Community Center Guidelines

COMMUNITY CENTER NEW USAGE GUIDELINES

On Thursday, February 11, Nevada Governor Sisolak announced the timeline for Nevada's “safe reopening plan” that began on Monday, February 15 with planned capacity increases on March 15 and other plans for Saturday, May 1. He said statewide coronavirus trends were moving in the right direction and credited this momentum as the reason for his decision. We will continue to work closely with the North Las Vegas Fire Department to schedule additional dates for all Sun City Aliante residents as soon as possible. On February 15, the capacity allowance increased from 25% to 35%. This change does not aﬀect the current health and safety guidelines currently in place at the Community Center, including wearing a mask and adhering to the 6-foot distancing mandate. •

Due to the Governor's mandate, ﬁtness classes were increased in size from 5 participants to 6 participants.

•

Even though the Governor allowed reopening of the locker rooms and single stall shower rooms, the Board has decided to keep them closed at this time out of an abundance of caution.

On March 15, the capacity allowance increased from 35% to 50%. •

The only change we made was that ﬁtness classes increased from 6 to 8 participants.

On April 5, all Nevadans 16 and older will be eligible to schedule COVID-19 vaccination appointments statewide. On May 1, as the state transitions to local authorities, statewide directives that will remain in place to mitigate the spread of COVID19 will include, but are not limited to: • Face Covering Mandate • Social Distancing Safety Protocols Masks are still required to be worn at all times and social distancing safety protocols will remain in place when you are around anyone who is not part of your immediate household, including gatherings anywhere inside or outside.

Based on the Governor's mandates, the following health guidelines will be strictly enforced inside and outside of the Sun City Aliante Community Center: All residents are required to wear masks at all times. inside and outside the Community Center. Masks are required to be worn during all meetings and while playing or going to and from the following indoor and outdoor activities including: • • • • •

For your security and safety, this will be the only way you can enter the building and check-in for all activities, events, meetings, etc. During a previous Board of Directors Meeting, the Board decided upon the use of the newly expanded and remodeled areas. You must make reservations through the Front Desk for all activities throughout the Community Center by calling 702-638-5063. * * * * * * * *

Computers - Limited to 1 hour & 45 minutes per person, 3person-limit per time slot. Reservations required. Library - Limited to 30 minutes per person for book selection, 2-person-limit per time slot. The Library is now open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Reservations required. Activity Room - Limited to Meetings and Clubs only. Shuﬄeboard - Limited to 1 hour & 45 minutes per person, 2person-limit per time slot. Reservations required. Dartboard - Limited to 1 hour & 45 minutes per person, 2person-limit per time slot. Reservations required. Billiard Room - Limited to 1 hour & 45 minutes, 2-personlimit per table. Reservations required. Fireplace Room Seating Area - (Not available at this time.) Grand View Room –Seating Areas (Not available at this time.)

COMMUNITY CENTER RESERVATION INFORMATION Reservations for the Gym, Pool, Fitness Classes, Computers, Billiards, Shuﬄeboard, and Dartboard will take place beginning on Tuesdays, for the following week between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. only. For example, on Tues April 6 and April 13 you will make reservations for the following week. • To make a reservation, you must call 702-638-5063 and provide your name, phone number and the activity you would like to reserve. • Yo u m a y e m a i l y o u r r e s e r v a t i o n t o SCALCCReservations@suncityaliante.us, beginning on Tuesdays for the following week. Please include the following information in your email: 1. Name 2. Address 3. Telephone Number 4. Dates & Times requested, and you will be contacted with a conﬁrmation. •

Each household will be allowed to reserve the Pool Area and the Fitness Center for 45 minutes only as many times as they would like each week at the beginning of the hour. This will permit the Maintenance Team 15 minutes to properly sanitize the equipment. Please arrive as close as possible to your reservation time in the Community Center. After your scheduled time is completed, please leave the Community Center immediately. If you are unable to keep your reservation, please give a "Courtesy Call” to the Front Desk at 702-638-5063; so, another resident may enjoy that time.

We greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness. Due to the mandate for social distancing from State and Health Authorities and in the best interests of Sun City Aliante residents and Team Associates, the Board of Directors authorized the following guidelines for use in the Community Center: • Social Distancing – Stay at least 6 feet apart from other residents. Do not have physical contact with others by shaking hands or touching. • Occupancy Guidelines – Residents must adhere to the COVID-19 occupancy allowance permitted for each room. Each room has a posted sign indicating how many people are allowed in this room. • Designated Areas – Residents can easily identify equipment and areas for use in the Fitness Center and Aerobics Room which have been marked off to indicate proper social distancing. • No congregating - No extra-curricular or social activity should take place in the Community Center or on the property. • Sanitation - Residents must always follow posted sanitation instructions. • Showering - Residents must use the shower in the Pool Area before and after using the Pool. • Food & Beverages – No food will be permitted in any area of the Community Center. Bring beverages in your personal container or a bottled container. • Sharing – Do not share equipment, supplies or towels. • Guest Policy - At this time, guests are not permitted to use the Community Center facilities to give more residents the opportunity to use the facility. • Failure to follow these rules and guidelines may result in loss of access to the Community Center. • A Maintenance Associate will be assigned to the gym, aerobics room, pool, and Billiard Area to continually clean and sanitize these areas. Specific guidelines for use of the Community Center areas are listed below: POOL AREA - Residents must use the shower inside the pool area before and after they use the pool. Equipment will be provided and sanitized before the next use. FITNESS CENTER – Residents must wipe down equipment thoroughly with gym Wipes provided before and after using each machine. FITNESS & POOL CLASSES – When you have a completed class, please leave the equipment you have used for the maintenance team to sanitize. POOL PATIO AREA – This area is available and does not require a reservation, but please call ahead to let us know you are coming. BILLIARD AREA – You may bring your own pool stick. Please check in at the Front Desk for pool balls. When you have finished playing pool, please leave the pool balls on the Billiard Table; so, they can be sanitized by the Maintenance Team. LIBRARY – After 30 minutes, residents must vacate the Library; so, it can be sanitized for the next visitors. You must place any books you have touched in the designated bins next to the shelves for quarantine; do not place a book back on the shelf. No need to return books, but if you do, the books will be quarantined. Please bring any books you are returning to the Front Desk for quarantine storage. SOCIAL HALL – Usage of the room must be coordinated by Office Manager Lori Daniels or Lifestyle Director Debbie Kent.

CRAFT ROOMS #1, #2, & #3 – Club times will be established with Office Manager Lori Daniels or Lifestyle Director Debbie Kent. Club Presidents will decide which club members can attend based on available occupancy and on a rotation schedule to allow all members the opportunity to participate. No sharing of materials will be permitted, and residents must stay at least six (6) feet apart from other residents with no physical contact. VISTA ROOM – Usage of the room must be coordinated by Office Manager Lori Daniels or Lifestyle Director Debbie Kent. AREAS INSIDE THE COMMUNITY CENTER CLOSED AT THIS TIME: • Spa • Sauna • Bathroom Showers • Bathroom Lockers • Kitchen • Water Fountains • Coffee Services • Grand View Room Seating • Fireplace Room Seating PATROL CAR – At this time, due to the lack of volunteers and because of the health guidelines which need to be followed, the Patrol will not yet resume operations. The Patrol Committee will continue to revisit when it is appropriate to begin Patrol operations. The Board has advised that certain groups be permitted to meet in the Community Center subject to their compliance with the mandatory distancing and sanitation guidelines. The Chairs of all the Chartered Clubs and Special Interest Groups have been contacted to explore their interest in resuming meeting in the Community Center. Many of them have expressed interest in meeting as soon as health guidelines permit. The Chartered Club page in The Breeze and posted online lists your point of contact for all Chartered Clubs and Special Interest Groups. Due to the need for social-distancing guidelines from health officials and in the best interest of the health, safety and welfare of residents, the Board of Directors agreed to restrict the following activities in the Community Center at this time. • • •

All Card Games, Tile Games and Clubs/Special Interest Groups that require participants to be in close proximity and share materials. All Entertainment Clubs and Group Activities that require participants to be in close proximity and share materials. No Lunch 'n' Learn or Snack 'n' Learn seminars will be scheduled at this time. In lieu of the seminars, we now oﬀer “Watch 'n' Learn” Zoom Webinars/Teleconferences. Please check The Breeze and eBlast for upcoming Webinars.

OUTDOOR COURTS – The Outdoor Courts are open including, pickleball, tennis, basketball, bocce courts and horseshoe pits consistent with social-distancing guidelines and sanitation measures and only during speciﬁed hours of operation. PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING DURING ACTIVITIES: • Stay at least six (6) feet apart from other residents. Do not make physical contact with them by shaking hands, exchanging high ﬁves, etc.

Avoid touching your face after handling a ball, racquet/paddle, or other equipment. Wash your hands promptly if you have touched your eyes, nose, or mouth. Avoid sharing food, drinks, or towels. Although there is no speciﬁc evidence that tennis balls, pickleballs or basketballs can spread COVID-19, avoid using your hands to pick up tennis balls or pickleballs if possible. Basketball players should each have their own balls.

PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER OR VISIT THE OUTDOOR COURTS IF YOU… Exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19: mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough and difficulty breathing, or other symptoms identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Have been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last fourteen (14) days; or Are a vulnerable and at-risk individual (i.e., elderly and/or have underlying health conditions, including high blood pressure, chronic lung disease, diabetes, obesity, asthma, and those whose immune system may be compromised such as by chemotherapy for cancer and other conditions requiring such therapy). Do not have a reservation for a specific activity at a specific time. PROTECT AGAINST POSSIBLE INFECTIONS BY… Washing your hands with disinfectant soap and water (for 20 seconds or longer) or use a hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available, before going to the Community Center or the Association's common area facilities. Cleaning and wiping down your equipment, including racquets/paddles and water bottles. Do not share racquets/paddles or any other equipment such as wristbands, grips, hats, and towels. Bringing your own water bottle or other method of hydration and avoid using any communal water source. Using new/disinfected balls and new racket/paddle grips when possible. Considering taking extra precautions such as wearing gloves. Sneezing/coughing into a tissue or upper sleeve when necessary. Arriving as close as possible to the time you need to be in the Community Center.

We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation daily and keep you informed of any changes. These restrictions will remain in place until the State Health Authority Directives advise it is safe and the Board believes it is in the best interest of the community to remove them. Many people are still waiting to receive their first COVID-19 inoculation, and although death rates have come down from the highs we saw, the threat still very much exists. My best guess (and it is only a guess) is that sometime this fall will give us a much better idea when the threat will drop to an acceptable level. In other words, I think we can expect at least another six months or more of masks and social distancing. At this point, we are working on our next fiscal budget for 2021-2022, and the amount of guesswork is large and based on much supposition due to the pandemic. The budget will be presented to you on May 5 (more to follow later on this) and I encourage you to attend the virtual meeting; you will see what factors went into the final numbers. Happy Easter and together we will get through this pandemic and once again be a happy family.

BOARD MESSAGE HOW THE ARC COMMITTEE PROTECTS YOUR INTERESTS

Each member of the Board of Directors of Sun City Aliante takes on the responsibility of becoming the Board's liaison to one of the Board's primary committees. I am the Board Liaison for the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). This Committee is the group that looks after maintaining the attractiveness of our community by reviewing all homeowner plans for modiﬁcations, additions, and general changes to the exterior of their homes and property. The Architectural Guidelines is the “bible” for this committee.

To assure that the Guidelines are current, the Committee periodically reviews all the many categories to ensure that they meet current Nevada Statutes, current federal rules, and the latest acceptable architectural styles that ﬁt Sun City Aliante's residences. The ARC Committee is the only Association Committee that meets four times a month. This allows homeowners to apply for changes more often and allows them to speak with ARC members to get recommendations to assist them in their modiﬁcations. As the liaison, it is my job to listen to the Committee's requests and take any issues to the Board. While I sit on the Committee, I do not evaluate homeowner requests or vote on approvals. I leave that to our expert Committee members.

in how you comply, and they do allow variances on rare occasions. If your request is non-compliant with the Guidelines, they will make suggestions that will make it so. They have the final say as to whether or not your plan is in compliance. There is no appealing the decision of the ARC Committee. If they deny an application, that is the end of your plan unless it can be modified to meet the Committee's standards. If you make modifications without submitting an Application, you can be fined and be forced to remove all the changes that were made even if not found until well after you made the change. Sometimes, if your changes did not violate the Guidelines, you will be required to submit an after-the-fact application. The ARC has just elected a new member to the Committee. Mark Towers brings a lot of experience. He previously served on the Master Association ARC. He was a Board member here in Sun City. Most of you know him and his wife, Lynda, since they have both been active in our community for many years.

Sun City Aliante Board Meeting Summary So why do you have to know about the ARC? The basic reason is that you cannot make any changes to your property without filing an ARC application and having the Committee approve it. If you do not have approval, then you risk having to remove your work or face a fine. When filing an application, you may be required to have the written approval of your neighbors. For example, if you want to fence in your property or build a wall around it, the immediately adjacent neighbors must also approve your project and sign the application. Many years ago, an owner put in some decorations which a neighbor disapproved of. That neighbor went out and got a couple of pink plastic flamingos for his lawn. He made his point, and everything was resolved satisfactorily. Whenever you want to make a change that impacts the view or structural stability of your property or impacts neighbors you can refer to the Guidelines. If you are still not sure, come to one of the Thursday meetings. The Committee is there to assist you in getting what you want and doing it within the Guidelines. Notice that I did not say “the rules.” That is because the Committee has some leeway

Please read below for a summary of the March 10, 2021 Board of Directors (BOD) monthly meeting: Unﬁnished Business: Reopening of the Community Center – We are continuing to follow the state mandates for social distancing and limited use of amenities. As of March 15, the ﬁtness class occupancy increased from 6 to 8. New Business • Board approved insurance renewal from USI Insurance (current carrier) with the removal of Excess Umbrella coverage for $25 million but replacing it with a $10 million coverage for a total of $55,601. • Board approved the Lifestyle Committee recommendation to appoint Julie Tomlin to the committee. • Board approved the ARC Committee recommendation to appoint Mark Towers to the committee. • Board approved to accept Complex Solutions' proposal for a Reserve Study with a two-week turnaround for $6,500. • Board approved to accept Pueblo Electrical Services' proposal to install seven new lighting bollards at Willow Wren Park for $8,700.

