ummer is not our family dog’s favorite season. He’s a 100-pound Rough Collie (think Lassie), with loads of beautiful, thick, long fur. Rough Collies were bred to herd sheep in Scotland, where the weather is typically cool and moderate. That thick fur has served his ancestors well.
But a Rough Collie in the humid Midwest? In July? Our doggie is not a fan. During these hot summer months, you’ll find him napping in the coolest parts of the house: the downstairs restroom or the laundry room. Sometimes, my children will try to coax him outside to play. He will give it his best effort, but after about 10 minutes, he’s done with “outside” and pawing at the door, asking to come back inside. In the summer, our doggie’s default preferred hangout is any spot where there’s abundant, cold air coming through the vents.
I get it. July is usually one of the hottest months in the Midwest, and it’s usually right about now when I start to choose being indoors with
air conditioning over baking in the hot sun outdoors. If you’re also feeling the same, then check out “Summer Fun Without the Sun” on page 14 . It might be hot this month, but that doesn’t mean you need to stay at home — or hang out in your restroom or laundry room like my dog. There are lots of great places around southwest Ohio to play and explore, and best of all they are climate-controlled.
Sure, being outdoors is great during the summer. But isn’t it nice that we have (air-conditioned!) options for entertainment? My dog would agree.
Stay cool!

f you like to climb or want to give it a try, Urban Krag Climbing Center offers Ohio’s most diverse and largest indoor climbing walls in what was once an abandoned and decrepit church at the corner of Clay and Cass streets. We tend to think of climbing as an adult exercise, but in reality, kids can climb, too. The minimum age to climb is 4 years old, accompanied by a belay-certified legal guardian or parent. (Belaying refers to monitoring the rope system that protects the climber if they fall.)
The beauty of Urban Krag is that it’s not the typical climb you see at fairs and gathering places. The center features over 10,000 feet of vertical terrain varying in height from 28 to 56 feet, and an inclined bouldering wall for both beginners and experienced climbers.
Getting started at Urban Krag offers two choices: bouldering in short climbs close to the ground that don’t involve ropes, or if you’re over 14, completing a belay certification course. Staff belayers and auto-belays are not available. All climbers must have a waiver, so check the website for requirements and to print and complete it. Day passes, memberships and equipment rentals are available.
WORDS BY DAYTON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
rom injuries on the playground to the soccer field, many kids will have a broken bone at some point during childhood. When your child is injured, it can be overwhelming to know when and where to go for care. Here are the signs of a fracture, and where to go if you think your kiddo might have a broken bone.
Fractures or broken bones are injuries that occur when a bone is subjected to more force than it can handle, resulting in a crack or break. Children are particularly prone to fractures due to their active lifestyle, participation in sports and adventurous nature. Fractures in pediatric patients require special attention because children's bones are still growing and have unique considerations, like growth plates, compared to adults.
Knowing the signs and symptoms of a fracture will help determine when and where to take your child for care. Here are some common signs of a fracture:
• Hearing a snap or grinding noise when they got hurt.
• Swelling, bruising or tenderness where it hurts.
If your child has the following symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention right away.
• A fracture with a cut or wound, especially if bone is visible
• An injury with obvious deformity, such as a limb that is crooked, angled or looks funny. Sometimes it is helpful to compare it to the other side.
• Significant pain that has not at least somewhat improved after a couple hours of rest, ice, elevation and Tylenol or Motrin.
Depending on the day and time, your family has several options when seeking care for a suspected fracture.
• Urgent or emergency care: Depending on severity of the injury, the emergency department or urgent care might be the best place for care. They can help manage your child’s pain and provide them with the appropriate durable medical equipment to manage their fracture.
• Pediatric orthopedic specialist: Kids are not little adults. They require specialized care, especially when it comes to their bones. A pediatric orthopedic specialist has the training and background to treat and manage fractures, and should be consulted for a suspected fracture in a child.
• Pain when they move, touch or press on the area, or if they can't put weight on it, especially if it's a leg.
• The area looks bent or wrong. With really bad breaks, you might see the bone poking through the skin.
Although most broken bones simply need a cast, brace or boot to heal, other more serious fractures (such as compound fractures) might require surgery to be properly aligned and to make sure the bones stay together during the healing process. Dayton Children’s Hospital is dedicated to the relentless pursuit of optimal health for every child within our reach. To connect with Dayton Children’s, visit childrensdayton.org

