Tis’ the season... Ready or not – ‘tis the season for cookie exchanges, holiday school parties, Elf on a Shelf, shopping and wrapping, then shopping some more; all the general frenzy and fun of the holidays. It’s a whirlwind that seems to start earlier and earlier every year. Whew. If you’re like me (and I suspect a lot of parents out there are) creating a memorable holiday for your kids becomes job #1 this time of year. And it can feel like a job at times. No doubt there’s plenty of fun to be had, but making all that fun can be a little exhausting. This is especially true if you started out setting the bar rather high in the beginning – because kids never forget! (“What do you mean we’re not making gingerbread houses again this year with a gingerbread family who lives there and then submitting it in a gingerbread competition?”) Here’s the lesson I’ve learned over the years when it comes to the lengths we go to as parents to make our kids happy during the holidays. The “must 06

2017
have” toys and big ticket experiences are generally forgotten as the years pass, but the traditions you keep – even small ones – are remembered. For us, it’s baking the same kinds of Christmas cookies together each year, drinking hot chocolate while we take a drive looking at the lights, watching Elf or A Christmas Story with a fire crackling in the fireplace and decorating the tree with Johnny Mathis crooning in the background. While other activities may be added in, these are the non-negotiables. These things are so embedded in our family history that I fully expect to see my grandchildren doing the same things someday. So while the gingerbread masterpiece has its place (which we actually did by the way), it really takes so much less, thankfully, to make the season merry and bright. Here’s wishing you a holiday filled with just what makes it special for your family – and permission to omit anything that doesn’t.
Happy holidays!

CHILDREN'S HEALTH // BRANDED CONTENT
BROUGHT TO YOU BY // RILEY CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION
She’s a Riley kid. He’s a Riley physician. #GiveHope at RileyKids.org
Born with a critical heart defect, she spent five weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health so her heart could be repaired.
Kroger and Circle Centre Mall are presenting sponsors of The Gift of Hope Happens Here. In addition, French Lick Resort will match any gift through December 31 up to $200,0000
He is the clinical director for Riley Hospital’s Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant team, commonly known as a bone marrow transplant. Riley Hospital is the only facility in the state offering this treatment to kids who need it. Her name is Averi Delgado, and she is 6 years old. She was lucky enough to be born near a pediatric hospital that can handle any type of heart defect. She also has Down syndrome, and the coordination of care she receives at Riley Hospital since the day she was born is second to none. His name is Dr. David Delgado and he is Averi’s dad. This father-daughter duo from Zionsville, Ind., illustrates the heart and healing that is the inspiration behind The Gift of Hope Happens Here. This year-end fundraising campaign shines a light on the incredible children’s hospital right here in Indiana. Riley Hospital is not just a good children’s hospital but a great one. Here are a few reasons why: • The vast majority of kids with cancer in Indiana are treated at Riley, treating over 200 new and 350 ongoing cases of pediatric cancer each year.
14
INDYSCHILD.COM // December
2017
• Riley Hospital is Indiana’s only comprehensive children’s research hospital, offering a complete spectrum of care to kids in all 92 counties. Everything from treating critical conditions like Averi’s heart defect to offering a full staff of Child Life Specialists, the “comfort experts” who treat a child’s emotional needs. • Riley is ranked in the top 10 U.S. Departments of Pediatrics in terms of federal funding from the National Institutes of Health. Today more than 200 staff members at the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research are developing new therapies for devastating childhood diseases. This holiday season, please make a gift at RileyKids.org. We need you to join our fight to give kids like Averi hope.

Age Appropriate Toys that Children Love! Kid-tested, kid-approved toys from The Children’s Museum It can be challenging to pick out gifts for the children in your life. You want to make sure that you find something engaging that captures the child’s attention and helps them learn or develop skills. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis helps make these choices easier for parents, grandparents and other friends and family. Kid-Tested, Kid-Approved is a fun annual event in which children visit the Museum Store and test thirty of the year’s hottest toys. After the kids try out the toys, they vote on their favorites. At the end of the event, the votes are tallied and the top ten toys are announced. This list can help you pick out gifts that will be sure to delight. This year’s top three winners are Stikball with Mitts, Stickbot Studio and Shout Out Hockey. Stikball with Mitts provides a unique way to play catch with flat pads that look like baseball gloves and balls that splat and stick on the faux glove. This toy helps kids develop their motor skills and coordination while having fun. If your kid loves movies or technology, Stikbot Studio will challenge their creativity and imagination. Kids can create a story with the Stikbots and make a movie with special effects and editing using a smartphone app. Shoot Out Hockey is a solid option for kids who love sports. With this table top toy they’ll take aim and shoot for a goal, but they’ll have to figure out how to get the puck past the goalie in this fast-paced game.

