The Month of Gratitude

“T

hanks Mom.” Who doesn’t love to hear that phrase? Whether it’s said over a quick text or at the end of a heartfelt conversation, these are the words that let us know that yes, our kids really do appreciate us. In November, we’re reminded of the importance of recognizing who and what we should be thankful for. The challenge is to keep this attitude of gratitude a year-long goal and not just bring it out with the cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving Day.

Did you know that cultivating gratitude in kids not only makes them happier, but more optimistic, less depressed and more satisfied with school as well? Plus, being thankful is actually a skill you can teach them. This month our article The Science of Gratitude details some research-based methods to encourage this behavior in your family. SPOTLIGHT WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN NOVEMBER

Celebrate the true holiday spirit The Holiday Giving Tree Program at Spring Grove Cemetery allows tri-staters to play Santa for a family in need.

Starting November 21, the park’s gazebo will feature a holiday tree decorated with “wish list” ornaments. Visitors can stop by and take an ornament, purchase the items requested and then return the gifts to Spring Grove to be distributed. This program runs through December 13, and is a great way to get kids to embrace the spirit of giving for the holidays.

Light up the square – and ice skate while you’re there!

From now through February 15, Cincinnatians can lace up their ice skates and take part in an annual holiday tradition on Fountain Square at the U. S. Bank Ice Rink. At 7,000 square feet, Cincinnati’s rink is on par with New York’s Rockefeller Center! On Saturday, November 28, take the family to Fountain Square for the annual unveiling of the Cincinnati holiday tree at Macy’s Light Up the Square.

Earn that second piece of pumpkin pie One of the oldest and largest 10k run/walks in the nation, Cincinnati’s Thanksgiving Day Race is a celebration of good health, great friends and enduring family traditions!

This year marks the 106th anniversary of the race, which starts and ends at Paul Brown Stadium, winds through downtown Cincinnati, Newport and Covington and crosses two iconic Queen City bridges. Footnotes Thoughts from the margins of a mom’s life

I had taken two children swimming by myself, an ambitious move, especially as dinnertime was approaching. After giving rides on my back, blowing water through the noodle and floating around the whirl pool, it was time to go.

But they did not want to leave. This was the beginning of a downward spiral that climaxed eight minutes later, when I found myself in a locker room with a boy who was alternately threatening to return to the pool to resume swimming and refusing to get in the shower. I had a feeling familiar to moms of young children on the verge of a tantrum: I’ve got to get out of here! Without showering the kids or

even stripping off their swimsuits, I packed up the bags and hustled us toward the lobby.

him up, but then suddenly I realized that I shouldn’t be.

When we reached the front, my daughter reached down to get a few stickers from a basket by the door. My son began to do the same. “Oh no, sir,” I said firmly. “No stickers for you after that behavior in the locker room.” “Noooo!” he cried as hot tears began to stream down his face. “Don’t take my stickers!” It was the quintessential meltdown moment. I picked him up, jostling the bags awkwardly and making apologetic faces to those around me as I hurried to the car.

Appropriately enough, it was raining.

“Stop Caroline,” I said. “It’s not up to you to talk about William’s behavior.” And then to my complete surprise, William responded, “Thank you Mommy.” The anger had drained from his voice. A more peaceful feeling came into the car. What a tender little reversal!

What did it mean? Upon more consideration, I think William’s feelings of isolation and shame diminished when I, having already punished him and removed him from the situation, came alongside him.

Once moving toward home, my daughter piped up. “You were very rude, William!” she cried. “You were very mean to Mommy and to me!” He shot back, “I was not!” and cried louder. I was keeping quiet, planning on a talk when we got home. I’d already issued a punishment back in the locker room (“No swimming on Friday”) and didn’t want to escalate things now. But I felt that my daughter was saying the things I wanted to say to my son. I was glad she was working

By not letting his sister tear him down, I communicated to William that I was with him and for him. Being passive in this situation would have been easy, and maybe even satisfying – but ultimately it wouldn’t have helped my boy. Staying attentive and in an alliance with our kids, even when it’s tough to do so, may lead to more sensitivity in conflict and more tenderhearted resolutions. As a mother who wants the affectionate bonds with my kids to stay strong even in the midst of a YMCA meltdown, I certainly hope so!

