HIDDEN GEMS

WORDS BY STEFFY MCCOURT

10 Pins 10 Pins is a hidden gem hiding in a hidden gem city itself: Franklin, Indiana. The bowling alley and arcade offers duckpin bowling, which is similar to regular bowling, except that everything is miniaturized. This actually proves to be quite perfect for kids! The bowling balls are more manageable, the lanes are shorter and the game moves more quickly. 10 Pins has a rustic look to it: You wouldn’t be too terribly surprised to see John Wayne saunter in for a quick game. Despite its rusticity, the bowling alley has the modern elements you expect from an entertainment center, including a jukebox with a good mix of music to please all ages. The technology for each lane is also very fun, especially when celebrating strikes!

delivered to your party while on the lanes. When the kids get tired of bowling, there is a pretty cool arcade area in the back, which features a blend of old and new games. Afterward, be sure to give yourself time to walk around the square. It’s chock-full of bustling restaurants, coffee houses and ice cream shops.

Autumn Days are Here Again While putting together this September issue of Indy’s Child, it was hard not to get really excited for fall. Not just because fall is my favorite season. (Bring on the autumn skies and apple pies!) But also because I was reminded of all the fun things that happen in the fall that I look forward to each year. The family hikes to see the changing leaves. The fall festivals. And — yes, I’m saying it — the return of the pumpkin spice latte. Ah, fall. I’m so glad you’re back. In my family, we’re already making our fall break plans. Where do we want to go to spend our precious few vacation days enjoying the season this year? It’s a question that has many answers, because there are just so many places to explore in the Midwest. If you’re also wondering where to go and what to do, then turn to “Fall Break Road Trip Destinations” on page 38. We offer three road-trip-worthy places that are great for a quick trip out of town. All three places will have you feelin’ all the fall feelings.

And if you’re staying more local this fall, you have lots of options, too! Check out “Fall Fun in Indy” on page 22 for some ideas for enjoying the season right here in Central Indiana. From festivals to corn mazes, train rides to apple picking, there are lots of ways to celebrate locally. Fall also means the return of football season. We were lucky to score an interview with Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who opened up about family life and moving to the Midwest. Check out “Fielding a Family” on page 14, and cheer on Buckner and the rest of the Indianapolis Colts when they begin their season on September 12! Happy fall, y’all!

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY NICK JOHNSON, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

Fall into the Exciting World of Art The breeze is crisp, leaves are acquiring beautiful new hues and a spooky feeling lingers in the air. Autumn is upon us! The chilling weather means more time spent inside. For children, this can be especially frustrating. With lots of energy to expend and limited outlets to do so, both children and parents can easily become distressed.

For a more hands-on experience, kids can attend an art workshop held right in the museum. Visiting Artist Deonna Craig leads workshops focused on the natural world as a source of artistic inspiration. Children will have a blast learning about various minerals as they create their own gemstone artwork to take home. The smiles will be abundant as the kids have fun learning that art rocks. Not a fan of rocks? Visiting Artist Koda Witsken leads an art workshop that focuses on animal color-based defense systems. Amazement is guaranteed as kids learn how animals use color to ward off predators in the wild.

Don’t fret! There is an elusive, yet obvious, solution. A solution that is both fun and beneficial. That solution is... art! Art is not only exciting, it’s also very engaging. Depending on the activity, young ones can recruit multiple senses (or even all of them) to accomplish their vision. This supports creativity and encourages learning. Art can promote motor skills through detailed drawing, careful cutting and precise painting — all of which require tactful coordination. Art can give children something to be proud of, something that they brought to life. Art can be found around every corner in the world’s largest children’s museum. Kids bend over backwards when they come close to the colossal 43-foot glass tower. The famous Dale Chihuly Fireworks of Glass installation is definitely a conversation starter!

