Parents' Night Out I love every issue of Cincinnati Parent, but this month’s issue is really speaking to me. I’m digging this issue because of an article we included about datenight ideas. You see, on August 8, my husband and I will have been married 10 years. Ten years! Yes, a double-digit anniversary is a big deal, and it is definitely worthy of a big-deal trip to somewhere fun and far away (and kid-free). But, because we are parents with jobs and responsibilities and things around the house that need to be fixed, a big anniversary trip just wasn’t in the cards this year. That doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate a decade of marriage with some adults-only fun, though.
That’s where “8 Date Night Ideas” on page 30 comes in. There are lots of places around Cincy where parents can have fun WITH kids… but this article is for the times when you want to do something fun WITHOUT kids. As for me, it’s now just a matter of trying to decide where to go. Do my husband and I want to practice our golf swings at an indoor driving range? Throw some clay on a pottery wheel? Take in a free outdoor concert? There are so many options! Where do you go when you want to spend time away from the kids? Shoot me an email at nicolesipe@cincinnatiparent.com and send me your ideas!

1940s DAY RETURNS TO UNION TERMINAL!
480,000 THAT’S HOW MANY YELLOW SCHOOL BUSES HIT THE ROADS EACH YEAR ACROSS AMERICA.
DID YOU KNOW?
A standard pencil has enough graphite to write roughly 45,000 words or draw a line 35 miles long. No word on whether or not anyone has put these numbers to the test. Sources: newgeography.com; becksautocenter.com
Jump and jive your way to Union Terminal this August! This year’s 1940s Day happens August 10 from 10 am to 5 pm and returns to Cincinnati’s most iconic Art Deco building, Union Terminal. 1940s Day celebrates Union Terminal’s heritage as a transit hub, style icon and friendly respite during that pivotal decade. This event highlights the magic of the ‘40s, with dance shows and lessons, a costume contest, a classic vintage car show and more. 1940s Day also delves into the darkness of the decade: Dr. Renate Neeman, born in Hildesheim, Germany, in 1926, will share her story of survival during the Holocaust, and The Japan America Society of Greater Cincinnati will host a lecture about the internment of Japanese-American citizens during World War II. Mark your calendar for August 10 and travel back in time at the newly restored Union Terminal. 1940s Day is free for veterans and CMC members and included with a Discovery Pass. cincymuseum.org/1940sday
Teacher Appreciation,
Cincinnati Zoo style
School’s right around the corner, and Cincy kids have all gone a little wild. And as Cincinnati parents breathe a collective sigh of relief, Cincinnati teachers are hard at work. As teachers get their syllabi finished and classrooms in order, the Cincinnati Zoo invites all educators to pause a minute and enjoy a day with some real wild animals. August 9-11, the Cincinnati Zoo is offering free admission to all educators, school faculty and staff. Simply bring a valid school employee ID or a teaching license with a photo ID to the Zoo ticket window to take advantage of this offer. As an added bonus, all educators who qualify for free admission may also purchase tickets for up to six family members at 50% off. PARENTING IN THE KIDWEST
Soccer Goals I never played soccer. Not even as a little kid. Soccer is the one sport I don’t understand. It’s also, ironically, the first sport my daughter wanted to try. I want to feel useful, like I can answer questions or help her practice. But when she asks me a question about soccer, what she doesn’t understand is that everything I know about soccer, I actually learned from watching her play.
So if you ask me, here are the complete rules to soccer, which I have gleaned from watching a preschool soccer class. 1. No hands. This rule is actually extremely optional. 2. Soccer is mainly about running in circles with a swarm of your friends and screaming. The ball is also optional.
4. If you insist on scoring, you must do it in the opponent’s goal. 5. An important soccer move everyone should learn is the one where you discover that there’s a trampoline behind all of the soccer equipment in the gym and you go jump on that instead of actually playing soccer, the thing your parents are paying for you to do. 6. One of the best power moves in soccer is called the “sit on your ball and pick your nose while Coach Amy is talking.” It’s pretty self-explanatory. 7. The biggest prize in soccer is not nailing an assist, scoring a goal, or even winning the game. It’s about knowing that you did your best. Just kidding! The biggest prize in soccer is getting a sticker on your hand at the end.
3. Soccer is more about the concept of “scoring” or “passing” than it is about actually “scoring” or “passing.” It’s a very intellectual pursuit. Again, to be clear: No one in the history of soccer has successfully passed or scored.

