The Most Wonderful Time of the Year We’re officially in the midst of a great time of year – a time that people refer to as “the holidays.” To me, the holidays begin with the Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas and end on January 1, or the day I should start fulfilling my New Year’s resolutions. It’s a time filled with Thanksgiving leftovers and Christmas cookies. It’s a time for baking pies, drinking hot chocolate and eating … well, eating all the things, because it’s the holidays and you need to munch on something while watching the Hallmark Channel, right? (Did I mention that my New Year’s resolution will be hitting the gym consistently?) The holidays are also a time for gift giving. If you haven’t yet found the perfect present, consider giving something that doesn’t come in a box: the gift of experiences. You’ll find lots of suggestions

for thoughtful, memorable gifts in “Great Experience Gifts for Kids” on page 26 that will get your kids out of the house, learning stuff and making memories. Some of these ideas, such as memberships to local museums and zoos, are the gifts that keep on giving, because you can visit all year long. And if you’re looking to get into the holiday spirit, check out our events calendar on page 38. You’ll find some great places to celebrate the season around Indianapolis. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so go out and make the most of it!

BROUGHT TO YOU BY KENDALL POVILAITIS, INTERN, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS
Make Jolly Days a New Family Tradition Whether sipping from a cup of grandma’s hot apple cider or helping dad decorate the house with festive décor, these are the family moments that will be etched in a child’s mind and heart for a lifetime. For new parents, family traditions are more than fun activities to fill the day – they make a positive impact on a child’s development. “Family traditions aid in the formation of a child’s sense of self, and strengthen the family’s bond and connection to one another,” says Susan Michal, director of early childhood for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “This time together can provide comfort and security to our children.” The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis encourages togetherness by inviting parents and children to decorate, laugh, learn and play with one another during Jolly Days Winter Wonderland, starting on November 23, 2018. Jolly Days combines the joy of winter with festive activities, including learning how to care for wildlife at the North Pole, designing an elf costume and decorating a holiday treat in Patty Cakes’ Kitchen. The quality time spent in Jolly Days is a treat within itself. Parents and children can create memorable moments while racing down the 47-foot-long Yule Slide, launching a f luffy faux snowball or taking a picture with old Saint Nick.
12 INDYSCHILD.COM December 2018
But don’t let the activities end at Jolly Days! Below is a list of easy-to-do activities that can add some holiday “spice” to any family tradition.
Candy Cane Hunt Nothing’s wrong with a little family competition. Scatter candy canes throughout the house or backyard. The child with the most candy canes wins and can hide the treats for the next round.
Healthy Holiday Snack Hacks
Frame It!
Gooey cookies and thick pumpkin pies are some of the highlights during winter, but here’s a way to indulge in the holiday sweetness while incorporating healthy habits.
Make a DIY picture frame! Encourage children to decorate the outside of a frame with festive cutouts, glitter or paint. Homemade frames make great gifts, but can also be a tangible memory for the family to enjoy.
Cut bananas, kiwis or apples into circles and decorate them like cookies. Use almond-butter, peanut-butter or a hazelnut spread as the frosting. Add winter-inspired decorations, such as snowy coconut f lakes, ruby-red cranberries, or crushed peppermints to make the activity extra festive. Don’t forget to join in on the guilt-free fun!
Do a few of these things with your kids or grandkids, and you’re sure to make Santa’s nice list. Happy holidays!

