Presence Over Presents What do your children want more of this holiday season? They might tell you it’s more toys, or a new bike, or a Barbie Dreamhouse. More likely, though, the gift they want the most is… you. More time spent cuddling on the couch. More time to show you what they made at school or talk about their day. More time to shoot basketballs or kick soccer balls with you, go on walks around the neighborhood with you, or “help” you around the house.

back on their childhood and remember me as always present in some way. I hope they remember a mom who was eager to see the new thing they built in Minecraft, or play a game of Monopoly, or listen to them talk about who chased who on the playground.

Time spent with your family can’t be wrapped up with a pretty bow. But being present and mindful with your family is the ultimate gift you can give them (and yourself!) this holiday season.

Or they might just want to know that you’re physically there, in the room, ready to “mom” if needed. This is usually the case with my two boys as they get older. They are transitioning beyond the “cuddle on the couch” stage, so I’ve had to find other ways to be present with them. Sometimes this looks like taking them out for hikes and donuts. Sometimes it looks like finding a reason to silently be in the same room as they are. But either way, I’m hoping that both of my children will look

HIDDEN GEMS

WORDS BY REBECCA MATTESON

The Curious Kiln Milford’s newest expansion, The Curious Kiln, opened in November. It offers a full line of canvas and sign painting, clay slabs for hand building, claybased workshops, pottery wheel date nights and more. Owner Tabitha Harper shares about her shop and why the most heartwarming gifts are usually homemade. What inspired you to bring The Curious Kiln to Cincinnati? Ever since high school, I’ve taught art and led creative experiences for kids and adults, even while working 9-to-5 jobs. I grew up around ceramic studios with an aunt owning her own studio and my grandmother who worked at a different local pottery studio. Grandma would bring bisque pieces home for us to paint and every year for Christmas I could expect something over-thetop that she made.

The Curious Kiln looks like a blast for creative kids! What projects do you have to offer? Kids get to pick their own "blank canvas of bisque" to create whatever inspires them! Whether it’s an ornament for their teacher, or

s'mores trinket boxes with their Scout troop. Kids can paint figurines with friends, or celebrate a birthday in the private party room.

What is the process like? When you enter our space, you can pick a spot to sit, then head to the fully stocked shelves to pick whichever piece inspires you. Our last day to glaze for guaranteed pick up before Christmas is December 10. However, If you have something you want to gift that's ornamental (not food safe), we always have our "make and take option," which is painting with a variety of acrylic paints, and using really interesting and durable top coats that mimic the look of glaze without the need to fire in a kiln.

What about The Curious Kiln’s sister store, McHarper Manor? My husband, Tom, and I own the creative space next door called McHarper Manor. Here, we offer weekly art clubs for kids, drawing and painting classes for junior high and high school, summer and school break camps, "family create dates," sewing courses, royal icing cookie decorating workshops, hand lettering events, and a variety of mediums for all ages. 1011 Business 28, Milford mcharpermanor.com

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY PAM FREEMAN

Local Spotlight: Cincinnati Museum Center Cr(EAT)e Culinary Studio The CMC is cooking up something good that will get kids into the kitchen.

And think more about your food at home. Where does it come from? What recipes can you pass on? What tweaks can you make to be your own culinary mad scientist?

A kitchen is so much more than a place to prepare food. New to Cincinnati Museum Center is the Cr(EAT)e Culinary Studio, a versatile programming space featuring the Kroger Food Lab, with multiple cooking stations, including ovens and ranges.

Cr(EAT)e Culinary Studio Upcoming Events

Southwest Ohio Parent spoke to Cody Hefner, vice president of marketing & communications for the Cincinnati Museum Center, to learn more about this culinary space.

SCIENCE BY THE BITE: Homeschool Cooking Club for ages 7 to 14

What inspired the Cr(EAT)e Culinary Studio?

Will you be working with local chefs and industry experts?

The idea started as a food science lab, but evolved into a vision of a versatile space where food, science, history and community can come together. The museum is already a place where science, history and early childhood development converge, so we decided to put a food lens around that.

We’ve engaged a range of partners and are continuing to do so as we build out programs, demonstrations and other learning opportunities. For example, we’ve partnered with nonprofit LaSoupe Cincinnati on some research and program development, as well as the University of Cincinnati.

How can museum visitors use the studio? We’re developing programming for the space that will allow 20 to 30 people — kids and adults — to chop, whisk, bake and sauté their way through classic and experimental recipes, while also diving into the science and history behind them. Our first programs are available now, with more on the way in spring 2024.

26 OHPARENT.COM / DECEMBER 2023

We’re also planning week-long Museum Camps this summer. We tested them last year and had an amazing response. Kids 10, 11 and 12 years old made their own sushi, pasta and alfredo from scratch, and baked and decorated cakes. It was incredible. You’ll also see mini demonstrations pop up in museum spaces through a cart program, and we’re having a lot of fun incorporating the Cr(eat)e Culinary Studio into theme days and events.

How can people support the Cincinnati Museum Center and the studio? Come cook with us! We’re developing more and more programs and are excited to launch our spring schedule soon, as well as the opportunities for our Museum Camps this summer.

French Toast & Compote: December 7 Mac and Cheese: January 18 Muffin Mix-up: January 25 JUNIOR CHEFS: Parents & Children Cooking Together Cake and Ice Cream: January 13 Amazing Alfredo: January 20 Learn more about upcoming programs and register online at cincymuseum.org/createculinary-studio.

Distance from Dayton: 1 hour 15 minutes Chillicothe’s rich indigenous past permeates this Ohio city. For a unique local experience, visit the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, where you can discover the area's ancient indigenous history by visiting Earthen mounds and embankments that date back to 200 B.C. For a day focused on the little ones, visit the Mighty Children's Museum, where kids can engage in hands-on play and educational experiences. During the winter months, the museum is the spot to find outdoor ice skating, too. If you're a train fan, make a stop at the Chillicothe Railroad Museum, which is housed inside two retired cabooses. The Adena Mansion and Gardens Historic Site offers another chance to learn about Ohio history — this museum is the estate of Thomas Worthington, the sixth governor of Ohio and one of the state's first United States Senators.
