The Most Wonderful Time of the Year We’re officially in the midst of a great time of year – a time that people refer to as “the holidays.” To me, the holidays begin with the Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas and end on January 1, or the day I should start fulfilling my New Year’s resolutions. It’s a time filled with Thanksgiving leftovers and Christmas cookies. It’s a time for baking pies, drinking hot chocolate and eating … well, eating all the things, because it’s the holidays and you need to munch on something while watching the Hallmark Channel, right? (Did I mention that my New Year’s resolution will be hitting the gym consistently?)
The holidays are also a time for gift giving. If you haven’t yet found the perfect present, consider giving something that doesn’t come in a box: the gift of experiences. You’ll find lots of suggestions for thoughtful, memorable gifts in “Great Experience Gifts for Kids” on page 22 that will get your kids out of the house, learning stuff and making memories. Some of these ideas, such as memberships to local museums and zoos, are the gifts that keep on giving, because you can visit all year long. And if you’re looking to get into the holiday spirit, check out our events calendar on page 32. You’ll find some great places to celebrate the season around Cincinnati.

Call the Midwife Certified Nurse-Midwives help build a personal pregnancy and birthing experience at Trihealth Midwives have been assisting pregnancies and births for centuries. But what exactly is a nursemidwife, and what do they do? “Most women seek out a midwife because they are interested in a low-intervention approach to pregnancy and birth,” says Rebecca Ailstock, a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) with TriHealth. “For women who are in good health and have uncomplicated pregnancies, CNMs offer supportive, family-centered, evidence-based care with minimal intervention.” This individualized care is a big plus, especially during pregnancy, when so many experiences are new and there are so many questions. “We allow significant time for questions, and this helps to build autonomy and self-assurance for women during what can be one of the scariest times of their life.” Here are answers to some of the most common questions about Certified Nurse-Midwife care. Do midwives do more than deliver babies? Yes. Although nurse-midwives are known primarily for pregnancy and childbirth care, they also offer health care for women throughout their lives, including care for adolescents, contraception, family planning, menopause, annual exams and post-menopausal care. If I use a midwife, can I get an epidural? Yes. Midwives encourage women to develop their individual birth plan, which could be a birth with only non-medical pain management techniques or a plan that includes pain medication, including epidural or IV pain medication. Can midwives write prescriptions? Yes. Midwives can prescribe medications and have full prescriptive authority regulated by the state in which they practice. Do midwives perform home births? While a limited number of midwives will perform home births, most attended by nurse-midwives occur in a hospital setting.
Are midwives certified by the government? Yes. Nurse-midwives receive national certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). Nurse-midwives have national, state and hospital approved standards to be able to practice midwifery. Nurse-midwives have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, as well as a master’s degree with a specialty in midwifery. Can I have a water birth with my midwife? Some nurse-midwives do offer water birth in some settings, but TriHealth nurse-midwives offer water for comfort during labor, with the birth occurring outside the water. Water is most beneficial for women to help cope with the pain of labor and to shorten the end stage of labor. Will my midwives stay with me throughout my labor? Continuous presence during the labor period is a hallmark of midwifery, along with intermittent monitoring. Will my midwife perform a C-section if complications arise? If complications arise during pregnancy or during a delivery, an ob-gyn physician or maternal-fetal medicine specialist will be called in to perform a C-section, if necessary. Nurse-midwives at Bethesda North and Good Samaritan Hospitals always have a physician in the hospital available to perform emergency C-sections. However, your nurse-midwife will stay with you through delivery to offer emotional support and provide care during the postpartum period.

great experience gifts for kids Memorable gifts don't always have to be things – they can be experiences, too! WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
Do you remember the toys your child had to have last year? Probably not – and chances are, neither do they. Instead of wrapping yet another toy this holiday season, try giving a gift that won't get lost, broken or abandoned in the play room: a gift of experience. Here are some thoughtful, out-of-thebox ideas for gifts that will be remembered long after the holiday decorations have been put away.
22
Family Memberships Memberships to local museums, zoos and other attractions are the gifts that keep on giving all year long. Cincinnati is home to countless family-friendly places that offer memberships, so pick your favorite and look forward to exploring all year. As a bonus, many memberships come with added benefits, such as member-only hours, guided tours, food and gift shop discounts, and early access to special exhibits. For an even bigger bonus and bang for your buck, check whether your museum or center of choice is a
CINCINNATIPARENT.COM December 2018
member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (www.astc.org/passport). Members of ASTC-affiliated museums get free or discounted admission to other museums in the network. This is a boon for families who like to travel and explore new museums.
