ABOUT EAST JAVA The least densely populated of Java’s provinces, East Java (Jawa Timur) is a wild, rolling region with dizzying peaks, smoking volcanoes and unspoilt panoramas. For most visitors, East Java is all about the raw, rugged appeal of its volcano-studded scenery and awesome landscapes. Nowhere is more synonymous with this than the sublime Bromo-Tengger Massif, incorporating the volcanic peaks of Gunung Bromo (2392m) and Gunung Semeru (3676m) – Java’s highest mountain. SURABAYA. The regional capital Surabaya has all the accoutrements of a booming Indonesian city, including freeways, multiplexes and a trade-mark traffic problem. MALANG • BLITAR. A civilised city with a temperate climate ringed by some fascinating Hindu temples, while Blitar, birthplace of the first Indonesia president, Soekarno, has more temples and a historic site or two to explore.
Betiri, where there is a protected beach where turtles nest, and Alas Purwo, which is hallowed among surfers for its gigantic reef breaks. ACTIVE ADVENTURES. East Java has plenty to offer for active adventurers: _ Mountains: camping, climbing, paragliding.
_ _ _
_
Rivers: whitewater rafting. National Parks: trekking, camping, safari. Cycling: home to the annual bicycle race, Tour de East Java, the region offers stunning views and scenery to those who wish to explore the countryside by bicycle. Eco adventures: highlands and mountains of East Java are known for its fruits, vegetables, tea and coffee plantations. Tourists are welcome to stay or explore farms and plantations and pick fruits (apples) or participate in various activities.
BATU • MOUNT ARJUNA. A town 15km northwest of Malang, is a large hill resort on the lower reaches of Gunung Arjuna, surrounded by volcanic peaks. It’s a popular weekend destination for locals, but makes a relaxed base during the week, if you want to avoid staying in Malang. BROMO • IJEN PLATEAU. The Bromo area and its puffing giants is an undisputed highlight, but the Ijen Plateau ranks very close, with a stunning crater lake, good hiking and fewer travellers. BALURAN • MERU BETIRI • ALAS PURWO . Baluran National Park is the most accessible of Java’s wildlife reserves, but the southern route through East Java is the most scenic and has two great national parks –Meru

BROMO EXPERIENCE STANDARD ACTIVITIES: Early morning wake-up call • drive to Mount Penanjakan • drive to Mount Bromo • drive around Bromo / Tengger sea sand.
_
TO MOUNT PENANJAKAN. Tourists are suggested to overnight near Bromo and leave for Mount Penanjakan (viewpoint) on a 4WD jeep as early as possible (around 3:00 am) to catch the sunrise. This is a first-class view, photo-taking is a must. The glow of the sun slowly illuminating Bromo mountains which is still covered by thick mists and clouds during the early morning hours.
_
TO MOUNT BROMO. The jeep will drive through the sea sand and park about 1.5km away from the Mount Bromo, as vehicles are not allowed to get too close to this (considered) sacred mountain by the locals Tenggerese. From the car-park tourists may walk or ride a horse to reach the base of a 240 or something steps staircase, and climb Mount Bromo. The active smoking crater could be seen from the rim of the crater, and a short walk at the rim is possible. Again, a view to a kill, a 360 degress view overlooking the entire Bromo complex.
_
AROUND BROMO. Driving around Bromo area and Tengger sea sand is exciting, bumpy, with a lot of views to catch. Green savanna and hills, one is nicknamed “Bukit Teletubbies”.

NEAR BROMO
MADAKARIPURA WATERFALL Believed to be the final meditation place of military Commander-in-Chief, Gajah Mada, of the great Javanese kingdom of Majapahit in East Java, the towering waterfall is fondly dubbed the eternal waterfall, since its waters never cease to pour down an endless rain of blessings on those fortunate enough to walk underneath it. Located not too far from Mount Bromo near the village of Sapih, in the Lombang district, Madakaripura Waterfall is about three hours’ drive from the capital of East Java, Surabaya. The spectacular waterfall lies hidden at the end of a deep valley in the foothills of the Tengger mountain range. To reach this, visitors must trek about 20 minutes crossing rivers and a rocky path, set amongst beautiful sceneries along the way, before reaching the entrance. Here a statue of Majapahit‘s great Commander, Gajah Mada, in the seated position of deep meditation greets visitors before they continue further on foot.
Amukti Palapa "I am Gajah Mada, the commander, will not enjoy palapa (fruit) unless I have conquered Gurun, Seran, Tanjung Pura, Haru, Pahang, Dompo, Bali, Sunda, Palembang, Tumasik" The Amukti Palapa Oath is in reality and historically the embryo of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia, notwithstanding the fact that the territory of Majapahit was then even much wider than the current territory of Indonesia.
