Parent's Night Out I love every issue of Indy’s Child, but this month’s issue is really speaking to me. I’m digging this issue because of an article we included about date-night ideas. You see, on August 8, my husband and I will have been married 10 years. Ten years! Yes, a double-digit anniversary is a big deal, and it is definitely worthy of a big-deal trip to somewhere fun and far away (and kid-free). But, because we are parents with jobs and responsibilities and things around the house that need to be fixed, a big anniversary trip just wasn’t in the cards this year. That doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate a decade of marriage with some adults-only fun, though.

That’s where “8 Date Night Ideas” on page 26 comes in. There are lots of places around Indy where parents can have fun WITH kids… but this article is for the times when you want to do something fun WITHOUT kids. As for me, it’s now just a matter of trying to decide where to go. Do my husband and I want to relive our childhood and play Pac-Man at an adults-only arcade? Throw some axes at a target? Create some art and drink some wine? There are so many options! Where do you go when you want to spend time away from the kids? Shoot me an email at nicolesipe@indyschild.com and send me your ideas!

PARENTING IN THE KIDWEST

WORDS BY RIANE KONC

Soccer Goals I never played soccer. Not even as a little kid. Soccer is the one sport I don’t understand. It’s also, ironically, the first sport my daughter wanted to try. I want to feel useful, like I can answer questions or help her practice. But when she asks me a question about soccer, what she doesn’t understand is that everything I know about soccer, I actually learned from watching her play.

So if you ask me, here are the complete rules to soccer, which I have gleaned from watching a preschool soccer class. 1. No hands. This rule is actually extremely optional. 2. Soccer is mainly about running in circles with a swarm of your friends and screaming. The ball is also optional.

4. If you insist on scoring, you must do it in the opponent’s goal. 5. An important soccer move everyone should learn is the one where you discover that there’s a trampoline behind all of the soccer equipment in the gym and you go jump on that instead of actually playing soccer, the thing your parents are paying for you to do. 6. One of the best power moves in soccer is called the “sit on your ball and pick your nose while Coach Amy is talking.” It’s pretty self-explanatory. 7. The biggest prize in soccer is not nailing an assist, scoring a goal, or even winning the game. It’s about knowing that you did your best. Just kidding! The biggest prize in soccer is getting a sticker on your hand at the end.

3. Soccer is more about the concept of “scoring” or “passing” than it is about actually “scoring” or “passing.” It’s a very intellectual pursuit. Again, to be clear: No one in the history of soccer has successfully passed or scored.

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY TAYLOR NEWTON, INTERN, THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

Pre-K to the Big Day As a parent, sending your child to kindergarten can feel scary. But as daunting as it is to see the big yellow school bus take your little one off to kindergarten, try calming your child’s transition anxiety (and yours!) with four tips provided by Susan Michal, the director of early childhood education at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.

1. Visit the new kindergarten room.

4. Make school a family affair.

This allows your student to get comfy with where they will be learning during the school year. It is their opportunity to see all the fun new games and toys they will get to experience. Visiting the classroom can also help alleviate fears your child may have about navigating the “big kid” school, such as: What hallway do I take? Where do I get off the bus? An early trip will help you map that out together.

To really soothe those fears, get involved. Know what your child is learning, and practice those skills at home. “This shows your child that you value their work at school,” Michal says.

2. Meet the teacher. While visiting the classroom, meet the teacher. This is an opportunity to get to know the person who will be spending a lot of time with your child. Ask to exchange contact information so the teacher can share your child’s work. Be honest with the new teacher about your concerns.

3. Network with other parents and introduce kids before the first day. Introducing your child to some of the other students before class starts can be a helpful way to ease the jitters. Having a new buddy can make the new school less scary. Networking isn’t a bad idea for parents, either. Having a support system of parents and caregivers in the same boat can alleviate your worries.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

Listen to their day, and find out what new thing they learned to create meaningful conversation. Whether it is writing the alphabet, numbers or anything new, just ask.