Looking for more ideas? Cathy Southerland, Museum Director of Early Childhood Education, suggests these things to consider when looking for age appropriate educational toys. • Newborn through 6 months: Infant toys should stimulate the senses of sight, sound and touch. • 6-12 months: Babies are starting to develop an awareness of cause and effect, so toys that offer this option are a hit.
• Toddlers: Toddlers are mobile and full of energy; they like physical, active toys that can inspire their curiosity. • Preschoolers: These kids love toys that stimulate their imaginations and interactive games they can play with peers and adults.
The Riley Children's Health Sports Legends Experience opens in March 2018 at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, but the store already carries a number of sports and Indiana team logo'd products to help you start a conversation about health and fitness.
• Elementary age children: This age range is looking for toys that allow them to explore, invent, build, create and solve problems. PHOTO CREDIT // The Children’s Museum of INDIANAPOLIS

He wanted to make it possible to control speed levels and cruise control with just his foot. Thus Cruze was born. (shop.quirky.com)

KEEP CALM
and merry on
Tips for handling holiday family stress WORDS BY // L auren L awson & Susan Bryant
Deck the halls with lots of family – and a hefty portion of holiday stress, too. ‘Tis the season for spending time with siblings, parents, aunts, uncles and cousins that we may not often see – sometimes for days on end in small quarters! There are bound to be a few challenging situations that pop up under these circumstances and we have some expert advice for handling them. Read on for helpful tips on how to keep your “merry-ness” this holiday season.
Kristen Pastrick, LCSW, LCAC Psychotherapist and Owner of KAP Counseling, LLC in Broad Ripple
SCENARIO #1 There’s something about going back to my parent’s house and being around my siblings that seems to make us all revert back to our previous (childish) selves. Although we’re grown adults now with families of our own, those old roles we played as kids (and some of those old hurts) still manifest themselves when we’re together. I know our kids are watching us – and I want to do better. How can I make this holiday go differently? Yes, this is so true! There IS something about going back to your childhood home that makes you revert back to your childlike self. The smell of your mother’s perfume, the sound of a squeaky bathroom door, the sight of a scratch you left on the kitchen floor; these are powerful triggers of memories and feelings which can quickly (and unconsciously) evoke the emotional responses and reactions of your childish self. Simply recognizing this and wanting to do better will help you pave the path to maintaining the boundaries of your adult self. Insight leads to new actions. Create a plan. Make a list of the actions and responses you want to avoid. Identify the things that are likely to trigger 22

