Giving Adventures I am blessed because I married into a very thoughtful and generous family. I could name a hundred reasons why my in-laws are the best, but there is one example that stands out around this time every year. Each Christmas for the past few years, my sister-in-law has gifted us a family membership to either the zoo or a local museum. She has two children of her own, and although her children are now adults, she remembers what it was like to be bombarded with toys, gadgets, gizmos and stuff during the holidays. So, when Christmas rolls around, she has taken it upon herself to not give my family more things. Instead, she gives us memories and experiences, in the form of a membership that we can use all year long. And use it, we do! I am not ashamed to say that last year, we used our membership to visit our local museum every day for five days straight. (By the end of that week, I’m pretty sure everyone who worked there knew our names.) Some days, we would pop in for an hour and check out one exhibit. Other
visits, we would stay all day. This flexibility is one of the benefits of having a membership. And when you’re a parent of young children like I am, having that flexibility is a gift itself. As you can see, I’m a big fan of giving — and receiving! — experiences as gifts. If you need some experiential gift ideas for your loved ones this season, turn to “Give the Gift of Adventure” on page 22. (Or if you want to give a gentle hint to your loved ones, show them this article!) It’s filled with ideas for gifting experiences all around Indy. From museum memberships to classes to camps, there’s something for every family that will allow everyone to spend quality time together. These are the kinds of gifts that keep on giving!
Have a great time making memories this season!

HIDDEN GEMS
WORDS BY WHITNEY RIGGS
The Turquoise Tables Don’t be surprised if you see strangers gathering around a blue table to socialize and play games together. That’s because the Turquoise Table movement, a national project to create community among residents and visitors, is happening in Hamilton County with the help of local art leaders.
The Turquoise Table movement focuses on clustering a series of tables to become a meeting place — like the old village well used to be — where people can come together to hang out and “do life together.”
The tables offer games like Jenga, chess and checkers, and are positioned around Hamilton County’s five participating
12

communities: Carmel, Cicero, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield. They will be moved around in order to engage many different groups of people.
“The project is the first crosscommunity collaborative arts initiative in Hamilton County and is a reminder as to how important community and neighborhood conversations are,” says Brenda Myers, CEO and president of Hamilton County Tourism, which sponsored the movement.
The tables, which meet ADA standards, are located at Quaker Park in Westfield, Pocket Park in Cicero, Federal Hill Commons in Noblesville, Sophia Square in Carmel and the Nickel Plate District in Fishers. Eventually, they will be moved to include other areas of the county.
PARENTING IN THE KIDWEST
WORDS BY RIANE KONC
The Science of Sleep As someone who deals with occasional bouts of insomnia, I’ve read a lot of the literature (by literature, of course, I mean “message boards on Google”) about how to promote a good night’s sleep. When adults are giving tips to other adults on how to achieve a good night’s sleep, they typically sound something like this: ∙ Limit caffeine intake ∙ Stop using screens two hours before going to bed ∙ Try to sleep and wake at consistent times They’re all good tips, definitely the sort that adults give to other adults.
But one of the issues these lists fail to address is that there is another cause for my difficulty sleeping. She’s about 39” tall, has bright red hair, and declares to anyone who will listen that she’s “not really into sleeping.”
A Four-Year-Old’s Advice for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep 1. Bathtime screaming. Scream about having to take a before-bed bath for 20 minutes longer than the bath actually takes. All the screaming will wear you out and prepare you for slumber. 2. Diet. Pre-bedtime snacking is crucial. And remember: The ideal time for snacking is immediately after brushing your teeth. 3. Relax. Drink a nice herbal tea meant to support sleep. By “herbal tea,” we mean “juicebox full of sugar.” 4. Talk. Save all of your deep, existential questions for right as your parents are trying to deposit you in bed. If they don’t take the bait, try asking them one last simple question, like, “Who made the world?” or “Do you truly love me?” 5. Exercise. Has your mom seen your latest silly dance? Mid-pajamas is the ideal time to show her your moves. Nighty-night!
My daughter has struggled to sleep since she was born. I can’t help but think that if she were a sleep doctor, her sleep recommendations would read a little differently.

