Adventure Awaits

We’re just a month into the school year, and I’m already thinking about fall break plans. How can that be? Wasn’t I just saying how much I love backto-school time — and by extension, my children going back to school?

Yes, I was. And I still do.

But do you ever find yourself looking at photos of your children on your phone after they’ve gone to bed? And as you scroll through the photos, you smile while remembering the fun times you had? That was me a week ago. Even though it had been a long day, and I was relishing the time I had to myself while my kids were asleep in their rooms, I found myself scrolling through the photos on my phone, and remembering all of the fun we had during the summer. We had so much fun.

It made me think about fall break, and what fun adventures we might have awaiting us. We get a whole week off for fall break this year! Let the planning begin.

If you’re looking for somewhere to explore this fall break, we have some great ideas. Turn to “Fall Break Getaways” on page 17 for destinations that are just right: far enough away to feel like you’re getting out of town, but not so far that you’re spending your precious time traveling. There are ideas for everyone — from train lovers to thrill seekers to nature lovers and more. They’re all places to make great memories… and take photos that you’ll be scrolling through and reminiscing about soon enough!

Tikkun Farm

Fall fun on the farm looks a little different at Tikkun Farm, Mt. Healthy’s 3.5 acre city homestead. Its volunteers are not dressed in silly costumes and there’s no sight of spooky skeletons to be found. Instead, you’ll find a peaceful, restorative space for families to both volunteer their time to city farm life or receive some help of their own in the Nourishing Families program.

Tikkun Farm offers visitors a glimpse into farm life through programs like Creation Care: hands-on volunteer planting, weeding, mulching, tending and harvesting the land. Weekly garden projects are available in short shifts like sorting organic material, composting, digging, tending gardens, organizing supplies and maintaining tools. Or, gather with the weekend group for Saturday morning play in the soil.

A farm is not complete without animals! Families can sign up for various animal care opportunities like putting the Guinea hens to bed, collecting eggs, refilling water bowls, feeding the two resident pot-bellied pigs, fostering baby chicks in the spring and leading

farm tours for visitors. While little kids love helping out with farm chores, Tikkun Farm also hosts middle- and high-school students with after-school activities and job training related to environmental work.

Family Farm Days

Saturday mornings during spring, summer and fall is Family Farm Day, the day where the entire family does farm activities together. Start out with preschool-friendly yoga in the morning, a full farm tour, meet the animals, do projects like preparing a family meal to share, creating nature art or drumming.

Nourishing Families Free

Market

Tikkun Farm has a passion for feeding children and the community through the Nourishing Families market. Families in need of food support may shop one day a week on Tuesday, Friday or Saturday. If residing in the Mt. Healthy area, residents can sign up for crockpot meals, a curated meal bag with all of the ingredients for an easy dump and go meal.

Let’s Go Wild for Ohio!

Want to get up close to curious critters that call Ohio home? Then join the Dayton Metro Library for Wild for Ohio! Meet Ohio wildlife photographer and author David FitzSimmons, who will present his books, Curious Critters and Salamander Dance. Watch a special episode of the PBS KIDS show Nature Cat and meet Nature Cat himself for a photo! And be sure to get acquainted with the live Animal Ambassadors from Five Rivers MetroParks.

This family-friendly event takes place at the Main Library on Saturday, September 30 from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., with presentations happening at 11:00 a.m. and noon, and ongoing handson activities and performances available throughout the event. It’s free and all ages are welcome!

Art Fair at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum

Join artists and art lovers at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum on September 23 and 24 for the 2023 Art Fair in Hamilton. This annual gathering includes more than 70 artists and vendors celebrating art from multiple mediums. Over the course of the two days, guests can visit, peruse and buy one-ofa-kind handmade creations made by local and world-class artists. The event also features live music at the pavilion, familyfriendly activities, food and a beer garden.

The artists’ booths are set amongst the sculptures that dot the gorgeous grounds of Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum. Don’t miss the chance to be surrounded by art at one of the Park’s largest events!

How Movement Impacts Mental Wellness

Have you ever noticed how certain activities can shift the way you feel? That’s because our moods, behaviors, thoughts and physicality (or physical abilities) are interconnected. So, when we make positive changes to one, we can see a domino effect in others. Research suggests that moving our bodies regularly (whether through physical activity or exercise) improves our mental and physical health.