Classes & Lessons If you’re looking to give “the gift of doing,” then you’ll find that by gifting a class or lesson. Dance, swim, music, art, sports, fitness: If it exists, there is probably a local class your child can join to do more and learn more about it. You can gift lessons that you know your child
will love, or use this as an opportunity to introduce them to an entirely new activity. Even better: Gift a class that you and your child can do together. You’ll be learning and spending quality time together.
Tickets & Passes Tickets to a fun event, such as a family-friendly concert, sporting event or traveling show, can be an excellent holiday gift. Or, you can buy season tickets to a favorite venue, such as a theatre, orchestra or ballet company, and enjoy multiple performances throughout the year. The choice is yours and depends on your budget.
For thrill seekers, passes to an amusement park make a great gift idea. If the nearest amusement park is a far drive away, then make it a road-trip gift. Include the park tickets with a basket of goodies to enjoy in the car – think fun snacks, and maybe a game or two, such as Mad Libs or travel Bingo. Most of the time, you don’t have to travel far from home to give a great gift. You can have fun and make memories in your own community. Passes to a local ice skating or roller skating rink, bowling alley, miniature golf course, batting cage, indoor play center or trampoline park can make for a fun and festive night out with the family. Or, make it a movie night with tickets to see the newest animated film at a local movie theatre.
The Benefits of Experiential Gifts The research is in: Experiences, not stuff, makes us happier. According to a study by psychologists at San Francisco State University, people who spend money on experiences rather than material items felt like the money was better spent, and that make them feel happier. This season, consider giving gifts of experience – not just gifts of stuff. Not only will you cut down on the clutter that finds its way into your home (and the homes of others), but you might also find that giving experiences makes you happier, too. From museums to classes to activity centers and everything in between, the joy of experiencing new things with your family and making memories will last a lifetime.

HANDLING A
FRANTIC HOLIDAY SEASON
Here’s how to navigate four common stressful situations WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON
It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and some would argue, the most stressful. You vow that this year will be different. But how? There are cards to mail, presents to wrap, cookies to bake, parties and programs to attend, and let’s not forget all the festive, memorable outings you can’t possibly miss. How do you manage to fit all the magic of the holiday into just one little month without turning into the Grinch? “The challenges we face during the holidays often revolve around setting unrealistic expectations of yourself and others, and not establishing healthy boundaries,” says Allie McLaughlin, therapist and owner of Cincinnati Renewed Wellness. To help make this holiday season the winter wonderland you have been dreaming of (and help keep the Grinch at bay), we’ve asked two experts for advice on how to handle potentially stressful situations you may find yourself facing this time of year.
Stressful Situation #1 Every year, you and your spouse travel back home for Christmas. This year, you would like for your children to wake up in their own beds on Christmas day. More than likely, this will hurt your parents’ feelings. You are nervous to have the conversation, but feel strongly about the importance of making these special memories in your own home with your family. Amber Stevens, licensed clinical psychologist and owner of Bridge Psychotherapy and Wellness in Cincinnati: It is important to be upfront, transparent and clear with family members that this year, you and your partner have decided to stay home 24
CINCINNATIPARENT.COM December 2018
to celebrate the holidays. Do so in a way that acknowledges your parents’ likely feelings of disappointment or sadness, honor these feelings as valid, and express that you will miss them. Indicate that your decision is not to hurt them, and continue to reinforce your hope that they will understand. Perhaps offer a compromise by scheduling a time when everyone can video chat (i.e., while the children are opening presents from the grandparents) to help all family members still feel connected to one another. McLaughlin: Remember, your parents likely experienced something very similar when you were a child. This is a common life and family transition. Be confident in your decision that you made with your spouse and lean on each other when challenges arise. If you are open to the idea, it might be beneficial to provide the option for people to come to you. This alters the tradition of location but maintains the tradition of being together.
