The 500 Festival Office is located on Virginia Avenue. The original building that sat on this site was the Abbett Building which was next to the original Indianapolis Bank of Commerce. Under the city streets, you can still find tunnels that at that time were used to transfer funds throughout the City’s “Financial District.”

Here is what people are saying about their experiences during the magical month of May:
protection of our freedoms they provide.
— Staff Sgt. Jacob Cash, Indiana Army National Guard
This year will be my fifth year participating in the Mini-Marathon. I love the crowd, I love the excitement in the air and I love that this race is what caused me to change my life for the better. I will continue to run the Mini every year as a ‘thank you’ for saving me from myself and the unhealthy path I was on.
— Katie Foster, Mini-Marathon participant (Katie has lost 125 pounds by eating a healthy diet and running. Thank you, Katie, for sharing your story and inspiring others.)
I volunteer because I enjoy the excitement surrounding the month of May. I have returned each year, and added additional areas in which to volunteer, because it has been so much fun — the activities themselves, seeing other returning volunteers and watching the participants having so much fun.
— Rise Cogswell, volunteer Our family has a long history of attending the parade. It’s generational. My parents took me as a child; I took my kids and now I’m attending with our grandchildren. It’s the most entertaining thing we do all year.

Whatever your talent, the 500 Festival wants to put it to good use. At the heart of the 500 Festival events, there are nearly 7,000 volunteers who are critical to making almost 50 events a success. With more than 100 areas of opportunity, the 500 Festival Volunteer Program, presented by Citizens Energy Group, provides the chance to see festival events up close. Volunteers continue to demonstrate the importance of community and teamwork to the 500 Festival’s success year after year. Nearly 4,000 volunteers help make the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and the Finish Line 500 Festival 5K possible — a number that includes more than 600 OneAmerica employees serving as volunteers. In addition, 1,500 volunteers support the IPL 500 Festival Parade. Volunteering for May events is a great way to give back to the community and be part of an Indiana legacy. Those who volunteer will receive a 500 Festival T-shirt, a volunteer program pin, complimentary snacks, refreshments, parking — and guaranteed fun.

Committed to our Community
Citizens’ “Sharing the Dream” event is just one way our company and employee volunteers contribute to the quality of life in our community. In January 2012, we conducted our fourth annual Sharing the Dream project. During this event, Citizens and partnering contractors contributed more than $100,000 in materials and supplies, in-kind work, and hundreds of employee hours to refurbish Eagle Creek Park’s Hide-A-Way retreat.
Through donations of time and money, Citizens Energy Group employees are working each year to make Indianapolis a better place to live. This year, Citizens is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the 500 Festival Volunteer Program. We are privileged to help advocate and celebrate the spirit, heritage and legacy of the Indianapolis 500. CitizensEnergyGroup.com

Towns get in the racing spirit Back Home Again in Indiana The IMS Community Decoration Program, Back Home Again in Indiana, encourages cities and towns in Indiana to decorate their neighborhoods with the spirit of the Indianapolis 500®. Whether it’s black-checkered flags or Snake Pit themes, the contest encourages Hoosiers to celebrate the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. A grand prize of $20,000 is awarded to the winning city or town to be used toward a project to improve the community. The second- and thirdplace communities are given $2,500. In 2011, the winner of the Back Home Again in Indiana contest was Brownstown, Ind. Brownstown went above and beyond the neighborhood decoration requirements. The
entry celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway by asking members of the community to contribute items in quantities of one hundred. For instance, youth organizations donated 100 bags of clothes to Goodwill, churches donated 100 cans of food to a local pantry and a high school gym class walked 100 miles in one month. One particular 5th grade classroom at Brownstown Elementary School hosted its own race, the Mini Indy 500, which re-enacted every detail of the race, including the
Borg-Warner Trophy, drinking milk and singing “Back Home Again in Indiana.” The grand prize money will be used to develop a multi-use trail that connects the Jackson Co. History Center to the Jackson Co. Fairgrounds, which is the home of the Brownstown Speedway. This will provide a safe pedestrian and bicycle path to and from the fairgrounds, as well as a multi-use trail for recreational use by the community.
Thank you to long-time sponsors and friends Whether powering up the computers behind the sophisticated scoring tower at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, or lighting up a garage for a race mechanic pulling an all-nighter, Indianapolis Power & Light Company is a big part of the month of May. IPL adds a burst of excitement as the title sponsor for one of the best-known events of May in Indianapolis: the IPL 500 Festival Parade. In addition to being the title sponsor for the past eight years, IPL is the only organization that has had a float in the parade every year since it started in 1957. In addition to supporting the 500 Festival, IPL is dedicated to making a difference in the Indianapolis community through partnerships with Trees for Tomorrow, Project Greenspace and various energy conservation and emission-reduction programs.

OneAmerica has been the title sponsor of the 500 Festival MiniMarathon for nine consecutive years; however, its generosity extends far beyond that. More than 600 OneAmerica employees volunteer for the Mini-Marathon and do everything from managing packet pick-up to helping set up the Post Race Party to passing out water at the finish line. In addition, since 1996, OneAmerica employees have manned the walking flag in the IPL 500 Festival Parade. The “Spirit of America” is a 30-foot by 70-foot version of Old Glory that is carried by 36 OneAmerica employees. The flag celebrates the lives of Hoosier heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation. OneAmerica also is active in helping other community organizations including the Indiana Repertory Theatre, Center for Leadership Development, The Mind Trust and United Way — which honored the company with the Spirit United award in 2011 for its commitment to United Way’s Ready to Learn, Ready to Earn program.