Studies show that movement benefits your body and mind by:

∙ Improving mood and ability to focus

∙ Increasing positive classroom behavior and academic achievement for children

∙ Creating a stronger sense of self

∙ Increasing the ability to manage and adapt to stress

∙ Improving heart and brain health

Dayton Children’s behavioral health and sports expert, Linh-Han Ikehara, says all forms of movement have nourishing benefits for our bodies and minds, regardless of the level or duration.

“Often, when we think about exercising, we might think of it as a high sweat workout at the gym,” Linh-Han says. “The idea is to focus on building consistency of healthy behaviors through movement, and there are many ways we can do this daily. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach.”

Building a Positive Relationship with Movement

Now that we know movement can improve our mental wellness, here's how you can be constructive and make movement a nourishing part of your lifestyle.

The first thing you should do is make it fun! Find simple ways to move every day and involve the whole family.

“We’re more likely to engage in movement when it makes us happy and creates connection with others,” Linh-Han says.

Here are a few ideas:

∙ Go for a walk or bike ride. Bring the family dog, if you have one!

∙ Have a hula hoop competition.

∙ Choose an animal and pretend to move like it. Try cheetah, elephant and rabbit to start.

∙ Train for a 5K with a meaningful cause.

∙ Engage in a daily strength challenge of doing more jumping jacks or pushups.

Next, it’s important to let go of the idea that you have to be perfect! Remember that some movement is better than nothing at all. Shift the focus from checking exercises off of your to-do list to discovering how moving your body makes you feel. And, if your schedule becomes busy, be flexible and realize there are many options to get movement each day.

By encouraging kids to move each day, we can empower them to remain physically and mentally fit. Hop Aboard a Hayride

s the leaves turn vibrant colors and the crisp fall air sets in, it's time to celebrate all-things autumn in southwest Ohio. Fall is the perfect time to create memories by visiting some of the places around town that lean into the magic of this enchanting season. Here are some ideas for fall experiences that will put your family in a cozy autumn mood!

Enjoy the Changing Leaves During a Nature Hike

There’s no better way to admire the beauty of the season than with a family hike. Explore Great Parks of Hamilton County and one of their 22 parks and nature preserves all throughout the area. Cincinnati Parks and Cincinnati Nature Center are great options in Cincinnati, or visit one of the several Five Rivers MetroParks in the Dayton area for gorgeous bike paths, trails and parks.

Find a Fall Festival

There are lots of festivals happening this fall. In Dayton, Learning Tree Farm’s Autumn Fest is happening on September 16, featuring a full day of outdoor fall fun including pony rides, hayrides, kids crafts, historic and nature-based games and activities, animal interactions, and more (learningtreefarm.org). And in Waynesville, enjoy carnival games, pumpkin painting, a corn maze and much more at the Waynesville Fall Fest, taking place on September 16 (waynesvillefallfest.com). Get Lost in a Corn Maze

A-maze-ing adventures await you this fall. Get a little corny at Loveland’s Blooms & Berries, which has two corn mazes for kids of all ages: a 7-acre labyrinth that takes about an hour to conquer, and a smaller 15-minute maze. Tom’s Maze in Germantown is 8 fun-filled acres, and you can even explore the maze in the dark (be sure to bring a flashlight!)!

Cowvin’s Corny Maze and Playland is open daily starting on September 16 at Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs, and features more than 3½ acres of cornfield and has over one mile of paths.

Hayrides and fall go hand in hand. At Bonnybrook Farms in Clarksville, hitch a ride on a covered wagon to explore the farm in the most charming way possible. If you’re up for a drive, Country Pumpkins in Dry Ridge, Kentucky, offers hay rides on Fridays through Sundays starting on September 9. And if your kids prefer horseback rides to hayrides, Nation Road Horse Rental in Oxford takes guests on a trek through the beautiful backwoods of Butler County.

