The Start of Something Good It’s November, which means it’s the start of the holidays. Some might say that the real start of the holidays doesn’t begin until after Thanksgiving, but I politely disagree. I think we could all use an extra dose of cheer right now, so I’m here to give you permission to begin the holidays pronto. You’re welcome. To get you as excited about the holidays as we are at Indy’s Child, we’re giving you a sneak peek at just some of the fun, festive and family-friendly events that are just around the corner. From performances of The Nutcracker to drive-thru light shows to Christmas celebrations, you’ll find a list of some of the holiday happenings happening right here in our area this season. Just turn to page 14 to read all about it. We’re pumped!

November is also National Adoption Month — a month dedicated to raising awareness about the critical need for adoptive families for children in foster care. Although many parents envision holding a baby in their arms, the need for loving families is especially urgent for kids over the age of 8, as they make up almost half of the youth who are seeking foster and adoptive homes. Have you considered adding an older child to your family? Turn to “Never Too Old for Family: Adopting an Older Child” on page 18 for some reasons why this could be a good choice for your family. Happy November!

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY SUSAN MICHAL, DIRECTOR OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

Dinos, Puzzles and Play It is almost that time of year when the excitement of the holidays takes off and children begin dreaming of the wonder and possibilities (presents!) of the season. Television commercials, social platforms and influencers are all inundating us with things to buy. How do you know what toy to buy that would stand the test of time? Grown-ups should search for toys that spur a child’s imagination, creativity and interest, while at the same time, encouraging developmental and educational growth. Toys can be a pleasurable way to encourage fine motor, gross motor, eye-hand coordination, tactile exploration, sensory development, coding, number sense, spatial reasoning, increased attention span, problem solving and mathematical concepts. Babies and toddlers need toys that they can hold, love and allow them to move around while crawling, scooting, standing or taking steps. Preschoolers need toys that are open-ended with many possibilities, encouraging their imagination and creativity for role playing and pretending. Look for toys that can grow with your child, such as blocks they can sort by colors and shapes, and then later build into 3D designs. Older preschoolers, kindergarteners and first-grade children love to build

experiences across the arts, sciences and humanities that have the power to transform the lives of children and families. Come see what our staff in the galleries and in the store are playing with.

The Museum Store sources toys that continue your museum experience from current exhibits (a new Dinosphere is coming!) to your living room. Completing a puzzle is a great way for families to work together. The store offers dinosaur themed floor puzzles with large pieces that help young children develop their spatial reasoning and fine motor skills, and a variety of smaller piece puzzles for the older kids. Dinosaur figures that encourage imaginative play and a curiosity to learn more about these extinct creatures, are also popular. To see a list of favorite, fun and educational toys voted on by kids during our October Kid Tested-Kid Approved event, visit childrensmuseum.org for some great shopping ideas. Happy holidays! and create by building with blocks, too — for instance, making a house and adding additional pieces to form a city. If your child has sensitivities to sounds and lights, for example, search for toys that are quiet and do not require batteries.

or shakers, for them to play with. If you don’t have instruments, create your own. Turn a pot and a wooden spoon into a drum and put beans into a plastic container as a rattle. Get curious with your child about the quality of sound those instruments make.

M

usic is a universal experience. No matter what age or what culture, people use music to relate to one another, regulate emotions and form their identities. While it can’t be contested that music plays an important role in humans’ lives, research is also beginning to show us the critical role it plays in children’s language development. In fact, music has been called a language all its own — and one that kids can master before their native language takes shape. “I work with children at a very young age, and often during our first experiences they are distracted, non-verbal and interact with the music in a limited fashion,” says Michelle Marti, the owner of ShooBeeLoo Music and Movement, a children’s music program in Indianapolis. “I see many of these children develop exponentially in the space of a few months, becoming more focused, following directions, vocalizing parts of songs (language) and developing a sense of beat and rhythm (math).” Neuroscientists at the Brain and Creativity Institute at University of Southern California are diving into why exactly this is. According to their research, which has been underway since 2012, music instruction speeds up the maturation of auditory pathways in the brain, which can, in turn, speed up the development of language, reading and other skills. This is backed up by the research of Christina Zhao, a postdoctoral researcher at University of Washington’s Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences, who says that a child’s exposure to musical patterns can improve their ability to detect and predict speech patterns.

Say Their Name

don’t have to be able to carry a tune yourself. Exposing your child to music can be as simple as turning on your favorite playlist at dinnertime or as involved as enrolling in an early-childhood music class, like Kindermusik or ShooBeeLoo Music and Movement. However, there are also a number of small, intentional things you can do at home no matter your musical skill level to increase your child’s music competence and feed their developing brain.