Stressful Situation #2 Money is tight and you have a lot of gifts to buy. You would like your family to start drawing names for a gift exchange instead of purchasing individual gifts, but nobody seems to be on board. Stevens: It’s hard when you feel like you’re in a different boat than everyone else, especially regarding finances. Ask your family if they would be willing to at least try the “drawing names” strategy for one year. If people don’t like it, you can always go back to the way it was before, or brainstorm another method. People are often closed off to suggestions like these because they are fearful of change. Remind them that no decision has to be
forever. Perhaps try to make it more fun by suggesting to draw two names: one for a serious gift and another name for a sillier, more playful gift. This allows people to gift to more than one person while also keeping it far more manageable financially. McLaughlin: This is challenging and uncomfortable because it involves the often-dreaded topic of money. There are ways of achieving your budget-friendly goal without the participation of everyone else. Set a gift budget and stick to your established boundaries. Opt for a discussion with family about other alternatives to assist with achieving a budget-friendly holiday season. Communication is key to establish expectations and facilitate mutual understanding. It’s OK if your decisions aren’t liked by everyone. Be confident in your choice, because it is allowing you to move through the season with less worry and stress.
not fulfill you, and 5 being for things that you genuinely enjoy. We have to start allowing ourselves to say “no” to things that drain our tank rather than fill it. Give yourself permission to reflect on what’s most important to you and for you, and then make decisions based on this. By stretching yourself too thin and self-inflicting pressure to accomplish everything, you lose out on the ability to meaningful engage with family and friends, which is what the holiday season is truly about. McLaughlin: Create a list of realistically achievable tasks, start doing one thing at a time and recognize your accomplishments as you achieve them. Recognizing your accomplishments will motivate you to continue working toward your goal. It’s also important to feel empowered to say no! It’s OK to set boundaries for yourself.
Stressful Situation #4 Stressful Situation #3 As the holidays are approaching and you begin to think about everything that needs to be accomplished, your anxiety begins to sky rocket. You want to be less frazzled and enjoy the season, but everything feels important. Maybe this will be the year you don't try to do it all. What do you say "no" to? Won't you be letting people down? Stevens: It’s so easy to get caught up in all of the pressures of the holiday season. But here is the thing: The idea that “everything has to be done” is an absolute fallacy. One way to challenge this convincing notion is to make a list of all the things you feel like you have to do. Next to each item, rate them on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being for stressful things that do
Both your and your husband’s parents are divorced. You have a LOT of family to visit and only so much time. It feels rushed to try to cram it all into two days and would prefer to get together either before or after the holiday. You aren't sure what your family will think and don't want to disrupt everyone's holiday plans. On the other hand, you don't think you can handle another year of rushing from place to place. Does the date we get together really matter? What matters is that we all spend quality time together. Right? Stevens: I am a big believer in the idea that “they can’t say yes unless you ask.” If you find yourself overwhelmed by the prospect of traveling to visit everyone, express this to your family. Share that visiting everyone has felt rushed
and you have found you miss out on spending quality, meaningful time together. Ask how they would feel if you altered the plans to allow for more quality time. Acknowledge that this would be different and perhaps difficult for others. But is this something they would be willing to try, even for just one year, to see how it feels? You can always reassess next year. If your family ultimately is not willing to compromise, I encourage you to still do what is best for you and your partner, even if it means pulling back from certain events. McLaughlin: Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries! It is so important to set your own personal boundaries so you can enjoy the holiday season. Discuss and agree upon a few schedule options with your partner that will allow you to enjoy the holidays. Then, present these options to your families. This allows them to have a choice in the plans, and facilitates the possibility for a compromise in the rescheduling or shifting of tradition. This may be changing the celebration days or alternating the location every year. Understand that you may not be able to please everyone with your new plans, and that is OK. You have to find a balance that works for you and your family.
Whether you bake 100 cookies and deliver them to every person you know, or choose not to bake a single thing – that’s OK. Have conversations and decide what is best for your family this holiday season. Not everything in life is Pinterest-perfect. The important thing is being with those you love, setting healthy boundaries and celebrating the beauty of the season as stress-free as possible – together.

WHERE TO
FIND SANTA
in Cincinnati
10 UNEXPECTED PLACES TO SPOT JOLLY OLD ST. NICK
WORDS BY SARAH MCCOSHAM
Cincinnati is clearly at the top of Santa’s “nice list.” All December long, the Jolly Elf can be found all around town – and not always where you’d expect him. Sure, Santa makes appearances at local malls and festivals, but he can also be found rappelling from downtown skyscrapers, ice skating on Fountain Square and even scuba diving at Newport Aquarium! Here’s our roundup of the best “unexpected” Santa sightings in Cincinnati this season.