To keep your new student excited, create an ongoing mural of celebrations for the house. Start with a smiling picture of your child. Every time your child learns something new or makes a new friend, celebrate by adding a picture, note or drawing to commemorate those accomplishments. This will be a proud moment for you and an exciting one for them.

If you’re on a quest for an adventure, our third largest park should be on your radar. At Southeastway, you can find a trail – there are 5 miles of it – that will send you on an immediate journey through the 80 acres of forests of this environmental education park. Don’t forget to look for the iconic Elbow Tree. The Benefits of Year-Round Swim Lessons

The physical and mental benefits abound Participating in yearround swim lessons offers a multitude of benefits for children. Here are just some of the reasons why you should take the plunge and sign up your child!

Learn vital safety and drowning prevention skills. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 5 people who die from drowning are children under the age of 14. While these numbers are tragic, the problem is preventable, says Lindsay Thayer, owner of Aqua-Tots Swim Schools. “Our program is designed to train children to be safe in and around the water,” Thayer says. “According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children enrolled in a consistent swim program have a 88% reduced risk of drowning. Our swim program focuses on safety skills, such as getting to your back to float, finding your way back to the wall, proper breath control, and rolling from front to back to rest and get air.”

Reduce stress and increase happiness.

“Swimming has been shown to convert stress into muscle relaxation, and to promote the growth of new brain cells,” Thayer says. “When swimming, blood flow to the brain increases, therefore boosting mood and sharpening focus.” What more can we say? An active child is a happy child!

Increase confidence and build stronger social skills. “Children enrolled in group lessons develop social skills by interacting with other children,” Thayer says. “The children end up encouraging each other, supporting and learning from one another through observing and leading by example.”

It’s fun! Through year-round swimming, kids create positive relationships and happy memories. “Our swim coaches know all of their kiddos by name,” Thayer says. “They build real relationships with their students, which makes our lessons more fun and impactful.” Keep your kids healthy and happy with year-round swim lessons. BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASICS

Ease into the transition and set your child up for a successful school year WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

IT HAS BEEN SAID BEFORE THAT ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END, AND SUMMER VACATION IS NO EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE. AS SUMMER IS WINDING DOWN, YOUR MIND MAY BE SHIFTING TO ALL THINGS BACKTO-SCHOOL RELATED. FOR SOME, THE SHIFT FROM THE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER TO A MORE STRUCTURED SCHEDULE IS A WELCOME CHANGE; FOR OTHERS, THE THOUGHT CAN BE OVERWHELMING.

To help set you and your family up for a successful school year, we asked Jennifer Sproull, a mom from Zionsville, to share some of the ways she helps make the back-to-school transition as smooth as possible for her family. Because who better to give tips than a parent who’s been through the experience many times?

What are some things you have incorporated over the years to help make a successful transition back to school? Usually a week or two before school starts, we start slowly working back to earlier bedtimes to make sure they are ready to wake up in time to catch the bus. We also take a couple days to get school supplies, clothes, organize backpacks and lunchboxes, and discuss what the first week and new routine will look like for each child.

What advice do you have for parents sending their children to school for the first time who are worried about the transition? Talk to your child about what to expect with new routines, teachers and classmates. If you have an opportunity to take the child to grab ice cream or a special meal together, to let them ask questions and share any concerns, I think that is nice, too. Let them know it is OK to be nervous, but remind them of all the fun things they will get to do. Try to find a couple good books to read together (such as The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn).

How do you get your children on a routine? The best way to get your child on a routine is to maintain a relaxed routine throughout the summer.

18

INDYSCHILD.COM I August 2019

We enroll them in a few camps to remind their bodies what a routine looks like and we also keep a bedtime during the week (just a little more relaxed) so they don't struggle with getting enough sleep.

