Advanced technology, sculpted styling, powerful engines, and some familiar names getting complete revamps are but a start. With the economy accelerating, it’s a great time to visit. “Consumer confidence is good and dealers see a regular flow of people,” said Marty Murphy, Auto Show General Manager. “The economy is good, interest rates are low, and people are still motivated to buy. There’s less pent-up demand than there was last year, but we expect sales to be up.” Hosted by the Greater Metropolitan

2015 AUTO SHOW

Chevrolet Equinox Overall: With so much attention being paid to Chevrolet’s full size SUVs, the strong-selling Equinox remains unchanged for 2015.

Although it has been a couple years since Chevrolet added a larger optional V6 engine and additional content, the company figured that was more than enough to keep its potential Equinox customers happy. Why? Even after five years, it’s obviously “just right” for plenty of folks. Clever touches abound in the design, like the integrated rocker panels in the doors that reduce entry step-up height. (They also help keep pant legs from brushing up against the vehicle’s lower body area.) The interior is likely the Equinox’s best asset. It’s simply gorgeous and includes dual gloveboxes, easy-to-read twin gauges set in large pods and plenty of handy storage bins. There’s also a versatile split folding rear seat that can be adjusted fore and aft over an eight-inch range to optimize legroom or cargo capacity. A 182-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder reigns as a base engine with its 21/32 mpg city/highway fuel-economy rating. The optional 3.6-liter V6 with 301 horsepower outclasses every other compact tall wagon in the segment. It earns a 17/25 mpg rating, which is pretty solid given the power level. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with either engine. A wide assortment of standard equipment (air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry and power windows/locks/ mirrors, etc.) comes in base versions, as does a seven-inch touch-screen to work the standard audio system. Moving up into the top-line models adds climate control, heated leather seats, 18- or 19-inch wheels — the larger of which are chromed on LTZ models — extra trim and premium audio. The only new feature for 2015 is an OnStar-based in-car Wi-Fi hot-spot that’s standard with a three-month trial. After that, you’re paying a predetermined monthly fee depending on your data usage. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Kia Soul Overall: It’s not just a youth-market car as the Soul draws in buyers from every age group. For 2015 the Soul also goes electric.

Few cars are ever considered groundbreaking, but that pretty much sums up the Soul. It’s the kind of vehicle that other automakers would give anything to have in their stable. Funky styling, a frugal price tag and fuel-saving ways have made it a winner. Even those lovable rodents in the Soul’s TV spots are half way to attaining icon status. For 2014, Kia upgraded and slightly enlarged the cabin for more front head and shoulder room and added a bit more rear legroom. In addition the dashboard was revised to accommodate an available eight-inch touch screen. The platform was made 29 percent stiffer and accommodates a suspension that was reengineered for improved ride and handling. Outside, design details inspired by the Soul-based Trax’ster concept provided the basis for a front and rear facelift that makes the Soul much more appealing. The rear liftgate was made 2.4 inches wider and is now flanked by one of the coolest set of taillights ever installed on any vehicle. The entry-level Base Soul comes with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder that produces 130 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 2.0-liter fourcylinder in the Plus and Exclaim models delivers 164 horses and 151 pound-feet of torque. The 1.6 uses a six-speed manual transmission or optional sixspeed automatic, while the 2.0 is only available with the automatic. Base Souls feature air conditioning plus all the usual power amenities. As well as the larger engine the mid-range Plus adds a fancier interior including floor console stowage and a backup camera, while the Exclaim gets 18-inch wheels (17’s are standard), projector-style headlights, multiadjustable driver’s seat and a cooled glove box.

Optional is a panorama-style sunroof and leather seats (heated and ventilated in front), along with a navigation system and premium Infinity-brand sound

2015 AUTO SHOW

Nissan Altima Overall: Nissan continues the steady improvement of its excellent Altima, including making the V6 more efficient.

Once upon a time, automakers used to wait two or three models years before introducing changes to their products but the increasingly popular philosophy of continual improvement is working well for Nissan. Its popular mid-size Altima has a graceful shape that’s sure to find favor with potential owners, while the wellappointed interior has NASA-inspired “zero-gravity” front seats for greater comfort. Cabin noise is reduced thanks to sound-absorbing materials around the instrument panel, floor and roof areas and the upgraded engine mounts that improve isolation. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder delivers 182 horsepower while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) has fewer moving parts, significantly reduced friction and electronic-control improvements so that it more closely mimics a traditional multi-speed automatic (with less noise). Nissan claims fuel performance of 27 mpg city and 38 highway, compared with 23/32 for the previous Altima. While the output of the optional 3.5-liter V6 still makes 270 horsepower output

remains unchanged, it now gains one mpg on the highway cycle. That means 22 mpg in the city and 31 highway, which is pretty decent. Altima boasts “Active Understeer Control” that applies light braking pressure to the inside wheel in a corner to counteract a vehicle’s natural tendency to continue in a straight line.

Specs Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.5-liter DOHC I4 (182) Optional engine (hp): 3.5-liter DOHC V6 (270) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.) MPG (city/hwy): 27/38 (2.5, CVT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (lb.): 3,180

Also assisting the driver is Nissan’s Easy Fill Tire Alert that was initially installed in the Quest minivan. Instead of trying to decipher your tire pressure gauge (especially daunting at night), the horn will sound when the correct amount of inflation has been reached. Finally, the Altima’s headlights automatically turn on after the wipers have completed four cycles, which helps other drivers see you during downpour conditions. There are actually seven Altima trims, but for 2015 several add-on packages have been introduced, renamed or had their contents changed, with the most dramatic being the addition of navigation, Bluetooth integration, blind-spot warning, moving-object detection and lane-departure warning as standard equipment in most V6 models. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Chevrolet Silverado HD Overall: Chevy follows up on the new-for 2014 Silverado by launching a similar-looking, but beefier, 2015 Heavy Duty edition.