A Dad Influence Screened out Pete Gilbert

“No screens on school nights.”

It’s the newest rule around our house.

Before you think I turned into the sinister dad that banned dancing in Footloose, hear me out. Screen time isn’t evil; it just needs to be used in moderation.

Our family started out allowing two 15 minute sessions of screen time per day. All was well. It became a problem when those 15 minutes turned into 30 minutes, then 45 minutes or longer. Our kids were coming home from school, arguing who was getting what screen, and spending far too much time playing Minecraft or watching kids play with toys on You Tube. (Why kids would prefer to watch someone play with a toy rather than actually play with a toy themselves is beyond me).

Our kids weren’t interacting with each other or with me or my wife. They weren’t burning off any extra physical energy that didn’t get out of their system during their fifteen minute recess (yes, fifteen minute recess.) They were restless at bedtime, whined when we told them to get off their screens and whined again asking when they could get back on their screens.

It wasn’t working out.

Limiting screen time didn’t really help and eliminating screens altogether seemed a little unnecessary. My wife and I came up with a new plan, “No Screens on School Nights.”

In the two months since we started this new approach, it’s worked really well for our family. The kids play together more, they are more creative, less whiny and go to bed easier at night, likely because they’ve exhausted themselves with physical play and they haven’t been staring at the blue light of a screen for an hour right before bed. On the weekends, we go back to using tokens for screen time. Since our kids aren’t on screens during the week, we don’t feel bad if we let them stay on their devices a little longer on these days.

This system may not be for everyone, but if you’re frustrated with your own kids’ relationship with whatever screen they choose, a “No Screens on School Nights” policy may be something to consider for your family too.

ntroducing children to the pleasure of making music gives them a gift they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.

Parents seeking to begin this process often have many questions.

Is there a right time to begin music lessons?

What instrument should a child start with? How do we find a good instructor? Before you tickle those ivories into a twist, read the advice of local experts on how to hit a high note when starting your child off on their path to creating music.

A student may drop music lessons not out of a dislike for the instrument itself, but because he or she didn’t click with a great teacher.

W h e n t o begi n “It’s never too soon and it’s never too late,” says Rachel Kramer, President of Baldwin Music Education Center, who believes that parents who are deeply interested in starting lessons should decide early on to involve their children in music.

Is there a guideline to help parents decide the best time to introduce their child to formal lessons? Cincinnati Pops Conductor John Morris Russell emphasizes that every child is different, and the best time to introduce an instrument truly depends on a child’s ability to focus. “My wife and I waited until each of our kids begged us to play an instrument,” he says. “We would attend children’s concerts, chamber ensembles, even Irish fiddling at the local pub, pointing out the instruments up close.”

Russell says playing recordings at home and trying real instruments when given the opportunity will open a child’s eyes to the many types of music and instruments out there. “When a child finds a connection to a particular instrument, they’ll let you know!” Taking advantage of the Family Fun Zone, prior to all Lollipops Family Concerts, is a great way to expose kids to music because they can see and touch the instruments before the performance.

Another factor to consider when determining if a child is ready for music lessons is their individual reading level. Bethany Springelmeyer, a private piano instructor, recommends beginning piano lessons when a child is of reading age. Toni Sheffer, Director of the Northern Kentucky School of Music, agrees that a child’s experience is greater when he or she is reading comfortably.

For a younger child, Patsy Rabinowitz, the Director of the West Chester Academy, finds that an early childhood music and movement class can provide an enriching environment that can benefit a student as they continue on their musical path.

F i n di ng a n i nst ruc t or With so many music instructors and schools available, how do you find the right match for your child? Springelmeyer says it’s important to find a teacher who will make learning music fun, which can be a great motivator for a student. She also reminds parents: “You can always change teachers if you don’t feel like it is the right fit.” Kramer feels similarly, saying that ultimately a student may drop music lessons not out of a dislike for the instrument itself, but because he or she didn’t click with a great teacher.

“Personal recommendations are best, finding a teacher with a personality that suits your child is really important,” echoes Russell.