you: your mother’s commentary on your hairstyle, your brother addressing you by the annoying nickname he coined at age 10, your sister using the last of your pricey shampoo, etc. Visualize yourself responding calmly and letting the irritation roll off of you. Practicing calm and rational responses will help you prevent an emotional reaction from slipping out. If you feel yourself being pulled into old family roles and dynamics, give yourself space to re-center. Take a walk. Offer to take the trash out. Do the dishes. Practice calm breathing and count to ten. Giving yourself a quick timeout can help you identify what you are feeling and be mindful of how you want to respond. Remind yourself to accept the things you cannot control and work on the things you can – your words and actions.
2017
SCENARIO #2 I love seeing all my nieces and nephews when we gather together for the holidays, except for one issue. My daughter, who is much younger than her cousins, always seems to get left out of the mix. She wants so much to be included in what they’re doing, but their conversations and interests are just not part of her world now. They’re nice kids and I don’t think they intentionally mean to ignore her, but it happens anyway. It makes it hard for my daughter (and me) to enjoy our time spent with family. What can we do? Nobody likes the feeling of being left out. Achieving a sense of belonging in a group is a basic psychological need. It appears that this situation is not likely intentionally happening. It seems like your daughter is in a different developmental stage in
comparison to her cousins. If you are comfortable, communicate your concerns to your siblings or your nieces and nephews. They may have noticed the same thing that you have and be able to help you with a solution. At the next holiday gathering, it could be helpful to provide activities that will allow your daughter and her cousins to connect despite age differences. A craft, game or movie might provide an environment where the cousins can all connect. Most importantly, talk to your daughter about how she has felt excluded in the past. Validate her experience and self-disclose about times you have felt excluded yourself. Studies show that feeling emotionally excluded is comparable to physical pain because of the way your brain processes the feeling. Obviously, feeling rejected isn’t exactly the same as stubbing your toe, but the pain is real. As a parent it is not your job to solve all of your child’s problems, but to be able to support her through life’s trials and tribulations. Your relationship with your daughter and other family members could grow through this problem.
Colleenia Korapatti, MA, LMHC Private Practice, Groff And Associates
A client once told me "worry is an investment in something that may not happen." Be careful not to let your anxious expectations affect the outcome of your gathering. When hosting an event in your home, you have dominion over the atmosphere and can set the tone for the evening. A peaceful way to initiate healthy conversation is to provide fun questions at the table such as, "What are you grateful for this year?" or "What is something you hope to cross off your bucket list in the year ahead?" Sparks fly in arguments when defensiveness pushes people away from one another. These questions bring people together because we have much more in common than we realize. Politics and religion may come up because that is what people are passionate about. Using "I statements" to express viewpoints allows for constructive dialogue. If communicated with love, openness and empathy, conversations about different perspectives on a topic can bring a group closer together while also broadening each participant's knowledge of the world.
SCENARIO #3
Anne Harton, MA, LMFTA Marriage and Family Therapist Associate Resident Family Counseling Associates
I’m hosting our big holiday dinner this year and I’m dreading the dinner table conversation I imagine will occur among our guests. Between my family and my husband’s family, we run the gamut of political, religious and social views – and many of those who will be in attendance are known to voice their beliefs very passionately. How do I keep sparks from flying and shift the focus to just celebrating the season together?
SCENARIO #4 My brother’s family goes all out for the holidays when it comes to presents with an unbelievable stockpile under the tree. My kids are of the age now that they notice the difference between the amount of gifts they receive versus what their cousins receive. I can’t very well ask my brother to reduce what he wants to give his children, but it does make for
some uncomfortable moments on Christmas morning. What’s the best way to handle this?
That's tough for sure! Is there a way where they could only give them a portion of their presents when you guys are around? Maybe a two-gift rule per person? Another option might be to host at your house in hopes they won't cart as much stuff over. However, both these options really are avoidance and don't truly address the situation. Generally speaking, kids respond best when we are up front and honest (without putting down others). You can explain that you guys set a budget and regardless of how much money you have you are going to stick to that. Many people incur a lot of debt at Christmas. It's never too early to start teaching our kids good financial sense! In the end, there will always be someone who gets bigger and better, even if it's not family. Reiterate that gifts aren't a sign of your love for someone and you will do your best to get them what they need and want, within limit and reason.
There’s no denying that the stress and pressure that often accompanies the holidays can bring out the “bah humbug” in us. To make your season more “merry and bright” set realistic expectations for time spent with family and think ahead about situations you anticipate being difficult and how you can address them. Then, enjoy this special time of year in whatever ways are meaningful to you. Happy holidays!

Indoor Activities for Kids with Special Needs Wintertime fun without the cold! School’s out, the holidays are in full swing and it’s getting just a little too chilly for kids to play outside long enough to get all their energy out – a perfect recipe for cabin fever! The challenge of what to do in this situation can be particularly tricky for parents of children on the autism spectrum, who need a place to burn off extra energy without becoming overstimulated. Here are some area indoor options designed with children with special needs in mind. Free Play It was going to be a long winter if Carter’s Play Place, an inclusive play gym in Westfield, had closed like owners feared it may have to this summer. But the beloved play space got a last-minute reprieve, and it will continue to be a great place for children of all abilities to get moving as the weather turns colder. Open seven days a week, kids can explore swings, climbing equipment, a trampoline and more for $10 ($8 for siblings; siblings under 2 are free) or take part in scheduled classes. More info: cartersplayplace.com Get jumping during Sensory Hour at Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park with locations in Fishers, Plainfield and on Indy’s south side. During the designated hour, the music is turned down and an adult can jump with their child for free. You can even hit all three locations in a month! In Fishers, Sensory Hour is on the second Monday of each month at 6 pm; on Indy’s South Side, it’s the second Tuesday of each month at 4 pm.; and in Plainfield, it’s the first Wednesday of each month at 4 pm. Children’s tickets are $8. Check each location’s website for details: www.skyzone.com/fishers; www.skyzone.com/indysouth; www.skyzone.com/plainfield