Chevrolet’s 2500- and 3500-series heavyduty trucks are intended to be hard-working commercial rigs.

Specs Type: Heavy-duty threequarter /one-ton pickup Base engine (hp): 6.0-liter OHV V8 (360, 301 CNG) Optional engine (hp): 6.6-liter OHV V8, turbo-diesel (397) Layout: Front-engine, rear- / four-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic

Silverado 1500-series: Handy hauler

Type: Full-size pickup Base engine (hp): 4.3-liter OHV V6 (285) Optional engines (hp): 5.3-liter OHV V8 (355); 6.2-liter OHV V8 (420) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic; eight-speed automatic (6.2) MPG (city/hwy): 18/24 (4.3) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; antilock brakes; traction control; stability control. Weight (lb.): 4,940

Safety: Front airbags; anti-lock brakes Weight (lb.): 5,630

That’s why the stuff they haul is called “payload” since someone is most likely writing the HD owner/ operator a check for transporting some very heavy and/or valuable gear. The usual cab styles return, but the extended-cab is replaced by a new double-cab with rear doors that are hinged at the front. As well, both the 66-inch and 96-inch cargo boxes have been strengthened and the rear bumper has a built-in recessed steps at each corner for easier access. All HD powertrains return unaltered for 2015. The base 6.0-liter gasoline V8 puts out 360 horsepower and 380 poundfeet of torque. Chevrolet also offers a bi-fuel version of the 6.0 that can be switched from gasoline to natural gas, although power drops to 301 horses and 333 pound-feet of torque. For serious grunt, there’s the optional 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 rated at 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque. Both engines use six-speed automatic transmissions: a GM-developed Hydramatic comes with the 6.0; and the turbo-diesel employs an Allison-built unit. Chevy includes its “smart exhaust brake system” to the turbo-diesel that, when coasting, holds compressed exhaust gasses inside the engine’s cylinders, creating resistance, which in turn slows down the truck without touching the brakes. The result is less wear and tear on the brake hardware and greater control for the driver, especially when hauling or towing heavy loads downhill. Included is a stability program that reduces the trailer’s tendency to wobble about, while hill-start assist prevents the HD from rolling backward when on an incline. For the 2015 model year, the HD’s maximum hauling capacity has increased to 7,374 pounds from 7,222 and conventional towing capacity has similarly increased to 19,600 pounds from 18,000. Fifth-wheel-capacity is up to 23,200 from 22,500 pounds. Since the uses for an HD pickup vary greatly, the standard and optional HD equipment on the WT (Work Truck), LT and LTZ trim levels is tremendous. And with the luxurious new “High Country” trim level (beating out the LTZ), you can, quite literally, outfit the HD from bare-bones basic to over-the-edge luxury. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Ford Escape Overall: Ford obviously hit a home run with its small and tall Escape, given its ubiquity on the roads.

Ford has always done well with the compact Escape, but its usability was always its best aspect. The second-generation’s radically different sheetmetal is just one reason why it’s more popular than ever. Its slightly larger dimensions mean greater rear-seat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The interior is inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but it makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features wellbolstered front seats that are a major advancement over that of earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder (also from Ford’s “EcoBoost” engine lineup) is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. A hybrid version won’t be available this time around since Ford’s C-Max hybrid wagon uses that drive system. Sadly for a few “Escapees,” the six-speed manual gearbox has shifted away from the Escape lineup, leaving only a six-speed automatic (with a detent for manual gear selection) as the sole transmission. An “Intelligent” allwheel-drive system can be ordered with the turbocharged models. It continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 percent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip. The Escape is the first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. The new-tech gear extends to the option sheet, which is understandably lengthy considering the Escape’s four distinct trims. But the most unique option is the power liftgate that automatically opens and closes when you shake your foot hokey pokey-style beneath the bumper (great when your hands are full of kids and/or groceries). For 2015, Escape can be ordered with an optional chrome appearance package that includes 19-inch wheels, bright, spangly trim and leather seats. !

Specs Type: Four-door compact tall wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-liter DOHC I4 (168) Optional engines (hp): 1.6-liter DOHC I4, turbocharged (173); 2.0-liter DOHC I4, turbocharged (237) Layout: Front-engine, front- / four-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic MPG (city/hwy): 23/31 (2.5, FWD) Safety: Front airbags; sideimpact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (lb.): 3,500

2015 AUTO SHOW

Hyundai Sonata Overall: Hyundai’s bread-and-butter family sedan doffs its trendy duds and sharp creases for more formal attire.

When the previous Hyundai Sonata arrived for the 2011 model year, its creators devised a coupe-like shape along with a bold grille and headlight treatment.

Specs Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.4-liter DOHC I4 (185) Optional engines (hp): 2.0-liter DOHC I4, turbocharged (245); 1.6-liter DOHC I4 (177) Layout: Front engine, frontwheel-drive

Transmissions: Six-speed automatic; seven-speed automated manual (std. on 1.6) MPG (city/hwy): 25/37 (2.4)

Transmission: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.)