AROUND TOWN
WORDS BY KIMBERLY HARMS
Time Keeps on Ticking Parents constantly tell kids to wait a minute. But little ones don’t always understand what that means or that a minute is a measure of time. By the time they are 4 years old, children start to understand concepts like “before lunch” or “after we go to the store.” Actual “clock times” are still challenging to comprehend.
As we approach a new year, there is another fun way to explain time: with a countdown to the new year. The biggest water clock in North America can be found at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. There, families can watch the neon green and bright
blue clock drip down, drop by drop, to a new year on Dec. 31, 2019. The clock stands 26.5 feet tall and will help welcome 2020 at the familyfriendly hours of 12 pm and 1 pm. There will be a live band and New Year’s Eve swag while supplies last.
Educators say that you can help preschoolers learn by associating events — such as meals, bath time and bedtime — with time. For example, say things like, “It’s time to brush your teeth before we go to Grandma’s house” or “We will have dinner tonight after Daddy comes home from work.”
Families who can’t join that celebration can visit most days to listen to an actor interpreter explain in a kid-friendly way how time works with the water clock. The big orb-shaped balls represent one hour and the smaller discs represent two minutes. When it’s time to move forward to a new hour, visitors watch the water drain from the tubes to fill a new orb.
When it comes time to actually teach children how to tell time (ages 4-6), the choices of how to do so are endless. Dozens of devices have been used over the centuries, including candles, hourglasses, sundials, clocks with gears, watches, clock towers and astronomical clocks.
Digital clocks are probably the easiest with which to teach once little ones can identify numbers. Repetition helps, so say things like, “We eat lunch at 12:00” or “It will be time to go to bed at 7:00.”
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
The most familiar tools to identify on a traditional clock are the big and little hands on its face. So, say something like, “When the little hand is on the 6 and the big hand is on the 12, Mommy will be home.”

Give the Gift
O F ADVE NTU RE Make the holidays memorable by giving experiences as gifts. WORDS BY REBECCA TODD
I
t’s a great feeling for parents to see the delighted faces of their children on Christmas morning — their gleaming smiles as the toys begin to pile up. The next part of the morning is often a not-so-great feeling for parents, as it entails pulling out scissors, pliers, hammers and screwdrivers — and that’s just to get the toys out of the boxes. Then by Christmas evening, many of the presents have already been abandoned, at which point, the joy of the season does not seem quite so, well, joyful.
22
INDYSCHILD.COM I December 2019
“One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation,” says Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University who studies the effects of money and happiness. “We buy things to make us happy, and we succeed, but only for a while. New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them.”
The average child in the developed world owns over 200 toys but only plays with 12 of them on average per day. So, this year, consider replacing at least one or two of those toys with gifts of experience that will keep the joy of the season going throughout the year.
TICKETS AND PASSES Tickets or passes to theaters, sporting events, indoor water parks and even festivals and shows that take place later in the year are great gifts for children. Tickets to local movie theatres, putt-putt golf, trampoline parks and other activities that take place indoors can also make exciting gifts that can be used to break up the winter blues. Even a stay in a local hotel with a nice pool can be a fun adventure for a family during the winter months. In addition, the anticipation of the event in and of itself becomes part of the gift. The best part for gift-givers is that tickets to events and venues are often available to fit any budget, and are often discounted if you purchase well in advance.
MEMBERSHIPS Memberships to museums, zoos, local state parks and other attractions keep the holiday excitement going year around. Not only can you get memberships for the whole family to most of these places at a sizeable discount, several also include members-only benefits, such as extra discounts and special events. Let’s not forget about the added advantage of being able to skip long lines. As a bonus for the gift-giver, most memberships are available for purchase quickly and easily online.
CLASSES AND CAMPS Indianapolis and the surrounding areas offer many creative and athletic classes and camps for children. You can find classes for everything from music, theatre and dance to
gymnastics, swimming and baseball. For added enjoyment for you and your child, look for classes you can do with them or as a family.
Gift certificates for spring break and summer camps also make great gifts. Many unique camps are available, whether your child is interested in science and math or learning to build a house. It’s a great way to introduce children to something new, or to allow them to spend time doing activities they already love.
THE BENEFITS OF EXPERIENTIAL GIFTS Studies show that consumers derive value from anticipation, and that value tends to be greater for experiential gifts than for material purchases. As every parent has inevitably experienced at some point, the joy of material gifts fades quickly and even the most anticipated Christmas toys soon become another discarded heap in the corner.
Rather than scouring store shelves and the internet for those mosthave toys of the season, consider giving your child and your family the gift of new adventures and special memories instead. Neither of you will be sorry. The toys will be gone by next Christmas, but the memories of time spent together and experiencing new things can last a lifetime.

ometimes, you just don’t have the time, money or motivation to plan a big family trip for winter break. Fortunately, Indianapolis has lots of things for families to do when the weather turns cold. Here are some “staycation” ideas that will make you feel like a tourist in your own town.
Staying at a hotel will really get your family in the staycation mood! Look for a hotel with an indoor pool where you can splash the day away, or one with fun features. The Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station has unique Pullman Train Car rooms that let you experience a night in one of the original train cars that used to steam in and out of Union Station in the 1920s.