Holiday shopping for kids can be hard. They have so much already, and the latest toys and games lose their luster not long after their initial thrill. But there’s one gift you can give today that will increase in value as the years go by – a 529 college savings plan.
As we all know, the cost of sending kids to college continues to grow. That’s why it’s important to start saving while children are young. “Every little bit helps,” says Miller, “especially when the child is young and you have lots of time for that compounding and tax-deferred growth to work to your advantage.”
“A 529 is a type of account that allows people – parents, grandparents or relatives – to save for college education like undergrad or grad school,” says Brent Perry, a financial planner and owner of Piedmont Financial Advisors. “It’s one of the few accounts that has a double-tax benefit,” explains Marcus Miller, a financial advisor at Deerfield Financial Advisors. “The monies grow on a tax-deferred basis and then if withdrawn properly for college expenses, the withdraws themselves are tax-free as well.” Most states have 529 college savings plans. While the rules associated with 529 plans are the same from state to state, the tax benefits vary. Indiana has one of the most favorable incentives in the country. Bill Howell, Principal with Howell Financial Advisors, Inc. explains, “In Indiana if you open up an Indiana 529 account you will get a 20% tax credit for contributions of up to $5,000 in one calendar tax year.”

Some parents worry about the limitations of opening a college savings plan in a certain state. What if, for example, a child has an Indiana 529 plan but would like to go to school in California? “The Indiana plan doesn’t have to be used for Indiana schools only,” says Amelia West, a wealth advisor at Howell Financial Advisors. “It can be used anywhere.” Howell adds, “We have clients educating their children overseas using their Indiana 529 account.” West also points out that it’s not just college that 529 funds can be used for. “It can also be accredited vocational school and advanced training.”
It’s important to know that a 529 plan must be used for qualified educational expenses. “If you take the money out without using it for college, you have to pay taxes off of the growth and then you have to pay a 10% penalty,” says West. She points out, however, that if you no longer need the money because your child received a scholarship that you’ll pay taxes but not the penalty. And, if your child decides not to go to college, the funds can be transferred to another beneficiary, like a sibling.
For family and friends that want to contribute to a child’s education but aren’t the owner of their 529 account, the 529 Ugift program makes it easy to contribute. “You can go to the Ugift website and it is a way, essentially, to ease the administrative burden,” explains Perry. “A parent can open an account and then they can get a code and say, hey, if you want to contribute to the child’s account here is the code. If you make the contribution using the code it goes straight into their account.” “College is obviously expensive,” says Perry. “It’s going to rise much faster than inflation in the foreseeable future. So money that is set aside now and allowed to grow is going to be a huge benefit. You are helping a student not have to take out even more student loans once they get to college.”
While the rules associated with 529 plans are the same from state to state, the tax benefits vary. Indiana has one of the most favorable incentives in the country.

what do kids learn in preschool?
The range of developmental skills nurtured in quality programs From the outside, preschool might look like just fun and games- and it is! But inside the classroom, children are developing important emotional and social skills. Indy’s Child spoke with preschool teachers and administrators throughout the city to find out just what children learn in a preschool classroom, and why a preschool education can help lay the foundation for a child’s future success. “We all know that brain development is highest during the first three or four years of life,” says Janie Waldman, Early Childhood Director of Beth-El Zedeck Early Childhood Center. “So we give kids a foundation and a love of learning in a safe and happy environment both socially and academically.” 34

Angie Richardson, a pre-K teacher at Beth-El Zedeck, stresses that one of the most important things kids learn in preschool is socialization. “They’re learning to get along with their peers, they’re getting ready to develop strong physical, emotional and cognitive skills to get them to the next step.” Angela Smith, an assistant in the preschool classroom at Indiana Montessori Academy, says that the emphasis in her classroom is also a social one. “We teach our children to be aware of their own self and the community around them. They learn to be gracious and courteous so that they can be good friends in our classroom and then go out later in life and be good citizens in our community.” But, she adds, the kids also learn practical life skills like how to clean a table or prepare a snack for a friend.
And at The Orchard School, a progressive nature-based preschool, the focus is on helping kids build a sense of identity. “We want our kids to care for themselves and their identity, to see who they are as a part of a community and contribute. We want them to care enough now to advocate later,” says Heather Girton, a multi-age preschool teacher at The Orchard School. “Our mantra in our room is, ‘You can do hard things.’”
Waldman points out that preschool also plays another important role that parents may not be aware of. “Weaknesses are recognized early in the preschool classroom,” she says, “and early intervention can begin.” A typical day in a preschool classroom varies somewhat, depending on the school. The Orchard School has forty-two acres of land where kids can learn. “Our day will look different depending on what we are exploring for the day. The kids vote in the mornings about where to go, and they’re off,” says Girton. At Beth-El Zedeck they have a daily schedule they follow closely. This includes exposing children to math and language arts as well as cooperative play and free time. “In the morning we do some academics and we also look at social and emotional wellness,” says Richardson. “We teach them responsibility, to put their coat up and put folders away.” The experiences that children have in preschool help prepare them, both academically and socially, to enter elementary school. “The exposure to how to pace yourself in a day definitely gives kids a leg up when they go into kindergarten,” says Girton. “Experience and practical use of those self-care skills gives them the confidence and independence that is going to make the transition into school much easier.
Girton also stresses that the social and emotional skills that children learn in preschool are what makes this experience so important for any child, no matter where they receive their education. “Those are the things that pave the way for the academics to happen and it invests the child in their own learning.” When choosing a preschool for their child, parents may consider a number of factors. Location, cost, class size and the overall feel of the classroom all play a role in choosing a preschool classroom that works for your family. Girton suggests asking around and getting preschool recommendations and then going out and seeing the program with your own eyes. “A program worth looking at will have a lot of opportunities for you to come and visit.” Girton also says it’s important that you understand what the priorities are for each preschool that you are considering. “Every school has something different to offer and things that they emphasize,” she says. No matter which preschool you choose, your child will learn valuable social, emotional and self-help skills that will set the foundation for their years in the classroom. “Children are very impressionable and eager to learn,” says Smith. “So why not make good impressions and make sure they have good memories of how to learn?” A preschool education will help children form good academic and social habits and help them become more independent, too. Smith adds, “Preschool can really set three to six-year-olds up for life.”