The fall art fun doesn’t have to stop once the museum visit is over. Make beautiful paper leaves at home. All you need are paper, scissors, coloring utensils and some imagination. Simply draw an outline of any kind of leaf on the paper. Then, carefully cut along the lines to free the leaf. Lastly, color and have fun with it. Voila, a beautiful, fridge-worthy leaf! Ask the kiddos how they think the piece was made or what it represents. Discover how art changed the lives of 18 Black Indiana-based artists with the new display titled Stories from Our Community: The Art of Protest. The display highlights how art evokes emotion and action within the Black Lives Matter

Fielding a Family

Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner opens up about family life and moving to the Midwest. DeForest Buckner moved to the Hoosier state from the Bay Area of Northern California after the Indianapolis Colts acquired the veteran defensive tackle in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. One might imagine such a move could pose unexpected new challenges, but Buckner takes the culture shock in stride. “Indiana has definitely gotten to feel like home,” he says. “After we bought our house, the neighbors came over the first day we moved in, and some people came over with gift baskets and things like that. We were kind of in shock because we weren’t used to that.” The Hoosier hospitality, he says, has been a big help in allowing him and his young family to adjust. “We didn’t have any family or friends when we first got here,” Buckner

focus on ball and to really provide for our family. That’s why I appreciate her so much.”

says. “And [the help from neighbors] definitely has been heartwarming for us.” But for his very young son, a major perk of living in the Circle City has been the proximity to family-friendly sites like the Indianapolis Zoo. “He loves seeing all the animals,” Buckner says. “My wife recently took him to The Children’s Museum. Now that he’s really

running around and everything, he’s been doing those different activities. She sent me a bunch of pictures a couple days ago of them there, and he’s been really enjoying it.” And for the parents? “Obviously there are a lot of great steakhouses out here, so when the wife and I get a chance to really go out and have our own free time, we usually go to a nice steak dinner or something like that,” he says. Having a balance of work responsibilities and being a new dad has come about mostly due to the support of his wife, Buckner says. “My wife is amazing. We’ve got another one [our son] to think about, which is fine with me, but she really gives me the time I need to

However, when the pandemic was at its zenith, Buckner, like many of us, found himself able to spend more time with family. “It seems weird, but the pandemic actually helped me get to be around more because meetings had become virtual,” he says. “OTAs being cancelled last year helped me because I was able to stay home for the first three months of my son’s life. I was there to help my wife in the middle of the night when he was crying or to change his diapers. Gaining that connection early on was very crucial for me as a father.” Adjusting to Indiana winters has been another story. “My son loves being outside. So, it has been a challenge in the winter when it gets cold and it’s snowing,” Buckner says. “My wife would bundle him up and take him out in snow jackets and stuff. I mean, he gets out there, and his face is all red and he’s freezing. So, we really couldn’t take him outside a lot.” Otherwise, moving to Indiana has been a nice change of scenery for the Buckners. “It’s a beautiful place to raise a family instead of being in the middle of everything in the Bay Area like we were,” Buckner says. “There is a lot more space for us to venture off to.”

Unlock Your Child’s Potential at NinjaZone They’ll cultivate kindness

Kids have an amazing amount of energy. With that energy comes an amazing amount of potential. For parents who have been looking for a way to channel their child’s energy and have fun at the same time, NinjaZone is a great way to unlock that potential, and turn energy into ambition — one awesome kid at a time. NinjaZone offers a combination of gymnastics, martial arts, obstacle training and parkour, available to all kids no matter their ability level. All these different skills work together to make up the hot new sport of ninja. Being a ninja is pretty cool, but NinjaZone is about way more than that. Here are six big benefits of enrolling your child in NinjaZone.

They’ll gain character NinjaZone offers children early positive experiences with sport that transcends the gym. “We care about our kids, and we want to build leaders,” says Casey Wright, NinjaZone CEO. “We want to give them an athletic foundation, but we also want to give them a character foundation. At the same time, we’re teaching them to flip and jump and all the cool stuff, we’re also teaching them respect and kindness, and everything a parent would want for their kids.”

Lessons in being an active, contributing member of society are an integral part of the NinjaZone program. Throughout the year, NinjaZone locations participate in #NinjasGiveBack campaigns to support the needs of their communities. These have included sleeping bag drives for local shelters, food collection for pantries and volunteer work.