Pick a Perfect Gourd at a Pumpkin Patch

No matter where you’re located in southwest Ohio, you can find a place to pick the perfect pumpkin, including Kleather’s Pumpkin Patch in Springboro, Burwinkel Farms in Ross, McMonigle Farms in Middletown and Shaw Farms in Milford all boast a beautiful selection of fall’s orange mascot. And of course, Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs has one of the most picturesque pumpkin patches in Ohio!

Relax During a Scenic Train Ride

Ohio is gorgeous in the fall, and one of the best ways to see the fall foliage is on a train. LM&M Railroad in Lebanon offers fallthemed train rides, including the Pumpkin Patch Express which journeys to a pumpkin patch. And if you’re up for a road trip into Indiana, Whitewater Valley Railroad’s Valley Flyer takes riders on a tour starting at Connersville and through Metamora.

Savor the Fruits of the Season at an Apple Orchard

It’s apple season! At Iron’s Fruit Farm in Lebanon, you’ll find varieties like Paula Red, McIntosh and Gala, as well as fall fun activities happening on weekends in October. Another Lebanon favorite, Hidden Valley Orchards offers homegrown fruits, vegetables, seasonal U-Pick crops and fun activities at their farm. Dayton’s own Monnin’s Fruit Farm offers 20 v arieties of apples available during U-pick season, typically through October. If you’re up for a road trip, A&M Farm Orchard in Midland is well worth the drive.

Fall Break Getaways

Fall break is the perfect time to pack your bags, hit the road and create memories with your loved ones. Whether you're seeking an outdoor adventure or a place to unwind and enjoy the season as a family, here are four destinations to consider for fall break!

GO HIKING AND CAMPING

Hocking Hills

Logan, Ohio

A hidden gem nestled in the southeastern region of Ohio, Hocking Hills really puts on a show during the fall season. If you're searching for a place to immerse yourself in vibrant fall colors, this is the place, as the peak season of autumn glory coincides with fall break.

Hocking Hills has seven major hiking trails, each with its own unique features. Hiking to Old Man’s Cave rewards you with gorgeous views of waterfalls. If you have older kids, take a hike to The Rock House, the region’s only true cave in the park. You’ll see breathtaking scenery on this mile-long hike as you descend steps to view The Rock House, a 150-foot cliff of Black Hand sandstone. Cedar Falls is a half-mile hike that will take you to a seasonal waterfall that usually runs until early fall.

As you drive around the Hocking Hills area, you will see lots of signs for lodging tucked into the woods. If you’re looking to stay in a cabin, The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is a cozy choice. This bed and breakfast is surrounded on three sides by Hocking Hills State Park. It offers lots of unique lodging options, including luxury cabins perfect for a family of four, all the way up to lodges that sleep 12.

VISIT A NEW-TO-YOU MUSEUM

Candyland Children’s Museum

Portsmouth, Ohio

One of the great things about traveling with young children is that you could make a whole day trip out of visiting a children’s

museum! If you’re looking for a sweet new museum to explore, then check out Candyland Children's Museum, located in the heart of the historic Boneyfiddle District in Portsmouth, Ohio. This delightful museum is a haven of discovery-based learning and play for children ages 0-10, but all ages are welcome. With three floors to explore, there's lots of fun for everyone in your family.

Programming at the museum changes frequently, providing a unique experience each visit. You’ll find lots of opportunities for pretend play, storytimes, mini rock climbing, water tables, arts and crafts activities, STEM play and much more.

FIND THRILLS AND CHILLS AT AN AMUSEMENT PARK

Cedar Point

Sandusky, Ohio

This renowned amusement park in northern Ohio transforms into a frightfully fun destination for families and thrill-seekers around fall break. During select nights from September 14 through October 29, Cedar Point offers "HalloWeekends," which includes a lineup of attractions and entertainment tailored to the fall season. As you enter the park, you'll be greeted with festive decorations, including jack-o'lanterns, cobwebs and eerie lighting, transforming Cedar Point into a spine-chilling wonderland.