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat If your children ever want to hear the same song over and over and over again, don’t fret — they’re not doing it to annoy you. Children thrive on repetition because it helps them develop confidence. “I repeat songs multiple times per session,” Marti says about the music classes she offers. “I leave out words in order to encourage vocalization, I use visual references and evenly metered rhymes.” At home, repeating the same song over the course of a day or even several weeks can encourage language development, but so can playing songs that have repetitive phrases or sounds. Nursery rhymes and children’s songs are particularly good for this, but some of your favorite music can be, too.

In other words, the parts of the brain that process music and language are closely connected. As parents, we all want to give our children a head start on learning, and music just might be a fun and easy way to do that. And the good news is, you

16

INDYSCHILD.COM I November 2021

Experiment With Instruments While listening to music at home, allow your children to explore its rhythmic patterns by laying out some simple instruments, like drums

Children become more engaged with music that is personal. Try incorporating their name or names of family, friends or pets into songs you already know. For example, instead of singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” sing “Katie Has a Little Dog.” You can also make up songs about everyday experiences, such as washing dishes or driving in the car, by co-opting familiar tunes or creating your own.

Mix It Up “Along with children's music, play different genres of new and old music in the house and car — classical, jazz, world music, pop, reggae, etcetera — in addition to the music you would normally listen to,” Marti says. The diversity of genres will expose your child to a variety of meters and tonalities, which will not only help them appreciate a wider breadth of music in the long run but will improve their sensory skills by creating new neural pathways.

Have Fun Music time should be joyful, and there are so many ways to make music a fun and enriching experience in your home. Have family dance parties to explore musical rhythms. Make up hand motions to your favorite songs to improve vocabulary. Play around with silly sounds to explore the range of the human voice. “If a parent is enthusiastic about activities like dancing, singing, chanting, clapping, counting and bouncing, the child will be, as well,” Marti says. Seize opportunities that arise in your everyday life to play and have fun with music, and you’ll be feeding your child’s developing brain with seemingly little effort involved.

Never Too Old for Family:

Adopting an Older Child Considering adoption? Don’t forget that there are older kids who need loving homes, too.

WORDS BY LINDSAY CONNER

hen thinking about adoption, babies most often come to mind. But there are older kids who desperately need the love and stability of a family, too. In the U.S., about 45% of children who are in need of an adoptive home are 8 years old or older.

W

For children and youth in need of an adoptive family, finding a permanent home is invaluable. “Many of them have been waiting for years, and are longing to have a family to call their own,” says Erin K. Carter, director of adoption and recruitment for Children's Bureau, Inc., which has office locations throughout central Indiana. “Belonging is a basic human need, and many of the waiting children have not consistently experienced what it feels like to fall asleep knowing they are loved, wanted, safe and secure.”

Older Kids Need Homes, Too Some families shy away from adopting older youth because they want a younger child to experience “firsts” with. But parents who have adopted teens will tell you that

18

INDYSCHILD.COM I November 2021

there are still many firsts to experience with older children. “In fact, sharing new memories with a teen can be even more special, because they can appreciate moments in an entirely different way,” Carter says. Nearly all of the children and youth in Indiana Adoption Program, a program for hard-to-place children who are in the custody of the state, are over the age of 8. And the majority of those kids are males between ages 11 and 16. “Many are part of sibling groups, so families who want and can provide for multiple children are especially needed,” Carter says. “They come from various ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds. That’s why

we try to recruit families from all walks of life.”

What’s Required of Prospective Families Applicants must be committed, tenacious, persistent and patient. Prospective parents must complete background checks, 16 hours of training, and an interview/home study to help their social worker learn more about their ability to parent and provide a stable home. After completing these steps, families can become recommended to adopt, which allows them to view photos, read confidential child summaries, and inquire about children they might be interested in.

There are a lot of misconceptions about who can adopt from foster care, Carter adds. “Many people think that sexual orientation, relationship status or having a high income are factors that are considered, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The most important thing is being able to provide a loving, stable, permanent home for a child or sibling group.” Adopting from foster care also requires a willingness to accept a child with a complex family history, learn new or different approaches to parenting, and know when to ask for support. Families interested in adopting older children and teens need to understand that they are making a commitment to the child

for a lifetime, just as they would with a biological child. “Although our goal is to find permanent homes for Indiana’s waiting children, we also want to be realistic and honest with families about the process of adopting from foster care — because we want to make sure the right family is matched with the right child,” Carter says. “Any adoption, of a child of any age, is going to bring with it challenges. It’s critical that prospective families have a strong support network that is prepared to assist them during the tough times, and celebrate with them in the joyful times — as there will be plenty of both!