Safety: Front airbags; sideimpact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s knee airbag; anti-lock brakes; stability control

MPG (city/hwy): 27/38 (MT)

Weight (lb.): 3,250

Type: Four-door sedan/hatchback Base engine (hp): 1.6-liter DOHC I4 (138) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive

Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (lb.): 2,480

This time around, the Sonata is toned down in looks and shares a physical affiliation with the bigger 2015 Genesis sedan. The interior receives a new dashboard and control panel including an integrated display screen and numerous, but logically positioned, pushbuttons with fewer twisty knobs. What has also been reduced is the output generated by the Sonata’s two returning engines. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder now makes 185 horsepower, down from the 2014 version’s 200 horsepower. Similarly, the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is rated at 245 horsepower (previously 274 horses). In each case, a six-speed automatic transmission directs power to the front wheels. Slotted between those two choices, and exclusive to the new Sonata Eco model, is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that produces 177 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. That engine connects to a sevenspeed automated manual transmission that promises rapid-fire electronically activated upshifts. Note that the gas-electric Sonata Hybrid will be reissued sometime in calendar year 2015 as a 2016 model. The Sport gets its own grille and front bumper and added rocker-panel and chrome side moldings, but to move up to 18-inch wheels (16-inchers are standard on base cars and 17s are standard on Sport and Limited) you’ll need to order the Sport 2.0T. Both it and the Limited steal the content show with luxury-class amenities such as dual-zone climate control and leather seat coverings. A panorama sunroof is optional, as are a number of popular electronic safety intervention aids that can help keep passengers safe and the Sonata from receiving unwarranted body blows. !

Mazda3 Overall: Mazda’s compact sedan and hatch could be mistaken for expensive European rivals; still sets the pace with impressive powertrains and a comfy cabins.

It’s rare to find beautiful mainstream vehicles in this highly regulated, ultra-competitive market, but Mazda’s redesigned sedan and hatchback models get the vote.

They emulate the mid-size Mazda6 sedan and the CX-5 wagon, which means they no longer wear Cheshire-cat grins affixed to their snouts. Instead, both adopted Mazda’s latest Kodo (Japanese for “Soul of Motion”) design approach that includes an attractive, but less gimmicky grille. The rest of the bodywork is equally tasty from any vantage point. Like its Mazda6 and CX-5 brand mates, the Mazda3 benefits greatly from the SkyActiv suite of structural and powertrain enhancements. That means a stiffer platform and finely tuned suspension and steering components geared to sports-car-like precision. But the real show-stoppers are the base and optional powerplants. There’s a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque; the optional 2.5-liter four-cylinder peaks with 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. Both are available with six-speed manual transmissions, while six-speed automatics are optional. Interestingly, both engines are closely matched in fuel consumption, with the nod going to the 2.0’s official 30-mpg city/41-mpg highway rating with the auto box. The 2.5 rings up 28/39, but both numbers improve by one mpg with the optional “i-Eloop” capacitor that stores electricity generated under braking. The system provides power for the 3’s various electrical components for extended periods while disengaging the alternator, which reduces drag on the engine. Mazda3 prices start at $17,750 for the base i SV sedan that includes the usual air conditioning and power-operated accessories plus push-button start. The base s Touring hatchback is priced at $25,400 but, along with the lustier 2.5-liter engine, there’s considerably more content. Mazda will also sell you a top-line S Grand Touring edition with enough standard and available up-level and safety gear to rival many so-called luxury vehicles. Regardless of your choice, the new Mazda3 is an impressive piece of work that will be appreciated by those who really enjoy driving something sporty, but without the space limitations that traditional sports cars impose. !

Subaru Outback Overall: Beneath the Outback’s suburban sheetmetal there’s a rock-climbing-capable off-roader.

During its 20-year history, Subaru’s plucky wagon has remained true to its roots, while undergoing continuous improvement. For the 2015 model year, the Legacysedan-based Outback receives a number of critical updates. Visually, the car appears similar to the outgoing version, although a revised grille, lightweight aluminum hood, reshaped headlights and door-mounted mirrors are evident. The upgrades continue inside, with a quieter cabin with a reshaped dashboard, larger front seats and a more cavernous floor console. The Outback’s suspension has been retuned and Subaru has added Active Torque Vectoring that applies slight brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces a bit more peak horsepower (175 versus 173) and maintains the same torque rating of 174 pound-feet. The optional 3.6-liter six-cylinder continues to make 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet torque. Both engines are connected to continuously variable transmissions (four-cylinder Outbacks are no longer available with a fivespeed manual). The CVT helps the 2.5-liter model achieve 25 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway, up from the previous 24/30 rating. The standard all-wheel-drive system has also been tuned for improved slipperyroad performance. A new driver-controlled X-Mode adjusts the transmission and engine output plus the AWD system to reduce wheelspin. X-Mode also adds Hill Descent Control (keeps vehicle speed to a crawl), Incline Start Assist (briefly holds the vehicle when starting on hills) and a Hill Holder System that prevents the Outback from rolling backward when stopped, until the accelerator is pressed. When combined with the Outback’s 8.7-inch ground clearance, X-Mode makes the Outback more fit for rugged off-road duty. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Toyota Camry Overall: Toyota spices up its top-selling mid-size sedan and sets it on a new path.

For years the Toyota Camry has been one of the principal pack leaders in the mid-size sedan segment. However, being on top doesn’t automatically guarantee success with the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion and several other mid-size marques chasing your tailpipe. To appeal to new and existing buyers alike, Toyota has sharpened the Camry’s claws in one of the brand’s more dramatic adjustments. The most obvious change is the dramatically different front end where a new spindlestyle grille/air intake has been installed. There are new new gauges, a reshaped control panel and recovered seats with better-quality fabrics. One neat feature is an available wireless charging system located in a bin ahead of the shifter that will energize your smart phone or similar electronic device without having to plug it in. Virtually unchanged are the Camry’s three power teams that are proven stalwarts and remain competitive against the rest of the field. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder is the primary workhorse for the majority of Camrys and provides 178 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. The carryover Camry Hybrid drivetrain consists of a 156-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a 105-kilowatt (141 horsepower) electric motor for a net system output of 200 horsepower and 199 pound-feet. The Hybrid earns a rating of 39 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway; numbers that are attainable only if you keep a light touch on the gas pedal. Both gasoline engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions, while the Hybrid employs a continuously variable unit (CVT). Camry drivers are treated to a retuned suspension (sporttuned for the SE version). The electric-power-steering rack has also been tweaked for greater straight-line stability and a more direct feel while turning. The base Camry LE arrives with most of the expected content, but stepping up to the XSE and XLE will really make a difference with added sport and luxury content. They include a power moonroof, acoustic noise-reducing windshield, push-button start and a premium audio package that’s combined with a navigation system. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Chevrolet Cruze Overall: While the next generation Cruze has been delayed slightly, Chevrolet makes the 2015 model look more like its larger siblings.

