I am native from Faro, Portugal in March 88. I moved to Lisbon in 2006 and I have been living here ever since, with an exciting pause for a semester in Rome. I have always been a passionate for Lego and drawing but my very first contact with architecture came with the opportunity of getting involved in my family’s house rehab in 2002. Thereby I decided to ingress arts high school and then architecture university. My interests in history and heritage guided me to Rome in 2009, where I strengthened my acquaintances and started the research for my master thesis ‘Building in Built: Intersticial Spaces of the antique Saldanha’s property, in Lisbon’, completed in 2011. Besides arts education, I pratice sports since childhood; at first acrobatic gymnastics for competition during a decade, and lately running in amateur mode. I believe that stay active helps me being strong, determined, focused in the target.

The existent buildings were maintained and the proposal only indicates small demolitions in order to clarify form and volume. The intervention would be flexible and mutable. Each floor of the antique fabric functions as an basic template appropriable open space in which the intervention only occurs in the façade and with the aperture of four skylights to illumination. Therefor the public would appropriate the building for all kind of activities and would progressively occupy it with the house horizontal articulation minimum containers. Industry turns obsolete. Obsolete turns Public. Public turns House. The main proposed program is housing although it is complemented by fixed functions: parking, storehouse, workshop, canteen, coffees and an extensive external vertical communication horizontal articulation public area that remains in all phases of construction.

The proposal is called HOUSE IT and begins with the skeleton of a Tissue Fabric (now deactivated) and fills it with houses that can be assembled and dissembled to answer the needs of this new population. The origin of the project is the maxim ‘easy building and by your own hands’.

A rural property located downhill about 3km from the coast and with great views: south to the ocean and north to the mountain. The main house is a typical stone and whitewash construction from 1940’ and a posterior expansion from the 70’s without material or architectural value. The aim of the project was to draw a fully accessible house for a couple, responding both the needs for agricultural familiar production support and social areas for private recreation. The primary construction was maintained and converted to private areas: a library in the vaulted rooms, the principal bedroom and the access to the guestroom in the 1st floor (rehab of the 70’s construction). The 1st floor room and the terrace allow enjoying the landscape. The expansion focused in the social and technical areas: the living room works as the bridge from old to new and hosts also the hall function. Then a new volume appears drawing an L with the existing old house; in the intersection are collocated all the technical areas, leaving the point of the L and the 180º view for the kitchen and dinning room (preferential social areas in this project). The permanence in the exterior, contacting with the garden and the animals was also privileged as a complement to the internal areas. Therefore the house wouldn’t work without the covered terraces contiguous to the social areas, functioning as living rooms and supporting principal percourses.

The program required the expansion of a traditional catholic graveyard creating a park, a crematorium and a new ingress. From the drawing resultant of the existent buildings, the courses and the graves a grid was established. This grid was reinvented and used to draw the expansion: part rigid/symmetric, part organic. The resultant park shows different heights and vegetal species that result in different shades of privacy and reclusion. The existent traditional graveyard remains as it is: rigid, austere. Although the expansion is designed with fluidity, less construction and more freedom to roam, reflect, worship. The crematorium is located underground, accessible by an incision in park and illuminated by courtyards. The volumes of the building came above the ground in different heights but the only ones visible and accessible directly from the park are those corresponding to the social areas: the coffee and the ceremonial room. The program for the crematorium was developed in order to make possible the corps, the family and the staff courses to coexist perfectly and the accompaniment of the corps by the family until the moment of the cremation.

Building in Built: Intersticial Spaces of the antique Saldanha’s property, in Lisbon master thesis abstract The city’s greatest resource is it’s ground. Buildings have a cycle of life that allows recycling that territory, constantly creating new opportunity spaces. Some of those are interstitial spaces in between properties and buildings. Concerning the development of society it’s required to adapt the urban physical structure; in a continuous process of building in built. This involves acting in pre-existing sceneries, changing shapes and, therefore, their ways to communicate meanings and memories. The value assigned to the city (the esteem in which it is inhabited) is a key issue in today’s interventions regarding potential relationships with the context (whether or not heritage) and its conservation as a bond of memory. Enhancing existing meanings by bringing together different times and ideals of building could be an approach in order to increase the public esteem. The project is developed in the interstitial spaces of the antique Saldanha’s property, in Rua da Junqueira. A local historical, formal and socio-cultural analysis identified the objectual entities responsible for creating mental images and memories of that place. These elements were then reinterpreted with a contemporary regard and used to link different times of construction. The effective use of the city’s interstitial spaces could be a strategy for urban densification in centers and neighborhoods lacking constructing land.
