November is also National Adoption Month — a month dedicated to raising awareness about the critical need for adoptive families for children in foster care. Although many parents envision holding a baby in their arms, the need for loving families is especially urgent for kids over the age of 8, as they make up almost half of the youth who are seeking foster and adoptive homes. Have you considered adding an older child to your family? Turn to “Never Too Old for Family: Adopting an Older Child” on page 23 for some reasons why this could be a good choice for your family. Happy November!

The Secret Powers of Gratitude Help Kids Show Gratitude
Fun fact: Giving back to others helps heal your brain! Stress and trauma affect your brain but helping others can reverse the effects. Helping people helps us!
Showing gratitude is like spreading sunshine. Making other people happy helps their mental health, and it also helps our own! Here are four ideas for doing just that. 1. Give compliments to friends
Have you ever tried to explain a complex concept like gratitude to a 4-year-old? Ask them, “What are you grateful for?” and you’re likely to get a blank stare, or “Umm…” But ask them what makes them feel happy and warm inside and you’ll be rewarded with more examples than you can count. “My family!” “My dog!” “Visiting Grandma!” Teaching kids about gratitude early is incredibly important to their mental health. Focusing on the positive is the best natural mood enhancer we have. Who doesn’t want to be happy more often? Research shows that people who think about the good things in their life are not only happier, but healthier too. They feel more energized, sleep better, have stronger social connections, and feel better about themselves — including having fewer physical problems, medical symptoms and a stronger immune system.
2. Send thank-you notes 3. Give back to the community by volunteering
Helping kids with positive thinking helps them build a lifelong coping skill. It can be very empowering for children to have control over their emotions and mental wellness.
Feeling Gratitude vs Showing Gratitude So, your 4-year-old finally gets it — she’s happy and grateful for puppies, cheese and sometimes her brother. It’s important to focus on that positivity every day and help her become aware of things that make her happy, as well as things that don’t make her happy. She’s definitely NOT grateful for green beans. And that’s OK — we can shift the intention to being grateful that dad loves her and made her a healthy dinner.

Sometimes, it’s hard to find the things we’re grateful for. Parents can help kids identify moments of happiness throughout the day. Like anything, practice makes perfect. It’s important that you model your own gratitude. Share things you’re grateful for and demonstrate your gratitude. Kids will emulate what they see from you. Children are naturally grateful. We just need them to learn how to hold onto that positive feeling and spread it around the world!
4. Give back to the community by fundraising to help others for local charities, such as Dayton Children's, or another cause your child is excited about.

WORDS BY RACHAEL DUPREE
Learning through Music Turn up the beat and boost your child’s language development in the process.
M
usic is a universal experience. No matter what age or what culture, people use music to relate to one another, regulate emotions and form their identities. While it can’t be contested that music plays an important role in humans’ lives, research is also beginning to show us the critical role it plays in children’s language development. In fact, music has been called a language all its own — and one that kids can master before their native language takes shape.
As parents, we all want to give our children a head start on learning, and music just might be a fun and easy way to do that. And the good news is, you don’t have to be able to carry a tune yourself. Exposing your child to music can be as simple as turning on your favorite playlist at dinnertime or as involved as enrolling in an early-childhood music class, like Kindermusik or Music Together. However, there are also a number of small, intentional things you can do at home no matter your musical skill level to increase your child’s music competence and feed their developing brain.
Repeat, Repeat, Repeat “The rhythmic cadence and tonal changes of music spark an interest in the cadance and tone involved in everyday speech patterns,” says Cheryl Bruemmer, who has been an instructor for the early-childhood music program Kindermusik in Cincinnati for more than 19 years. “Often a child not yet confident in expressive language skills will engage in the repetitive phrases of a song without a similar hesitation.”
Neuroscientists at the Brain and Creativity Institute at University of Southern California are diving into why exactly this is. According to their research, which has been underway since 2012, music instruction speeds up the maturation of auditory pathways in the brain, which can, in turn speed up the development of language, reading and other skills. This is backed up by the research of Christina Zhao, a postdoctoral researcher at University of Washington’s Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences, who says that a child’s exposure to musical patterns can improve their ability to detect and predict speech patterns.
If your children ever want to hear the same song over and over and over again, don’t fret--they’re not doing it to annoy you. “Children thrive on repetition and need it to develop confidence,” Bruemmer says. Repeating the same song over the course of a day or even several weeks can encourage language development, but so can playing songs that have repetitive phrases or sounds. Nursery rhymes are particularly good for this, but some of your favorite music can be, too. “Just this week, I had a nanny tell me as we were discussing the development of early consonants in infants that when she heard the baby she cares for attempting the “b” sound, she played the oldie by the Beach Boys, “Barbara Ann,” in which the “b” sound is playfully repeated,” Bruemmer says. “Both the baby and older sibs delighted in practicing the sound as they heard the song!”
Experiment With Instruments In other words, the parts of the brain that process music and language are closely connected.
16
ohParent.com I November 2021
While listening to music at home, allow your children to explore its rhythmic patterns by laying out some simple instruments, like drums or shakers, for them to play with. If you don’t have instruments, create your own. Turn a pot and a wooden spoon into a drum and put beans into a plastic container as a rattle. Get curious with your child about the quality of sound those instruments make.
Say Their Name “Children are more likely to respond to music that is personal,” Bruemmer says. Try incorporating their name or names of family, friends or pets into songs you already know. For example, instead of singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” sing “Katie Has a Little Dog.” You can also make up songs about everyday experiences, such as washing dishes or driving in the car, by co-opting familiar tunes or creating your own.
Mix It Up Get outside of your comfort zone and switch up the type of music you play in the car or at home. Play a mix of rock, classical, jazz, and music from different world cultures. The diversity of genres will expose your child to a variety of meters and tonalities, which will not only help them appreciate a wider breadth of music in the long
run but will improve their sensory skills by creating new neural pathways.
Have Fun Music time should be joyful, and there are so many ways to make music a fun and enriching experience in your home. Have family dance parties to explore musical rhythms. Make up hand motions to your favorite songs to improve vocabulary. Play around with silly sounds to explore the range of the human voice. There is no one way to enjoy music.
Seize opportunities that arise in your everyday life to play and have fun with music, and you’ll be feeding your child’s developing brain with seemingly little effort involved.