If you’re looking for a hotel that caters to young guests, check out the Omni Severin Hotel, also located in downtown Indy. Upon check in, kids receive a backpack filled with fun items, such as an activity book with stickers, crayons, 2-in-1 cards games, binoculars and a small tabletop game. Children also receive milk and cookies delivered to their room on the first night, and a full kids menu is available in the restaurant downstairs.
You and your family have probably visited The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, but now is your chance to really experience it, because there is so much more there than exhibits. Each day there are a variety of programs, shows and activities to participate in, such as children’s theatre productions in Lilly Theatre, which change frequently. There are also opportunities to join in a music class, learn more about dinosaurs with a hands-on demonstration, and rock out to a dance party. Best of all, all these extras are free with your paid admission.
Check TCM’s website (childrensmuseum.org) on the day of your visit to see what kind of fun you can expect that day. If you’re in the mood for a drive, check out the Muncie Children’s Museum, which is a short 70-minute trip from downtown Indy. Head west to visit the Terre Haute Children’s Museum, which is three floors and 26,000 square feet of science and technology fun for kids. South of Indy is where you will find kidscommons in Columbus, Indiana, a fun play space for kids that features a giant toilet bowl that you can climb into. A bonus about traveling to Columbus: Across the street from kidscommons is The Commons Playground, a huge (and free!) indoor playground that features a 35-foot-tall, jungle-gym climber.
If you need to get the winter wigglies out, spend the day jumping at a trampoline park at Sky Zone, gliding through the air at Zip City or practicing parkour moves and aerial skills at DEFY Extreme Air Sports.
For families looking for some activities that are a little slower in speed (but still fun!), check out Incrediplex, which features a big indoor climbing structure, bouncy houses, arcade games galore and a full restaurant. Mini golfers can practice their puttputt strokes indoors at GlowGolf Mini Golf in the Circle Centre Mall, or explore two floors of interactive exhibits, including sports simulators and a half-court 1930s replica gymnasium, at the NCAA Hall of Champions at White River State Park. Winter is also a great time to rediscover your favorite nature spots in a whole new way. When there is snow on the ground, head to Eagle Creek Park to try out cross-country skiing on the 2.5- and 3-mile trail that loops around the park. Then warm up at the Ornithology Center in the park, where you can sit and watch birds at the feeders or check out displays about local birds. It is totally possible to plan a fun, relaxing and no-stress winter staycation that rivals any far-away vacation destination. Have fun!

YEAR-ROUND SWIMMING Swimming isn’t just for warm-weather months. Make a splash this winter and swim indoors!
L
eaves crunch underfoot and a crisp wind ushers in brisk mornings. The sounds of summer — children laughing and splashing in a crystal-clear pool — have been stowed away along with our flip-flops and pool bags.
Except they don’t need to be stowed away. Even if a tropical vacation isn’t in the cards for your family this winter, you can make your children feel like they are on vacation by taking them to your local indoor pool for swim lessons and indoor swimming. The American Academy of Pediatrics supports swim lessons for most kids ages 4 and older. And yes, swim lessons do continue from summer into fall and even through those cold winter months. Here are some excellent reasons to continue swimming through the winter.