Safety is First at British Swim School At British Swim School, water safety means water survival skills, not just swim lessons
Each year, parents spend tremendous amounts of time and money on activities ranging from violin to soccer. They teach discipline, teamwork, focus and physical fitness, but none of these activities can save lives. However, water survival skills can. At British Swim School, the mission is to ensure that everyone, regardless of age or ability, has the opportunity to become a safe and happy swimmer. Safety is first… and foremost.
• often happen in the presence of one or both parents • can happen when children are out of sight for five minutes or less Since 1981, British Swim School has been dedicated to preventing these terrible outcomes by using a fun and gentle method focused on developing the individual swimmer’s skills. Private or small group classes are available for children as young as 3 months old all the way up to adults, and are open to any level of skill or ability. Everyone is welcome.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10 people die each day from unintentional drowning in the United States.
As one parent said at the start of their son’s swim lessons: “It’s not an activity — it’s a life skill.”
Drownings: • are silent

BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASICS
Ease into the transition and set your child up for a successful school year WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON
IT HAS BEEN SAID BEFORE THAT ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END, AND SUMMER VACATION IS NO EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE. AS SUMMER IS WINDING DOWN, YOUR MIND MAY BE SHIFTING TO ALL THINGS BACKTO-SCHOOL RELATED. FOR SOME, THE SHIFT FROM THE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER TO A MORE STRUCTURED SCHEDULE IS A WELCOME CHANGE; FOR OTHERS, THE THOUGHT CAN BE OVERWHELMING.
To help set you and your family up for a successful school year, we asked Leslie Rebholz, a mom from Xenia, Ohio, to share some of the ways she helps make the back-toschool transition as smooth as possible for her family. Because who better to give tips than a parent who’s been through the experience many times?
What are some things you have incorporated over the years to help make a successful transition back to school? Meet the teacher night helps kids to know where their classroom and desk will be. Also, the week before school starts, we get the kids in bed earlier by peeling back the time 5, 10, 15 minutes each night. Lastly, we have our kids pose for photos before school on the first day. You can make it fun with a sign. This way we get out to the bus stop early, too.
What advice do you have for parents sending their children to school for the first time who are worried about the transition?
As a mom, it’s easy to worry. Acknowledge worrying is a normal part of parenting. Your child looks to you be calm and stable.
How do you get your children on a routine?
Questions and open dialogue may help both you and your child with the transition. After school you could say, “Mommy missed you while you were at school today! Tell me about your day. What is one thing that was AWESOME? What is one thing you learned to do? What’s the name of your new friend? What was something that was not so fun?” Some other great questions are: Who did you sit next to at lunch? Do you have a classroom job? What did you learn about your new friend today? What are two things you are thankful for today? Knowing your child will not always be under your roof all day is a milestone for you, and perhaps a healthy, or needed, break. While they are at school, you can accomplish tasks, or discover a new hobby; possibly care for yourself by
16
CINCINNATIPARENT.COM I August 2019
exercising. Do something that fills your cup, makes you smile, even meet a friend for coffee or lunch! Mothering is no small task — you need a rest, too.
I have created laminated routines — before school, after school and bedtime — for each of my children. I let them select graphics to put next to the words, as my middle can’t read yet. These routines are posted in strategic places, such as the bathroom, bedroom and laundry room.
Any other parenting tips? Remember that each child is created differently. What works for one may not work for the other. Get to know each of your children and find what motivates them. Have one-on-one time with each child as often as you can. Recently I read this quote, “The average adult touches their phone 150 times a day. Touch [hug, kiss, tickle, fist bump…] your child five times a day.” I have learned, one thing that may work for one child, may not work for another. Remember, you’re in process as a parent too.
MORE BACK-TO-SCHOOL IDEAS: Read books about the first day of school (recommendation: "Chu’s First Day of School" by Neil Gaiman & Adam Rex).
Have a “dress rehearsal” and practice getting up, getting ready and out the door the week before school.
Celebrate the night before the first day of school with a special dinner.
Make a special treat for the first day after school.

AROUND TOWN
WORDS BY SARAH MCCOSHAM
Local Spotlight: Crayons to Computers This local organization is leveling the playing field in the classroom by providing students the tools to succeed in school What other resources are available to teachers? Research shows that teachers spend $500-$1,000 of their own money every year to buy supplies for their classes. With Crayons to Computers, teachers can shop for basic school supplies, incentive items and enhancements for their classroom — all for free. Teachers are very creative and can turn unusual donated items into a project or tool for their students.
What are some ways to get involved with Crayons to Computers? The school year’s starting, and those school supply lists aren’t going to purchase themselves. However, with recent statistics showing that one in five kids in Greater Cincinnati is living in poverty, many families struggle to buy non-essentials like school supplies. Luckily, there’s Crayons to Computers. Cincinnati Parent talked to Crayons to Computers president and CEO Amy Cheney to learn more about this wonderful organization and how the community can support local students and teachers.
Poverty is a big issue in Greater Cincinnati. How does poverty affect school performance? Imagine you are 8 years old. You report to homeroom on your first day of school and see kids opening their new backpacks full of notebooks, pencils, markers and scissors — laughing and comparing supplies. You showed up with nothing
18
CINCINNATIPARENT.COM I August 2019
because your family couldn't afford school supplies. How would you feel? How would you do your homework? How would you be successful in school? Without the basics, kids are not equipped to do their job. Our programs provide much-needed supplies to enable them to be successful in school.
Crayons to Computers is funded through the generosity of the community. The work we do is only possible because of the hundreds of volunteers who give of their time. People and groups can get involved with Crayons in many ways, including: • Donating cash or supplies; • Volunteering on a regular or episodic basis; • Hosting a Push 4 Pencils supply drive;
How does Crayons to Computers work? We believe that education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Teachers at schools where 60% or more of the student population receive free or reduced-cost lunch are eligible to access our Teacher Free Store or Mobile Outreach Program (MOP). The teachers at qualifying schools can shop at the Teacher Free Store up to 10 times during the school year. Teachers at some of our more distant schools can come to the Free Store. In 2014, Crayons started the MOP to address time and distance barriers; the truck takes a subset of the store’s inventory out to the more distant schools. For the upcoming school year, we expect about 57 schools to receive visits from the Mobile Store.
• Knitting hats, scarves or gloves for Crayons’ Keep Our Kids Warm program; • Filling out #MyWishForYou notes of encouragement to the students we serve • Attending an upcoming Show & Tell Tour — upcoming tours are October 18 and November 15 at 8:30 am.