COMMUNITY MGR UPDATE ON PROJECTS AND HOA ACTIVITIES Dear Residents, I would like to give you an update on the latest projects that have been approved or are being considered by our Board of Directors to enhance, maintain, or improve the value of our community. Even if you seldom visit the Community Center or participate in the many events and activities normally offered to all residents, you will benefit from the many projects and events listed below. 2021 Board of Directors Election – I hope you had an opportunity to attend the Candidate's Forum held on March 20 in the Vista Room. We offered in-person attendance at the event, and homeowners were Damianlimited Carrasco encouraged to attend via Teleconference as well as submit questions in advance for consideration. This was a great opportunity to meet all the candidates. We will mail ballots to homeowners in early April. The deadline for ballot submission is Wednesday, May 12 at 8 a.m. Details of the Annual Meeting and other election information is on page 10 of The Breeze. Budget Workshop – The Board of Directors and Finance Committee will hold a workshop on Wednesday, May 5, to discuss the proposed 2021-2022 Budget for the Association. It will be offered via teleconference and a limited number of homeowners will be allowed to attend in person. We will announce details in upcoming eBlasts. The Budget will be mailed to homeowners in late May. Reserve Study – We are working on a revised study to update the assets as a result of the Expansion and Enclosure Project – including furniture, artwork, and billiard tables – and the replacement of assets. Outside Common Areas – We continue to work to enhance the Sun City Aliante Community in the common areas with the following projects: • • • •

Installing lighting at Willow Wren Park. Considering adding more lighting at Widewing Park. Repairing the cracks in the asphalt in the parking lot and resealing the circular driveway in front of the main entrance to the Community Center. Also, we will restripe the parking lot. Refurbishing the Sun City Aliante sign adjacent to the fountain and waterwall at the intersection of Aliante Parkway and Elkhorn. Also, we will change the existing lighting to LED.

Telephone System – We are now in the process of getting bids from several companies to replace our current telephone system and hardware. We are looking forward to having a brand new, modern phone system with the latest technology. New Display Cases – We are excited about installing six four-foot long display cases in the Grand View Room with lighting. This will provide space for all Sun City Aliante Clubs and Special Interest Groups to showcase their projects.

COVID-19 Vaccinations – We will continue to reach out to the North Las Vegas Fire Department to explore scheduling future dates for residents under 70 to receive the COVID-19 vaccinations in the Community Center. In the meantime, I would like to inform you about the many additional locations which are administering the vaccines. To the American Red Cross Blood donors at the Community Center – Blood Drive on March 18, thank you for your lifesaving gift to others. We had a goal of 18 units and collected 25 total units, with 21 whole blood and 2 Power Red machine donations that count as 2 each. Each unit of blood potentially can save up to 3 lives, so that equals up to 75 lives impacted because of your eﬀorts on March 18.

I remind myself often not to judge a story or a statement shared with me unless I am incredibly well-informed and knowledgeable about the particulars. The last thing I want to do is be embarrassed or feel ashamed for making assumptions. Therefore, I do my best to get all the facts and not jump into conclusions.

To the Sun City Aliante Residents and Staﬀ, thank you for allowing me to be in your lives and navigating through this historical time. It is the words of encouragement, smiles, positive attitudes, and optimistic spirts that are keeping everyone going forward, so never lose that sense of humor!

Everybody has a story, and every community is diﬀerent and unique. The best way to avoid misunderstanding, hurt feelings, drama, and worse – legal actions is to stay calm, ask questions, do some research, and in my opinion, give a little grace. THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE US COVID-19 VACCINATION PROGRAM Now that there are authorized and recommended vaccines to prevent COVID-19 in the United States, here are eight things you need to know about the new COVID-19 Vaccination Program and COVID-19 vaccines:

And while we open up eligibility, we will also use every resource we have, including any federal government support to reach every community and remove barriers to access for our most vulnerable and at highest risk of severe illness due to COVID-19.” 4. The goal is for everyone to be able to easily get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as large enough quantities are

This is our way of recognizing newcomers and encouraging them to visit Carol Garbarino in Customer Service Oﬃce. Carol helps residents register and obtain a membership card to access all of the fabulous events, activities and programs that make our community such a great place to live.

