The Gift That Keeps on Giving Want to know one of the quickest ways to feel like you’re a part of your community? Get a membership to a local place of interest. This could be a museum, zoo, art center, recreation center or any other place that tickles your and your family’s fancy. I say this because, when my family and I moved to the Midwest, that was one of the first things we did. My children were young — one was a baby and the other was a pre-preschooler — and we got a family membership to our local children’s museum, and another family membership to a history museum. Having those two memberships gave us a reason to get out of the house. It gave us a familiar destination to explore, and it gave us a place to go to burn off energy during the cold weather months. We especially got our money’s worth with our children’s museum membership. One week — when the weather was especially nasty, and my children were especially squirrelly, and we all needed to get out of the house — we visited the children’s museum five days in one week! Needless to say, my children have become very familiar

with some of our local museums, and they hold a special place in my family’s hearts. As the gift-giving season approaches, one of the best gifts you can give to your family (or another family) is the gift of a membership. A membership is the gift that keeps on giving! Cincy Sleepovers Cincy Sleepovers was born during the height of the pandemic. “Like many other families, we had a big family trip planned for 2020, and when the pandemic happened, our trip had to be canceled,” says Megan Redmond, co-owner and creator of Cincy Sleepovers with her husband, Kyle. “Instead, my husband planned an epic ‘staycation’ that included a luxury sleepover for our kids and their cousins. It was such a fun way to make staying home extra special.”
Cincy Sleepover themes are adorable! What are some of your favorite designs to create? I think it would have to be a tie between our “Come On Barbie, Let’s Go Party” theme and our “Harry Potter” theme. Not only are they very detailed and visually appealing, but they also bring back amazing memories of my own childhood. I know I would have loved either of those themes as a kid.

Greater Cincinnati Holiday Market Get into the holiday spirit and get your shopping started (or finished!) at the Greater Cincinnati Holiday Market, where you will find locally made gifts, decor, gourmet food, handmade baked goods, toys and more all in one spot. Practicing Positive Parenting empower them to make decisions and help them learn.
Being a parent is not always easy. While we love the children that we raise and care for, making decisions on how to raise them can be a challenge. Everywhere we turn, we see different advice and opinions on how to do things “right” for our children, which can be overwhelming. We know that as a parent or caregiver, you want to do what is best for your children. But how can you know what is “best” when it comes to managing their behavior? Positive parenting helps to create a positive atmosphere with clear expectations in order to decrease unwanted behaviors. When you’re faced with a challenging moment with your child, you can respond using positive parenting techniques. These techniques are just helpful tools for your parenting toolbox.
4. Set realistic expectations. When you are trying to incorporate positive parenting, beware of falling into the two extremes of having no expectations for your children and having very high expectations of their behavior. Realistic expectations can help you to better connect with your child. These expectations should be based on your child’s age and developmental level. Positive parenting doesn’t mean to ignore consequences when your child needs discipline. Consequences can help our children: ∙ Learn how to follow rules ∙ Learn right from wrong ∙ Keep them safe
How to Parent Positively Positive parenting is a parenting style based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs. Positive parenting techniques are now recognized and endorsed by many reputable medical institutions. Keep in mind that each child has their own unique temperament, needs and personality, and there is no “one-size fits all” approach to discipline and child-rearing. Here are four easy ways you can incorporate positive parenting to encourage your children to be their best selves. 1. Come up with consequences that teach.
∙ Give them an opportunity to choose the correct positive behavior Here is an example of providing helpful consequences: Your two children are playing with toys together, but one of them decides to hit the other. You can get down on their eye level and let the one who hit the other know that toys are for playing and not for hitting people. Remind them that hitting is not safe or kind. Then, tell them that if the hitting continues, they will no longer be able to play with cars for the rest of the day. If the child becomes upset by this, allow them to feel this emotion

for a few minutes, then offer alternative activities. 2. Model positive behavior. Positive parenting won’t be helpful with a “do what I say, not as I do” mindset. Modeling the positive behavior that you want to see in your children helps them to make positive choices. For example, if your child hasn’t been saying thank you lately but you’d like them to show more gratitude and be polite, you can start by doing the same thing yourself. 3. Remember, it’s OK to have rules. Positive parenting doesn’t mean that you have to say yes to everything or let your child do as they please. Structure and rules are helpful for a child’s development. If you have a child who seems resistant to following rules or directions, providing them with options is a great idea. Give two choices within your rules to
For example, you may have different expectations for a 7 year old child to get up and get themselves dressed in the morning than you would for a 3 year old. If you have a child that has developmental challenges, regardless of their age, they might still need some help getting dressed in the morning, so they will have a different expectation from your other children. Don’t forget to praise them, too!