Any other parenting tips? Trust what works for your family. Change is harder for some kids than others, so having lots of conversations about what is coming can be helpful. My kids thrive on routine, so making sure we start earlier bedtimes a week before definitely helps. My number-one tip is to give your kids enough space in the first week to be tired, and maybe even a little crabby. Know that they are getting used to new rules, teachers and classmates, and need a safe space to not have it all together. From anxiety and fear of the unknown, to excitement about seeing friends and classmates, back-to-school time can be filled with a wide range of emotions. It’s important to validate their concerns, but also keep focusing on the positive.

Cub Scouting: It’s a Family Affair This Greenwood family says Boy Scouts of America is an important part of their lives

how she is in Scouting because she loves being a Scout. She looks forward to every meeting and every activity, fully prepared to participate. She is the kid who is listening intently because she loves being where she is.

As a child, Ken Koziol remembers having many great experiences in Cub Scouts, including one memorable camping trip with his dad. Years later, when his son, Alex, was in first grade, Koziol happened to see a sign for Cub Scout recruiting night in his area. He knew he wanted his son to have the same special experiences that he did growing up. “I knew right away that we had to go,” says Koziol, who lives in Greenwood with his wife and six children. “We have been active in Pack 245 ever since.” Koziol’s daughter, Emily, joined Boy Scouts of America after seeing all of the neat projects and activities that her brother Alex was doing. “She saw that girls could join and knew she really wanted to,” Koziol says. Now, the Koziols enjoy Scouting as a family and have racked up many achievements. They shared their Scouting experience with Indy’s Child.

What is it about Scouting that made you think it would be a good fit for your family?

won't get anywhere else. They make new friends, learn self-worth as well as working as a team, they learn to set goals and achieve them, they learn how to interact well with adults, and they learn outdoor skills. Most of all, they participate in a variety of activities that are fun, keep them active, and help them mature into responsible human beings.

Tell us about Alex’s and Emily’s accomplishments as Scouts. KK: In 2018, Alex was one of the top popcorn sellers in the whole council for our annual fundraiser. Alex did more than strive to obtain

prizes for his efforts. He knew that he was "helping his Pack to do more adventures," which was part of his pitch. He liked introducing himself to new people and explaining what it means to support Scouting. The ability to speak to adults in an educated manner is only learned through experience, and he mastered it through this experience. I am really proud of him for his perseverance, his approach to learning and his achievement of the goals he set. Emily has followed in her brother's footsteps since joining Scouts, but once she was in she has been a trailblazer. I am especially proud of

Her first summer camping trip was in June at Camp Kikthawenund, and she was one of 10 girls at camp, but the only girl from Pack 245. To her, that was no problem. She made new friends, was excited for every activity, and was the leader of expeditions to capture a couple dozen frogs in her free time. She even hiked back to the "rock climbing wall" twice during free time because she wanted to ring the bell at the top of the wall. When she finally reached the top, the camp counselors said she was only the second girl to accomplish it — and I saw no boys do so when I was there!

How has Scouting brought you closer together as a family? KK: There is no better way to become closer than to experience things together like we do in Scouting. We look forward to that one night each week to do new fun activities, and to those special activities like camping, selling popcorn, building pinewood derby cars together and trips that we take as Scouts. With Boy Scouts of America, we can go on adventures as a family that are unique compared to any other childhood experiences. Cub Scouting is a hands-on way for our family to watch our children mature physically, mentally and morally.

6 PlayDates That Aren’t Just for Kids Need some play date ideas that adults can enjoy, too? We’ve got you covered! WORDS BY LESLIE A. BAILEY

As parents and caregivers, it can be difficult to find time to keep the children fed/engaged/socialized/ insert all the things here, while also maintaining our own sense of identity — or at least the ability to have a pleasant conversation with another adult. But play dates are a perfect opportunity to do all of the above.

Park Conservatory has a wide range of activities for all ages. Though you’re welcome to enjoy the conservatory on your own (it’s free admission for ages 2 and under), pre-registration is required for most activities, so plan your play date accordingly.