The NinjaZone curriculum was developed by master gymnasts and coaches, health professionals, PhDs and early childhood experts, thus creating coaching strategies, skill progressions and a class structure that is developmentally appropriate based on age. During each class, coaches break skills into a series of progressions. These progressions not only allow coaches to properly correct body placement and movement inconsistencies, but it leads children to a more in-depth understanding of foundational skills.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

INDYSCHILD.COM I September 2021

One of NinjaZone’s core values is, “We believe in the benefit of fitness.” That philosophy carries over into each class session. Making healthy choices and staying active are natural side effects of the fun, yet challenging classes at NinjaZone.

They’ll develop motor skills

Also, class sizes are kept small so that children can feel connected

with their coach, and the coach can get to know each child personally. Staff members work to build each child’s confidence so they can try new things, fail in a safe environment, and then ultimately reach new heights.

They’ll hone their athletic skills

They’ll learn discipline NinjaZone curriculum takes the coordination and flexibility from gymnastics, the discipline from martial arts, the strength and agility from obstacle training, and the creativity from parkour to create one holistic sport. While children have the freedom to learn in different ways, coaches teach strict lessons of kindness, respect, selflessness and courage.

With all the recent research regarding the detrimental effects of single sports specialization, it’s more important than ever that children participate in a variety of different sports and activities. Ninja classes promote foundational movements skills, core strength, coordination, flexibility and above all, confidence. “A lot of sports have forgotten why we put kids in in the first place. We didn’t forget,” Wright says. “We want them to be active, we want them to sweat, we want them to learn skills, we want them to learn team building, but more than anything, we want them to be great humans.”

Top 5 Questions about Sugary Drinks How necessary is it for kids to drink sports drinks after sports practices and games? What about replacing electrolytes?

Top 10, a coalition of local and national organizations committed to improving the health of Indianapolis residents, has launched a “Rethink Your Drink” campaign to encourage people to drink fewer sugary drinks. Here are the most commonly asked questions about sugary beverages and ways to reduce your family’s sugar intake.

Why should I be concerned with the amount of sugary drinks my family consumes? Decades ago, sugary drinks were often a treat, something consumed only once in a while. In today’s culture, sugary drinks are everywhere and are often consumed multiple times per day. In fact, sugary drinks now account for almost half of the added sugar in our diets. Some children are consuming more than 60 teaspoons of added sugar per day (from food and drinks), which is 10 times the recommended amount of 6 teaspoons per day.

All of this sugar is creating health problems like obesity, cavities and the early onset of type 2 diabetes. It also increases the risk of heart disease later in life.

What are some easy first steps that my family can take to begin cutting out sugary beverages from our diet? There are some easy ways to “Rethink Your Drink.” 1. Help your kids learn to take a refillable water bottle with them when they leave home. They won’t need to purchase a sugary drink when they become thirsty. 2. Offer water instead of sugary drinks at sports practices or kids’ parties. 3. Flavor water with fruit slices to create more taste and excitement 4. Choose healthier vending and menu options when away from home

18

INDYSCHILD.COM I September 2021

What are some sugary drinks that I might not be aware are unhealthy options? Many of us naturally think of soda when we think of sugar-sweetened beverages. But fruit juice, lemonade, sports drinks, sweet tea and many coffees also contain high amounts of sugar. Check the nutrition label for ‘added sugars’ and choose products with no added sugars. • A small 6-oz., fruit-f lavored juice box contains about 4 tsps of sugar • A 20-oz. soda contains about 15 tsps of sugar • A 20-oz. sports drink contains about 9 tsps of sugar Remember, the maximum recommended sugar intake from both food and drinks is 6 teaspoons per day.

It is not necessary or recommended that children drink sports drinks during or after physical activity. Most people do not exercise long enough or hard enough to need the replacement of electrolytes; and no one needs that much sugar in one drink (around 35 grams or 9 teaspoons of sugar in a typical 20-ounce sports drink). If you are concerned about your child needing extra electrolytes, snacks such as oranges or bananas, or drinks such as unsweetened coconut water or plain low-fat milk replenish electrolytes. Tap water has electrolytes, too.