While Chevrolet has been winning hearts with the incredibly stylish Impala, its older products have been in need of a little more pizzazz. So the Cruze gets a small facelift for 2015 with a more prominent set of intakes and a slightly revised grille. And, like virtually every other vehicle on the market, LED running lights are standard on the higher trim levels. The 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine offers more horsepower and torque — 151 and 264, respectively — than either of the gasoline engines, and torque can reach 280 pound-feet for brief bursts of flat-out acceleration. While its zero-to-60-mph time in the mid-eight-second range will be enjoyed by some, everyone will appreciate the 700-plus-mile cruising range, thanks to a headline 46-mpg highway fueleconomy figure. The diesel only comes one way: with equipment equivalent to a 2LT trim in regular Cruzes. That means niceties like leather seats, heated front seats, a nicer instrument cluster with chrome trim, 17-inch wheels, rear spoiler and more. Most Cruze trims include the MyLink radio (that streams music via Bluetooth), voice recognition and compatibility with Pandora Internet radio. A seveninch color touch-screen stereo with navigation and USB port can be had in virtually every model, while driver convenience packages on most trims include a number of useful options such as power seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rear-vision camera and more. The Cruze’s standard and optional powerplants are diminutive but more than adequate. The base car is equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder that produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the LT and LTZ you’ll get and a smaller — less is more here, apparently — 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that’s also rated at 138 horsepower but with 25 pound-feet more torque. The 1.8 offers a choice of a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo is only available with the automatic. All Cruze models include 10 airbags, while the standard stability control includes a rollover-sensing program that will deploy the airbags if it detects the car is about to tip over. !

Specs Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 1.8-liter DOHC I4 (138) Optional engine (hp): 1.4-liter DOHC I4, turbocharged (138); 2.0-liter DOHC I4, turbo-diesel (151) Layout: Front-engine, frontwheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) Buick Verano Overall: Little Buick sedan boasts a nice ride, big trunk and a refined cabin for a luxury sedan starting around $25,000; Turbo model a real Q-ship.

In only four years the Verano has become a serious option for entry-level luxury buyers, especially against rivals such as the Acura ILX. But the 250-horsepower Turbo model, introduced for 2013, will have plenty of competition for its starting price as Mercedes-Benz and Audi have compact sedans with similar power for similar bucks. As the name implies, the Turbo uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that happens to be borrowed from the Regal, which maintains its edge with AWD . . . which you can’t get in any Verano. The Turbo Verano comes with all the toys that are optional on lesser models, including heated leather seats and steering wheel and a nine-speaker Bosebrand audio system. And it costs $30,000 compared with the larger Regal GS at $36,000, which has the same basic engine. Quite the bargain. Regular Verano models start at a much lower $24,500 and although base models come with leatherette (vinyl) and cloth seats, premium versions feature plenty of wood trim and overstuffed leathercovered seat cushions. For any compact car, this is groundbreaking. The Verano’s designers say they’ve gone out of their way to make the cabin a place of exemplary peace and quiet. They’ve added five layers of acoustic material within the headliner, sound-absorbing foam and other insulating materials stuffed into every possible nook and cranny, all door openings are triple sealed and the use of thicker windshield and side glass for additional noise reduction. Other sound-defeating measures include specially designed tires and alloy wheels plus “quiet-tuned” intake and exhaust systems for the standard 180-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission (there’s an optional six-speed manual for the Turbo). Other standard gear includes dual-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, 10 standard airbags and GM’s OnStar concierge/help line that can also activate various functions (open doors, check fuel level, etc.) from your smart phone. Also optional is a heated steering wheel, push-button start, electronic parking brake, premium Bose audio package and 18inch alloy wheels (17-inchers are standard). !

Specs Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.4-liter DOHC 14 (180) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-liter DOHC I4, turbocharged (250) Layout: Front-engine, frontwheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual (turbo only); sixspeed automatic (std. on 2.4. opt. on turbo) MPG (city/hwy): 21/32 (2.4) Safety: Front airbags; front/ rear side-impact airbags; front knee airbags; sidecurtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (lb.): 3,300

2015 AUTO SHOW

Dodge Ram HD Overall: After a serious and rare upgrade — the first non-SRT vehicle to get the hotrod 6.4-liter “Hemi” V8 — the model is standing pat for 2015.