INDYSCHILD.COM I December 2019
Water Safety Should Always Be a Top Priority “Drowning is the No. 1 leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 4 and under,” says Lindsay Thayer, owner of Aqua-Tots in Indianapolis. “The fact is that swimming is a life skill that everyone needs to learn. Like most other learned skills, swimming takes time and practice. A child is not going to learn how to swim over the course of a quick summer practice session. Being a participant in a formal swim lesson program reduces the risk of drowning by 88%.”
Keep Them Active, Relaxed and Happy Swimming also promotes mental and physical health, Thayer says. It reduces stress, builds strength and increases energy. Swimming is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that involves multiple muscle groups. This kind of exercise is similar to running, in that it releases mood-boosting endorphins.
According to the American Council on Exercise, water supports 90% of one’s body weight. This makes swimming a wonderfully accessible sport for almost anyone at any age. Regular swimming practice during childhood may just lead to a lifetime of fitness.
In addition to being an excellent aerobic activity, swimming is also good for your child’s mental well-being. The intentional breathing that swimming requires mirrors meditative breathing. The synchronized breathing and movement is restorative and relaxing, while the quiet that one experiences under water is soothing.
Stay Sharp
Immunity Builder There is an old wives’ tale that getting wet in the winter will lead to the sniff les. Research shows the opposite. Exercise, nutritious eating and good sleeping habits are actually what keep kids healthy through cold and f lu season.
Taking weekly swim lessons is excellent exercise, which leads to awesome sleeping and healthful eating. It will lead to just excellent health in general.
During the cold months, it is a good idea to bundle up on your way to and from swim lessons. Always change your kids out of their suits, and make sure you have plenty of layers, including a warm hat.
Swimming might seem like riding a bike: Once you know how to do it, you just don’t forget it. With swimming, however, there are actually quite a few skills taught in a linear fashion. You can’t just be away from the pool for six months and expect to pick up right where you left off. In addition, to be a good swimmer, one needs practice. Lots of it.
Most indoor swimming pools keep their pools and decks very warm during the winter months. Many also provide hair and swim suit dryers. Be sure to bring a hair dryer, if the facility doesn’t provide one. After swim lessons, it is important to get your child as dry as possible, to keep them as warm as possible on the way home.
Andrew Joseph — area manager of three Goldfish Swim Schools in Carmel, Fishers and Greenwood — said that one of the biggest reasons to have your children continue swim lessons through the winter is that “it gets them ready for the summer!”
With so many excellent facilities in the area that offer swim lessons yearround, it will be easy to find a place to take your child for warmth, fun and exercise this winter.

S AV I N G F O R COLLEGE
BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, YOUR CHILD WILL BE ON THEIR WAY TO COLLEGE — SO START SAVING NOW! WORDS BY RACHAEL DUPREE
30
INDYSCHILD.COM I December 2019
W
hether your child is taking their first steps or headed to their first day of kindergarten, it can seem like time is flying by too fast. Before you know it, your sweet little toddler will be headed off to college, which leaves you with one very important question: How will you pay for it?
It’s no secret that a college education is expensive, and for the parent still buying diapers, the prospect of paying for college can be daunting. The good news is that the sooner you start saving — even if it’s just a little bit each month — the more you will have when your child is ready to fly the coop.
“Time is what really matters,” says Peter Dunn, aka Pete the Planner, an Indianapolis-based personal finance expert. “Twenty-five dollars, $50 or $100 per month is a good place to start. Running a calculator, $100 per month matters — that really pays off.”
While putting money into a savings account starting today can be a smart move, there are several savings plans, such as 529 Plans, Roth IRAs and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), that will help each dollar saved go even further by offering tax-free earnings that can be used toward college expenses.
CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS When looking at savings plans, it’s a good idea to have a basic understanding about how each operates so you can make the best financial decision for your family. Here are some factors to consider with each.
Withdrawal penalties/taxes: Each of these college savings plans has restrictions on how earnings can be withdrawn. While contributions for each of these accounts can be withdrawn at any time tax-free because the money is contributed after taxes, it’s important to remember that all withdrawals are a combination of contributions and earnings. To get the most bang for your buck, it’s wise to try to stay within the plan’s withdrawal guidelines to avoid unnecessary taxes and fees.
Account flexibility: When your children are young, it can be hard to know what your savings capability will be like and what type of college they will want attend, if they attend at all. Having an understanding of the flexibility you have with each account in regards to how withdrawals can be used, if accounts can be transferred, and how much you are allowed to contribute each year will help you make the best decision for your family.
How your FAFSA will be affected: Depending on the plan and who holds it, withdrawals may count as income that could put a dent in your financial aid possibilities. While this isn’t something to dwell on — money saved is better than money borrowed, after all — it’s something to consider if you anticipate needing additional help.
If you need some guidance in making investment decisions, it can be a good idea to seek out the advice of a financial planner or tax advisor. These professionals can help you think through these variables and others.
investment options and flexibility with contribution withdrawals. On the flip side, there are contribution limits ($6,000 under age 50) and withdrawals count as income on your financial aid application.
A LOOK AT THE PLANS
Coverdell ESA
Let’s take a closer look at the plans. Bear in mind that these aren’t the only options you have when it comes to saving for your children’s education, but these plans all offer college savings incentives that will benefit you over time.
Like the Roth, ESAs have a wider investment portfolio than the 529, but the downside is they are extremely limiting in their contributions — only $2,000 per year per student — and all contributions made after age 18 are subject to an excise tax. Also, all funds must be used by age 30 or transferred to another beneficiary to avoid penalties.
529 Plan State 529 plans are the most popular college savings investment option. While many states, including Indiana, offer tax incentives for using an in-state plan, you can open a plan in any state for use at qualified universities and colleges throughout the country. 529 plans have limited investment options but offer quite a bit of flexibility compared to the other plans listed here, including high contribution limits (currently $15,000), no age limits for distributions in most states, and easy transferral to another family member (including parents) if the student doesn’t use the funds. For students receiving scholarships, earnings can be withdrawn for non-qualified uses tax- and penalty-free.
KEEP THE CONVERSATION OPEN While your children are still young, there are a lot of unknowns about the future. Will they attend a state or private school? In-state or out? These variables can make saving feel a little like a gamble. Instead of focusing on the specifics, focus on their goals for the future. By keeping the conversation about college open, you’ll be able to better plan over time, as well as help your child make a college decision that makes sense for your family’s financial situation, perhaps by finding a less expensive program that will help them meet their career goals. And bear in mind, putting money away, whether for college or for another goal, can never hurt.
Roth IRA Roth IRAs are typically used for retirement savings, and therefore earnings are subject to a penalty if withdrawn before the account holder is 59½ years old unless used toward qualified educational expenses. Advantages of a Roth IRA over a 529 plan include wider December 2019 I INDYSCHILD.COM