My child loves soda and sweet drinks. Would replacing these with diet versions be a better alternative? Diet sodas and other drinks are sweetened with artificial sweeteners. Although artificial sweeteners have zero calories, they increase children’s and adults’ preference for sweet food and drink. Taste preferences develop during childhood, so serving foods that are not too sweet can help kids develop healthy habits for the rest of their life. Having an occasional drink with artificial sweeteners can be a way to reduce sugar intake, but studies have found that consuming a lot of artificial sweeteners is associated with higher risk for type 2 diabetes, weight gain and a diet low in nutritious foods. Water and low-fat milk are the best drinks for kids because they do not have added sugar and promote healthy growth.

Living the Dream as Foster Parents Parents decide to make their house into a foster home for myriad reasons. Some want to help kids who need loving homes. Others see foster families at some point in their lives and decide to give it a try.

That approach has helped them put their role as foster parents into perspective. “The goal is to stand in the gap, not stand in the way,” Sydney said. “You’re just standing in the gap until the family is ready to be reunited. I want to be able to provide a peace of mind to these parents. I don’t want you to go to bed worried about where your kid’s at. They’re in a safe place, we’re taking care of them, and they’re going to come home when you’re ready and when they’re able.”

Jenna Dressler always wanted to foster. No, really. “That’s how I always envisioned building a family… through foster care, and not necessarily adoption and fostering children who needed temporary homes,” she said. “We got thrown into it a little faster than we were anticipating. We were thinking I’d graduate college and have a job before we did. Sydney’s the reason why we got propelled so quickly.” Sydney, her husband, used to work at Adult & Child Health as a skills development specialist on the School-Based team, so he was familiar with the agency’s Therapeutic Foster Care program. You could say it was a match made in heaven.

Foster family, fast and furious While Jenna always wanted foster children, Sydney made it happen – sort of – but very quickly.

He worked closely with a child during his time at A&C, and eventually brought home the boy, 8 years old at the time, as a kinship placement. “I watched one of my kiddos there bounce around from foster home to foster home within just a few months of each other,” Sydney said. “He had been in the system a long time. We realized that’s where our calling was and we needed to fill that gap for him. We were still within a year of being married, bought a house, brought an 8-year-old home as a kinship placement. So we definitely like to do everything all at once.” Eventually, Sydney and Jenna married and landed full-time jobs. They’ve since fostered three other children, all infants. After the kinship placement, the Dresslers were respite parents for a while before opting to foster infants.

INDYSCHILD.COM I September 2021

They foster one child at a time, because that’s all their twobedroom house and work schedules will easily accommodate.

Building relationships with biological families Of all the rewarding aspects being a foster parent provides, Jenna said she most enjoyed the positive relationships she’s developed with the biological parents. “Even though COVID has been terrible in a lot of ways doing virtual visits, I was able to start building relationships with the kiddos’ parents more easily because we had a platform while we were talking,” Jenna said. “We were very fortunate that our last two kiddos had parents who have been extremely open and gracious to having a relationship with us.”

Why you should foster Jenna wants to dispel the notion that parents will endure too much heartbreak when the kids return to their biological families. “When I sit here and think about the idea that we may not have known and loved the four children that we have, I can’t imagine not having the immense love we have for them,” she said. “There’s been a lot of grief, anxiety and hurt and things that come along with having the kiddos go home, but not loving them at all just wrecks me. It’s so worth it. You can struggle through that with your support system. Those kiddos need those relationships. They need that love. They need you.”