The 2014 model year was a real re-balance for the Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups. When Ram upped the stakes with their optional Cummins turbo-diesel available in bad, badder and baddest grades in 2013, that left a rather big step down to the base 5.7-liter V8. What to do? Well, add the 6.4-liter SRT V8 to the lineup, of course. But back to the Cummins. The tamest of the 6.7-liter inline six-cylinder powerplants is rated at 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, while the intermediate version pushes those numbers to 370 horsepower and 800 pound-feet. For maximum thrust and grunt, the 385-horse unit lays down 865 pound-feet for 2015, which very lightly, and likely insignificantly, outshines Ford. The Cummins can be matched to a six-speed manual transmission (the only shift-it-yourself in its class), or a six-speed automatic. The result is a truck that can haul and tow up to 17,000 pounds of trailer weight and up to 1,800 pounds of tongue weight using a conventional Class V hitch. The turbo-diesel has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help decelerate the vehicle. That means shorter stops and less brake wear. Another Cummins bonus is that the interval between oil changes is 15,000 miles. Still available is Chrysler’s venerable 383-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 with a seemingly light 400 pound-feet of torque. Now back to the 6.4. Previously an SRT exclusive in the car line, it’s optional in both the 2500 and 3500. The 6.4 delivers 410 horses and 429 poundfeet of torque. For maximum towing, a coil-sprung rear suspension with air bladders is available on 2500 models, while 3500 use optional air springs integrated into the existing leaf-sprung suspension. Tow ratings of just under 18,000 pounds and 30,000 pounds, respectively, are simply ridiculous. Of course four-wheel-drive is available, but in the HD it has a disconnect feature that disengages the forward driveshaft from the transfer case when not needed, thus increasing fuel performance by one mpg. Inside, owner/operators will also appreciate the cab design, with a dashboard with available touchscreen controls for the communications and climate control systems. The center console features two-tier storage space. Regular, Crew and Mega cab models return, with a variety of box sizes and equipment levels that would make your head spin. !

Specs Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup Base engine (hp): 5.7-liter OHV V8 (383) Optional engines (hp): 6.4-liter OHV V8 (410); 6.7-liter OHV I6, turbo-diesel (350, 370, 385) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /fourwheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual (std. with turbo-diesel); six-speed automatic (opt. on 6.7, std. with 5.7, 6.4) Safety: Front airbags, side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes Weight (lb.): 5,300

Kia Sedona Overall: A purposeful people/cargo hauler that has finally caught up to the minivan competition.

The Sedona is part of the minivan pack, but it really hasn’t been considered a major player. Perhaps all that could change for the 2015 model year. The style and proportions are right on the money and it’s devoid of superfluous curves and angles. The interior is as clean and uncluttered as the exterior and it abounds in handy touches. There’s room for up to eight people with the standard secondrow bench seat, or seven with the optional second-row lounge chairs (with retractable leg rests) that can be positioned facing the front or the rear. Either mid-row arrangement slides fore and aft over a wide range and both the 60:40 split bench or chairs stow against the front seats to maximize cargo space. Mounted within the Sedona’s stiffer platform is a 3.3-liter V6 with 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. As used in the Kia Sorento and Cadenza, the engine is more of a fuel miser and should outperform the 3.5 in this regard, although as of this writing the actual mpg stats are not available. The base SX comes with 17-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, backup camera and a basic audio system. The EX adds 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seats (heated in front), dual-zone air conditioning, power-sliding side doors, and touch-screen controls for the

entertainment, communications and climate control. The new SXL trim level provides full-on luxury with premium perforated leather-seat coverings. There’s also tri-zone climate control, a dual-panel sunroof, push-button start, 19-inch wheels and a power-opening tailgate

2015 AUTO SHOW

GMC Sierra HD Overall: The heavy hauling 2500 and 3500 (3/4-ton and one-ton) HD models have been redesigned and updated for 2015.

Selecting a big-rig Sierra over a similar Chevrolet Silverado HD mostly boils down to which body style you prefer since both pickups are identical beneath their newfor-2015 shiny sheetmetal. However one other important difference is that the GMC offers the luxury-laden Denali crew cab, in addition to the base, SLE and SLT trim levels. Chevrolet doesn’t. The usual cab styles return, but the extended-cab is replaced by a new double-cab with rear doors that are hinged at the front. Both the 66-inch and 96-inch cargo boxes have been strengthened and the rear bumper has built-in recessed steps at the corners for easier bed access. All HD powertrains return unaltered for 2015. The base 6.0-liter gasoline V8 puts out 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. It can be optioned with a compressed-natural-gas fuel system, although you lose 59 horsepower and 47 pound-feet of torque in the process. For serious grunt work, there’s the optional 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 rated at 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque. Both employ six-speed automatic transmissions: a GMdeveloped Hydramatic comes with the 6.0; and the turbo-diesel employs an Allison-built unit. Chevy mates its “smart exhaust brake system” to the turbo-diesel that, when the vehicle is coasting, holds compressed exhaust gasses inside the engine’s cylinders, creating resistance, which in turn slows down the truck without touching the brakes. The result is less wear and tear on the brake hardware and greater control for the driver, especially when hauling or towing heavy loads downhill. Included is a stability program that reduces a trailer’s tendency to wobble about, while hill-start assist prevents the HD from rolling backward when on an incline. As is the case with all GMC pickups, the level of content, body and powertrain customization is practically limitless, guided only by your specific needs and budget. !

Specs Type: Heavy-duty threequarter /one-ton pickup Base engine (hp): 6.0-liter OHV V8 (360, 301 CNG) Optional engine (hp): 6.6-liter OHV V8, turbo-diesel (397) Layout: Front-engine, rear- / four-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic Safety: Front airbags; anti-lock brakes Weight (lb.): 5,630

The spacious GT hatchback is arguably the better looker and is ideal for toting larger gear. That can’t be said for the Elantra coupe that, although sportier, clearly wasn’t a fan favorite since Hyundai decided to delete it for the 2015 model year. The GT is slightly shorter overall than the sedan, but its expanded cargo area allows for 23 cubic-feet of room with the rear seats up (compared with 15 for the sedan) and more than 50 with them folded flat. Base sedans use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 145 horsepower and 130 pound-feet of torque. It’s rated at 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway with the optional six-speed automatic. A 2.0-liter fourcylinder that’s rated at 173 horses and 166 pound-feet of torque is available in the sedan, but comes standard with the GT. The base Elantra sedan and GT include the usual power-operated assortment, a six-speaker audio system, air conditioning, cruise control and more. Stepping up to the Sport and Limited sedan trims add the 2.0 engine plus leather seats (heated in front and back), power sunroof, cruise control, power driver’s seat, pushbutton start and 17inch wheels (16-inchers are standard). The option list includes keyless push-button start, automatic headlights, premium 360-watt sound package and a touch-screen navigation system with rearview camera. Both body styles can be had with optional items that include a navigation system, 360-watt premium sound system and dual-zone climate control. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Kia Optima Overall: You can readily spot any Kia model at a distance. There’s nothing wrong with that since it has helped the Optima become a player among sedan brands.