TEENS & TWEENS
WORDS BY REBECCA HILL
A Giving Teen
How to teach your teenager about generosity. Recently, her daughter informed her that she had adopted a grandparent as a volunteer activity.
Kathy Shreve of Carmel wanted to connect her kids to other children in different countries. With the help of Unbound, an international nonprofit faith organization that helps connect families with other families in need, her family could communicate with other families through letter writing.
“My kids have learned about each other’s differences, but they’ve also found similarities,” Shreve says. “It gives them perspective on how fortunate we are, and how giving a little can make a big difference to someone else.”
What can parents do to teach their teens how to be generous in an age that doesn’t always value generosity? Here are a few ways.
Teach empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Not all children are adept at empathy — they must be taught first.
Zionsville's mom Teresa Fruits started taking her children on mission trips at an early age. These trips helped teach her kids that no one is entitled, Fruits says.

INDYSCHILD.COM I December 2019
Teach generosity early. Like with teaching children most things, the earlier a parent starts, the more a child understands and practices these deeds throughout their life.
Now that her children are in high school and college, they continue these trips on their own.
Be a good role model. A recent study found that parent role-modeling and conversations about giving were strongly related to an adolescent’s giving and volunteering habits. How? Through role modeling and conversations which, ultimately, socializes adolescents to charitable giving and volunteering.
“Parents can demonstrate generosity by helping family, helping neighbors, giving to charitable organizations and volunteering through an organization,” says Dr. Mark Ottoni-Wilhelm, professor of philanthropic studies at Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
The key to transmitting generosity, Ottoni-Wilhelm says, is to make sure that kids know that their parents are doing those things. So, to be good role models, parents who volunteer or give to charities should share their experiences with their kids.
Have a conversation about generosity. When kids act charitably, parents should point it out with praise, saying something like, “That was very generous of you.”
Betsy Morse, a five-year volunteer with the Mid-North Food Pantry in Indianapolis, says that her kids know that she and her husband have been active volunteers for years. “My kids have seen both of their parents in two different areas do volunteer work, so I do think that it will make them more aware and that they will volunteer more frequently,” she says.
Stephanie Seymour, a year-round volunteer for Operation Christmas Child, has encouraged her children from an early age to be generous.
“We have been packing shoeboxes for years,” says Seymour, who has seven children. “Now, all but one of mine are grown, and I have just one teen left. They pack their shoebox gifts but still come home for my family packing party.”
The fact is: The world needs generous people. Without charitable giving and volunteering, a lot of people would go without help, and a great many causes would go untended.