COMMENTARY & PARENTING WORDS BY // DEB KRUPOWICZ
Ask the Teacher Students who need to move, separation anxiety and parental homework help
Q:
Sitting still has always been a challenge for our fourth-grade son, but at homework time it is especially hard. What can I do to help him sit down and do his work?
A:
For a child who has difficulty staying still during the regular school day, adding more stationary time at the end of the day is tough. After school, begin with a 15 minute break doing something active, like bike riding, shooting hoops or walking around the block. Don’t give in if he wants to hit the video games or get on a computer or his phone; that will not help with his need to be on the move.
36
INDYSCHILD.COM // December
2017
When it is time to start homework, encourage him to identify ways to move while working. He can put papers on a clip board and move from one spot to the next in between questions. As he reads, he can move to a new spot at the end of each page or section. If he is working on math, he can move after finishing a few problems. If changing locations while working makes concentration difficult, consider getting an under-the-desk pedal exerciser. Without leaving his seat, your son will be able to pedal as he works. Forcing your son to sit still will only lead to frustration and tension when he is already tired and harboring pent up energy. Finding creative ways to encourage movement while he works can help him accomplish needed tasks and release some energy at the same time.
Q:
Our kindergartner still struggles daily to separate from me at the start of the school day and takes quite a while to settle in. I have wondered about pulling her out and re-starting next year. How can I decide what is in her best interest long term?
A:
Before taking your daughter out of kindergarten, work with her teacher, the school counselor and the administration to develop a detailed plan for easing this transition for her. Come to a consensus on what strategies to try first. They may suggest a particular routine that your daughter can do at the beginning of each school day. It may also help to pair her with another student who is a few grades ahead of her to be her walk-in buddy.
Separation anxiety is something school personnel are very familiar with and probably have many ideas for how to address this situation with your daughter. Discuss with the teacher where your daughter is academically. If you find that she is achieving what her peers are, commit to doing everything you can to help her adjust to school and put the idea of removing her on the backburner. If, on the other hand, you learn that she is lagging significantly behind her peers, she may need more time before she is able to flourish in school.
Q:
How much help should I be giving my second grader on his homework? I have a tough time not looking over his shoulder as he is working and telling him when things are wrong.
With the teacher’s purpose in mind, you will be able to better define whether your role is to act as a supporter who sets a positive homework environment, a partner who assists with each problem or question, or as an observer from some distance away. It will be up to you to set the appropriate parameters that meet the intended purpose of the work.
A:
Begin by talking with your son’s teacher about her purpose for homework. She may want homework to be done with parent help to allow parents to have firsthand insight as to what is happening at school or to get a personal view of how their child works. She may, on the other hand, want to encourage independence in work. Her objective may be to help your son (and all of her students) develop some stamina and focus. She may have assigned the work to him so that he can practice skills that she has seen him struggling to master. Clarify whether she wants to see his personal results or if she would like for you to check his work and have him re-work assignments where you see problems.

Museum INvasion tours are intended for adults, but suitable for children ages 10 and up. To reserve your spot on this tour, please give them a call! Walk-ins are welcome when space is available.