WORDS BY INDY PARKS STAFF

Indy Parks Breaks Ground on New Broad Ripple Park Family Center Superhero trainings, moonlight egg hunts, gingerbread house building. For the past two decades, the Broad Ripple Park Family Center has been a place for families to make memories that will last a lifetime. The space has served as a popular destination since it was built: first as a library, and then as a family center. Ever since opening its doors, the facility has welcomed and encouraged everyone to discover fitness, recreation, and activities with their family and friends. But it’s a bittersweet summer at Broad Ripple Park. If you’ve stopped by recently, you’ve seen people coming to the park for painting classes, dance classes, and the Summer Concert and Movie Series. You’ve also noticed the construction crews. The family center has been torn down to make room for something new. Back in 2019, after an exhaustive public input process, we shared plans for the park’s new family center, and we are thrilled that construction has started. The new facility will include a gymnasium and upgraded fitness areas. There will be an indoor walking track, group meeting space, multi- purpose rooms, and a

children’s play area. Construction is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2022, and our park staff is already dreaming up programs that make the most of this unique space. Part of our mission at Indy Parks is to connect communities by providing places and experiences that inspire healthy living. That emphasis on wellness is why we have partnered with Community Health Network to include a clinic within the new center, which will allow us to serve our neighbors in even bigger ways. The family center is only a piece of the Broad Ripple Park Master Plan, which sets aside dedicated space within the park for athletics, environmental education, and open areas to gather with friends. Read about the park’s master plan at broadrippleparkmasterplan.com. More than 300,000 people visit Broad Ripple Park each year, and we thought of them with every new idea we had for the family center and the park. We’re excited to update you throughout the construction process and to eventually invite you inside!

Family-friendly ways to celebrate the season.

S

22

ummer is slowly turning into fall, and the number of fun activities and events for families is not slowing down one bit. Indiana really shines during this season — there are just so many ways to celebrate autumn with your family. Here are some great ideas to make the most of this wonderful season!

Go for a hike

Enjoy the changing colors by train

Pick apples

Indiana is at its most beautiful in the fall, and seeing the fall foliage on a train takes the fall feeling to a whole other level. Nickel Plate Express departs from Atlanta, Indiana, and offers themed train rides for families, and dinner rides for adults. Whitewater Valley Railroad’s Valley Flyer takes riders on a tour of Indiana’s Historic (and beautiful) canal town, Metamora. And if you’re up for a road trip into Ohio, Lebanon-Mason Monroe Railroad’s Turtle Creek Flyer runs through October and will take you through the picturesque countryside of Southwest Ohio.

There’s something about fall that makes you want to pick your own produce. Fortunately, there are plenty of U-pick opportunities in the area. Anderson Orchard in Mooresville is ripe for the picking in the fall, and their annual Apple Festival and Craft Fair on September 25 & 26 is an area favorite. Beasley’s Orchard in Danville opens their farm store and celebrates picking season on September 24. In the mood for a fall road trip? The Apple Works in Trafalgar is worth the drive.

INDYSCHILD.COM I September 2021

Take advantage of cooler temps by going on a family hike. Hague Road Nature Haven on the north side, Eagle Creek Park on the west side and Hummel Park on the south side are just some of the parks that offer easy hiking — some with paved trails — that are perfect for walking with young children.

Visit a pumpkin patch Watching your kids trudge across an orange-speckled field of pumpkins is a parental rite of passage! No matter where you’re located in Indy, you’ll find a place to pick the perfect pumpkin, including Tuttle Orchards in Greenfield, Stuckey Farm in Sheridan, Spencer Farm in Noblesville and many others!

Go for a bike ride Indy residents are fortunate to have many bike trails throughout this part of Central Indiana. Strap on your helmet and enjoy the changing leaves while pedaling along the Monon Trail, which stretches from the town of Sheridan in the north all the way to downtown Indianapolis. Other popular biking trails include the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Eagle Creek Trail and Fall Creek Trail.

Do a fall festival It just isn’t fall without festivals. Head to the Nappanee Apple Festival Sept. 16-19 for the 7-foot apple pie and stay for all of the family-friendly fun. History buffs will enjoy a visit from one of America’s most beloved presidents at Lincoln’s Lebanon and Civil War Reenactment Festival on September 24-26. And the Irvington Halloween Festival is October 23-30, with a week of east side celebrations of all-things Halloween.