When searching for an instructor, Kramer suggests consulting with family and friends who are acquainted with the musical community. Asking for recommendations from local music teacher organizations, music stores, schools and churches are great ways to explore options. If possible, attend an instructor’s recital for more insight into their personality and style. Ultimately, the best teacher will inspire and nurture a student’s musical growth and instill a lifelong love of music

C ho osi ng a n i nst ru m e n t “The piano or keyboard is an excellent instrument to start with because the keys are laid out in a logical manner and it is easy to produce good sound right away,” says Joe Backer, Director of the Cincinnati School of Music. Russell agrees, explaining that piano and string instruments work best for very young children, although percussion and singing have their advantages because

they can “start on day one.”

He also states that, “Once all the ‘adult’ front teeth have come in, a child’s embouchure is ready for all the wind and brass instruments.”

Toni Sheffer from the Northern Kentucky School of Music believes that not every student has to start with piano, but “every musician with a piano background is a stronger musician.”

An introduction to piano can provide students with a solid and visual method of learning notes and rhythms. “Good piano lessons incorporate theory as well as key signatures, scales, cords, terminology, intervals and more,” says Rabinowitz.

However you decide to begin music lessons with your child, know that the benefits he or she gains will go well beyond just learning an instrument. Studies consistently show that kids who participate in musical education often enhance their academic and social skills as well as their creativity and discipline – and that’s music to any parent’s ears.

Parenting the Siblings of Children with Special Needs Recognizing the needs of the typically-developing kids in your family Ashley Albertson, MSW, LISW, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

Of the many stressors families experience today, perhaps one of the most challenging is having a child with special needs. This experience not only affects parents, but siblings of the child with special needs as well. These kids often voice concerns with regard to their brother or sister that can be important for parents to know.

Attent ion One of the main concerns of a sibling to a child with special needs is the desire for the attention and time of their parent. It can be difficult for parents to manage medical appointments, therapy appointments, school meetings, regular household duties, time for their spouse and time for all their children – especially if both parents work. However, setting aside protected time for all members of the family, including typically-developing children, is imperative to ensure that their emotional needs are met. Try accomplishing this in simple ways, like

cooking a meal together, watching movies or television together, taking a walk or reading stories before bedtime.

These small actions can go a long way in making your typically-developing children feel loved and valued.

Gu i lt Feelings of guilt are frequently expressed by siblings of special needs children.

Siblings may feel guilty about not being the child with special needs. They may also feel guilty about other strong emotions they have toward their sibling, such as embarrassment, anger and jealousy. Be sure to create a safe environment for your typically developing children to share these feelings with you.

Encourage them not to bottle these emotions inside as they can often lead to negative coping skills. If you think your child’s feelings are cause for concern, consider locating a qualified counselor to speak with him or her.

E mbarr a ssment Some children feel acute embarrassment when they are in public with their special needs sibling, especially if their sibling acts or appears different than others. Try to go on family outings where all members can participate, or allow your typically-developing child to participate in different activities for a time and then rejoin the family. Creating an open environment in which your typicallydeveloping child can freely communicate their thoughts and needs can greatly improve the family atmosphere. This approach can help kids feel that they are not obligated to participate in family events that include the sibling with special needs, but instead do so because of a desire of their own.

C are g i v ing Many siblings of children with special needs find themselves in the role of a caregiver. Some typically-developing children are not ready for this kind of responsibility, which can create an unsafe environment for everyone. Parents should always use their best judgment when allowing their typically-developing children to care for the special needs child. Try to reach out to adult family members or friends you trust to watch your child with special needs before relying on your other children.

Pressure Some siblings can feel pressured to develop proficiencies in ways their special needs sibling cannot. Children may attempt to participate in school, sports, extracurricular activities or other social activities to compensate for the ways

their sibling with special needs is unable to.

Make sure your typically-developing kids feel free to pursue their own interests without the pressure to please you.

Suggest ions for parents Remembering these tips can help you be a great parent to all of your children.

1. Create an open line of communication encouraging family support and cohesiveness.

2. Attempt to set aside protected time for your non-affected children to help them feel loved and valued.

3. Allow flexibility when it comes to public outings and be sensitive to your typically-developing child’s social concerns.

4. Be conscious and cautious of allowing your typically-developing children to care for their sibling with special needs, especially if they are voicing concerns about not feeling ready for such a big responsibility.

5. Remember that all your children are unique and have something special to contribute.

any people associate adoption with bringing a brand new baby home from the hospital. But what if the right child for you is actually a grade schooler or teenager? In honor of National Adoption Month this November, read on to find out why welcoming an older child into your life could be the best decision for your family.