BROUGHT TO YOU BY CARLA KNAPP, PUBLIC RELATIONS SPECIALIST WITH THE INDIANAPOLIS ZOO
Christmas at the Zoo Marks 50 Years of Holiday Memories Celebrating 50 years of holiday memories, Christmas at the Zoo presented by Donatos and Teachers Credit Union is bigger than ever this year with added days and extended hours. As the first zoo in the nation to host holiday lights, it’s become a tradition like no other to visit the Indianapolis Zoo and enjoy the season with loved ones. This year’s event will kick off Nov. 23. With Mondays and Tuesdays added in for the first time, the merriment will continue daily through Dec. 30, closed only on Christmas Eve and Day. The Zoo opens at noon and festivities go on each night from 5-9 pm, and until 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. As the sun sets, the warm glow of twinkling lights can be seen all over the Zoo, creating a magical nighttime experience. While taking in the lights, guests can sip on a cup of hot cocoa, sample delicious holiday treats, visit the campfires and enjoy the sounds of choirs singing.
14 INDYSCHILD.COM December 2018
Many of the Zoo’s more robust animals will be out late to enjoy the cooler weather, including tigers, red panda, brown bears, walrus and many others. Special animal keeper chats will help guests learn more about their favorite animals. Inside, find animals in the Dolphin Dome, Oceans and Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center. Under the Bicentennial Pavilion, Santa’s Village is the newest addition to this beloved holiday event. The little ones can share their wish list with Santa, and everyone in the family can decorate treats in Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen, encounter wintertime animals and take a turn through the Snowflakery mirror maze.
Christmas at the Zoo is free for Zoo members and included with regular Zoo admission. Discount tickets are available at participating Donatos and Teachers Credit Union locations and guests can save when they purchase tickets at IndianapolisZoo. com.

THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHT WORDS BY LAUREL PRICE
Local Spotlight: School on Wheels This Indy organization is leveling the educational playing field for students experiencing homelessness When you think of people experiencing homelessness, it is often the image of an adult begging on the street that comes to mind. Rarely do we see the faces of the 5,000 Marion County children who are affected by homelessness annually.
HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY HELP? We are always looking for volunteers who care about kids and care about their future. You don’t need a degree in education or a specific field to be a tutor. In fact, kids as young as 11 can tutor with a parent. The relationships that develop between the tutors and our families are powerful. We see kids running in to hug their tutors. I watched a mom interrupt a tutoring session to celebrate her kid getting a report card with straight As. That child got a standing ovation; it was incredibly motivating.
Sally Bindley recognized a need in the Indianapolis community 17 years ago when she founded School on Wheels. She was working as a school social worker and noticed a lack of educational resources provided to children experiencing homelessness. With the help of her mother, her best friend, and her best friend’s mother, Bindley began tutoring children in homeless shelters. What originated as a tutoring club has grown into an organization supported by a staff of 21 employees and more than 400 volunteers annually. Bindley explains to Indy’s Child how supporting this overlooked population can help stop the cycle of poverty and homelessness, and ensure the future successes of children. WHAT IS SCHOOL ON WHEELS? We provide one-on-one tutoring and academic support to children and families who are currently or formerly experiencing homelessness. Our team of 400 volunteers meet in school or shelter-based tutoring programs for one hour each week. The children we serve attend more than 100 different schools in Indianapolis, so it’s likely that your children attend school with a School on Wheels student.
If you can’t tutor, donations help us fund school uniforms, supplies, transportation and food. We even have kids who donate their birthday parties to support School on Wheels. It is our goal to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness, and we do that through education. We believe kids who are educated now have opportunities and doors opened to them that would otherwise be closed. One of the root causes of homelessness is a lack of education. We want to prevent our kids who are experiencing homelessness today from repeating that cycle tomorrow.
WHY IS ACADEMIC SUPPORT IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS? Homelessness impacts children in a variety of ways. They have increased school absences, and depending on where they are residing, they may not have an adequate place to do homework. They may be suffering from emotional trauma related to
the cause of homelessness. Children also change schools an average of three times while homeless, and it can take six months to recover academically with each move.
Children experiencing homelessness are between six to nine times more likely to repeat a grade, often leading to dropping out of school. Dropouts are at an increased risk of homelessness as adults. But 98 percent of children receiving support from School on Wheels are promoted to the next grade.
I want people to know that there are kids experiencing homelessness with caring parents, and we just need to level the playing field for them. The more that we talk about the fact that these kids and School on Wheels exists, the less likely it is that people will only see homelessness as that panhandler on the street.
Learn more about School on Wheels by calling 317-2029100, or visit https:// indyschoolonwheels.org.

