Holiday Traditions We all have our favorite holiday traditions. Mine — like almost all of my favorite traditions — includes food. I grew up eating tamales around the holidays. My mom and dad would buy or make dozens of tamales in December, which we would eat on the days leading up to Christmas. We’d eat tamales for breakfast. (They’re surprisingly great with scrambled eggs!) We’d eat tamales for lunch, and even more tamales for dinner. They were like little, edible gifts that we got to unwrap each time we sat down to eat. However, we usually ate so many tamales that, by Christmas day, no one in my family wanted to eat another tamale, smell another tamale or even hear someone say the word “tamale.” But the next holiday season, we’d happily do it all over again.

ate around the holidays. Now that I have a family of my own, I can’t let a holiday season go by without buying a dozen tamales. (Of course, I’m usually the one eating that dozen tamales all by myself, as my husband and kids have their own favorite holiday foods, but that’s a different story.) Like all parents, I love watching my children open gifts on Christmas day. But gifts are just things, and those things eventually break, or get lost, or get tossed aside and forgotten. But it’s the holiday traditions and experiences — whatever your version of tamales is! — that stick with us long after the last present has been opened. Have a great holiday season celebrating your own family traditions!

You can buy great tamales any time of the year. But there was something special about the tamales that my family and I

10 Ways to Make Magical Memories This Holiday Season 8. Have a holiday movie night.

The holiday season is full of magical moments to celebrate with your family. Some of the most priceless memories are created through annual traditions that stay in your heart throughout the years. Here are 10 ideas you could start this holiday season.

Pop some popcorn, warm up some hot chocolate, throw on your PJs and snuggle up for an evening of your favorite holiday movies and TV specials.

9. Support a local food pantry. Here’s another chance to teach your little one how to give back to those who may not have as much as your family does.

1. Make an ornament. Spark your family’s creativity by using materials at home to create a holiday ornament every year. Or visit a local art store and choose a ceramic ornament to paint.

6. Decorate your own ugly sweaters for National Ugly Sweater Day.

2. Take a family photo in the same spot. Look through the pictures with your family every year and celebrate how much you’ve changed and grown. Great spots at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis to preserve memories and measure growth include Chihuly’s Fireworks of Glass, the largest water clock in North America, the carousel, the Ruben Wells locomotive, one of several dinosaurs or next to the femur of a Sauropod that has a built-in yard stick, and the Snow Globe.

3. Interview family members. Ask your family members what their favorite holiday moments were for that year. Record them to relive in future years and to hear how the kids’ voices have changed.

4. Sponsor a family. Partner with a local organization to provide gifts, food and other support to a family this holiday season, while teaching your little ones philanthropy in the process.

5. Explore neighborhood holiday displays. Fill a thermos with hot cocoa, pack some favorite snacks, load your favorite holiday playlist or sing your favorite carols, and hit the road to find the best holiday light displays.

10. Visit The Children’s Museum. Check our web calendar to determine which Santa you want to visit. Share your wish list with the Jolly Old Elf. Family Winter Staycation Ideas Plan a fun winter break getaway without going far from home.

Looking for family winter getaway ideas? You don’t need to leave Indianapolis (or travel too far from it) to find lots of family fun. Although hopping on a plane and setting off to a far-away destination for the holidays is exciting, it’s often less expensive and more relaxing to stay close to home. A winter staycation might be the perfect idea to spend quality time with your family and explore your hometown.

If you’re looking for a place where you can stay, play and dine all in one spot, you need to check out Bottleworks Hotel, located in the Bottleworks District on Mass Ave. What used to be a Coca-Cola bottling plant is now a walkable hub to grab gourmet grub at The Garage food hall, play duckpin bowling at Pins Mechanical, or catch the latest flick at Living Room Theatres.

Spend the Night in a Hotel

the Lilly Theatre, located inside The Children’s Museum and free with paid admission.

Just because you’re spending the holidays at home doesn’t mean you need to spend them at home! There are lots of really cool hotels around Indianapolis that are perfect for a quick overnight stay.

