselves. The teachers are passionate about sharing their knowledge and inspiring others to create while building the community.
Sweigart’s background as an art teacher aided the implementation of art programs based on age groups, with groups ranging from 1.5-4 years old to adult curriculum. Summer camps are currently available, along with various oneoff classes. Summer classes are a great opportunity to try out process-based art. The studio gears
back towards six-week semesters once the school year begins in the fall. Class themes often change throughout the year, with refreshing new ideas and opportunities.
Beyond regular classes, Create Art Studio also hosts special events, exhibitions and community outreach programs throughout the year. These events help showcase the talent of local artists and provide opportunities for networking, collaboration and cultural enrichment. From art walks to charity fundraisers, the studio actively engages with the broader community, reinforcing its role as a cultural hub in Broad Ripple.
What truly sets Create Art Studio apart is its unwavering commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. The studio firmly believes that art should be for everyone, regardless of background or experience. As such, it strives to create a welcoming environment where people from all walks of life can come together to create, learn and grow.
Looking ahead, Create Art Studio remains dedicated to its mission of fostering creativity and community in Broad Ripple and beyond. As it continues to evolve and grow, the studio remains committed to providing a space where artistic expression knows no bounds. Classes are available at createartstudioindy.com

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON
e have four children in our home ranging in age from 12 to 18. Four hungry children with hungry friends who wander into our kitchen at all hours of the day. The pantry is opened and closed repeatedly. The fridge light constantly illuminates the first floor. My kids are on a mission: it’s Operation Snack Time.
Except, a pack of fruit snacks doesn’t seem to get the job done anymore. Now, it’s trays of chicken nuggets and frozen pizzas popped in the oven. It’s multiple bowls of cereal consumed in a row. It’s a bottomless, endless pit at war with my bank account that very much is not bottomless and very much has an ending.
To help save my bank account — especially with the rising cost of groceries — I have learned some cost saving tricks.
When our family was smaller and the kids were younger, it didn’t seem to make sense to buy in bulk. But now, it absolutely does. Memberships to Costco, Sam’s Club, BJs and other stores that sell items in bulk are completely worth it. It might be painful to spend a lot upfront, but in the long run, you will save money buying bulk versus buying those items from your local grocery store multiple times.
Aldi has found a way to cut overhead costs so that they can cut the cost of the food. They have small stores, no bagging, use non-name-brand products, minimal decorating, meat sourced from regional stock, and carts locked up and used by the quarter system. All this adds up to providing quality food at a cost that won’t break the bank. Trust me, Aldi is amazing. If someone tries to tell you otherwise, my guess is they have never stepped foot in one themselves.
If something your family loves is on sale, buy it in bulk while you can. Especially meat and other proteins. If you have room in your freezer, you can always freeze what you can’t eat by the expiration date and enjoy it another time. Take advantage of sales and consider planning
your weekly meals around items that are on sale that week.
Protein-rich foods keep us full longer than carb-heavy foods. These are the foods you want your kids grabbing during their food raid. Consider stocking up on yogurt, cheese, meat, nuts and other high-protein foods that will both satisfy and fill.
In addition to sale items, grocery stores are offer coupons to make those prices go down even more. Most stores have digital coupons you can clip that attach to your store card that will automatically be applied at checkout.
Grocery stores now offer the option to shop online, for either pickup or delivery. Even with a list in hand at the store, I al-
ways end up with way more on my way out than I planned to purchase on my way in. Online shopping not only saves time, it also saves money, because it cuts down on impulse buying.
In addition to planning meals around what’s on sale, just having a meal plan saves money. Instead of scrambling and trying to figure out what’s for dinner, or needing to run out and grab fast food, you know what’s for dinner and can use what you have efficiently and wisely. If you are close to reaching your grocery budget for the month, look at what you already have and try to use that in the week's meals. A little creativity can go a long way.
It’s OK to have times during the day when the pantry and fridge are off limits. For our home, it’s a couple hours before mealtime. I know if my kids are snacking right up until the time dinner is on the table, then they won’t eat what’s been prepared for them. It’s OK if they are hungry for a little while. Plus, dinner will be a lot more appealing if they haven’t had five bowls of cereal just 30 minutes ago.
Feeding growing tweens and teens is no joke! But it doesn’t have to break the bank. With a little planning, preparation and some boundaries placed around mealtime, you might find your bank account growing — just like your kids.
s parents, there are many things outside our control. We might try to enforce our schedules and desires, but our children are their own people, with their own likes, dislikes and strong wills. And when your child won’t eat the food you put on their plate, it can be a vexing experience.
Many kids with special needs have food aversions, so what do you do when it feels like you’ve tried everything and nothing is working? Here are some tangible tips to get your child to move from picky to at least willing to give some new foods a try.
There’s a reason we see a lot of the same items on the kids menus at restaurants. Kids tend to like more bland tasting foods than adults, and the reason for this may be somewhat biological.
The taste buds of children are more intense than those of adults. Couple that with the fact that some children with special needs are hypersensitive to sensory stimuli, and this means a food they don’t enjoy may actually taste very, very bad to them. Because of this, you may want to limit the amount of strong tasting foods you introduce at a young age, especially if your child is sensitive to stimulus.
WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON
Repeated exposure to foods we dislike might actually help us to like them in the long run. But how do you get that exposure if your child is refusing to eat?
One option is to try using a reward system. For example, if your child doesn’t like peas, start with just one pea. Let your child know if they eat a pea, they will receive a sticker on their food chart. Every pea equals one more sticker. After they get a certain amount of stickers, they can choose a prize or something they enjoy. Make the reward unique and motivating by choosing things they love.
Oftentimes, children with special needs enjoy structure. Explain to them how this food chart will work and at each meal, offer a food that will give them the potential to earn a sticker on their chart. This can make mealtime something your child looks forward to, instead of something you both dread.
If mealtime has become a battle zone, your child might be experiencing anxiety around sitting down for dinner. This anxiety response can reduce hunger, making the idea of eating even less appealing.
If you sense your child feeling anxious prior to meals, try using relaxation techniques. Let your child know you will be eating in 10 minutes, but prior to that, you will sit down and breathe deep together. Try box breathing. Breathe in for the count of four, hold for four and breathe out for four. Do this for as long as it takes until you feel your child has calmed down and is ready to move to the table.
For some kids, food aversion is more than just not liking something. It is a legitimate fear, and it needs to be addressed. It might be a fear of foods that are certain colors or textures. Or it might be a type of food.
If you know your child has a fear of foods, then slow exposure is key. If they don’t like foods that are orange, try showing them an orange food from far away. As they are able to get closer to the food, have them touch it, or stick a fork in it and see how it feels. Challenge them to face their fears gradually and reward them with praise. This also may be best done in a clinical setting with a professional instead of at home.
We are all unique and there are many reasons children are picky eaters. Like with all things, you know your child best. Please be encouraged and know it is possible to work through the picky eating phase and hopefully come to the other side. If you feel your child is struggling to get the nutrients needed for growth and development, be sure to have medical professionals on board to both monitor and help your child. They may suggest nutrient rich drinks and vitamins to help supplement those things they are currently lacking.