HANDLING A
FRANTIC
HOLIDAY SEASON Here’s how to navigate four common stressful situations
WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON
It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and some would argue, the most stressful. You vow that this year will be different. But how? There are cards to mail, presents to wrap, cookies to bake, parties and programs to attend, and let’s not forget all the festive, memorable outings you can’t possibly miss. How do you manage to fit all the magic of the holiday into just one little month without turning into the Grinch? To help make this holiday season the winter wonderland you have been dreaming of (and help keep the Grinch at bay), we’ve asked two experts for advice on how to handle potentially stressful situations you may find yourself facing this time of year.
Stressful Situation #1 Every year, you and your spouse travel back home for Christmas. This year, you would like for your children to wake up in their own beds on Christmas day. More than likely, this will hurt your parents’ feelings. You are nervous to have the conversation, but feel strongly about the importance of making these special memories in your own home with your family. Kate A. Pedersen, MSW, LCSW, with CenterPoint Counseling: This situation can feel like a delicate dance. It's important to express your needs and wants. If you feel comfortable doing so, invite them to spend Christmas with your family for part, or all, of the day. They may jump at the chance to start traditions with the children. Refocusing on the little ones can be a refreshing change of pace.
24 INDYSCHILD.COM December 2018
Kate Fisch, LCSW, with Northside Mental Health: Most parents can relate to wanting their children to experience the magic of Christmas morning. Share your plans of staying home early, so they have time to get used to the idea. If they give you any push back, remind them of how special that experience was for you and how you would like to create those same experiences with your own kids – especially while they still believe in the magic of Christmas. Soon enough, all they will want for Christmas are Abercrombie and Fitch gift certificates, the latest Apple gadget and lots of space and independence. Let your parents know your plans (tell them, don’t ask), and remind them in just a few years (when the magic of Christmas has extinguished), you and your family might be open to traveling to see them for the holidays once again.
Stressful Situation #2 As the holidays are approaching and you begin to think about everything that needs to be accomplished, your anxiety begins to sky rocket. You want to be less frazzled and enjoy the season, but everything feels important. Maybe this will be the year you don't try to do it all. What do you say "no" to? Won't you be letting people down? Pedersen: The hustle and bustle can be exhilarating and exhausting, and the lack of presence with your loved ones will be felt. With each invitation to a party, tradition to continue, or meal to make, ask yourself, “Will this bring me peace and joy?” If the answer is “no” and feels out of obligation, do not do it. Do not overcommit and you won’t have to worry about letting others down. Also, make it a priority to not let yourself down. Do not allow family or friends to push you to do something after you have set a boundary.
Fisch: Thanks to all the media messages we are exposed to, we feel a lot of pressure these days to live up to false cultural expectations for the holiday season. Best advice: at all costs, please refrain from scrolling through your Facebook feed while watching HGTV, just after flipping through the holiday special issue of Better Homes and Gardens. Instead, take a moment to reflect on what the season really means to you, and say goodbye to activities and obligations that do not align with your own sense of holiday spirit. Most importantly, be OK with not doing it all. The anxiety created by trying to be a holiday superstar only takes us away from the moment.
StressfuL Situation #3 Both your and your husband’s parents are divorced. You have a LOT of family to visit and only so much time. It feels rushed to try to cram it all into two days and would prefer to get together either before or after the holiday. You aren't sure what your family will think and don't want to disrupt everyone's holiday plans. On the other hand, you don't think you can handle another year of rushing from place to place. Does the date we get together really matter? What matters is that we all spend quality time together. Right? Pedersen: Your parents made the decision to get divorced – not you. While you have tried to be amenable to going to multiple houses throughout your life - as an adult, you can set limits. Suggest other times to celebrate and gather. If you feel comfortable, invite one set of parents from each side for one holiday celebration and the other set for a different celebration. If you are lucky enough that your parents get along, you may not have to separate the holidays at all!
Fisch: Running around, ignoring what works best and trying to please everyone just creates feelings of resentment that last long after the season is over. Not worth it. Instead, take a moment to talk directly with your parents. Tell them about the toll it takes to try and visit everyone. Ask them for their advice. What would they do if in your situation? Regardless if you use their advice, you might get bonus points for asking; points that might cancel out hurt feelings later. In the end, you are not responsible for your parents’ feelings. If your parent’s feelings are hurt, empathize with their disappointment while simultaneously holding firm to reducing the holiday run around.
Stressful Situation #4 You have some extended family members who can get a little rowdy over the holidays. Sometimes they drink a little too much and speak a little too loudly about things that aren't always the best for little ears. They are highly opinionated and their opinions don't always align with your family beliefs and values. Pedersen: This situation is another delicate balance. It's important to model for your children tolerance and different points of view, and to discuss with your children why “in this house, we believe .” However, if you feel comfortable and are at your house, it could be a good opportunity to model setting boundaries. You can say to your extended family, “We don’t use that type of language here,” or “We don’t talk about people like that in this house.” Hopefully, your extended family will honor your wishes and it will feel as simple as saying something lighter like, “Please pass the salt and pepper.”
Fisch: This can be a tough situation. Talk to your kids beforehand about what to expect. This way, they know ahead of time that any misbehavior on the part of your extended family is not in line with your family's values and beliefs. Then, when Uncle Tim has one too many, and begins spouting off about some controversial topic, your kids will know not to take his behavior seriously. Alternatively, you can take a deep breath and just let it go. No matter your efforts, you cannot shield your kids forever. Instead, trust yourself as their parent and know that you will be there to help them sort out what is appropriate and what is not, based on your family’s personal beliefs and value system. Of course, if all else fails, you can always plan to be the first to arrive at the family event and leave early. Alcohol-infused family shenanigans tend to occur towards the end of the event. Hopefully, you will be long gone beforehand.
Whether you bake 100 cookies and deliver them to every person you know, or choose not to bake a single thing – that’s OK. Have conversations and decide what is best for your family this holiday season. Not everything in life is Pinterest-perfect. The important thing is being with those you love, setting healthy boundaries and celebrating the beauty of the season as stress-free as possible – together.