Stay in a real train at The Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station, which has unique Pullman Train Car rooms. These hotel rooms let you experience a night in one of the original train cars that used to steam in and out of Union Station in the 1920s.

Explore a Museum

For a hotel experience that really caters to the littlest guests, check out the Omni Severin Hotel, also located in downtown Indy. Upon check in, kids receive a backpack filled with fun items, such as an activity book with stickers, crayons,

Indianapolis is the home to some of the best museums in the Midwest, and winter break is the perfect time to experience them. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis kicks off the holidays with Jolly Days, where you can play among a winter wonderland scene. Then, catch a showing of The Christmas Quest at

14

INDYSCHILD.COM I December 2021

Get Outside

2-in-1 card games, binoculars and a small tabletop game. Children also receive milk and cookies delivered to their room on the first night, and a full kids menu is available in the restaurant downstairs.

If you’re in the mood for a drive, check out the Muncie Children’s Museum, which is a short 70-minute trip from central Indy. Head west to visit the Terre Haute Children’s Museum, which is three f loors and 26,000 square feet of science and technology fun for kids. South of Indy is where you will find kidscommons in Columbus, Indiana, a fun play space for kids that features a giant toilet bowl that you can climb into.

Bundle up and take a walk around the Canal downtown, and you’ll rediscover just how cool the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument is. From the monument’s Observatory, you can experience panoramic views of the city skyline; it’s free to experience and can be reached via elevator or a kid-friendly, 330-step climb. While you’re in the area, walk around White River State Park to check out the dozens of public art sculptures located throughout the park. And speaking of art, you should definitely visit Newfield’s Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park, which is free to explore. It’s the place to see the famous Funky Bones sculpture, and a great spot to take a family selfie.

This winter break, make plans to rest, relax and rediscover Indy with a staycation. You’ll be surprised by how many fun experiences there are hiding in plain sight that are not too far from home!

HIDDEN GEMS

WORDS BY STEFFY MCCOURT

Arctic Zone Iceplex One of my family’s favorite winter activities is ice skating. Ever since my boys were little, we have been regulars at The Arctic Zone Iceplex in Westfield. Our favorite time to go? Cheap Skate Wednesdays! Almost every Wednesday from 3:15 to 5:00, for only $6, you get admission, skate rental and a hot dog and a drink! That’s some great exercise and a super easy meal tied into one awesome and amazingly affordable outing. For beginners, The Arctic Zone offers “skate helpers.” The “skate helper” means that your child will have the support to skate independently no matter their age or level. I do suggest that for little ones, parents still appropriately pad up their child, including putting a helmet on their precious head. If your child becomes a fan of skating, you need to check out Hamilton County’s ice-skating classes. Classes are offered at The Arctic Zone, Carmel Ice Skadium and Fishers Fuel Tank. All rinks offer beginning figure skating classes and beginning hockey classes that include free use of

16

INDYSCHILD.COM I December 2021

equipment, if needed, in the first few lessons. For older kids, try one of the three rinks’ Cosmic Skates. During Cosmic Skate, the lights are lowered and a multi-colored light show fills the rink. The combination of lights, music and skating is a really fun and magical experience especially during the holidays. If you have been skating around the idea of taking your kids to the rink, Cheap Skate Wednesday is the perfect opportunity to give it a go.

Bucket List Our roundup of fun and festive things to do in Indy this season. The holidays are here, and there is no shortage of family activities to enjoy in Indy. If you’re looking to add some Christmas fun to your month, here are some ideas to add to your family’s winter bucket list! WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE

Visit with Santa Santa is a busy guy — he has been spotted all over Indy! You’ll find Santa all season long at the Indiana State Museum’s Conservatory Crossing (with special times and dates for sensory-friendly visits) and Jolly Days Winter Wonderland at The Children’s Museum, among other places. Enjoy cookies and milk (Santa’s favorite treat!) at a free event at Clay Terrace in Carmel on Dec. 11, or share supper with Santa at the Greenwood Community Center on the same day.