Wow, can you believe that it has been more than a year since the pandemic hit our nation causing shutdowns around the world? I am incredibly grateful to be here with all of you to see the light at the end of this very long tunnel. As a friendly reminder, those who are 65 and older or who qualify based on the current tier groups, such as with preexisting health conditions, may schedule for a COVID-19 vaccination appointment or sign up for the waitlist by visiting vax4nv.nv.gov.

Thank you for your overwhelming response to the St. Patrick's Day DriveThru Lunch, hosted by Commissioner Kirkpatrick, on March 10. We were booked to capacity almost immediately, and we had a long waiting list. Our regrets if you missed the lunch. However, the Commissioner promises to return soon with another fun event; so, stay tuned.

All of us here in North Las Vegas want to ensure we do everything in our power to protect the health of our residents and promote their quality of life. This would not be possible without our amazing North Las Vegas Fire Department team and our National Guard volunteers who have visited Sun City Aliante's newly renovated Community Center over the past several weeks. Through these amazing eﬀorts, my wife and I have had the privilege of meeting some of the nicest people here in our community. I heard many comments about how painless and fast this process was.

We will also offer “The Medicare Store on Wheels” on April 22 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the parking lot. Andrea and Brandon Scott will be on hand to answer all your Medicare questions. Our “Historical Spotlight” is an account of the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic. After striking an iceberg on her maiden voyage in the early morning of April 14, 1912, more than 1,500 passengers were lost at sea in the North Atlantic. The article points out the importantance of wireless messages and how the crisis may have been averted. The story is presented in a two-part series, which will continue in the May issue. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our eBlast system, which is housed on our website – www.suncityaliante.org, has served as an indispensable tool to alert our residents about the distribution of vaccines at our Community Center and other locations throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Once again, I would like to thank our Board of Directors for making this partnership possible and to Debra Kent and the First Service staff for their kindness in supplying all of our firefighters and volunteers with sandwiches and goodies each day they were there. I also want to thank our wonderful residents for making it all pleasant and efficient. Now, when I was asked to write something for the Breeze, I wanted to make sure that it would not just be about the city and all of the amazing and great things we're doing daily. We have weekly newsletters that you can subscribe to and quarterly articles in the Aliante Aerial for this. Instead, I wanted to focus on you, our Sun City residents, and everything that relates to you and your neighborhood. Lastly, as a tease to my next article, there is a reason people call me the “pets and vets” councilman. These are my two greatest passions. Recently, with the support of my fellow council members, we made major changes to our animal ordinance; our Animal Control Officers have now been named more appropriately; "Animal Protection Officers.” We are in the process of changing the names on the vehicles as well. I will also be able to go into detail about our Community Diversionary Court, which will include a much overdue Veterans Court here in our city. I am also happy to say that we have appointed former Justice Court Judge Chris Lee to be our Community Diversionary Court Judge. Lee brings years of experience, and most importantly, passion to this new position. Vaccines will work with your immune system so it will be ready to ﬁght the virus if you are exposed.

We will not know how long immunity produced by vaccination lasts until we have more data on how well it works.

FACT: Getting vaccinated can help prevent getting sick with COVID-19

The combination of getting vaccinated and following CDC's recommendations to protect yourself and others will oﬀer the best protection from COVID-19. Stopping a pandemic requires using all the tools we have available. As experts learn more about how COVID-19 vaccination may help reduce spread of the disease in communities, CDC will continue to update the recommendations to protect communities using the latest science.

FACT: COVID-19 vaccines will not give you COVID-19. None of the COVID-19 vaccines currently developed in the United States use the live virus that causes COVID-19. In addition to Pﬁzer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen, there are other types of vaccines in development. Each of them will teach our immune systems how to recognize and ﬁght the virus that causes COVID-19. Sometimes this process can cause symptoms, such as fever. These symptoms are normal and are a sign that the body is building immunity. It typically takes a few weeks for the body to build immunity after vaccination. This means a person could be infected with the virus just before or after vaccination and get sick because the vaccine has not had enough time to provide protection.

FACT: COVID-19 vaccines will not cause you to test positive on COVID-19 tests

While many people with COVID-19 have only a mild illness, others may get a severe illness or they may even die. There is no way to know how COVID19 will aﬀect you, even if you are not at increased risk of severe complications. If you get sick, you also may spread the disease to friends, family, and others around you while you are sick. COVID-19 vaccination helps protect you by creating an antibody response without having to experience sickness.

FACT: You should wear a mask before and after you receive a COVID-19 vaccine CDC recommends that during the pandemic people wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth when in contact with others outside your household, when in healthcare facilities, and when receiving any vaccine, including a COVID-19 vaccine. It typically takes a few weeks for the body to build up immunity after an immunization. CDC does not currently recommend use of a face shield or gaiter as a substitute for a mask. Anyone who has trouble breathing should consult their physician about wearing a mask. How do I know which sources of COVID-19 vaccine information are accurate? We strive for a more secure community, and we are dedicated to the goal of a higher standard of living within Sun City. Someday, we hope to restart our Patrol function, and we look forward to getting Patrol volunteers when that day arrives. We will discuss volunteering in upcoming Breeze articles. Stop your paper and ask your Block Captain and neighbors to look for ﬂyers or cards left on your door. Put your coach lights on a timer; so that, the front of your house is illuminated.