Local Spotlight: Freestore Foodbank
This nonprofit provides food and services to children and families in Southwest Ohio and beyond. The Freestore Foodbank’s mission is to create a hunger-free, healthy and thriving community by partnering with the community to improve lives by eliminating hunger. The Freestore Foodbank offers nutritious food, a connection to needed support services and a pathway from crisis to stability. Southwest Ohio Parent spoke to Trisha Rayner, chief development officer & VP of external affairs at Freestore Foodbank, to learn more about this Cincinnati-based nonprofit.
How did the Freestore Foodbank get started? Freestore Foodbank began in 1971. Its early beginnings come with a story — a man with a heart to help others. Frank Gerson, a worker at Cincinnati’s incinerator, saw useable household items being tossed away. He began collecting those items and distributing them to disadvantaged families.
Who do you help in the community? Last year, Freestore Foodbank distributed more than 42 million meals to the 280,000 neighbors in our community who don’t know where they will find their next meal. Through Childhood Feeding programs such as School Pantries and weekend power packs, we are able to feed the 90,000 children in our community who are hungry.

struggling to find vital nutrition can select the items that fit the needs of their family, giving them one less thing to worry about as they work to make ends meet. The Liberty Street Market, open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.- 4 p.m., serves up to 300 families daily and more than 88,000 individuals annually. Please call our Customer Connection Center at (513) 241-1064 or visit us for more information on emergency food assistance.
How can people help the Freestore Foodbank?
Do you have a time of year that is busiest?
Every dollar donated to Freestore Foodbank is able to help provide three meals to the community. To donate, visit us at Freestore Foodbank.org or call us at (513) 482-3663.
Throughout the holiday season, we will distribute more than 9 million pounds of food throughout our 20 county service area in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
What do you have planned for the future? As we grow in the number of meals distributed in the community, we look forward to our new Community Resource and Distribution Center located just west of Downtown Cincinnati. This new location will allow Freestore Foodbank to expand our healthy food storage and distribution, double our workforce development graduates, and create a stronger infrastructure across our pantry network that currently consists of more than 500 community pantries, soup kitchens, school and hospital pantries, and shelters.
If families need help, how can they get it? Through our Customer Connection Center’s Liberty Street Market located at 112 E. Liberty Street in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati, Freestore Foodbank offers a choice pantry, much like a regular grocery store, to those in need. This means that families