Delight in Christmas Lights

Enjoy a Nutcracker Performance

See thousands of holiday lights twinkling and sparkling at night… all without leaving the warmth of your car. You’ll find drive-thru light shows all over Indy, including Magic of Lights at Ruoff Music Center, Christmas Nights of Lights at Indiana State Fair- grounds, and McAllister Machinery of Lights at Marion County Fairgrounds.

The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition, and fortunately, there are many performances happening in Indy. Watch the renowned Indiana Ballet Conservatory remake this iconic classic on Dec. 10-12, and student-produced Butler Ballet at Clowes Memorial Hall on Dec. 2-5. In Hamilton County, see Ballet Theatre of Carmel perform on Dec. 18-19. For the young kids, the Nutcracker Sweets at the Toby Theatre at Newfields is a short-but-sweet 1 hour long.

Cut Your Own Christmas Tree There’s something magical about picking the perfect Christmas tree with your family and cutting it down

yourself! Indy has a few U-cut options, all located outside of the circle. On the south side, you’ll find Jay’s Tree Farm in Mooresville; on the west, Evan Whispering Pines in Danville. Up north, visit Dull’s Tree Farm in Thornton; and on the east side, Clearview Family Christmas Tree Farm is located in Arlington.

Go Ice Skating Bundle up and grab your skates! The Ice at Carter Green in Carmel is a great place to go ice skating and is open through February. (Bonus: The ice rink is located in the middle of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt!) Located in Washington Township Park, Avon Ice Rink offers both ice skating and ice bumper cars.

Watch a Merry Movie

See the Holiday Trains Visiting Jingle Rails at the Eiteljorg Museum — and seeing the miniature trains chugging through those miniature scenes — is a true Indy tradition. Want to experience a real train? Then hop on the Reindeer Ride at the Nickel Plate Express in Noblesville to sing carols, enjoy a cookie and cocoa, and meet Santa during hour-long train rides through Hamilton County.

Holiday movies should be on every family’s bucket list! On Dec. 18, catch a showing of The Muppet Christmas Carol at The Athenaeum’s Cereal Cinema, and enjoy a free bowl of ceral while you’re there, too. Or bundle up and take a seat in front of Midtown Carmel Plaza’s big screen to watch a free showing of Santa Buddies on Dec. 11.

The Benefits of Swimming YEAR ROUND WINTER IS A GREAT TIME OF YEAR FOR KIDS TO STAY ACTIVE AND LEARN THIS LIFE-SAVING SKILL. WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

It’s common to think that swimming is only a summertime activity. Not so! The truth is, water emergencies can happen at any time of the year. Learning to swim is an important skill that leaves children feeling accomplished and has parents breathing sighs of relief. A great way to develop this skill is through swim lessons. And the good news is: You don’t have to wait for summer to roll back around to get your child started. “Water is not seasonal, therefore water safety should not be seasonal!” says Lindsay Thayer, owner of Aqua-Tots Swim School in Indianapolis. “It’s important to prioritize swim lessons year round so there is not a regression in skills over the winter, and to keep water safety at the top of your mind. With the combination of formal swimming instruction, adult supervision and conversations on water safety, drownings are 100% preventable.”

Thayer says that parents and guardians should be speaking with their children about how to be safe around, and in, water on a regular basis. “By discussing safe boundaries, we can equip our children with the knowledge they need to know the dangers of water,” Thayer says. “Children also experience mental and health benefits such as lower stress levels, higher confidence, and happiness.”

26

INDYSCHILD.COM I December 2021

Andrew Joseph, area manager for Goldfish Swim School in Carmel, agrees that children can retain skills, like swimming, much better if they are consistently practicing them. In addition to retaining the skills, swimming is also a great form of exercise during the dreary months.

“Exercise is a mood enhancer, and doing it at Goldfish with our tropical decor can definitely help with those winter blues,” Joseph says. “The social aspect of taking lessons in our current environment can be very helpful to kids, and the developmental aspect is always underrated. Swimming has been shown to hasten developmental abilities relating to social, spatial, cognitive and overall brain development.”