Plus, weekly lessons are a great way to ensure the kid on your gift list will be prepared for the pool next summer. he strumming of a guitar, the trills of a flute, the pounding of drums — no matter the instrument, the magic of music has the ability to captivate and transport us. There are many benefits that come from learning to play an instrument, especially for children. Music lessons, while often thought of as an additional extracurricular activity, are actually a valuable investment in a child's future.
How Music Makes Kids Grow Music is a universal language. It’s more than just a series of notes — it also helps with mental, emotional and social growth.

Many studies have found a positive correlation between music education and cognitive development. A 2013 study conducted by researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital found that early music training can lead to changes in the brain that help in processing the integration of sound and movement.
Music has therapeutic qualities. Learning an instrument can be a source of pride, boosting a child's self-esteem. It also teaches patience and perseverance, as mastering an instrument takes time and dedicated practice. Children learn to handle frustrations, set goals and celebrate their achievements.
Children who learn to play an instrument tend to have a better memory, attention and problemsolving skills. Reading music, translating it to hand or finger movements, and making sound is a complex activity that stimulates multiple areas of the brain at the same time.
Social Skills Playing an instrument often involves group activities, like ensembles or bands. These can
help teach children teamwork, communication, and how to work with others.
Choosing the Perfect Music Lesson for Your Child There are so many options available today for young musicians that it might seem overwhelming to parents. But choosing the right lesson doesn’t have to be a difficult task.
Identify Your Child’s Interest Before diving into lessons, gauge your child's interest. Do they gravitate towards a particular instrument when watching performances, or is there an instrument they seem excited to try? It’s important to ensure that the instrument aligns with their interest in order to help them keep with it. Many music schools and band programs offer instrument try-ons to help kids find a good match. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (daytonperforming arts.org) reaches more than 65,000 music students annually. Check their website for upcoming events where children can learn more about the life of a professional musician.
Start Early, But Not Too Early While it helps to introduce children to music at a young age, pushing them too early might backfire. For instance, while a 4-year-old might be ready for a ukulele or a keyboard, they might find it challenging to handle a full-sized violin or saxophone.
Research the Teacher A teacher's expertise and teaching style play a significant role in a child's musical journey. Look for instructors who are knowledgeable and are good with children. It helps to attend a trial lesson or observe a class to ensure compatibility. Also consider things like the location, duration, cost, and the commitment involved. Some children (and parents) might be ready for intensive training, while others might want to start with shorter, more frequent sessions.
The Music Teachers National Association (mtna.org) is a great place to begin looking for a music instructor.
Consider Group vs. Individual Lessons Individual lessons provide tailored attention, but group lessons can be more interactive and fun, and allow children to learn from their peers. Depending on your child's personality and learning style, you can decide which setting might be best. School of Rock (schoolof rock.com) has several locations throughout the area that offer both individual and group lessons.
Stay Engaged Parents play a big role in their child's musical journey. Attend their recitals, listen to their practice sessions and provide constructive feedback. Your involvement can be motivating and encouraging to your child!
Hitting the Crescendo With music lessons, it's important to remember that the journey is more important than the destination. Whether your child goes on to become a professional musician or simply enjoys playing an instrument as a hobby, the skills and experiences gained are what truly count.