Staying active during and after pregnancy is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and promoting overall well-being. But how can you fit fitness into your routine when your body is going through so many changes? Let’s explore some fun and practical ways for pregnant and new mamas to stay fit and enjoy all the physical and mental health benefits.
Prenatal yoga is a fantastic way to stay active while expecting. It helps with flexibility, eases back pain, and promotes relaxation. Plus, it's a great way to prepare your body for childbirth. Many yoga studios offer special classes just for pregnant women, focusing on gentle stretches and breathing exercises that are safe for you and your baby. Check out local studios like Shine Yoga (shineyoga.com), NKO Yoga (nkoyoga.com) and Day Yoga Studio (dayyogastudio.com).
Once the baby arrives, finding time to exercise can be tough. Stroller fitness groups, like FIT4MOM (centralcincinnati. fit4mom.com), can help you get back in shape while you meet a supportive community of other new moms! These groups meet in parks or community centers, letting you work out while keeping your baby close by. You can expect a mix of walking or jogging with strollers, bodyweight exercises, and strength training.
Baby bootcamp classes are designed for new mothers who want to regain their pre-pregnancy fitness levels. These classes incorporate cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises that can be done with or without the baby. Many bootcamps offer different levels of intensity, so you can start where you’re comfortable. You can even use your baby as part of the workout, whether in a carrier, stroller, or as a little extra weight during exercises. Check out TriHealth (tinyurl.com/mammaswithkiddos) for their ongoing Mama with Kiddos Bootcamp and Barre classes.
Finding a gym that understands the needs of parents can be a game-changer. Many gyms, like the Cincinnati Sports Club (cincinnatisportsclub.com) and the YMCA (myy. org , daytonymca.org ), offer childcare services, so you can work out without worrying about your little one.
Some even have special classes for new mothers, focusing on postnatal fitness and recovery. With flexible hours and a family-friendly atmosphere, these gyms make it easier to stick to a regular workout routine.
If you prefer working out at home, there are plenty of options! Online fitness programs, apps, and YouTube channels offer tons of workouts that you can do right in your living room. From prenatal Pilates to postpartum strength training, you’ll find exercises tailored to each stage of motherhood. Home workouts are super convenient and flexible, perfect for fitting in a quick session during nap times or whenever you have a spare moment.
Swimming is a low-impact exercise that’s easy on the joints and perfect for both pregnant and postpartum women. It gives you a full-body workout, improving cardiovascular health, strength, and endurance. Swimming can also be a relaxing way to unwind and relieve the physical discomforts associated with pregnancy.
Joining a pool that you can access yearround will help give you a boost during the colder months in Southwest Ohio.
Strength training is important for maintaining muscle tone and overall physical health. During pregnancy, it helps prepare the body for the demands of childbirth. After pregnancy, it helps with recovery and rebuilding muscle strength. Using light weights or resistance bands, you can perform exercises that target different muscle groups. Just be sure to check with your healthcare provider to ensure the exercises are safe for your specific stage of pregnancy or postpartum recovery.
Staying motivated to exercise can be challenging, especially with the demands of motherhood. Here are some tips to keep you on track:
Set Realistic Goals: Start with small, achievable goals and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts.
Schedule Workouts: Treat exercise like an important appointment. Set aside specific times for your workouts and stick to them.
Find a Buddy: Meeting up with another mom can provide accountability and make exercising more enjoyable.
Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels and avoid pushing yourself too hard. Rest when needed.
Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Progress is progress!
Incorporating fitness into your life during and after pregnancy can make a big difference in your well-being and energy levels. Whether it’s through prenatal yoga, stroller fitness groups, or home workouts, there are plenty of ways to stay active and healthy. Embrace this journey with positivity and dedication, knowing that every step you take is a stride towards a healthier, happier you!

Discover practical ways to prepare your child for the change.
hanging schools is tough on kids. The loss of best friends and familiar teachers they’ve come to rely upon can be something many children dread. But there are a number of reasons why your child will, at some point in their life, need to switch up schools.
For example, your family could be moving to a different city with its own school system. Or your current school might not be quite the right fit. Or, your child requires special accommodations.
Whatever the reason, your child’s move to a new school can pose a unique set of challenges. But there are many ways to navigate the transition to a new school and make this change an easier one for you and your kid. Meg Tibayan, co-founder and home educator at Bright Sprouts, a resource for curated learning activities, offers tips and advice for not only starting a new school, but how to find the best one for your child.
Many parents like the choice of sending their children to a different school. A new survey released in September 2023 by the nonprofit Mind Trust revealed that most parents like the idea of picking their child’s school. Overall, the survey shares why charter school parents like their kids’ school, from the schools offering parents and kids a sense of community to promoting innovative curriculums and educational programs not found at other schools. If given the option, 67% of respondents said that they would recommend their chosen school to another family because they like their choice so much.
In Ohio, Open Enrollment offers students the chance to attend a school tuition-free in a district outside the immediate area in which they live. Every school district in Ohio may or may not choose to accept students through open enrollment every spring, as it all depends on the school’s current enrollment numbers.
sense to do some research into your different school options.
If you are interested in a certain Ohio school district, contact their enrollment office. Application periods start in spring, and each district has its own unique application process and timetables. Aside from finding the program that’s right for your kid, also bear in mind that parents are responsible for transportation for their child to the new school district. And so, it is a good idea to inquire what options the school district may be able to offer in special cases.
Once you determine the right school, you will want to prepare your kid for the transition. “Early preparation helps ensure the transition is gradual and not abrupt, minimizing stress,” Tibayan says.
One way to do this is to discuss the move positively with your child. “Explain to your child why the move is happening and highlight the positive aspects,” Tibayan says. “Create a narrative that frames the change in a hopeful and exciting manner. This initial conversation sets the stage for how your child will perceive the transition.
“As an educator, I see how young minds are affected by change,” Tibayan adds. “Children can easily feel stressed, anxious or overwhelmed when faced with a new school environment.” Keeping a positive attitude around your child will greatly help.
Next, you will want to visit the new school together. But make sure you do this prior to the new school year, giving your kid time to adjust to the idea of the new school as they enjoy their summer break. During this time, you will want to encourage open communication with your child.
“Create a supportive environment where your child feels safe to express their emotions, whether they are excited, nervous, or upset,” Tibayan says. “Showing empathy and validating their feelings can help them cope with the transition.”
Once school starts at the new school, make sure you implement a sense of consistency. “Start adapting your daily routine to align with
the new school’s schedule,” Tibayan says. She points out that this might include anything such as adjusting sleep, meals and homework routines to gradually easing into the new timetable.
At the same time, as your child transitions to their new school and schedule, you will want to stay accessible and involved. “Be available to discuss their experiences and assist with any challenges they face during the first few weeks of school,” Tibayan says.
And just as important, take the time to celebrate milestones. “Acknowledge and celebrate your child’s accomplishments, no matter how small,” Tibayan says. This can include celebrating their first month of attendance or meeting new friends.