So, when should parents consider signing their children up for lessons? There is no better time to start than the present. The earlier children are introduced to the water, the greater the chance the child will feel comfortable.

According to the National Institutes of Health, participating in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% in children between the ages of 1 to 4 years old. Not only will year-round swim lessons teach your child the skills they need to keep them safe around the water, but they will also provide fun exercise in the cold-weather months as they splash and kick the winter blues away.

TEENS & TWEENS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Teens and Zzzzzs home at different times in the evening. They may not be able to get to bed at the same time every night, but try to have a routine that helps them to relax and get ready to sleep. Sometimes a hot bath or a shower helps. Consider using soothing scents like lavender in the bath or on their pillow. You also want to be sure to keep the room cool, dark and quiet.

Do you remember the first time your child slept through the night? Who knew eight hours of sleep could feel like such a luxury? When our children are little, sleepless nights are inevitable. Then the teenage years hit and we are dealing with a whole new set of sleep issues. Now, instead of wondering how early they will wake up, and if we are going to be getting any sleep at all, we start to wonder if we should wake them up before noon. Most teenagers love to sleep, but how much sleep do they really need? Why do they sleep so much? And how can we encourage good sleep hygiene for our teens? The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has recommended teenagers aged 13-18 years should sleep eight to 10 hours per 24 hours. With school, extracurricular activities, work, homework, a social life and early school arrival times, it isn’t always easy for teens to get the recommended amount of sleep per night. In addition, teens experience a natural shift in circadian rhythm that makes it more difficult for them to fall asleep before 11 pm. This means they are natural night owls. All of these things combined can make hitting the 8-10 hour mark pretty challenging.

30

INDYSCHILD.COM I December 2021

Encourage naps. If your teen’s schedule allows it, encourage them to take a 20-30 minute power nap. A little nap goes a long way, even for the big kids. So what do you do when you know your teen needs sleep, but it just doesn’t seem to fit their schedule? You can start by encouraging healthy sleep habits.

Limit screen time before bed. The light from screens is thought to be disruptive to sleep, and may make it difficult for your teen to wind down.

Remove devices from the room. It’s a good idea to remove the device from the room at night. Removing the device will limit the temptation

to check notifications, which can be disruptive to sleep. Also, checking social media before bed has the potential to lead to some unwanted negative emotions that may make it harder to fall asleep.

Avoid caffeine and energy drinks. Some caffeine early in the day is fine, but consider limiting any caffeinated beverages in the afternoon, and especially the evening.

Create a consistent bedtime routine. Due to work schedules and other activities, your teen may be arriving

Evaluate the schedule. If your teen is really struggling to consistently get the sleep he or she needs, consider reevaluating their schedule. Sit down with them and talk about what can possibly go. Can they work day shifts on the weekend? Is there an activity they can give up for a while? Also, teens are incredibly social and sometimes need to be reminded they can’t do things with their friends all of the time. Boundaries are good for our big kids, too.

SPECIAL NEEDS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Sensory-friendly Ways to Celebrate the Holidays It’s been called the most wonderful time of the year and the happiest season of all, and we have to agree! But not only are the holidays wonderful, they also can be a bit overwhelming, especially for children with autism and sensory processing disorder. With so much to do and so little time, here are some sensory-friendly holiday experiences in the Indianapolis area you won’t want to miss!

See the lights around Monument Circle and deliver a letter to Santa’s mailbox. This low-key activity is sure to get your family in the Christmas spirit. Your child is on the nice list, so bring a letter for Santa and head to Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis. There, your family can see the beautiful twinkling lights, drop off letters in Santa’s special mailbox, and even grab a hot chocolate or tasty treat from the South Bend Chocolate Company.

Enjoy a sensory-friendly visit with Santa at Conner Prairie. On December 11 from 2:30-4:30 p.m., Conner Prairie will host a sensory-friendly opportunity for children to meet Santa at their own pace and comfort level. They will provide fidget toys as well as cookies to decorate and enjoy. Those with dietary restrictions are welcome to bring their own snacks.