Providing a Supportive Home All of Indiana’s waiting children have come from “hard places,” and need parents who will support them in overcoming these challenges

throughout their life, Carter explains. “Many have endured neglect or abuse, and all have experienced the trauma of having to leave their home,” Carter says.” But, all of Indiana’s waiting children also have this in common: they are children, with hopes and dreams, favorite foods and sports teams, unique talents and personalities. Though they may struggle to trust adults, they are loving and resilient and courageous. Their laughter can be contagious, and they can bring incredible joy to those around them!”

Parenting means being up for new adventures — and having a good sense of humor and a talent for keeping life in perspective can go a long way and help you celebrate the successes in an adoptive child’s life. “You’ll have to advocate for your child’s needs and be flexible enough to roll with unexpected changes, stresses, and challenges,” Carter says. “But children don’t need

perfect parents — just one or two individuals willing to meet the unique challenges of parenting and willing to make a lifetime commitment to them.”

Finding Adoptive Families for Indiana’s Longestwaiting Youth Organizations in Indiana and around the country are teaming up to find loving homes for older children. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a national nonprofit public charity, is partnering with the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) and The Villages of Indiana to expand the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program, which funds efforts to serve youth at risk of aging out of foster care without a family. These

youth include teenagers, children with special needs and siblings. “Every child, no matter their age, deserves the love of a family,” says Shannon Schumacher, president and CEO of The Villages of Indiana, an organization that provides training and education for foster families in Indy. “We never want to see children waiting to feel that love and the stability a family provides.” The Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program will be expanded in Indiana over the next three years. Efforts include hiring more recruiters to find homes for older foster youth. Currently, of the youth served by the program, 89% are older than age 8, and 22% have been in foster care more than four years. To date, the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program has found adoptive homes for more than 10,000 children across the United States, including 160 youth in Indiana.

Indy Parks Unveils New Mini-Pitch at Oscar Charleston Park For decades, Indy Parks spaces have welcomed park visitors of all ages to play, to run, to discover new skills and sports. Offering more than 2,400 programs throughout the year, our family centers, fitness spaces and sports fields allow countless chances for people of all ages to get outside, enjoy some fresh air and try something new. Indy Parks facilities feature basketball courts, football fields and baseball diamonds. And now, a soccer mini-pitch. This fall, we gathered with community members, sports leaders and local students to dedicate a mini-pitch at Oscar Charleston Park. It is one of 12 being installed nationwide as part of the Black Players for Change (BPC) and Black Women’s Player Collective (BWPC) Mini-Pitch Initiative, in partnership with the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Adidas and Musco Lighting. The goal of the initiative is to create more places to play in underserved communities and is part of a larger effort to remove systemic barriers that keep Black children from playing soccer.

The mini-pitches are being installed in communities that are important to BPC and BWPC members, like Ray Gaddis. The former Major League Soccer player and Indianapolis native knew that the kids of his hometown could benefit from having a mini-pitch in their backyard, so he joined with Indy Parks to find a space for one. Together, we decided that Oscar Charleston Park was the place. A lot of care went into the installation of this mini-pitch. Anchored to a tennis court in the heart of the park, we wanted to make sure it was a place that local kids wanted to be. The corners of the mini-pitch are bright and colorful, with murals painted by local artists depicting major Black influences in both Indianapolis and the sports world, including Oscar Charleston, Ray Gaddis, Briana Scurry, and Madam C.J. Walker. The mini-pitch will be accessible seven days per week from dawn until dusk at no cost to anybody who wants to use it, and Indy Parks is working with Gaddis and Indiana Soccer to plan future programs that make the best use of the space.

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY MICHELLE MASTRO

Local Spotlight: The Little Timmy Project

Addressing the maternal and infant health crisis one Hoosier community at a time. The organization’s first big initiative was the Little Mom Stop, a mobile unit that goes to areas of the state lacking resources. “One of the biggest issues is people just not knowing what resources they have available in their communities, and for those that have gaps, we attempt to provide them with more resources,” Kirkhoff says. The program is the next iteration from their Little Mom Shop, a free pantry full of parent and baby essentials. It was created through a community partnership with Cornerstone Lutheran Church in downtown Indianapolis.

The Little Timmy Project of Indianapolis helps fill gaps in maternal healthcare here in the Hoosier state. According to Katie Kirkhoff, president and cofounder of The Little Timmy Project, Indiana is ranked abysmally in terms of maternal and infant death: 47th in maternal death and 42nd in infant. “We are considered the south of the Midwest as far as our maternal/infant death rates,” Kirkhoff says. “Over a quarter of the state exists in a maternal care desert.” But how can this be? “There are people in rural communities that have to drive over an hour to get to their OB-GYN or to a laboring hospital. This is why people aren’t going,” Kirkhoff says. Other times, different obstacles present themselves. “In cities, on the other hand, black and brown women are dying all over the country. In Indianapolis, it is 3 to 4 times that national rate. Studies have shown that healthcare systems, doctors and nurses have implicit biases. Black women are being neglected in hospitals or told to wait. We see a big difference in how black and brown women are treated. It is definitely alarming. But the more we talk about it, the more we can make a change.”