The Urban Chalkboard

Holliday Park

6363 Spring Mill Rd., Indianapolis

Consider scheduling your next get-together at a more intimate location at a place where the kids can have fun while the adults get the quality time (and maybe even the hot cup of coffee — finally!) we deserve.

The Little Village Playroom 9850 N. Michigan Rd., Carmel

thelittlevillageplayroom.com At The Little Village Playroom, parents and caregivers can enjoy free WiFi and coffee while the kids free play or join one of the days scheduled activities, such as arts and crafts or a dance party. Bring your own food, drinks and snacks so there’s no need to interrupt the fun — now that’s what we call a productive play date.

Be sure to bring your socks —they’re required for children and adults.

Tarkington Park 44 W 40th St., Indianapolis

Kid City at Greenwood Community Center 100 Surina Way, Greenwood

Local Spotlight: The Can Lady Project

One local woman is helping schools by recycling and educating What is Your Safety in Numbers Project?

Mary Stumpp was inspired to help her community 12 years ago by doing something simple: recycling. She founded The Can Lady Project, an Indianapolis nonprofit, which has so far collected almost 10 million cans. Stumpp explains to Indy’s Child how she started this project, and why she uses it to educate local youth.

If you live on an alley, you need to also have your house numbers there. Because if your house is on fire or someone is breaking into the back and first responders come up the alley looking for your house, they don’t know which one is yours unless you have the house numbers. It is really important. So, we stamp numbers out of aluminum cans because they don’t rust, attach them to a cedar board, and then we sell them. It is a great way to reuse cans and they are pretty. The kids love making them. The Can Lady’s favorite word is participation.

What is The Can Lady Project? It is an effort to demonstrate the value of recycling to kids in the community in hopes of getting them to recycle. I collect aluminum cans, sell them for scrap and use all the money to fund grants for teachers in public schools. So, if the schools give me enough cans, they get iPads, rugs, books and things like that.

What inspired this project? There’s a lot of little things. I could sit around, do nothing and complain, or I could get up and do something to get money in the hands of teachers and teach kids about recycling. As more people became involved and it became more of a project instead of just something for me to do, it became The Can Lady Project!

Why did you decide to raise money for Indianapolis schools? I was talking to a little friend in second grade at the same time that property taxes in my neighborhood were soaring. His class was going to do an overnight [field trip] and some of the kids couldn’t afford the fees, and I thought that was ridiculous. I don’t have children of my own, so this is my way to help. Getting them involved is part of the solution to help with environmental problems, too.

What are some items you’ve purchased for schools? A lot of iPads for classrooms, reading nooks this past school year — little areas often under staircases where students can go and read or get some private tutoring or just hang out that is a little quieter than the classroom. We have purchased a bunch of basketballs for a school, too. It is about little paperwork for teachers and positive reinforcement while learning to recycle.

To help with The Can Lady Project — to drop off donations or purchase a Safety in Numbers product, which is tax deductible — visit thecanladyproject.org.

SPECIAL NEEDS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Making a Smooth Transition Back to School Tips for easing back into the routine when you have a child with special needs How do you help make the back-to-school transition a smooth one? Both of my children are creatures of habit, especially Jackson. We try to maintain a schedule throughout the summer that somewhat mirrors the school year. It may be simple things like waking up, getting dressed, brushing teeth and eating breakfast. If we start the day like every other, it saves us frustration on his part.

Is the transition difficult for your children?

The thought of heading back to school can bring on a lot of emotions for children and parents alike. For some, the transition from summer to school with a new schedule, friends and teacher is exciting. For others, the thought of so much change at once can be anxiety provoking — especially for kids with special needs.

34

INDYSCHILD.COM I August 2019

To help you relieve some of those back-to-school jitters, Amanda Moore — CEO of the Angelman Syndrome Foundation — offers tips that she implements with her twin sons, Baden and Jackson. Two years ago, Jackson was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder with symptoms such as seizures, severe developmental delays and sleep issues.