During this time, families can visit Santa, engage in two different interactive story times (9:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m.), and experience the ISM’s new toddler area and holiday fun in Santa’s Front Yard. Magical Mornings are recommended for kids ages 6 and younger, and feature fewer light shows, limited sounds and small crowd sizes to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for children with autism spectrum disorder.

Eat breakfast with Santa. Johnson County’s Autism Community Connection is hosting a breakfast event for children with autism and their families on December 4 from 9-11 a.m. in Greenwood. Breakfast with Santa will include pancakes, pastries, fruits and more to enjoy. Plus, kids can play “reindeer” games, do holiday crafts, enjoy carriage rides, and meet with Santa Claus. For more info, visit autismcc-in.org.

Drive around and marvel at Christmas lights. This is another low-key activity that can be done any night during the season. Put on your favorite pair of comfy pajamas, pop some fresh popcorn (and maybe some hot chocolate for the bigger kids who won’t spill), pile in the car, crank your favorite Christmas tunes, and head out for a night of Christmas light viewing around nearby neighborhoods.

Meeting Santa isn’t always number-one on a child’s list. In fact, for some, it can be downright terrifying. If you think your child may fall under this category, you may want to consider skipping the personal visit. But if your child is excited to meet the man in the big red suit, a little preparation may go a long way. Be sure to tell your child what to expect before arriving. Let them know you will be standing in a line and music may be playing. Bring something special and comforting for your child to hold on to and play with during the wait time. Explain how they will be asked to sit on Santa’s lap and that he will want to know what they want this year. Maybe even write it down before arriving to help your child remember, and be sure to let him or her know pictures will be taken.

WORDS BY MICHELLE MASTRO

Local Spotlight: Disability Legal Services of Indiana This nonprofit believes every Hoosier child with disabilities should have access to special education.

The nonprofit Disability Legal Services of Indiana (DLSI) assists low-income students with disabilities, helping them access appropriate educational services. “These services are to ensure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic self-sufficiency,” says Margaret Jones, executive director of the nonprofit. These four areas were regarded as essential to the education of students with disabilities in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA).

“With the help we offer through Disability Legal Services of Indiana, low-income parents of children with disabilities can work together with their child’s school to gain access to effective educational programs for their children,” Jones

“Oftentimes, however, we find that parents and guardians seeking help from us have few affordable options for asserting their educational rights, making our work important for helping Indiana families,” Jones says.

“Without the help of DLSI, these families would not be able to access legal services,” Jones says. DLSI provides free advocacy and legal assistance to families at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, while families that live between 150% and 300% pay a sliding scale low-cost hourly fee.

DLSI formed in 2008 to fill this need experienced by low-income Hoosier families, offering free and low-cost legal assistance and educational advocacy. “Parents come to us asking, ‘What services can I access and how do I access them?’” Jones says. “Many parents might not even know that their child can be evaluated for free by their local public school

says. “However, we also want to help the parents in the long term. So we provide additional training and resources to parents and professionals regarding the various aspects of the special education process.” According to the nonprofit, as of April 2021, there are more than 180,000 Indiana children between the ages of 3 to 22 receiving special education services. And many of these children live in poverty.

has told the parents that their child is ineligible.’ In this example, DLSI works as a mediator to ensure that a functional behavior assessment takes place.”

The organization helps families navigate the world of special education, which can be puzzling at times. “Sometimes, parents come in and say that their kid is being disciplined for behavioral issues, when in reality, the child may have autism and needs to be assessed for a formal diagnosis,” Jones says. “The parents come to us for help. And we then tell the school district, ‘Look, there’s a provision to do a functional behavior assessment, even though the individual school

DLSI helps families with a range of special education issues. For example, this work may involve IEPs (Individualized Education Plans), identifying a child’s eligibility for special education and related services, helping with educational placement or discipline matters, and much more.