great experience gifts for kids Memorable gifts don't always have to be things – they can be experiences, too!
WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
Family Memberships
Do you remember the toys your child had to have last year? Probably not – and chances are, neither do they. Instead of wrapping yet another toy this holiday season, try giving a gift that won't get lost, broken or abandoned in the play room: a gift of experience. Here are some thoughtful, out-of-the-box ideas for gifts that will be remembered long after the holiday decorations have been put away.
Memberships to local museums, zoos and other attractions are the gifts that keep on giving all year long. Indianapolis is home to countless family-friendly places that offer memberships, so pick your favorite and look forward to exploring all year. As a bonus, many memberships come with added benefits, such as member-only hours, guided tours, food and gift shop discounts, and early access to special exhibits.
26 INDYSCHILD.COM December 2018
For an even bigger bonus and bang for your buck, check whether your museum or center of choice is a member of the Association of Science-
Technology Centers (www.astc.org/passport). Members of ASTC-affiliated museums get free or discounted admission to other museums in the network. This is a boon for families who like to travel and explore new museums.
Classes & Lessons If you’re looking to give “the gift of doing,” then you’ll find that by gifting a class or lesson. Dance, swim, music, art, sports, fitness: If it exists, there is probably a local class your child can join to do more and learn more about it. You can gift lessons that you know your child will love, or use this as
December 2018 INDYSCHILD.COM 27
an opportunity to introduce them to an entirely new activity. Even better: Gift a class that you and your child can do together. You’ll be learning and spending quality time together.

Tickets & Passes Tickets to a fun event, such as a familyfriendly concert, sporting event or traveling show, can be an excellent holiday gift. Or, you can buy season tickets to a favorite venue, such as a theatre, orchestra or ballet company, and enjoy multiple performances throughout the year. The choice is yours and depends on your budget. For thrill seekers, passes to an amusement park make a great gift idea. If the nearest amusement park is a far drive away, then make it a road-trip gift. Include the park tickets with a basket of goodies to enjoy in the car – think fun snacks, and maybe a game or two, such as Mad Libs or travel Bingo.

Most of the time, you don’t have to travel far from home to give a great gift. You can have fun and make memories in your own community. Passes to a local ice skating or roller skating rink, bowling alley, miniature golf course, batting cage, indoor play center or trampoline park can make for a fun and festive night out with the family. Or, make it a movie night with tickets to see the newest animated film at a local movie theatre.