Never Too Old for Family:
Adopting an Older Child Considering adoption? Don’t forget that there are older kids who need loving homes, too.
hen thinking about adoption, babies most often come to mind. But there are older kids who desperately need the love and stability of a family, too. In the U.S., about 45% of children who are in need of an adoptive home are 8 years old or older.
W
For children and youth in need of an adoptive family, finding a permanent home is invaluable. Many of them have been waiting for years, and are longing to have a family to call their own. Belonging is a basic human need, and many of the waiting children have not consistently experienced what it feels like to fall asleep knowing they are loved, wanted, safe and secure.
November 2021 I ohParent.com
23
Older Kids Need Homes, Too Some families shy away from adopting older youth because they want a younger child to experience “firsts” with. But parents who have adopted teens will tell you that there are still many firsts to experience with older children. In fact, sharing new memories with a teen can be even more special, because they can appreciate moments in an entirely different way.
A large number of children in southwest Ohio looking for foster and adoptive homes are older than 8 years old. And in fact, nearly all of the children and youth in HCKids — the adoption and foster care section of Hamilton County Children’s Services — are over the age of 10. “Right now, there are more than 400 children and youth in Hamilton County who need permanent families,” according to the HCKids website. “These are wonderful, loving kids who have so much to offer a family. They just need a chance.”
What’s Required of Prospective Families Applicants must be committed, tenacious, persistent and patient. Prospective parents must complete background checks, training and an interview/home study to help their social worker learn more about their ability to parent and provide a stable home. After the home study, applicants are provided with more specific information about the individual children available for adoption. Applicants will then be assigned an adoption caseworker who will help the child and family find a good match.
24
ohParent.com I November 2021
Finding loving homes for Ohio’s waiting children is the priority for adoption agencies across the state. But agencies also want to be realistic and honest with families about the process — to make sure the right family is matched with the right child. Any adoption, of a child of any age, is going to bring with it challenges. But adoptive parents also get to experience the joy of helping a child with homework, practicing driving or advising a teenager on choosing a college.
There are a lot of misconceptions about who can adopt. Many people think that sexual orientation, relationship status, or having a high income are factors that are considered, but that is not true. The most important thing is being able to provide a loving, stable, permanent home for a child or sibling group.
Adopting a child also requires a willingness to accept a child with a complex family history, learn new or different approaches to parenting, and know when to ask for support. Families interested in adopting older children and teens need to understand that they are making a commitment to the child for a lifetime, just as they would with a biological child.
THE FOSTER OPTION If you’re not ready to adopt, fostering is a great way to help children in need — especially older kids. In the state alone, there are nearly 16,000 Ohio children who live in foster homes. Of those children, 3,000 of them are waiting to be adopted. Of those 3,000 kids, around 1,200 are 13 years old or older.
All kids need people in their lives who will support them, and that is especiall true for kids in the foster system. “All of our kids have experienced some level of abuse or neglect,” according to HCKids. “They need your help to fulfill their potential and live happy, successful lives.”
But, all of Ohio’s waiting children also have this in common: they are children, with hopes and dreams, favorite foods and sports teams, unique talents and personalities. They are also loving and resilient and courageous. Their laughter can be contagious, and they can bring incredible joy to those around them. As a foster or adoptive parent, you can help a child live up to this potential.
Parenting means being up for new adventures. Having a good sense of humor and a talent for keeping life in perspective can go a long way and help you celebrate the successes in an adoptive child’s life. You’ll have to advocate for your child’s needs and be flexible enough to roll with unexpected changes, stresses and challenges. But children don’t need perfect parents — just individuals willing to meet the unique challenges of parenting and willing to make a lifetime commitment to them.

VOLUNTEERING OPP ORTUNITIE S
FOR KIDS Many local organizations in Southwest Ohio offer volunteer opportunities for the whole family. WORDS BY
JENNIFER THOMPSON
Looking for something to do with your family that’s different from movie night and will make a lasting impact? Volunteering as a family has countless benefits for everyone involved. When we serve alongside our children, we are showing them the power of supporting our community, being others-focused, and that when we come together with a goal in mind, incredible things can happen. It’s important for children to see they are not too young to help, and that kids can make a difference in their community, too! There are many local places where families are able to volunteer with their children. If you’ve been looking for a place to serve, look no further. Here are some options for you!
GO R M A N H ERITAG E FA R M 10052 Reading Rd., Evendale gormanfarm.org There are many individual and group volunteer opportunities at the Farm, including photography, gardening, animal care, painting, lawn care, general maintenance, trail upkeep, fence building, cleaning and more. Fill out an online form and set up a time for a volunteer orientation, where you will go on a tour of the Farm and learn more about the volunteer opportunities that are available, so you can find the perfect fit.