HIDDEN GEMS
WORDS BY SARAH MCCOSHAM
The Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati If your kids are trainobsessed, you definitely need to put The Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati on your “must-visit” list. The Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati is located in Latonia, KY, at the former Louisville and Nashville Railroad yard. The museum is entirely volunteer-run and owns and maintains a comprehensive collection of authentic trains and railroad equipment. Today, there are roughly 80 trains and artifacts at the museum, including sleeping cars, box cars, dining cars, switchers, diesel locomotives and an old railway post office. The majority of the collection hails from the first half of the 20th century, which is obvious by the "Art Deco" feel and design of the trains.
There is so much for kids to do and experience at this museum. Some vehicles invite guests to "climb aboard" and explore. While not every train interior is accessible, most have exterior stairs and platforms to investigate. And with no trains running on these rails, kids are free to wander and explore. This museum is a living history lesson that lets kids touch, feel and interact with the past. There is simply no better place in Cincinnati to experience trains than The Railway Museum, which continues to thrive through the support of dedicated volunteers, curious kids and the everlasting allure of the locomotive. The Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati is open from 10 am-4 pm every Saturday, May through October. Tours are self-guided; however, if you can, find a volunteer to show you around. These volunteers are passionate about trains, and you’ll relish in their wealth of knowledge.

TEENS & TWEENS
WORDS BY REBECCA HILL
The College Prep Pressure Cooker How to help your teen navigate this stressful time
Finally, parents can play an essential role in helping their teens choose a college that is the right fit for them. “It’s a good idea to show students a large school (25,000+), a medium-sized school (10,00015,000) and a small school (2,000+), making sure that they also see a school in the city, one in the suburbs and one in a college town,” Marrs says. A campus tour in these places will give a student a good sense of what life is like on these college campuses.
Preparing for college is a pressure cooker of emotions for students. The process is complicated. College costs are astronomical. Students are more stressed than ever before. What can parents do to help their teens cope with stress, and at the same time, help them cope with the college prep pressure cooker? In a recent study, almost half of the students recently surveyed were chronically stressed: stressed about school, grades and activities. For today’s students who are looking forward to college, they also face the stress that comes with the anticipated admission. Though parents are essential to the process, they can ease this stress if they avoid being overly involved with the college prep requirements. The first and most crucial role that a parent should play is as an advisor. While parents should let their teens take the lead in the college planning process, parents should be encouraging.
“The college application process can be highly stressful for students,” says Susan Marrs, director of college counseling at The Seven Hills School in Cincinnati. Because their accomplishments will be judged by people they’ve never met, students can often feel vulnerable and overwhelmed, Marrs adds. Parents can help their teens by being supportive and being a sounding board as their teen works through the college process, says Dana Rolander at Midwest College Consulting. “But students should take the lead in managing the process,” she says. Because the college prep process can be complicated, parents should do what they can to learn about the process, the financial implications and the study path that students need to know to get
32
CINCINNATIPARENT.COM I August 2019
to college. “The overwhelming majority of colleges consider students’ grades in college preparatory classes as the most important factor in the application review,” Rolander says. “This is followed by overall GPA, the strength of the curriculum, ACT or SATs, and the personal statement essay.”
Parents should find out information on their financial options for funding college. College debt is a huge issue, and more parents are asking how to help their kids avoid debt by addressing the issue of college affordability with their teen. Right now, 80% of colleges accept more than 50% of their applicants and use generous financial and merit-based aid. “Sometimes, colleges with higher sticker prices may end up being more affordable,” Rolander says.
College is about learning: learning new things, learning to live independently and discovering the kind of person your teen will be. Roalnder says that the college search process gives students a chance to become more independent, exercising decisionmaking power over their future. Colleges want students to do well and to provide them with the tools they need to do it. Teens committed to going to college want the same things, too.