HAPPY 75 YEARS YOUNG, RODGER! On Sunday, February 21, we celebrated Rodger Wedgeworth's 75th birthday. We got together with 70 of our closest friends, LOL, and had a "Surprise Drive by Parade." It was truly a community event. We had a fabulous time. For about an hour, approximately 40 cars just kept driving by our house to wish Rodger a happy birthday. He was so surprised. We gave each participant an individually packaged cupcake. He was showered with cards, balloons, honking horns, and a whole lot of love. It was a time to remember. ~Submitted by Janice Wedgeworth

FATHER-SON MARATHON Sun City Aliante resident Kevin Smith and our son, Erik Smith, ﬁnished a father/son ½ Marathon walking on January 31, 2021. That's 13.1 miles! Kevin just turned 67 and our son, Erik, is 29. Our dog, Katie, acted as comfort dog and cheering squad. Judy Smith acted as e m e rg e n c y m e d i c a l team, water provider and chief photographer. Alexa played Olympicthemed, championship music as they crossed the ﬁnish line and when they arrived back home. Erik came in about 20 minutes before his dad, which shows Kevin is in pretty good shape. Judy presented the medals and took the photos. After the ceremony, the guys stretched their tired muscles then relaxed in recliners while eating, drinking, watching an inspiring movie about running marathons! APRIL IS STRESS AWARENESS MONTH STRESS AND COVID: THE DOUBLE WHAMMY Stress occurs when your mind and body react to changes, and it often results in emotional and physical responses that can have lasting effects. Stress has multiple causes - including changes in your work and home environments - exactly the kind of scenario that COVID-19 has brought about for most people. Not all aspects of stress are negative: it is a built-in survival response designed to keep you alert and able to avoid danger. But unless you have a lot of grizzlies wandering about in your neighborhood, stress is generally not a good thing. Moreover, if you don't take steps to manage stress, over time it can accumulate and push your mind and body over the breaking point. Physical manifestations of untreated stress include: • Chest pain and a racing heart rate • Elevated blood pressure • TMJ • Weakened immune system • Gastrointestinal issues • Sexual dysfunction • Trouble sleeping • Aches and pains, including headaches LONG-TERM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES Stress has emotional and mental effects as well, including anxiety and depression, and behavioral issues including addictive behavior such as drug and alcohol abuse, gambling, overeating, and smoking. Being cooped up in quarantine exacerbates these issues for many people, and it's not just good old fashioned "cabin fever." When stressors are in your environment for the long term, your body doesn't turn off the switches that mitigate it as readily, which can lead to anxiety disorders such as OCD, PTSD, GAD, panic attacks, and SAD. COPING WITH STRESS Every time you turn on the news, there's more stories about businesses closing and people losing jobs - it's the economic aspect of the pandemic, and it's almost as dangerous as the virus itself. Here is a simple exercise you can do to relieve stress right anywhere you are: • Sit up straight with your feet on the floor • Close your eyes and take 10 deep breaths - in for two seconds through your nose, out for four seconds through your mouth as if you're blowing out a candle MANAGE STRESS BEFORE IT MANAGES YOU When you feel your stress meter going into the red, use these techniques to keep it from boiling over: • Get some fresh air and exercise - especially if your job entails sitting in front of a computer. This month, we are remembering the tragic sinking of RMS Titantic, a luxury British steamship deemed as "practically unsinkable." After striking an iceberg on her maiden voyage in the early morning of April 15, 1912, more than 1,500 passengers and crew were lost at sea in the North Atlantic. TITANIC TRAGEDY SPAWNS WIRELESS ADVANCEMENTS The tragedy of the RMS Titanic - loss of life numbering 1,500 passengers the night of April 14, 1912 - was a great tragedy that seems even greater when one considers that all 2,205 Titanic passengers might have been rescued if just a couple of things had happened differently. Nothing is gained, however, by living in the world of "if only." Tragedy often breeds progress, and in the case of the Titanic, this proved to be true. Little has been said of the circumstances of the Californian,a passenger ship that was within sight when the Titanic struck the iceberg that caused it to sink. The Californian failed to acknowledge the distress flares of the Titanic or to turn on its wireless. The passenger ship Carpathia, 58 miles southeast of the stricken Titanic, responded to the distress call and rescued 705 passengers in lifeboats. The other 1,500 passengers had succumbed to the cold sea. The sinking of the "unsinkable" Titanic shocked the world. The pride of the White Star Line, the Titanic was the sister of the RMS Olympic, which had already enjoyed great success and acceptance by the travel industry. The Olympic had also set a speed record for the round trip from England to New York. The Titanic's sinking generated an opportunity for many to profit on the meager details available. Most details were available through the late David Sarnoff, the Marconi wireless operator, atop the Wannamaker Building in New York City. Sarnoff handled traffic without relief for several days with the ship Carpathia and the shore station at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Sarnoff's tenacity and loyalty during the period of uncertainty catapulted him to fame, and later he became president of Radio Corporation of America. News released to the media by the Marconi Wireless Company was often distorted, and the sensationalism often overshadowed the enormity of the tragedy. family members of those lost at sea. One book in particular, The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters, published within weeks of the disaster, was pedaled door-to-door with a profitable success. Even the cinema, in its infancy, capitalized by producing animated films of the Titanic, including such scenes as passengers' struggles and fights to find space on the limited number of lifeboats. By the moral standards of 1912, the animation exceeded human tolerance. Since the Titanic's sinking, stories, books, documentaries and films have emerged with variations of the facts. The fascination about the Titanic continues to attract the human soul. The latest resurrection is the movie, Titanic, was released on Dec. 19, 1997. This movie, by 20th Century-Fox, was a $200 million extravaganza representing most accurately the events taking place prior to, during and following the Titanic disaster. No money was spared in the research and presentation of historical facts, or the re-creation of scenery depicting the ship including the grand salon and, of course, the replica of the wireless room that played a most important role in the rescue of the 705 passengers. The movie goes into extraordinary detail to include replicas of the motion picture cameras of the 1912 period, to depict the filming of passengers gathered at the pier to embrace one another for the last time and extend a wish for a "bon voyage" before embarking on the Titanic. The reproduction accuracy of the wireless room and its equipment will be testified to when the original wireless room is lifted by Titanic Inc. and delivered to the Marconi Museum in Bedford, NH, for evaluation and display. Titanic Inc. and its president, George Tulloch, are the salvage contractors given sole rights to the recovery of any and all of the Titanic lying 12,000 feet at the bottom of the sea. Artifacts already recovered and restored by Titanic Inc. are currently on display in Memphis, TN. The exposition moves on to Atlanta for opening Nov. 19, 1997. To be continued in the May 2021 issue