Conquer a corn maze Indiana is the land of corn, so why not get a little corny this season? Get lost in Fortville’s Piney Acres corn maze, which is 8 acres of fun. Once you make it out of Conner Prairie’s corn maze, you can hitch a ride on the newly renovated 1859 Balloon Voyager and view the cornfield from above. And on the west side, Hogan Farms in Brownsburg offers a themed corn maze that exits at the pumpkin patch — the perfect spot to grab a pumpkin or two to take home!

Take a hayride Hayrides are a necessary part of fall. On select dates in October, take a haunted and historical ride on the Headless Horseman Hayride at Conner Prairie. On the north side, visit Kelsay Farms in Whiteland for hayrides and other fall fun this October.

Go trick-or-treating before Halloween Indy kids have it pretty great — there are tons of opportunities to trick-or-treat before the big night. Visit the Indianapolis Zoo in October for ZooBoo on October 6-31, where little ones can dress up in their favorite costumes and find treats around the park. Also in October, round up your cowpokes and saddle up for a spook-tacular ride through the The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis’s Frightful Frontier, and make your way through a spooky (or not-sospooky) haunted house to collect treats.

Top 5 Benefits of

Private Schools Here are reasons why parents are choosing the unique experience of this type of education. WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

f you’ve laid in bed with the words public, private, charter, Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia and more swimming through your head — you aren’t alone. For many parents, one of the biggest decisions to make is figuring out where to send their child to school, and with so many options it can feel very overwhelming. If you’re thinking about private school for your child, here are some of the things you should consider, and the unique benefits of a private school education.

I

26

INDYSCHILD.COM I September 2021

#1:

Smaller Classrooms

Typically, private schools will offer smaller classes, which means more opportunities for one-on-one time with the student and the teacher. In this environment, it may be easier for students to participate in class discussions, and have their questions answered as they arise. With fewer classmates, the teacher is also able to get to know the students strengths and weaknesses better than they may in a large classroom setting, and help to facilitate growth for the student on a more individual level. Smaller classes also can create more of a sense of community within the classroom and with peers.

#2:

#4:

Aligns with Personal Beliefs

A Strong Sense of Community

Some may choose a private school that aligns with their personal beliefs. There are many religions represented in the private school sector. In these schools, the students will receive excellent academic instruction in a faith-based environment that supports the values that are being taught at home.

#3: Exposure to the Arts and Extracurricular Activities Many private schools have a strong emphasis on the arts and offer their students exposure to a wide range of opportunities. With fewer students, there is a potential for more opportunities for the students to participate in the activities they would like to try.

Because of the smaller class sizes and school enrollment, a strong sense of community is developed within the school. There is an emphasis placed on the teacher and parent relationship with many opportunities for parents and teachers to connect throughout the year. This also helps the parents to be involved in their child’s education when they are at home, as they encourage them to learn and foster a relationship that values and encourages their education. In addition, parents are easily able to, and are encouraged to, participate in school activities and events. Many private schools also encourage students and families to serve in the community, extending the community feel outside of the building and into the neighborhood where the school is located. Some schools may even require their students to complete a certain number of community service hours.

#5: Provide an Enriched Education Another benefit of private schooling is that many schools will offer classes or courses that are unique to their school, with a focus not only on education, but also on the child as a whole. Character development, personal growth, respect, empathy, self-control and

wellness are just a few of the things that may be emphasized. In high school, they often will offer a wide variety of AP level courses, and encourage students to pursue a degree of choice upon completion of high school. Another plus is that private school students typically do very well on standardized tests and college entrance exams.

Finding the school that is the best fit for your child can feel like a daunting and overwhelming task. Be sure to visit the schools you are considering and ask questions that are pertinent to your family’s unique values, interests and priorities. Talk to friends and join online groups and communities for more personal information. And lastly, take a deep breath and find confidence in the fact that you know what’s best for your child, because nobody knows your child better than you do.

Charter Schools vs Private Schools Charter schools are another educational option that many parents consider for their children. Although charter schools and private schools share many similarities, there are also some differences between the two.