Local Spotlight: Life Food Pantry
Providing food, financial assistance and services to residents in Loveland and beyond. Since 1988, the Loveland Interfaith Effort (LIFE) Food Pantry has been serving the Loveland community by providing food and support for those less fortunate. Southwest Ohio Parent spoke to Linda Bergholz, the executive director of Life Food Pantry, to learn more about this organization that has been helping the community for decades.
Tell us how LIFE got started. A group within the Loveland community and nearby churches saw the need for assistance in this area. The Prince of Peace Lutheran graciously set aside a space to serve that need in the back of the facility, helping approximately 45 people with basic food items. The group was called the Shalom Initiative. It later separated into two groups with the Loveland Interfaith Effort (LIFE) Food Pantry growing and building daily.
How great is the need in the local community? Since the pandemic, the need tripled. We’ve increased the number of times folks can visit to every two weeks instead of once a month. The expression “too much month left at the end of my money” is true for most of our families. The majority of our clients are working, but we also

Hosting a food drive can be fun and rewarding. How can people host a drive? We can be contacted through our website (lifefoodpantry. org) through the “So you want to host a food drive?” link. From there, our food drive coordinators will help arrange dates and times for delivery to the pantry. Of course, we need lots of photos to post to say thank you!
have those with disabilities, the elderly and single parents with childcare issues. We run the gamut of experiences, and each family has its own set of concerns. Nothing is a one-size-fits-all.
What events do you have coming up? November brings Pass It On, a community event through the Loveland City Schools that provides food for our Thanksgiving Baskets. We work in partnership with the Northeast Community Church on the baskets — they provide the turkeys while we provide the “fixings.” Our Holiday Giving Shop is December 11-12, where families in the 45140 area code who are registered with the Pantry can shop for items for their families. From December 14-23, holiday meal bags are available for those same families: a ham or another variety of meat will be offered to make a full meal.
How can people support LIFE beyond hosting a food drive? Monetary donations are always needed, and it doesn’t have to be a lot. Just a $5 per month contribution will make a weekend food bag for our Tiger Food Pantry kids every month or a Senior Bag for our elderly clients. We also have corporate sponsorships available with links to our webpage and a posting of the company logo. Gift cards also help tremendously. For our Holiday Giving Shop, we have an Amazon Wish List of items needed (https://a.co/ 9mh5Lg0), or contact the pantry and we will be happy to work with you to fit your budget.

There are some cities that really get into the Christmas spirit — places that are bedecked with Christmas decorations, twinkling lights at dusk and bustling with holiday events. If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas but also want to get away, these six Midwest destinations will add some extra sparkle to your holiday memories this season. Plan a road trip to one of these family-friendly areas that really embrace the Christmas spirit!
French Lick Resort is the place for all things jolly this holiday season. The 50 Days of Lights begin with two grand tree lighting ceremonies and the holiday hoopla stretches all the way into the new year, with Thanksgiving feasts and Christmas cheer spread throughout. With family-friendly activities and a half-million lights brightening the resort, the holidays illuminate brightest at French Lick Resort.
Santa Claus, Indiana Like the name suggests, Santa Claus, Indiana, is perhaps the most famous of all the Christmas towns in the Midwest. Its claim to fame is Santa's Post Office, the only post office in the world with the Santa Claus name. Santa Claus, Indiana, is also home to many other attractions, including Santa's Toy Shop, Santa's Candy Castle, Santa's Stables and more. The 2023 Christmas season is packed with family-friendly events happening throughout the area, including parades and festivals.
Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin This charming lakeside town is bedecked with all-things merry each year, during the Old World Christmas Market at The Osthoff Resort, voted the No. 5 Best Holiday Market by USA Today's Readers' Choice in 2022. From horse-drawn wagon rides, ornament making and cookie decorating for children, breakfast with Santa or

a brunch with St. Nicholas and his reindeer, there is a Christmas activity for everyone.
Frankenmuth, Michigan In Frankenmuth, Christmas is a big deal all year round. The town is home to Bronner’s, the world’s largest Christmas store, which is open 361 days a year. This store with all-things Christmas is almost two football fields in size and has almost every imaginable ornament, decoration and trinket you can think of to add to your holiday collection. On weekends from Thanksgiving through midDecember, enjoy the Frankenmuth ChristKindleMarkt, midMichigan's largest open air holiday market.
Clifton, Ohio Historic Clifton Mill puts on a mesmerizing holiday light show every year, with more than 4 million lights strung along the outside of the historic mill, along the gorge and riverbanks, and in the surrounding trees and bridges. It’s worth the trip just to experience the lights, but you should also visit the Santa Claus Museum and the Miniature Village. Santa is there each night, checking his list, right up until Christmas.
Chicago, Illinois During the holidays, Chicago's Daley Plaza transforms into a European-style Christkindlemarkt. Visitors to this annual and free festival will find enter- tainment, shopping opportunities, German food and hot mulled wine. The festivities also extend to other parts of Chicago, too. Th e P ow e r of Foster Parenting Want to get started in foster care? Here’s what you need to know.
L
ooking to make a positive impact in a child's life? Foster care can be a challenging yet extremely rewarding experience. Families wishing to explore this path can learn more about the licensing requirements, responsibilities of foster parents, financial help for families, and emotional supports.
Becoming a Foster Parent “There are many factors to consider as a family moves through the foster care licensing process,” explains Ashley Metzler, LISW-S, director of foster care & adoption at Lighthouse Youth & Family Services. In Ohio, the minimum age to be eligible for a foster care license is 18 years old.