For Seniors, Good Health is a Team Effort The important connections between physical, mental and social wellness What does it mean to be healthy? Depending on whom you ask, you may get different answers, but being free from illness and disease will likely be a top response. Health has many dimensions though, and for seniors especially, it is helpful to look at it as a web of interconnected factors that all influence one another. The World Health Organization now defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." All three dimensions of health physical, mental and social - are interdependent. This idea has been around for thousands of years, but science now confirms it. Mental and social health challenges can exacerbate or lead to physical illness; likewise, chronic physical illness can lead to mental health issues and social isolation. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), precisely measuring the impact of social isolation is difficult, "but there is strong evidence that many adults aged 50 and older are socially isolated or lonely in ways that put their health at risk." The challenges of 2020 only made this worse, as millions of seniors found themselves more isolated than ever, with the constant threat of COVID-19 adding a new layer of stress to the equation. Several studies have shown links between increased levels of social support and reduced risk for physical disease, mental illness and mortality. Social support includes connections that make a person feel cared for, valued and part of a group. This can be critical for seniors who rely on family, friends or community organizations to assist them with daily activities, provide companionship and care for their well-being. Now more than ever, professionals are recognizing the importance of caring for all aspects of senior wellness, because problems in one area of life can quickly ripple across others. This includes monitoring a person's physical, social and mental wellness, food and housing security, financial stability, family relationships and other health determinants. Forward-thinking providers are also working with seniors to connect them with community organizations that address those needs and then track health outcomes. What they're finding, according to the National Academy of Medicine, is that "health equity, racial disparities and social determinants…account for 80 percent of a person's overall health." There is a lot of great entertainment online these days. But if you are a senior and you love Broadway, it is not quite back (and if it sort of is) it's certainly not free.