“Both options have similar classroom sizes, teachers' familiarity with students and families, and emphasis on academic attainment,” says Barb Richardson, director of advancement at Paramount Schools of Excellence, a charter with schools in the Brookside, Cottage Home and Englewood neighborhoods of Indy, as well as an online option. “A family can choose the school that best aligns with their child's needs or strengths. Both options offer parents a choice to their child's assigned neighborhood public school.”

However, unlike most private schools, charter schools are tuition-free. Charter schools are public schools, and they don’t require an admission process or entrance exam. These factors can be appealing to some parents who are looking for these options in a school for their child.

PARENTING

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

What I’ve Learned from My Teen My children will be returning to school in the fall. And while they are ready to go back, they do talk about the things they will miss. The relaxed schedule. The extra sleep. The snacks throughout the day. The ability to go on a family walk mid-day, or watch a show together.

This past year has been one that none of us ever could have anticipated or imagined. Words that weren’t part of our regular vocabulary, like masks, social distancing, toilet paper shortage, remote learning and Zoom gatherings became number-one topics of conversation.

We came into our homes and families gathered around the table for dinners, maybe for the first time in weeks. Games were taken off shelves, instruments were dusted off, and parents mulled over the difficult decision of whether to send their children to school online or in-person.

All the while, we wondered how this was affecting our children. How would they deal with this abrupt change in life? And for parents of tweens and teens, we suddenly found ourselves in situations where we were spending more time with them then we maybe have in years.

That has definitely been the case for my family.

30

INDYSCHILD.COM I September 2021

We made the decision to have our four children learn remotely, which means I have spent more time with my children than I usually would in this phase of life. And while this year has had its challenges, it has also been one of the greatest years for growth in our family. Our relationships have been stretched and they have grown. And in all of our time spent together at home, I have learned a lot about my tween and teens that I’m not sure I would have learned otherwise. And I believe they have learned a lot about themselves.

I’ve seen how they faced obstacles head on. I’ve seen how they have dealt with challenges as they have arisen. I’ve seen how they have grieved unexpected losses and closed chapters without goodbyes. And I have seen how they have risen to the occasion and tackled

things they have never dealt with before, like online schooling and visiting with friends outdoors in socially distanced circles.

They have missed things we never imagined them missing. But they have gained things we never anticipated, too. Our 15 and 13 year old daughters have had to navigate online schooling without Zoom classes or regular schedules. They are self-paced and attendance isn’t taken. They are learning skills that many don’t learn until college. Has it been easy? No. But they also get to sleep in and are incredibly proud of themselves when they get the grades they worked so hard for.

Our lives have slowed down tremendously this year. And as more people are being vaccinated and the world is slowly beginning to open back up, this is something I hope we take with us. I hope we choose the things we will participate in wisely. I hope my daughter will continue to keep her eyes up, and not begin to spend so much time looking down at her phone again. I hope to still hear the piano being played and that family dinners will continue to be prioritized. I also look forward to hearing my girls' laughter carry down the stairs as they giggle in their rooms with friends sleeping over.

I hope they carry what they have learned in this past year with them, and that they know they can face hard and unexpected obstacles, and rise to whatever challenges come their way. And I always hope they know how proud of them I am.

So very proud.

Helping Kids with Autism Make Friends Strategies to encourage social interaction.

interactions, as some children have very specific behavioral rigidities around highly preferred toys.

Relationships and friendships are important, and parents of children on the autism spectrum know that making friends isn’t always the easiest for some children on the spectrum. While it may not be easy, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

And lastly, do not assume your child knows what to say, or how to play. Supervise the play and be available to provide a model for appropriate language to use during interactions.

Ann Baloski, chief executive officer of Behavior Works ABA in Indianapolis, offers parents some suggestions on how to help facilitate and encourage these friendships.

What should parents consider when trying to help their children with autism make friends? Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) might not be as automatically inclined to seek out friendships as children who are not on the spectrum. When children with autism do get involved in peer play, they may do so in unexpected ways. For example, I have seen a child on the spectrum stand in front of another child during a game of tag, so that the other child accidentally runs directly into them. In this case, the manner in which the child interacts with peers often can be characteristically non-vocal. In therapy, we often must teach the words to use to support peer

36

INDYSCHILD.COM I September 2021

interactions. Words such as “Do you want to play with me?” Or “I want to play,” must be taught and reinforced, just like any other skill taught in therapy.