The Optima drops to third place from second in Kia’s sedan hierarchy with the arrival of the big-dog K900. However this sedan still looks as fresh as ever since its 2014 front end and grille updating. In back it received a revised trunk lid and a lower bumper area where the exhaust exits. Inside, seat fabrics were upgraded and a larger highresolution touch screen for the optional navigation and communications systems was installed. The Optima’s engine entry point is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder rated at 192 horsepower, while an optional 274-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine quenches your thirst for thrust. The Optima Hybrid uses the 2.4-liter gas engine plus a 47-horsepower electric motor supplied by a 47-kilowatt lithium-polymer battery pack for a total system output of 199 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. Note that a six-speed automatic transmission (and not a traditional continuously variable unit) is used in the Hybrid as well as with both gas engines. Fuel economy for the Hybrid is 36 mpg in the city and 40 mpg highway, better than the 2.4 gas engine’s 23/34 ratings. The hybrid can also travel at speeds of up to

60 mph without assistance from its gas-engine partner. With four trim levels — base LX, EX, SX and SX-T — the Optima ranges far and wide to satisfy a variety of budgets. Throw in the car’s classy looks along with a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty and it’s a lock for Optima buyers. !

Chevrolet Corvette Overall: The Corvette makes economic mincemeat out of the competition, excelling in design and total performance.

Before the introduction of the 2014 Corvette Stingray, it had been an awfully long time since a Corvette was considered beautiful. The wedge-shaped body and grinning grille are symbolic of previous editions, yet the car is completely new. The convertible is not merely a coupe without a roof, but a highly detailed sculpture that carries shapes and themes from the body to the interior and back. But the reborn Z06 — available in both coupe and convertible this time — turns that beauty straight to menace. New for 2015, it has wider wheels than the base Stingray and it gets a plethora of air intakes on the body and the carbonfiber hood. Other mods include a front splitter with carbon spats, extended fender flares, a three-inch wider rear fascia and the small rear spoiler from the regular Stingray’s performance package. If that’s not enough, the optional Z07 package gets the car even more track ready with unique adjustable aerodynamic bits, stickier Michelin tires and Brembo-sourced carbon ceramic brake rotors. The dashing cockpit is the design equal to the exterior, something the ‘Vette faithful have waited ages to see. Because the new Z06 is supposed to replace both the old ZR1 as well as the Z06, its engine is more closely related to the former. It uses a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 with 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. Those are serious jumps over the base Stingray with its 6.2-liter V8 worth 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. It uses direct fuel injection and variable valve timing to best the previous 6.2’s rating of 430/424. Both the seven-speed manual transmission and newly introduced optional eight-speed automatic are available in the Stingray and Z06 lines.

Specs Type: Two-door coupe/ convertible Base engine (hp): 6.2-liter OHV V8 (455) Optional engine (hp): 6.2-liter OHV V8, supercharged (650, Z06) Layout: Front-engine, rearwheel-drive The seven-speed’s “Active Rev Matching” blips the throttle when upshifting/downshifting for smooth gear transitions and better vehicle stability, such as when gearing down while braking for a corner. Standard is a five-position selector knob with settings for Weather (ratchets up the stability and traction controls), Eco for maximum fuel economy, Tour (standard default position), Sport (firms up the suspension

and throttle settings and reduces exhaust backpressure) and Track (really firm and loud plus it adds a lap timer to the electronic gauge panel). The Z51 performance option for the base Stingray boosts engine output to 460 ponies and adds a performance suspension and exhaust system, beefier Brembo-labeled brakes, larger wheels and tires and both differential and oil coolers. !

Transmissions: Seven-speed manual; eight-speed automatic (opt.) MPG (city/hwy): 17/29 (base, MT) Safety: Front airbags; sideimpact airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. Weight (lb.): 3,300 (coupe)

2015 AUTO SHOW

Nissan Rogue Overall: The Rogue was introduced for the 2014 model year with an optional third-row seat; previous generation hangs around as the Rogue Select.

The wedge-shaped secondgeneration Rogue better competes in the tall-wagon segment that’s dominated by the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. Introduced for 2014, it makes significant strides in interior and exterior styling. The latter comes in the form of an available thirdrow seat. Sure, it’s tight on space back there and, when deployed, pretty much wipes out any semblance of cargo space. But it’s also there when you need it and makes the Rogue practically the only small-and-tall wagon (with the possible exception of the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe) in its class to offer one. Compared to the previous model, the current Rogue has shrunk by an inch in overall length (attributed to reduced front and rear overhangs), while the distance between the front and rear wheels is up by 0.6-inches and overall height has been upped by 1.2 inches. The sheetmetal is a bit bolder looking than before, although it might not be quite as attractive. Perhaps that’s why Nissan is keeping the previous top-selling model around for one more season, labelling it the Rogue Select, and selling it alongside the new Rogue at a lower (by about $2,500) price point. The standard powerplant continues to be a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder. It’s matched to an improved continuously variable transmission with a sport mode for snappier performance. Nissan has focused on reducing friction (by a claimed 40 percent)

and improving the transmission’s belt and pulley system for better operating efficiency. That seems to have paid off since the Rogue’s mpg rating of 26 in the city and 33 on the highway beats the previous 22/28 rating, which can now be easier to achieve with a standard Eco mode button for 2015. All models — S, SV, and SL — continue to be available with all-wheel-drive. Neat interior features include the Divide-N-Hide cargo system, like the Versa Note hatchback, and all the usual power goodies. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Mazda6 Overall: The stunning Mazda6 sedan enters its sophomore year with more options, but still only one engine.