As a prospective adoptive parent, you’ll have many questions about the process. Necco offers weekly foster parent training classes at its Cincinnati office, says Parks. The agency can also access information about children who are available for adoption and review profiles with potential families. Postadoption, parents can take advantage of therapy and case management services as their child adjusts to his or her new environment.

1. There’s an immediate need The Dave Thomas Foundation for adoption reports that over 100,000 children in the United States foster care system are currently available for adoption. The average age for these children is 7½ years old. Per the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, more than 3,200 waiting children live right here in Ohio. Many Ohio residents have also successfully adopted older children from other countries.

Local parents Kristen and Jeff Martin are well-versed on the subject of adopting older children. In 2010, the couple adopted then 9 year-old Jesus and 14 year old Victor from Colombia. In 2014, they adopted then 7 year-old Amier and 8 year-old JD from Ohio foster care. The couple also has three biological daughters, 2 year-old Emma, 7 year-old Grace and 9 year-old Ava. They also care for three additional children. We asked the family to share their insights on adopting older children.

2. Older kids offer unique advantages “When the child [you adopt] is older, you can do so many things together,” says Kristen. As an avid runner, she was able to invite her

sons to enjoy her hobby with her. “Jesus used to love riding his bike with me while I ran.

We would talk and bond,” she recalls. Victor even completed the Flying Pig Half-Marathon with Kristen and her husband. In turn, Kristen was able to get involved in her new sons’ passion for soccer.

Adopting an older child allows you the opportunity to have conversations about what’s going in their lives and have the ability to share activities together right away.

3. Not everyone is prepared to care for a newborn For some, the thought of being responsible for the daily care of a baby can be overwhelming. Parents adopting an older child can skip the diapers and bottles, says Jessica Parks, MSW, LSW, Program Director at Necco. Even better? “They sleep through the night,” she says.

Kristen explains that having an older child requires a different mindset, which can be appealing to many parents: “When you adopt a teen, you are ushering them into adulthood.”

5. You can choose each other While adopting older children brings its own challenges, Martin believes older kids have a better understanding of the adoption process than younger ones. In her family’s case, Jesus and Victor were able to spend several days with the Martins before being given the choice whether to go forward with the adoption. “This gave them, I believe, a great deal of control and ownership over the process,” she says. “They chose us just like we chose them.”

when cancer hits home a local family shares their experience with childhood cancer Summer Daily

W

inn and Emilie Parry were on vacation with their 18-month-old son, Lach, when Emilie noticed odd spots appearing on his skin.

Lach had already been to the hospital three times that month for a fever and respiratory infection, and she was worried all the antibiotics were causing kidney failure.

She called her brother-inlaw, a doctor, to get his opinion.

“Drop what you’re doing. You need to go to the ER,” he told her.

Blood tests revealed that Lach had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and they were immediately medevac’d to Cincinnati. Winn and Emilie were in shock. This happened to people in movies or on the news, not their vivacious son.

Shortly after Lach was diagnosed, Emilie gave birth to their daughter, Lila. Lila stopped breathing at birth. For a month, the Parrys divided their time between children on two separate floors of the

hospital. After Lach and Lila were both released, they still had three longs years of treatment for Lach. The harsh side effects of chemotherapy caused Lach to lose all ability to talk, sit, walk and even roll over. Finally in February of this year, Lach finished his last treatment and was declared cancer-free.

A cancer diagnosis is often a parent’s absolute worst nightmare. How do families cope with such a grave situation and still manage the ongoing responsibilities of home life? Emilie says, “I felt like my world was literally coming to an end. But I couldn’t let myself break down, because I had to be strong enough for my kids.”

Emilie found solace in running. She would bundle Lach up, put him in the stroller and run for miles just looking at him and being grateful that she lived in a time when his diagnosis wasn’t a death sentence. “If I started having those dark thoughts, I’d just go for a long run. You can’t let your head go to that place.”

– EMILIE PARRY What wasn’t helpful? Friends or family sharing unintentionally hurtful remarks or questions.

Someone made the comment about their neighbor who had cancer and had died. Emilie says, “You’re like, ‘What?

