The 500 Festival:

Feel the Rhythm of May

Each year hundreds of thousands of people from around the world embrace the magical month of May in Indianapolis. Last year alone, more than 500,000 people attended 500 Festival events. Now in its 57th year, the Festival continues to capture the significance of this month-long celebration both for the community and race fans world-wide. Whether the sounds of feet hitting the pavement, engines revving, bands playing, kids laughing or the cacophony of a parade, the month of May brings energy and vitality to our community each year. This year’s theme, “Feel the Rhythm of May" perfectly describes the role the 500 Festival plays in creating energy and vitality for our community with its 50 annual events and programs. The 500 Festival celebrates the success of the Indianapolis 500® and adds to the quality of life for the citizens of Indiana and their guests. The events and programs, mostly free and produced largely by volunteers, enhance the image of Indianapolis and Indiana by showcasing the city and state’s cultural, educational and social benefits to the world. It takes a great team to make it all possible and we’re extremely fortunate and grateful to our team, particularly our 7,000 devoted volunteers. Thanks to our Board of Directors, Foundation Trustees, staff, sponsors, members, donors, participants, spectators and guests. Special thanks to Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and his team, The Hulman George family and the entire Indianapolis Motor Speedway team. National in scope, yet homegrown in spirit, the 500 Festival energizes the month of May in Indianapolis! Sincerely, John Crisp Chairman of the Board

Will. Train. Harder.

If you’re thinking about transitioning from the 5K to the Mini-Marathon, or just want to make sure you’re on pace for the big race, be sure to mark your calendars for the 500 Festival Training Series, presented by OrthoIndy. The Training Series features the use of the ChronoTrack Bib Timing System on certified courses. The Series is a low-pressure opportunity for participants to gauge their progression in preparation for the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. It gradually increases in distance, coinciding with a typical training program’s schedule. To give you a feel for the Mini, the Training Series courses incorporate parts of the actual Mini-Marathon course. You do not need to be registered for the Mini-Marathon to participate.

500 Festival Memorial Service, presented by Rolls-Royce

Honoring those who fearlessly make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom

It’s only fitting that the 500 Festival kicks off Memorial Day weekend by honoring Indiana men and women who have fallen in service for this great nation. The service includes the Joint Services Color Guard presentation of colors and performances by the National Guard’s 38th Infantry Division Band and the Capital City Chorus. Special guest Ronan Tynan will perform the National Anthem with the 38th Infantry Division Band and a stirring rendition of Amazing Grace. A wreath-laying ceremony – dedicated to the memory of Hoosiers who sacrificed their lives to defend our freedom – includes reading the names of Indiana servicemen and women who have fallen within the past year. A military funeral Cortege, including a horsedrawn caisson presented by the Military Department of Indiana Ceremonial Unit, will symbolize Army soldiers who accompany the deceased’s remains to the gravesite. The riderless horse represents those who fall as warriors and will not ride again. The event will be televised live and commercial-free by WNDY-TV.

Some train for months in hopes of attaining a PR. Some walk with family and friends in memory of a loved one. Some are trying it out for the first time and thrive from the energy of the spirited volunteers. Some make it a tradition to help kick off the month of May in Indianapolis every year. All cross the finish line. The OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon has become one of the 500 Festival’s largest events since its initial running in 1977. The event grew rapidly in the 1980s and even more throughout the 1990s. Today, a field of 35,000 runners and walkers take to Indianapolis streets the first Saturday in May, with another 4,000 participating in the Finish Line 500 Festival 5K.

IPL 500 Festival PARADE

A spectacle to see One of the original events produced by the 500 Festival, the IPL 500 Festival Parade has grown to be one of the signature events held in the United States each year. Held on May 24, the eve of the Indianapolis 500®, 300,000 spectators from around the country will line the streets of downtown Indianapolis for one of the nation’s premier parades, alongside the Pasadena Tournament of Roses and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. For the past 57 years, the Parade has been a pillar of Hoosier culture in the 500 Festival event line-up. In addition to a spectacular live event, the Parade is broadcast nationally on NBC Sports Network and locally on CBS affiliate WISH-TV. The Parade features larger-than-life floats, celebrities, marching bands, patriotic and specialty units and giant helium balloons. In addition, the IPL 500 Festival Parade has a distinction that no other parade has — the starting line-up of the 2014 Indianapolis 500® riding in the traditional rows of three.

Hardy is a senior underwriting consultant with Mini-Marathon title sponsor OneAmerica Financial Partners. We asked them about their experience and what advice they have for newcomers. Q: Why did you become 500 Festival volunteer and return year after year? Castetter: “I’ve been a 500 Festival volunteer for 20-plus years. IPL and I take pride in being good stewards to the community. Volunteering is one of the best ways to show our pride.” Hardy: “I enjoy giving back to the community. It’s great to be part of something that brings all types of people and excitement to the city.” Q: What is your favorite thing about the Mini-Marathon? Castetter: “I have worked the start line for many years, and the start is definitely my favorite. It’s breathtaking to see 35,000 participants take off. It’s a site you never forget.”