Other requirements include: ∙ May be single, married, or cohabitating ∙ Ohio residency and own or rent your home with at least two bedrooms ∙ Stable income to meet all household needs ∙ Qualified background checks for all family members aged 18 and older ∙ Separate bed for each child and separate bedrooms for children if there are boys and girls over age 5 ∙ Good physical and mental health of the caregivers ∙ A home free of hazardous conditions that can pass a fire inspection and safety audit “After contacting us, your first step will be to complete pre-service training,” Metzler says. “You will also have to obtain your Adult/ Infant/Child CPR first aid and AED certification.” Applicants will receive training that will introduce them to the child welfare system, trauma and trauma responses, policies and rules, understanding and managing behaviors, available supports, self-care, and other topics that will help prepare them for their first placement. Once all training is completed, an application may be submitted and then the home study process begins. This includes reference checks, a medical exam by a physician, background checks, and home assessment for you and your household. Families applying for foster care licensure generally complete the process in about 3 to 6 months.
Financial Help for Foster Families Foster families receive a monthly, tax-free reimbursement for children placed in the home. The monthly reimbursement, called a “per diem,” is calculated by a daily, fixed rate based on the child’s age and needs. Additionally, routine and necessary medical care for the child is almost always covered by Medicaid.
Resources are available to help foster families obtain childcare, meals, tuition-free enrichment programs and more. Eligible foster parents who work or attend school may apply for childcare assistance. Children 5 and younger are eligible for WIC and school-aged children may receive waived school fees and free lunches. Many volunteer groups, churches and service organizations offer occasional support to foster families such as meals, transportation, or even lawn care and leaf clean-up. Groups routinely offer gifts of athletic event tickets, new shoes and coats. Foster families can also seek free or reduced cost entry to entertainment, recreation, amusement parks, museums, tours, parks and lodging.
Emotional Support and Responsibilities Foster organizations often offer specialized support and training for foster families. “Foster parents are valuable members of our team,” Metzler says. “Their opinions and participation in assessment, goal setting, court proceedings, and team meetings are just a few ways they play a critical part in the child’s success.” Regular visits with a social worker, as well as training and support from the foster care staff, can help families navigate the foster care system. Families also have access to respite care, both on a regular schedule and on an emergency basis. A foster parent’s role is so much more than providing a safe, understanding and caring environment for a child while including them in their normal family experience. Many children in care require additional medical services, therapy, family visitation, case management, educational supports, and more. “It’s your job to help the child through the grieving and adjustment process that comes with being removed from their home,” Metzler says. Foster parents must meet annual and continuing requirements to maintain their license, such as training hours, safety certification, home inspections, and rule compliance. Relationships with the Birth Family Most children in foster care will have some type of planned visitation with their parents and/or family members. The court will determine the frequency and duration of family visits. “A JFS caseworker will assist you with determining the best way to establish boundaries while strengthening relationships with the youth's primary family,” Metzler explains. Stronger relationships between foster parents and the child's biological parents can help alleviate the child's loss and improve outcomes for all involved. Contact can vary from simple notes, emails, or phone calls to in-person meetings. The level of contact is determined case by case, depending on what’s most appropriate and comfortable for both the foster family and the child’s family. Foster care is not just a system — it's a community, a support network, and a lifeline for children in need. By opening our hearts and homes to these resilient young souls, we have the power to make a lasting impact on their lives and shape a brighter future for our community.