Really? Why are you telling me this right now? I want to punch you in the face right here.’ If you know someone who had cancer and died, don’t share a scary or sad story. Because in that moment, you already are scared, freaking out and worried.”

Of course, the financial toll of treating cancer can be enormously stressful. The Parrys were able to have the supplemental insurance program BCMH approved which covered expenses their insurance did not. “This was such a stress relief for us. Our medical bills would have been over $1 million the first year,” says Emilie.

Another challenge that came with the deluge of treatments and appointments was finding time for Lila.

Taking care of Lach and trying to make sure she wasn’t getting slighted was a difficult balance to strike. “When I had her, I thought how am I going to divide my attention equally, and I felt so guilty. But someone told me, it’s okay to have those fears, but just realize that your other child needs you just as much as your sick child,” she says.

Ahna Pai, director of the Patient and Family Wellness Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, sees families struggle with this situation and says, “It is really important to remember that no matter what their age, siblings will be affected by their sister’s or brother’s cancer too. The most important thing is to keep talking with the siblings and checking in with them.”

When Lila would go to Lach’s doctor appointments, the Parrys would give her little jobs to do, like preparing the masks and gloves. They tried to make the experience as easy as possible for Lach too.

Before going under anesthesia for procedures, they would pretend like he was going into space and then collect rocks to put in his room as if he had brought them back from the moon. The Parrys also talked about the treatment, shots and surgeries in a normal way so he would not pick up on their anxiety.

After difficult procedures, Lach would go to Target to choose a new toy.

And when Emilie would feel overwhelmed, she found that listening to positive stories helped her keep focus. “Looking at the success stories – it gave me so much more hope when I would see a child who had been through cancer and now they’re in high school. I literally was just grateful for every little thing I could find.”

Families Vaccinated from Flu Help Shield Those too Young to Get the Shot Premier Health

While the influenza virus – commonly called the flu – can be harmful for many healthy people, it can present added risks for pregnant women and newborns. There is a safe and simple way, however, that both groups can be protected. The flu vaccine will protect pregnant women and once they give birth, their newborns will be protected for up to six months, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The flu vaccine is safe for pregnant women and can stave off potentially dangerous effects of the virus. This can be especially important because pregnant women can face more serious complications from the flu including

pneumonia, preterm labor and premature birth, the CDC said. Since a woman’s immune system is lowered slightly during pregnancy, getting the flu shot is an important step in protecting pregnant women against the flu.

Prevention shouldn’t stop there.

Newborns are especially vulnerable and not able to receive the flu vaccine until they reach six months of age, so parents should be sure caregivers and other family members are vaccinated. If moms were not vaccinated before giving birth and are breastfeeding, getting the vaccine once the baby is born will still provide benefits for both parties.

Children under age 2 have the most serious complications from the flu, so the CDC suggests additional common-sense ways to protect babies. Beyond vaccinations for everyone in a child’s immediate circle, take everyday precautions such as diligent hand washing and staying away from people who already have the flu. Talk with your pediatrician or family physician about any pre-existing conditions that might make the flu even more serious for your newborn.

isiting multiple school open houses in a short time frame can become a dizzying blur. What key areas should parents hone in on during this brief window into a school’s environment? We reached out to several private schools in the Cincinnati area for some “insider tips” on navigating this sometimes overwhelming process.

What to expect Each school will handle their open house experience in a different way. For example, at Archbishop McNicholas High School, families are given student-led tours.

Shannon Kemp, Director of Marketing and Communications, says each visiting family is assigned a student ambassador who shares his or her own experience while leading family tours. “Each of our Student Ambassadors has his or her own story and reasons that McNicholas is the right fit, and hopefully, our prospective students will see how McNicholas is a good fit for what they are hoping to do in high school and beyond,” she says. At Saint Ursula Villa, open houses are offered during school hours so parents can visit classes in progress.

Natalie Pfister, Enrollment Director at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, says their goal is to create an open house experience that “resembles the interactive learning environment taking place in our classrooms on a daily basis.” She says the emphasis is on the experiential. “We want families to actually experience for themselves what makes our school unique, not just hear about it at Open House.”

At Montessori Academy of Cincinnati, the school encourages parent-to-parent conversations and also allows parents to speak to current middle school students, some of whom have been attending Montessori Academy since preschool.