32

INDYSCHILD.COM I November 2021

Helping to foster that difference, Kirkhoff founded The Little Timmy Project, after suffering a loss of her own: The traumatic loss of her son, Timmy, who passed away at 5 weeks old to SIDS. To cope through the grieving process, she started researching prenatal, newborn and pregnancy issues, leading her to build The Little Timmy Project, which offers collaborative efforts and advocacy for Hoosier communities. The organization’s goal is to promote positive pregnancy outcomes while addressing the maternal and infant health crisis in Indiana.

According to Kirkhoff, one of the bigger healthcare gaps is experienced by Indianapolis communities where non-English speakers, refugees and immigrants live. “We have several large Burmese populations around Indianapolis. And not having an ID or paperwork can be a barrier,” Kirkhoff says. “A lot of people who are undocumented don’t understand how to get a government ID. We receive a lot of those types of clients because we don’t require an ID, whereas a lot of organizations around Indy do require that. And people are scared to go.”

“With COVID, we saw an uptick in single moms losing their jobs, so we spent three months doing diaper drive-thrus,” Kirkhoff says. “We helped over 300 families. Our Little Mom Shop is full of toys and clothes, basically anything you can think of. We have baby food and formula, and every mom that comes to the shop, we can give them these things. Our pantry is based on donations, so people can help us by donating their unwanted items. We have seen an uptick in Goodwill not taking items because they are overloaded. We know parents are always trying to get rid of baby stuff. We can help get things to parents who really need help.” To find out more about The Little Timmy Project and to help, visit littletimmy.org.

SPECIAL NEEDS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Keeping Kids with Disabilities Safe Safety strategies to consider for your child with special needs.

danger when climbing and unable to understand he or she needs to stay away from them, and changing tables with buckles, if needed.

Anybody who has ever cared for a child knows that keeping them safe is a top priority. We all want our children to be happy, healthy and well, and this means setting up boundaries and parameters that are a good fit for our children. November is Child Safety Protection Month, so this is a great time to discuss all things safety.

When considering your child’s safety, it is important to think about your child’s unique needs. What environments are they in regularly? What are their needs in those environments? Do you have the proper safety equipment? And are all caregivers aware of any special safety needs your child may require?

Explore Your Child’s Environment Whether at home, in school, daycare, or before or after care, it is important to explore the environments your children regularly find themselves in. If your child is in a wheelchair, is the environment accessible for his or her needs? If your child mouths toys and other objects, do they have all small objects that could be potential choking hazards out of reach? Are there stairs your child may have trouble going up or down? Another thing to consider is your children’s clothing. You will want to be sure there aren’t long strings

34

INDYSCHILD.COM I November 2021

Inform Caregivers of Safety Procedures

they could get tangled in, or that could cause them to strip. Are they able to easily move about in their clothes?

According to the CDC: “Sometimes children are faced with unsafe situations, especially in new places. Children who have limited ability to move, see, hear or make decisions, and children who do not feel or understand pain might not realize that something is unsafe, or might have trouble getting away.” You will want to be sure to assess your child’s unique needs, with all of this in mind, when evaluating their environment.

Determine What Safety Equipment is Required It is important that the proper safety equipment is available for your child in all situations. When traveling in a car, you want to be sure your child is in the appropriate

car seat, or booster, for their age and weight. If you aren’t sure, you can always talk to the child’s pediatrician or a certified child passenger safety technician who can confirm whether or not their seat is best tailored to their needs. Other safety equipment to be sure you have on hand would be helmets for bike rides, life jackets when near water, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors (if your child is unable to hear, consider purchasing alarms with lights and vibrations), handrails and safety bars for children who may have trouble walking or fall often, outlet plugs, gates for stairs if your child is in

It’s important to communicate with all caregivers what your child’s unique needs are, and any potential hazards you may see. Consider walking through the classroom, or care facility, with the caregiver to look for any potential areas of harm. Talk about any obstacles your child may face during the day with regard to their safety. Everyone wants what is best for your child, and a little communication goes a long way.

Child safety is of the utmost importance, and can be a cause for anxiety for some parents. By being mindful of your child’s needs, assessing their environment, making sure the proper safety equipment is available and communicating any needs as they arise, you can rest assured that you are doing all that you can to protect your child.