Mazda should be praised for following through on its promises. While other automakers make statements about losing weight and then abandon them like it’s the third week of January, Mazda’s SkyActiv philosophy keeps turning out cars that are trimmer. That philosophy also extends to not offering a hybrid powertrain option, which is tantamount to sacrilege. Instead, it pursues internal-combustionengine refinement under the SkyActiv label. From most angles, the Mazda6 is more expressive than the previous car and closely resembles Mazda’s Shinari and Takeri concept cars that revealed a new styling direction. The distance between the front and rear wheels was increased by about two inches (the longest among its direct competitors, claims Mazda) for extra passenger room, while overall length has been reduced by about the same amount. The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. The uniqueness of this engine is its higherthan-usual 13:1 compression ratio that gives it much of its extra punch. In addition, its specialized components, including the pistons and direct fuelinjection system (which cools the

combustion chambers to allow the higher compression), means it can run on regular-grade fuel. One promise Mazda has delayed is its 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel with 173 horsepower and 310 poundfeet of torque, which has been shelved for at least another calendar year while it sorts out emission/performance issues. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual that uses a MX-5 Miata-inspired short-throw shifter, or

the optional six-speed automatic. The base Sport model comes with the usual power and comfort ingredients. Adding the automatic transmission gets you a touch-screen display, a rear-view camera and Bluetooth short-range networking. The mid-level Touring increases the content level with new keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, power driver’s seat and 19-inch wheels (17-inchers are standard), while the Grand Touring bulks up with standard

navigation, premium Bose-brand sound system and laser-guided speed control that applies the brakes when a potential rear-end collision appears imminent. Among the more interesting options is Mazda’s Intelligent Energy Loop (i-ELOOP). The system’s compact capacitor stores energy from the alternator, then feeds it directly to the car’s numerous electrical components. Mazda claims the i-ELOOP cuts fuel consumption by about five percent. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Lincoln MKC Overall: Lincoln takes it small and tall, which is in step with many other producers of premium compact wagons.

The new-for-2015 MKC faces off against the BMW X3 Mercedes-Benz GLA and other upscale car-based wagons. Lincoln’s design team started with the Ford Escape platform and created a unique and handsome shape. The MKC’s luxury content ensures there will be little, if any, commonality with the Escape. It’s also a quieter inside, thanks in part to Active Noise Control, which uses hidden microphones and a special control module to create opposing sound waves hat cancel out unwanted engine noises. The system can be combined with continuously adjustable shock damping, powerassisted electric steering, variable transmission shift mapping plus traction and stability control to form “Lincoln Drive Control.” The result, says Lincoln, is improved ride and handling in Normal, Sport, or Comfort modes, as selected by the driver. The base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 240 horsepower and a stout 270 poundfeet of torque. The optional 2.3-liter turbo-four is rated at 285 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Each is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shift controls. Front-wheel-drive is standard, with all-wheeldrive an option on the 2.0, but standard fare with the 2.3. Base “Premiere” models include dual-zone climate control, heated poweradjustable front-row seats, backup camera, remote start and “Lincoln Premium Sound” with voice-activated communications and infotainment systems. The “MKC Select” model adds a 10-way power passenger seat (same as the driver’s), power folding outside mirrors and nickel-plated 18-inch alloy wheels. The top-line “Reserve” comes with a panorama sunroof, voiceactivated navigation, hands-free power liftgate and heated and cooled front seats. Options include heated second-row seats and steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers and automatic highbeam headlamps. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Ford F-150 Overall: Stronger, faster, lighter best describes the new aluminum-bodied F-Series; retooled from top to bottom, bumper to tailgate and under the hood.

The world’s best-selling pickup looks to hold on to its title despite General Motors and Ram charging hard to catch up. It’s the truck category that leads the way these days in technology advancements and Ford’s adoption of aluminum body panels for the F-150 (to be joined by Ford’s Super Duty series for 2016) is one heck of a game changer and in more ways than one. The big news is Ford’s switch from steel to more dent- and ding- and rust-averse aluminum body panels, saving as much as 700 pounds (Ford claims) in the process, depending on whether you’re talking about regular-, extended SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew versions. All are perched on a new ladder-type frame that’s also stronger and actually lighter by a few pounds. That reduced heft allows properly kitted-out F-150s to tote and tow bigger payloads, which is what pickup trucks are all about, right? Base trucks now come with a new 3.5-liter V6 with 283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, while an equally new twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 that’s rated at 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque is optional. Carried over from last year are two of Ford’s workhorse powerplants: a 3.5-liter twinturbocharged V6 producing 365 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque; and a 5.0-liter V8 worth 385 horsepower and 387 poundfeet of torque (up from 360/380). That leaves out last year’s 411-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 that was standard in the way-off-roadcapable SVT Raptor (its replacement is expected to arrive by mid-2015). Inside, the cabin, or “office” for many truck owners, has been completely transformed and on up-level models approaches luxurycar standards, particularly the Lariat and King Ranch trims. The FX4 off-road option package (firmer suspension, skid plates and a locking rear axle) can be added to most 4x4 models. !

Kia Sorento Overall: My, how Kia’s tall wagon has grown up over the past few years; the current edition has its style groove in full swing with a cabinfull of handy features.