What questions and suggestions do these school representatives have when visiting an open house? Here’s a brief list:

• How would you describe the atmosphere of the school? (Ask current students if possible.)

Academics • What is the average class size?

• How do teachers engage students in the learning process?

• What is a typical day or week like in your classroom?

• What kind of hands-on or project-based learning do you do?

• What do you see as the goal of homework and how much support are parents expected to provide?

• Can I see some samples of students’ work?

• How do you promote a student’s independence and ownership of his or her education in the classroom and beyond?

• How do teachers differentiate instruction for students working at various levels?

• How do you integrate technology into the classroom?

• What academic clubs, sports and electives are available?

• What kind of standardized testing do you do? How is student success gauged?

• Do you offer any unique academic programs?

• What types of financial assistance are available?

School Environment • Ask to observe classrooms of students younger and older than your child so you can get a sense of the full educational trajectory.

• Note whether classroom environments are colorful, organized and easy to use. Look for student work being displayed.

• Take notice of student engagement and participation and teacher enthusiasm.

• If possible, observe behavior in hallways and non-classroom spaces.

• Look for student projects or artwork and where it is displayed throughout the school.

• Follow the school’s social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for insight into what types of activities and events are highlighted.

Be sure to jot down notes during your visit and take some time to write down your impressions soon after you leave as well. This will keep all the information you’ve received organized and help you and your student make a final decision. After your visit, make sure to contact the school representative with any questions you may have forgotten to ask or get clarification on any issues important to you. Being prepared in advance of your open house visit will help ensure that you’ve made the best choice possible for your student.

Ask the Teacher Reading requirements, writing feedback and advanced readers Deb Krupowicz

Q:

My son’s teacher requires him to read for twenty minutes five nights a week. We spend twice that amount of time trying to get him to complete the reading. I am sure these battles will result in him hating to read. How can I make this a positive experience?

A:

Significant factors in creating a good reading experience are the level of the material and the subject matter. Help your son select a book about something he enjoys with a reading level that is easy for him. This should help pique his interest and keep him from feeling frustrated. Types and levels of books can be adjusted later.

Create a positive environment for reading that is relatively free from distractions.

Engage your son by reading alongside him.

If that does not work, read together. Read a

paragraph or a page and have him read the next one. Periodically stop to talk about what you have read. Involve other readers in the house if they are available to help keep the atmosphere light. Another option is to check out audio books from your local library along with their hard copies. Have your son listen to the book for a few minutes and then read some of it on his own.

Consider reading the first 25-30 pages aloud so that your son becomes hooked on the particular story.

If focusing is a challenge, set a timer for ten minutes and encourage him to do something physical like jumping jacks for just a minute or two, then return to ten minutes of reading. Gradually increase the amount of time spent reading by small increments. Decrease the duration of the breaks. In no time, your son will be reading for the full allotment required.

You can also try turning the assignment into a challenge. Make a chart and graph how long your son is reading without becoming

distracted or without complaining. When he meets the 20 minute challenge, offer a small reward like doing his chores the next day.

Perhaps seeing his own progress will be the encouragement he needs to persevere.

Q:

I am really disappointed in my fifth grader’s writing experience at school. His teacher encourages the students to write, but he does not provide feedback about what he sees – positive or negative. How can I help?

A:

There are many theories about how writing skills develop best in children. Some suggest that by reading good writing, good writers are born.

Others think that by writing a great deal, skills improve. Both reading and writing practice are important to developing writers, but instruction and feedback are necessary to help children become effective writers.

Start by using the pieces that your son has already written for school. Use those pieces to determine if he is writing clearly. To help him understand where clarification is needed, look at the thesis or topic sentence first. Discuss whether everything in the piece contributes to the topic. If the body of the writing needs clarification, jot down a question that the writing creates in your mind on a sticky note.

Limit yourself to a couple of questions per selection. Have your son incorporate the answers into his writing.

As you see that his writing has become clearer, give some attention to the mechanics of the piece. Typically, a student will hear errors in punctuation or word usage if he reads the piece out loud.

When his piece is clearly and correctly written, circle a few words for him to “spice up” with more interesting vocabulary choices. Finally, underline a sentence or two for him to write in a variety of ways to help him understand how to vary the structure of his sentences.

These steps should result in improved writing without adding significantly to your son’s work load.