For those seeking family-friendly fun, HalloWeekends has plenty of options to enjoy. Little ones can embark on a Trick-or-Treat Trail, where they can collect candy from friendly characters and experience the joy of Halloween in a safe environment. Be sure to come in costume! Take a spin on the park's iconic rides, which are open throughout the Halloween events, and experience the thrill of towering coasters and whimsical attractions adorned with spooky decorations. HalloWeekends also

offers spooktacular live entertainment, including Halloween-themed shows. Be sure to catch “Luminosity,” a mesmerizing extravaganza that combines music, special effects, and choreography. And, of course, no Halloween event is complete without an incredible fireworks display that lights up the night sky, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

EXPLORE A NATIONAL PARK

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Brecksville, Ohio

A great way to get caught up in “all the fall feels” is by enjoying nature in one of Ohio’s eight national parks. You’ll find Cuyahoga Valley National Park just outside of Cleveland, offering a stunning display of fall colors during the autumn months.

Start your visit by taking a scenic drive through the park and admiring the changing leaves. Then, take your family on a fall hike. The park offers a variety of trails for all skill levels, from a

leisurely stroll along the boardwalk to a challenging trek up a mountain. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, such as deer, foxes and even bald eagles.

If you're feeling adventurous, consider renting a bike and pedaling through the park. The winding bike trails offer a unique perspective on the fall foliage and a fun way to get some exercise as a family.

Be sure to check out the farmer's market at Howe Meadow, held every Saturday morning through October 29. It’s a great way to stock up on locally grown fall produce and homemade goods from the area's farmers and vendors.

RELAX AT A RESORT

French Lick Resort

French Lick, Indiana

Put the “break” in fall break by heading to a nearby resort that offers equal parts relaxation and entertainment. Nestled in the heart of the Hoosier National Forest, French Lick Resort is home to two historic hotels, three golf courses, two spas, indoor and outdoor pools and a Vegas-style casino. Activities range from horseback riding to bowling to surrey bike rentals, and there are tons of hiking trails to explore the grounds. Best of all, KidsFest Lodge offers supervised entertainment for the kiddos while mom and dad hit the spa (or the casino!).

SPEND THE DAY ON A TRAIN

Whitewater Valley Railroad Connersville, Indiana

Whitewater Valley Railroad dates back to 1867 and offers regularly scheduled excursions throughout the year. Fall break is a great time to catch a ride, because Whitewater offers special rides during the autumn season.

The Fall Foliage Flyer is a five-hour round-trip excursion through the scenic Whitewater Valley with a two-hour layover in historic Metamora. This train departs from Connersville's Grand Central Station on Thursdays and Fridays in October.

Also in the fall, Whitewater is offering a train ride to Metamora, for the Metamora Canal Days Festival. On Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8, hop aboard this seven-hour roundtrip excursion through the scenic Whitewater Valley with a four-hour layover in historic Metamora. Departure is from Connersville's Grand Central Station. It’s a good way to enjoy the Metamora Canal Days Festival without worrying about parking!

One way to enjoy the beauty of the resort during the fall is by going on one of the seasonal hikes or morning walks that are offered free of charge to hotel guests. Start at West Baden Springs Hotel

Balancing the Cost of Private School

We all want what’s best for our children, especially when it comes to education. Private school is one option that parents might consider — one that comes with many plusses, but can also include a big price tag. You might think that private school is out of reach for your budget, but think again. Tuition ranges widely among private schools, and there are a surprising number of ways to make private school a reality, including through scholarships, tax programs, grants and more.

Your Child's First Job

If the words, “Can I have some money for…” have started to wear on you (and your bank account), then it might be time for your teen to start looking for their first job. The idea of money in your teen’s pocket might be enticing, but if you find yourself in a space of anticipation and anxiety at the thought of your child clocking in for the first time, know you aren’t alone!

When can my teen start to work in the state of Ohio?

First off, it’s important to know when your teen is eligible to start working in the state of Ohio and what the restrictions are. Children ages 14 and 15 are restricted to 3 hours of work per school day, 8 hours per nonschool day with a limit of 18 hours per school week and 40 hours per non-school week. That is, unless employment is incidental to bona fide programs of vocational cooperative training, work-study or other work-oriented programs with the purpose of educating students, and the program meets standards established by the state board of education. They also may not work before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. except for June 1 through September 1, or during any school holiday of five days or more, when that increases to 9 p.m.

Sixteen and 17 year olds have more work eligibility, but are not able to work before 7 a.m. on any day that school is in session, or 6 a.m. if the person was not employed after 8 p.m. the previous night. Also, they may not work after 11 p.m. on any night preceding a day that school is in session.