Handling the Holidays with Autism For children on the autism spectrum, this time of year can be overwhelming. It’s beginning to look, smell, sound and feel a lot like Christmas everywhere you go. Yes, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it can also be overwhelming for some. The break in routine, crowded stores, heightened sensory experiences and more can be an assault on the senses — especially for children with autism.
To help keep the stress at bay and ensure your days are merry and bright, we’ve asked Mary Maher, founder and CEO of Synapse Sitters in central Indiana, to share some tips on how she and her family handle the holiday stress. Maher and her husband have two children: a son who is 6 and a daughter who is 5. When her son was 3 years old, he was diagnosed with autism.
Find What Works for Your Child Maher agrees the holidays can certainly be a stressful and chaotic time of year for many people. She says this time of year can be especially difficult, at times, for her son who prefers a schedule and doesn’t like when his routine is interrupted.

emotions is the most important thing. He does a good job of calming himself down, because he knows it is difficult for us to help him otherwise.”
“He’s been in ABA [Applied Behavior Analysis] therapy for a few years and was taught coping and assessment skills,” Maher says. “This has been incredibly helpful during the moments he just wants to melt down.”
the picture, and how it relates to us. This helped us with potty training, getting ready each day, and going on errands and outings like going to visit Santa.”
With the holidays around the corner, you need to do what’s best for you and your family. Maher stresses that it’s important to know your limits and not feel like you have to do everything this holiday season. With good planning, communication and a few deep breaths along the way, you and your family can eliminate some holiday stress and hopefully have yourselves a merry little Christmas.
Coping with Travel Maher says she and her husband learned that their son loves calendars and clocks because they give him a sense of predictability. Because of this, they discuss his schedule each morning, and go over any changes that may occur as soon as possible. And this includes changes that may happen over the holiday season. In addition to calendars and clocks, the Maher family also use storyboards from time to time. “These are sequential pictures that explain an activity or event that will soon be happening,” Maher says. “We’ve found several online, that we can print and display in places where he can see them daily. We talk about what’s happening in
A big change that has the potential to seriously disrupt schedule and routine is travel. Over the holidays, many families find themselves traveling out of town, and the Maher family is no exception.
To prepare for travel, “We tell our son ‘We’re going to Michigan to visit your cousins on December 26,’” Maher says. “We will do this several weeks ahead of time, and repeat it several times before the trip. If plans change at the last minute, we’ll talk with him about it. We never just change plans and not tell him. If he starts to get anxious or upset, we’ll remind him to take some deep breaths. Once he’s calm, he can talk to us about why he’s upset. Acknowledging his
HOLIDAY DOS & DON’TS • DO take deep breaths. • DON’T be afraid to ask for help. • DON’T feel pressure to do what everyone else is doing. If your child doesn’t want to see Santa, then consider skipping that event this year. • DO know your child’s limits. The holidays should be enjoyable, not forced or stressful.

AROUND TOWN
WORDS BY CHARITY R. BARTLEY HOWARD
Local Spotlight: Pillows for Patients One kid’s idea brings comfort to cancer patients. thank you and they put the pillow behind their head. I walked around and had a chance to see them all using their pillows.
Third grader Abbi Zamani of Clinton, Indiana, creates pillows to comfort cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Hux Cancer Center in Terre Haute. Abbi was inspired to begin her project — Pillows for Patients — after her mother, Carlie, began treatment at the center for pancreatic cancer.
How can others help with your project? A few people have donated. A box of materials was sent to me following a feature about the project on Inside Edition. If anyone wants to donate, email my mom at carlievorek@ yahoo.com and she will set things up. We don’t ask anybody to pay for the pillows, so any donation helps. We appreciate it!
“When I went on my first appointment, they let us walk through,” says Carlie Zamani, Abbi’s mother. “We saw someone had made tiny port pillows for when patients ride in the car, and that is kinda how she got her idea. She said she could make something like that.”
Why did you decide to make pillows and not something else?
How long does it take to make one pillow? What is your process?
I know the chairs are very uncomfortable there because I have sat in them.
Indy’s Child talked with Abbi to learn more about her project and why she does it.
How did you learn to make pillows?
About 45 minutes. First, I have to have my grandma cut them. Then, I have to sew them with the sewing machine. Next, I unfold them and stuff them. Then, my grandma helps sew them up.
What inspired you to create Pillows for Patients? My mom. It made me think the people in Hux Cancer Center needed comfort.
A few years ago, my grandma taught me how to sew and I remembered how to do it.
How many pillows have you made and given away so far? I have made 185 and I’ve pretty much given most away.
Do you have a favorite pillow? I like the one with llamas and flowers. Then, the purple one because that is the color used when talking about pancreatic cancer.
What’s the most special moment for you since starting? I made pillows, and then went to Hux Cancer Center to hand them out to patients. I told them my story and talked to them. They all said

What would you like other children to know about doing a project such as this? You have to have a humble heart. No matter what you do, you need to be dedicated. Pick a project that means a lot to you. You need to have a really good reason to do it. I have a really good reason to do this project.