With Angelman Syndrome, you tend to get very overwhelmed with change and new surroundings. We talk to the boys about what to expect and try to get them excited. We remind them of their friends they will get to see again, and the activities they loved last year. We also allow Jackson to be Jackson. If he has a meltdown, we work hard not to let it rattle us. We do our best to take inventory of why it may have happened, and work to not do it again. For example, we realized if Jackson doesn’t get a bath every night, his evening is off and then his morning is a disaster. The solution? Nightly baths.

How do you relieve backto-school jitters? School never really ends in the Moore household. We work hard to implement the same schedules and educational activities into our days. We also know that the first week will be challenging and that no matter how much we prepare Jackson for a change in schedule, he still struggles. We have learned not to jump to a “this is the end of the world” conclusion. Every child has different struggles, no matter if they have special needs or not. Both of our kids experience the jitters. We make sure they know this is OK and try to be there to support them and work through it.

Is there anything else you would like to share? One thing I pray for every day is that parents are teaching their kids the importance of being kind. As a parent to a child with special needs, my greatest fear is that another kid will not be kind to Jackson because he can’t communicate, or because when he gets excited he f laps, and it comes across as hitting. As we prepare our kids for school, the best lesson we can teach them is to be kind to anyone they encounter. This will help them to be successful not only in school, but in life.

TEENS & TWEENS

WORDS BY REBECCA HILL

The College Prep Pressure Cooker How to help your teen navigate this stressful time Preparing for college is a pressure cooker of emotions for students. The process is complicated. College costs are astronomical. Students are more stressed than ever before. What can parents do to help their teens cope with stress, and at the same time, help them cope with the college prep pressure cooker? In a recent study, almost half of the students recently surveyed were chronically stressed: stressed about school, grades and activities. For today’s students who are looking forward to college, they also face the stress that comes with the anticipated admission. Though parents are essential to the process, they can ease this stress if they avoid being overly involved with the college prep requirements.

38

INDYSCHILD.COM I August 2019

The first and most important role that a parent should play is as an advisor. Parents should be partners in this process, says Mona Bowe, president of the Indiana Association for College Admissions Counseling. “Parents know their sons and daughters better than we do and can help them identify, from a different perspective, what colleges could be a good fit,” Bowe says. “But at the end of the day, this process should be owned by the student.” Because most teens have never had to make such a significant decision like this, parents should be encouraging. “They should encourage students to step out of their comfort zone and learn how to grow from adversity, teaching their young adults how to learn from mistakes and shortcomings,” Bowe says.

Because the college prep process can be complicated, parents should do what they can to learn about the process, the financial implications, and the study path that students need to know to get to college. Parents should understand the high school curriculum, says Amy McVeigh, founder of Smart College Selection. If a student is leaning towards a discipline like STEM, parents should learn what classes it takes to get that diploma or to get into a college science program. Parents should also find out information on their financial options for funding college. College debt is a huge issue, and more parents are addressing the issue of college affordability with their teens. A need-based student might be able to afford a private college at an affordable cost, especially since many private colleges are discounting their tuition now by 53%, McVeigh says. So, even though state colleges like Purdue University are a great option, “Many students are getting private tuition for a similar cost,” McVeigh says. “It’s important for parents to understand this.”

Finally, parents can play a crucial role in helping their teens choose a college that is the right fit for them. “Choosing schools simply on name recognition or rankings, without taking all of this under consideration, leads to less than stellar college experiences,” Bowe says. Many students will f luctuate between thinking that they aren’t good enough for college or that they won’t get into the right school. “Students should know that if they want to go to college, that they can go to college,” McVeigh says. What they need to figure out is the basics: who they are, what they really want in a college, and where they could do well. Then, they should look at the schools that can help them fill these needs. College is about learning: learning new things, learning to live independently and discovering the kind of person they will be. Colleges want students to do well and to give them the tools they need to do it. Teens committed to going to college want the same things, too.