CERAMICS CLUB Spring is here and you may want to take a look at some of the ceramic items you can create. Whether you have never tried ceramics before or you are a seasoned crafter, you can consider picking a project from the many options that are available. The club also offers finished items for purchase if you are interested. Club times are 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All are required to wear face masks. All seating is 6 feet apart. Tables will be marked for seating. Other safety protocols will be explained when you come to class. We hope to see some new faces join us as well as more of our current members. New members are always welcome, and we have certified teachers ready to help you if needed. The Forget-Me-Knot Club will provide yarn, needles, hooks, patterns, and instruction as well as a w o n d e r f u l opportunity to socialize with others. SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS Seniors with Warm Hearts continues to look to the future and move forward with our volunteer eﬀorts. Some of the organizations are Serving Our Kids Foundation, Baby's Bounty, Project 150, Street Teens, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, SAFE House, to name a few. At our meeting this month, we will discuss upcoming projects and events, as opportunities begin to show themselves to us in a safe manner. Everyone needs to know about this wonderful organization called Sing for Your Seniors (SFYS), founded by caring, talented Broadway singer/actress Jackie Vanderbeck, who worked with our son, Erik Smith, at Sacramento Theatre Company in Sacramento, Calif. Jackie had a heart for seniors and the disabled. She formed SFYS many years ago; so, Broadway singers could give back to the community by entertaining in person for free. Of course, when COVID hit, SYFS could no longer perform live, especially, in senior communities. Jackie is one smart. resourceful lady, and she quickly reinvented SFYS by changing the whole program; so, SYFS members could perform live on Zoom. SFYS gave a Zoom concert of Broadway hits for the Sun City Aliante Songsters in February, and it was wonderful! We laughed and joked with them, cheered them and told them how sad we were to not be able to sing. Several of the Broadway singers performed at The Smith Center in 2019. They told us they particularly loved performing for Songsters, as we had singing in common and were one of the most appreciative audiences they have had! This performance for the Songsters was their ﬁrst in Nevada. Yes, Jackie started SFYS in New York, but she is now expanding this wonderful group to many states. Music speaks to our souls. I have been in several SYFS Zoom concerts and have seen how the most distant and ailing senior immediately responds to music. One particular audience member had a small bear sitting next to her. When the music started, I noticed that she seemed to perk up at bit. Later in the show, she picked up the bear and held it close. I am convinced that music is the language of heaven and a gift from God, and we should all make sure we have a lot of great music in our lives. I would love for you all to be able to see and hear SFYS perform on Zoom. VETERAN'S AUXILIARY TECHNOLOGY CLUB TALKS ELECTRIC VEHICLES (EVs) Nearly 20 members of the Technology Club gathered on Thursday, March 4 to discuss electrical vehicles (EVs) and the state of these vehicles in the United States. EVs used to be looked at as a fantasy but now have emerged as realistic alternatives to the current

internal combustion engines. Club Presenter Qung Go led a discussion about the current state of EVs and considerations for choosing EVs over the current fossil fuel cars. This discussion was augmented by a panel discussion with Diane Laudadio and Eric Berri, both residents and owners of Tesla EVs. A lively discussion ensued, speaking to the pros and cons of current EVs, and even dipping briefly into a discussion of promising "fuel cell" technology, a technology which is in direct competition with battery powered Evs. Following the meeting, Diane and Eric topped off the evening with demonstrations of their Tesla automobiles in the parking lot. The conclusion of club members was that EVs are real and should be considered in the plans of all Americans. Happy Springtime from the Veterans Auxiliary! Wish everyone a very Happy Easter. The Veterans Auxiliary has been working on blankets for the veterans at the VA Hospital in November or December. The Auxiliary is still collecting coupons for our Veterans and their families proudly serving overseas. If you are interested in saving coupons, please cut and separate them (food, non-food, and pet). The coupons could be good even if they are expired up to six months. VETERANS CLUB OF SUN CITY ALIANTE Thank you to the past elected Board members (David Hollander, Toni Stuart, and Sheila Cohen), of the delegated board, members of the Veterans Club of Sun City Aliante and Auxiliary, as well as members of the Sun City Aliante community, including the support staﬀ of our Community Center for your support in this past challenging year. I am grateful for your care and support, personally and as chair of the club, which insured that our club continued to function actively and smoothly. I have enjoyed the opportunity and experience to lead this wonderful club for the past two years, and it is time for me to move on; so, others will have the opportunity. At our March meeting, the attending members voted for the new elected board for April 2021 – March 2022. The nominations were: David Hollander for Chair, Marc Hollander for Vice Chair, Sheila Cohen for Secretary, and Tina Johnson for Treasurer. Congratulations and thank you for volunteering to lead our club for the upcoming year. Please join me in supporting them, as they continue the club's eﬀort for the Veteran Memorial Garden and Veterans Recognition Wall, and the support of veterans and our community. Hopefully, this coming year will see a return of our club's annual events: picnic, spaghetti dinner, pancake breakfast, and Appreciation Day at Craig Ranch Park. At our February meeting, Sydney Knott of Horses for Heroes invited the Veterans Club of Sun City Aliante for a “Day at Horses 4 Heroes”. Thank you, Richard Lawhead and Ken Knudsen, for volunteering to make arrangements for this event. It is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2021 from 1-5 pm. Club members and their families (including grandchildren) are invited to come for a BYO picnic and enjoy the grounds of this unique facility.