Following a design freshening, platform stiffening and power upgrading for 2014, the Sorento swaggers forth into 2015 as cool and competent as ever. And why not, since most competing three-row wagons require a lot more coin to seal the deal. The Sorento’s stout sub-frame supports a 175-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder powerplant that’s rated at 191 horsepower and 181 poundfeet of torque. Optional is a 3.3-liter V6 producing 290-horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. With either engine a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls is the sole cog swapper. The all-wheeldrive system (available with either engine) is a full-time unit that constantly varies the torque to all four wheels and can direct power to the outer wheels in high-speed turning situations for added control (known as torque vectoring). Along with the Sorento’s LX, EX and SX trims, a SX Limited model is loaded up with a wood-trimmed interior with ventilated soft leather-covered seats. 2015 AUTO SHOW

Mazda CX-5 Overall: Mazda makes one of the most enjoyable tall wagons to drive and doesn’t punish you or your passengers; seriously fuel-efficient too.

Mazda is on a roll with its latest generation of vehicles, although would love to see even a fraction of the customers buying Escapes from its old partner Ford. The attractively designed five-passenger CX-5’s mechanical bits are promoted under the “Skyactiv” name that made its initial appearance with the 2012 Mazda3. More than simply a marketing slogan, SkyActiv represents a holistic transformation of the powertrain plus various other components that help save fuel in addition to turning Mazda vehicles into better driving machines. From a chassis and suspension perspective, the automaker’s engineers have attempted to infuse the vehicle with as much MX-5 Miata-type sporty behavior as possible, combined with highly efficient engines and transmissions. The base powerplant consists of a highcompression 2.0-liter four-cylinder that, due to its unique design, is able to run on low-grade 87-octane fuel. Output is rated at 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. Fuel consumption is pegged at 26 mpg city and 35 highway for frontwheel-drive models equipped with the manual transmission, or 26/32 with the optional extraquick-shifting six-speed automatic. The much peppier 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 184 horses and 185 pound-feet of torque and doesn’t penalize much at the pump either as it’s rated only one mpg worse than the 2.0. Mazda hasn’t scrimped loading up even the most basic CX-5 Sport model. You get the usual air conditioning and power-operated items, along with cruise control and push-button start. Moving up to the Touring gets you Bluetooth audio/communications connectivity, upgraded seats, color display monitor, steering-wheelmounted controls and a blind-spot warning system, along with keyless entry for 2015. The Grand Touring adds a moonroof, leather seat covers (heated in front), power-adjustable driver’s seat and dual-zone climate control, along with active smart braking technology that can “see” stopped cars in front and slow you down before a collision.. !

2015 AUTO SHOW

Chevrolet Malibu Overall: The Malibu development team is likely breathing easier after turning around a mid-cycle redesign in only 18 months, so no little change for 2015.

It has been a couple years since Chevrolet redesigned the 2013 Malibu to a less-thaninterested public. The company suffered huge criticism for the car’s lack of rear seat room, for one, and even with a huge effort to fix it all for 2014, things haven’t really rebounded. What kind of huge effort? For 2014, Chevrolet rolled forward all the changes it had planned for the Malibu’s mid-cycle update, probably two years earlier than planned. Exterior changes included a more aggressive grille and lower fascia, although the Camaro-inspired taillights and rear end remained unchanged. Inside, the Malibu’s stylists appeared to have gone all out to improve on the previous update. A redesigned center console provided more room and storage, while engineers somehow used black magic to deliver another 1.25 inches of rear legroom without altering the exterior dimensions. Standard on all but the base model is Chevrolet’s MyLink touch-screen audio/ communications system with a faceplate that pivots upward to reveal a hidden sixinch-deep storage area. The base engine remains a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 197 horsepower, although it features direct fuel injection and a system that shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at rest, then fires it up when the brake pedal is released. The latter, all by itself, is estimated to help fuel efficiency by five percent. Optional is an updated turbocharged 2.0-liter fourcylinder rated at 259 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. New for 2015 is an OnStar-based mobile internet Wi-Fi hotspot so that all aboard can get online whenever they want. !

Specs Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.5-liter DOHC I4 (197) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-liter DOHC I4, turbocharged (259) Layout: Front-engine, frontwheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic MPG (city/hwy): 23/35 Safety: Front airbags; front/ rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; frontknee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (lb.): 3,390

2015 AUTO SHOW

Honda CR-V Overall: Honda’s perennial compact tall wagon receives a number of mid-life interior/exterior updates plus a touch more power.

The CR-V has established itself as a can-do wagon that combines smart looks, lively performance and impressive fuel economy. For its mid-cycle refresh, the CR-V receives a new front fascia (grille, bumper and headlight pods), taillights and wheel designs. Inside, there’s a redesigned dash and floor console layout with more soft-touch materials for the door panels. Mechanically, an upgrade to direct injection (fuel sprayed under high pressure directly into the cylinders instead of through the intake manifold) for the CR-V’s 2.4-liter fourcylinder engine yields a torque increase to 181 pound-feet from the previous 163 pound-feet. Horsepower remains at 185. In addition, a continuously variable transmission replaces the previous five-speed automatic. As a result, fuel economy improves to 27 mpg in the city and 34 highway (previously 23/31) for frontwheel-drive models. Undoubtedly, the CR-V’s passenger comfort and generous cargo capacity will also help maintain the CR-V at the forefront, as will the fold-down backseat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the liftgate. Access through the rear makes it easy to load large/bulky items onto a flat load floor that can be extended to more than five feet in length. In base LX trim, the CR-V comes with a significant amount of standard equipment, including a center console armrest, sliding sun visors and rear console ventilation ducts. The EX adds a power moonroof, fog lights and a few other niceties. Popping for the EX-L adds leather seat covers, 10-way heated driver’s seat, up-level audio system and access to the optional navigation system. For 2015, Honda has added a top-line CR-V Touring trim level that comes with leading-edge safety aids including Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision and lanedeparture Warning and Lane Keeping Assist. A navigation system and a power tailgate are also part of the Touring package. !