How can we fit one more thing into our busy schedules?

With sports and extracurriculars and all the things, you and your teen might be wondering where in the world you will even find those extra hours in the day. The great news is that lots of employers are willing to work with teens and their schedules. Employers need reliable help and your teen needs money — it’s a win-win. Be sure to tell your teen to be upfront about their schedule and availability when applying for the

job. Let the employer know what days aren’t going to work, and what days will work. This is a great opportunity for your teen to learn the importance of planning ahead, time management and good communication when it comes time to request days off.

How many hours should I let my teen work per week?

Each state has different laws that are put in place to protect your child from being overworked at a young age. But just because your teen can work that many hours a week, doesn’t mean that is necessarily what is good for them or your family. Make sure you and your teen discuss what is reasonable for them at this time in their lives. While making money and having a job are important and do provide a lot of wonderful skills that will be beneficial throughout life, there are still other things that take precedence,

like school and other family priorities. Be sure you set realistic goals and also know you can dial back at any time if it is starting to feel like you are in over your head.

How do I let my teen take the lead when looking for a job?

If your teen has expressed interest in applying for a job, be sure to let them know they’ve got this and they are fully capable. Talk to them about how to request an application, how to fill it out properly, what to wear to work, showing up on time and anything else that may go with the job description. The important thing is to equip them to take the initiative and do these things on their own. If they feel nervous about asking for the application, you can walk in with them and let them know where you will be standing if they need to find you — but assure them they can do it! Sometimes, it takes a little nudging, but once they see what they are capable of, it might just open their eyes to a world of endless possibilities.

This is the time to learn new skills, gain responsibility, and make a little extra money.

Like any shopping trip, you’ll do best with a list that’s organized and lays out your game plan. Consignment sales typically carry items that are in season, so take inventory of what your kids need for the coming season and start there.

Some consignment sales have special offers, contests or even coupons. Check out the sale’s website, sign up to the email list or follow them on social media.

Purchase the Pre-sale Pass

It seems counterintuitive: Why BUY a pass if you’re trying to SAVE? But you’ll find the best selection at the pre-sale. Consignment events have started opening up their pre-sales to paid passholders, which were previously designated only for sale volunteers or consignors. If you’re in search of a rare item or popular clothing size, the pre-sale is the way to go.

Leave the Kids at Home

If possible, leave the kids with a sitter, friend or grandparent. Focus on your shopping plan and escape without grabbing extra unneeded items.

Review Your Items

Consignment sales are only for a limited time, so purchases are usually final sale. Most sales offer sorting tables or quiet corners for shoppers to inspect possible purchases. Take advantage of them! The last thing you want is to get home and realize there’s a flaw or issue.

Consignment sales offer deep discounts on the final day. This means extra savings for you and inventory off their floor. Local Spotlight: One Bistro

Providing a place in Xenia where neighbors can eat together.

In Greene County, more than 4,400 families are living below the poverty level and do not receive food stamps or supplemental nutrition assistance, and more than 13% of residents struggle with food insecurity. To combat this, One Bistro gives a hand up, not a hand out, by providing healthy, affordable meals in a warm and welcoming environment. It’s a faith-based, non-profit, pay-what-you-can, pay-itforward café created to combat food insecurity and build community.

Southwest Ohio Parent talked to Denise Davis, president of One Bistro in Xenia, to find out more about this organization that’s striving to feed those who are most in need of a comforting meal.

Tell us how One Bistro got started.

One Bistro was founded by executive chef Robert Adamson and his wife, Kim, in 2012. Together, they combined their resources and talents, reaching out to their neighbors and offering

a sense of community, friendship and hope through delicious, healthy, affordable meals. Kim and Robert created a place where all are welcome to come just as they are, regardless of their ability to pay. When you dine in a pay-what-you-can, pay-it-forward community café, you are helping combat food insecurity in your neighborhood. One Bistro is governed by a board of directors and has four paid team members; everyone else is a volunteer.

Our signature dishes are always popular: classic corned beef or turkey reuben, spinach goat cheese and bacon pizza, strawberry quinoa salad and eggs benedict. We also run daily specials.