Rappelling down skyscrapers You can’t command a sleigh through the skies and not be a bit of a daredevil! For Macy’s Downtown Dazzle (Dec. 1 and 8), head to Fountain Square at 6:30 pm to see Santa bravely rappelling down the side of the 525 Vine building in a spectacular free show that ends with Rozzi’s fireworks.
Riding a train Maybe it’s his cameo in The Polar Express, but it seems Mr. C has an affinity for all-things trains. You’ll find him sipping cocoa on LM&M Railroad’s North Pole Express (rides throughout December), 26
mugging for the camera at Christmas at EnterTRAINment Junction (through Jan. 1) and meeting his fans on Whitewater Valley Railroad’s Polar Express (through Dec. 16).
Living tiny Inspired by Tiny House Hunters, you can catch Santa living tiny in the Ohio National Victorian Village. One of the best “hidden gems” of the holiday season, the Victorian Village at Ohio Financial is a memorable outdoor event, featuring thousands of twinkling lights; miniature-sized, fully decorated Victorian-style buildings; cocoa and cookies; and
CINCINNATIPARENT.COM December 2018
free photos with St. Nick inside one of the Village’s cozy cottages. (The Village will be lit through December; however, Santa will only be on site Dec. 1, 6 and 7.)
At brunch It’s not all milk and cookies for Santa. You’ll find him at several local events chowing down on a tall stack! The annual Lunch with Santa event at Winton Woods (Dec. 9) features more than 25 kinds of breakfast foods, visits with Santa and a complimentary photo for each child. The Big Elf also visits
Dulle Park in Montgomery on Dec. 8 for a breakfast buffet that celebrates the real meaning of the season, with all proceeds benefitting the Holiday Family Fund. Craving milk and cookies? The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s Cookies with Santa event on Dec. 2 is your best bet!
Underwater Santa loves the North Pole, sure – but he also enjoys a tropical vacay from time to time. Water Wonderland with Scuba Santa at Newport Aquarium (through Dec. 31) is one of the most unique Santa
sightings in town, featuring Mr. C in his traditional suit and hat, plus a scuba mask instead of spectacles and flippers instead of boots! Your kids can visit Santa one-on-one at the Shark Ray Bay Theatre, where parents are welcome to snap a pic of this one-of-a-kind moment.
Rollin’ around the rink You can also spend some quality time with Santa on the ice during Santa Skates at the Fountain Square Ice Rink (Saturdays and Sundays from 12-1 pm through Dec. 22). Hey – Santa has to work off all those cookies somehow!
fashioned family fun, but with a modern twist: selfies with Santa! In addition to free (cellphone) pics with Santa, enjoy holiday and winter crafts all weekend long.
On stage Santa loves being the star of the show, and this December, you can catch him front and center at the Taft Theatre in The Children’s Theater of Cincinnati’s Santa Claus: The Musical! This delightfully fun show runs Dec. 8-16 and is sure to be a hit with kids young and old. (OK, so it’s not the real Mr. C, but Local 12’s Bob Herzog sure captures the holly, jolly spirit of the Big Guy!)
At story time Santa loves a great read – and not just The Night Before Christmas. Enjoy special story times with Santa at the Carrico/Fort Thomas Branch Library (Dec. 1) and the Boone County Public Library’s Main Branch on Dec. 9. But it’s not just Mr. C leading story time – Mrs. Claus will be reading to Cincinnati’s good girls and boys at the Carew Tower on Dec. 1 and 8, and Joseph-Beth in Rookwood on Dec. 3.
On a carousel ‘Round and around and around he goes! Carol Ann’s Carousel’s Santa-bration weekend (Dec. 21-23) promises to be lots of good, old-
With the animals The Cincinnati Zoo’s Festival of Lights is the most dazzling display in town, so of course you’ll find Santa there. At the Zoo’s 36th festival – “A Wild Wonderland” – Santa will be mugging for the camera starting at 4 pm each night, so be sure to come early to jingle and mingle with the Man in Red!
With Santa showing up all around town this December, be sure to remind your kids to be extra good: You never know when he’ll be watching!