Hardy: “I enjoy the Mini because it’s constantly growing and changing. I enjoy interacting with the participants, spectators and people from around the country and sometimes from other parts of the world.” Q: What is your advice for first-time volunteers? Castetter: “First and foremost, remember to enjoy the experience. There will be stressful moments, but when all is said and done, whether you’re working or participating, we’re all there to have a great time.” Hardy: “I have been volunteering since 2006 and my best advice is just to have fun. Everyone is there to enjoy the events and — usually — the weather. We are there to help make it as enjoyable as possible.”

KeyBank 500 Festival Snakepit Ball

The place to be on race eve What’s with the name, you ask?

The Snake Pit has a long, colorful history at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It’s part urban legend, but some of the craziness described by your parents, grandparents or aunts and uncles definitely happened! Fans started to gather in the infield at IMS as early as the 1920s. But the hearty partying didn’t start until the 1970s in the infield inside Turn 1, which became known as the infamous Snake Pit, a combination of Woodstock and Spring Break for thousands of Midwestern kids. In 1981, the track built bleachers in Turn 1 and Snake Pit party-goers migrated to the Turn 4 infield. With increased law enforcement in the early 90’s, the Snake Pit became more of a festive place to be, rather than a party place. The Snake Pit “feel” nearly died out in result. But times and attitudes changed, as did the look of the Speedway. Grandstands were built inside Turn 1, which crimped the style of many in the Snake Pit. The Snake Pit eventually faded away by the mid-1990s. But in recent years – it’s back – now in Turn 3 and with the blessing of Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials. No, it’s no longer your mom and dad’s Snake Pit. That was a one-of-a-kind place, for better or worse. But the new Snake Pit still has the attitude, spirit and mojo of the original. It’s the ultimate place to party during the Indianapolis 500.

The Snakepit Ball has been a race-eve tradition since 2004. Known as the place to see the stars, the official black-tie affair will be host to celebrities and VIPs in town for the largest spectacle in sports, the Indianapolis 500®. Red carpet arrivals will be televised on WTHR-TV beginning at 6 p.m. For the last 11 years, the 500 Festival Snakepit Ball has been host to many celebrities and VIPs. Celebrated on the eve of the Indianapolis 500 with drinks in hand, plentiful amounts of food and live music, it’s a throwback to the ‘anything goes’ mantra of the Indianapolis 500’s of decades past.

500 Festival & Indianapolis 500® Education Program, presented by Indiana University Health

Indiana fourth-graders put the pedal to the metal The 500 Festival and Indianapolis 500® Education Program, presented by Indiana University Health, strives to educate and foster creativity in thousands of Hoosier fourth graders through historical, social and economic significance of the 500 Festival, Indianapolis 500® and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway®. This Indiana Academic Standards-based curriculum is designed to coincide with Indiana’s fourth-grade focus on state history. The program provides teachers with lesson plans, activities and a corresponding DVD to teach students about the 500 Festival, Indianapolis 500® and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway®. In addition, all classrooms that participate have the opportunity to attend one of eight subsidized Study Trips to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway® in April or May. During the course of the Study Trip, fourth-grade classrooms travel from station to station to learn more about IMS and the Indianapolis 500®. Stations include, but are not limited to: A scavenger hunt in the IMS Hall of Fame Museum™ ■ A tour of the Pagoda and Victory Podium ■ Seeing an IndyCar up close and personal ■ Being inside the Medical Hospital that is used throughout the month of May. ■

There are two new stations at this year’s Study Trip. The Driver Equipment station shows students the ins and outs of a driver’s helmet and what drivers need to wear on race day to stay safe. The Numbers of the 500 station encourages students to think quickly on their feet as they will be given math equations to solve through a Jeopardy game. In 2014, more than 25,000 students will participate in this free program and nearly 9,000 will attend a Study Trip to IMS. Since its inception in 2004, more than 200,000 Indiana fourth-grade students have participated in this Program. The 500 Festival Foundation generates funds to support youth and educational programs of the 500 Festival, such as the 500 Festival & Indianapolis 500® Education Program.

NEW! N EW!

500 Festival KidsFit

13 weeks of fitness

The 500 Festival is pleased to introduce KidsFit, a new youth fitness initiative for the 2014 season. In an effort to fight childhood obesity, the KidsFit program encourages Indiana youth to be more active and pursue a healthy lifestyle. KidsFit is a 13-week program that will target 5th and 6th grade students across the state of Indiana. The 500 Festival has identified and aligned program activities with the Indiana Department of Education’s Indiana State Academic Standards for Health and Physical Education. Participants of the program will complete 12 weekly lessons/activities. Participants will log and track their progress, running one mile each week leading up to the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. The goal is for students to run 13.1 miles over the course of a 13-week period, the equivalent of a half marathon. The program will culminate on May 3, 2014 when a select number of participants are invited to downtown Indianapolis to finish their final 1.1 mile along the MiniMarathon course. Students will finish at the same finish line as the 35,000 participants who run the Mini each year. Each finisher will receive a medal and a t-shirt and will have an authentic Mini-Marathon experience. Registration for the 2015 program will open in early fall 2014.
