WEST JAVA — BANTEN
BANTEN Tourism Banten, west-most province of Java offers a range of diverse tourism atraction and activities: volcanoes, jungles, eco-tourism, culture, history, culinary, trekking, sailing, snorkeling, diving, surfing, cycling, and more. Most resorts are located by the beach on the west coast of Banten facing the Sunda Strait with its famous volcano island, Krakatau (Krakatau Natural Reserve). An old lighthouse standing tall at Anyer marks the beginning of five-star to backpacker class of hotels and resorts spread along the 31km sandy beach, until Carita. Further beyond, after some traditional fishing villages and towns, a more secluded area of Tanjung Lesung by the beach of Teluk Lada (Pepper Bay) offers luxurious accomodation and private beaches. The inland of Banten is home to indigenous Baduy people, a small population of isolated community which preserve their ancestors tradition for centuries, where marriage is restricted among villagers only, prohibited to use electricity and such. For those seeking some real off the beaten tracks in the rainforest jungle should venture further into the south-west tip of Java, the Ujung Kulon National Park, home of the endangered Javan Rhinceros.
Getting there The Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport is actually located at the Banten province. From the airport to Anyer and Carita takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, and another one and a half hour to reach the Tanjung Lesung by Teluk Lada bay.

BADUY
Barely 150km away from Jakarta, near the western slope of Mount Kendeng, the 12,000-strong Baduy tribe lives in 52 villages. Three of these are in the inner circle of Baduy Dalam, an area where no foreigner can enter and no photographs can be taken. In both outer and inner Baduy, all modern equipment, including computers and mobile phones, is banned for the locals, although habitually allowed for visitors in the outer part. Strict behavior codes apply as well as dress codes. There is a long list of taboos: Baduy people are not allowed to marry outsiders; if they do, they are expelled from the area. They reject all motorized vehicles, not allowed to wear shoes, walk barefoot between the villages and even if they have to go to as far as the capital city Jakarta, they walk barefoot for days and nights. Getting there is challenging, as the villages are located on the hills and valleys, the trail wet and slippery, could take no less than 6 hours to reach the villages. Philosophy The indigenous Baduy people strongly hold their ancestors moral codes, such as: mountains and valleys must not be destroyed, rules must by obeyed, etc,.

WEST JAVA — BANTEN
A brief history In 1527, just as the Portuguese fleet was arriving off the coast, newly converted Javanese Muslims under Sunan Gunungjati captured the port of Banten and the surrounding area from the Sundanese leaders and established the Sultanate of Banten. On June 22, 1596, four Dutch ships under the command of Cornelis of Houtman at last set anchor in the Javanese port of Banten, now Teluk Lada (Pepper Bay). At that time the Portuguese had long been trading with the Sultanate of Banten. The English established a representative site in Banten, a "factory" (which later followed by the Dutch). In addition, the French and Danes also came to trade in Banten. The Dutch came in search of valuable spices, particularly pepper, which was harder to come by ever since their bitter

enemy, King Philip II of Spain, had also become king of Portugal. In Banten, Houtman and his men discovered a city of 40,000 inhabitants, a baffling array of languages (Javanese, Malay, Sudanese, etc.), merchants from Persia, Gujarat, and China with well-established networks, and a complex society prone to intense political conflict. Paradoxically, the first “contact” occurred through the mediation of Portuguese officials dispatched by the local authorities. In the ensuring competition between the European traders, the Dutch emerged as the winners. The Portuguese fled Banten in (1601) after their fleet was destroyed by the Dutch fleet off the coast of Banten. In the early 17th century, Banten was an important commercial center on international trade routes in Asia, rivalling Malacca, Makassar, and eventually Batavia.