Play with children can be unpredictable. We have found that the more predictable you can make the experience, at least at first, the more success you will have. For example, playing games like Zingo with a few adults and children can create a safe environment of interaction, with a set of rules that are understood by both the ASD child and the peer playmates. Clearly, autism is a spectrum and these are general guidelines that may not be a perfect solution for all children on the spectrum.

What are some things parents can do to help facilitate friendships? It is important to provide frequent opportunities to interact with peers. It may be more helpful to have one to two familiar typical peers to interact with, as this helps the child know what is expected in play.

It is also helpful to set up the activity for success. For example, if your child loves to play with a marble tower, consider using this activity as one to share with a peer. You may want to consult with a professional about the specific ways to introduce peer sharing and

Relationships don’t form overnight, so be sure to give your child plenty of time and opportunity to learn how to interact and develop these relationships. Also, if your child is someone who needs structure and consistency, be sure to prepare them and talk about what they can expect during their time with their peers. Talk about what may happen and ways to deal with those things as they arise. And be sure to give both you and your child grace as you navigate the road to friendship.

Fall Break Road Trip Destinations Three great places to get out of town and enjoy the season.

Want to hit the road for fall break? These roadtrip-worthy destinations are perfect for families!

A few miles away from Santa Claus is Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, one of the three National Parks in Indiana. Pick up a junior rangers activity book at the memorial visitor center, then hike through the park and complete the activities while learning about our 16th president. As you explore the living historical farm, you’ll meet park rangers dressed in period clothing, performing activities typical of daily life in the 1820s. and leisurely train ride to experience southern Ohio’s fall colors.

Mackinac Island, Michigan Santa Claus, Indiana

Hocking Hills, Ohio If you are looking for a place where you’ll be surrounded by fall foliage, you will find it in Hocking Hills. Located in the southeastern region of Ohio, this area hits peak-season autumn glory right around fall break — typically the first couple of weeks of October. Drive through Hocking Hills State Park’s scenic byways, then stop and explore the area by foot to get an up-close look at the area’s natural beauty. Hocking Hills has seven major hiking trails, each with unique features to see and explore, including waterfalls, creeks and caves. Families can also enjoy outdoorsy adventures like zip lining, climbing and rappelling, horseback riding and more.

Fridays and weekends in October, hop a ride on the Hocking Valley’s Scenic Railway for the Fall Foliage tour, which will take you on a cozy

If the cooler temperatures are making you want to deck the halls, then Santa Claus, Indiana, should be on your destination list. As the name suggests, this southwest Indiana town is all Christmas, all the time. Treat your family to a cup of the famous frozen hot chocolate at Santa’s Candy Castle, and then visit the Santa Claus Museum & Village to write a letter to Santa.

But Santa Claus is much more than just Christmas. Thrills await you at Holiday World & Slashin’ Safari, the area’s largest amusement park. On weekends starting September 25 through October 31, enjoy the park’s Happy Halloween Weekends for fun Halloween shows and activities for kids, including trick-or-treating, corn mazes and hayrides.

Insiders know that fall is one of the best times to visit Mackinac Island: the crowds are fewer, and the forests surrounding the island are sporting picture-perfect hues of red, orange and gold. Plan to visit before the island ferry service ends for the season — typically at the end of October.

More than 80% of the island is preserved as a state park, and one of the best ways to see it is by foot or by bicycle. Mackinac Island State Park offers trails through

woods to see limestone formations, historic cemeteries, and local flora and fauna. Carriage rides are another popular mode of transportation on the island, and they’ll give you a behind-thescenes look into the neighborhoods of Mackinac Island residents who call the island their home.

No trip to Mackinac Island is complete without sampling some world-famous fudge at one of the seven fudge shops downtown. Mackinac Island shops make 10,000 pounds of fudge each day during peak tourist season, and if you’re lucky, you might even get to see it being made!