Q:

How do I find books to help my daughter grow as a reader? She is reading well above her peers, but her school library does not seem to have books at her level.

A:

Matching high level readers with appropriate reading material is certainly a challenge. Most elementary schools do not house books beyond the highest level of students in their buildings, making it very difficult for fourth, fifth or sixth grade students to find challenging books.

The classics are the answer. The vocabulary is much richer and the sentence structure much more complex than contemporary literature. The problems that are explored in the books are presented in a way that is appropriate for middle grade readers. Consult the librarian at your community library or conduct an online search for a good list of titles.

Michael Clay Thompson’s Classics in the Classroom is a great resource. Thompson articulates well the case for reading classic literature and provides a thorough categorized list indicating appropriate ages for reading particular books.

{ T he - far reaching effects of raising grateful children } Sara Konrath, PhD

Social relationships are filled with moments of giving and receiving. Gratitude is an important way that these relationships stay smooth. As parents, we are continually giving to our children.

Think about a time when you slaved over the stove for an hour, cooking a delicious, healthy meal, only to have your child give you that “ew” face. Now try this same scenario, but in the end your child’s face lights up, with an exclamation of “Mmmm, thank you, this looks yummy!” Here’s a reality check: research finds that children ages six and younger only say thank you about 20% of the time when receiving things.

So don’t take it too personally.

But by the time they hit age ten, this dramatically rises to about 80% of the time, thankfully. What happens? Children start to develop cognitive empathy skills, which helps them to notice when other people are intentionally doing kind things for them.

Gratitude is intimately linked with empathy.

If you know several children, you won’t be surprised to learn that research finds that gratitude is a personality trait. Some people are naturally more grateful, while others struggle to notice the good in their lives. But it is possible for people to become more grateful through daily practices or direct teaching about gratitude. In fact, the research shows that these exercises work even better for those who struggle the most to be grateful.

Gratitude-building studies have been done on both children and adults, finding similar results. When people try to be more grateful, not only does it work (they become more grateful), but the benefits start to spill over into other areas of their lives.

They start to feel happier, more optimistic, less depressed, and for children, more satisfied with school.

Children who are more satisfied with school end up doing better academically, so gratitude could potentially boost students’ motivation to study. Adults start to sleep better, exercise more, and feel physically healthier.

Not surprisingly, since gratitude is so intimately embedded within social relationships, people start to feel closer and more connected to others, and their relationships begin to improve.

These experiments also find that people are even more willing to help strangers after spending time reflecting on the things that they are grateful for.

All of these outcomes can happen in as little as two weeks of practice, and the research finds that they can last up to six months. Who knows how much longer they can last, since there is limited research looking beyond six months. But pulling out gratitude as a once-a-year platter to go with the Thanksgiving turkey is probably not

going to cut it.

Here are some research-based practices to help increase gratitude. These work for both children and adults.

1. Counting blessings Keep a daily gratitude journal for two to three weeks. At the end of each day, write down five things that you are grateful for that day. Pay special attention to the ways that other people gave to you. Yes, there are apps for that, if you would prefer to jot things down on your phone throughout the day.

2. Gratitude letter Write a letter to someone whom you have never properly thanked. Then read the letter to that person, preferably in person. This could be an excellent Thanksgiving tradition – to pick a name of a family member out a hat and then read these letters around the table. It might seem ridiculous for those of us who struggle to pass the potatoes without conflict, but in those cases, it might be especially worth a try.

3. Gratitude lessons Research finds that this direct teaching method, which was developed by Jeffrey Froh at Hoffstra University, works well in elementary school children. It involves teaching children that when others are nice to us, they do it on purpose (good intentions), using their time, treasure, or talent (cost to others), and that it helps us (benefit to us). You can find free lesson plans on his website, or check out his book Making Grateful Kids.

Gratitude is about shifting your perception.

No one has a perfect life, even though it might look that way through the distant filtered lenses of social media. But everyone has something to be grateful for. One of the most powerful ways to raise grateful children is likely to be a grateful adult. Raising grateful children means raising our own gratitude levels as well.

Sara Konrath, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Her research has found that empathy is declining among young Americans since the late 1970s. In her current work, she is testing whether an empathy-building smartphone app can help increase teens’ (ages 12-17) empathy and prosocial behavior.