The Benefits of Experiential Gifts The research is in: Experiences, not stuff, makes us happier. According to a study by psychologists at San Francisco State University, people who spend money on experiences rather than material items felt like the money was better spent, and that make them feel happier. This season, consider giving gifts of experience – not just gifts of stuff. Not only will you cut down on the clutter that finds its way into your home (and the homes of others), but you might also find that giving experiences makes you happier, too. From museums to classes to activity centers and everything in between, the joy of experiencing new things with your family and making memories will last a lifetime. 28 INDYSCHILD.COM December 2018

Ask the Teacher
Essay help, holiday mood swings and cultural celebrations
Q:
OUR SIXTH-GRADE SON IS ALWAYS DISSATISFIED WITH THE GRADES HE GETS ON HIS ESSAYS AND DOES NOT SEEM TO KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. HE SEEMS MOTIVATED, BUT HE DOESN’T HAVE A CLUE HOW TO IMPROVE. HOW CAN WE HELP HIM?
A:
Your son’s desire to improve his work is more than half the battle! Help him to analyze the comments and marks the teacher has made on the last few pieces he has written. Begin by looking for trends to determine if his errors are in grammar, usage or spelling, or if his ideas are not expressed clearly. Make a chart with the title of each essay down the left hand side and spelling, capitalization, punctuation, subject/verb agreement, run-ons and fragments in one section and another section for vocabulary errors and clarity across the top so that he can see where to concentrate his efforts. If his graded work does not include comments or suggestions about how to improve, he should meet with his teacher. This is a wonderful opportunity for him to demonstrate his sincere interest in improving his writing. After looking over his own work carefully and doing his best to remove any defensiveness from his tone, he should approach his teacher and ask for his or her help in improving. He might explain that he is interested in producing better work (removing the focus from the grade itself and would like the teacher’s input on the best place to start. He should be willing to ask for some specific ideas using the work he has already completed. When the next essay is assigned, he should work at incorporating that advice into his
34 INDYSCHILD.COM December 2018
work. At the rough draft stage, he should consult the teacher to see if he is on the right track.
Q:
THE HOLIDAY SEASON SEEMS TO BRING OUT SUCH BIG MOOD SWINGS IN MY FOURTHGRADE DAUGHTER THAT SHE SEEMS TO MISS OUT ON A GREAT DEAL OF THE FUN. IS THERE A WAY I CAN HELP HER TO FOCUS ON THE JOY OF THE SEASON?
A:
The parties, celebrations and other special events of the holidays can present a mixed bag for children. It is hard for them to handle the disrupted schedules, the unusual changes in diet, and the stress of different environments that are often part of this time of year. Each person’s ability to tolerate these changes to the norm is as different as the individuals themselves. Your daughter’s mood swings indicate that she struggles to handle all of these changes. First and foremost, be sure that she is getting enough rest. That is such a key component to handling everything else, normal and beyond! Nutritious food can play a big part in how a child feels physically but may be made evident in behavior changes.
As adults, we want to create such special holiday experiences for our children that we build an atmosphere of anticipation and expectation. For some children it simply creates stress when they do not know what to expect or how to react. Perhaps your daughter needs some guidance that allows her to focus on a simple aspect of an event to prevent her from feeling overwhelmed or disappointed. That may help her to experience the joy you hoped she would find in the event.
Q:
WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MY ELEMENTARY CHILDREN UNDERSTAND THAT NOT EVERYONE HAS THE SAME TRADITIONS AND CELEBRATIONS THAT WE DO DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR?
A:
Learning about cultural differences and religious practices is one of the greatest introductions to understanding the wonder of the United States, as well as establishing a foundation for appreciation of global uniqueness. A deep understanding of our “melting pot” may be beyond their ability to conceptualize, so start simply. Begin by talking about all of the ways that you celebrate birthdays in your own family and how that compares to how other families you know celebrate. Discuss traditions that you have that are unique to your family, such as having pancakes every Saturday morning or getting a new outfit for the first day of school. This perspective may be enough to help your young children understand that each family has its own way of acknowledging special days. Your children’s curiosity could be the door that opens a special learning opportunity. There are so many wonderful books that explain traditions and practices of world cultures that you and your children could explore together. “Children Just Like Me: Celebrations!” by Anabel Kindersley is just one example of a book packed with great pictures and explanations that will provide a wonderful introduction to help them understand and come to appreciate our cultural differences.
